Quiénes somos About us

El Instituto Oftalmológico Fernández‑Vega (IOFV) es un Hospital Monográfico de Oftalmología El apellido Fernández‑Vega está ligado a la práctica de esta especialidad médica desde hace ya 130 años. Hoy por hoy, en el Instituto se dedican todos los esfuerzos a la prevención, diagnóstico y tratamiento médico y quirúrgico de las enfermedades que comprometen la visión.

Las instalaciones del Instituto en Oviedo ocupan una superficie de unos 12.000 m2, donde trabajan alrededor de 200 personas.

Cada año se atiende a más de 100.000 pacientes y se realizan 8.000 cirugías.

Para mantenerse a la cabeza en innovación y devolver así a la sociedad parte de lo recibido de sus pacientes, el IOFV ha impulsado la Fundación de Investigación Oftalmológica (FIO), donde se realiza investigación biomédica traslacional en oftalmología y ciencias de la visión y que cuenta con la generosa colaboración de otras entidades y fundaciones comprometidas en la lucha contra la enfermedad.

Toda esta actividad genera una gran capacidad docente para

The Instituto Oftalmológico Fernández‑Vega (IOFV) is an Eye Hospital The Instituto Oftalmológico Fernández-Vega (IOFV) is an Eye Hospital. The surname Fernández-Vega has been linked to the practice of this speciality for 130 years. At present, the Institute devotes all its efforts to the prevention, diagnosis and medical and surgical treatment of those diseases that jeopardise vision.

Currently, the facilities of the Institute in Oviedo occupy a surface area of approximately 12 000 square metres, in which close 200 people work. Every year over 100 000 patients are seen and 8 000 surgeries are performed.

In order to stay ahead in innovation and to return to society part of what its patients have given to the Institute, the IOFV has launched the Fundación de Investigación Oftalmológica (FIO) (Eye Research Foundation). The Foundation carries out biomedical translational research in ophthalmology and vision sciences in conjunction with the generous contribution of other entities and foundations committed to the fight against this disease.

El Dr. Luis Fernández-Vega Cueto-Felgueroso presidió el Comité de Organización del II Congreso Europeo de Jóvenes Oftalmólogos, que tuvo lugar en Oviedo durante el 24 y 25 de Junio y al que acudieron casi 600 oftalmólogos de más de 30 países para actualizar sus conocimientos en varias especialidades de la oftalmología: cristalino y catarata; córnea y cirugía refractiva; glaucoma y retina.

La primera vez que se celebró esta reunión fue en 2014 en la ciudad de Oporto, esta segunda edición ha sido en Oviedo y dentro de dos años acontecerá en Cracovia, Polonia.

Además de los 600 doctores, también asistieron a esta reunión el presidente de la Sociedad Europea de Oftalmología, Jan Tjeerd de Faber, y el de la Sociedad Española de Oftalmología, José Luis Encinas.

Por su parte, el alcalde de Oviedo, Wenceslao López, manifestó, en el acto de inauguración del Congreso, que la investigación “ha de ser uno de los motores de desarrollo de nuestra sociedad, por lo que el papel de los jóvenes investigadores ha de ser protagonista”.

Asimismo, agradeció al Instituto Fernández-Vega “su labor constante en favor del desarrollo de nuevas iniciativas de innovación” y añadió: “estoy seguro de que las ponencias y debates de este encuentro serán un punto de arranque para avanzar en nuevas terapias que redunden en beneficio de todos”.

DESARROLLO DE LAS JORNADAS Durante las dos jornadas se abordaron de forma genérica todos los campos fundamentales de la Oftalmología. De hecho, los integrantes del Comité Organizador: Álvaro Fidalgo, Daniel González, Diana Urbaneja, Elena Quiroga, Ignacio Rodríguez, Irene Garzo, Jorge Ruiz, Leticia Salcedo y Mercedes Serrador y el presidente del mismo, el ya citado Luis Fernández-Vega Cueto-Felgueroso, fueron quienes establecieron los temas propuestos, basándose en los aspectos que más interesan y preocupan a los jóvenes oftalmólogos.

Luis Fernández‑Vega Cueto-Felgueroso presided the Organising Committee of the II European Meeting of Young Ophthalmologists that took place in Oviedo on June 24 and 25 and which gathered nearly 600 ophthalmologists from over 30 countries to update their knowledge in different specialties within ophthalmology: crystalline and cataract; cornea and refractive surgery; glaucoma and retina.

The meeting first took place in 2014 in Oporto, this second edition has taken place in Oviedo and in two years time it will take place in Krakow, Poland.

As well as 600 physicians, the President of the European Society of Ophthalmology, Jan Tjeerd de Faber, and the President of the Sociedad Española de Oftalmología (Spanish Society of Ophthalmology), José Luis Encinas, were also present.

The mayor of Oviedo, Wenceslao López, said during the opening ceremony of the Meeting, that research “must be one of the driving forces of the development of our society, the role of young researchers is therefore crucial”.

En este sentido, se habló de los exámenes que tienen que superar los jóvenes estudiantes de Oftalmología; de lo importante que es tener una tesis doctoral; de haber estudiado o recibido algún curso en el extranjero; así como de lo fundamental que es dominar el inglés, de todas las posibilidades profesionales existentes y, en general, de todo lo que hay que hacer para formarse adecuadamente.

