Note
We’re living in history, y’all!
I am so proud to be a gay man. I was deeply moved and overjoyed by the Supreme Court decisions on both the DOMA and Prop 8 cases. These decisions have an enormous impact on our lives legally, fiscally, and emotionally. True, they weren’t the broad-sweeping changes that many of us hoped for; however, they’re undeniable steps toward equality. Moments like this make me intensely proud to be an American. I am proud to live in a country where all men are created equal where mob rule doesn’t let the majority deny fundamental rights to people they dislike or don’t understand. Yes, we still have a lot of work left to do, but man oh man a long fought victory tastes so sweet! I want to thank everyone involved who made this happen. Thank you so much Edith Windsor and the late Thea Spyer (Edith - you are just the cutest thing), every member of HRC & GLAAD, Georgia Equality, Jeff Cleghorn, Paul Horning, Jeff Graham, Justices Kennedy, Ginsburg, Breyer, Sotomayor, and Kagan and the thousands of individuals, politicians, lobbyists, and allies who helped get us closer to real equality.
Your new life together starts now. Protect each other from this day forward. Get the life insurance that’s right for you. We put the life back in life insurance
A message to Justice Scalia: Contrary to what you wrote in your opinion, we are not “enemies of the human race,” we are just as much a part of the human race as you. How about climbing off of your soapbox of hate and try loving your fellow man for a change? Love is love, and really - love always wins in the end. Hope you enjoy this issue! A Few Lesbian Myths Dispelled Berlin Sylvestre, Staff Writer
Fisting is the norm. It wasn’t until a road trip with a group of straight guys that I was privy to this gem: “Lesbians LOVE fisting! Why don’t you know that, Berlin?” Perhaps I didn’t get the memo, but if I did, I’d crumple that shit up and toss it from a high-rise. I bet this sentiment comes from “lesbian” porn, which I can assure you is (a majority of the time) NOT made for the enjoyment of lesbians. Number one: There’s a vast assortment of toys designed specifically for two chicks to get their kink on (should they want to go that route). Secondly, few women want to plunder (and possibly damage) the uncharted territories of their lover’s birth canal. (Eww.) Three, the very act sounds painful, dangerous, and (frankly) kinda disgusting. Lastly, I’m not even sure a woman can get off that way, but even if she could, no thanks, mate.
We just haven’t given dick a fair shake. Stereotypes don’t exist because some unknown committee decided to typecast certain kinds of people, but rather because stereotypes are just observances of what’s common in certain demographics. Yes, gay men stereotypically dress nicer than their hetero counterparts. Yes, straight women are make-up retailers’ bread and butter. However, there are lots of things to be said about the exceptions to “the rule” of stereotypes. Now, naturally I can’t speak for an entire sect of humankind, but I’ve heard my fair share of preconceived notions about lesbians and I think I’ve got a pretty good handle on some common misgivings some lesbians — if not most — find laughable. Below are a few.
We fall in love too fast. You know the joke, right? “What does a lesbian bring on the second date? A U-Haul!” (I’m sure someone laughed at that in 1983.) If not for the tiresome nature of hearing it over and over, but for the “Do what now?” factor, I wish that wisecrack would just die, already. All human beings are capable (and guilty) of jumping into relationships before assessing the overall compatibility of their lovers. That mess happens to every faction of those in the dating scene — not just lesbians. In truth, the Sapphic can be a picky bunch who write off other women for the simplest of things, again, just like everyone else. 16 : July 4, 2013
We have penis-envy. Would I love being able to pee standing up? Hell yeah. Do I think weenies are kinda neat? I absolutely do! But, as a penisless human being, am I bitter at my lack of one? Pssh. While I can imagine it’s amazing to watch a delightfully sensitive part of you “disappear” into your lover, so to speak, I don’t think trading the 8,000 nerve endings we enjoy down there for the roughly 4,000 nerve endings that guys are blessed with is a good call. But that’s just me doing math. I mean, really: Do gay guys get jealous that they don’t have boobs? Maybe some do, but they’re probably the exception, ya know?
Be honest: You knew your sexual preference before you even knew how to have sex, right? So you know, like I know, that it doesn’t matter how good sex might be with a member of the opposite sex, it just wouldn’t feel right. My favorite response to the idea that I just need some “good dick” is: “I don’t have to eat dogshit to know I don’t like it.” (Not that I mean to imply that sleeping with men is like eating dogshit. You know what I mean, though.)
