FENUXE 4.25.2013 EDITOR’S

NOTE

I admit — I didn’t expect the response that followed my last editor’s note. The many calls, texts, emails, and Facebook messages from readers, fellow businesses, and friends alike paid testament to the beauty of our community and the fact that we’re all going through this together. We are an incredibly diverse community, but we share so many common struggles.

A couple of people asked what happened with my family after my last editor’s note was published, so I wanted to give you a quick update: My mom is really working on her own emotions in coming to accept who I am. Last week, she called me giggling and super excited. She works with hearing aids and programs them for patients. Most hearing aids now will warn a patient with a male voice when their battery is getting low. A new patient walked into her clinic last week, and my mother picked up on the fact that she was a lesbian due to her referencing her partner. Instead of programming a male voice to inform her that her battery was low, she downloaded and programmed a female voice. She told me the patient beamed when she discovered what my mom had done and my mother took so much pride in being sensitive to her needs. It’s a small victory, but I am so proud of her and the steps she is taking. I also want to give another quick shout out to FENUXE reader Erica (and her gay roomies)! You guys rock and thank you for reading! Don’t listen to the haters, Erica, you don’t need their negativity in your life. Keep your head up high because it sounds like you’re an amazing woman. Keep us in the loop with everything as your new venture progresses! As always, I really appreciate and enjoy hearing from all of you. This magazine is for you, Atlanta! Our whole team here at FENUXE will be out and about at so many of the great events coming up over the next two weeks. The Atlanta HRC Gala Dinner is May 4, with featured speaker and award recipient Matthew Morrison. It’s always a major highlight of the year, and this year looks like it will be one of the best. I’m also super excited about the Cinco de Mayo celebration at Las Margaritas! If you’ve never been, you’re in for an awesome time! I’ll see you all there! These next two weeks are all about HAVING FUN!! So, sit back, relax, grab a drink and enjoy this issue! See you in two weeks!

GETTING THERE Your luggage is not only a safe and convenient way in which to lug your belongings around the world, it is also an obvious way to express your style on the go. Because as they say: It is not your destination, but getting there that is important!

FASHION

CARRY-ON IN FASHION This is the bag you will carry around at the airport and on the plane, so essentially it is much more important than your suitcase. Invest in a bag that you will not only love to carry around, but which — on a more practical note — can store those extra vacation shopping items along with all the essentials for a long flight: iPad, iPod, books, eReader, magazines, a sweater for a chilly cabin, and emergency toiletries. Bottega Veneta Espresso Vetrificature Nabuk Tote, $3,150 STYLE ON WHEELS When you think about it, your suitcase need not be as stylish as your carry-on, because you (or others) don’t see it after check-in. However, it should be strong enough to withstand the trials and tribulations of modern baggage handling. So invest, but don’t go overboard or you’ll start your vacation being sad about all the scratches on your new suitcase. Samsonite Cruisair Bold 29” Spinner, $560 Courtesy of Dockers

TRAVELING

THE HIPSTER HOLD-ALL Another very hip way to carry your belongings around is the backpack, which has made a huge comeback as a style accessory. Apart from the fact that it can hold everything necessary for a long flight, you carry it ergonomically correct on your back while looking trés fashionable. Herschel Little America Backpack, $90

John Hilton, Fashion Contributor

CREATE YOUR OWN SPACE We have all been there: sitting across from/in front of/behind that crying baby/drunken loud passenger/giggling teenager. Instead of getting all worked up by the interference in your flight, why not just cancel any unwanted noise? You will be in your own little calm space and arrive full of positive vibes. Sony Digital Noise Canceling Headphones, $199

In Style ▲ ▲ ▲

Summer is upon us, and so is the urge to get out there and explore the world! And no matter your destination, you always want to travel and arrive in style. 14 : April 25, 2013

ARRIVE STYLISHLY When traveling, you know you don’t want to be that person in the little-too-snug tracksuit or one-piece fleece get-up with only comfort and no style in mind. Nor would you want to dress up in your Sunday best and experience how everything sits a little too uncomfortably tight for that hours-long flight. Your clothes should be stylish enough to earn you that potential upgrade but also comfortable enough to make your flight pleasant. Here are the ground rules for traveling and arriving in style.

