Fashion GuiDe lately, i have become obsessed with florals. i never considered my style to be extra girly, but with so many cool floral prints and styles out there, I haven’t been able to resist! From printed pants to a colorful jumpsuit, flower power is in full bloom. What i love about wearing floral patterns is that they create diversity in my wardrobe. they can be subtle and simple or full of crazy colors. this summer, i’ve worn a bit of both. the yellow and beige wrap dress is a perfect way to add a fresh yet simple flower print to your ootd. this has become my go-to dress for any summer event because it’s both fun and feminine. to complete the look, style it with a straw hat, mirrored sunglasses and a pair of heels that accentuate the colors in the dress. if that dress is too understated for your taste, try something a little bolder like this navy, pink and orange jumpsuit. Jumpsuits are extremely trendy right now. they’re fun and easy to wear, so i’d definitely recommend adding one to your wardrobe. look for one with a chic floral print on it, and you’ll be ready to go. Add some simple pumps that won’t distract from the suit for a nice balance. Just because florals are in, that doesn’t mean you have to wear them from head to toe like the dress or jumpsuit. You can add a cool pair of floral pants like the one’s i’m wearing for just a pop, or do the opposite and wear a beautiful silk dual-print blouse. Anyway you do it, adding fun prints is always a great way to express your style and personality. So, before summer comes to an end, have fun and play around with all types of floral prints, patterns, and styles!

Business: jischke Gymnastics aGe: 29

You can start your path to the Olympics at 8510 Las Cruces Dr. Suite 5. Hours of operation: Monday-Friday: 3:30pm-8:30pm Saturday: 9:30am2pm

As a young boy Paul Jischke was a bundle of energy. He was the type of kid who would much rather be running around with friends, jumping up and down, climbing on trees, than plopped in front of the TV. It is no surprise that when his parents enrolled him in gymnastics, he took to it like a fish to water. Paul has kept his gymnastics fire burning by teaching his prowess on the mats to his protégées, since the opening of the Jischke Gymnastics and Fitness Center in September 2010. At Jischke Gymnastics you can expect that same energy and attention by Paul and his staff, who have designed a system that makes it possible for anyone to learn the skills it takes to be a full-fledged gymnast. Mr. Jischke attended TAMIU

and has called Laredo home for more than half his life. Although he had always been a gymnastics enthusiast, opening a gymnastics center was never a part of his plans. But, when the opportunity to open up a gymnastics center arose, everything just started falling into place. Paul has now been coaching for more than a few years, and would have a hard time imagining himself doing anything else. He is continuously inspired to keep his business thriving and is driven by the support of his parents, who were always there to keep pushing him, even when he didn’t want to push himself. This all-encompassing support is something that he has transferred to his athletes and admits that, “One of the greatest feelings is when

I get to see my gymnasts flying through the air and sticking their landings.” He hopes it will all pay off when he can see one of them compete in the Olympics. The Jischke Gymnastics and Fitness Center is currently offering two new fun and exciting programs, Tot Time and Ninja Kids, as well as gymnastics and tumbling classes. These classes are safe programs for children to learn gymnastics. The mission at the Jischke Gymnastics and Fitness Center is to use the sport of gymnastics to help children gain greater self-confidence, a positive self-image, and learn to be proud of what they can accomplish through practice, effort and perseverance. All while making sure they have fun throughout the process.

10 years as EntrEprEnEurs

After 10 years in the candy business, Chocolateka is still a sweet place to work and shop. The family-owned business is celebrating its 10-year anniversary as the pioneers of selling chocolate and treats. RIO interviewed the Tena family about their business journey.

R: How long have you been in business? It’s our 10 year anniversary in the US but Chocolateka is originally from Monterrey, NL, México, and have been operating for several years as the pioneers of catering chocolate fountains and treats.

RIO: Tell us about yourselves: Cibeles, 31 Cibeles, 31:I am a full-time mother of a gorgeous baby girl, Cibeles Ferreira, and the most loving Yorkie whom I adopted, named Gallina! Soccer is my favorite sport and I wouldn’t rather be anywhere else than with my family. Luis, 27 I’m a sports enthusiast. I’m always looking to make people laugh.“Weird” would be a perfect word to describe me! Josefa, 29 I’m a mother to a beautiful 16 month old girl named Cirian Martinez, and a baby boy on the way. I always try to keep myself busy, which is something I inherited my mother and father. I’m a very creative person and enjoy doing arts and crafts.

