FENUXE 5.23.2013 EDITOR’S

NOTE

I recently had the opportunity to travel to San Francisco and attend the GLAAD awards. The evening was emotional, star filled, and above all inspiring. Adam Lambert (who is even cuter in person, y’all) was there accepting the Davidson/Valenti Award presented by Mel Brown of the Spice Girls and he tied with Frank Ocean for Outstanding Musical Artist. Lambert and Brown were absolutely delightful in person. I also had to pleasure of speaking to Brittney Griner (the first out professional athlete) and she could not have been a more genuine and fun person. It was also really cool when she mentioned that she had read what we’d written about her online and she liked what we were doing here in Atlanta.

And I would be remiss not to mention Jaymes and James (from “The Amazing Race” — yes, they are that cut in person!), and the RuPaul’s Jinkx Monsoon (who is beautiful and has such an amazing voice). Don’t forget that Jaymes and James will be in New Orleans for Pride. For more information, see our story about NOLA Pride in this issue on page 26.

I also took time to visit the first and only LGBT history museum in America, where I was truly touched by the story of Monte Punshon, the oldest person on record to have publicly come out. Punshon was born in 1882 to a well-to-do family, she me the love of her life in 1910, and came out in the 1980s at the age of 103. When Punshon was asked if she had any advice for “young gay folk,” she replied, “Cast out fear.”

While her story was deeply moving, what really gave me pause was the incredible and long history that our community has (We didn’t just sashay onto the scene in the ‘60s). It really gave new meaning to the gay mantra, “We’re here, we’re queer, get used to it” (‘cause we’ve been here the whole time, gurl!).

As with most trips it was great fun, but I am glad to be back home in Atlanta. San Francisco is great (I’m gonna totally gay out here with some Dorothy Gale) but there is no place like home. I love our town and our community — hope to see you out and about!

THE MANX EFFECT It goes without saying that shapewear will not completely transform your body, so don’t expect a ripped midsection or a perfect V-shape. Manx will not eliminate excess pounds, but rather make them less pudgy and protruding. What it will do — especially if you tend to have a little belly hanging over your belt — is shape your body so that clothes sit a little better and looser on you, which does wonders for your self-confidence.

FASHION

Of course there is the whole "judging a book by its cover" side to it, but if you have ever tried Manx, you know that this is not about false advertising, but about feeling better about yourself. This is far from a constrictive girdle and much closer to regular cotton underwear that is magically infused with compression benefits that flatten your belly, tighten your chest, even out that muffin top, and lift the buttocks. And speaking of lifting and tightening, Manx underwear has a unique frontal pouch that will not only support what is between your legs, but also cup and lift your J-U-N-K. And correct us if we are wrong, but that is an area all men want to enhance, right? So, go get your Manx!

TIGHT KEEPING IT

John Hilton, Fashion Contributor

It seems like a bubble has burst ever since word got out that Brad Pitt was wearing Spanx for Men in the infamous Chanel ad. Although it has not been confirmed by the actor himself, the mere ‘what-if’ factor of the whole thing is still mind-boggling. It's hard to believe that this is the same guy who got famous modeling Levi’s and stripping down in “Thelma & Louise.” Nevertheless, his now middle-aged midsection apparently needs a little support in order to cope with photo shoots and red carpet events. MEET YOUR MANX You may imagine Pitt wearing some sort of girdle, but sources close to the actor reveal he prefers the much less conspicuous compression T-shirt and tank top variety, which flattens and supports his chest and midsection while keeping it hunky. But still, it does not answer the question as to why a man like Pitt — or any man for that matter — would wear Spanx, or Manx, as the male line of leading shapewear brand Spanx is humorously nicknamed. The answer is simple: For years we've seen the beneficial effects of shapewear on women (which has become almost second nature to dressing well), and with a continuously increasing focus on the male body as a sex object, it seems a natural progression that more and more guys are counting on compression underwear to look and feel their best — especially when a product like Manx is specifically targeted at men’s bodily concerns like moobs, love handles, and muffin-top midsections.

14 : May 23, 2013

MANX FACTS Spanx was invented more then ten years ago by fellow Atlantan Sara Blakely, who wanted to be able to wear tight-fitting clothes without any revealing bumps or lines. Spanx was famously worn by Renée Zellweger in "Bridget Jones's Diary." Today, Spanx is a worldwide phenomenon still headquartered in Atlanta, offering shapewear to both men and women. The former nicknamed Manx, is the only brand of shapewear that is made of cotton. Manx offers a variety of underwear and undershirts with medium to hardcore power compression, but also regular cotton comfort underwear. Check out spanx.com for more info on Manx.

