From Chicago to Maastricht: a tour of the Meetings attended by the IOFV The best ophthalmology demands a constant updating of knowledge and the incorporation of state-of-the-art techniques and technologies, provided that these have been adequately proven and translate into significant improvement for the patients. American Academy of Ophthalmology At the end of 2016, the Instituto Oftalmológico Fernández-Vega attended as a guest the annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, one of the most prestigious of the world. SECOIR (Toledo) Bajo el título “Fundamentos de Córnea y Cirugía Faco-Implanto-Refractiva”, Toledo acogió en enero un nuevo curso de actualización para MIR y POSTMIR de la Sociedad Española de Cirugía Ocular Implanto-Refractiva (SECOIR). Entre los ponentes se encontraban tres profesionales del Instituto: el Dr. José F. Alfonso, el Dr. Andrés Fernández‑Vega y el Profesor Luis Fernández-Vega; los tres en la imagen superior.

SECOIR (Toledo) Under the title “Fundamentos de Córnea y Cirugía Faco-Implanto-Refractiva” (Fundamentals of the Cornea and Phaco and Implantation Refractive Surgery), Toledo hosted in January a new updating course for Resident Medical Interns (RMI) and Post-RMI belonging to the Sociedad Española de Cirugía Ocular Implanto-Refractiva (Spanish Society of Implant‑Refractive Ocular Surgery - SECOIR in Spanish). Amongst the speakers were three professionals of the Institute: Dr José F. Alfonso, Dr Andrés Fernández‑Vega and Professor Luis Fernández-Vega; the three of them can be seen above.

V Reunión de Vitrectomía El Centro de Congresos de Elche acogió el pasado 20 de enero la V Reunión de Vitrectomía, que organiza cada dos años el Hospital General de Elche. Entre los ponentes invitados estuvo el Dr. Álvaro Fernández-Vega, arriba en la imagen, que expuso primero sobre “Mácula en Domo” y participó después en una mesa redonda sobre posibles complicaciones en la cirugía vitreoretiniana.

V Vitrectomy Meeting The Conference Cenrte in Elche hosted last January 20 the V Vitrectomy Meeting, organised every two years by the Hospital General de Elche. Amongst the invited lecturers was Dr Álvaro Fernández-Vega, above, who first talked about “Dome-shaped Macula” and then participated in a round table on potential complications in vitreoretinal surgery.

El profesor Luis Fernández-Vega y el Dr. José F. Alfonso participaron como ponentes en la XLIII reunión de la Sociedad Gallega de Oftalmología, en la que se centraron en dos temas fundamentales: las lentes multifocales y el queratocono. Este encuentro tuvo lugar en Santiago de Compostela a finales de enero.
Como cada año, el Instituto Oftalmológico Fernández-Vega estuvo también presente en FacoElche, una reunión científica dedicada a la cirugía facorrefractiva y, en especial, a los procedimientos quirúrgicos sobre el cristalino. Durante su decimonovena edición, además de contar con las ponencias del Dr. José F. Alfonso y del Profesor Luis Fernández-Vega, se rindió homenaje al profesor Barraquer, fallecido en 2016 y muy vinculado a FacoElche y que, en su día, recibió la medalla de oro del Instituto.

Sociedad Gallega de Oftalmología
Professor Luis Fernández-Vega and Dr José F. Alfonso participated as lecturers in the XLIII meeting of the Galician Society of Ophthalmology, where they focused on two main issues: multifocal lenses and keratoconus. This meeting took place in Santiago de Compostela at the end of January. Above, the Professor during his lecture.
As every year, the Instituto Oftalmológico Fernández-Vega was also present at FacoElche, a scientific meeting devoted to phaco-refractive surgery and, especially, to surgical procedures on the crystalline. During its nineteenth edition, besides the lectures by Dr José F. Alfonso and Professor Luis Fernández-Vega, tribute was paid to professor Barraquer, who passed away in 2016 and who was closely linked to FacoElche; he had also received the golden medal of the Institute. 21ª Reunión de invierno de la ESCRS
El Dr. Luis Fernández-Vega Cueto-Felgueroso, que se encuentra en Londres realizando un fellowship de córnea en el Moorfields Eye Hospital, asistió el 4 de febrero a un congreso en Birmingham, donde coincidió con el profesor Dua (en el centro de la imagen), que hace unos años descubrió una nueva capa corneal, denominada “Capa Dua” en honor a su nombre. El Dr. Fernández-Vega también estuvo acompañado por Francesco Aiello (en la foto, a la derecha), compañero de fellowship.
A mediados de febrero, los Dres. Carlos Lisa y Jesús Merayo acudieron al 21º Congreso Europeo de Invierno de la Sociedad de Córnea, Catarata y Refractiva, celebrado en Maastricht. El Dr. Lisa participó en un simposio joven sobre las complicaciones de la cirugía de catarata y concretamente sobre el manejo del vítreo. Por su parte, el Dr. Jesús Merayo impartió una ponencia sobre córnea, bajo el título “Pruebas de laboratorio para enfermedades de la superficie ocular”.

Birmingham Dr Luis Fernández-Vega Cueto-Felgueroso, who’s now in London undergoing a fellowship in cornea at Moorfields Eye Hospital, attended last 4th of February a meeting in Birmingham, where he saw Professor Dua, who years ago discovered a new corneal layer named “Dua Layer” after him. Dr Fernández-Vega was also accompanied by Francesco Aiello (photo, right), a fellowship colleague. In the photo above, the three physicians during the Meeting.

21th ESCRS Winter Meeting Mid February, Drs Carlos Lisa and Jesús Merayo attended the XXI European Winter Meeting of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons held in Maastricht. Dr Lisa participated in a young symposium about the complications in cataract surgery, specifically on the management of the vitreous. As for Dr Jesús Merayo, he led a lecture on cornea under the title “Lab tests for ocular surface diseases”. In the image above, Dr Lisa during his intervention.
