LITTLE HELPERS The hours spent roaming in the sun, the late nights and the joy of increased activity outside are all joys of summer, however, these pleasurable times often take a toll on our looks. A few quick remedies and products you will not only save the day, but your entire summer – and you’ll look good while doing it! Mikkel Hyldebrandt, Grooming Director SUNSCREEN the top priority in protecting your skin when the sun is out is sunscreen. Whenever you’re in direct sunlight you should wear sunscreen so you skin doesn’t burn and get damaged. 1. Neutrogena Beach Defense Water + Sun Protection Sunscreen Stick SPF 50+, $11

COOL THE BURN If you do get a sunburn the best way to ease the pain and dissipate the heat is to apply a cooled, pure aloe vera gel. Skip any lotions as they could clog your skin and make the burning sensation worse. Also, ibuprofen helps can help relieve any pain the aloe leaves behind. 2. Banana Boat Pure Aloe Vera Gel, $5

SAVE THE BEARD facial hair can become dry and brittle just like the hair on your scalp when exposed to summery elements. Keep it clean and use a good beard balm, which will work wonders not only for your beard but also for the skin underneath. 3. Badrick’s Da Balm, $20

AFTER A LATE NIGHT Staying up late enjoying a few cool drinks simply screams summer – but your skin will often show the signs of a late night the day after. unless you remember to cleanse your skin and apply this ingenious overnight mask before bedtime, then you'll look fresh as a sea breeze.

SAVE YOUR BREATH With up to 99% natural ingredients this breath spray is nothing like the chemical cocktails you spritz in your mouth when a toothbrush is not at hand. yum, minty! 5. Hello Breath Spray Mojito Mint, $4

AVOID THE FUZZ Before hitting the beach most guys want to rid themselves of excessive body hair (unless of course you’re into that). this razor is designed to follow the contours of your body to shave off all hair growth from the neck down. 6. Gillette Body Shaver, $9

SHOWER ON THE GO Going directly from the pool party to a dinner without a shower? no problem! the deodorizing wipes from niche are designed to cleanse and freshen you up – it’s actually a shower in a wipe!

7. Niche For Men Deodorizing Wipes (5 x 2pk.), $12

NEVER FEEL STICKY you know how all that salt water and sunscreen can make you feel a little sticky? A few sprays from this product and you’ll be good as new.

9. Sachajuan Leave-In Conditioner, $28

Did You Know... ... that by using too little sunscreen will not cut the sun factor in half but rather diminish it by the square root? That way sun protection factor (sPf) 30 will become 7.5. a generous handful equaling 1-2 ounces is a good amount - but you can never go wrong with smoothing more than that on your skin.

8. Gold Bond Powder Spray, $5

SAVE YOUR HAIR refreshing dips in the water and lots of summertime sun exposure presents a challenge no matter what type of hair you have. A good leave-in conditioner will not only make your hair more manageable, but it will save your locks.

SUMMER IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER AND THE GAY COMMUNITY IS ALREADY BUZZING ABOUT ATLANTA COTILLION'S ANNUAL AVANTGARDE BALL BENEFITING AID ATLANTA. THE EVENT HAS BECOME GAY ATLANTA'S FAVORITE WAY TO CELEBRATE THE ARRIVAL OF SUMMER AND THIS YEAR IT IS GOING TO BE BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER. ATLANTA COTILLION PRESENTS "CIRQUE DE NUIT EN ROUGE" WILL TAKE PLACE ON THE FIRST DAY OF SUMMER, JUNE 21, AT THE DELTA FLIGHT MUSEUM STARTING AT 7 P.M.