El director médico del Instituto y Jefe del Servicio de Oftalmología del Hospital Central de Asturias (HUCA), el profesor Fernández-Vega, ha destacado la mayor precisión y seguridad que ofrece el láser de femtosegundo en la cirugía de catarata, en el encuentro ‘Femtophaco Summit’, que organizó Alcon el pasado mes de julio en Coimbra (Portugal) y al que acudieron prestigiosos oftalmólogos para analizar los últimos avances en cirugía de cristalino.

El también Catedrático de Oftalmología de la Universidad de Oviedo, resaltó “la tranquilidad” que ofrece al profesional el uso de esta tecnología, “ya que simplifica y hace más fácil la intervención, sobre todo en los casos más complejos. Además, para el paciente “ofrece mayor seguridad, una recuperación más rápida y la confianza de saber que se está utilizando la última tecnología disponible”.

La capital danesa ha sido este año escenario de tres prestigiosos congresos, organizados por la Sociedad Europea de Especialistas en Retina (EURETINA); la Sociedad Europea de Catarata y Cirugía Refractiva (ESCRS) y la Sociedad Europea de Córnea y Superficie Ocular (EUCORNEA). Se trata de los encuentros más importantes en el mundo para los profesionales en estas especialidades.

El Dr. Álvaro Fernández‑Vega Sanz habló sobre “mácula en cúpula”, una enfermedad que puede darse en los pacientes miopes de alta graduación.

En EURETINA, el subdirector médico del Instituto y director de la unidad de retina y vítreo, el Dr. Álvaro Fernández-Vega, realizo una exposición sobre “mácula en cúpula”. Alfonso, director de la unidad de córnea y cristalino del Instituto, comentó los resultados obtenidos al implantar este tipo de lentes en pacientes con miopía, astigmatismo e hipermetropía.

El Dr. Andrés Fernández-Vega Cueto-Felgueroso, presidente de la Asociación de Jóvenes Oftalmólogos Un objetivo es conseguir incrementar el número de miembros de la Asociación, que en la actualidad cuenta con 160 socios.

El doctor también representará a los residentes de Oftalmología en la Comisión Nacional de la especialidad durante los próximos dos años.

El Doctor Andrés Fernández-Vega Cueto‑Felgueroso, miembro de la quinta generación de oftalmólogos de la familia, ha sido designado, por la Junta Directiva de la Sociedad Española de Oftalmología (SEO), presidente de la Asociación de Jóvenes Oftalmólogos Españoles (AJOE) junto al Dr. EN ESPAÑA Gonzalo García de Oteyza.

La SEO creó AJOE hace ya tres años con la intención de fomentar la participación científica de los residentes de oftalmología en las reuniones nacionales. Hoy, la Asociación cuenta con unos 160 socios entre los 450 jóvenes oftalmólogos que están en el periodo de residencia. Por lo que el objetivo de los nuevos presidentes es conseguir que el número de miembros se incremente.

Los beneficios que tienen los asociados en AJOE son los siguientes: solo pagan la mitad de la cuota que corresponde a ser socio en la SEO; tienen un precio especial en la inscripción al Congreso de esta sociedad y reciben gratuitamente todos los libros que se dan en el mismo. The Instituto Oftalmológico Fernández-Vega presented a new morphologic classification for keratoconus that facilitates the treatment of this pathology at the 92nd Meeting of the Sociedad Española de Oftalmología (SEO – Spanish Society of Ophthalmology) that took place from 21-24 September in Málaga. En ella, el Profesor comentó los retos de consolidación del láser del femtosegundo en la cirugía de la catarata, puesto que el Instituto es pionero en el uso de este instrumento, mientras que el Dr. Alfonso explicó los criterios y técnicas más adecuadas para sustituir una lente intraocular por otra.

La SEO distinguió a tres doctores del Instituto en este Congreso.

Al Dr. Alfonso le otorgó el Premio Castroviejo, mediante el que reconoció sus más de 30 años de actividad clínica en el campo de la córnea y cristalino, así como su labor investigadora y docente.

Los dos hijos del Profesor Fernández-Vega también fueron distinguidos. El Dr. Andrés fue nombrado presidente de la AJOE, relevando en este cargo a su hermano, el Dr. Luis, quién ganó la Beca de la subespecialidad de esta Asociación de Jóvenes Oftalmólogos.

Por último, la SEO ha encomendado al Profesor y al Dr. Alfonso la realización de la ponencia oficial para 2020 sobre el tema cirugía refractiva del cristalino.

RECOGNITIONS AT SEO The SEO recognised three physicians from the Institute at this meeting. Dr Alfonso received the Castroviejo Award in recognition of his over 30 years of clinical activity in the field of cornea and crystalline, as well as for his research and teaching work.

The two sons of Professor Fernández-Vega were also distinguished. Dr Andrés was appointed president of the AJOE, following in his brother’s steps. Dr Luis won the grant of the subspecialty of this Association of Young Ophthalmologists.

En este sentido, el Dr. Alfonso, que cuenta con más de 30 años de carrera profesional, destaca por sus importantes investigaciones en el campo de la córnea y cristalino, así como por su actividad docente, pues también es Profesor Titular de la Universidad de Oviedo. El Dr. Alfonso es Licenciado en Medicina y Cirugía por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid (1981), Doctorado en Medicina y Cirugía y especialista en Oftalmología desde 1988. Tres años después, en 1991, obtuvo su plaza de profesor titular de Oftalmología en la Universidad de Oviedo, donde obtuvo la superespecialidad de Córnea y Cristalino, a la que se dedica en su puesto de trabajo actual.

