Ask the Optician - Eyes on Diabetes
Understanding diabetes and its side effects is the first step towards preventing it, managing it and reducing the risk of complications. According to the International Diabetes Foundation (IDF), around 1 in 3 people with diabetes develop some form of eye health complication, so we’ve asked Isabel Fenollar from Specsavers Ópticas in Jávea to answer some of your questions on this important topic.
How many people have diabetes?
Unfortunately, diabetes is one of the fastest growing health conditions today – fuelled by record levels of obesity, excessive sugar consumption and sedentary lifestyles. Spain has the second highest diabetes prevalence in Europe and 14.8% of adults in Spain are living with diabetes - that’s over 5 million people. What are the complications of diabetes?
People living with diabetes have an increased risk of developing diabetes complications which can affect the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys, nerves, teeth and gums. According to the IDF, 1 in 3 people with diabetes will develop some form of vision loss during their lifetime. Kidney failure is 10 times more common in people with diabetes and a lower limb is lost to diabetes somewhere in the world every 30 seconds.
How can diabetes effect eye sight?
Diabetes can affect the small blood vessels and capillaries of the body if it is not properly controlled. Diabetic changes can occur in the blood vessels at the back of the eye, causing diabetic retinopathy.
Diabetic retinopathy is one of the leading causes of preventable blindness in working age adults, so it’s hugely important that diabetes is detected early and monitored correctly to minimise the risk of avoidable sight loss. Diabetes can also have other ocular pathological effects, including cataracts and retinal detachments. Severe changes, if left untreated, can result in blindness. What can we do to prevent damage to the eye from diabetes?
In order to avoid problems with sight, it is important that blood sugar levels, blood pressure and cholesterol levels are controlled. Not all diabetes causes sight loss, but it is important to have regular screenings and eye tests so that any problems or changes can be monitored.

Well we all survived the partying although I cannot believe I have a granddaughter who is in double figures - how did that happen? - where does the time go?
One of her presents was a ukulele as she is going to start learning it at school. As she wanted a blue one she asked for it for a birthday present, which I thought was very thoughtful of her rather than just expecting to get one anyway. I hope it will be more pleasing to listen to than the recorder which she is learning at the moment.
The 'Moors and Christians' was amazing, in fact it was one of the best I have seen in my 36 years here. Of course I am biased and clapped extra hard for the grandchildren (and daughter and son-inlaw) who were living their best lives and looked fantastic parading through the town. Next year is an important one in their fila as they have the Alférez so it will mean a float and dancers and better costumes - I can't wait. They keep asking me to take part instead of just doing background stuff - I may be tempted.....
The house swap worked really well and by the looks of the videos our dog enjoyed her holidays away from the fireworks and with other dogs to play with, although it's a bit like have a clingy toddler since getting her back.
There are so many fairs and concerts and other events during the lead up to Christmas that you will need to have your diary on hand to make a note so as not to miss anything.
The 28th issue of the Professional Services Marina Alta edition is out on the streets so don't forget to pick up your copy and keep it to hand as you never know when you will need one of the professional services offered.
Until next time, take care and be kind. Lesley

Financial Advice from our family to yours
The role of a Financial Planner
Most people will have heard of “Financial Planner” as a job role, but what do we do?
How can we help you?
The main purpose of a Financial Planner is to help clients reach their financial goals and objectives, but how we do this will depend on the individual, couple or family in question. This is because goals and objectives are subjective and can vary significantly from person to person. There is no “one size fits all”.
We meet clients who find themselves at all different stages of life; ranging from those working with young families, to others who have already retired. For some, ensuring that sufficient regular savings are being made for the future is the main goal, whilst for others capital preservation and risk management of existing assets is the priority.
Successful planning can only be implemented once advisers have a full understanding of a client's circumstances and what they are looking to achieve. In depth discussions with a financial planner can help individuals or couples identify shortfalls or areas of concern not previously thought of. Strategies can then be put in place to cover short-term requirements, longer term needs, or a combination of both.
Common short-term demands would include things like paying for children's education fees, repaying loans or creating an adequate “emergency fund”. Longer-term objectives could include portfolio servicing and potentially estate planning. Servicing of investments requires risk management; something which is often overlooked but can have a big impact in terms of performance over time.
Summarising the above, a financial planner takes a holistic approach to financial management and can formulate plans with the help of longevity forecasts or cashflow modelling. These additional tools can often prove to be extremely useful for clients, who can see their finances via a combination of figures and graphics, in addition to any verbal confirmations.
If finances are a concern for you, or you'd like to chat through any doubts you may have, why not get in contact with our family-run business to see if we can help?

