I can remember when I first moved to Georgia, I was a total wreck. I have diabetes, hypertension, depression, prostate cancer survivor, chest pains, arthritis — you name it I had it. When I first arrived at Pride Medical they checked me out and put me on medication, and gave me their recommendations. I put my trust in them and my health began to improve. I will never forget when I started to show an improvement Dr. Anisman sent me the biggest barrel of yellow mums with a note of how proud he was with my improvements. No other doctor had ever done anything like this for me before or put my welfare first. Later I started seeing Dr. David Morris; he is the most passionate and concerned person. He listens intently, asks all pertinent questions, and makes sure you feel comfortable. And Pride Medical has other physicians and specialists to assist you. It is like one-stop shopping, including prescriptions. I have been a patient there since 1995. Nothing or no one could persuade me to go to another practice. — Eugene Blu Johnson with Dr. David Morris

Flying With Weed: f o h t r i b e R d n a l l The Fa s k o o r B . B a n n o v a h S D. David Kinney, Digital Editor

Everyone knows the feeling. It’s the feeling that grips you when you see blue lights in your rearview mirror and hear a siren getting closer. It’s dread, regret, fear, and anxiety crashing together into an emotional experience that can leave even the strongest among us with wobbly knees. Atlanta drag performer Shavonna B. Brooks was sitting on a United Airlines flight when this terrible feeling consumed her. Through the windows she saw the cops boarding the plane and she knew they were coming for her. This is the story of her fall and rebirth. Brooks was at the airport traveling to a benefit for a friend who was competing in the Miss Continental Plus pageant. She’s traveled all over the country for gigs and there was nothing particularly unusual about this trip. Checking in for her flight and going through security all went smoothly. With little hassle Brooks boarded her Chicago bound flight and quickly settled in. Cell phone, iPad, and headphones were safely unpacked and stowed in the seatback in front of her. She knew the drill. 32 : August 29, 2013

Buckled in and ready to go she noticed something happening at the front of the plane. The police boarded the aircraft and starting walking down the aisle. “I packed up my belongings as soon as I saw them. I knew they were coming for me,” Brooks said. What the other passengers didn’t know was Brooks’ checked luggage contained an illegal drug - marijuana, Cannabis sativa to be exact. Despite the fact that Brooks was traveling to Illinois, the 20th state to legalize medical marijuana, she was arrested because this is Georgia. While other states are working on legalization, decriminalization, or licensure programs for medicinal use Georgia seems happy with its war on pot.

In a report from the ACLU looking at marijuana possession arrest rates from 2001 through 2010, Georgia had the sixth highest arrest rate in the country. "[These arrests have] needlessly ensnared hundreds of thousands of people in the criminal justice system, had a staggeringly disproportionate impact on AfricanAmericans, and come at a tremendous human and financial cost," the ACLU report said. "The price paid by those arrested and convicted of marijuana possession can be significant and linger for years, if not a lifetime." 32,473 people were arrested in 2010 for possession of marijuana in Georgia. Ninety-three percent of those arrested in Atlanta were Black. But none of that mattered to Brooks as she sat on the airplane waiting for the police to find her. “This was completely my fault. I've traveled with [marijuana] for years. This one particular time, I put it inside a grinder and stuck it in with some bracelets. Stupid mistake. I know they check jewelry because it shows up like foil,” Brooks confessed. Brooks immediately packed her things before the police got to her seat. She sat collected, calm and ready to face what stood before her. With no delay the police escorted her off of the plane and began to question her. “It was like a movie,” Books said. [Continued on Page 34]

FENUXE.COM : 33

[Continued From Page 32]