URBAN CULTURE Escaping this stringent childhood, Dr. Ava started her first career as a model and actress: “I rebelled and I became a model in London. I became an actress mainly because I was so shy and so lonely, I wanted to connect to people and I wanted to be liked, I really was a completely lost soul.” The lost soul found her way to the United States, relocating here after she says she hit “rock bottom” in London following abusive relationships and ground-level self-esteem. She earned two doctoral degrees in California: one in human behavior and the other in human sexuality. “I was determined in my mission to find out as much as I could about love, relationships, and sex, and pretty much dedicated my life to finding a healthy relationship. When I did, I realized I wanted to help others overcome guilt and shame,” says Dr. Ava. “It’s been a long and rocky journey, but I’m actually now living the kind of life that I’ve always dreamed of. It’s sort of like a fairytale come true. I’m now very happy that I had all the experiences I had because it makes me a better therapist.” In addition to her private practice as a sex therapist to celebrities and other Angelinos, Dr. Ava is now the author of several books, a prolific public speaker, host of the radio show “Sex Drive,” spokesperson for The Experience Channel, and founder of Loveology University, an online source for those who want to learn more about the mechanics of love. “I started Loveology University as a way to share my wealth of knowledge to anybody and everybody who is interested. Not everyone can afford to go back to college to study human sexuality,” says Dr. Ava.

Love Lessons from Sexpert

Loveology University offers courses for couples, though Dr. Ava admits she’s seeing a decline in monogamy and an increase in open relationships: “People are just living longer, and we all know that monogamy is not a natural human phenomenon,

Dr. Ava Cadell Kat Tippins, Managing Editor

Before her career as a double-doctorate sex therapist, Dr. Ava Cadell was a Hungarian-born Catholic schoolgirl in London with no parents and no direction in sight. “I was raised first in a Catholic orphanage by very strict nuns. I was in a religious environment that made me feel very guilty about sex and ashamed of my body,” Dr. Ava tells FENUXE. 18 : May 23, 2013

it’s a choice that we make. It really isn’t natural to be with one person for 60 years without wanting to stray, or needing more variety emotionally and physically. So I actually help a lot of clients who want to bring a third pleasure into their relationships. A third pleasure can be a third person, it can be a third activity, like tantric sex, it can be exploring BDSM. Whatever it is, I think it’s very healthy.”

Our busy everyday lives and lack of focus can be a recipe for a partner to stray, and Dr. Ava firmly discourages romantic multitasking. “We’ve all become multitaskers and it just doesn't work. The emotions in the brain alter our body language. All off these distractions really have a heavy toll on our emotions. Multitasking actually splits the brain and creates something researchers call spotlights. So all your brain is doing is frantically switching from one activity to another activity,” says Dr. Ava. She suggests keeping your partner in the limelight (not just a halffocused spotlight) and not letting the stresses of the day follow you into the bedroom. No matter how invested you are in a relationship, Dr. Ava says you’re in one of three stages of love: lust, attraction, and attachment.

CHECk IT OUT

lUST pHaSE This one is pretty self-explanatory. It occurs when you first meet a romantic interest and Dr. Ava says it can last for up to a year.

If you’re single and prone to one-night stands, Dr. Ava has advice for you: Approach any new relationship, however fleeting, with love for yourself at the forefront (that includes protecting yourself!). “This first step is to identify your pleasures and take responsibility for your own pleasures. And then engage in hookups, because you can then handle it if anything goes wrong. You can handle an unrealistic expectation,” Dr. Ava says. “If you go in with no concept but selflove, I do believe that you’ll attract the same kind of person. If you are a very needy person who is broken, you’re going to attract the same kind of person.” Whether you’re in a committed relationship or just casually dating, if you try to incorporate a third pleasure in your relationship, the jealousy monster is likely to rear its ugly head. Dr. Ava says the jealous person is usually also the most insecure, so the solution to jealously, however difficult, is selfempowerment. Another relationship-killing monster is cheating, and when asked if she believes the saying “Once a cheater, always a cheater” is true, Dr. Ava replied, “Somewhat.” “There are definitely people who have the propensity to cheat and many of them want to get caught. There are many different kinds of cheaters, and you’re not going to change somebody. That’s a big problem in relationships: People think they can change somebody. And the cheating, it can be an addiction to some people,” Dr. Ava explains. “Mainly, the people who cheat on a regular basis find it easier to live out their fantasy and be uninhibited with a stranger than to do it with someone they love or have a relationship with because they have a fear of being judged or rejected, or even ridiculed.”

aTTRaCTION pHaSE Dr. Ava calls this one “the lovesick phase.” “It’s when you’re madly in love with the person, and you get really emotional and crazy when you don’t hear from them,” she says. This stage can last up to three years. aTTaCHmENT pHaSE This stage, when you feel really comfortable with your partner, usually comes after seven years together and lasts the duration of the relationship. “When you get to the third stage, the lust is dissipated and so you need to bring that back,” says Dr. Ava. “I teach a lot of my clients to maintain that lust phase throughout the relationship and you still have the attachment without letting anything falter.”

No matter which phase you and your partner are in, or if you’re single and looking to break into the lust phase with someone new, Dr. Ava’s advice is all-encompassing: “Create more romantic memories and intimate high peaks. Everything that is great to your heart is good for your brain. Get rid of stress from yourself on a regular basis. Treat yourself like you’re madly in love with you. Communicate your wants, needs, desires, and fears with your partner. Forgive each other freely and often. Respect each other's boundaries, avoid internal and external distractions by focusing on your partner with all five of your senses. If you can take that and utilize that on a regular basis, you’re going to be healthy mentally, physically, and sexually.”

