Letter From The Publisher Greetings, February is always a special month for me. Not because it is Valentine’s Day. It is the month my first child was born and I became a mom. 8 years ago, my daughter was born on Groundhog’s Day. I had no idea at the time where the journey of being a mother would take me. It definitely has been a bumpy road but I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Seeing my children grow up and form little personalities has been the ultimate gift. To celebrate her 8th birthday, we usually throw a party (I alternate one year a party, one year a special trip chosen by the birthday child). This year I will be needing our Party Planning Issue to help throw a fun party for her and her many friends! Check out page 16 for help with planning your child’s special day! Save the date! PB Parenting is bringing our Summer Camp Expo back! Join us Sunday, April 23rd from 11 AM - 2 PM at the Garden Club at the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium. We will have a FREE day of Family Fun with over 40 local summer camps and discounted admission to the museum. For more details go to https://www.facebook.com/ events/1661231514169644/

7 Valentine Traditions to Start with Your Kids BY SARAH LYONS

Valentine’s Day is traditionally a time for couples to express their love for one another, but it is also a great chance to show your children how much you love them too. While children typically exchange cards and small gifts on Valentine’s Day, this year try starting some fun new traditions for your family. Dessert first Just once a year it can’t hurt to have your sweets before your meal. Offer cake or ice cream first and let the kids enjoy their dessert without having to eat their veggies first. Make it heart-shaped After your dessert first dinner, serve up some fun Valentine’s Day themed meals. Heart-shaped pancakes or heart-shaped pizza are both fun and easy. Get the kids involved in the kitchen and you will have more time to make special memories of your Valentine’s Day dinner. Go on a “date” Many people go on a date with their significant other to celebrate Valentine’s Day

8 February 2017 | PB Parenting |

but consider taking your child on a “date” to a place of their choice. If you have more than one child, each parent can pair off or take turns so all kids get to participate. Spending quality time together is a great way to show your kids you care and get the conversation flowing. Cuddle up If going out isn’t for your family, set aside time to cuddle up on the couch with those you love. Make popcorn, put on some comfortable pajamas, rent some movies, and spend some time together relaxing and cuddling in the comfort of your living room. To make it extra special for Valentine’s Day, add red sprinkles to the popcorn and choose movies that have a love theme. Bake and share Bake some Valentine’s Day themed cookies to share with someone you love. While you are at it, double the batch and share them with someone who may be spending Valentine’s Day alone this year. Cookies are a great way to show others you care and bring some cheer.

Hide the hearts Hide paper hearts around the house and have the kids go on a search for them. Whoever finds the most wins a prize such as a small toy or a book. You might want to have prizes on hand so that everyone gets a turn being the winner. You can enlist the winners to be their siblings assistant as a way of demonstrating their love for each other too.

Declare your love The simplest way to show others you care is to tell them. Have each family member state one reason why they love the others. You can also write these on scraps of paper and read them as a group. Tuck them away in a special envelope and pull them out year after year to reread them. Check out these easy party planning tips to help make planning your child’s birthday party easy and stress free as 1, 2, 3! Also check out PB Parenting’s Birthday party checklist on page 15 - cut it out and start crossing off your to-do list! 1. Start with the invite list. It dictates everything: How large a venue you need, what kind of theme or activities you pick, etc. 2. What about siblings? Before age 7, inviting siblings is a nice gesture if you have the space and funds. However, other parents understand your predicament firsthand. If it’s not feasible, don’t be afraid to say no. If childcare is an issue for the sibling perhaps offer to have them drop the birthday guest off. 3. If your child’s friend list is a mile long consider making it Just Family Don’t be afraid to make your child’s party just a family affair or just family plus a few friends. 4. Skip the paper invite. Everyone is online these days (even grandmas

10 February 2017 | PB Parenting |

have email and maybe even facebook!) Utilize any of the many free services out there or create a private facebook event! 5. Get creative. Regardless of your theme, there are lots of places to go for inspiration including Pinterest. By the time your child is 3 or so, they’ll have lots of input on what they want too maybe too much input! 6. Skip the Goodie Bags! There! We said it! We love the generous spirit behind goodie bags and party favors, but we could all do without random tchotchkes that get played with for five seconds (if that) and then stuffed in a drawer. How about hosting a simple craft activity and letting the result serve as the parting gift? Or taking a group photo and printing out copies (at the party or after) for each child to keep? 7. Food- Offer a variety of foods. Ordering a few pizzas takes care of the main course, but think about including fruit, nuts, cheese, crackers, or popcorn for snacking.