this year Atlanta cotillion is giving the annual ball a facelift and the changes have everyone excited. “last year we introduced an entirely new event and concept from years past,” edward Holifield, one of event’s original debutantes and chairman for the past five years, tells fenuxe during a recent interview. But don’t worry. they’re keeping all of the best parts from previous events that gay Atlanta loves, and if there is one thing that everyone remembers and loves about Atlanta cotillion’s events it’s the incredible fashion on display. Guests truly go all out in creating and styling avant-garde cocktail wear and it creates a fun and unique atmosphere you won’t find at other Atlanta events. “We have merged all the best parts of Atlanta cotillion into one event, Atlanta cotillion Presents “cirque de nuit en rouge,” with amazing nationally known performers, an exciting silent auction and avant-garde attire, where only your imagination is the limit,” edward explains,

“We have evolved over the years. from asking ten guys to raise money over six months with endless parties and events ending up at a formal ball in female attire, to what is now Atlanta cotillion Presents, an amazing all inclusive avant-garde gala where all are welcome.” Another part of the event that isn’t changing (and it’s the most important part) is that the event still benefits AID Atlanta and the amazing work they do in our community. In fact, Atlanta cotillion has benefited AID Atlanta since its commencement in 2002. “Atlanta cotillion is the largest single donor of unrestricted funds to the agency outside of the AIDS Walk,” edward points out, “through all our efforts, the debutantes, the queens, the donors, the volunteers and our sponsors we have raised $1.2 million. the money raised is used to enhance access to clinical services. AID Atlanta uses the unrestricted dollars to supplement programs such as the evolution center for young mSm, pay for labs for those who cannot afford them and medicines after their ryan White dollars have been exhausted.” the fashion will be on point, as always, and the money being raised is going to a fantastic cause. But what about this year’s entertainment? everyone at Atlanta cotillion is thrilled to welcome a bevy of world class

entertainers this year. Prince Poppycock, who won us over in 2010 during the fifth season of “America’s Got talent,” and the dance crew Dragon House from “So you think you Dance” are joining Atlanta aerial and cirquestyle performing group liquid Sky for an incredible series of performances during “cirque de nuit en rouge.” last year’s guests were spellbound by liquid Sky’s intoxicating performances (you may also recognize them from their performances at fenuxe’s 2012 and 2013 fire Party) and this year they’re raising the bar. “We’re going to have multiple ambient aerial atmospherics including aerial stilts, trapeze and aerial swings,” liquid Sky performer marilyn chen reveals to fenuxe, “We’ll also be rigging a giant crescent shape moon that will be featured in our showcase with multiple performers.” they’re an incredibly talented group of artists and we simply can’t wait to see the show. this year’s “cirque de nuit en rouge” presented by Atlanta cotillion is shaping up to be the can’t-miss party of season. If you want help AID Atlanta even more consider going VIP. “not only will [guests] enjoy an expanded complimentary bar, but they will enjoy specialty hors d'oeuvres and have access to the new mezzanine level that overlooks the venue,” edward says, “not to mention they will be able to mix and mingle with our celebrity guests.”

This year Key West

Where To Stay?

is celebrating pride

This year the fun starts on June 11 with a kick-off pool party sponsored by The Island House (islandhousekeywest.com) called “Bow Ties & Bubbly.” If you’ve never stayed at The Island House in Key West you’re missing out on one of America’s great gay resorts. The property fills up incredibly fast during pride so if you want a room you may have to rely on luck or a cancellation. “Since we’re a small island I recommend that people make reservations as soon as possible,” Matt Han from the Key West Business Guild told FENUXE, “We have a limited number of hotel rooms on the island. So, it’s best to make your reservations early so you will have a fabulous place to stay.”

with five days of incredible events and wicked fun island parties. Where else can you find a pride celebration that boasts activities on land and on water? It’s a winning combination that incorporates everything you love about pride with the perfect June beach getaway. 18 : June 5, 2014

Boasting an entire property of recent renovations and upgrades, the Island House is a tiny slice of gay vacation heaven that’s also clothing optional. You can bask in the buff in all of the Island House’s common areas (except the new gym where shorts and shoes are required) including the new sundeck. It’s located on the second floor and even has a built-in misting system to make sure things don’t get too hot while you’re working on your tan. If you stay at The Island House don’t miss their daily happy hour from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. where you can enjoy a complimentary open-bar that includes premium spirits, craft beer and champagne. It’s a great way to get into the island spirit

on your first day of Key West Pride and it conveniently ends right before the start of the Miss Key West Pride 2014 contest at 801 Bourbon Bar (801bourbon.com).

