If you decide that a funeral plan is not for you, you must make sure that your wishes are known, money is available immediately and that at least one of your loved ones has an NIE number. In line with Spanish law, direct cremation usually takes place 24-72 hours after death and prolonging this will incur extra mortuary expenses. Death is always traumatic and exhausting – why make it even harder for those left behind. If you would like more information or a quotation, please contact one of my offices, email info@jennifercunningham.net or visit the website www.jennifercunningham.net

Especially for the Expats and their families, funerals can be a very stressful and complicated experience. When you purchase a funeral plan, you are making the whole process far easier and less stressful for your loved ones. Prices are fixed, with either full payment or with a small deposit, and a payment schedule over 60 months which is interest free. There is no medical required, no health restrictions and no limit on age. In Spain, the funeral usually happens very quickly after death, which can be frightening and daunting for your family members to deal with. I cannot understand why you would not organise this, to help your loved ones at this very difficult time. One phone call and the plan goes into operation. There is a choice of three plans, and all the documentation required is included.

Over the last few months, there has been an upheaval regarding funeral plans in the UK. Every week, it would appear that there was a new company providing plans. Most of these companies have now disappeared due the new regulations for funeral plan providers in the UK, as they are now regulated by the FCA. However, due to these changes, and after a considerable amount of research, I decided to provide my clients with a Spanish regulated funeral plan company, which has been providing funeral plans in Spain for many years, and is fully registered and regulated with both the Spanish authorities and the DGS. Why choose a funeral plan?

Many of our readers will know Fernando. For years he has been Larry's right-hand man at his garage in Benitachell. Approximately six months ago, Larry retired and Fernando bought out the business. Specialising in vehicle servicing and repair, Fernando and his team, still based in Benitachell, have literally decades of experience and can deal with all makes and models of cars. Fernando has always believed that the key to a successful business is honesty and good customer service. With their friendly and understanding approach, you'll know exactly where you stand, and what to expect. We all hate surprises and cars have a habit of throwing curveballs. This is an unavoidable fact in the motor trade. However Fernando will always communicate what's happening ASAP and will then do his best to minimise any stress. Fernando would like to take the opportunity to thank customers and is happy to welcome back previous customers to the business. If you've got a car, you need to keep it serviced, and therefore you need Fernando's in Benitachell. ● Logic fully & licensed financial advisers, covering the Costa Blanca, Murcia and Canary We can travel to you, or you can visit our office at Calle Andres Lambert 24, 1B, Jávea. Tel: 965 020 444. Email: Web: www.logicfinancialconsultants.com.

One fundamental difference that sets us apart as a family-run business is that our clients get to know us as a family rather than individual advisers working for a particular company. In turn, we view our clients as “our” clients as opposed to “Ian's” or “George's”, which you commonly find in larger organisations. This, coupled with the fact we have multiple advisers qualified to UK Diploma status level 4, allows us to provide an uninterrupted service – one designed to last for generations to come.

Financial Consultants are

Financial Advicefromour family to yours Continuity of Advice – and adviser! Have you been able to maintain the relationship with your UK / Spanish adviser? Are you looking for a new adviser?

Many individuals arrive in Spain hoping to maintain the relationship they have with their financial adviser from their previous country of residence. Unfortunately, this is not always possible as it is becoming increasingly difficult for financial advisers to service clients who move to another country. Around the world, regulators and networks are closely monitoring the relationship advisers have with clients and particular importance is being given to where clients receive advice and by who. Clients should receive the best and most impartial advice available, but how is this possible if the adviser is unfamiliar with the legal and tax obligations of the new country of residence? We have picked up many clients over the years who find themselves in a similar situation to the above and one of the most common (and pleasing) pieces of feedback we receive is that our continuity of advice – and importantly adviserprovides them with real peace of mind. In the UK, it is not uncommon to see financial advisers stay at the same company for years, allowing individual investors to build up rapport and trust with the adviser over time. However, the same cannot always be said for Spain with many of the larger organisations having high turnovers of staff, often leaving clients without knowing who to contact. In addition to this being a costly consequence for the company itself, the secondary effect for the clients is that they frequently have to wait an avoidable amount of time to receive responses to emails and calls. It is then a guessing game as to who may turn up to see them at the next review meeting! In short, aside from the additional trust and customer confidence touched on above, business and adviser continuity can significantly reduce disruptions for clients when dealing with important financial matters. At Logic, our core business objective has always been to provide clients with an unrivalled level of service and this commitment has already reaped rewards having previously won the “Excellence in Client Service” trophy for Europe, awarded by International Adviser.