FENUXE LOVES:

1. WEAR IT LONG You know how chilly those flights can get, so wear long pants and bring something to wear over your T-shirt — like a sweatshirt or a jacket. Dockers Alpha Khaki (assorted colors), $68 2. BRING ONE BAG You should bring just one carry-on if you check your suitcase. Don’t be that person with the carry-on, the personal item, and all the shopping bags. Boss Green Meevian Performance-Blend Top Handle Bag, $245 3. WEAR COMFY SHOES — AND SOCKS! There is no need to slip into shiny patent leather dress shoes for your trip — you will probably think of nothing but getting out of them! Wear comfortable shoes that are easy to slip in and out of — and wear socks so the rest of the cabin won’t have to smell your feet! Converse Jack Purcell Sneakers White, $60

4. STAY FRESH & HYDRATED You know you need to drink plenty of fluids on a flight — and so does your skin. Bring a little grooming kit containing a moisturizer, deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, and lip balm. You will look and smell so good once you get there. LAB Series Pro LS All-In-One Face Treatment, 1.7 oz., $29

5. WEAR A TEE A shirt always looks nice, but unless you sit up very straight to prevent wrinkles, you will arrive much less pressed than when you got on the plane. A T-shirt or polo is much more comfortable; it will not wrinkle and can be just as stylish. American Eagle Outfitters Legend V-Neck Tee Voltage Pink, $15.95 6. WEAR A COAT Whichever state you arrive in, a good jacket or coat can cover up most things from B.O. to slept-in clothing. Make sure you fold it nicely so you will not pull it out from the overhead bin all wrinkled. TopMan Stone Trench Coat, $200

We love versatility, so these shorts have definitely caught our eyes because they are reversible! One side is a nice chambray and the other is a pattern, so depending on how bold you want to look, you can wear them multiple ways. The pockets are simply transformed from back patch pockets to side front pockets with welt back pockets when reversed. Cool and clever in one! Dockers Relaxed Fit Reversible Short Maritime/ True Ecru, $68

EVENT

PARTY WITH YOUR PET TO BENEFIT

PALS Katherine Tippins, Managing Editor

If you are a pet parent, you can probably think of nothing that would make you give up your fur baby ... but what if you were diagnosed with an illness, the medical bills piled up, and you could no longer afford to feed, medicate, and otherwise care for your pet? It’s almost unthinkable, but this terrible situation happens to people in our community, and that’s why the nonprofit organization Pets Are Loving Support (PALS) exists. Their slogan is “Help a friend keep a friend,” and that’s exactly what they do.

“PALS provides veterinary care and food for the pets of people who are suffering with terminal or life-threatening illnesses,” William Campbell, owner of Piedmont Bark, tells FENUXE. “I think it’s a great service for a lot of people who otherwise would be forced to give their pets up because they just can't afford medicine or they can't afford vaccinations or food for their pet. It serves a vital need.” One way funds are raised for this vital need is the annual Pet Cotillion held at Piedmont Bark in Midtown’s 18 : April 25, 2013

Amsterdam Walk. Campbell says last year’s event raised $16,000, and 100 percent of the proceeds went to PALS. At the event, the Pet Cotillion contestants will be paraded across the stage in their costumes, but this year, unlike the Pet Cotillions of the past, guest pets will be allowed to strut their stuff as well. “Costumes are optional, but people will be able to parade all dogs who come to the event across the stage in their spring finery, or whatever people decide to dress their dogs in,” Campbell says. “So this time we’re going to make it sort of open, sort of like a May Day, or sort of a spring break event.” In addition to the onstage pet parade, the silent auction at the Pet Cotillion benefits PALS. Kevin Bryant, executive director of PALS, says the silent auction will “have everything ranging from gym memberships, to hotel stays, a Savannah Bed and Breakfast getaway, in-home

dinners for eight from Dennis Dean Catering, along with many other items.” Campbell adds that the silent auction prizes also include roundtrip airline tickets and restaurant meals. Campbell explains what attendees can expect for the price of their ticket: “We have DJ Pat Scott, regular DJ at the Eagle. Great food. Should be a lot of fun — an afternoon cocktail hour where people can bring their dogs. Diageo is our liquor sponsor, so it’s all an open bar. Dennis Dean is catering, so people should come over for a simple fee for food, music, a good time.”

According to Bryant, the organization is in great need of funds this year: “Basically we just need the community to come out and support the event. With donations at an alltime low and the fact that we lost a $35,000 grant this year due to grantor funding issues, we are really in need of help to insure that no pet is put on a waiting list that is in need, nor our services scaled back. Each attendee who purchases a ticket and comes to the event will help make this happen.” Owners can enter their pet in the contest by registering him or her at palsatlanta. org. A photo of the pet is required for registration. Once the pet is registered, his or her photo is placed in a slideshow on the PALS homepage. Site visitors can then click on the pet’s photo to vote for him or her. Each vote is $1, and votes can be accepted in $1, $5, $10, $20, $50, $100, or $250 increments. So, if a pet receives a $20 voting amount, that pet gets 20 votes. The pet with the most votes will become the 2013 spokespet, acting as the face of PALS in all its marketing and advertising campaigns for the year. Owners who have entered their pet in the Pet Cotillion can monitor their pet’s amount of votes on the PALS website. “On the PALS website they have different symbols. Whether it is a fire hydrant, a collar, or a bone, the symbols identify different dollar