Erectile Dysfunction
Erectile Dysfunction (ED) is when there is a persistent inability of getting and keeping an erection firm enough for sex, but men should not suffer in silence as treatment is available. But let’s be clear it is not just the men that suffer when suffering with Erectile Dysfunction but their partners also. Surprisingly it is estimated that half of all men over the age of 40, will have at some degree suffered, causing problems in the personal relationships, and triggering low self-esteem and confidence.
Now available is a non-invasive Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT), this is a clinically proven method and has been used for treating various medical conditions in the past. Treatment consists of low-intensity sound waves passing through the erectile tissue, helping to restore the natural erectile function by clearing plaque out of blood vessels and encouraging the growth of new blood vessels. The shockwave treatment offers a cure in that it reverses the problems that cause the dysfunction in the first place — the most desired win-win outcome coveted by men with ED.
Making healthy lifestyle choices like taking regular exercise, drinking less alcohol, and stopping smoking can help with ED. Don’t suffer in silence and put unnecessary strain on your relationship, contact us at Clinica Britannia for more information.

Advice for buying a Second-hand Car in Spain
Before buying a second-hand car in Spain, it is crucial to carry out a few checks to ensure that the vehicle is in good condition and that you are making a safe purchase. We share our advice for your purchase to help you ensure that it is roadworthy and there are no unforeseen problems in the process.
The Car's history
• It is advisable to request a report from the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) to find out about the car’s history, including charges, accidents and the number of previous owners.
• If you don’t have mechanical knowledge, it would be a good idea to take the car to a trusted garage for a complete inspection. This can help you detect possible hidden problems that may not be visible at first sight.
• Besides this, you should verify that the documentation is in order, the indicated mileage is consistent with the age and use of the vehicle. Mileage fraud is one of the most common issues when it comes to buying second hand cars.
Purchase Options
Next, regarding where to buy your second-hand car, there are a few options to consider. Buying the vehicle directly from an individual is usually cheaper, but it could carry greater risks (that you can partially avoid by following the above steps). It is important to put in place a private purchase contract with the seller that includes all the details of the car purchase.
A second option is buying from a dealer or a dealership (concesionario) which offers you greater security, since they usually provide guarantees, prior inspections of the vehicle and they are required to grant you a minimum 1-year warranty.
The last of the options would be the internet portals such as Wallapop, Facebook Marketplace, Milanuncios or Coches.net.
Once again, it is advisable to verify the reliability of the seller and follow the same steps set out above when purchasing from an individual.
Fees and Taxes
When purchasing a second-hand car in Spain, you will pay the Impuesto de Transmisiones Patrimoniales (ITP / Property Transfer Tax) and the ownership change fee. The ITP varies depending on the region, but it is usually between 4% and 8% of the vehicle's value and is paid to the Tax office in your region. Additionally, you will pay a change of ownership fee at the DGT when transferring vehicle ownership. This fee typically costs around 55 euros, though it may vary.
What happens if you have problems with the car?
If you bought the car from a dealer or sales company, you are entitled to a minimum one-year warranty. During this period, the seller must repair any defects that are not due to misuse or poor maintenance of the car.
If you bought your vehicle from a private individual, the seller is also obliged to respond to hidden defects in the car for the first six months after the purchase.
These defects must have existed at the time of purchase but were not visible or known by the buyer.