IT'S TIME FOR SOME PLANETS - THE NIGHT SKY IN SEPTEMBER

● To find out more about observing and astronomy, email us at vegabaja.astronomygroup@gmail.com.

It’s the beginning of a great time of year for looking at the night sky, and there’s some real wonders to look at. For quite a while two of our most spectacular planets, Jupiter and Saturn have only been visible from our part of the world in the early morning, and enthusiastic as I am, I have no intention of leaving my bed at 5am to look at the sky. Let’s start with Jupiter, by the middle of the month it will be nicely above the horizon in the east / southeast at 10pm. You can't miss it, it will be the brightest star like thing you see and it looks a bit orange. Historically, Jupiter is very important, it was the first planet Galileo looked at with a telescope and recognised that it had moons. He soon realised that the little points of light he saw were circling the planet, that in turn led to a better understanding of how the solar system works. That's an enviable legacy to leave behind, I don’t envy him his problems with the church of the day though. With a pair of 10x50 binoculars or a telescope and a clear night you can see the four Galilean moons, Io, Callisto, Ganymede and Europa. Look at them over a few hours or a couple of nights and you too will see them circling the planet. Incidentally, Europa might be the most interesting place to explore in the solar system, but I’ll save that for another time.

The Arts Society Marina Alta will once again be hosting an exhibition for local artists to display their artistic talents on 28 September, at Salones Carrasco, Cami Cabanes 15, Jávea from 10am to 4pm. Artists will be able to display their works in a bright and friendly atmosphere, sell directly to the discerning public, receive commissions and use the event to discuss ideas and share experiences. At this time there are still a small number of tables which are not yet reserved, so for those wishing to display their works now is the time to contact Peter Eales at the Arts Society for more details at cm.marinaalta@theartssociety.org

If you’ve got a telescope, look for the famous great red spot, a vast anticyclonic storm that has been raging for hundreds of years and is bigger than the Earth. Now for Saturn, probably the most beautiful thing most of us will ever see with a telescope, it’s the planet with the bright rings. Mid month it will be in the southeast, and higher in the sky than Jupiter. It won’t be as bright as Jupiter, more like a bright star, but it is the brightest thing in that area. With your 10x50 binoculars, you can't make out the rings, but they do make the planet look oval. A telescope changes things, about 100x magnification will show the rings nicely, and with a decent 'scope and 150x, you can make out one of the gaps in the rings, Cassini’s division. There are over 80 moons around Saturn, Titan is the most famous, and the second biggest moon in the solar system (after Ganymede). You can see Titan easily with a telescope, but with binoculars, that's tricky. Conventional wisdom says that only unusually large binoculars will work, but twice now I’ve met people who say they’ve seen it with 10x50s. So, if anyone has seen Titan with ordinary binoculars, please let me know, with the time and location please. One last thing to look at whilst you have your binoculars out, look in the south, you’ll be looking at the milky way, one arm of our Galaxy, millions of stars in a vast beautiful arc across the sky. That’s all for this month, except for a reminder, we are having a public star gazing night on October 4th. We’ll have a couple of telescopes to look through at the Moon and hopefully Saturn and Jupiter. We will be at on the seafront at Punta Prima, just south of Torrevieja, setting up from 7.30pm, ready for darkness after 8pm.

Cars' Emission Stickers or Environmental Badges. Do you know the meaning? Where can you get them?

If you want to drive through some downtown locations such as Barcelona and Madrid it is mandatory to display it because they are classified as low emission areas. BUT in 2025, in the capital Madrid, ALL vehicles will have to display it. On its web, the DGT has all the information about it, and on this link, you will find out what sticker your vehicle must https://sede.dgt.gob.es/es/vehiculos/distintivo-ambiental/display;

Despite the pandemic, during these last years the Traffic Department has carried out several modifications to the Spanish Traffic Law and we would like to explain them to you. We will also review old topics such as the documents you must take with you, mandatory equipment in your vehicle, how to drive in a roundabout, etc.

Those associations interested, please send us an email to Duration:n332facebook@hotmail.com40minutesapproximately.