Where To Party? Key West Pride is known for having some of the best pride parties in the world and this year will be no exception. If you’re looking for an event like no other check out Saloon One’s Infamous Fetish Party (801bourbon.com/1saloon.html). Billed as an event “not for the faint of heart” this party features leather, toys and a contest searching for the best ‘package.’ On Saturday don’t miss the Purgatory Foam Party at the Bourbon St. Pub (bourbonstpub.com). It’s another wild and wonderful party where wearing fetish attire is encouraged and is known as one of Key West Pride’s can’t-miss events. If you’ve never been to Key West you’ll likely still recognize this nightlife hotspot from CNN’s annual New Years Eve show. Every year instead of dropping a ball or

Where To See The Parade? Key West Pride’s parade goes from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean so there are plenty of great places to catch the action. In our opinion, the best spot to catch the parade is near the end of the route on Duval Street. There are lots of great gay bars in the area, and it’s an area that is always buzzing, especially during pride.

peach at midnight the Bourbon St. Pub lowers local drag entertainer Sushi in a giant red heel. Before you say goodbye to picturesque Key West enjoy your last night out at the final pride party at Aqua nightclub (aquakeywest.com) appropriated called “Dance The Nite Away.” It’s a great time to say goodbye to the hottie that you met on the beach and the perfect chance to see the club’s resident drag entertainers, the Aquanettes, perform.

World Pride D. David Kinney, Digital Editor

World Pride is in Toronto this year and Pride Toronto is poised to celebrate in style with the largest pride the city has ever seen. Pride Toronto is always a massive and super fun event, but this year they're pulling out all of the stops for ten glorious days of non-stop concerts, exhibits and parties. Even though the party is in Canada it won't take you long to get there. In fact, the flight to Toronto only takes about 20 minutes longer than the flight to Key West. Looking to save some money on your airfare? If you book your flight with Air Canada you can save 10% by using this discount code K8Y4ADR1. 20 : June 5, 2014

Where To Stay? If you want to stay near the heart of the action during World Pride in Toronto make sure to pick a hotel near the Gay District. It’s called Church-Wellesley Village and has several different accommodation options that range from affordable to luxurious. If you’ve got a couple of extra dollars to spend on your hotel we suggest booking a room at the Windsor Arms Hotel (windsorarmshotel. com). Located just two and a half blocks from Church Street this five star hotel is worth the expense. Not only will you be located just a stones throw from all of the great events happening in the Gay District, but you’ll also have a peaceful place to relax between events. If you’d prefer to book a suite instead of a traditional hotel room you can get even closer to the action at the Town Inn Suites (towninn.com). With an indoor swimming pool, sauna and sundeck this property is a great choice for celebrating World Pride. Sundeck? Does it even get that sunny in Toronto? Don’t be fooled! Summertime in Toronto can become incredibly warm and you’ll have no problem enhancing your tan (or getting burnt to a crisp if you forget sunscreen).

Where To Party? If you’ve ever made the trek to Pride Toronto you know that their parties are absolutely out of this world. From street parties with guys in speedos grooving to the music while getting hosed down by firemen to celebrity artists performing on the main stage, there is going to be something for everyone at this year’s World Pride. Kicking off World Pride’s ten day celebration is a concert at Nathan Phillips Square featuring GRAMMY award-winning singer Melissa Etheridge. She will be joined by Deborah Cox and Steve Grand (the Chicago singer and songwriter who performed during Atlanta Pride last year). Prefer something with a little more pop?

as “Babylon” from Showtime’s “Queer As Folk.” Although the show was set in Pittsburgh the scenes were actually filmed in Toronto. However, World Pride will be your last opportunity to party like Stuart and Vince on the show. The club is shutting down after pride wraps up this year. The space is reportedly being shuttered so that a high-rise can be built. Where To See The Parade?

