For the first time a new study by La Roche-Posay, now shows that a broad spectrum daily moisturizing cream, such as La Roche-Posay’s Anthelios SX Daily Moisturizer, can offer powerful protection in the prevention of UVA radiation-induced photoaging. This soon to be published clinical study demonstrates that the protection offered by Anthelios SX Daily Moisturizer significantly minimizes the expression of an enzyme that degrades collagen – a process that results in wrinkles. Anthelios SX is a light, oil-free, non comedogenic and non-acnegenic moisturizer that provides 24-hour hydration that isn’t greasy and absorbs quickly. It has turned into a cult favorite for consumers. Cool as Ice

Local Ice Skater Wins on the Ice with Endless Dedication to her Sport BY FELONICE MERRIMAN

Most people, let alone a teenager, don’t want to be up at 4 AM in the morning. But 3x a week, Caterina Alf is putting on her skates and heading to the rink at 4:30 AM to skate an hour and half before heading to school. After class she will spend another 2-3 hours on the ice. She does this 6 days a week. These hours and this dedication to her sport helped land the 17 year old teenager from Boca Raton 6th place overall in the South Atlantic Regional Competition last year competing at the Junior level. Caterina competes in one of the biggest regions in the country with skaters from Florida to Washington DC. During the competition, she achieved a personal best score (13 points over her previous record) placing 4th in long program. The road to the Regional competition was paved when she placed 1st

8 January 2015 | PB Parenting |

in the state games for short and long program last year. PB Parenting recently sat down to talk to Caterina about her skating career, how she balances school and being a teenager and what inspiration she hopes to give young skaters who would like to compete. Caterina spends around 6 days a week on the ice, and also works out off the ice plus she does hour of ballet a week. At the same time she maintains good grades in her AP/Honors classes at American Heritage in Delray Beach. Caterina’s mom, Lori Alf said “We are very grateful for them (American Heritage). They are incredibly supportive of students with demanding sports schedule.” Caterina does have a customized school schedule that allows her to pursue being on the ice. Education is very important to Caterina and even though she is dedicated to ice skating, college is her future priority. Caterina has been skating for 13 years. She has found that the discipline in training helps her with her off-ice pursuits at school. “Ice skating keeps you really on task. It is a lot of hard work, it teaches you to focus and concentrate.” Even though it is a lot of hardwork, she encourages young

children not to be intimidated, that starting the sport is a lot of fun and full of good incentives. In 2009, Lori Alf built Palm Beach Ice Works so all of her children could be together. Caterina isn’t the only one on the ice. Her 15 year old brother plays hockey with the Breakers. And next door, her 12 year old brother practices gymnastics. Building the large facility helped Lori from becoming the “taxi mom” having to drop off and take her children to three different practices. The new year starts a new competitive season for Caterina. She will keep putting long hours of practice in to pursue her ice skating passion. She is looking forward to the new season and can’t wait to compete on the regional level again. We asked her what her new years resolution is for 2015. She paused and thought about it for a moment and she said, “To try to be nicer when I am over tired.” If you see Catarina, perhaps you can give her a pass, waking up early would make anyone a little cranky! We can’t wait to see what the new year brings for this talented young woman. Palm Beach Ice Works is located at 1590 N. Mango Road, West Palm Beach. The Olympic sized facility offers training in figure skating, hockey and off ice conditioning. For more information go to www.pbiw.org.

Exercise Helps Improve Attention and Other Symptoms in Children with ADHD A recent study confirms what many parents and educators intuitively realize: physical exercise helps ADHD children function better. The study concludes that physical activity improves cognition and has a healthy effect on the brain. ADHD Research Background The study, completed by Charles H. Hillman et al., was undertaken over a nine-month period and involved 221 children aged 7 to 9 years who were randomly chosen to either participate in a physical activity (PA) program or put on a waiting list for the program (the latter was the control group for the study). The following aspects were measured as part of the study: • Changes in physical fitness • Electrical activity in the brain • Increases in executive control in the brain Executive control in the brain assists with the ability to withstand distractions and increase focus (inhibitions), the capacity to move easily from one task to another (cognitive flexibility), and the ability to remember facts recently learned and to come to conclusions regarding those facts (working memory). These are all traits that children with ADHD struggle with.