amounts, so owners can keep track of where their dog is and if their dog is in the lead or not. But not until the actual event do they know the final tally,” says Campbell. And according to Campbell, that final tally can vary drastically on the day of the event from the day before: “We’ve had situations where the night before someone gave over $1,000 and the guy ended up winning. They knew it was neck and neck and they just pulled it out in the last minute.” PALS will also contact the owners of Pet Cotillion competitors to let them know their voting status. “At the end of April, we start sending emails to all the contestant owners letting them know the three top pets in fundraising so that they can really push their friends and family to vote,” says Bryant.

Following the Pet Cotillion, an afterparty will be held at 10th & Piedmont, where there will be a raffle, drink specials, and a suggested donation for PALS at the door.

NIGHTLIFE

Cinco

de Mayo AT LAS MARGARITAS: CELEBRATING CULTURE AND HELPING KIDS CARNIVAL STYLE Katherine Tippins, Managing Editor

¿Qué está pasando en Cinco de Mayo en Atlanta? (What’s happening on Cinco de Mayo in Atlanta?) Las Margaritas Latin restaurant will host its third Cinco de Mayo fiesta, and Oscar “Papi” Valdivieso is making it happen. “Last year it was to be just [an outdoor event], but then it became an outdoor concert,” says Papi, Las Margaritas’ owner and promoter. “This year, not only am I doing the outdoor concert, I’m doing a sort of Carnival.” Now in its third year, the annual event has evolved into something spectacular with amped up entertainment that represents a variety of Latin cultures, truly worthy of being called an “extravaganza.” This year, the Carnivalesque festivities will include something for everyone with lots of music and movement: the Willie Ziavino Latin band live on stage, Brazilian samba dancers, Spanish flamenco dancers, and of course tribal and pop beats from some of the biggest Latin DJs in the area: DJ Karlitos and DJ Chiruco.

Oscar “Papi” Valdivieso

22 : April 25, 2013

The event will open and close with the DJs spinning, but all throughout the event, prizes such as Carnival masks and Cinco de Mayo T-shirts will be given away. Special guest Jesus De La Cruz (“La Panocha”) will make an appearance in full fabulousness, and MC Mariah Balenciaga, aka Mariah Successful from season 3 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” will be working the crowd. “There’s also going to be a mariachi band walking around, so basically it’s going to be an outside entertainment Carnival extravaganza. Live it up!” says Papi. This fiesta is not just partying for the sake of partying; Papi has set it up to benefit important local charity organizations. “Two years ago, our event benefitted the Red Cross and we raised $2,000. Last year, it was Joining Hearts and we raised $2,500,” Papi tells FENUXE. The 2013 event will benefit two organizations that help house underprivileged and disadvantaged LGBT children: CHRIS Kids and Lost-n-Found Youth, Inc. In the U.S., Cinco de Mayo became popular in the 1860s, and Chicano activists of the 1960s raised more awareness of the holiday, eventually leading to the throwdown fiestas and colorful parades we enjoy today. Cinco de Mayo in the U.S. is a celebration of Latin culture and heritage, recognized with music, dancing, and cervezas, all of which and more will be at Las Margaritas on Sunday!

Cinco de Mayo: Did you know?

Cinco de Mayo was originally celebrated in Mexico as the anniversary of the Battle of Puebla in 1862, when the Mexican army won an unlikely victory over Napoleon III’s French forces. In the Mexican state of Puebla, Cinco de Mayo is referred to as El día de la Batalla de Puebla (The day of the Battle of Puebla). Cinco de Mayo is not a Mexican national holiday, but it is an official state holiday in Puebla. It is also different from Mexico’s Independence day, which is celebrated on Sept. 16.

URBAN CULTURE Ways to Play at

Tybee Gay Days Berlin Sylvestre, Staff Writer

If your starting point is Atlanta, a four-hour road trip will take you to one of the most adorable, gay-friendly islands off the Georgia coast. With warm white sand, plentiful eateries, and a darling array of Mom and Pop shops, Tybee Island is a must — especially during May 3-5, which is when the island is holding its own version of Pride: Tybee Gay Days. What rocks so much about Tybee is that it’s not the crowded “Panama City-esque” hotspot. There aren’t hordes of unwieldy teenagers sneaking Bud Ice into red Solo cups and acting like fools, ruining what could’ve been a really chill vacation. Tybee Island is small, quaint, and more for the laid-

Marlin Monroe’s 404 Butler Ave. Tybee Island, Ga. 31328 (912) 786-4745 26 : April 25, 2013

back gays who appreciate a fantastic getaway that forgoes the chaos and drama that comes with the more clichéd places to party. Tybee Island is 2.7 square miles. You can rent a bicycle for $15 a day and never worry about traffic or parking while you’re out and about. Even with its small size, it’s easy to find a secluded area by the water for some quiet-time smoochin’. Now! What goes down at Tybee Gay Days? The festival kicks off with a meet-up at Marlin Monroe’s at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 3. This is your chance to scope some hotties and make your introductions while sipping cocktails until 5 p.m.

