Letter From The Publisher
Greetings, Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there! Motherhood is an often a thankless job that is long hours, no sick time, no pay, (well there are hugs and kisses!) You deserve a day off - to help facilitate that check out busy local mom Samantha Clark’s article on page 8 “A Family’s Guide: What Moms Really Want on Mother’s Day”. It is perfectly acceptable to cut this out and leave it out for your children or significant other to find. We hope that you enjoy your day of rest. “The natural state of motherhood is unselfishness. When you become a mother, you are no longer the center of your own universe. You relinquish that position to your children.” ~ Jessica Lange. After becoming a mom, there is no doubt that perhaps not only your universe shifts but your personality too! So what kind of Mom are you? Check out our Quiz on page 14 to find out! Also a quick thank you to everyone for making our 2nd annual Summer Camp Expo a big success! Thank you South Florida Science Center and Aquarium for hosting, Brian D. Guralnick Injury Lawyers for covering the first 200 adult entrants, our entertainers, Patty Shukla, Magic Jack Maxwell and characters from Princess Parties & Special Events and of course to all the families and camp vendors who attended! We can’t wait for next year! Happy Parenting!

A Family’s Guide: What Moms Really Want on Mother’s Day BY: SAMANTHA G. CLARK
“I will look after you and I will look after anybody you say needs to be looked after, any way you say. I am here. I brought my whole self to you. I am your mother.” – Maya Angelou
extra hour would make a huge difference. Or even better, take a nap! I am sure you can’t remember the last time you slept during the day without being sick in bed with the flu.
Mothers shape the world. They raise children who become scientists that cure diseases. They create teachers who motivate our youth to change and better society. But most of all, moms are the people we run to when we need to share anything. It doesn’t matter if it’s good or bad, important or inconsequential; because to your mom you are always the smartest, funniest and most interesting person around. Mother’s Day is a day where we finally give thanks to the most underappreciated job. So this year, I am going to let you in on a little secret and tell you what moms really want on their special day.
Help - Moms are the ultimate multi-taskers and somehow manage to organize an entire family. We make sure everyone is doing what they should, when they should. Every day we somehow manage to cook dinner, while helping with homework, and also changing a diaper. For today, ask for help when you need it. Instead of giving, “the look,” actually ask your children and husband to lend a hand. You know the look. The “where is the baby’s bottle” look. The “please put your dirty clothes in the laundry room instead of your floor” look. The “stop fighting and get along” look. Just for one day, ask your family for help and relinquish some of your responsibilities.
Sleep - Whether you are a working mom or a stay at home mom, you need more sleep. You are usually the one your kids wake up in the middle of the night for a cup of water or “just because.” You are the first one awake in the morning to get the house ready for school and work, which subsequently means you are usually the first one asleep at night. So this Mother’s Day, let your family know that you deserve to sleep-in. Even an 8 May 2016 | PB Parenting |
Brunch with friends - When was the last time you went somewhere with a friend? Better yet, when was the last time you sat down at a table and ate something that took longer than a banana or some old granola bar you found in the bottom of your purse? Brunch is a perfect way for you to relax and enjoy some much needed friend time and also appreciate the culinary

experience you have been longing to try. (Mimosas are an added bonus) Pampering - I can almost guarantee you that it has been over a year since you have had a little pampering. I don’t mean a haircut or a quick manicure either. I mean an hour massage followed by an hour facial. Serious pampering people. You need this. You need to relax and actually turn off your brain from worrying and stress. You will feel rejuvenated and ready to take on the world. Or at least take on soccer practice with 3 cranky kids and 90-degree weather. Day off from chores - You do more than you realize. Have your ever written a list of everything you accomplish in a day? How do all of the dishes and eating utensils become clean every day? Does your family think their clothes wash themselves and then magically fold and climb into the closet? There are many mundane things we would rather not do, but must, so the house runs smoothly.
Take the day off. Let your family empty the dishwasher, fold the laundry, dare I say— clean their own bathroom. You do all of this, every day. Here’s a chance to watch your family (try) to maintain the house as well as their super mom. Alone time - We are with children or coworkers all day, every day. A little alone time to do whatever we please is a great and inexpensive present. You can read, go to the beach or just be alone with your thoughts for the day. An added bonus is not hearing “Mommy” for a few hours. Let your family know it isn’t that you don’t want to be with them, it is that you just want a little “me” time. And that’s ok! Mommy memories - I never believed my mom when she said that all she wanted as a gift was a picture from me. Now as a mother, I truly understand the sentiment. I love all of my kids’ artwork/scribbles. I recently met a mom who transferred all of