EVENT

Atlanta Jazz Festival FOOd aNd FUN IN CHROmaTIC HaRmONy Conswella Bennett, Contributor

The Atlanta Jazz Festival became a part of the city’s lineup of featured attractions during the late 1970s when Mayor Maynard Jackson decided to hold such an event to put a focus on jazz. “Jazz is America’s music,” says Camille Russell Love, director of the Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs. “The jazz festival is an annual event that has become a legacy every Memorial Day weekend.” For many in the city and for a lot of out-ofstate visitors, the Atlanta Jazz Festival, which will be held May 25-27 this year, has become a tradition. This year, the festival will feature

“Generation Next” to showcase some of today’s most innovative emerging artists. “If you look at the demographics of Atlanta, there are a lot of young people, and we want to bring jazz closer to them,” Love says.

Saturday, May 25 : Main Stage 3 p.m. – Aaron Diehl Quartet 7 p.m. – Meshell Ndegeocello Sunday, May 26 : Main Stage 5 p.m. – Jacob Deaton & the Tribulaton Band 7 p.m. – Gretchen Parlato Monday, May 27 : Main Stage 5 p.m. – Julie Dexter 7 p.m. – The Dominick Farinacci Group To view the complete lineup, scan the QR code below.

Some of these artists who will be performing are José James, Gretchen Parlato, Meshell Ndegeocello, Dominick Farinacci, Aaron Diehl, Tia Fuller, Jacob Deaton, Julie Dexter, and Ambrose Akinmusire. “We’ll introduce exciting new artists like Alexandra Jackson and give youth jazz bands their first big break,” Love says. Parlato says she is eager to perform in Atlanta for the first time. “As soon as I knew it was a possibility, I was excited,” she tells FENUXE. “I want to share my music and make people feel good.” An alumna of the Thelonious Monk Institute, she won the 2004 Thelonious Monk Institute International Vocal Competition. One of Parlato’s popular songs is “Butterfly.” She performed the song with Meshell Ndegeocello earlier this year on “One Shot Not.” Ndegeocello, a Neo-soul artist who has been popular since the 1990s, especially among lesbians, will also be performing during this year’s festival. It’s possible that the two could perform together

22 : May 23, 2013

during the weekend, but because they perform on different days, Parlato says she is uncertain if it could be pulled off. Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau Director of Consumer Marketing JoAnn Haden-Miller says the Atlanta festival is still the largest jazz festival in the South, adding that some of the top jazz artists have performed at the festival over the years. This year, organizers are expecting large crowds to make their way to Piedmont. Last year, around 50,000 to 75,000 people attended each day, Love said. This year, she is optimistic that the numbers will continue to increase. Love suggests taking MARTA to avoid trying to park with the rest of the crowd.

Besides focusing on today’s youth, this year they are also trying to tap into the international community. “There will be something for every jazz lover’s taste from Latin jazz, swing, traditional straight-ahead, and Afro-Cuban to jazz enlivened with neo-soul and R&B,” Love added. During the festival, the park will be open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. The festival will also include a Kid Zone area, sponsored by Publix Super Markets, with games, inflatables, and other activities. While families are encouraged to attend, Love said your fur children are not allowed in the Festival.

For more information and a schedule of the events, check out the Atlanta Jazz Festival's website at www.atlantafestivals.com.

NIGHTLIFE/XPLORE

New Orleans

K

LGBT History IS a Short Flight Away Eugene Salas, Editorial Intern

Known for its food, jazz, and soul, New Orleans is the South’s unique hotspot to visit. With New Orleans' Pride Festival coming up on June 21 through June 24, it’s a great opportunity to visit to the French Quarter’s multiple gay bars that are conveniently nestled together on and around Bourbon Street. Familiar face Ellen DeGeneres emceed New Orleans Pride in 1981; ever since, the event that symbolises LGBT pride has been held in New Orleans every year. This year, the grand marshals won’t disappoint. Jaymes (openly gay) and James (who’s straight) will be your hunky emcees for the weekend. These Chippendales men were the runner ups in season 21 of “The Amazing Race.” Jaymes, who used to live in New Orleans until Katrina, is returning to raise money for ForgetCancerNow.com The festivities start at Boomtown Casino on Friday, June 21 with a kick-off party hosted by

Jaymes and James, while local talents perform alongside them to raise money for New Orleans Pride and the LGBT community. For just $20, you’ll get food, music, drinks, a meet and greet with the dashing grand marshals, and $20 worth of play bucks to use at the casino.