Tybee Social Club 1311 Butler Ave. Tybee Island, Ga. 31328 (912) 472-4044

After that, you’ve got some time to head back to camp and freshen up, because from 6:30 to 10 p.m., North Beach Grill, a beachfront restaurant, welcomes you to get cozy while enjoying a meal with your stiff drinks. (FYI: The first 250 folks to show up get a mystery swag bag filled with stuff from Tybee Gay Days’ sponsors.) After 10:30, when you’re good and warmed up, head over to the Tybee Social Club and party like it’s 2999 until 3 a.m. Once you nurse your hangover for a few hours on the beach Saturday morning, Marlin Monroe’s wants you back for round two at 6:30 p.m. Their “White Party” is a highenergy dance party that raises money for HIV/AIDS. Highend, ocean-fresh appetizers and champagne are yours for the taking. All they ask is that you wear white and bring $40 for the charity. DJs will be spinning throughout the night, giving you a chance to show just how well you can cut a rug in flip-flops. If the White Party isn’t your bag, how’s the Big Deck Party sound? The Tybee Social Club is throwing a shindig that gives partial proceeds to Savannah Pride. For $20, you’re gonna get hors d’oeuvres and drink specials, and possibly find out why it’s called the Big Deck Party. The lights come on at 3 a.m., so you’ve got plenty of time to meet Mr. Right Now and invite him to tomorrow’s Gay Days closing events ... or back to your place, whatever.

Grille, Fannie’s on the Beach, and the Tybee Social Club are offering brunches that feature dishes fresh from the coast in environments that welcome you to gay it up. But for right now, you really need to plan on where you’re staying. (Places fill up fast.) The absolute best option, if you’re going with a group, is to snag one of the copious rental homes for the weekend. The island is so small that you can walk to the beach from any one of them and they’re all beautifully maintained. If you don’t need all the room, I’d recommend the Beachside Colony Hotel, where (in spite of the name) you’ll be renting a condominium. Savannah is only 20 minutes away, so if you’d like to set up camp among the Spanish moss, Savannah’s Inn at Ellis Square is a beautiful, gay-friendly place to crash. Savannah is also home to the always-hoppin’ gay bar Club One, which is especially packed during Gay Days. The bar is multi-storied, so there’s plenty of room to boogie down. The world famous Lady Chablis (who did a fantastic job in “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil”) will be performing on May 4, so that’d be a nice catch.

On Sunday, the last day of the festival, CoCo’s Sunset

There are plenty of reasons to head to Tybee any time of year, but their Gay Days tops the list. For more about the festival, visit gaysavannah. com/tybee-gay-days and make your plans for the best springtime “Pride” event in Georgia.

XPLORE

PRIDE on the Beach? Pensacola, PREaCH!

THURSday, May 23 8 p.m. - 3 a.m.: Bikini and Board Shorts Foam Party - Kick off your sandals while kicking off the Memorial Day Weekend on Quietwater Beach. Events range from comedy and drag shows to gogo dancers and (of course) foam and froth! Capt'n Fun Beach Club 400 Quietwater Beach Road, Pensacola, Fla. 32561 SaTURday, May 25

Berlin Sylvestre, Staff Writer

THURSday, May 23

Pensacola Memorial Day Weekend (their version of Pride) is held in one of the most beautiful places in all the land: the Gulf Coast. Crystalline waters, smooth white sand, and an estimated 150,000 super-sexy men and women from around the country to show some skin ... and to show what it can do. According to Ted McCrary, general manager of Emerald City, Pensacola’s Memorial Day Weekend “probably has a 50/50 ratio of men to women,” making it the perfect place for just about anyone to live it up. He does say, however, that the bars pack out with mostly men. Lucky you, gentlemen!

9 p.m. - 3 a.m.: Stripdown at Emerald City - Pensacola’s busiest gay club will keep the boom in the main room, as DJ Dewight Barkley bangs out top 40 remixes. A few drag numbers will be sprinkled in at random times, but for the most part, this is a high-energy dance party to get the weekend moving.

So much is going on, but we’ve put together a quick itinerary of a few of the goings-on you might wanna check out, so grab your calendar, pack your swimsuits, and let your boss know you’re unavailable Memorial Day Weekend.