Es autor de múltiples libros y publicaciones, así como de numerosas presentaciones en congresos nacionales e internacionales. Además, ha sido presidente de la Sociedad Española de Cirugía Ocular Implanto Refractiva (SECOIR), así como miembro de las Sociedades Oftalmológicas nacionales e internacionales más importantes.

“Uno de cada dos pacientes con orzuelos sufre rosácea ocular”, explica el Dr. Merayo “Es fundamental realizar revisiones periódicas para detectar enfermedades irreversibles como el glaucoma”, asevera el Dr. Riaño. Ambos doctores, junto con el Dr. Yllera, acudieron en diferentes tardes al programa de la TPA “De hoy no pasa” para ofrecer estas y otras advertencias sobre salud ocular.

Ojos secos, orzuelos de repetición o problemas en la conjuntiva son algunos de los síntomas de la rosácea ocular. Así lo explicaba el Dr. Merayo en su intervención durante el programa de la TPA “De hoy no pasa”, donde acudió como experto invitado. “Una enfermedad como esta, a priori banal, tiene un 5 % de enfermos con visiones cercanas a la ceguera”, apunta el doctor del IOFV. Se trata de una enfermedad fácil de diagnosticar por un médico de cabecera. “El borde del

párpado está inflamado, enrojecido y engrosado”, explica el doctor. Además, el 80-90 % de los pacientes que tiene rosácea en la cara, la tienen también en los ojos. “No ocurre así al revés”, apunta Merayo.

Entre sus tratamientos, el doctor señala los preventivos. “Evitar los tóxicos: alejarse del humo del tabaco, evitar la ingesta de alcohol y no utilizar maquillaje”, explica.

Además, recomienda aplicar calor local y masajear y limpiar el borde del párpado al menos dos veces al día.

Por su parte, el Dr. Riaño acudió al espacio de la TPA para hablar del glaucoma, “una neuropatía óptica que es crónica y progresiva y que, a la larga, provoca la reducción del campo de visión”. No en vano se habla de ella como la ceguera silenciosa.

“Se reduce el campo de visión de una forma tan lenta, tan lenta, que el paciente no se da cuenta hasta que está en una fase muy avanzada”, señala el doctor del IOFV.

Dry eyes, recurrent sties or problems in the conjunctiva are some of the symptoms of ocular rosacea. This was Dr Merayo explanation during his participation in the TPA programme “De hoy no pasa”, where he attended as invited guest. “A disease such as this one, a priori banal, has 5 % of patients with vision close to blindness”, says the physician from the IOFV. A family doctor can easily diagnose this disease.

“The edge of the eyelid is swollen, red and thickened,” explains the physician. Furthermore, 80-90 % of the patients who have rosacea on their faces also have it on their eyes. “This is not the case the other way round,” stated Merayo.

Su principal tratamiento son los colirios. “En una segunda fase tendríamos el láser y, por último, la cirugía”, cuenta.

Uno es candidato a hacer un láser y otro a poner una lente”, detalla el doctor.

Dicho esto, y según apunta el propio doctor, cada vez son más los pacientes que se operan de alguna de estas tres alteraciones del sistema óptico –miopía, hipermetropía y astigmatismo. “Por el tipo de vida que llevamos, donde existen determinados trabajos que tienen unos baremos visuales muy exigentes, la gente es cada vez más proclive a operarse”, asegura.

La pasión por la oftalmología de un hombre bueno Nieto, hijo, padre y abuelo de oftalmólogos. Álvaro Fernández-Vega representaba hasta este pasado 22 de agosto en que fallecía en Oviedo a los 91 años, a cinco generaciones -junto a su hermano Luis constituyó la terceraque han sido testigos y actores principales del desarrollo de una especialidad médica que en España ha alcanzado, en los últimos años, un grado de excelencia equiparable al de los países más avanzados del mundo en la materia.

Formado en Madrid, profundizaría en las subespecialidades de retina y estrabismo en distintas estancias en Nueva York de la mano del Dr. Castroviejo y en Barcelona con el Dr. Castanera, y ejercería siempre su profesión en Asturias, donde supo compaginar la docencia universitaria con el ejercicio de la medicina pública -fue jefe del servicio de oftalmología del principal hospital de la regióny con el desarrollo de la clínica Fernández-Vega heredada de sus mayores, y que alcanzaría a ver transformada en un Instituto Oftalmológico que atiende a más de cien mil pacientes todos los

años, ya de la mano de la cuarta generación y con una quinta que se va incorporando de forma paulatina.

Persona discreta y concienzuda, hizo del amor a la familia y a su profesión los ejes de su vida, y en los dos alcanzó los mejores resultados.

En el primer apartado, su mujer, Conchi, y sus seis hijos -que le han dado 16 nietos- son la mejor demostración, pero no le queda a la zaga el que cuatro de esos hijos se hayan decantado por la oftalmología, y junto a otra hija anestesista, tengamos la fortuna de disponer de su concurso profesional en el Instituto que lleva el apellido familiar. Álvaro contribuyó -junto a su hermano, mi padre Luis- a afianzar una forma personalizada de entender la medicina en unos tiempos que parecían llamados a despersonalizar esta debido a los grandes avances tecnológicos.

Álvaro Fernández-Vega represented until his death in Oviedo last 22nd of August at the age of 91, five generations – he embodied the third generation together with his brother Luis – that have been witness and leading actors of the development of a medical specialty that has achieved in the last few years in Spain a degree of excellence comparable to that of more advanced countries in the matter.