Pride Jaymes & James from The Amazing Race season 21

On Saturday, June 22, Chevron Family Day will be held in Washington Square Park. Washington Square Park will provide a family-friendly day where you can find food trucks, games for kids, and more than 30 vendors. Local singer Beth Trepagnier and band 5 Finger Discount will be performing. After a relaxing day in the park, get ready for the parade. Starting at 6 p.m., the Dow Pride Parade allows any school, organization, or company to participate. And it’s not a parade unless there are bikes, carriages, and floats! Unlike Atlanta, float riders in New Orleans are permitted to throw treats at parade-goers, so watch out for candy,

necklaces, and other stuff to collect. The parade starts at Washington Square Park and loops back around, stopping a few blocks away. Taking a moment to observe the history of the LGBT community in New Orleans, Monday, June 24 will be the day to remember the 1973 arson attack on the Upstairs Lounge. A widely forgotten tragedy, this year marks the fire's 40th anniversary. The Upstairs Lounge arson, the deadliest crime against a group of LGBT people in U.S. history, occurred on the final day of Pride weekend in 1973, members of the Metropolitan Community Church held a closing service followed by an afterparty inside the Upstairs Lounge. As friends relaxed and chatted in one of the few places where there was no stigma associated with being gay, it was an all-around good night. However, the night took a change for the worse. After investigating an alarm, a bartender found a fire engulfing the staircase. Some people fled to the roof so they could climb onto other buildings to escape. Not everyone was as fortunate. Some tried squeezing through the barred windows, only to fall to their death or get caught by the flames. Others could not escape.

26 : May 23, 2013

The fire resulted in the deaths of 32 people and injured 15 others. Among those deaths, Assistant Pastor George Mitchell died while attempting to rescue his boyfriend, their charred remains found embracing each other. When officials investigated the fire, it was determined to be arson and they arrested the suspect in relation to another attack. The suspect, Rodger Nunez, was kicked out of the bar earlier that day and was seeking revenge. Nunez had been diagnosed with conversion hysteria previously. When he was questioned by police, he went in convulsions and was taken to Charity Hospital. He managed to escape while under doctors' watch. He was never found or arrested, even though he was a common sight in the French quarter. He killed himself a year later. Media coverage on the event was minimal, downplaying the fact that the majority of the people in the fire were LGBT. Those

The fire resulted in the deaths of 32 people and injured 15 others. who did address the attack joked and made light of the situation. Many churches refused to hold a memorial service for the victims, and numerous families did not claim relation to their “loved” ones. Some victims couldn't be identified because it was common to carry a fake ID so they wouldn't be outed. Taking place on the site of the fire, a memorial event will bring

together witnesses and city officials to educate people about the tragedy on June 24. Afterward the group will move to Café Istanbul for a special premier of “Upstairs, the Musical.” This musical is based on of the arson attack and it benefits to New Orleans LGBT community. Tickets are $35 and it runs every day of Pride.

EDITOR'S PICK: Want to see more cute guys and dance all night? You gotta check out The Bourbon Pub and OZ Bar.

These are the moments we remember when we answer the aggravating question, “Why do you guys need a Pride day?” It’s not only to say, “Hey gurl heyyy,” but it’s to remember that life for LGBT people has been a constant fight. These days help us to remember that we are not alone and that we have the support of our community through rough times.

THE FRENCH MARKET: Connected to Café du Monde, you can walk off your food as you explore this wide open market that has a little bit of everything.

So if you’re free this summer and are looking for a change of scenery, look no further than New Orleans! Only a hop and skip away (a nonstop flight from ATL to NOLA is only an hour and a half, or you could make the uncomplicated seven-hour drive), it's an easy getaway for fun times and fun people.

Other Places To Visit

CAFÉ DU MONDE: Best known for their cafe au lait and French style beignets. Open all hours of the day, and night, it's a must stop location with friends.

MAGAZINE STREET: Want to do even more shopping? Magazine Street has six miles of it; it even has a shuttle. It has antique shops, clothing boutiques, restaurants, and bars. NEW ORLEANS MUSEUM OF ART: Established in 1911, it’s the oldest museum in New Orleans. With more than 40,000 pieces that span multiple decades, this is a must for art lovers.

A gay male adult film star and a married lesbian: Which one runs an adult film empire and which one loves to curl up with an erotica novel? Atlantan Charlie Harding is most known for performing at FLEX and being a wildly sexy, openly gay star of all male adult films, so it’d be easy to mistake his persona for one that’s drenched in sex. But Charlie’s more than just his onscreen persona; he’s an intellectual bookworm who’s marrying two of his passions — sex and literature — by poring through erotica and hand-selecting his favorites for WildeCity.com’s “Charlie Harding Presents...” series. Read all about it.

Why should people read porn instead of watching it? The images you create in your head are very specific to yourself. You may watch a porn and think the actors are "kinda hot" but when you read erotica, you create the exact image in your brain that turns you on, from the physical traits of the characters to the settings and surroundings. That makes it even hotter. You've hand-selected each novella. What criteria do you have for endorsing a particular submission? I have certain things that turn me on, so I tend to look for those first. Then I look at what my audience tells me turns them on. I want each story to be something you read all the way through because you can't wait to find out what's next. OK, I’ll bite. What’s next? We have a bunch of fun stuff up our sleeves. I love me some vampires, so expect more of those. I'm a sci fi nut, so get ready for some hot gay space sex, and I'm always on board for some super hot athletes. As we add more authors and ideas, who knows where it will lead! I love that we have so many different authors writing, each with their own style, point of view, and erotic vision.

charlie harding 32 : May 23, 2013

Are there any topics that are too taboo for you to publish? Well, that's a good question. There are some very shocking things out there that some folks find erotic. Others feel that vanilla gay sex is taboo. We have chosen to NOT include stories that have any underage sexual component, nonconsensual forced sex or rape, and a few other things. One of the biggest debates in the erotica industry is over condom usage in written erotica. My personal take is this: This is a written version of sex to create a mental image of eroticism and fantasy, so if the reader feels that a condom should be used, visualize it that way. If you find your fantasy to be more erotic envisioning it without, then don't visualize a condom.