FYI:

For the live concert crowd, Pensacola Unleashed is a four-day music festival packed with names you’d recognize, The Indigo Girls being among them this year. The VIP passes are already sold out, if that tells you anything about the jam fest, but general admission tickets ($100 for all four days) are still ripe for the pickin’. 28 : April 25, 2013

SUNday, May 26 8 p.m. - 3 a.m.: Sexacola’s Official White Party - Someone’s gotta throw a White Party at gay festivals, and this year Sexacola’s got it covered. Exotic pole dancer Karissa has the skills to keep the ladies live. With guitarist Lindsey Hinkle performing and DJ Liz Owen on the decks, the White Party will ensure a fine time to grind. Capt'n Fun Beach Club 400 Quietwater Boardwalk, Pensacola, Fla. 32561

10 p.m. - 4 a.m.: WAVE Beach Party - DJ Roland Belmares, known from San Fran to Amsterdam, is fully equipped with everything he’ll need to keep your tide high. If the beach party is anything like it has been in the past, you can expect everything from fire-dancers to hulahotties shaking up the surf in the midst of a mesmeric lightshow. Known to many as “the place to be” during Memorial Day Weekend, the promoters are always sure to live up to the hype. Park East, Pensacola Beach, Fla. 32561

MONday, May 27 9 p.m. - 3 a.m.: Drink and Drown at Emerald City - Every year, as a thank you to the visitors who were able to stay an extra day, the club rewards them with Drink and Drown. For $15, you can drink all the well drinks and draft beer you can handle. All other beverages are served at half price. Patrons will be treated to two full drag shows, if they can keep up!

Rí Rá atlanta hen I walk into a Midtown restaurant and plunk down at the bar, I’m used to an attractive bartender elbowing up to me with a “What can get for ya?” What I’m not used to is an “Evenin’. Have you been looked after, lass?” delivered in the sexy brogue of a handsome Irish barkeep. I suppose I shouldn’t have been so surprised, but Rí Rá is an Irish pub and they’re not playin’ around with authenticity, whether it’s the draught (draft) selection or the décor — but most notably the food.

W

Though Rí Rá is versatile and offers a few menu choices that aren’t expressly Irish, I was given a culinary tour of Ireland by executive chef Kelly Sollinger. Their Pan-Seared Potato Cake app (a “boxty,” as those on the Emerald Isle call it) is a savory starter with a crispy outer coat and creamy, cheddary interior. Topped with mild arugula, smoky bacon, local tomato, and a balsamic reduction, the “wee patties” whet the appetite beautifully. The Smoked Salmon (also an appetizer) has a unique texture borne of the smoking process that removes the overtly “fishy” taste of salmon, but leaves enough behind to complement the pickled red onion, capers, sour cream, and brown bread crostini that line the plate.

30 : April 25, 2013

“Our house-brined beef brisket is a 14-day labor of love,” Chef Kelly says of Rí Rá’s Corned Beef and Cabbage. “It was all trial and error, but now our pride and joy.” The impossibly tender beef slips between your teeth and the Bearnaise he’s chosen is light. Though steamed, the Savoy cabbage retains its “bite.” The soda bread (made with baking soda — not Coca-Cola) is thick, “toothy,” with a homemade flavor that shows off its whole grain base. The soda bread (served with Kerrygold butter, of course) pairs gorgeously with Harp Lager. Another Irish classic, the Fish & Chips, is a must. Served with tartar sauce and Irish remoulade, the ale-battered haddock is light, tempura-like, and the “chips” (or fries, as we call them) are cut by hand. “We went through many potato variations so that they wouldn’t be your average fry,” Kelly says. “We wanted you to actually taste the potato.” Every inch of space inside the pub has that classic Irish pub-feel. It’s dimly lit (but not overly so), has faded pictures of Irish nobles and notables along the walls, and the “heavy” feel of an era when buildings were made of natural materials built to last for centuries. Three separate dining rooms are equipped with a variety of tables to accommodate parties of all sizes. The areas are separated by a few steps, but are clearly set apart. Boisterous, modern music fills the space in the first dining area — more of a bar space — where the lion's share of activity happens. The second level is more intimate. It's quieter, easier to maintain “inside voice” conversations. The back area has another gorgeous bar and is probably best for

watching a game of football (or soccer, as we like to call it). Rí Rá had some pieces shipped in from Harbour Bar, one of the oldest bars in Ireland, making the authenticity even more genuine. I could practically live in their roomy, impeccably clean bathrooms. The stall doors are heavy, nicely carved wood with gorgeous brass handles. Every detail, from the large mirrors, beautifully scented soap, and thick hand towels is testament to the amount of time Rí Rá spent designing the place. Rí Rá’s name is derived from the phrase “Rí Rá agus ruaile buaile," which, according to our server Eoghan (pronounced Owen), roughly translates: "Devilment, good fun, and any sociable activity that improves with fine food, a nice pint of Guinness, or dram of uisce beatha, which is Irish for whiskey.” The draft beer list is extensive, but includes Harp Lager, Guinness, Smithwicks, Magners Irish Cider (all Irish), and some choice European brews such as Stella, Newcastle, Heineken, Hoegaarden, and Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier.