We All Love Sports. To be quite honest, the most fervent female sports fans I’ve ever met were the girlfriends/wives of guys who are big into sports. That’s not to say that their love of sports was cultivated to fit in with their mates, but who knows? I’ve never asked. The only lesbians I’ve ever met who were/ are ardent fans of “watching the game” are current or former athletes, or those who root for their alma mater’s football team. It could be that I just don’t hang out with sporty lesbos, but I have met a lot of gay ladies in my time on this earth who just don’t give a rat’s ass about sports.
We All Know Our Way Around A Toolbox. I can’t tell you how many times a woman has asked me to assemble her (crazy-weird) bookcase or look at her broken dryer/dishwasher/etc. to see if I can sort the problem out. When I offer an explanation that I’m pretty bad at engineering and assembly (even with instructions), I’m met with that puzzled look. “You’re a lesbian, though!” is the typical response. Uh huh. But I’m not an engineer. Some lesbians are good at that, some straight women are awesome at that, some hetero-guys suck at it. Where the idea that we’re inherently made for this sort of thing comes from is beyond me, but if a gay chick just so happens to be amazing at it, it’s because she’s got the knack for it — not because she likes other women.
We All Hate Bisexual Girls. There are tons of lesbians who’ve been spurned by women who also like men, sure. However, lesbians who shun, and even despise, bisexual girls really ought to take a step back and think about the hypocrisy of their discrimination, because lesbians can be (and have been) cheaters, too. However, the most common belief is that a woman who also likes men is always (always!) going to cheat on her girlfriend with a man. That simply isn’t the case. Not only are bisexual girls completely capable of monogamy, there are tons of cases of bisexual girls who were cheated on by their lesbian lovers. Should those bi-chicks conclude that the entire lesbian community can’t be trusted? Nope. So lesbians need to lay off the bi hate and realize that a woman’s sexual preference doesn’t determine how faithful she will be to you.
Scissoring. Right ... 'cause that's so effective.
Some readers will, kinda like myself, immediately think of exceptions to my exceptions. “Hey! My girlfriend likes sports!” Well then, she’s par for the archetype course on that bullet point, I suppose. As I said, stereotypes have reason to exist. I just wanted to point out a few ways that some lesbians get pigeonholed and vastly misread. Maybe this piece is rather contrarian, placing Yours Truly in the realm of yet another stereotype.

For that next fabulous party, why not think outside the box and serve something sweet and scrumptious that’s all about Atlanta? Cupcakes are so yesteryear and hot apple pie just doesn’t satisfy this time of year? Take a look at these ATL offerings and give the littler guys a try: KING OF POPS came to be when owner Steven Carse was inspired by his travels south of the border. It seemed that many countries were enjoying their own take on frozen confections for years, partitioning refreshing fruit pops amongst the masses. Steven was so impressed, he decided to try the concept here in Georgia and in just a few short years, a new form of ATL delectability was created. These days, the chilled treats come in a seemingly endless array of fruity and creamy flavors, with Chocolate Sea Salt being the handsdown
crowd favorite. The pops have become something of a social staple, showing up tucked inside their hallmark push carts at nearly all public events. Plus, something about this simple delivery makes King of Pops feel like an old friend and Steven Carse says he wouldn’t have it any other way. Think of serving these at your next party chilled on ice! KING OF POPS: atlanta.kingofpops.net
A hankering for the perfect sweet treat and a deep knowledge of the kitchen was the combination that catalyzed the creation of SUBLIME DOUGHNUTS. Kamal Grant was driving through Atlanta when he recognized the lack of independent doughnut shops and thought: “Why not me?” So the former Navy cook who had trained at the Culinary Institute of America put his know-how into action, bought an old doughnut shop, and transformed the expectations of pastry loving locals forever. These days, Grant’s pillowy soft, fried delicacies are available by the dozen at the mothership on 10th Street. Fresh Strawberry N Cream holds the title for most popular but dozens of other options also have tons of love to give. As Grant recommends, “Doughnuts are a good thing to share. Get a dozen, eat three, and share the rest.” Not a bad idea for your next get together. SUBLIME DOUGHNUTS: sublimedoughnuts.com America has a love affair with ice cream and Atlanta is no exception. While a few local artisan makers have popped up over the years, a new kid on the block that’s quickly converting the masses is HIGH ROAD, headed by Nicki and Keith Schroeder. This small operation is committed to quality, taking great pride in all stages of frozen confection perfection. From start to finish, from on-site pasteurization to hand made chocolates, High Road does it all from scratch. One taste of Bourbon Burnt Sugar will make anyone dive for the bottom of the pint in a cream-craving stupor. Really, its hard to explain the full, expansible mouthfeel of High Road ice cream, so self-sampling is a must. Tours of the factory store are available free to public on Saturdays, but an easy alternative is to pick up a pint or 10 for your next function at any area Whole Foods or fine grocer.