18 January 2015 | PB Parenting |

Conclusions of the ADHD Study Once the research was completed, the study concluded that exercise was a contributing factor in increasing executive control in the brains of the children who participated in the PE program. The recommendation was that PE classes form a regular part of children’s days at school, and that the result would not only be a rise of physical and aerobic fitness, but there would be a positive spin-off effect in reading and mathematics learning; both of these are dependent on efficient executive control in the brain. Similar ADHD Studies At least two other research studies exist on the positive links between ADHD and exercise. The first one studied 17 children in Grade 3 who exhibited at least four symptoms on the Disruptive Behavior Disorders Rating Scale. They participated in around 30 minutes of physical activity at school every day for eight weeks. Between 64 and 71 percent of the children showed general improvement, and there were marked changes in the inhibition field. The second study compared two groups of 7-year-old children who it was believed were at risk of developing ADHD. One group was given about 30 minutes of physical activity each school day for 12 weeks while

the other group was given desk activities in the classroom at that time. Parents of the children who participated in PA reported their children were less moody and inattentive at home. What Does This Mean for Parents of Children with ADHD? The good news is that what parents have known for a long time, that exercise for ADHD kids is beneficial, is now backed up with on-going scientific research. This gives parents leverage when requesting schools to allocate funds and time to PA programs. In the meantime, parents need to ensure that their ADHD children get opportunities for unstructured physical play as well as participation in team sports and activities

like dancing, karate, swimming, bike riding, or walking. About The Brain Balance Program® In almost every case, children who have an imbalance in their brain and who have some learning or behavioral issue, will also have a poorly coordinated motor system. They utilize “same-timing techniques,” for stimulating the weaker side of the brain and balancing the two hemispheres for realtime integration. Their unique integrated approach helps your child achieve optimum body and brain function, which supports improved learning—academically, socially, and emotionally. For more information go to www.brainbalancecenters.com or call 561-429-4420. Now open in Lake Worth.

ESTABLISH AND MAINTAIN STRUCTURE

• Take steps to help your child stay organized • Set predictable routines for waking up, going to bed and doing homework • Communicate clear and direct expectations for your child ENCOURAGE PRODUCTIVE ACTIVITIES

• Activities like sports, music or art classes will challenge your child and produce a tangible result of which he/she can be proud • Help your child to set goals •Limit TV and Video games which provide unproductive stimulations USE APPROPRIATE REINFORCEMENT

• “If you don’t do _______ you won’t get _____” • Reinforcement should be immediate, not working towards long-term prizes • Allow child to determine specific reinforcers to ensure interest. SEEK A PROGRAM THAT WILL ADDRESS YOUR CHILD’S UNDERLYING PROBLEM

• Increased gross motor activity and sensory and cognitive stimulation will help •Dietary changes also may help behavior

Why Diets Don’t Work According to the Journal of Clinical Psychology, 45 percent of Americans make New Year’s resolutions each year, and weight-related resolutions top the list. Unfortunately, only about 8 percent achieve any type of resolution, weightrelated or not. If you’ve made (and then broken) the same old weight or health-oriented resolutions each January, you’re not alone. It might be time to focus on research-proven approaches to get healthier that actually work — without gimmicks, diets that eliminate foods, or buying strange foods and equipment. Start Well: Eat Breakfast Start the day right, and it really can make things go better all day. Research has repeatedly shown that people who eat breakfast tend to take in more nutrients (calcium, iron, protein and fiber), are more