As long as Chef Kelly helms the kitchen and those comely Irish lads keep the pints flowing, I’m sure Rí Rá will establish itself as a Midtown staple.

Rí Rá Atlanta 1080 Peachtree St NE #1, Atlanta, Ga. 30309 (404) 477-1700 rira.com/atlanta

To close out the dinner, I was presented with their Sticky Toffee Pudding, a moist, datefilled sponge cake drizzled with toffee sauce and topped with a lovely vanilla custard. It was a truly flawless finish to a delectable experience. FENUXE.COM : 31

Legal Minute with Randy Fry

What happens if someone wrecks your ride …

and your life?

Steven Cayton, Contributor

Mr. Fry worked for three litigation firms before opening his own in 2011. He is solely dedicated to representing individuals and families who have been hurt as a result of the negligence of others. He’s handled more than 2,000 claims, which include automobile collisions, trucking wrecks, bicycle incidents, on-the-job injuries, and other incidents where someone is injured through no fault of their own. He has never represented insurance companies and never will.

What are the most frequent mistakes made by a client before they call you? Often, injured individuals are contacted soon after an incident by a representative from the insurance company that represents the at-fault party. The insurance company representative will often seek to record a conversation with the injured individual, ask the injured individual to sign a medical release, and will even many times offer to settle for an insufficient amount of money even before medical treatment is even completed, which of course is intended to quickly release the insurance company without concern for the injured individual. I also typically receive at least one call a week from someone asking if I can "undo" a settlement even though the individual has settled their claim. For the reasons above, and too many more to list here, it is absolutely essential that an injured individual contact a personal injury trial attorney as soon as possible following an incident, after, of course, emergency medical care is sought if needed.

36 : April 25, 2013

Is it ever wrong to simply exchange information with the other driver after an accident and try to avoid calling the police? Individuals involved in an automobile collision should always contact the police, no matter how inconvenient it may seem at the time. Even if no injuries are involved, having the police come to the scene and complete a report protects you, should the other party later claim that he/she is injured and/or that you are at fault for the incident.

package will then be forwarded to the insurance company with the goal of achieving a fair settlement on your behalf. If that is not achieved due to a difference in opinion with the insurance company regarding the value of a case (i.e. what a jury would ultimately award), then only at that point is a lawsuit filed. It is important to note that in Georgia, one's claim for personal injuries must be settled within two years from the date of the accident, or a lawsuit must be filed by that twoyear mark.

personal injury attorneys do not litigate and try cases when an offer from the insurance company is not fair and reasonable. The insurance companies know which attorneys do, and do not, try cases in our courts. This of course makes a very significant difference in offers made to injured individuals. I am proud to be among the personal injury trial attorneys that do try cases without fear or intimidation in the pursuit of justice for my clients.

When does an injury from an accident become worthy of a lawsuit? Injured individuals are often confused as to the terms "claim" versus a "lawsuit.” After someone is injured, medical care is the next step, which could be as little as weeks, or years. However, as soon as most medical care is completed, your attorney will assemble a demand package, which includes a request for medical expenses, financial losses from time missed from work, and compensation for quality of life. This demand

Any other pointers or advice you would give to people? I always recommend that individuals seeking legal representation for a personal injury matter give much thought and consideration when deciding whom they wish to be represented by. I, like most personal injury attorneys, work on a contingency basis, meaning that we are only paid if a successful outcome is achieved. There are many fine personal injury attorneys in the state of Georgia; however, many people do not realize that most

Plan Ahead for a

Summer Vacation with Your Pet Eugene Salas, Editorial Intern

With spring weather here, vacations and getaways for the summer are being formulated faster than pollen can gather. You can't wait to take your pug to a breezy California beach or to the lively Spanish city of Barcelona. However, traveling with pets can sometimes be a little more difficult than imagined. While domestic travel is easy enough, international travel takes more research and preparation. Otherwise, you might end up having to leave puggy with grandma.