It’s a win-win situation when we support Atlanta business … and the fact that they’re all homegrown is icing on the ice cream cake. 22 : July 4, 2013

What do the Supreme Court Gays? Decisions Mean for Georgia Dwane Kinney, Digital Editor
For months we anxiously waited to learn the fate of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and California's Prop 8. Well, the decisions are in and the monumental Supreme Court rulings were well worth the wait. So, what did the Supreme Court actually decide and how does that affect you here in Georgia?
28 : July 4, 2013
DOMA was ruled unconstitutional and is now just a painful memory from our past. Specifically, Section Three of DOMA was struck down. It prevented the federal government from recognizing any samesex marriage, even if gay marriage was legal in your state. "The federal statute is invalid, for no legitimate purpose overcomes the purpose and effect to disparage and to injure those whom the State, by its marriage laws, sought to protect in personhood and dignity,” Justice Anthony Kennedy read to the Court from the majority opinion. The decision came down to a 5-4 vote ruling that DOMA was a violation of the Fifth Amendment.
Prop 8 is also officially history. The Supreme Court found that the private group suing to enforce California’s Prop 8 lacked standing. Therefore, the Ninth Circuit’s previous judgment was vacated and remanded with specific instructions to dismiss the Prop 8 appeal. This is legal talk for: “Prop 8 supporters shouldn’t have been suing in the first place.” So, Prop 8 remains unconstitutional and gay marriage will return to California. Everyone was already in court, so why didn’t the Supreme Court go ahead and rule on gay marriage and be done with it? According to Chief Justice Roberts in the Prop 8 decision, “The Court does not have before it, and the logic of its opinion does not decide, the distinct question whether the States … may continue to utilize the traditional definition of marriage.” Therefore, states like Georgia can continue to discriminate against gays and ban same-sex marriage. The Prop 8 decision only confirms the lower court’s ruling that a constitutional ban on samesex marriage violates California’s state constitution. But, The Supreme Court said that the federal government has to recognize same-sex marriages, right? So, can you get
" If you get married in Massachusetts and drive back home, you'll still be legally married for part of your trip, but the further south you go the more your marriage certificate loses value."
Georgia, then affected couples will have to sue. married in Ptown, Massachusetts and then return home to Georgia and receive federal recognition of your marriage? The answer is pretty disappointing — maybe. Currently, no one knows the answer to this question with any degree of certainty. It will take direct action by the Obama administration or a new court case before we will learn what happens to your gay marriage when you return home from Ptown. Hopefully we won’t have to wait very long for this answer. Once the scenario arises, the Obama administration will have to decide. If he doesn’t recognize legal gay marriages of couples living in
If it sounds like a bit of a mess, that’s because it truly is. Right now we have a patchwork of different laws. If you get married in Massachusetts and drive back home, you’ll still be legally married for part of your trip, but the further south you go the more your marriage certificate loses value. Oppositesex married couples do not have to deal with this dilemma. If they want to have a destination wedding in New York, they’re still married when they return home to Georgia. This situation is indefensible and won’t last forever.
It is in light of this that our community is as hopeful as ever that our fight for marriage equality will ultimately be successful. To quote Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., “... the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” Let us hope that justice comes sooner rather than later.

Sweetness Interview by Dino Thompson-Sarmiento, Senior Writer
You may remember Jason Dottley from the Del Shores cult-smash “Sordid Lives.” Or perhaps you’ve cut loose to some of his Billboard-ranking dance tracks at clubs (and Pride events) across the world. Though there’s more to Jason than movies and music, the 32-year-old NYCresident is known for being quiet on a score of fronts. What was his life like before the spotlight? How’s he been emotionally since his highly publicized Hollywood divorce from filmmaker Del Shores? What’s he up to now? For the first time ever, he speaks about lost Hollywood love, his dalliances with drugs, the time he contracted an STD, and other sordid affairs. As a young man, Jason was no stranger to the world of drugs. “My Dad was in and out of rehab for his addiction to drugs like crack and cocaine,” he tells FENUXE. “I was driving home from an AP English class when I found out he died in a car wreck.” Three months later, Jason dropped ecstasy for the first time and was “completely seduced by the feeling of numbness.” Throughout middle and high school, he was picked on for being gay. “I remember this redhead who always picked fights with me for no reason,” he recalls. “I developed social anxiety and a stutter, then ended up being afraid to talk because of my stutter.”