20 January 2015 | PB Parenting |

alert, can concentrate better, and may even have better success with weight management. To get yourself off to a strong start, think about combining protein, carbohydrates and low-fat dairy. Some possibilities: whole grain cereal and a high protein yogurt, an English muffin with peanut butter, or an egg sandwich with fruit and yogurt. Eat Rough(age): Make Fiber a Priority Fiber, found in whole grain wheat, barley, corn and oats, as well as in fruits, vegetables and beans, helps keep things moving easily through the digestive tract. Remember that grain fiber has different nutritional benefits than fruits and vegetables, so you need both. Fiber is also filling, providing volume with few calories because our bodies don’t have the enzymes to break it down. But fiber can be digested and used for fuel by the 10 trillion bacteria that live in the colon and

prevent numerous health conditions. Get Your Facts Straight: If It Sounds Too Good to be True... Losing 10 pounds in two weeks only to regain it in eight makes no sense. Whether you’ve tried to go gluten-free, low carb or avoid all white foods, chances are quite high that your efforts didn’t result in long lasting effects. What does work? A balanced eating pattern and an active lifestyle. There is no one perfect diet, and anyone who says otherwise is typically selling a book or products promising weight loss. Registered dietitian nutritionists can be trusted to provide credible, evidencebased information that can be tailored to your lifestyle and taste preferences. In addition, eating patterns such as those recommended by the Mediterranean Diet, the DASH Diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) and MyPlate can provide guidance on the types of foods to include in your meals. Move It: Walk, Dance or Ride Your Way to Health Unless you use it often (2–3 times per week or more), skip the gym membership. Walk outside, walk the dog, dance in your kitchen, work in the garden or ride your bike to run errands. And, if possible, do it every day with friends for fun, and make it part of your regular lifestyle. Make It Stick: Schedule and Track Your Progress Make a schedule of your health goals, and keep track of progress by writing in a food and activity journal or calendar. Write things down; it makes them more likely to happen. Note things like how you feel before and after meals and exercise. You may be surprised by what you learn.

Fad diets come and go and return again. Here are some obvious clues that a diet is a fad rather than a realistic approach for becoming healthy. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9.

Sounds too good or easy to be true Promises rapid weight loss (5–10 pounds a week) or “miracle cures” Allows only certain foods or food groups (cutting out others) Promotes a product, special herb, vitamin or other compound Can only be “followed” temporarily but is not supervised by a doctor Hard to imagine or difficult to follow the diet forever Doesn’t recommend a form of exercise or says that it’s unnecessary Warns that one food or food group will make you seriously ill or worse Makes recommendations based on pseudo-science not endorsed by credible organizations or peer reviewed by other scientists 10. Cites research that is preliminary, based on animals, has very few subjects, or uses poor methodology The bottom line: Eat when you are hungry, strive for moderation and move more to feel good.

Tips to Trim Mindless Calories Eat mindfully Put all of your attention on the food and nowhere else. Eat for hunger Make sure you are eating because you are hungry and not for other reasons. Eat slowly You’ll stop eating sooner and register that you’ve had enough. Eat without guilt Consider whether the food is an “everyday” food or “sometimes” food and eat accordingly, enjoying every bite For more info, try these resources: US News and World Report Ranking of Best Overall Diets:health.usnews.com/best-diet/ best-overall-diets. Understanding Depression in Children & Teens

We all want our children to thrive, enjoy life and be happy. What happens when your kids are depressed? According to KidsHealth®, Depression is the most common mental health problem in the United States. Each year it affects 17 million people of all age groups, races, and economic backgrounds. As many as 1 in every 33 children may have depression; in teens, that number may be as high as 1 in 8. It is wise for parents and caregivers to learn about depression and how to help if your child, or a child you know, seems depressed. Types of depression include: major depression, dysthymia, adjustment disorder with depressed mood, seasonal affective disorder, and bipolar disorder or manic depression. All of these can affect children and teenagers. It is common that many young people are struggling. The rise of the internet has led to less young people connecting with others. They may have friends on Facebook but this is very different than being with others in real life. As a parent to two children, I know that technology is a part of my children’s