Traveling can be stressful for everyone, but you can take a few steps to help prepare your pets for their next excursion. Regardless of if you’re driving or flying, don’t feed your pets a large meal before you embark on your trip. It can easily make them sick midway. If you do feed them, try to focus on a light meal. Also, don’t use a sedative on your pet if you’re flying. The change in altitude can cause an adverse reaction to medication and is strongly discouraged. Whether it be for the car, plane, or hotel, you’ll need to transport your pet safely and securely. The crate should be made of metal, including the locks and doors. Lining the crate with towels or soft blankets helps to make it comfortable and smell like home. Your pet should also have enough space so that he or she can comfortably sit up and lay down. When traveling internationally, it’s best to start preparing eight or nine months in advance so that you have time to process all your paperwork and get the required vaccinations. Paperwork and vaccination requirements are going to vary depending on to which country you’re traveling; a visit to your vet should get everything squared away. Sometimes health certificates need to be issued and endorsed by the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service Veterinary Services, which can be mailed or done through appointment at their area office. If you’re flying to your destination, make sure to look up the pet policy of your airline. Most airlines will allow you to have a pet with you in the cabin as carry-on, but they may have to be in a container that fits beneath the seats, and only a limited number of pets are allowed in the cabin at once. It can cost anywhere from $250 to $400 for a roundtrip pet fee. Other times, airlines are able to transport pets in the cargo bay as well. The size and weight limit for your animal depends on the aircraft. Make sure to call a representative of the airline or look up their pet policies online. All rates for pets as carry-on and cargo are readily available on your airline’s website.

Hot Spot Quickies

If all else fails, there are plenty of pet hotels in Atlanta that will pamper your pooches with a suite of their own. Or, you could always surprise your family members with a visitor.

Europe: ISO compatible microchip implanted before rabies vaccination, tapeworm treatment, and a “pet passport” from your vet. The passport is good for all countries affiliated with the EU.

38 : April 25, 2013

Costa Rica: Import permit required for animals in cargo, not for cabin transport. Rabies vaccination up to date and health certificate endorsed by Veterinary Services.

Japan: Advance notification to Animal Quarantine Service, identifying microchip, rabies vaccination, 180 day wait after blood test before traveling, certificate of export. If done properly, quarantine can be under 12 hours.

Australia: Serval and savannah cat prohibited. Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, Japanese Tosa, Pit Bull Terrier, American Pit Bull, and all hybrids are not permitted. Animals need to have microchip implant, rabies vaccination, blood sampling, and health certificate. Minimum quarantine is 30 days.

Now, I’m not gonna lecture you on unsafe sex. (OK, yes I am.) Just because an STD isn’t placed in the lineup of the most common for their corresponding cities doesn’t mean it’s not there. Let’s just wrap it up right now by saying, “Wrap it up” ... as in “Put a (rubber) ring on it.” The stranger in a strange land may very well be fantastic, but blistered balls? No me gusta. Tell you what: Go ahead and Google some images of these infections. That should do it.

Urogenital trichomoniasis: An irritation inside the penis, an inflamed urethra, and penile discharge or burning after urination or ejaculation.

Granuloma inguinale: Small, painless nodules that appear on the penis that, if untreated, will burst, creating open, fleshy lesions that ooze.

There are only two STDs that can be prevented through a vaccination: HPV and Hepatitis (A and B). Most STDs can be cured through antibiotics and proper treatment, but Hepatitis B, genital herpes, the human papilloma virus (HPV), and HIV are not among them. If you haven’t already, the CDC recommends you get vaccinated for measles/mumps/rubella (MMR), diphtheria/pertussis/ tetanus (DPT), poliovirus, both Hepatitis A and B, typhoid vaccine, and rabies before traveling anywhere in the world.

What country does your sign’s attitude represent?

Taurus [aPR. 20 – May 20]

Your pride often makes you seem haughty, but you really just know what you don’t like and have no problem letting people know. You’re France.

GemIni [May 21 – JUN. 22]

Your large base of friends can often land you in hot water when they’re not getting along so well and try dragging you in. You’re China.

CANCER [JUN. 21 – JUl. 22]

People know you by name, coastal crab, but your shelled-up nature still makes you kind of a mystery. You’re Monaco.

LEO [JUl. 23 – aUg. 22]

You can be a little intimidating, but the respect you command has placed you in key positions of power with people who matter. You’re Russia.

virgo [aUg. 23 – SEPT. 22] You don’t prefer the limelight, but you do like hanging around extroverts who ham it up so you can watch the crazy in action. You’re Belgium.

libra [SEPT. 23 – OCT. 22]

Your balanced nature is excellent for weighing the pros and cons of associating with certain people, keeping any chaos at bay. You’re Sweden.

scorpio [OCT. 23 – NOV. 22]

You’ve seen more pain than a lot of us, so when someone threatens you, your “Never again!” dukes are up faster than most. You’re Israel.