Trained in Madrid, he dove into the subspecialties of retina and strabismus in different fellowships in New York with Dr Castroviejo and in Barcelona with Dr Castanera. He always prac-

tised in Asturias, where he was able to reconcile university teaching with the practice of public medicine – he was head of the ophthalmology department of the main hospital of the region – and with the development of the Fernández-Vega practice inherited from his seniors, which he lived to see transformed into an Ophthalmology Institute that treats over one hundred thousand patients every year, now led by the fourth generation and with a fifth gradually incorporating.

A discreet and conscientious person, he made the love to his family and to his profession the

Álvaro contributed - together with his brother, my father Luis – to strengthen a customised way of understanding medicine at a time when it seemed they had to depersonalise it due to the great advances in technology. My cousins and I, heirs of these values, strive together with the great team that surrounds us to have this attitude guide our profession and constitute a relevant sign of identity in a daily work that will always be the debtor of an exceptional professional career and an example of generosity and closeness.

The recognition he has received, and the countless displays of affection that his family receives, proves that he has not lived in vain.

El oftalmólogo que no quiso ser ingeniero Pocos saben que el excepcional médico que fue Álvaro Fernández-Vega Diego cursó dos años de ingeniería naval antes de decidirse por la que sería su profesión y la de su hermano Luis.

Fueron sus años universitarios de una intensidad fuera de lo común. Dispuesto a recuperar “el tiempo perdido”, se matriculaba en los cursos de dos en dos, y estudiaba no menos de 10 horas diarias para asombro de su otro hermano Manuel, con quien coincidió en la Universidad San Carlos de Madrid y completaría su formación como becario del doctor Castroviejo.

Junto a su hermano Luis, fundaría la clínica de Uria3, en Oviedo y ya en el actual Instituto coordinaría la puesta en marcha de los departamentos de Oftalmología Pediatría y Estrabología.

De carácter en extremo afable, siempre quiso ocupar un lugar discreto al lado de su hermano oftalmólogo, con quien formaría un equipo que no se separaba ni incluso en vacaciones y a quien definió como “el engra-

naje perfecto en la difícil maquinaria de la convivencia”.

Y es que para Álvaro Fernández-Vega Diego la familia lo era todo. De su mujer, Conchi, lo recibía todo sin pedir nada, y solo sentía el tiempo que a ella le “robaba” su profesión y de sus hijos no podía sentirse más orgulloso con razón.

Amaba la música y la pintura, amén de la naturaleza -ese gen tan común a los Fernández-Vega- y enamorado y comprometido con su tierra y ciudad, recibió en 2004 la Medalla de Oro de Oviedo, distinción que sumó a otras muchas entre las que destaca la Cruz de Plata de la Orden del Merito del Cuerpo de la Guardia Civil. Miembro de diversas Academias profesionales españolas y extranjeras, deja tras sí el mejor de los ejemplos, personal y profesional.

The ophthalmologist who did not want to be an engineer Few know that the exceptional doctor Álvaro Fernández-Vega Diego studied two years on naval engineering before deciding on what would be his profession and that of his brother Luis. His university years were uncommonly intense. He wanted to make up for his “lost time”, so he enrolled two years at a time, he studied no less than 10 hours per day to the astonishment of his brother Manuel, with whom he coincided at Universidad San Carlos de Madrid, and finished his studies as an intern for Dr Castroviejo.

As his brother Luis would do later on, he often travelled to USA to, in his case, attend surgical sessions at the New York Eye and Ear Hospital and specialise in Ocular Plastic Surgery, and later on in Strabismus and Paediatric Ophthalmology in Barcelona and Belgium.

Professional links from his training years would become close friendships, which meant visits from renowned ophthalmologists to the clinical practice in Oviedo, like for example that of Frank Nesi, with whom he performed surgical sessions both in Detroit and in Asturias.

Associate teacher at the Faculty of Medicine in Oviedo, he was head of the Ophthalmology Department at Hospital General de Asturias.

Together with his brother Luis, he established the practice at Uria3, in Oviedo and in the current Institute he coordinated the start-up of the departments of Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus.

Extremely kindly disposed, he always wanted to hold a discreet position next to his ophthalmologist brother, with whom he

made a team that would even spend together its holidays and whom he described as “the perfect gear in the difficult mechanism of coexistence”.

For Álvaro Fernández-Vega Diego family was everything.

He received everything from his wife Conchi without the need to ask for anything, and only regretted the time that his profession “stole” from her. He could not be any prouder of his children, and justly so.

He loved music, art and nature – that gen common to all the Fernández-Vega – and was in love and committed to his land and his city. In 2004 he receives the Gold Medal of Oviedo, distinction that he added to a many others amongst which we can highlight the Silver Cross of the Order of Merit awarded by the Guardia Civil. Member of different national and international professional Academies, he leaves behind the best of personal and professional examples.

For the Instituto Fernández-Vega he will always be an exceptional mirror in which to look into, and for his family, an unforgettable reference and model for the present and future generations. *With information from the book: “Los Fernández-Vega. In memorian Miguel F. Refojo El científico gallego Miguel Refojo falleció el pasado julio en Estados Unidos. Era Doctor Honoris Causa por la Universidad de Santiago de Compostela y Miembro de la Real Academia de Farmacia. Sus trabajos de investigación, refrendados con cientos de publicaciones, libros y patentes han sido trasladados a la industria como lentes de contacto, polímeros y siliconas para la cirugía del desprendimiento de retina, sustitutos del humor vítreo, formulaciones para vehiculación de fármacos y sistemas diagnósticos para caracterizar la lágrima.