What we have to remember is that you can't contract an STI or HIV fantasizing about sexual situations in the written word, but that in reality these risks exist. Are you an avid reader and if so, who are some of your favorites? I read constantly and always try to have at least four books going at once! I love gay fiction and erotica, and my other love is sci-fi. As far as sci-fi goes, Ben Bova, John Scalzi, and Frank Herbert (and his son's continuations of the Dune series) have all been big favorites. I am almost caught up with George R. R. Martin's "Game of Thrones" series. From the gay fiction, romance, and erotica genres, get ready for Patrick Darcy's "Confessions of a Gay Rugby Player" series. I'm also thoroughly enjoying the books by Geoffrey Knight and Ethan Day from Wilde City Press. Are all/most of the authors of your favorite erotica gay men? That's one of the interesting quirks of the gay romance and gay erotica genres. There are a significant number of female writers AND READERS who love the gay male genre! Some of my favorite books and stories about gay men are actually written by women. Straight women are a huge fan base for gay porn and gay erotica. From the many that I've spoken with, it's a combination of the masculine male eroticism, and the general fact of romance and sexual excitement. I think the talent to put together quality writing in the gay male romance and erotica categories isn't a gender specific skill, but a true artistic talent shared by many of both sexes. Do you plan on having any "read by Charlie Harding" audiobooks? You must be psychic! We are in the preliminary stages of putting together a recording schedule! Stay tuned!

Berlin Sylvestre, Staff Writer

What do you do when you realize that being a successful banking litigator in NYC isn’t your thing? You become a sex columnist for Huffington Post, then start up your own lesbian porn company. Jincey Lumpkin is the founder and Chief Sexy Officer of JuicyPinkBox.com, a lesbian adult film site created for, by, and with women who are into women. Is it hot? Type in the URL and you be the judge. For now, let’s do a background check.

You grew up in Carrollton, GA. What’s the gay scene like there? I haven’t been there for years, but back in the day it was terrible. I knew one gay guy, but he died of AIDS. That was pretty much my interaction with the gay community. You didn’t come to Atlanta to party with the gays? I actually didn’t come out of the closet until I was 25, and I was in law school [in Florida], so I never really got the opportunity. Did you always know you were into women or were you a late bloomer? No, I definitely always knew I was into women. Growing up, there weren’t any lesbians in the media, really. I had never even heard of girls kissing girls until [Jill Sobule’s] “I Kissed A Girl” and I was like, “Oh my god! Girls kiss other girls!” Then I started watching “The Howard Stern Show” and was like, “Women can actually have sex with other women!” How do you respond to the question, “How do two women have sex?” Well, first of all, the question is usually from straight guys and is followed up with: “Is it like what they do in porn?” That’s actually why I got into this industry, because no, it’s not like anything you see in porn. I mean, sure we go down on each other, but that isn’t the primary sex act. There are a lot of other things ... and not just strap-ons.

Jincey Lumpkin

On a scale of 1 - 10, how unsexy is mainstream lesbian porn? Negative 10. When I first came out, I really didn’t know too much about sleeping with women, so I watched a bunch of lesbian porn and thought, “This is not arousing at all.” I didn’t like all the tongue gymnastics, where they stick their tongues out and smother them all over each other. I also hate it when women baby-talk. How is the porn on JuicyPinkBox different? I’m a lesbian and I know about lesbian sex. I don’t hire “gay for pay,” either. The women you see in our films sleep with women in their personal lives. We have lesbians, bisexuals, queer people ... a wide range of

women. We hire masculine women, too, which you don’t see in mainstream porn. We have butch women, androgynous women, those who consider themselves gender fluid, and a male-to-female transsexual woman. In terms of the look, I always conceptualized something really cinematic. I wanted to create sex scenes that were like those in a [Hollywood] movie, but without all the story … as if the sex scene was snipped right out, but the sex itself is hardcore. Best of both worlds. What kind of environment do you create to get the actresses comfortable? Chemistry is really important to me. I always allow them to pick their co-stars from a list and we only shoot two scenes per day: one in the morning and one in the afternoon, so it gives them time to get to know one another. It translates on screen. So here’s a curveball: What’s the “money shot” in lesbian porn? *groans* There’s no money shot. I think that whole concept is stupid, reducing sex to a money shot. There’s no formula in my porn. It’s not, first she gives him a blowjob, then he fingers her, then they do it in the front, then they do it in the back, then he pops it on her chest. We don’t do that. Every scene is different; the women are allowed to bring their own unique brand of sexuality. I’m not interested in making “fast food porn.” What’s an answer to a question you’ve always wanted to be asked? I’ve always wanted to be asked what my fantasy is. What’s your fantasy? I’d love a have sex in the sunshine on top of a private yacht in the middle of the ocean, just me and my wife. Any plans on visiting Atlanta? Absolutely! I love Atlanta! It’s a place I’m still very much tied to, so I’ll be there often. Excellent. So perhaps we’ll catch Jincey sippin’ a cocktail on the patio at Einstein’s. In the meantime, you can see her work (but not her, sadly) at JuicyPinkBox.com. FENUXE.COM : 33