FENUXE.COM : 37
But once he came out in the 10th grade, things changed. “One time this guy in high school said to me, ‘You're a fag!’ I turned around and said to him, ‘Thank you for pointing that out. I totally forgot I was gay.’ I had so many friends at this point in school and so much confidence, I never felt unsafe again. “When you come out and you're proud and strong, no one is going to bully you.” Even with his newfound strength, and after graduating in the top five percent in his class, Jason remained a regular user between the
That moment finally came and I decided to make a change.” Jason began his pursuit in theater and the small screen. He met Del in Los Angeles and the two fell in love. He sobered up for the most part, only smoking marijuana. For the next eight years, Jason and Del were married in spirit, but only during the last three years of their relationship were they legally married due to California’s law changing in 2008. Eight years is a good run, but the marriage eventually fell apart.
for me to leave L.A.,” he acknowledges. “I needed to find myself. It wasn't about the marriage; it was about me. I was living a life I didn't want anymore and only you can take care of you.” Once back in Florida, he stopped partying. “I was afraid of not being in control. It seemed like a bomb was going to go off,” he asserts. “I was scared. I prayed internally [to find] the God in me — after all, I believe we all represent God in our life. If you're doing something stupid, you know it.”
If you're going to leave the house looking ages of 19 and 22, relying on drugs to shut down his emotional core. “A lot of men seek out sex [to cope] — I don't. I wasn't after dick, I was after drugs. I'd pop an Ambien, drink alcohol, smoke some marijuana, then head out for the night.” But drugs is no way to make a name for yourself. “Someone told me, ‘When your need for change exceeds your fear of it, you’ll change.’
38 : July 4, 2013
“By the end of my marriage, I started seeking numbness again. I wasn't happy,” he confesses. “I was seeking external light, not realizing I had one within.” He doesn’t credit his marriage to Del as the source of his pain, but says that “the brighter the light from the outside shined on me, the dimmer my own light inside became.” After the divorce, Jason sobered up and moved to Panama City to help his grandmother who was fighting lung cancer. “It was a great time
When asked if he has any love interests currently, Jason says: “I was in love for most of last year, and it was a thrilling and needed experience. He inspired my current record “It’s Our Night” and got me through six of the hardest months of my life. We are just friends, and I’m really grateful for him and the experience. When you’re lucky enough to find someone in life whom you love, you can’t complain about how they fit into your it. Just be grateful they’re in it. Now, I’m focusing on my family and work. I’ll get back to romantic love soon enough.”
After dealing with the heartache of a broken relationship, I ask if he’s afraid of falling in love again.
past doesn't know how to respect the disease,” he says passionately. “I want to sit all these young kids down and talk to them.”
“How can you be afraid of love?” he responds. “Love and fear cannot coexist."
“Protection is important,” he adds. “I value my life and those of others. I recently got my meningitis vaccination in NY because of the health scare happening with it right now. The Gay Men's Health Center is giving them out for free. You have to pay attention and protect yourself."
“But," he adds, "if you're going to leave the house looking for love, you might as well stay home." As Jason is a young single guy, I move on to the topic of safe sex. We talk about Truvada, a combination of two antiretroviral drugs used

for love, you might as well stay home. for the treatment of HIV. Some individuals erroneously feel that contracting HIV through unprotected sex can be reversed by taking Truvada the next day, as it’s rumored to kill small amounts of the disease. This is a dangerous rumor that needs to be addressed. “What advice would you offer to the younger generation regarding safe sex?” I ask him. “I'm well aware about HIV and the seed of fear about contracting it. Taking a pill does not solve the problem and this new generation who doesn't understand what happened in our
“I was in London, newly single,” he begins. “I picked up a really cute guy who was out celebrating his birthday — okay, his 18th — and he gave me a blow job. Within a couple of days, I had this excruciating pain while trying to urinate. I found out I contracted an STD from getting head just once! Lesson learned: You must protect yourself.” Jason says he’s not in the least bit promiscuous and that the London incident was a fluke. "I'm a big flirt, but I'm all talk."