En 1959, se fue a investigar a Yale y más tarde al Eye Research Institute de la Universidad de Harvard, donde se jubiló, y desde donde siempre ejerció una especial tutela sobre los estudiantes españoles, muchos de los cuales ejercen hoy importantes responsabilidades docentes y científicas.

Miguel Refojo, scientist from Galicia, Spain, died last July in the United States of America. He had an Honorary Doctorate by the Universidad de Santiago de Compostela and was a member of the Real Academia de Farmacia (Royal Academy of Pharmacy). His research work, endorsed by hundreds of papers, books and patents has been translated into the industry as contact lenses, polymers and silicones for retinal detachment surgery, substitutes for vitreous humour, formulations for vehiculisation of drugs and diagnostic systems to characterise tears.

In 1959 he started his research in Yale and later on at the Eye Research Institute of Harvard University, where he retired, and where he always exercised a special protection of the Spanish students, many of which now have major teaching and scientific responsibilities.

Susana del Olmo logra la máxima calificación con su tesis sobre neuroprotección en enfermedades degenerativas La investigación abre una nueva vía en el tratamiento del glaucoma y supone un avance en el tratamiento de otras enfermedades degenerativas del sistema nervioso central.

La investigadora Susana del Olmo Aguado defendió, el pasado 25 de julio en el salón de actos del Instituto Universitario Fernández-Vega (IUFV), su tesis doctoral titulada “Papel de la mitocondria en la patogénesis del glaucoma y neuroprotección”. Hoy el glaucoma es la primera causa de ceguera irreversible en el mundo y se trata reduciendo la presión intraocular.

La Tesis, que ha sido dirigida por el Prof.

Neville Osborne y el Prof. Jesús Merayo, ha logrado la máxima calificación del tribunal. La Dra. del Olmo ha presentado sus estudios basados en cómo hacer que las células que se dañan en el glaucoma (células ganglionares de la retina) puedan dejar de morir y tener una supervivencia más larga mediante el empleo de factores que protegen la parte de la célula que le da energía (las mitocondrias).

Para ello podría modularse la luz que entra al ojo (dejando pasar la que protege y bloqueando la que hace daño) o con fármacos como la rapamicina. Sus investigaciones tienen también importancia para el abordaje de otras enfermedades degenerativas del sistema nervioso central.

GLAUCOMA El glaucoma es una enfermedad progresiva y crónica que produce daños en el nervio óptico que es el que transmite la información desde la retina al cerebro, por lo que si sufre daños provoca una pérdida de visión. Esta patología se debe a la disminución progresiva de fibras nerviosas del mismo. Esto ocurre porque el humor acuoso (líquido que se encuentra en la parte interna del ojo) tiene dificultad para salir del interior del ojo, por lo que se rompe el equilibrio entre producción y salida. La resistencia a la salida del humor acuoso provoca un aumento de la presión intraocular, que es el principal factor de riesgo para el desarrollo de esta enfermedad.

El presente trabajo sienta las bases a nuevas vías de tratamiento para el glaucoma abordando estrategias neuroprotectoras para la retina.

En resumen, esta tesis doctoral señala cómo la modulación de la función mitocondrial puede suponer un avance en nuevos tratamientos y además muestra dos estrategias neuroprotectoras potenciales para un correcto abordaje terapéutico del glaucoma y con implicaciones en otras enfermedades neurodegenerativas. Operado de cataratas un residente del Sanatorio Marítimo La intervención fue posible gracias a la labor de la Fundación, que ya desplazó en junio a un equipo de médicos hasta el centro gijonés para que revisaran la salud ocular de todos los residentes.

Como ya publicó el pasado número de VEGA, un equipo médico de la Fundación Fernández-Vega se desplazó, el pasado mes de junio, al Sanatorio Marí-

timo de Gijón para realizar alrededor de treinta revisiones, con el objetivo de facilitar el acceso a servicios y prestaciones oftalmológicas a personas y colectivos desfavorecidos.

La importante labor que realiza la Fundación es posible gracias a los recursos que aportan entidades y colaboradores anónimos que favorecen la salud visual de personas sin recursos.

Gracias a estas exploraciones, se detectaron la necesidad de gafas en algunos residentes de este centro de Atención a Personas con Discapacidad Intelectual y se diagnosticaron otros casos más severos que se derivaron al Instituto para su valoración. Entre estos pacientes, se encuentra Francisco Javier Canellada, que padecía de cataratas, por lo que fue intervenido por el Dr. Ignacio Blázquez.

As we already informed on our last issue of VEGA, a medical team of the Fundación Fernández-Vega visited last June the facilities of the Sanatorio Marítimo in Gijón to carry out approximately 30 eye check-ups to its residents. Thus, the Foundation continues its aim to facilitate access to services and eye services to disadvantaged individuals and collectives.

Thanks to these examinations, the professionals detected a need for glasses on some patients of this centre and some more sever cases that were refe-

Nueve miembros de la plantilla del IOFV se desplazaron el pasado 13 de octubre hasta Mieres para realizar revisiones gratuitas de la vista a todo aquel que quiso acercarse hasta la plaza del Ayuntamiento. En total, atendieron a más de 200 personas y se diagnosticaron en su mayoría cataratas y defectos refractivos.

Así son las diez mujeres que forman el equipo de auxiliares de clínica del Instituto Oftalmológico Fernández-Vega.

