WHAT A CLEVER STAR - The Cepheid Variable

This month's title doesn't seem at all connected with last month's offering about how to measure a stars distance, but bear with me, it is. I talked last time, as part of the 'how do we know that' series about using parallax to find some stars distances from us, but that only works for stars that are relatively close. So, there are two important things we need to consider, firstly there are billions of stars, mostly a very long way off, and secondly most stars are variable. A variable star is one that changes in brightness as seen from Earth, and yes, the Sun is a variable star, but only by a miniscule amount.

Stars can change brightness for several reasons, and there is one type that is important to us, the Cepheid variable, first discovered over 100 years ago by a lady called Henrietta Swan Leavitt in the constellation Cepheus, hence the name. The thing that's special about these stars is that they are totally regular in the time that it takes to go from bright to dimmer to bright again. Any of them that have a period of for example, 34 days will be the same real brightness. If an astronomer looks at two of them and one has a maximum brightness that's dimmer than the other it must be further away. If you are clever, and have been taught how, you can then get a Cepheids distance from its brightness. Modern instruments for measuring all this have become so accurate that it's possible to get incredibly accurate results, in fact to about 0.001 percent. All this is also a perfect example of the hard slog in taking measurements and doing calculation the professional astronomers have to do.

That leaves us with the problem of measuring all the other stars. Study of the Cepheid variables over the decades led to a lot of work on the make up of stars, for example the mix of hydrogen, helium and a lot of other stuff. Eventually it became possible to work out that stars of a particular mix were very likely to have a certain absolute brightness and from that to estimate its distance. If that last bit sounds like a bit of a fudge, that's because it is, and would make a professional shudder. The truth is that the actual process is very complicated and full of math, but it's the result of the work of hundreds, probably thousands of people over a long time, and it works.

That's quite enough of the heavy thinking, so a bit of news. As I write this the Europa Clipper spacecraft had lifted off to go to the smallest of Jupiter's Galilean moons. This might just be the cleverest probe ever launched and in six years when it gets there will probably change so much of what we believe we know, just maybe even finding traces of microbial life from the oceans under Europa's frozen surface. We live in astonishing times, things have advanced so much since I saw the first space launch. I can't help wishing that world leaders had progressed as much.

The association, formed in 1988, exists to foster comradeship amongst those who, having been awarded an official flying badge, have qualified to operate military aircraft and are serving or have served, as military aircrew in the armed forces of the United Kingdom or those nations which are allies of the United Kingdom or the Commonwealth.

Now that Halloween has been and gone, the focus is now turning to Christmas and New Year.

There are lots of restaurants serving festive menus in the lead up to Christmas, with many venues already booking up fast, so if this is something you want to do with friends / family / work colleagues you need to act pretty quickly.

With Black Friday at the end of the month I am going to try to bag myself some bargains and get ahead with some Christmas shopping. Although the kids are no longer kids but young adults, it should be a bit kinder on the purse – or at least that is my intention.....sorry kids!!!

It has come to the time of year to do the 6 monthly wardrobe changeover. This year I vow to be quite strict with myself and actually have a good clear out at the same time, and donate several bags to worthy charities. Although I haven't quite got to the stage of needing the duvet, I don't think it's going to be too long.

As always in November wear your poppy with pride as Remembrance Day is coming very soon ...lest we forget.

Macmillan Fundraising Success

Wow, wow, wow....Yet another massively successful coffee morning for Macmillan was held at Jolly's Bar in October and a huge thanks goes out to everyone that attended and took part, whether on the day or during one of the many fundraising events that was held during 2024.

The huge selection of mouth watering cakes this year surpassed all expectations and the generosity from everyone that donated towards the event through cakes or raffle prizes is always appreciated.

An astounding 2,455€ was raised on the day itself through cake sales, a raffle, tombola, kids games and music bingo to name just a few, including a large donation from Claptons Golf Society. This amount added to the funds already raised throughout the year with various events including contributions from Jolly's Golf Society, has taken the total raised in 2024 to 5936€!!!