SAGITTARIUS [NOV. 23 – dEC. 21]

You’re friendly as all get-out, but people shouldn’t expect you to open up completely until they’re in your guarded inner circle. You’re Ireland.

Capricorn [dEC. 22 – JaN. 19]

You’re known for kicking back and enjoying the finer things in life, but you honestly have to watch that budget, boo. You’re Greece.

AQUARIUS [JaN. 20 – FEB. 18] You handle your business excellently. (That’s probably because you stay out of other peoples’ drama.) You’re Switzerland.

PISCES [FEB. 19 – MaR. 20]

You’re perfect when it comes to helping stressed-out pals “just get away from it all.” For that, you’re loved by many. You’re Australia.

ARIES [MaR. 21 – aPR. 19]

You might not be the most productive at the moment, but with those leadership skills, you’re known as the comeback kid. You’re the United States.

Holler Poodles!! Holler Poodles! Many of you have been asking me for makeup tips for quite some time so I am pleased to partner with Norcostco Atlanta Costume to bring you a series of drag makeup tips. With the popularity of drag at an all time high, it’s nice to see a business specifically reach out to our community to accommodate specific needs. As the old saying goes ladies... “Cover girl does not cover boys!” I have to say I was pleasantly surprised when I entered the store after a very long absence. I was greeted by friendly, knowledgeable associates and was blown away by the new selection of products available. I’m talking MAJOR! They are not only equipped with all of your drag makeup needs but all of the film industry’s needs as well. They are well versed in “drag” makeup and very happy to help. If you’re a first timer, don’t be afraid to ask for what you need. So let’s get started. As a makeup artist, I will tell you that there are as many ways to do drag makeup as there are makeup artists. I achieve my desired look maybe differently from someone else. And while there is no right or wrong way to do makeup, application and knowing your product is crucial. First and foremost is skin care. Ladies, please take care of your skin. After wearing makeup, please take it off with makeup remover, exfoliate and then moisturize! I can’t stress how important this is!

Assuming you don’t need this, apply your Ben-Nye creme foundation. Some drag queens apply foundation with a brush, others use a sponge and others use their fingertips. I always use a makeup spatula to cut out the amount I need onto a palette so I don’t contaminate the foundation with germs. I then use a Ben Nye Foundation brush to apply the makeup to my skin. If your skin is already near perfect, you can mix the foundation with a moisturizer to get a sheer look. But in my experience, most of us girls need full coverage. My technique is to match the skin tone of my hand (some say neck) and apply the makeup all over smoothly. The trick is to then go back with a contour color (usually two to three shades darker) and a highlighter (two to three shades lighter) and then blend with either a brush or makeup sponge. I prefer a sponge to blend. You can see from the picture below how drastic it will look before you blend it all together. The colors used are not an exaggeration but when blended will give you a flawless foundation. The next step is to powder it down. More on that next time. Be sure to go to Atlanta Costume for all of your makeup needs.

Love and lashes, The next step is foundation. Think of it like this--a house cannot be built without a strong foundation and without a flawless makeup foundation, your face will look rotted! It may start off pretty but it will not last without the support of good makeup. Some men with pronounced beards may require a beard cover up or neutralizer to keep the hair from casting a gray shadow under your makeup. 54 : April March25, 28,2013 2013

FENUXE Presents Mom of the Month: Charlie Foddrell

From the moment my daughter Winter was conceived, she’s been a part of me. I have always encouraged her to follow her dreams and let her heart guide her — that no obstacle is too high in the path of striving for what you want. When she started school, I encouraged her

to strive to do the best in all that she did. My motto was: “As long as you did your best and enjoyed yourself in the process.” What mattered the most was not what others said, it was knowing that you’ve done all you could, win or lose, and still being proud of your accomplishments. I encouraged her to join clubs, organizations and participate in sports, if that’s what she wanted — whatever made her happy. I only wanted her to know and feel that regardless of what she chose, I’d always be there. What some people fail to understand or realize is that a mother’s love is unconditional. Do I love her any less because she is gay? Absolutely not! That’s just plain crazy! To me, that would be the same as not loving her because she has

brown eyes instead of blue. Every part of her is unique. I love her for her uniqueness! I love her for being honest and true to herself, for standing up for her rights and beliefs, and for being the only person she can be: A beautiful, strong, talented young woman. (Yes, OK, she’s a grown woman, but in my heart, she’ll always be my baby! That will never change.) Certainly, life has not been easy for either of us. If anything, it’s been just the opposite. All the things we’ve endured as a family has it made us stronger, closer family unit. So, no matter how many times one of us may fall down, the other is there to help. No matter what happens, or does not happen, I’m going to be there for my daughter, because I love her unconditionally!

To feature your mom or dad here, please email info@fenuxe.com