daily life. My six year old knows more about using a smartphone than I do. To combat too much screen time, I have set up some rules to make sure she is connecting with other children. Twice a week, she participates in gymnastics as well as regular playdates with her friends. Causes of Depression Depression usually isn’t caused by one event or reason, but is usually the result of several factors. Causes vary from person to person. Depression can be caused by lowered levels of neurotransmitters (chemicals that carry signals through the nervous system) in the brain, which limits a person’s ability to feel good. Genetics are likely involved as depression can run in families, so someone with a close relative who has depression may be more likely to experience it. Significant life events such as the death of a loved one, a divorce, a move to a new area, and even a breakup with a girlfriend or boyfriend can bring on symptoms of depression. Stress also can be a factor, and because the teen years can be a time of

emotional and social turmoil, things that are difficult for anyone to handle can be devastating to a teen. Diagnosing Depression Children with depression have described themselves as feeling hopeless about everything or feeling that nothing is worth the effort. They honestly believe that they are “no good,” that their world is a difficult place, and that they’re helpless to do anything about it. But for an accurate diagnosis of major depression to be made, a detailed clinical evaluation must be done by a medical or mental health professional (such as a psychologist or psychiatrist). To meet criteria for a diagnosis, five or more of these symptoms must be present for longer than 2 weeks: • •

a feeling of being down in the dumps or really sad for no reason a lack of energy, feeling unable to do

• • • • • • • • • •

the simplest task an inability to enjoy the things that used to bring pleasure a lack of desire to be with friends or family members feelings of irritability (especially common in kids and teens), anger, or anxiety an inability to concentrate a marked weight gain or loss (or failure to gain weight as expected), and too little or too much interest in eating a significant change in sleep habits, such as trouble falling asleep or getting up feelings of guilt or worthlessness aches and pains even though nothing is physically wrong a lack of caring about what happens in the future frequent thoughts about death or suicide

with your child and your doctor or others who know your child well. Many parents dismiss their concerns, thinking they’ll go away, or avoid acting because they may feel guilty or prefer to solve family problems privately. I have had the opportunity as a parent coach to help many others. It is common that parents worry that their kids depression is dangerous. The reality is children need socialization. I have seen many young people come out of their shell and learn to be around others. It starts by the parents taking steps to connect them. Many depressed young people are afraid to be around others. This makes it hard to go to school, attend activities and make friends. We all need to be supported and around others. If your child is struggling please know you are not alone. I have seen some of the most successful people admit there were times they were depressed and lonely.

It is learning to develop social skills which helps to change the way we interact with others. Deep in our hearts, we all want to be accepted and feel cared about. I hope in this New Year you consider teaching your children how to face these issues and develop the abilities to be more connected with others. Blake LeVine is a life coach located in Boca Raton. ave you ever wished you could feed your family organic foods, but when you check out the price tags your eyes pop out of your head? Yeah, me, too. So I decided to figure out some ways to feed my family of seven organic foods on a tight budget. Here’s what I found out: 1. Local Produce. Hit the farmer’s market to help out some local farmers while you save money on organic items. You can also try Local Harvest to search for farms, farmer’s markets, CSA (community supported agriculture) and more. 2. Grow your own organic garden. Sounds hard, doesn’t it? But trust me, if I can do it with my two non-green thumbs, so can you. My husband is usually the gardener in our family but one summer he was traveling and the responsibility fell on me! I found out how easy it is to pull weeds and water tomatoes, carrots and green beans. I finally realized we never bought any weed-killer or pesticides, which meant we basically have an organic garden. Even if you live in an apartment you can grow herbs in a

pot, have a patio garden or even consider renting space out from a local gardener. Renting space is still cheaper than buying organic fruits and veggies from the leading natural foods market. You can go online to browse garden space for rent by city. 3. Coupons and sales, baby! Watch, wait, then POUNCE on those items your family loves when they go on sale or when you have a sweet coupon. Head to My Organic Coupons. You’ll find a list of companies you can write to and ask for coupons for their specific products. Combine coupons with sales for some extreme couponing and you’ll be dancing in the aisles! 4. Seasonal Items. Why pay $5/carton for organic strawberries when they can get as low as $1.50/carton in the summertime? It’s easy to find out which fruits and vegetables are in season at Field to Plate’s site. 5. Stock Up. When you find a good deal, stock up! It’s easy to freeze certain