8. Visit the venue- Plan a visit to your venue if you are throwing it outside your home before the party so you can scope it out and anticipate any issues.

COME VISIT OUR NEWLY RENOVATED Y'S!

9. Instead of lugging a trunk full of gifts home suggest NO GIFTS - If you are overflowing with toys and you want to try something new, host a book exchange. On the invite, ask that everyone bring a book in lieu of a gift, which they will then exchange for a new one. 10. Keep it short! You need one or two activities that will take you to cake time! Party experts recommend 90 minutes for children under 5. Two hours for ages over 5.

EXERCISE YOUR HEART IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE. Experience Our Upgraded Facilities and Programs. YMCASPBC.org

11. Set an End Time. Always err on the side of a shorter party, and note a

specific end time on the invitation. As kids get older, most parents will expect to drop off their kids and pick them up at the end of the party. If you’d like some grown up assistants, be sure to arrange for them ahead of time. 12. Take a lot of Photos. When the party is done all you have left is pictures. Make sure to designate someone to. 13. Write thank-you notes. While sending email invitations is standard these days, most guests still appreciate a good oldfashioned physical thank-you card—particularly one written by the birthday child. It can even be a picture if your child can’t write yet “It can be a scribble, a picture or as. Can’t stand the thought of more wasted paper inevitably ending up in the trash? Send a personalized thank-you email and include pictures of the party. 14. Consider Throwing Parties Every Few Years - Everyone should feel special on her birthday, but there’s no rule that says your kid has to have an elaborate party every year. 15. Team Up with a Friend. Does your child have a good buddy with a birthday in close proximity? Team up to reduce effort (and scheduling) for all! Planning a birthday party doesn’t have to make you want to pull your hair out! It also helps to connect with the right vendors to make sure your party goes off without a hitch! PB TRAVELS

A Getaway for Two February is a perfect month for a getaway for two! Leave the kids with grandma and take a drive up the coast to St. Augustine. With over 450 years of history right outside your door you are in the ideal location for discovering the city’s wonderful restaurants, shops, and historic attractions. This is a “Parkit and Forget-it” destination. There are many bed and breakfast inns to choose from. Our favorite place to stay in is the Inn on Charlotte. If it is full, you can stay next door at their modern sister inn, The Hemingway House Bed & Breakfast.

The Hemingway House and Inn on Charlotte

24 February 2017 | PB Parenting |

Built in 1918, the Inn on Charlotte Street is an elegant bed and breakfast in the heart of the nation’s oldest city and just steps from the bayfront on a quiet brick-lined street. The home has been restored to reflect its original grandeur and is carefully decorated with antique furnishings. Both inns are adult-only inns so you can enjoy a truly kidfree getaway. Owners, Rodney and Jerry, exude Southern hospitality and make you feel welcome from the moment you check in with fresh baked cookies and refreshments in the parlour. Enjoy social hour on the porch daily. Jerry will ask you “Red, White or Yeungling?” Breakfast is served downstairs every morning, it is always delicious and made with love! Rodney will even cater to dietary allergies. Choose a room with a jacuzzi tub and a balcony and you may never want to leave! Don’t get too comfortable! There is so much city to explore so bring your walking shoes! Strolling through old town taking in the Spanish architecture is a great way to spend

the day exploring the many art galleries, shops, restaurants and attractions. If walking isn’t your thing you can hitch a ride on the Old Town Trolley Tour and hop on and off at many destinations. Make sure to check out the Castillo de San Marcos. It is unique in North American architecture as its the only 17th century military construction in the country and the oldest masonry fortress in the United States. The National Park Service maintains and runs the fort and each room is rich in history in early Spanish Florida living. Don’t miss the live cannon demonstration.

What is a adult getaway without an adult beverage? You can tour the San Sebastian Winery and the St. Augustine Distillery (located in the old ice plant). Both are located within blocks of each other and tours include complimentary tasting! After all that exploring you are going to be hungry! No need to get in the car. Just walk a few blocks and enjoy a quiet romantic dinner for two at Collage Restaurant. Located in a small house, with around 15 tables. We highly recommend reservations! Their menu is fresh and local with an amazing wine list to match.