Sarah Devonport who has been the instigator in this fundraising for the last 8 years has decided to retire from the Macmillan fund raising (at least for the time being as she has a wedding to plan next year) and what a way to go....As a community the total amount raised over the 8 years is a whopping 38,196.72€!!! So a huge congratulations to everyone involved in achieving something most people could only dream about doing, this amount of money will certainly have had a massive impact on so many peoples lives.

Following on from Macmillan, Jolly's Golf Society are keen to keep the charity fundraising going with their “Driving for charities” campaign (sponsored by Jolly's Bar and Rightmove Insurance). Through their team members contributions, they are in the process of raising funds for underprivileged local children, with the aim to spread the Christmas magic by supplying some gifts.

It reassuringly pleasing to know there are so many kind, generous and caring people out there.

Take a walk through an inland wonderland

The Alicante region is blessed with beautiful, natural places from its beaches to its inland natural parks. The cooler winter and spring months are ideal for exploring all that the interior has to offer. One such destination is Banyeres de Mariola in the glorious Sierra de Mariola Natural Park, which is about 55 kilometres inland from Alicante.

If you happen to visit on a clear day, you can see up to four provinces - Alicante, Valencia, Murcia and Albacete - from its castle.

As well as being a beauty spot, Banyeres de Mariola also has a rich industrial heritage, from textiles to making espadrilles, which you can discover in its museums. One way to find out more about its history, natural beauty and industrial past, is by walking along the route of the mills of Banyeres de Mariola along the Vinalopó River. Here you will see a variety of mills, from flour mills to paper mills. For over 200 years, there were nine paper mills in operation. Today, just three remain - Molí de l'Ombria, Molí Sol and Molí Pont - which are connected to each other by paths. It is an easy walk alongside the river and the route is dotted with information boards where you can discover more about the natural landscape, including the local plants which were used to make dyes. Whilst in the town, you can try its local dishes such as olleta or puchero, two rich stews packed with meat, vegetables and beans; desserts packed with local almonds; and a glass of l’Herbero, an anise-flavoured liqueur with medicinal herbs from the Sierra de Mariola.

Torrevieja exports tons of salt to de-ice roads

Torrevieja is gearing up to export 250,000 tons of salt to northern European countries to combat ice on their roads. Cargo ships dock in the southern Costa Blanca resort from November to January to load up with sea salt, known for its ability to stay on the road surface without melting.

The leaseholder, NCAST, signed an agreement to guarantee salt production until at least 2039. At the same time, it agreed to invest in environmental improvements and promote tourism related to the salt industry.

As you drive into Torrevieja from Alicante, you will see the huge piles of salt by the side of the lagoons, waiting to be sent to their final destination. Many visitors are also intrigued to see that one of the two lakes is a vivid pink colour, similar to the Dead Sea and the Great Salt Lake. This is caused by pigments of bacteria which live in very salty conditions as well as algae which turns the lake bright red at certain times of the year. You can wander around the lakes but an interesting alternative is to hop on the tourist train for a journey to the lakes to find out about the salt produced there as well as the flora and fauna found in this beautiful wetland. The train leaves from the Paseo de la Libertad in the centre of Torrevieja.

Spangles is abuzz with excitement!

At the beginning of November, they will be joining other choirs/ choruses for the “Musica Orbis Gloria Festival” in Prague. Preparations are well under way, but everyone knows temperatures will be low in November, proving very cold for those from warmer climes! However, Spangles have covered that by equipping themselves with new capes to keep them all warm for the trip.

We say “equipping themselves” but they wouldn’t have been able to do that without some great help from their supporters. Spangles is so very grateful to the local businesses who have sponsored the capes to help them on their way. This includes Mayz Dental Practice, the Gurkha Durbar Nepali Restaurant and The Salon, as well as two partners of chorus members, Herman and David, who have also donated.