ARE YOU HaRdWIREd TO BE Berlin Sylvestre, Staff Writer

One of the most vital keys to sexual attraction is right beneath your nose. It can happen by accident: an innocent hug from a co-worker you didn’t find particularly hot until you got close enough to take in his essence, your body instantly flooding with an inexplicable surge of excitement. It can be intentional, like a cunning lover leaving his T-shirt on your bed knowing that when you wake, you’ll be enveloped in the aromatic hotness of … well, him. Pheromones are fascinating things. Scientists have longknown that the presence of smells have a direct influence on behavior in wildlife, predominantly when it comes to mating. But what about humankind — namely the gay community, who (because their coupling involves one gender) can’t reproduce? If people are procreators “by nature,” why are we inadvertently and physiologically picking up on the unique scents of our own sex? Why would we need to know the sexual and corporeal health of someone we can’t make babies with? As science would suggest, darlings, it’s because we were born that way. Revealing (and controversial) studies centered around the role pheromones play in the lives of the LGBT community have blown the lid off the argument that many anti-gay groups have used to call our way of life “unnatural.” The results show that indeed, some gay people actually are attracted to their own sex, providing scientific evidence that disproves the absurdity of our kind having a “choice” in the matter. To measure the innate quirks of the human brain, like why some of us are optimists or the reason schizophrenics behave the way they do, we rely on cognitive scientists to dig into the workings of our gray matter and provide the visuals we need to understand what’s going on inside our brains. With the use of MRI and PET scanners, American and Swedish neuroscientists exposed volunteers of all sexualities to a variety of human pheromones. In one part of their studies, heterosexual males were told to sniff an estrogen derivative. Once the smell registered, their brain’s hypothalamus region — responsible for a number of things, including sexual attraction — fired right up, but when administered the same test, gay males showed absolutely no hypothalamic response. 36 : May 23, 2013

(Shocking!) However, when exposed to a testosterone compound found in male sweat, the gay men’s brains showed the tell-tale signs of “Yes, ma’am!” as did the straight women exposed to the compound. Lesbians showed no response to male pheromones (ya don’t say), but lit up like Christmas trees when exposed to the estrogen, much like their straight male counterparts. Transgendered individuals proved to have the widest range of responses, all dependent upon their natural attraction to the gender of their sexual preference. Perhaps even more interesting, the study showed that gay men prefer the body odors of other gay men over those of straight men. Of all control groups except the gay men, the scent of homosexual gents was least appealing. Further, the findings disclosed that the heterosexual men and lesbians in the study found the testosterone compound marginally irritating. Straight women found both scents equally pleasant, but admitted the estrogen did have the faculties to be slightly more bothersome. (Oh, no she didn’t!) In terms of familial authority, the straight women found both male and female hormones equal in intensity, while the lesbians and straight guys found the male hormone more authoritative than the one that would’ve perhaps come from their mothers. But homosexuality isn’t just a human trait. More than 450 species of animals have been documented displaying homosexual behavior. “It’s a dominance thing,” is the common explanation, so I guess gay penguins, swans, turtles, and the like who’ve made life commitments to one another and nurtured abandoned babies of their species are just showing their dominance. (Whatever helps you sleep at night, y’all.) So there you have it. Our body’s natural response to pheromones could help silence the debate over whether we fight our heterosexuality to become “queer” or whether we’re just doing what is natural to us. Our love and sex lives are ultimately no one’s business but our own, so the fact that scientists have to explain to our oppressors that we’re perfectly natural human beings completely reeks. Zap airborne Nastiness with

Airocide Air Purifier Kat Tippins, Managing Editor

One indulgence we should all allow ourselves is clean air to breathe inside our homes, especially those of us who suffer from asthma or allergies. Airocide is a top-notch filterless air purifier that outperforms similar devices by destroying airborne pathogens instead of just trapping them.

At $799.99, Airocide’s superior technology may be a bit pricier than other air purifiers, but its filterless design will cost less to maintain over time, and $99.99/ month payment plans are available. For more information, or to order your own Airocide, visit airocide. com. Also, check out Airocide’s March 2013 appearance on “Ellen” at airocide.com/ellen.