One of the things that actually scares him about being single is being a guy in a room full of people who are talking about having sex with him. Given those puppy dog eyes and all that talent, lustful eyes are something he’ll have to get used to. Thank you Jason for sharing with us and congratulations on your hit single “It's Our Night" currently at #24* on Billboard (his third Top 25 record). LEO [JUl. 23 – aUG. 22]
What’s the difference between two dicks and a joke? (You can’t take a joke.) Lighten up, boo! You’re not usually this uptight.
virgo [aUG. 23 – SEpT. 22] Remember when that drag queen said you looked like your face was on fire and someone tried to put it out with a fork? this week won’t be that rough.
libra [SEpT. 23 – OCT. 22]
The next time that hussy at the bar insults your outfit, go: “Whoa! I used to have shoes like that, but then I got a job.” Bitch.
scorpio [OCT. 23 – NOV. 22]
You love to give advice and your partner would love to agree with you, but then you’d both be wrong, so ...
SAGITTARIUS [NOV. 23 – DEC. 21]
Did that guy just say, “I’d love to bang your brains out, but someone beat me to it”?! You’re getting way too sloshed to take home these days, gorl.
Capricorn [DEC. 22 – JaN. 19]
Ask your soon-to-be ex: “Does your ass ever get jealous at the amount of sh*t coming out of your mouth?” He’ll know you’re onto him.
AQUARIUS [JaN. 20 – FEB. 18] “Let’s try some role reversal. this time, you can be right and I’ll be the idiot,” you said to your boss. (Remember having a job?)
PISCES [FEB. 19 – maR. 20]
It was hilarious when you told your homophobe neighbor: “If you were any more inbred, you’d be a sandwich.” Good work, dear. (It’ll take him a minute.)
ARIES [maR. 21 – apR. 19]
“I’d tell you a joke about my penis, but it’s too long,” said the corny guy at the bar. “I’d tell you one about my ass, but you’ll never get it,” replied you. Werk!
Taurus [apR. 20 – may 20]
Your brother called you fat again? “Nice blazer you’re wearing! Do they make it in your size?” (Hey, he’s actually pretty good at that. Ain’t even mad.)
GemIni [may 21 – JUN. 22]
When your ex told you that you made up in speed what you lacked in size, you countered that even a jet looks small in the Grand Canyon. (7 out of 10 stars, Gem.)

Holler Poodles!! Let’s have a Kiki! Girl, I had to look up kiki--I thought it meant two drag queens having sex. Come to find out, its just a party... a gossipy party. Who knew? Well since I am often a party guest, I can tell you what makes a great party. In fact, you should probably go ahead and clip this article as your ‘go to party guide.’ Follow these simple rules and you will be the master [or sub] of your next gathering. 1. Location! Location! Location! Queens do not like to travel far from their appointed nest. Be sure your next party is within the confines of midtown. I highly recommend an exquisite, little known place like Ponce dé Leon as a go to destination. Not only is it rife with colorful characters, the imminent police presence gives you a free flashing blue light show while making your guests feel safe. And what’s a stray bullet between friends? 2. Party Theme! Homosexuals love a party theme they can dress up for! Some themes work better than others so be sure you give it a little thought. I personally like a “Cops” themed party given the Ponce de Leon locale. Try not to look too much like a hooker though--you might get yo head bashed upside de Clermont Lounge if someone feels like
54 : July 4, 2013
you is empoaching on they’s terrimatories! 3. Alcohol is key! It can make a bad party bearable, a good party great and a great party memorable (or forgettable) depending on how much you drink. I recommend mixing lots of different liquors together ($2 Buck Chuck, PBR & other MD 20/20) to pack a punch that will literally knock your guests out. 4. Invite the right people! Diversity is the key! Next time you’re drunk, go on all your social media outlets (Grindr, Scruff, Craigslist) and put out a generic party invitation. I guarantee you’ll have the right mix of people at your next gathering! You now have the right ingredients for the perfect kiki! All you need now is me! I’m only an email away. Lover and lashes MEP

Norcostco Atlanta Costume Makeup Tip: After your foundation has been set with powder, it is helpful to place loose powder under your eyes to catch loose eyeshadow (which can easily be brushed away afterwards) Ben Nye has some heavily pigmented shadows which go on great for drag. In addition, their Lumiere collection is perfect for blending and achieving an airbrushed look. My rule of thumb is to limit eyeshadow colors to no more than 3 (light, medium, & dark).