World Pride has teamed up with MTV for “Pop Goes Pride” featuring Carly Rae Jepsen. You can catch her performance at the TD Wellesley Stage on June 27. If you’ve never experienced Pride Toronto’s annual Aqua party stop reading this and book your trip immediately. Trust us - it’s that awesome. Imagine being surrounded by some of the hottest guys in the world (who seem to be competing for the title of skimpiest bathing suit) while world famous DJs spin the crowd into a tizzy. Oh, did we mention the party also features 22 different water fountains for you and the hotties to play in? If the Joining Hearts annual pool party married Tomorrowworld, Aqua would totally be their love child. If you’re looking to hit the bar and club scene an always popular choice is Fly. However, you may know it better

The Pride Toronto annual parade is always a huge event. In fact, with the city celebrating World Pride this year the parade promises to be largest pride parade ever in Canada. There has been so much interest in participating in this year’s parade that organizers have literally had to extend the event by an extra hour. So where is the best place to see the parade? That depends on how you want to enjoy it. If you prefer to have a cocktail and enjoy the parade from a distance campout at one of the gay bars on Church Street. Just make sure you get there early because people being picking out their parade spots pretty early. If you just want to view the parade from the sidewalk you’ll find perfect viewing spots throughout the entire parade route. The parade will start at the intersection of Bloor and Church Streets. It will continue all of the way to Yonge Street and ends at the Yonge-Dundas Square.

Montpellier Pride D. David Kinney, Digital Editor

What could possibly be better than a trip to the south of France? Not much. But planning your trip to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the Marche des Diversit's Lesbian & Gay Pride in Montpellier will do it! Do we really need to sell you on the idea of celebrating pride with the incredibly sexy men who call the Mediterranean seaside home? Oh lA lA, indeed! 22 : June 5, 2014

Where To Stay? Finding a good hotel in France can be a bit tricky. Luckily, Montpellier is very walkable and most of the gay pride events and parties are held at venues close to the old city center. Just a short stroll from the heart of the gay district you’ll find Suite Novotel Montpellier. It’s a modern hotel with all of the amenities you’ll need, including a pool. If you want to stay closer to the action remember that Montpellier is a very old city and the closer you get to the city center the older the buildings are. That means smaller hotel rooms and less amenities, however, the quality of hotels in the old city center is incredibly impressive.

club where you’ll find gay men and women enjoying gay life in the south of France. We’ve also heard good things about Nabu Gay Club, but haven’t actually checked it out ourselves.

Where To Party? One place. Three words. Places des Fleurs. That’s all the French you need to remember to find the gays in Montpellier. The public square, formally known as the Place du Marché aux Fleurs, has become the unofficial gay district of Montpellier. Lots of bistros and bars line the public square and they’re all quite gay-friendly and full of gay patrons, but you’ll want to head directly to Café de la Mer (Place du Marché aux Fleurs 5). You can dance the night away with the cute and friendly locals here or ask the bartenders about where the next party is going to be. They’re super helpful and will even give you a map to help you find the other gay bars. If you want to explore gay life outside of the gay square try Le Heaven (1 Rue Delpech). It’s a dance

Where To See The Parade? The parade route begins at the gardens by Les Arceaux and goes down Rue Foch to the Places des Fleurs. If you want a great spot to see the parade try securing a spot near the beginning of the parade route. The Places des Fleurs is always packed with local French gays, but during pride it is absolutely filled to the brim. But don’t be intimidated by the crowds. It’s a cheerful atmosphere and the locals are absolutely wonderful!

Photographer Magnus Hastings has been documenting drag queens for more than a decade. Now he will exhibit his colorful and stunningly beautiful staged portraits with his “Why Drag? show at the OUT Hotel in New York City. FENUXE tracked the talented photographer down to chat about beginnings, inspirations, how he got one of the coolest gallery spaces in NYC and, of course, the obvious question:

and continues, “I got in touch with the OUT NYC Hotel because they have an amazing lobby area, which doubles as a gallery space - perfect! First they showed me this conference room which I declined - it was just too small - but then I was sitting editing some photos in the lobby when this guy from the hotel walks by and sees them. Before you know it they had cleared their schedule for three months for their big lobby space for my canvasses.”