40 : May 23, 2013

Other air purifiers require one of the different types of filters: HEPA, HEPA-like, carbon, or washable foam. HEPA filters need to be replaced about once a year; carbon filters should be replaced quarterly. Air purifier replacement filters can range in price from $15-$100, so not only is there the hassle of physically washing and/or replacing the filter, but there’s also the endlessly continued cost of owning and maintaining a purifier that requires a filter. Airocide’s FDA-approved technology was developed through 12 years of NASA’s independent research. Instead of catching harmful particles in a filter, Airocide zaps them out of existence on contact. Airocide accomplishes this super effective pathogen killing spree through hardcore science: The air purifier draws airborne filth into a dense matrix of reactive catalysts that tip a super intense 254-nanometer light … and POW! Bye-bye fungi. In addition to pesky fungi, Airocide also eliminates mold, dust, pollen, bacteria, viruses, and household VOCs (volatile organic compounds — the unhealthy gases emitted by household products such as cleaning supplies, pesticides, and aerosol sprays).

The Tide is Always High at

Ocean Prime Berlin Sylvestre, Staff Writer

VALET GREETS YOU AT THE ENTRANCE OF OCEAN PRIME, ALLOWING YOU TO STEP OUT OF YOUR CAR AND INTO THE CLIMATECONTROLLED FOYER OF THE RESTAURANT THAT SMELLS BEAUTIFULLY OF WARM LEMON POUND CAKE.

44 : May 23, 2013

O

NCE IN AND SEATED, you’re surrounded by tastefully allocated marble, gazing at chandeliers made of blownglass matte baubles. The lighting is dim, sexy, and given a lift by a backlit bar filled with shimmering, colorcoordinated bottles of quality spirits. On your white linen table, black cloth napkins encase heavy silverware while steel candelabras topped by miniature lamp shades provide the menu lighting.

The service staff was incredibly smooth. At least four different servers in fresh-pressed white coats and ties stealthily attended to our table during the experience, quickly and seemingly from impulse. One polite gentleman used a crumb brush to tidy up between servings.

There’s something to be said for a visible kitchen. It means a place is comfortable and confident enough to let anyone and everyone see how the “back of the house” works. Even though we sat closest to the (very clean, orderly) kitchen, we didn’t hear any of the typical back and forth bellowing of the kitchen staff — probably because of how orderly the layout was. Ocean Prime is for lovers. Lovers of design, lovers of fine drink, and lovers of exquisite food. This is undoubtedly the place you take the lover on whom you’ll spare no expense. Start with the gorgeous Berries and Bubbles Martini. Dry ice finishes the presentation, infused tableside into your delicate glass, imparting a curling fog and an effervescence, a bubbling that begets a dancing effect on the watermelon, strawberry, and blueberry. After the final sips, you're left with vodka-soaked fruit that still retains its character. Ocean Prime’s Tuna Tartar is an awardwinning app comprised of sushi tuna, avocado, crispy wontons, ponzu sauce, pickled ginger, and sesame seeds — the latter of which stand out beautifully. It’s a comely delicacy. Their wedge salad comes with a creamy bleu cheese and cabernet buttermilk dressing, smoked bacon bits, red onion, and halved grape tomatoes that provide a sweet touch that augments the punch of bleu cheese crumbles.

I have never literally gasped and gotten chills from a bite of food, but Ocean Prime takes a New York Strip to the next level. Ordered medium rare, it came out with a perfect crust of housemade seasonings and was wonderfully juicy and red throughout the middle. I was loathe to swallow, savoring each bite for its never-ending flavor — my reward for holding back. The seasoning and the cooking process (their steaks are broiled at 1,200 degrees) make for the absolute best cut of beef I’ve had. Not just in Atlanta — ever. The earthy caps of mushroom that accompanied were steaming, shining marvelously under the light. They were clearly marinated at length before being sautéed, giving them a velvety mouthfeel. One taste of the Chilean sea bass and I was covering my face. (You know food is good when you make angry faces after trying it.) "I can taste in places I had no idea I had tastebuds," I recall saying to my date. The whipped potatoes were sumptuous, sure, but the carrot medallions that ensphered the dish sat in a sauce so complex and so palatable, it came off as an arresting risotto bisque.

Every element that a fine dining establishment should be well-versed in was above par, from swift valet to sincere farewells. Ocean Prime should be a clear contender for a Michelin committee review. Executive Chef Jason Shelley’s work is nothing short of art and every bit as good, if not better, than certain restaurants already bestowed the coveted award. As such, you can expect prices that reflect the great lengths each member of the staff goes to in order to provide an outstanding experience to pamper their guests, but you, as a lover of the finer things, will have nary a regret as you sign your bill and contemplate what you’ll order on your next visit. How do you woo those hotties according to their signs?

GemIni [may 21 – JUN. 22]

The Twins need a good mix, so a vacay that blends the beauty of the outdoors and the luxury of shelter means a lavish cabin getaway is a serious turn-on.

CANCER [JUN. 21 – JUl. 22]

The Crab is a water sign (go figure), so a sexy makeout sesh on a blanket by the shore is a go — especially if the beach is deserted.

LEO [JUl. 23 – aUg. 22]

Thanks to your support, we have outgrown our old space. Please come see us. Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there.® CALL ME TODAY.