Susana, Conchita, Laura, Clara, Arantxa, Aurora, Elena, Alicia y Gloria, todas ellas, bajo la dirección de Mary, son el equipo de ángeles de la guarda que cada día custodia los quirófanos del Instituto.

Son las primeras en llegar, sobre las 8 de la mañana, y las últimas en irse, cuando ya han terminado las operaciones del día y pueden dejar todo limpio y preparado para la jornada siguiente.

Su trabajo abarca toda la estancia del paciente, incluida la hospitalización en los casos que se requiera. All are happy when they leave the centre. “Patients are very grateful with us and that makes our work more agreeable”, she says happily.

Ultimately, this tem of clinical assistants works every day to make the patient feel at home.

They do so with an everlasting smile. And that has always been the best medicine.

¿De qué conoce el instituto?

Soy de Oviedo. Estoy muy ligada al Instituto de manera muy cariñosa. Victoria Cueto-Felgueroso Botas, esposa del Profesor Luis Fernández-Vega, es muy amiga mía. Hemos crecido juntas, hemos vivido en la misma calle Cervantes y hemos ido al mismo colegio. Además, mi familia y yo somos pacientes del Instituto Oftalmológico Fernández-Vega.

El primero en atendernos fue D. Luis Fernández-Vega Diego, padre del Profesor, que es una eminencia y hay que agradecerle que sea tan bueno. Los Fernández-Vega son los mejores oftalmólogos del planeta.

Figurinista asturiana, ha diseñado el vestuario de películas de Woody Allen, Pedro Almodóvar y Alejandro Amenábar, entre otros muchos directores. Cuenta con diez nominaciones a los Goya.

Logró este Premio al mejor vestuario por la película “La niña de tus ojos” de Fernando Trueba.

Con 17 años me matriculé en el Conservatorio de Arte Dramático porque en aquél tiempo no había escuelas de diseño de vestuario.

Entonces tampoco tenía claro exactamente a lo que me quería dedicar. No sabía si me gustaba el diseño, la dirección, la escenografía o la interpretación. Quería dedicarme a algo relacionado con este mundo y por ello decidí estudiar en la única escuela que me proporcionaba esta posibilidad. Una vez allí, entré en contacto con el director del Teatro Español, Miguel Narros Barrios, y su escenógrafo y colaborador artístico, Andrea D'Odorico. Se convirtieron en mis maestros y durante diez años me enseñaron

How do you know the institute?

I am from Oviedo. I am closely linked to the Institute in a very affectionate way. Mrs Victoria Cueto-Felgueroso Botas, married to Profesror Luis Fernández-Vega, is a close friend of mine. We grew up together; we lived in the same street – Cervantes - and attended the same school. Furthermore, my family and I are patients of the Instituto Oftalmológico Fernández-Vega. The first to see us was Dr Luis Fernández-Vega Diego, the Professor’s father, an eminence

and one to whom we must thank for being so good. The Fernández-Vega’s are the best ophthalmologists in the world.

You studied drama and started your career as an actress in the theatre…

At age 17 I enrolled in the Conservatorio de Arte Dramático because at that time there were no schools for costume designers.

I was not sure what I wanted to do. I was not sure if I liked design, directing, set design or acting. I wanted to study something related with this world and I thus enrolled in the only school that gave me this opportunity.

Once there, I got in touch with the director of the Teatro Español, Miguel Narros Barrios, and his set designer and artistic collaborator, Andrea D'Odorico. They became my mentors and for over 10 years they showed me everything related to the work involved with being on stage. I was very lucky because in the classes

I took I was able to play the main characters of great classics like Shakespeare, Molière, Lope, Lorca and Calderón. Despite this, I did not want to be an actress. I was sure that I wanted to be behind the scenes and design the costumes for the different characters. That’s how my professional career started, doing a little bit of everything. That knowledge has been very useful; it has helped me to understand what happens on stage, to understand actors and their characters.

How did you make the leap to designing film costumes?

The leap to designing film costumes came about when my mentors - Miguel Narros and Andrea D’Odorico - received a request to make the costumes for the TV series “El Quijote de Miguel de Cervantes”, directed by Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón. I helped with the costumes and it was then that I was in touch with the cinema for a year. I fell in love with the camera and the cinematographic system and I decided to dedicate my career to design film costumes.

What are the differences between designing costumes for the theatre and for the cinema?

The theatre is a constant scene that has a physical distance to the eye of the spectator. Strokes are wider, more eloquent and must be watched from a distance. Likewise, actors need to raise their voice to project it all around the theatre. However, the cinema works with close-ups and detail.

For example, the camera discovers the buckle of a shoe, focuses on a silk tight and tells in minute detail the costume of a character.

Are there any common characteristics to fashion design and film design?

I admire great designers, especially Yves Saint Laurent, but fashion design is completely different from film costumes. They design costumes that are sold, “characters without a face”, and a film designer creates costumes for a given character. It is true that in contemporaneous films we follow the current trends because the character follows them, but this is the only thing they have in common.

What film genre do you prefer to clothe?

I have worked in very different genres. I loved comedy. I love designing period clothes from the 20’s to the 40’s, like in Woody Allen’s films: “Magic in the Moonlight” and “Midnight in Paris”. Costumes were astonishingly beautiful in this period. I also like the costumes of contemporaneous films like in the ones I work with Almodovar. Actually, I like all styles, as long as the script is good and the characters I have to dress inspire me.

Is there any genre left for you to work in?

I do not like filmed musicals.

However, I would love to design for the opera and I also like dance. In fact, I have worked for many years for the Ballet Nacional de España, but I do not like when these genres are filmed.