As a London-raised, self-taught photographer Magnus Hastings started snapping photos at the age of fifteen. Combined with his fascination with drag queens – he actually calls himself ‘a child of drag’ – his skill with the camera naturally evolved into captivating the wondrous world of drag on film. Initially, Hastings wanted to be an actor and did photography as an additional creative outlet, but eventually he switched tracks to completely focus on photography. He quickly became London’s most popular headshot photographer with clientele from the worlds of celebrity and fashion, but continued to photograph drag queens throughout. When Hastings decided to move to L.A. it was because he wanted to further his career in fashion

Magnus Hastings’ work really speaks for itself. It’s arrestingly stunning and personal. For the large space at the OUT he decided to ‘go big or go home’ so all of the canvasses (55 in all) are enormous to accommodate the space. However, they’re also big because he wanted the show to be an

you dressing up for?” that many think it is: “It is my question to them about their love for the art form of performing in drag,” Hastings explains, “And it’s the question that every single drag queen will answer at some point in their lives.” So instead of “Why drag?” the question could just as well be “Why not drag?” And if you think that drag or putting on a persona is solely something that involves sequins, heels and a feathered head dress, think again, because according to Hastings the mentality is evident in more ways than one. To prove it he draws a rather surprising but befitting comparison between the ‘muscle gays’ and ‘drag queens:’ “Using steroids to get pumped is just as much a costume or a role as doing drag. It’s just as much using your face and body as a canvas for self-expression,” Hastings concludes. Yet, Magnus Hastings’ love for drag prevails, so don’t expect his next show to be about a ‘muscle Mary,’ because after more than a decade of shooting striking portraiture of drag queens, Hastings can only affirm that: “I kind of get it…”

photography. However, when confronted with all the stylists, publicists and PA’s of potential clients, he felt his style didn’t fit in it all. “Everyone wanted the softened down and edited version of themselves, and that’s far removed from my style,” Hastings reminisces about his first time in The City of Angels, “I love the work of photographers like David LaChapelle and David Bailey whose style is more direct and not nearly as softened down as many would want.” As a natural progression, Magnus turned yet again to drag queens where he could explore his own colorful characteristic. “I view it as a big campy party,” Magnus explains, “I want to bring a sense of fun and colorfulness to it. Drag is an art form.” So far Magnus Hastings has worked with a wide spectrum of drag queens from drag royalty and mainstream icons to new reality TV starlets including Bianca Del Rio, Courtney Act, Sharon Needles, Lady Bunny, DWV and Jackie Beat. And now his spectacular body of work is being exhibited at the OUT NYC, which was actually Hasting’s first pick for a gallery space. “I went to New York to find a gallery space and quickly found out they are either incredibly small, outrageously expensive or there’s a long wait,” Hastings tells us,

GOING FOR THE

GOAL By Kevin Kazzenacki

FENUXE.COM : 35

Most professionals are just beginning to hit their stride at 30. For athletes, however, 30 can mean it’s time to consider retirement. “There aren’t many rugby players still playing at 35,” says footballer Stuart Reardon who recently turned 31. “When I hit the big 3-0, I knew I had to start thinking about my next steps.” He saw his future as a physical trainer, but when three different scouts approached him about modeling, he figured he’d give it a try. “I’m pretty open-minded. I’m not embarrassed about taking my top off and showing it,” he smiles. “I thought I might as well see how far modeling could take me.” In two years, it’s led to a dozen high profile magazine spreads, a calendar, and now, his first endorsement deal. Reardon was recently named the face and body of the male skincare line, Axiom For Men. It wasn’t just his looks that got him the job. His strong advocacy for LGBT causes and his very vocal stance against Russia’s treatment of gays, brought him to the company’s attention. “We have similar goals,” says Reardon. “We’re both taking a stand for LGBT equality. It’s something I’m really passionate about and will continue to fight for until change is made.”