The Lion is known for ferocity and bravery, so being yanked into another room during a party for a risky romp doth not displease His Kingliness.

virgo [aUg. 23 – SEpT. 22] The Virgin is only shy on the outside, but PDA still isn’t a fave. Cook her dinner at your (tidy) home and you’ll unleash the sexy beast within!

libra [SEpT. 23 – OCT. 22]

The Scales require balance. Some cold (topshelf) drinks in a sparkling hot tub will pretty much guarantee some slippery smoochin’.

scorpio [OCT. 23 – NOV. 22]

The Scorpion is an intense creature who burns with desire at the idea of sensual rubdowns. A slow massage laced with pillow-talk will fire him right up.

SAGITTARIUS [NOV. 23 – dEC. 21]

The Archer is highly social and doesn’t mind if you show your affection in public. Be adventurous (and handsy) on the dance-floor and watch what happens.

Capricorn [dEC. 22 – JaN. 19]

The Goat is a climber who appreciates hard work in her lover. Go ahead and brag about your accomplishments — it’ll pique her in every way you want.

AQUARIUS [JaN. 20 – FEB. 18] Cleo Meyer, Agent 1776 Peachtree St NE Atlanta, GA 30309 Bus: 404-817-0960 cleo.meyer.mdhi@statefarm.com

The Water Bearer is good at keeping secrets — especially his fetishes. Drop some kinky innuendo at dinner and watch him try hiding that knowing smile.

PISCES [FEB. 19 – maR. 20]

The Fish is known for being in love with love. Don’t be shy with the poetry and flowers. Romance him proper and he’ll swoon right into your arms.

ARIES [maR. 21 – apR. 19]

The Ram is a go-getter and almost treats sexual encounters like competition. If you can hang, let him know and it’s on and poppin’!

Taurus [apR. 20 – may 20]

State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company Bloomington, IL 1101399.1

The Bull is highly aroused by scent, so make damn sure you pay attention to the way you smell and you’ll instantly be in his sights.

Holler Poodles!! With an issue theme like “Sex and Candy” I’m sure some of you can’t wait to see what my classy demented mind will share with you. My first question is this? Are we suggesting that people start using candy during sex? I’ve tried the whipped cream and “honey” thing which was both hot and sticky but way too much mess to clean up after. But I never really gave much thought to candy... until... this one time at bandcamp. Let’s just say anytime you venture on a new path, expect the unexpected. Allegedly, there may have been a cute, slender, bottom guy commanding my attention one evening at a nice coffee house gay bar. Now let me explain something. There are a few lots and lots of weaknesses I may have. One of them is a perky, smooth, clean bubble butt. In addition, this guy was a little on the fem side (which I don’t mind a bit) and sort of talked with his butt. In other words, when he moved, his ass led the way. I was hypnotized! I’m also an assmatic--I needed my inhaler!

in his tent when... all of a sudden... a loud cloud of strawberry gas whizzed by my face. Unbeknownst to me, the buildup of carbon dioxide gas from the pop rocks resulted in a large gaseous blowout that literally blew my skirt up. And just to clarify (as if you need more clarity), hot air being blown over poop is gonna stink--only this time, it smelled like strawberry flavored poop rocks. Disgusting! He had the nerve to laugh! I was done! Well... that is... if it really happened... Love and lashes,

We dated hooked up a few times and then he revealed he wanted to try something he heard about from a friend. He said he heard it felt really good to put pop rocks down there while being rimmed. I was like huhhhhh? For those of you who don’t know, Pop Rocks are a candy treat (popularized in the 80s) that contain fruit flavorings, sugar and carbon dioxide. As you eat them, it gives the sensation of small explosions in your mouth. He reiterated begged his request. Well, one thing led to another and we got busy. I wasn’t thrilled with the idea but his eagerness made up for any apprehension I may have had. And did I mention his rear looked like a sculpture of David! Sheer perfection! To compound the problem, the sound of pop rocks exploding was distracting, yet... I was still hypnotized! Fast forward a few minutes... he seemed to be in ecstasy as he was writhing away. I was a happy camper about ready to pound my stake 62 : May 23, 2013

FENUXE Presents Mom of the Month: Denise Beauchamp Written by Paul Beauchamp While my coming out was stressful, my parents have always been amazingly supportive. Just a month after coming out, my parents offered to help me fly to Austin, Texas to see a guy I had met in college who had gone home for the summer. Looking back, I realize how amazing it is for parents to do that. When I began volunteering with the HRC, they attended the dinners with me, which blew so many people away to see an entire family together at the dinner. Then when I began working for an LGBT marketing company, they thought it was awesome for me to work in my own community. Denise Beauchamp and Congressman Lewis

My dad, being the strong, reserved type has always been supportive of whatever made me happy. My mother though, is most

definitely the mouthpiece for the two of them, which is why I’m writing this today. She regularly sends me messages about how proud they are of my work with the gay community and of who I have become. She has always been a woman of strength and someone that I’ve admired. She has been handed some really shitty situations in her life and has handled them with love and poise that I could never hope to match. She has always been the type to put others first and that is what I love about her. Ever since I was young, she has been the sounding board for some of my biggest struggles and has always been there no matter what. So for me, that makes her mom of the century.