An officer quickly asked her if she knew why she had been removed from the plane. “Y’all found it,” Brooks told the officers with little doubt in her mind. A nod from one of the other officers was the only confirmation she needed. Some people would get upset in this situation. Others would get angry. It’s easy to get upset or angry when you’ve been caught doing something that bears consequences. But that’s not who Shavonna Brooks is. She held her head high, she told the truth, and she accepted the consequences. “It was my mistake and it hurt at the time. But my best friend and nephew were right by my side - all 13 dreadful hours of it,” Brooks said. “The arresting officers were so nice. I asked that they get my bag with my wigs from underneath the plane and not make me walk through the airport being a public figure and knowing a lot of flight attendants. They honored my request and sent a car to the ramp,” Brooks said. In handcuffs she was put into the police car and they made their way to booking. “I talked to the officers the whole way down Tara Boulevard. The female officer was asking where I bought the shoes I had on because she wore a size 12 in women’s,” Brooks remembered. And everything moved along smoothly until Brooks got to the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office for booking. In the Clayton County jail men wear orange and

women wear green. If you look at Brooks it would seem obvious that she should get a green outfit. But Clayton County goes by the gender on your driver's license. “The most horrible thing was when they made me put on the orange outfit. After that the boys went craaaaazy. When I moved to Georgia they changed my sex on my ID to male. Bitches. But you know, ignorance is beyond no one person.” Brooks explained. After attracting unwanted attention from the imprisoned men, the Sheriff’s Office put her in a cell by herself. When they didn’t have room for her to sit alone she was put with the female prisoners. Eventually she was released and had her day in court. She pled guilty to a misdemeanor charge and a judge sentenced her to one year of probation, 40 hours of community service, and random drug testing. Instead of letting this defeat her or get her down she is using the experience to better her life. “I wouldn’t have done anything differently. God has a way of doing everything in your life when you’re a believer. This was supposed to happen,” Brooks remarked. And her words aren’t ringing hollow. She’s turning her life around and getting sober. “I’m very proud of myself having smoked almost every day since the age of 16. I’m not messing this up. Any addiction in life can be overcome. It takes strength and belief in yourself and you can make that change. In my case I was forced. But it was what I needed in order to have a better chance at life. I’m ready to take on this new opportunity,” Brooks said. Shavonna B. Brooks has been sober since July 22nd. You can see her perform at Burkhart’s Pub where she hosts the “EXTRAVAGANZA” on Saturday nights.

Celebrate your pride! Be smart. Have fun. Play safe. For so many wonderful reasons – not the least of which are our strong African-American population and central role in the human rights movement – Atlanta is a wonderful city in which to celebrate Black Gay Pride. Still, as you enjoy this beautiful city and engage in the festivities and remembrances, be smart about your sexual activity. Historically, HIV/AIDS has disproportionately affected the LGBT community but is increasingly affecting African-Americans. Nationally, African-Americans represent 14% of the population, yet according to the CDC, 44% of all new HIV infections involved African-Americans. Worldwide, new HIV rates are down 20%, however, rates are rising in the African-American community. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, African-Americans are diagnosed with HIV at nearly 3 times the rate of Hispanics, and 9 times the rate of Caucasians. AfricanAmericans are diagnosed with AIDS at a rate 3 times higher than Hispanics, and 10 times higher than Caucasians. Unfortunately, the death rate from AIDS is 4 times higher than Hispanics, and nearly 9 times higher than Caucasians. The only shame in this data is that any one group is, or ever has been, disproportionately affected by HIV. However, no single person or group should feel shame. Instead, as a

community, now is the time for action to reverse this trend. We can each do our part as individuals. Research has identified a general group of factors attributed to rising rates of HIV/AIDS in the African-American community that include a high community viral load, a greater prevalence of sexually transmitted infections because of the lack of testing, and less access to treatment. Additionally, stigma associated with being a man who has sex with men, homosexual/same-gender-loving, bisexual, a substance user, or having AIDS is prevalent in the African-American community. Socio-economic factors related to sexism, racism, poverty and overall lack of access to health care are additional contributing factors. A study by RAND Corporation, a non-profit research center, found that more than half of African-Americans surveyed believed the government withholds pertinent information about HIV and a cure for HIV is available but not shared with the disadvantaged.