When you see a film for pleasure, do you find it hard to follow the story and not to analyse the costumes?

I love watching cinema films. I can see the films, analyse the costumes and follow the story

One always hears “how elegant!” Can you make a person elegant through their clothes?

There is a physical structure that helps external elegance and that must be accompanied by good manners. For example, when I dressed Nicole Kidman in “Los Otros”, I found it really easy to dress her elegantly due to her physical characteristics, as she is very tall and thin. I designed those clothes for her and they would not work for another person; often one same dress does not tell the same story for two different people. Costumes need to be adapted according to the physique of a given actor. When we film, we are glued to the casting director because it is crucial for us to know the actors to be able to define the costumes for the character and what we want to transmit.

What is the creative process and the costume design production process in a film?

I am going to tell you a personal story. Since I was really young, 14 or 15 years old, once I started reading more adult literature, I started drawing the characters of the books I read and dressed them with fabrics. When you read a script you imagine the characters and what they are wearing.

In the designer’s mind this creative side is very developed. As well as this intuition and imagination, there is a documentation and research work done at the same time to be able to illustrate

and convey appropriately what the script is saying and to be able to dress the characters. To this end, we need to search for the fabric so that it lies within the colour palette and period of the film. We must draw the character; we may do it 75 times until we reach what we were looking for. Furthermore, the designer hires the staff that works in the department and manages the technical budget. If one is designing a film with 5000 period costumes that need to be ready in three months, work is very laborious. To have it in time, costume production must be divided in six workshops specialised in this type of costumes, which can be found across six different European countries. We must send the fabric and accessories, which come from different cities in the world, to those workshops. To make sure that all the material is ready on time, one needs a large team constituted by a broad range of staff in the department. So, one of the responsibilities of the designer is to manage the budget for the department and the team.

How do you find the costumes and the accessories? Do you design everything from scratch and then produce it exclusively or do you look to rent or see what collectors have?

I love using original costumes but there is always a mix of everything. I search in antiquary shops, where one finds part of the wardrobe. Some of it you design and produce from scratch, but some other you rent. This is because films do not have enough budget to produce a new war-

Soy una gran espectadora de cine. Consigo ver la película, analizar el vestuario y seguir el guión, simultáneamente. Solo me molesta o me cuesta meterme en el guión si el vestuario es malo, porque me genera rechazo.

Siempre se dice “qué elegante es esta persona” ¿puede hacer elegante a una persona a través de su vestuario?

Hay una estructura física que ayuda mucho a la elegancia externa y que por supuesto tiene que estar acompañada de la educación.

Por ejemplo, cuando vestí a Nicole Kidman en “Los Otros”, me resultó muy fácil vestirle elegante por sus características físicas, pues es muy alta y delgada. Ese vestuario lo diseñé para ella y no valdría para otra persona, porque muchas veces el mismo traje no cuenta lo mismo para una persona que para otra. Hay que adaptar el vestuario al físico del actor en concreto. Cuando hacemos la película, estamos pegados al director de casting porque es importantísimo saber cómo son los actores para definir el vestuario

This type of costume cannot be hand-embroidered in five weeks and it would be really expensive, so I searched for it in antiquary shops. I found a robe from 1926 and hired a team to restore it.

You are the costume designer for Allen, Almodóvar and Amenábar, with whom do you get along best to propose costumes for his film?

I get along really well with all three of them, although they are very different. What I like about directors is that they are talented and do not always make the same type of film; this is very enriching. Almodóvar is very passionate about the wardrobe. He follows closely the creative process of the film. Allen respects one’s process and waits until the trial on camera and Amenábar has a very mental process. They are all different and I feel very comfortable with all three of them. I also work with other directors, like James Grey, with whom I’ve just filmed “The Lost City of Z”. It is an adventure film set in the Amazonas. I really enjoyed filming it.

Overall, I am very lucky with the directors I work with because they are greatly talented.

With which director would you like to work?

I would love to design the costumes for Roman Polanski’s films.

I really look forward to working with him. I believe he is an amazing director.

del personaje y lo que queremos transmitir. ¿Cuál es el proceso creativo y de producción de diseño de vestuario en una película?

Le voy a contar una anécdota personal. Desde bien pequeña, con 14 o 15 años, cuando empecé a leer literatura más adulta, comencé a dibujar los personajes de las novelas que me leía y los vestía con telas. Cuando lees el guión, te imaginas cómo son los personajes y cómo van vestidos.

En la mente del diseñador, esta parte creativa está muy desarrollada. Además de esta parte intuitiva y de imaginación, existe un trabajo de documentación e investigación al mismo tiempo para poder ilustrar y transmitir bien lo que narra el guión y poder vestir a los personajes. Para ello, hay que realizar una labor de búsqueda de los tejidos para que entren dentro de la paleta de color y periodo de la película. Tienes que crear el dibujo del personaje, que puedes repetirlo 75 veces hasta que consigues lo que quieres. Pero además, el diseñador contrata al personal que trabaja en el departamento y también gestiona el presupuesto técnico. Si diseñas por ejemplo una película de 5.000 trajes de época, que tienes que producir en tres meses, el trabajo es muy laborioso. Para tenerlo a tiempo, tienes que dividir la producción del vestuario en seis talleres especialistas en ese tipo de trajes, que pueden estar repartidos en seis países europeos diferentes. También, tienes que hacer llegar a esos talleres las telas y complementos que proceden de varias ciudades del mundo. Para lograr que todo el material esté

en fecha, necesitas un equipo amplio de mucha gente trabajando en el departamento.