Donations which will keep them snug and warm during their first time visiting this beautiful city as a group. Spangles really look forward to singing in some fabulous venues, including the famous St Vitus Cathedral, joined by choirs from around the world. You can keep up-to-date with their journey on their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/SpanglesChorus Spangles is a ladies’ a cappella chorus, singing in four part harmony. They rehearse every Thursday, from 10.30 am to 1.00 pm at Centro Municipal Las Claras, Calle Helena, Los Narejos, Los Alcázares and visitors are always welcome. If you’d like to book the chorus for an event or you are thinking about joining them, you can find out more on their website: www.spangleschorus.com or email info@spangleschorus.com Photographer: Øyvind Dammen

5 FACTS ABOUT ENCLOSING PATIOS OR TERRACES YOU DIDN'T EXPECT IN SPAIN

As the weather is getting cooler you may be thinking of enclosing your terrace or patio area, read on before you start.

Patios and semi-open porches are very popular in Spain and are traditional Mediterranean architecture as they introduce cold breezes into the property and provide shaded areas. The traditional living style is based on intense use of the outer spaces due to the excellent weather, which explains why our properties tend to be small compared to other Northern countries, where instead of patios, porches, conservatories and sun terraces are predominant. Under this mindset, it is frequent for international property owners in Spain to enclose patios, semi-opened porches, terraces, pergolas etc, without a proper major licence. Often there is no problem until it’s time to sell. At this point, lawyers freeze the sale, and either the extension needs to be demolished or legalised, or the purchasers pull out, alarmed by the illegal extensions.

Yes, in the Spanish system, these light enclosures require a major licence, and reasons are:

- It increases the size of the property: covering a patio or glazing a terrace adds new metreage, even if done within the footprint, transforming exterior space or semi-exterior to interior space.

- It increases the number of rooms of the premises: Number of rooms and new uses are incorporated into the property.

- It affects the description of the escrituras (title deeds): This means that the escritura and the rest of the property’s legal paperwork become discrepant to the reality, raising legal issues.

- It affects habitable conditions, ventilation and light: According to Spanish rules, almost all rooms must be ventilated and have direct access to natural light. Enclosures commonly cut off the unlimited natural light and ventilation, making the affected premises illegal.

In any given extension, its material is disregarded by Spanish authorities, which will only focus on the added volume: The fact that these enclosures are done with a simple glazing or light materials such as aluminium or plastic is disregarded by Spanish authorities that only care about the size increase and the impact to habitation regulations.

What are the consequences of having these enclosures carried out without a proper licence?

Done without a proper licence they will be subject to a fine and demolition/legalisation order if detected by the Spanish authorities. The cost of the fines will vary between town halls, size of the extension etc, but can easily be over 300€ per sqm. (eg a fine for a 10sqm shed can easily reach 3,000€). It also affects the selling process.

For the above reason and if not detected by the authorities, they will devalue the price of the property if it is being marketed or will become a bump in the marketing process.

....continued on next page &

How to fix it if you have installed these kinds of installations?

By obtaining a retrospective licence from any qualified Spanish Architect, the unlicensed extension can't be objected to by any authority, regardless of any future law changes.

The Conditions to Obtain a Retrospective Licence are:

• In Murcia, to obtain a Retrospective Licence, extensions must be at least 4 years old.

• In Almeria, the building work needs to be over 6 years old.

• In Alicante, the building work needs to have been completed before August 2010.

No Retrospective Licences can be issued for extensions that have already received a fine or demolition order.

Currently the process for obtaining a Retrospective Licence is straightforward. Once confirmed, Martinez de la Casa Architects will arrange an appointment to survey the pool/extension requiring only your NIE and current Title-Deeds. Afterwards, the Retrospective Licence is stamped by the Official College of Architects or Notarised and delivered within 10 working days (guaranteed).

The price of a Pool Retrospective Licence (Certificate of Antiquity) is 229€ IVA incl. and for Extensions such as glazings, coverages, sheds, workshops or any other extensions is 326€ IVA incl. (All extensions in the property included).

Martinez de la Casa Architects is the Number One company for Building Certification, including Energy Performance Certificates (121€ IVA incl) and Habitation/Occupation Licences and Retrospective Licences.