Initially, it was true the knowledge about HIV and its affect on the immune system was sparse, while side effects and complications burdened early treatment options. However, research identified HIV as a virus, and like many viral pathogens, we can prevent or reduce transmission. You have the power to make changes going forward.

Visit our booth at Black Gay Pride 2013 for more information about HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment.

Your first task is to know your HIV status. If you do not have HIV, find a strategy to stay negative. Safer sex practices can prevent new HIV infections. Each of us has the strength within to negotiate sexual practices that are reasonable. If you carry the HIV virus, early detection and monitoring can reduce the risk of developing AIDS and dying from AIDSrelated complications. One possible rationale that African-Americans die from AIDS at a rate higher than Hispanics and Caucasians is because African-Americans wait too long to be tested. Get tested. Additionally, advances in treatment research significantly improved medication, meaning side effects are minimal, and taking medication allows a person with HIV to enjoy a near-normal life expectancy. If you have HIV, manage it. Treatment suppresses HIV replication that, in turn, lowers the viral load. A lower viral load means fewer viruses are in the blood and fewer viruses are available to infect new sexual partners. Research has shown that HIV treatment alone can decrease new infections by approximately 50% in the general population, and by 33% in those considered high risk. Research has also demonstrated that in those with undetectable viral loads, the risk of transmission is reduced dramatically. Knowing and managing your status can positively affect your individual health and the overall health of our community. Next, gain access to health care and be tested for other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Other STIs damage tissue that allows HIV easy entry into the body, thereby increasing risk of infection. Your health care provider (HCP) can do this testing. If you do not have a HCP, many

community clinics and health departments do testing free of cost or at a reduced rate. If you do not have health insurance, starting October 2013, the Affordable Care Act allows individuals to purchase insurance on the open market, and you cannot be denied health care based on previous or current health conditions.

Talk to friends, family, coworkers, and neighbors about HIV. Educate them that HIV infection is preventable. If infection does occur, the virus is manageable, even though there is no cure. Don't be confused by reports of cures; a few cases have been reported, but these were unique and extreme circumstances involving many factors. Ultimately, HIV is an illness like any other: No one should be ashamed or afraid to discuss their health or to seek appropriate care. Education and discussion can help end the misconceptions and stigma associated with HIV/AIDS. So, enjoy our beautiful city, know your HIV status, manage your status, negotiate safer sex practices, obtain access to health care test for other STIs, and start and continue the discussion about the realities of HIV. In doing so, you will alter the course and perception of HIV in your community, and the community as a whole. To locate HIV testing centers call 1.800.CDC.INFO or visit WWW.HIVTEST.ORG. Too, I am proud to tell you that Pride Medical offers free, anonymous HIV testing throughout the year.

THE

GAY MAN Black History Erased D. David Kinney, Digital Editor

President Barack Obama is giving the Presidential Medal of Freedom to a man some civil rights leaders wanted erased from history. August 28th marks the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. It was organized by a civil rights leader named Bayard Rustin who was directly responsible for its success. He’s the same man who introduced Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to the nonviolent protest methods of Mahatma Gandhi, and helped found both the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and the A. Philip Randolph Institute. So, why was Rustin erased from American civil rights history?

42 : August 29, 2013

FENUXE.COM : 43

“Bayard Rustin probably did more than any one individual to put the March on Washington together. It is a shame and a disgrace that he has not received the recognition he deserves. The only reason he failed to receive that recognition is because he was gay. He was openly gay and never tried to hide it,” Congressman John Lewis told FENUXE during a recent interview. Although civil rights demonstrations were taking place throughout the American South, the nation’s eyes were on Birmingham. Young Black Americans who were standing up and calling for civil rights were met with imprisonment and inhumane violence. “Hundreds and thousands of young people… children had been arrested and jailed trying to march through the streets of Birmingham to get downtown and protest at the department stores, lunch counters, and restaurants. The police commissioner, Eugene “Bull” Conner, used dogs on young children and women,” Congressman Lewis said. After the violence in Birmingham, President Kennedy addressed the nation and asked for calm and understanding. “He asked the nation how it would feel to walk in the shoes of the protesters or in the shoes of people of color who had been denied certain rights,”

Congressman Lewis remembered. However, the first NAACP field secretary in the state of Mississippi, Medgar Evers, was assassinated that same night.