36 : June 5, 2014

Why have you been so vocal about gay rights? It is only fair that gay men and women have the same rights, freedoms and opportunities that I enjoy. These morals and values are important to me, and ones that I am trying to pass along to my son, who just turned nine. I am proud to be called a straight ally. How are you and Axiom For Men working to clean away hate? Axiom For Men and I share the opinion that people who are comfortable in their own skin have no reason to be threatened by others’ and the way they choose to look or live their lives. Individual confidence is the best remedy to removing intolerance and prejudice. Have you experienced anti-gay hate on the playing field? I’ve heard some anti-gay slurs on and off the field. The great majority of it is good-natured ribbing but that doesn’t excuse it in the slightest. I have had several chats with teammates over the years, explaining to them that what they said is not only uncool, but downright childish, mean and hurtful. In almost all cases the guy felt really bad and I could tell it was not their intention to hurt anyone’s feelings. They were simply using language that they never considered offensive. Most of the guys now understand that they have an influence on fans, especially the younger generation, and they are embracing the responsibility more. How would you feel if one of your teammates came out as gay? I certainly wouldn’t have a problem with it. How would the rest of your team feel? I truly believe my teammates would be fine with it. Professional athletics is about performance, integrity and being a true teammate. Sexual orientation is not a part of any of these things. FENUXE.COM : 37

Would you have any problems showering next to an out player? I get asked that a lot, as do most athletes. First off, it’s assumed that we all shower in one big room, which is often not the case at all. Secondly, have you seen a lot of professional athletes? (Laughing) There often isn’t anything much to stare at. To answer your question, I’d have no problem with it. Do you worry that by being such a vocal supporter, people may question your sexuality? Not in the slightest. My advocacy is one of the things I am most proud of. The worst thing that could happen is people think I’m gay. Why worry about that when I don’t believe being gay is a bad thing? How would you respond if a guy came on to you? I get hit on from time to time, and it’s incredibly flattering. I will worry when guys stop hitting on me. (Laughs) What is your favorite beauty product? My favorite Axiom For Men products are the hair removal cream, the shave cream, and the moisturizer. I use the shave cream every day for my face, and the hair removal cream is important to remove the fur on my legs as I don’t want to give my opponents something extra to grab onto when they tackle me. The good thing about both is neither fades my tattoo ink. If we use Axiom For Men, will we look like you? (Laughs) You don’t want to look like me. Axiom is about making you look your personal best. If we can all be secure in our own skin, the world will be a much better place. Learn more at AxiomForMen.com 38 : June 5, 2014

GemIni [MAY 21 – JUN. 22]

It seems like you’re finding pennies lying heads-up everywhere you go lately. It’s no wonder considering the great luck that the stars are showering on you right now. Take advantage of this good fortune in the beginning of June by getting ahead at work and furthering your meaningful relationships. You’ll be grateful that you did toward the end of the month as your luck starts to change.

CANCER [JUN. 21 – JUL. 22] Watch your emotions over the next few days as Venus and the Sun take on Mars. Everything from noisy neighbors to your friends questioning your loyalty are likely to crop up during this rocky time. Don’t let office gossip or frenemies get you down. This may not be the best time of the year for you, but there is little reason why you can’t turn things around on your own.

LEO [JUL. 23 – AUg. 22] The stars have put a lot of great opportunities in front of you over the last few months. Whether or not you fully utilized those opportunities remains to be seen. Mercury and Saturn are teaming up to make your social life a rewarding adventure over the next two weeks. However, remain cautious of the Sun and Neptune toward the end of the month. Your emotional and spiritual health will likely wane if neglected.