A New Era at The Colina Club
Nestled in an exclusive urbanisation on the lower slopes of the tranquil hills surrounding Calpe on the Costa Blanca area of Spain. The Colina Club was the first purpose built Continuous Care Complex on the Costa Blanca and for over 33 years has been providing excellent continuous care to expats.
The Colina Club offers 48 one and two bedroom independent living apartments. The apartments are long-term unfurnished rentals for those who are looking for a caring, quiet, family-orientated, small village atmosphere in which to live. The apartments were specifically designed so that both the ground-floor and first-floor apartments have level access (just one small step) from the parking area directly outside. The apartments are more than just living spaces, they are designed to make you feel at home. Equipped with a fully functional kitchen, living area, cosy bedrooms, and a sun terrace, these apartments guarantee privacy and independence.
Due to new regulations, the only way the nursing and rest home can continue to comply with the legal requirements and continue its license, is with a major expansion to the building. This option is not feasible and as such the directors have made the hard and sad decision to close the nursing and rest home and to focus on continuing to provide excellent care to the residents in the independent living apartments.
The Colina Club stands out with its emphasis on safety and community. The village features an alarm system for urgent medical assistance and regular check-ins for single residents to prevent isolation. In addition, weekly rejuvenating chair exercise sessions and social activities promote a sense of community and belonging. A free minibus service goes daily into Calpe. The staff and residents genuinely care for each other, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere that sets the Colina Club apart.
The Colina Club’s apartments are available for long-term rental, only one month’s rent as your security deposit and the first month’s rent is all you need to move into your new home. Why not give us a call; arrange a tour; where we can answer any questions and explain the benefits of living at the Colina Club. There’s no obligation, and of course, and certainly no pressure. Together we may figure out the perfect situation for your next stage of life.

Non Invasive Facelift with Botox and Fillers
Botox is the first go to treatment for taking years off the face giving a refreshed open eyed appearance.
The areas of the face most commonly treated with Botox are: The forehead - Frown lines - Crow's feet
But many people do not realise that Botox can treat a number of other areas in the face. Having Botox in the top part of the face and not in the lower part can be a give away ‘Botox face’ but if the bottom half of the face is treated as well the whole overall appearance of the person becomes lifted and completely rejuvenated.
Only the most experienced doctor however who knows his or her anatomy to perfection must be chosen to carry out these procedures otherwise disastrous results could occur!
Advanced Botox injection procedures include: Droopy jowlsGummy smile - Dimpled chin - Smokers lines - Sad mouthsTurkey neck.
Filler and Botox go hand in hand....
Filler can be used to replace volume lost around a sad mouth, to treat lip lines, to restore an uneven jawline or simply to fill in neck lines and cheek lines.
Filler will recondition the skin but Botox will relax the muscles so that the filler stays in place longer. The amount of filler and the thickness of filler used will depend on the person's skin, the area treated and the results wanting to be achieved.
The quality of the filler is of upmost importance to prevent any allergic reactions and granulomas (cysts), to achieve a homogenous result and to increase the longevity of the product.

The ACID in your drink…..
In terms of what we eat or put in our mouths, there is only 1 thing that actually harms teeth and that is acid. This can be acidic foods and drinks or sugar indirectly which converts into acid by the bacteria that multiply in our mouth - since bacteria feed on sugar, water and air which is abundant in the mouth.
What people don’t realise is that, of course, the more bacteria there is, the more damage, hence good oral hygiene is necessary to keep the bacteria levels to a minimum. Also, we know that the build up of bacterial plaque disturbs the gums due to bacterial infection around the necks of the teeth, which is mainly where bacterial plaque tends builds up if it is not cleaned away.
Why does acid harm teeth?
Because teeth are composed of calcium phosphate salts, they easily dissolve in acids, both strong and weak – more in a strong acid like lemon. That means when there is an acidic environment in the mouth then the surface enamel softens even though it is a very strong hard substance. The only thing that can re-harden this soft enamel is the calcium in our saliva -the same calcium that forms tarter (calcified plaque) on the teeth. Over time this can re-harden and mend the enamel again if we allow plenty time to do so (several hours).
If the enamel is soft and we brush our teeth to clean them then we effectively multiply this acid damage by a factor of 10,000 times every time we do it. Hence the rapid rise of thin enamel and consequent problems of sensitive teeth, chipped worn edges and shrunken teeth.
A dangerous habit is consuming an increasing quantity of fizzy drinks, juices, energy sport drinks etc, all of which are very acidic, and these cause thinning of the enamel and tooth decay - even the sugar free ones.
Another danger is the health habit of lemon water first thing –responsible for dramatic tooth enamel erosion and sensitivity. If you must do this then clean the teeth first and use a straw to keep it off the teeth.
The answer to this is brush BEFORE breakfast or any type of juices or fruits and last thing at night (provided you haven’t recently consumed anything like fruit or acidic drinks etc – if so don’t bother). Many people brush after breakfast which makes no sense at all. Brushing after meals is also a mistake and has no benefit (rinsing is OK but the best idea is let the natural saliva do the cleansing as it was always meant to do).
Clinica Dental la Plaza is the answer.
Following this advice can help you preserve your precious tooth enamel, and that of your children and prevent the consequent problems of acids in food and drink.