Once the fine is delivered by hand, the process starts and they only have 20 days to appeal it or benefit from the discount. After several months of waiting, some followers have contacted us asking about when they will receive the second notification to appeal, and now they have lost the right to do so and will have to pay the full amount of the fine. We would like to share this information because we don't want this situation to keep happening.

If you are someone who travels using an electric scooter, you also have rules to comply with for your safety and that of all road users, for example: - 1 person only - Use of headphones prohibited - You cannot drive on the pavements Do not use electric scooters outside the city limits. These vehicles can only be used in urban areas. And something that must be considered, is that each town council can regulate the use of these types of vehicles in their municipality.

The N-332 are a group of Spanish Traffic Police Officers who decided to create a Facebook group to inform all ex-pats and tourists about Spanish traffic laws as they think it is unfair to fine them for breaking rules they didn't know about. You can find them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/DrivingSpain/ and follow them to keep up to date as they only share official information. Road Safety is a thing for everyone. Drive responsibly!

Remember that our talks are completely free.

Traffic Offences - Common Mistake

When some people receive a fine from a Police officer, they wait to receive another notification by post, and then they begin the process to appeal. This is wrong!

After two years without giving any talks, from October, N332 staff will start again to visit associations with their new presentations.

he Bunion or Hallux Valgus is a deformity of the foot caused by a deviation of the first toe towards the middle axis of the foot and a deviation of the first metatarsal towards the outer edge of the foot accompanied by irregular bone growth in the first metatarsal head and articular incongruity of the metatarsophalangeal joint. This causes pain due to inflammation of the soft tissues of the area from constant friction against footwear and from the structural and mechanical alteration due to the bone deviation.

When a patient wishes to undergo an operation a professional should study each case individually, taking into account the age, health status, lifestyle ... etc. At Portalet Clinic, we will explain in detail and alleviate any worries without compromise.

It is recommended to operate on bunions when they are painful, when osteoarthritis appears or the structural deformity affects walking correctly which in turn affects other levels of the locomotor system. It is also advisable to perform surgery in cases in which as a result of the bunion, the toes are deforming like when the second toe appears hammer-like.

We perform minimum incision surgery. As its name suggests, it is done using minimal skin incisions, usually 2 to 4mm. Through these millimetric incisions we can reach the soft tissues and bone, without causing injury to the adjacent tissues.

Bunions or HAV?

Advantages of Minimal Incision Surgery: - Immediate recovery as the procedure is minimal. - The patient walks away with a post-surgical shoe without crutches or help. - After just 48 hours the patient can continue life as normal. - Almost painless. - No fixing bolts or needles used. One of the drawbacks of open surgery is the use of fixing materials, with Minimal Incision Surgery fixations are not necessary as the soft tissues themselves, which we have respected, the joint capsule and a light dressing are responsible for this. - Local anesthetic, only affecting the foot, so the dose used is less. - No hemostasia (restriction of blood flow). As the size of the incision is so small, there is little bleeding so there is no need for a tourniquet, thus avoiding all risks of cutting blood flow. - Less risk of infection. The small size of the incisions also decreases the risk of infection. - Barely visible scaring. Hormone Replacement Therapy Hormones are an important part of our body’s messenger system. These chemicals send signals to almost every part of our body, coordinating everything from appetite, digestion, immune function, libido, and mood. When these hormones become even a fraction out of balance, it has a direct impact on our health and well-being. Hormone replacement therapies are prescribed to rebalance the bodies hormones. One such, natural therapy is Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT). These hormones are derived from plant oestrogens and are chemically identical to those produced by the human body. They are designed so our body uses them in the same way it does our own hormones. Oestrogen, progesterone, and testosterone are among those most replicated and can be administered in various ways. Now available are specialised gels and creams that are tailor made specifically for the individual patient’s needs. BHRT can be used to treat men as well as women but is most frequently used to ease symptoms of perimenopause and menopause. Common symptoms like hot flushes and night sweats, vaginal dryness, sleep problems, concentration issues, mood swings and lack of libido can all be successfully treated. It is also used to ease symptoms of cancer treatment and to treat adrenal, insulin, thyroid disorders, osteoporosis, and fibromyalgia. www.femalefocusonline.comFocus On Costa Blanca Magazine September 2022 Page 12

UNIVERSITY OF THE THIRD AGE – U3A

There are many groups of U3A on the Costa Blanca and their contact details can be obtained through the social pages of the CBNews or from the internet.

