When we speak about crime, we often focus on preventing it instead of looking at the source of the social problem. People who commit crime might possibly be deriving from backgrounds that are crime prone, where the family unit has disintegrated. Parallel this with studies shows that an enormous majority of prisoners across India return to a life of crime upon release from prison. There is therefore a constant cycle between the committers of crime and society, and it doesn’t end when they are put in prison. More often than not, prisons fill in as reproducing reason for further crimes, for resentment. By creating an unhealthy prison environment, we are therefore cultivating more crime.

This thesis strive to humanize the architecture of prison and specifically for undertrial inmates. Prisons have been one of the most neglected section in terms of architecture. Most of the prisons in our country have been functioning since the British times and also suffers from hygiene issues and inhabitable living condition. In terms of infrastructure the prisons need immense up gradation. As one enters a space, whether its positive or negative, he is psychologically affected by that particular space. The aim of this thesis is to design prison for under trials.