How to choose the perfect wedding hair style
Now this is a big decision for all brides, but some are very relaxed and leave it to the professionals, such as myself.
Diva brides? No such thing!
Brides are nervous in lots of different ways and for lots of different reasons. Some know exactly what they want and are on the ready with an Instagram picture, or Pinterest or something just off the web. Whereas others have several pictures some are up styles and some down. This year I have found the Boho look to be the most popular such as a messy bun, with loose curls tasselling out from the bun structure and loose fine curls surrounding the contour of the face and COVERING TOPS OF EARS, which is a must for most brides. Or the loose tasselled beach curls with sides twisted or plaited back off their face. But, interesting enough the all-time favourite has to be the Hollywood waves which first rose to fame in the 1920s created by the Marcel finger wave technique or Barrel curl. Now in today’s world the Hollywood waves are mainly created on electrical hot irons, rags and other styling tools.
Finishing with a stylish Flapper look at the front of the hair with 2 of your favourite long glitzy clips, placed into 1 or 2 of the waves or simply placed high on one side of the hair.
FINDING THE PERFECT WEDDING HAIRDRESSERS.
Choosing the perfect wedding hairstyle is best found by finding The Perfect Wedding Hairdresser. Social media is your first port of call. Check out Instagram, Facebook, websites etc. But be sure to see the hairdresser’s work from previous weddings, avoid wedding hairdressers that are only able to display their work on a dummy head. Check for lots of different styles and techniques, it might be that they’re limited to only offering a couple of styles. Word of mouth, or via positive reviews is always the best way to choose the perfect professional. Then follow it up with a wedding trial. That way you get to meet your professional and can gain confidence in their work as well as getting to know them on a personal side, as the preparations on your wedding day are very personal to you and your wedding hairdresser will be a part of that.

Privacy? Cleanliness?
We recently finished a project for a client who had an apartment. It was a ground floor apartment with a reasonable garden space which was originally designed to have natural grass.
Now as much as I have worked with our grass product for a long time now, there is always something new to learn about the pros to having artificial grass. It wasn’t until we had finished the project and we were talking with our client, (who was very happy with the grass), that she told us a story about how she nearly didn’t buy the apartment. The reason they didn’t nearly buy the apartment was there was no exterior access to the garden (this is what I hadn’t even thought about). So, if they intended to keep the natural grass, that would mean that the gardener would have to not only have access to their home, but have to drag their dirty tools through it every single week to cut the grass.
What an obviously ridiculous design feature by the developer. Normally as a designer I pickup on this sort of thing very quickly, but because of the nature of this project I was distracted (it became quite difficult as some problem neighbours made life a little awkward for a while as they thought we were building a new terrace, once they realised we weren’t then everything was OK).

Luckily for us the sales agent who sold our client the house said "what about artificial grass?" And that was the clincher. It’s a lovely apartment with great access to everything but the lack of exterior access to the garden nearly cost the sale. Why on earth would anyone want their gardener to have full access to their home and bring through dirty equipment is beyond me, so this is a message to all those looking at ground floor apartments, developers who may be building them or people who just want a little more privacy because they don’t want the gardener disturbing them or their tenants. Artificial Grass Spain allows that to happen with an instant fix to your not so great lawn, that lasts for years and looks great the whole time. Don’t just keep the problem, change it immediately and save money and stress from day one. Call Artificial Grass Spain to help.