Putting forward U3A Marina Baixa as an example: This group meet in the Casa de Cultura of Alfaz del Pi on the 4th Monday of the month. Their function is coordinated by a committee of 10. Within this branch of U3A are a number of sub-groups that members can join for example: Crafts, Wine and Dine, Computer IT, Spanish conversation, Exercise for fun as in the Strollers, Petanc, TenPin Bowling and an important travel section for excursions in Spain or planning Christmas holidays. Most importantly there is a contact for any member needing Theseassistance.activities are in line with the concepts described in the first paragraph and they work as any member can testify. Noone needs to lead a lonely life, if no sub-group appeals to you then just enjoy the monthly meetings and the speakers and maybe a meal with other members after the meeting. In time you may discover a new interest and realise how interesting life can be when you are a member of U3A. To contact the Alfas group: Secretary: u3ambsec@gmail.com or just turn up for the monthly meeting at 11am in the Casa de Cultura. The next meeting will be September 26.

What is U3A?

www.femalefocusonline.com Page 13

There is no universally accepted model for the U3A which was founded in 1973 by one Pierre Velas, but it is described as “an international movement whose aims are the educational stimulation of mainly retired members of the Community who come together to continue their educational, social and creative interests in an informal and friendly environment”. Third Age? Meaning an individual past the active phases of their life when they had parental and financial responsibilities and now with the opportunity to plan their retirement. At this point an individual probably has a great deal of knowledge and experience that could be of use to others in their community.

The most well-known groups are in Calpe, Moraira-Teulada, Vall de Pop, Torrevieja and also Marina Baixa based in Alfaz del Pi.

The biggest problem I have found after working in Spain for over two decades, is that 99.99% of Spanish builders and “gardeners” do not have the first clue about how to install a real grass lawn. I’ve seen it so many times I cannot tell you. Hint, you cannot throw down some soil and seed and water it and expect a beautiful lawn. This is why the vast majority of lawns don’t work here.

Lawns and why you shouldn’t have a natural one.

I have recently been to see a nice couple who have decided within the six months or so of being in the new property that they want to get rid of their natural lawn and change it for an artificial grass lawn. Bravo, I absolutely agree. Then lawn is terrible, it has the wrong type of grass in it for the Spanish climate, it is full of weeds and is a general let down. Now I’ve said this sort of thing a thousand times. It’s not that you cannot have a real lawn in Spain, you can, but are you really prepared to put in the money and time required to have one?

If you build a house on bad, cheap and poorly made foundations, it won’t stay up for long. It’s the same thing for everything in life, we all know the general rules, if you do a good basis, lay the foundations etc then you have a better chance of succeeding with what ever you are doing above. It’s exactly the same for a lawn. Too many times people think it’s fine, it’s ok, it will live. I’m sorry, it won’t, not unless you get lucky. To make a natural lawn work you have to have the right amounts of soil, the necessary prep work, the correct size irrigation system, the correct seed and required chemicals to protect that seed, everything, and the whole process is far more complex than most people ever give it credit for. And that’s the rub, like any job done properly it means there is cost involved. To prep a lawn properly costs money, to maintain it properly costs money, to water it costs money. Do yourself a favour, don’t waste your time, your energy or your money, put in an Artificial Grass lawn. None of the hassle, none of the looking at bare patches etc for years thinking it’s ugly. Deal with it from the beginning. I have had negative comments in the past via social media regarding artificial grass, and often from people in the UK. Well we don’t live in the UK and we don’t have good rainfall, in fact artificial grass in the UK isn’t a stupid idea for lots of reasons but that’s a story for another day. The main point is don’t get lost in a nostalgic thought about having a beautiful natural lawn in Spain, because it is incredibly hard and costly to achieve, save yourself years of hassle and money. Speak to Artificial Grass Spain, we are installing up and down the Costa Blanca all the time, give us a call or drop us an email and we will come and help you get a beautiful hassle free lawn.