A New Era at The Colina Club

Nestled in an exclusive urbanisation on the lower slopes of the tranquil hills surrounding Calpe on the Costa Blanca area of Spain. The Colina Club was the first purpose built Continuous Care Complex on the Costa Blanca and for over 33 years has been providing excellent continuous care to expats.

The Colina Club offers 48 one and two bedroom independent living apartments. The apartments are long-term unfurnished rentals for those who are looking for a caring, quiet, family-orientated, small village atmosphere in which to live. The apartments were specifically designed so that both the ground-floor and first-floor apartments have level access (just one small step) from the parking area directly outside. The apartments are more than just living spaces, they are designed to make you feel at home. Equipped with a fully functional kitchen, living area, cosy bedrooms, and a sun terrace, these apartments guarantee privacy and independence.

Due to new regulations, the only way the nursing and rest home can continue to comply with the legal requirements and continue its license, is with a major expansion to the building. This option is not feasible and as such the directors have made the hard and sad decision to close the nursing and rest home and to focus on continuing to provide excellent care to the residents in the independent living apartments.

The Colina Club stands out with its emphasis on safety and community. The village features an alarm system for urgent medical assistance and regular check-ins for single residents to prevent isolation. In addition, weekly rejuvenating chair exercise sessions and social activities promote a sense of community and belonging. A free minibus service goes daily into Calpe. The staff and residents genuinely care for each other, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere that sets the Colina Club apart.

The Colina Club’s apartments are available for long-term rental, only one month’s rent as your security deposit and the first month’s rent is all you need to move into your new home.

Why not give us a call; arrange a tour; where we can answer any questions and explain the benefits of living at the Colina Club. There’s no obligation, and of course, and certainly no pressure. Together we may figure out the perfect situation for your next stage of life.

Kenny Corris brings you

Aries: The New Moon in the eighth house of Scorpio stirs passions whilst Saturn infuses harmony and grounds you. This is an inspirational time and a time to transform energies once and for all.

Taurus: Assertive and aggressive Mars enters into the fourth house of Leo early on in the month. Time to take a risk on something you have to really believe in to make it work for you and those who you love.

Gemini: Sagittarius is in opposition to your sign this month. Fiery actions in your seventh house bode well for contracts; where nothing ventured truly is nothing gained, and your enthusiasm is boundless.

Cancer: Venus is in Capricorn in direct conflict with Cancer. Love and desire pave the way favourably for partnerships whereby new ones are probable; and existing ones get a new kick start, and not before time!

Leo: Expansive energies are brought about in the fifth house as a reunion is on the horizon. You’ve taken on the work and the rest OK, but this month social events connect you with the fun and good times that you deserve.

Virgo: Leading up to the Mercury retrograde this month, The Sun enters the fourth house of Sagittarius bringing attention to the hearth and home and all aspects of domesticity. Family issues step up and resolve.

OUR OROSCOPE

Libra: The Full Moon in 24 degrees of Taurus brings security into a joint venture whereby negotiations are imminent. It shines a light on finances that are sorted by the fast response of Uranus at 25 degrees.

Scorpio: With the New Moon kicking off the month you are building foundations and starting a new and very positive new chapter with the prospects of new opportunities. Someone finally tells you the real truth!

Sagittarius: Venus is in Capricorn until December 6th. Spotlight is on your personal finances: so check spending because you need to boost your income. A temporary position opens for you as a lucrative sideline.

Capricorn: Taurus aligns with 1 degree of Uranus, planet of the new, the innovative and the totally unexpected. Expect sudden surprises and maybe a windfall too since finances seem favourable at last.

Aquarius: The Mercury retrograde brings delays in travel plans and unexpected events cause problems with your cash flow this month. Expect a breakthrough and clarity, however, on matters that are nearing a head!

Pisces: Beware what is really behind a recent request. The tenth house of career is in fall out from the Mercury Retrograde. Your creative energies are sought after, but is something too good to be true? Be careful!