Christmas ‘Thank You’ Events
Several local charities are working with the Entertainers to provide events during the lead up to Christmas, to thank everybody for their support during the year, without which these charities would not be able to continue their great work within our community.
The Entertainers are just one of several groups and entertainers who give of their time in order to support these charities to raise funds. They are particularly proud to have been able to provide this support and they are well on their way to have helped raise more than €25,000 again this year.
The Entertainers pre-Christmas calendar is starting to fill with dates for these ‘Thank You’ events and their provisional programme, at the time of writing, has the following events booked:
7th December at the Gandia Men’s Hostel in support of Jalon Valley Help.
16th December in Pego in support of APROP, the local animal charity.
20th December outside the Animo centre in Alcalali in support of JVH.
As Jo, Entertainers’ leader, says – ‘keep your eyes and ears open to social media and newspapers, as several further bookings are still in the planning stage’. Please do come along to these fun events within your own community and join in with thanks to the charities for their invaluable support in our community.
Art exhibition at Ciudad Patricia
On November 22, 23, and 24, Ciudad Patricia will host an art exhibition for the first time. The idea has been in the works for quite some time, but renovations to the main building previously delayed it. Now, the time is finally right. We've known for a while that many residents have hidden talents, and now it's time to share them with you. No fewer than 18 residents will showcase their art, and most of it will be available for purchase.
You can expect a variety of art forms, including oil, acrylic, and watercolour paintings, ceramics, sculptures, crocheted baby clothes, embroidered tapestries, and handmade cards.
All of this can be seen during the opening on Friday, November 22, from 11am to 2pm. During the opening, all the artists will be present, and we will welcome you with a nice drink. In addition, you can visit the exhibition on Saturday, November 23, and Sunday, November 24, from 11am to 4pm. The exhibition will take place in the lounge of the main building (Edificio central) at Calle Rumania 26, Benidorm. There is plenty of free parking available.
During the exhibition, our bar will also be open for drinks and small snacks, and between 1pm and 3pm, the restaurant will offer a delicious menu del día.
Pictured are a small preview of the works you can expect. We look forward to seeing you there.
Why Socialising is Key for Business Networking Groups
Socialising plays a crucial role in the success of business networking groups. It fosters strong relationships, which are the foundation of effective networking. When people engage socially, they build trust, rapport, and mutual understanding—critical elements for forming long-lasting business connections. In a networking group, social interactions allow members to learn more about each other beyond job titles and roles. By engaging in casual conversations, individuals can uncover shared interests, values, or even challenges. This creates a sense of camaraderie, making future business collaborations more likely and enjoyable. When members feel comfortable with one another, they are more inclined to share valuable resources, referrals, and opportunities, benefiting the entire group. Join the CBBA
The Costa Blanca Business Association has been the area’s leading business networking and referrals group, and socialising forms a key part of their success in exchanging business referrals. In October, members along with their families went for a tour of Alicante Castle followed by a tour of the local neighbourhood and ultimately on for a wonderful meal in Monumental – a lovely Art Deco inspired restaurant in Alicante. If you value business networking in a group that values the development of long-term relationships, then you should consider joining this vibrant and successful group. They meet every fortnight with members working hard to find business for each other. Visit www.cbba.es to find out more.
Three inland towns beloved by tourists
Whilst it is well-known that many Costa Blanca resorts double or treble their population in the summer, some inland towns also experience a great swell in numbers, thanks to tourism. The three inland towns of the Marina Alta with the most foreign tourists this year are Alcalali, Orba and Jalon.
In the first six months of the year, the Marina Alta region received 23.8% more visitors than in the same period in 2023, with 1,519,748 tourists, according to the National Institute of Statistics figures. Of these 517,397 were foreign visitors, an increase of 17.8% on the same period in the previous year.
Alcalali, with its population of 1,392, had 5,686 international visitors, followed by the pottery town of Orba with 5,233 foreign tourists, despite having 2.428 residents, and Jalon, with 3.195 visitors from overseas (3.024 inhabitants).
Other towns which also saw more foreign visitors than it has inhabitants were Llíber, with 3,907 foreign tourists and a population of 1,021 people, and Castell de Castells, which has a tiny population of 441, but attracted 2,563 tourists.
Jalon is always a favourite with visitors because of its charming town centre, beautiful trees in blossom in springtime, and its wines, particularly those from Bodegas Xaló. Alcalali is also a great place to discover more about the Jalón Valley's wines and olive industry within its Museo Etnológico.