"The only reason he failed to receive that recognition is because he was gay. He was openly gay and never tried to hide it."

Following Evers' death, “President Kennedy called together a group of us at the White House and we met with him. It was in that meeting that one of the leaders, [A. Philip Randolph, a labor leader], spoke up and said, ‘Mr. President, the Black masses are restless and we’re going to march on Washington.’ You could tell by President Kennedy’s body language he didn't like what he heard. He started moving in his chair and twisting around,” Congressman Lewis said. After considering what Randolph had just said, President Kennedy looked at him and asked, “‘If you bring all of these people to Washington won’t there be violence, chaos, and disorder?’ And Mr. Randolph said, ‘This will be an orderly, peaceful, nonviolent protest,’” Congressman Lewis continued. It was Bayard Rustin who ensured the March on Washington would be a nonviolent protest. Rustin had traveled around the world, specifically to India and Africa, where he learned about nonviolent protests and peaceful movements. “He believed in the way of peace, nonviolence, and the way of love. Dr. King needed someone who had a deep

understanding of the techniques, tactics, discipline, and philosophy of nonviolence. He played a major role in encouraging Dr. King to accept the way of Gandhi,” Congressman Lewis added.

We knew Mr. Randolph would select Bayard as his deputy because there was no one in the leadership more brilliant who could pull people together better than this man,” Congressman Lewis remarked.

However, Rustin was fighting for civil rights under unimaginably difficult circumstances. “To be gay during the 40s, 50s, and early 60s for a Black man in the leadership of a movement was hard. But he didn't let it get him down. He continued to work - day and night,” Congressman Lewis said. “Even during the discussion [about whether Rustin] should be the chair of the March on Washington, there were some Black leaders who said, ‘No, it would make [him] a leader and the Senators from the South would try to tarnish the March,’” Congressman Lewis explained.

Their plan worked and Randolph quickly picked Rustin as his deputy. However, Rustin was viciously attacked by Senators in the South like some leaders had feared. South Carolina Senator Strom Thurmond actively spoke out against Rustin calling him a, “Communist, draft-dodger, and homosexual.” Thurmond even showed Congress an FBI photo of Rustin and King talking in the bathroom. He suggested the photo showed that King and Rustin were lovers.

But Lewis knew they needed Rustin for the March on Washington to be a success. Lewis met with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and James Farmer to discuss what was happening to Rustin. “I watched Bayard in the meetings and I felt in my heart and my gut that he was being discriminated against. I've always felt that no one should be put down because of their race, color, nationality, or sexual orientation,” Congressman Lewis said.

Keeping their focus on the movement, Rustin and Randolph didn’t let the naysayers derail their efforts. “If it hadn't been for Bayard Rustin and A. Philip Randolph there wouldn't have been a March on Washington. On that day, according to the police and the National Park Service, about 250,000 people showed up, but I think it was one of the great undercounts of all time. I think it was many, many more. It was a sea of humanity,” Congressman Lewis said.

Lewis, Farmer and Dr. King devised a plan that would allow Rustin to help lead the March on Washington without being the chairman. “We made the decision that if they didn’t want Bayard we would select A. Philip Randolph to be the chair.