Without get too buried in the science stuff, walking increases oxygen saturation, blood vessel growth, serotonin levels and it reduces stress hormones. That all adds up to a happier you. During and after exercise, endorphins and dopamine – more feel-good chemicals – are released into the body and brain, usually with mood-boosting effects. Sounds fabulous I know. Another specific benefit of walking is that it is bilaterally stimulating, which can lead to a clearer mind. Bilateral stimuli occur in a rhythmic left-right pattern, like walking or following a tennis ball with your eyes. Walking can also give you a much-needed energy boost by improving blood flow throughout the body and brain. It’s important to understand that physical activity does not need to be intense to be considered beneficial in reducing the risk of clinical depression, and walking can be just enough. Oh yes, and apart from a healthier mind, walking will of course give us a healthier body. So, as we look forward to the months ahead I strongly recommend everyone considers adding walks to their weekly plans. Don’t forget, walking with other people for one or two days per week can have enormous benefits. So get your friends involved. Physical exercise combined with positive social interactions can improve negative moods, ward off depression, and improve self-esteem. I organise monthly walks to suit different fitness levels, locations and styles. It's a great way to stay fit and meet new people. Follow me on Facebook @walkyourwaywell or contact me on WhatsApp to join my group. Some seriously exciting excursions are lined up for autumn. I look forward to welcoming you. Try to walk 3 days a week for 10-30 minutes at a time. If you’d like advice, support or help with motivation why not drop me a line. I’m here to help you Walk Your Way Well. admin@walkyourwaywell.com

www.femalefocusonline.com Page 21

As the temperatures drop and autumn arrives it is an exciting time for us all to try to increase our physical exercise again. Those niggling wobbly bits and annoying extra kilos can be tackled without battling the crazy heat. And so, this month, I’m taking an opportunity to remind us all how lucky we are to have the amazing, free, accessible, non-impact activity of WALKING to enjoy. Let's boot up and get out there. Taking a daily walk is one piece of advice that crops up repeatedly when considering our mental, physical and emotional health. Doctors, therapists and personal trainers ALL sing walking praises. So, what’s the deal? Do daily walks really make you feel better? And how easy is it to weave them into your routine? We are all busy and distracted and we believe we don’t have time to go for walks…. Well, THAT is the crux of the problem right there. We have our priorities skewed! Re-write your to-do list and put YOU at #1.

Case studies explain that walking, as with exercise in general, has been proven to lessen symptoms of depression and anxiety while improving cognitive function, sleep and memory. So, in short, walking genuinely makes us feel good. Who doesn't want more of that?

Spot the 13 differences(answers in the classified pages)

TAURUS You are doubting your ability to make a decision and will be relying on others to help you see things with more clarity as your mind seems to be all over the place at the moment. Things will start to become clearer as you have fewer things to deal with.

SAGITTARIUS You have more than proved your worth recently, so now might be a good time to voice some of your ideas. They will have to be broached with care or they may leave others feeling they are no longer important or needed.

LEO You can see a crisis brewing and it takes a while to know with confidence if you should get involved. Don’t second guess, wait until you know for sure which way you want to go. Either way you will need to be prepared to pick up the pieces.

PISCES What you give is what you get. If you are not giving your best to a situation, how do you expect it to turn out well. You are so stretched that you cannot give 100% to everything. Work out how to cut back on your commitments.

CANCER Children will be the main focus this month, mainly the joy they bring to making memories together. This will have a fantastic effect not just for you but for your extended family and friends.

Pwww.femalefocusonline.com age 24

LIBRA Your personal goals and ambitions need to take centre stage at the moment as you have been pleasing everyone else for too long now. Let them know how you feel and find out if they want to come along with you on your journey or if you will be doing it alone.

AQUARIUS And rest.... Try to give yourself a complete break this month from whatever it is that has been causing you so much stress lately. Move away from it for a while and once you return you will once again find the joy it gave you.

GEMINI Work will be keeping you busy but fortunately without too many issues. Someone close to you needs to be reassured that they are still important as they feel their role slipping away.

Things are settling down which means everyone has a bit more patience. Children will need more time spending with them this month in order to feel more settled. It may seem trivial to you but to them it isn’t. Help them put it into perspective.

SCORPIO

CAPRICORN This month will start with more frustration than usual. Everything you do seems to turn out badly. Stop, breathe and start again. Things will return to normal if you don’t over think it.

VIRGO Again this month family takes a back seat as you try to move forward with your plans. You are fully committed now and determined to see this through, just make sure you don’t leave important people behind.

ARIES Financial plans should be carefully looked at as they may not appear as good as they first seem. Make sure you look at all possibilities before you choose. Love is in the air towards the end of the month leaving you feeling on top of the world.