items while you make jellies, jams, etc. with the rest. Can your own spaghetti sauce, carrots, beets, green beans and more from what you grow yourself (sometimes you have way more than you can eat coming in all at once), get a good deal on at the farmer’s market or find on sale at the natural foods market. Canning is easier than it sounds, and you can find a used pressure cooker or borrow one for a weekend. Simply Canning has a wonderful site with many great resources, then hit YouTube for how-to videos. 6. Buy in bulk. Because you’re not paying for packaging and name brands, some organic basics like cereal, grains and beans are much cheaper when dispensed from a bulk container. 7. Skip the “junk.” Organic graham crackers and fruit snacks cost a fortune. Why not try some carrots and hummus or make your own yummy granola bars to save a bunch of green? 8. Bake Your Own. We all need a good carb fix now and then. Rather than pay crazy baked-good prices, find a used bread machine for a steal and make your own. It’s so easy these days to get the dough ready, pop it in the machine and just wait while your house fills up with the intoxicating aroma of baking bread. AllRecipes.com has tons of wonderful bread machine recipes that will impress your friends and family. Likewise, bake your own organic treats (think muffins and granola bars) using organic flour, cocoa, oatmeal, etc. that you find for cheap using my tips above! Make Working at Home Work for You BY MICHELLE SHIRK

orking and living in the same space offers many advantages, along with a few challenges. Whether you’re a stay-at-home parent considering taking the plunge into working from home or a working parent interested in starting a home-based career, the following five tips may help ease your transition. 1. Make a plan. Do some research before plunging into a new career. Whether you want to sell hand-crafted scarves on Etsy, become a virtual assistant or start an online travel agency, you’ll probably find a book or website designed to help you reach your goal. Commit to a business plan in writing and run it by your accountant to make sure you comply with all applicable tax regulations. For certain types of home businesses (i.e., food-related), you may also need an attorney’s assistance to secure a license or permit. 2. Find your best time for work and commit to it. How many hours of work would you like to complete each week? Are you a morning person or a night owl? Do your personal circumstances allow for at least an occasional babysitter

32 January 2015 | PB Parenting |

or must you plan all work around your children’s schedules? If you have a spouse or partner, what does his/her work schedule typically look like? The key is finding blocks of time to dedicate to uninterrupted work. If you work best in the morning or have a day job, make plans to rise an hour or two earlier than the rest of the household and head straight to your laptop. Those with children in preschool or grade school may be able to get tons of work done during school hours. If your kids are very small, don’t rule out the possibility of scheduling a bit of childcare via a family member, local daycare center or in-home helper. Even a few hours of time alone each week can go a long way in helping you launch your new career. 3. Multi-task while you work. Juggling parenting and household responsibilities alongside work can be overwhelming at times, even for families with two actively involved grown-ups. Thanks to modern appliances, though, it’s sometimes possible to do two things at once! I personally find that when I’m working at home, I’m much more relaxed and focused during my writing time if I run the dishwasher or washing machine while I work. If you want