Less than a year after the March on Washington, the Civil Rights Act was enacted on July 2, 1964. Yet, the fight for equality was far from over. “I remember after Dr. King received the Nobel Peace Prize in December 1964, he came back to Washington and

FENUXE.COM : 45

had a meeting with President Johnson. He told him we need a voting rights act. President Johnson said, in so many words, ‘I just signed the Civil Rights Act, we don’t have the votes in the Congress to get a voting rights act passed.’ But he said to Dr. King, ‘Make me do it. Create the climate. Create the environment. Make me do it and I will sign it.’ And that’s what we did,” Congressman Lewis explained. Within months the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was enacted by the 89th U.S. Congress. Despite being an instrumental leader in America’s civil rights movement, Bayard Rustin remains largely unknown. Homophobia has kept his name out of the history books, but that is quickly changing. “We've made a lot of progress. He’s going to [posthumously] receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom and I’m so happy,” Congressman Lewis said. “It is so fitting. It is almost like history and fate coming together. The same year we’re celebrating the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington is the same year that Bayard Rustin will be honored by the President of the United States of America. It’s long overdue,” Congressman Lewis concluded. The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian award in the United States. Coincidentally, it was established in 1963 and replaced the Medal of Freedom created by President Truman for

civilians who aided in war efforts. Rustin’s partner, Walter Naegle, will accept the award from President Obama.

Bayard Rustin with Walter Naegel, his partner of ten years.

As our community works to further the gay equality movement, it is important that we learn from those who came before us. Bayard Rustin, Congressman Lewis, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and others created a climate in the 1960s that made change unavoidable. It’s time our community heeds President Johnson’s advice and we “make” our politicians protect our human rights.

Picture this: You are back in high school. It's your sophomore year and you’re walking the halls for the first time at a new school where you just transferred. The school looks attractive enough from the outside and is a bit on the larger side, but doesn't seem to be all that intimidating. Inside there are flyers posted along the walls showing all the different fun events that are coming up. Then you start looking in the classrooms you pass by and begin to realize something that is very different from your old school. You can't help but notice that room 1108 is filled with students who appear to be Latino, but maybe it just seems that way because you just got a quick glance. Then you look to your right in room 1115 and observe that it's full of black students. Room 1110 is full of boys who fit the "All-American" bill. And tucked away in 1119 at the end of the hall there’s a grouping of the school's outcasts who don't really seem to fit into any of the other groups and certainly don't seem to fit in together. Meanwhile, in the middle of this realization, you forget which room number 48 : August 29, 2013

you were assigned by the counselor in the front office. There you are: Standing in the middle of the hallway trying desperately to remember the correct classroom and wondering why the rooms you glimpsed seem so segregated. So, what do you do now? What would happen if you just walked into the room closest to you? Would the students in there know in an instant that you were new and in the wrong place even if the teacher welcomed you? Would you feel so uncomfortable that you

would just instinctively back out? Or, would you stay and just not talk to anyone for fear they might not like you and be rude? Now take that entire scenario and fast forward about 10 years. The new school becomes Atlanta and you’ve become a little older and wiser… Isn’t that right? So, why is Atlanta so segregated? Oh, don’t act all shocked. This isn’t news. If you check out the Cooper Center’s recently released Racial Dot Map and view Atlanta you’ll see what I mean. Atlanta is a segregated city.

CONSIDER THIS: Maybe it's because Atlantans are just scared. Maybe it’s because no matter how liberal a person may be, if they're originally from Georgia, then they were probably raised more on the Republican/ conservative side. You may not consciously agree with things you learned or saw when you were younger, but subconsciously those things still influence your decisions whether you realize it or not. People can be as open and accepting and liberal as they want, but your brain still has those memories catalogued. The key is how you use those memories and experiences. Are you a good witch or a hateful bitch? Do you embrace others as they are or demand that they conform to your liking before you can befriend them? The truth is, there's no reason to be scared of walking into a place you've never been before. People aren't nearly as mean as we expect them to be in our heads. Honestly, most people are too busy and wrapped up in their own lives to hate on you. So, if I can walk down Peachtree Street and see every kind of person imaginable, then why isn't it the same when I go to gay events? The only thing trapping us in "Old South" behaviors is ourselves. Snap out of your colorcoded actions and see everyone as the same!