“GROSS” For Summer Exhibition “Grossology: The (Impolite) Science of the Human Body” to open on Saturday, May 7 What is and is not snot – that is the question – and many more that will be answered by the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium’s summer 2016 exhibition, Grossology: The (Impolite) Science of the Human Body, based on the best-selling book. It will open to the public on Saturday, May 7 with the goal of educating children ages 6-to-14 and their families about why their bodies produce mushy, oozy, crusty, scaly, stinky things, which many people consider gross.
takes guests on a tour through a nose replica – standing at 10-feet-tall; “Burp Man,” a larger than life cartoon character, who drinks from a three-foot-tall soda can pumped by visitors, details the cause of burps; and “Click Ick” allows visitors an opportunity to play nine different activities, including exploratory labs, puzzles, games and more. As visitors wind their way through 5,000-square-feet of human science, they will also learn about skin issues, “gas attacks” and vomit.
“Kids love gross,” said Lew Crampton, Science Center CEO. “The more gross, the more engaged in learning they become, which is why we selected Grossology as our summer exhibition. Grossology is incredibly interactive and is aimed at educating kids about their bodies and how they function. We are committed to doing whatever it takes to engage young Einsteins to show an interest in science – including getting ‘gross’ for the summer. It is also important to engage kids when they are naturally curious, so they continue to be curious.”
Grossology is based on the best-selling book by science teacher Sylvia Branzei. The colorful exhibit incorporates sophisticated animatronics and imaginative exhibits to actively engage visitors. Learning is achieved through the use of interactive experiences, challenges and just plain fun. Grossology
Grossology takes visitors on a tour of their bodies, by way of Magic School Bus-style, as they literally step through the mouth of the exhibit. Once inside the exhibit, “Nigel NoseIt-All” will explain why people have runny noses, allergies and sneeze; “Tour Du Nose”

If most of your answers were: (A) Crunchy Mama From food to cleansers, you take an all-natural approach to life. You are committed to a healthy lifestyle and to feeding your family wholesome, unprocessed foods. You either belong to a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) for locally sourced foods or you grow your own. You typically shop at places like Whole Foods and Sprouts with your cloth bags in hand. If you wear makeup, you keep it simple. You opted for a natural birth with your children, hired a doula and had a birth plan in place when you were pregnant. You have a “breast is best” philosophy for feeding your babies. What others admire about you: Your commitment to living a more holistic, simpler life. (B) Butterfly Mama - You rarely have a hair out of place and other moms are constantly wondering how you manage to look so classy and put together all of the time. You have a quiet confidence and

own your fashionable style. You not only care about how you look, you also have the attitude that self-care is important to being a better mother. Your home further reflects your creativity and is a show stopper that is as comfortable as it is stylish. Whether you shop at garage sales or high-end department stores, you always know what looks good and your kids generally share your sense of style. What others admire about you: Your charming personality and fashion sense. (C) Connected Mama - Social media has created a perfect storm of connection for you. You not only get to chat daily with friends and family from afar, you can share entertaining bits and pieces of your daily life with friends who may be right around the corner. Networking comes with ease and you manage to find friends where ever you go. You frequently organize moms’ night outs, get togethers and events. Your smart phone is your favorite device. Of all the moms listed, you are probably the most sleep deprived. But you thrive on busyness and tend to be exceptionally organized. What others admire about you: Your vast network and your resourcefulness. (D) Sports Mama - You love sports as much as your kids. Your competitive nature can get you a little riled up during games. You push your children to always do their best whether in school, sports or life. You typically wear your hair in a pony tail, sporting a sun visor and a t-shirt that says “Baseball/Soccer/Football Mom.” You come to games prepared with a cooler full of healthy snacks, bottled water, blankets, an umbrella and a comfortable bleacher chair. Your favorite mode of transportation is your SUV or minivan to accommodate the sports equipment, random water bottles and any team members who need rides. What others admire about you: Your can-do, upbeat and playful personality.
(E) Free Spirit Mama - You tend to take a go-with-the-flow approach to life and prefer to live for the present. Your favorite outfit is whatever is clean and ready to throw on first thing in the morning. You don’t let a screaming child rush you into decisions you aren’t comfortable with. You aren’t one to hurry to urgent care the minute your child sneezes, falls or nibbles on some sand. You don’t worry too much about the daily messes and chaos of life. For now, you say, let’s celebrate the moments and embrace the journey. What others admire about you: Your reliable, even-keeled sense of calm.