International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
November has within it a special week for women.
The week
around 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, is dedicated to raising awareness of gender violence (also called domestic violence) and to the women and the bereaved children. In Spain this week is known as 25N. Already in Spain 35 women have been murdered this year by someone close to them - husband, partner, ex boyfriend.
The European Union of Women Marina Alta is cooperating with local councils in order to bring to the notice of all women, especially those not speaking Spanish, the help which is available to them and the ways in which they might avoid abuse.
By meetings and demonstrations, by workshops and screening of films we can also say to the men and boys in our communities 'Stop! That's enough!', we all have a responsibility to respect our women and stop these murders.
Look out for the agendas, search on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/ groups/euwma and other social media. Join us!

Walk Your Way Well
with Niamh O'Sheehan
Walking: The Unsung Hero of Emotional Health
Hi! It's me again talking about walking. Why? Because you deserve to feel great. So, let's Walk Your Way Well!
Let’s face it: life can feel like an obstacle course designed by a particularly cruel game show host. Work stress, family drama, health issues, complicated friend situations can all weigh heavily on our minds. Enter walking—the magical cure for our emotional woes that’s as easy as putting one foot in front of the other. Don't diss it. It really helps.
Walking isn’t just for fitness fanatics or people who own dogs. It’s a delightful act that allows you to step away from your problems. Picture this: you’re trudging along, contemplating another existential crisis or what to cook for dinner. Each step releases a sprinkle of endorphins, transforming your frown and worries into a smile and solutions.
Plus, walking can be your personal therapist. Just think about it: you can talk to yourself without judgment! You can clear your head. Contemplate. Find resolutions. Walking encourages creative thinking. And, relieves stress, fact!
And don’t underestimate the power of nature! A stroll through a forest might even inspire you to write that novel you keep promising yourself. Or at least provide you with time and space to come up with new dreams and goals, and how to accomplish them.
So, next time you’re feeling overwhelmed, grab those shoes and hit the hills. Remember, walking isn’t just good for your physical health; it’s a step (pun intended) toward emotional enlightenment. And who knows? You might just find that the journey is more fun than the destination.
Please join me and my walking community for a group walk and talk. We are a friendly bunch and we walk for emotional, physical and mental wellbeing. WhatsApp +34 676 507 791 for more info.

Kenny Corris brings you
Aries: The New Moon in the eighth house of Scorpio stirs passions whilst Saturn infuses harmony and grounds you. This is an inspirational time and a time to transform energies once and for all.
Taurus: Assertive and aggressive Mars enters into the fourth house of Leo early on in the month. Time to take a risk on something you have to really believe in to make it work for you and those who you love.
Gemini: Sagittarius is in opposition to your sign this month. Fiery actions in your seventh house bode well for contracts; where nothing ventured truly is nothing gained, and your enthusiasm is boundless.
Cancer: Venus is in Capricorn in direct conflict with Cancer. Love and desire pave the way favourably for partnerships whereby new ones are probable; and existing ones get a new kick start, and not before time!
Leo: Expansive energies are brought about in the fifth house as a reunion is on the horizon. You’ve taken on the work and the rest OK, but this month social events connect you with the fun and good times that you deserve.
Virgo: Leading up to the Mercury retrograde this month, The Sun enters the fourth house of Sagittarius bringing attention to the hearth and home and all aspects of domesticity. Family issues step up and resolve.
OUR OROSCOPE
Libra: The Full Moon in 24 degrees of Taurus brings security into a joint venture whereby negotiations are imminent. It shines a light on finances that are sorted by the fast response of Uranus at 25 degrees.
Scorpio: With the New Moon kicking off the month you are building foundations and starting a new and very positive new chapter with the prospects of new opportunities. Someone finally tells you the real truth!
Sagittarius: Venus is in Capricorn until December 6th. Spotlight is on your personal finances: so check spending because you need to boost your income. A temporary position opens for you as a lucrative sideline.
Capricorn: Taurus aligns with 1 degree of Uranus, planet of the new, the innovative and the totally unexpected. Expect sudden surprises and maybe a windfall too since finances seem favourable at last.
Aquarius: The Mercury retrograde brings delays in travel plans and unexpected events cause problems with your cash flow this month. Expect a breakthrough and clarity, however, on matters that are nearing a head!
Pisces: Beware what is really behind a recent request. The tenth house of career is in fall out from the Mercury Retrograde. Your creative energies are sought after, but is something too good to be true? Be careful!