Come on! Walk into a new place you've never been to ... no matter what type of people are there. If you’re a Bulldogs regular try Burkhart’s next week and vice versa. You’ll most likely end up having a blast and making some cool new friends who might teach you a thing or two. Atlanta has come a long way, but we’ve still got a long way to go. Sadly, I can’t even begin to tell you how many times I’ve heard someone say, “I’m not going there because of all of the blacks/whites/Latinos,” when I’m out about town. It’s infuriating to me and it makes me sad for the state of our city. One of the worst experiences happened during Atlanta Black Pride a few years ago. I was walking through the festival with two white friends and I was shocked by the number of rude comments hurled at them. One guy even said, “What the f*ck are those white boys doin here? This is supposed to be our time.”

atlanta's racial segregation is highlighted in this racial dot map from the Wheldon Cooper Center for public Service. White atlantans (shown as blue dots) are concentrated in the north and black atlantans (shown as green dots) are mostly in the south.

Seriously? What kind of idiot says that? It is time we wake up and grow up. Does that guy really want segregated Pride festivals? Perhaps I’m alone on an island and people agree with him, but I do not. It seems as if people are happy to reverse the painful progress we’ve made with self segregation. And sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who sees it.

In anticipation of this year’s Atlanta Black Gay Pride we asked Julius James, president and founder of Rockstars Productions, about this year’s festival. “The Pride festival is a dynamic opportunity to showcase the diversity and uniqueness of the black LGBT community. Aside from the revenue it provides the City of Atlanta, it also provides the LGBT community an opportunity to share with the world its greatness. It allows many to see our sexual orientation doesn't define our ability to contribute to the world. It provides a platform in which individuals can come together for education, celebration and acknowledgement of community leaders,” James said. Above all, James stresses that Atlanta Black Pride, “Symbolizes the richness and boldness of the LGBT community. It symbolizes progression within our demographic and fosters a spirit of unity beyond the LGBT community. I view it as an opportunity to unite individuals of various backgrounds and beliefs to celebrate their likes, differences and accomplishments.”

virgo [aUg. 23 – SEpT. 22]

Invite them over. Just do it. Things are tidy enough. On the 5th, you will enter a time of expansion in every area of your life. Stop prepping, start daring. Use your social acumen to turn your guests’ heads. Towards you.

libra [SEpT. 23 – OCT. 22] As the World turns, get nauseous, get with it, or get off. You are so busy constructing plots that you have neglected the shift in narrative. It is now the other person’s turn to speak. Ahem. That means just stop flapping your jaw for a second so you can actually hear. The 11th will be trying, know that go with the flow will serve you better than elaborate planning.

scorpio [OCT. 23 – NOV. 22] Time to chose-door number 1, 2, or 3. No, you may NOT have all three! Wash your hands of it all by the 15th, but make sure you use soap. Wouldn’t want any cross-contamination now, would we?

SAGITTARIUS [NOV. 23 – dEC. 21] Time for the harvest. All that planning and waiting is finally panning out, just wade through your goodies, collect, pay off those meager debts, and off you’ll be, raring for your new adventure on the 13th. Yes, the 13th. It will bring you great success if you are able to deliberate calmly.

66 : August 29, 2013

Capricorn [dEC. 22 – JaN. 19]

The 2nd of the month is time to pause, assess, hover, plunge, and come back up for some fresh air. Don’t just stand there gaping and panting. You must stay up more frequently and later to keep up with yourself. Don’t worry, it’s worth it, and so are you, sweets.

AQUARIUS [JaN. 20 – FEB. 18] You are finally beginning to balance things again. Stop saying “YES” when you mean “No!” Your business acumen has fizzled just a tiny bit, so use the slack to catch up with all the frills and frolics you’ve been neglecting. On the 4th, be aware of how simple slights can easily get blown out of proportion.