R: How did you become entrepreneurs? Cibeles Being an entrepreneur is in my blood. Both of my parents have had very successful businesses. Chocolateka was my parents’ idea. They planted the seed and we’ve become involoved in the business overtime. Luis I have always been an entrepreneur, it was something I was born with. In elementary I sold the elegant pens. In middle school I sold Mexican candy. In high school I would take 2 duffle bags full of Mexican chips to sell. Teachers would give me 5 minutes before class to sell as much as I could so I wouldn’t be a distraction during lecture. Like I said I was born with it Josefa My dad has been an entrepreneur ever since he was young. So it’s defiantly something I’ve looked up to. I always wanted to own my own business, so when the idea of opening up Chocolateka came about each family member provided ideas and made it a reality. For more information visit their website www.chocolateka.com

R: What does Chocolateka offer? Chocolateka offers a variety of original treats and snacks, made with fresh, top-quality ingredients like Belgian chocolate and our homemade chamoy. Chocoberry cup, freshly chopped strawberries with Belgian melted chocolate, premium Dulce de leche froyo “preparado” with cajeta, banana, almonds, & pecans, Takis LOADED with chopped pickles, sour powers, chamoy, lime, & chile, and caramel & chocolate green apples are the crowd favorites, all prepared with the utmost care to satisfy our customers’ cravings! R: What are you most satisfied about? Cibeles Customer satisfaction is definitely what brings me the most joy Luis As funny as this may sound I’m most satisfied with bringing small bits of joy to the world. I see it happen every day. The excitement in a young child’s eyes when they see a chocolate fountain for the first time. The sense of relief someone gets from a Chocoberry Cup after a stressful day. I’m proud to be able to make people smile! Josefa The thing I’m most proud of is this journey. We have been blessed to have faithful customers. Since day one we have been satisfying and making customers happy with our awesome Belgian chocolate and homemade chamoy treats! R: Chocolateka will be celebrating 10 years in business…. We believe 10 years in the business is a big mile stone for our family, because we’ve so hard to turn this dream into a reality and we defiantly look forward to making customers happy for many many more years to come. Consistency and great customer service is our number #1 priority and it’s defiantly something that will make your business successful. Follow them on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter

restaurante.

Gamez: Al llegar a Estados Unidos, comencé

Bistro

Being an entrepreneur in the food industry is something that Maita Fernandez-Ponce has always had in mind, and while her first idea was to create a combination of a bakery, cafeteria, and café; that idea quickly evolved into what many Laredoans know as Lolitas Bistro. Before becoming the successful business owner that she is today, Maita studied and learned from a variety of different places: The Ritz Escoffier in Paris, where she learned the traditional and contemporary art of French pastries, El Instituto Culinario de Mexico in Monterrey, where she received her Bachelor’s in Culinary Arts, and The French Culinary Institute in Ney York City where she learned the trade of restaurant management. We see the results of her extensive background when taking a look at Lolitas menu, which consists of an array of international dishes with a Latin twist. However, that isn’t all we can expect, Lolitas offers a singular dining experience with fresh and high quality ingredients in every dish, in a warm and inviting ambience. Besides the food, Lolitas also features uniquely crafted cocktails made fresh to order. To succeed in business, Maita is constantly working hard, keeping a positive attitude in good and bad times, picking great team, and working even harder when things don’t go the way you want. This work ethic is what recently led Lolitas to win “Business of the Year.” However, the most satisfying part of business for Maita, is seeing Lolitas patrons leave happy and continue to return, as well as getting to know the people she works with and forming lasting professional relationships. Knowing that her business has created a great environment that people are happy to be a part of is truly rewarding. Maita credits Lolitas success to her Lolitas Bistro team and her husband, who co-owns and operates with her.

It is easy to get caught up with the advanced sciences that comprise the curriculum of a second year dental student, so poetry has become a creative outlet that keeps Anacristina grounded and connected to other people. Inspiration for her art comes from a variety of different places and things, from personal struggles to political events. The latest poem she wrote happened to go viral, and was inspired by a video she saw on her own Facebook newsfeed. The poem itself is about the beauty of being bilingual, how we shouldn’t let someone else’s hatred cover our vibrancy, and thee yimportance o Gonzalofez our LaVaud Emili ne on Yv , ez al nz ail A, Go voices in a time when it is crucial to use Aldo Ortegon,G it. However, there have been people who have approached Anacristina and told her how grateful they are for the poem, and for providing a voice for the people who have been told to be silent. When asked if she had one message to get across about performing slam poetry, Anacristina wanted others to know that your voice is unique, and that no matter how uncertain you may feel, there will be someone in the audience who needed to hear those exact words coming out of your particular mouth. At the end of the day, slam poetry exemplifies the beauty of word and what it can do for people—connect them. In August, Anacristina and her team traveled to Denver, CO to compete in the, National Poetry Slam, the largest national competition, where they placed 9th out of over 80 teams. It is the second year Write About Now has sent a team and Anacristina’s first time competing at a national level. If you want to watch some of Anacristina’s performances three of her poems are posted on the Write About Now Youtube Channel, with more to come!

In your biography, it says that you “conceive each work in writing, and the poetic text is displayed with the sculpture, as an integral part of the piece, not merely an explanation.” What did you write about Support? ‘I wanted to make a statement on climate change and the role people must play in supporting Venice’s unique world heritage. Venice is a floating art city that has inspired cultures for centuries, but to continue to do so it needs the support of our generation and future ones, because it is threatened by climate change and time decay,’

Support provides a powerful visual that transcends ideological boundaries and communicates the urgency behind climate action. This ability to find consensus through visuals has been communicated to people globally because of social media. How important is social media in democratizing climate change campaigns? What role do artists play in raising awareness about environmental issues? I have been incredibly lucky to have been able to convey my message through my sculpture. Social media has definitely played a great role in getting the message across. It spread like wildfire. The image was