to really go the extra mile, you could even start dinner in the slow-cooker and enjoy the smell of pork roast while you read, write or make phone calls. When you finish your work, you will also have made progress on one or more household tasks! 4. Set goals and monitor your progress. When you have only yourself to report to, it can be easy to let distractions supersede your work. While it’s not a big deal to take a “day off” here and there – after all, that’s one of the benefits of this arrangement – a series of unproductive days may leave you frustrated. Start each week by formulating a “To Do” list. Keep track of your time or output using a website such as www. mytomatoes.com or www.writtenkitten.net. If you need to bring in a certain amount of income to continue working at home, set financial goals and be sure your weekly “to dos” are designed to help you reach them. 5. Change your space. If your business is computer-based, the world is your office. Pack up your laptop and head to a nearby bookstore, library or fast food restaurant. On particularly nice days, you can even work outside. The change of scenery may energize you and inspire you to greater output, and if not, the peer pressure of having others watch you “work” probably will. While working outside a traditional office setting requires a great deal of focus and prioritization, there’s nothing quite like doing your job from the comfort of your own home – or your favorite coffee shop! I hope these tips will help you take the next step toward reaching your career goals, whatever they may be. Michelle Shirk is an attorney, freelance writer and proud mother of one. PB Travels Traveling Without Your Child Leaving your child at home while you travel may be a frightening and stressful prospect if you've never done it before — and even if you have! But you can prepare your child before you leave so that both of you can feel more comfortable. Are Kids Ready? Kids' readiness to stay at home depends largely on their age. Separation anxiety is common among kids between 6 months and 2 years old. For them, comfort is vital. Make sure they'll feel comfortable with a babysitter while you're gone and keep their normal daily routines going. If possible, it's better for kids at this stage to stay in their own home while parents are away rather than at someone else's house. Preschoolers might not understand why a parent is leaving, may worry that they've done something wrong to cause it, and might think that the separation is punishment. So it's important to assure them that this isn't the case and to explain the reason for a trip in terms they understand. Often, preschoolers will react to a parent's departure by regressing to

34 January 2015 | PB Parenting |

younger behaviors, such as whining or asking for a bottle. If your child reacts that way, a reminder from you that the behavior is not appropriate and that you won't change your travel plans can be effective. School-age kids might more directly show their feelings of sadness or anger about a parent's departure. Kids ages 6 to 8 may feel comforted by something of yours to keep close while you're gone. Older kids may seem extra-moody about a parent's departure and act angry one moment and clingy the next. So consider scheduling activities to engage them while you're gone. It's important to reassure them that you'll miss them, too, and that you trust that the babysitter will take good care of them. If your kids are teenagers, they might feel like they don't even need a babysitter while you're traveling. If you also have younger children, you can explain that the caregiver is there because of them and ask your teen to help the babysitter look after the younger kids while you are gone. If you have only a teen and are not comfortable with leaving him or her alone, it is important to convey your

concerns and to explain why you feel more comfortable having someone else in the house. If you do decide to leave your teen alone, establish clear rules for the time that you're away. And it's a good idea to have a friend or neighbor look in on your teen while you're gone. Preparing the Caregiver If possible, try to have the person caring for your kids visit before you leave. This will help them be more comfortable with that person and your plans to go away. It's also a chance to review the house rules, the kids' daily routines, and other important issues with the caregiver. Things to cover: • proper use of the car seat • tips for comforting your child • babyproofing or childproofing measures that are taken in your home • rules your child follows with strangers • the layout of your house and neighborhood • what to do in the event of a fire, including information on where the fire extinguishers and the fire detectors are in the house • what to do in the event of a medical emergency, including where and how to reach you at all times • a list of important phone numbers • a record of kids' allergies, medications, vaccinations, and medical history • where to find a flashlight and spare batteries • your travel itinerary, including times when you might be unreachable

While You're Away Check in with the caregiver regularly, if possible. Think carefully about how much contact will comfort your child while you're away. Some kids might need postcards or a daily phone call or email message, whereas others might get more upset when they hear a parent's voice. Review basic details about your travel plans with your kids before you leave. You can mark your travel dates on a calendar to help them understand how long you'll be gone or instruct the caregiver to cross off each day at bedtime.

Mondays OR Wednesdays 3:30pm 5:00pm Ages 5+ $30 per week 1st class starts Weds. Jan. 7th with show on April 1st 2nd class starts Mon. Jan. 19th with show on April 13th

Be prepared for your child's behavior when you return. Young kids sometimes feel angry at their parents for leaving and act out or ignore them when they return. If this happens, provide your child with the same sort of reassurance and discipline that you would in any other situation. Certainly, you should try to hug or kiss your child when you return but don't push it if your child is still angry.