PISCES [FEB. 19 – MaR. 20] Now is the time to take a deep breathe, plant yourself on Terra Firma, and breathe! Spiff up, tune up and turn on from the 6th-8th. Don’t look over your shoulder unless you want to find someone gaping at you.

ARIES [MaR. 21 – apR. 19] The time has come to melt. Gently, gingerly, and sweetly dedicate yourself to the one you love. The 14th and 15th are particularly auspicious for dreaming and lolling. Kick back, rest a bit, and prepare to kick butt!

Taurus [apR. 20 – May 20] There are times for all of us where we get down on ourselves, sometimes others. Your festive mood will blow away any resentments you’ve been harboring. Careful with your step on the 1st. Start with baby steps, don’t trip, baby! Look for those who will give you the balance and support you need.

GemIni [May 21 – JUN. 22] Doll, it’s not a marathon. It’s not even a race--it’s your life. Start by taking yourself seriously, others will follow your lead. Despite the word out there, you are not a flake. You just know how to have fun, and sometimes you get a little bawdy. It matters not a whit whether they are jealous or not--their opinions of you are none of your business. Stick it out on the 12th-13th--it’ll be worth waiting for.

CANCER [JUN. 21 – JUl. 22] After having been THE center of attention for months now, pat yourself on the back, put your your feet up, and start plotting for your next coup. Your minions fawn on you, your demons are content and out to lunch--find someone you know who is going through a dry patch and give them the support they need on the 4th.

LEO [JUl. 23 – aUg. 22] Although this seems like the perfect time to push the envelope, push yourself, your cohort, your ideas, your staff--DON’T DO IT! They (and you) need a little downtime, some me time, just a little bit of soothing, pampering and R&R. That means Rest and Relaxation, Dear One, NOT Rock ‘n’ Roll. Ouch.

Holler Poodles!! The next phase of the Fenuxe program I want to talk about is therapy. Since this is a whole health approach to getting well, healing the mind is as important as healing the body. Many may say “I don’t need therapy” and while I can respect everyone’s decision, I think everyone can learn from the experience. It never hurts to have an educated person totally in your corner! Therapy is a great sounding board. A friend once shared a story with me that made perfect sense to me and I kinda lived by it for a long time. The story goes “In this world there are people who are eagles and people who are crows. And while the crows may want to fly as high as the eagles, they never will. And as a result, what do the crows do? They talk talk talk about the eagles because that’s all they can do. And the eagles never listen because they’re flying so high they don’t hear the chatter.” My friend said “Richard, you’re an eagle, you don’t have to listen to all the drama, just do your thing.” And that’s how I behaved for years and years--because it made sense to me and because I didn’t know how else to deal with all the drama. When I talked to my therapist about this, she calmly disagreed. She said the problem with that story is that it creates the perception that someone is better than someone else. It also leaves the other person feeling unheard and unvalidated. Most times someone just needs someone else to listen to them. They may not be asking for your input or for you to solve their problem, they just want to be heard. By not listening to them, it creates a feeling of “he thinks he’s better than me.” LIGHT BULB!! Wow! I was so wrong! While it was never my intention to hurt anyone, it was a conscious decision of mine to stay away from drama. Now I realize people just want to be heard. I don’t have to solve their problem. I can just listen. For all of you drag aficionados, I’d like you to check out a new exhibit. Legendary Children captures the art, the joy, and the weirdness of the East Atlanta Drag Community at a bright, hopeful moment. These queens are ready to conquer their 68 : August 29, 2013

hometown and their world through drag--and they may just do it. With a drag renaissance led by the immaculate Rupaul, drag has transformed into a powerful way for the queer community to connect with and critique society. Legendary Children documents and celebrates these young, creative, and subversive drag performers as they begin their careers. The photo show will run from September 1 - October 1 at Gallery 1526 in Atlanta. The closing reception on Saturday, September 28 will feature performances by the queens featured in the exhibit.