SAGITTARIUS [NOV. 23 – dEC. 21] If anyone should be travelling right now it should definitely be you! Ask the people who are important in your life to travel with you. Uranus will ensure that your pursuits are fruitful and rejuvenating. Skip the straight and narrow for a healthy dose of gay and fun, however, watch out as the Sun and Mars continue to battle it out. You certainly don’t want to step on any authority figure’s toes right now. It won’t end well for you.

Capricorn [dEC. 22 – JAN. 19] Work will prove to be taxing for no good reason over the next two weeks. Don’t deny yourself the chance to unwind at the end of the week by indulging in a vice here or there. Whether you’re downing a delicious cocktail alongside a new friend (and his rippling abs) or curled up in bed with a good book, it’s important that you take time to care for your own needs right now.

AQUARIUS

[JAN. 20 – FEB. 18] Getting antsy? The universe is likely to pull you in a thousand different directions over the next few weeks. Just hold on and enjoy the ride. Pay close attention to the activities you’re being drawn toward. Perhaps you should be focusing your attention there instead of your current pursuits. Can a favorite hobby or pastime become a career? If anyone can see through the murky water to find the pearl it will be you.

PISCES

virgo [AUg. 23 – SEpT. 22]

[FEB. 19 – MAR. 20] You might as well be rolling around around Atlanta blasting Snoop Dogg cause you’ve got your mind on your money and money is definitely on your mind! You’ve got the necessities covered, but there never seems to be enough cash left over to keep up with the gay Joneses. The universe is definitely tempting you to throw away all of your hard earned dough. Splurge a little here and there, but watch out for your long term financial health.

libra [SEpT. 23 – OCT. 22]

[MAR. 21 – ApR. 19] Sometimes that great idea you get late at night at the bar turns out to be a regrettable one night stand. However, sometimes it turns into creating Atlanta’s next must-have item. There is a business streak running with Aries this month that is sure to benefit business owners and entrepreneurs. Why can’t you be the next big thing on “Shark Tank”? You can also use some of this good energy to repair relationships that are hanging on by a thread.

Contemplating your next big move? It’s time to act. Patience is a virtue, but inaction can paralyze success. Uranus and Pluto are having a brawl that will last until November so you might as well go ahead and put your plan in action. You don’t have to know exactly where you’re going in order to take the first step. Keep your head down and focus on the nitty gritty until the bigger picture comes into focus.

Someone incredibly important in your life is going to become super upset about a personal relationship. If there isn’t anything you can do to help then give them a shoulder to cry on. Don’t take on their struggle yourself. The Sun and Saturn are in cahoots until mid-June which will afford you the perfect opportunity to move or explore a new part of the country.

scorpio

[OCT. 23 – NOV. 22] Sometimes the universe says no and you’re on a path toward hearing it loud and clear. Don’t let your desire to never back down keep you in a situation you’re not destined for. A close friend will look to you for guidance and emotional support in the upcoming weeks. You may not understand why your friend is so upset about the issue du jour, however, showing that you care means much more than piecing together their tangled web of pain. 44 : June May 8,5,2014 2014

ARIES

Taurus [ApR. 20 – MAY 20] Summer is near and you’re starting to feel it in your bones. Focus this energy in the gym so that your body will feel as rejuvenated as your mind this month. June stands to be a positive month for you, but only if you can avoid negative distractions and relationship turbulence. An unexpected major decision will consume your thoughts around June 19th. Lean on close friends and family if you feel pangs of doubt.

Holler Poodles!! I want to give a great big shout out to all the folks at Roy’s Hideaway for such an awesome Memorial Day Weekend. If you haven’t checked it out before, you must!! The people are so nice and the pool and clubhouse are lots of fun! They have RV sites, tent sites, bunk houses and a great kitchen open on the weekends. Tell them Mary Edith Pitts sent you and they’ll charge you an extra $5.00. LOL Squirrel! I don’t know if I’ve ever written a movie review but I’ve just seen two movies that moved me in vastly different ways. I guess I need to start a gay rating system. How about something like this? HeY is a 1 and HeYYYYY is a 5 and the best. Holllerrrr! “The Normal Heart” by Larry Kramer and directed by Ryan Murphy is an unflinching look at the beginning of the AIDS crisis in all of its horror, tragedy and outrage. Mark Ruffalo and Matt Bomer give heart breaking award-worthy performances that left me literally weeping. I encourage everyone to see this movie--especially our young gay people because it is our history. It reminds me of the quote: “Those who ignore history are destined to repeat it.” Mary Edith Pitts gives it a HeYYYYY! Last night I saw Maleficent with Angelina Jolie and was blown away in the most surprising way. Because of the poor critical reviews I had read on Flixster, I decided I would probably wait to see it. But my friend insisted. I don’t want to spoil it for you, but you MUST see this movie. Think “Wicked!” Told from a different point of view, the film is exceptional in every way! It reminds me not to judge someone based on what I’ve read or heard from others. Angelina’s performance is subtle at times and can blow you away with just a look. The costumes are sumptuous as are the sets, lighting and makeup. Oh, did I mention makeup? Having worked in film I have to say this was exquisite. The prosthetics are imperceptible. But when all is said and done, the story is what will get you. It is told beautifully and will hopefully challenge you in a different way! Mary Edith Pitts gives it a HeYYYYY! Let me know what you think about these and if there are other movies that are a must see! Love and lashes,

A GAY DAD'S FATHER'S DAY By Hans Hirschi really a stretch goal. That all changed, when civil unions were first introduced. All of a sudden, the prospect of family moved from the realm of illusions to the land of possibilities. My husband Alex and I had been thinking about becoming parents since before we met. It was a prerequisite for any future partner of mine as I had a real wish to start a family. As Alex is twelve years my junior, he felt it important to first finish his studies and get his career going before we explored our parenting options. We started slowly, with two exchange students, before finally trying to become full-time parents.

Becoming a father once had this dreamy quality to it. I was seven years old when I first knew the names of my future kids: Sascha, Pascal and a third that got lost in the passage of time. There was also a wife in that picture somewhere. As a kid, the concept of marriage and sexuality was nothing to be concerned with. Later, when I realized that I was gay, fatherhood became an illusion, something I knew I’d never achieve. In the nineteen eighties, finding a boyfriend was the height of gay aspirations. Living together was

50 : June 5, 2014

We first opted for foster care. We were evaluated, probed, prodded and finally approved as foster parents just before Christmas of 2011. Yet, due to the raging homophobia still permeating society, we were never awarded a child to foster. Desperately, we resorted to surrogacy and in March last year, our son Sascha was born. Since then, we’ve been asked countless times what it means to be gay parents. It’s a difficult question. Being a “gay” parent per se does not mean much to me, my husband or even Sascha. It seems to have more of an impact on the people around us as they witness two men raising happy and healthy children.

I’ve come to believe that gays as parents may result in shifting attitudes toward the LGBT community as a whole. So much of homophobia is based on fear of the unknown. The more people see LGBT families, the less they will fear us or listen to hate speech from politicians and religious leaders. Gay parenting may one day reduce prejudice; make it easier for gays to come out and for gay teens to face bullies. Every now and then, there are people out there who will frown upon seeing us with our son. We recently had such an encounter. But more and more, they are becoming the exception rather than the rule. For me, Father’s Day isn’t about getting a tie from my son (heaven forbid, as I don’t wear them). The day is to celebrate Alex and me, and out united contribution in raising our son, Sascha. Just as my dad once joined my brother and I in celebrating mom, paying to take her our to lunch and helping us make dinner and breakfast in bed, so too will we do for our boy. Happy Father’s Day, gay dads. Hans M. Hirschi is the author of “Living The Rainbow: A Gay Family Triptych”, a trilogy of three novels that offer a mirror on today’s LGBT community - the first generation able to legally marry and have children. Each tale offers a glimpse at how modern gay families live their lives, the unique worries they have and how they deal with them. “Living The Rainbow: A Gay Family Triptych” is available now, digitally and as a softcover boxed set, on Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble (Nook) and at selected local book stores.