Es decir, dentro de las funciones del diseñador también está la de gestión de presupuesto del departamento y de equipo. ¿Cómo localiza el vestuario y complementos? ¿Lo diseña todo nuevo y se produce en exclusividad o busca vestuario alquilado o de coleccionistas?

Me gusta mucho usar las piezas de trajes originales pero siempre hay un mix de todo. Hay una parte de búsqueda en anticuarios, donde encuentras parte del vestuario. Hay una parte que diseñas y produces nueva, pero otra parte del vestuario también alquilas.

Esto se debe a que las películas no tienen suficiente presupuesto para elaborar vestuario nuevo para todos los personajes. El vestuario de creación se destina a los protagonistas y se suele alquilar para los extras y figuración.

Me encantaría diseñar el vestuario de las películas de Roman Polanski. Tengo muchas ganas de trabajar con él. Me parece que es un director espectacular.

Su referencia es el cine español pero ya saltó a Hollywood vistiendo a Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin o Steve Martin ¿qué diferencias hay entre las películas españolas y las de Hollywood?

Es otro tipo de industria. Todos los departamentos están divididos como en sindicatos. Está muy profesionalizado. El cine de estudio americano tiene alto presupuesto y es muy comercial. Me gusta hacer cine independiente en los EEUU. Se produce muy bien y lo que más me gusta de ellos es que reciben al extranje-

ro con muchísimo respeto. Valoran mucho el trabajo artístico y muestran mucha ilusión porque trabajes con ellos. El cine español cada vez es mejor porque cada vez existen mejores productores. ¿Qué proyectos tiene?

Me voy ahora a Argentina y a Chile a diseñar el vestuario de la película del director Santiago Mitre, titulada “La Cordillera” y que protagoniza Ricardo Darín y Dolores Fonzi. Es un largometraje que va a hablar del poder. Mitre es un director que tiene varios premios de la crítica en Cannes.

También tengo otros proyectos para rodar en España.

Has conseguido el premio Goya por “La niña de tus ojos” ¿la veremos con un Oscar por mejor diseño de vestuario aho-

ra que ya ha dado el salto a Hollywood?

Sí, he conseguido el Goya y también he obtenido diez nominaciones a estos premios. Recientemente me han dado la Medalla de Oro de Bellas Artes, de la que me siento muy orgullosa porque es muy importante para este país. También soy académica de Hollywood y me han premiado en varios países. En cuanto a los Oscar, yo creo que hemos estado muy cerca de la nominación con “Magic in the Moonlight” y “Midnight in Paris”, de Woody Allen, pero tener un Oscar no es algo que me haga perder el sentido. Sí me lo haría trabajar con Polanski o que me volviera a llamar Woody Allen para hacer otra película.

Tengo 38 años y soy miope de 20 Dioptrías; he empezado a ver distorsionado hace un tiempo con uno de los ojos. Me han dicho que tengo una MNVS (membrana neovascular) en mácula y me pusieron una inyección en el ojo, ¿puede repetir el proceso?: Lo que usted tuvo fue probablemente una MNVS (membrana neovascular) por su miopía, que son vasos anómalos que han crecido en su mácula y le distorsionan su visión. El tratamiento efectivamente, una vez diagnosticado, es la inyección de una sustancia en el ojo (Anti-VEGF), concretamente en el vítreo, para que esos vasos se cierren. En el miope la respuesta suele ser buena, pero a veces el proceso puede repetir y puede necesitar tratamiento de nuevo. Debe de vigilarse periódicamente.

Trabajo muchas horas con ordenador y al final de la tarde noto la necesidad de parpadear mucho y sensación de incomodidad y mal enfoque visual.

Tengo 40 años, cuando no estoy con el ordenador no tengo molestias, ¿qué puedo hacer?: Es probable que sus problemas se asocien al síndrome de pantalla de visualización, cuadro frecuente cuando se está muchas horas con ordenadores. En esta circunstancia disminuimos la frecuencia de parpadeo y el ojo se puede secar más, se evapora más lágrima. Es importante tener en cuenta la posición del ordenador frente a nuestros ojos debe de estar aproximadamente a 30º por debajo de nuestros ojos y así la evaporación de lágrima es menor que si la

pantalla está alta. Además la distancia al monitor debe de ser de 50-70 cm. Es importante parpadear frecuentemente y realizar pausas, a veces se necesita utilizar lágrimas si con esas medidas no se mejora.

Me han dicho que tengo una distrofia corneal de Fuchs. Tengo 50 años y me comentan que en el futuro puedo necesitar un trasplante de córnea y que puedo tener más problemas cuando me tenga que operar de cataratas, ¿qué puedo hacer?, ¿es correcto lo que me han dicho?: Sí, es así. La enfermedad que usted tiene afecta al endotelio de la córnea: sus células no funcionan bien, por lo que retiene líquido, haciendo que la visión no sea buena, lo que hace un edema corneal”.

Cuando hay que hacer cirugía de catarata, hay que proteger la córnea con viscoelásticos durante la intervención, pero a pesar de eso la córnea puede empeorar y precisar un trasplante. Hoy, cuando detectamos que el paciente tiene dificultades visuales indicamos trasplante corneal endotelial (Dmek), y lo que hacemos es solo trasplantar el endotelio dañado dejando al paciente el resto de su córnea; para poder hacer esto tiene que ser en casos adecuados que el cirujano lo vea lo suficientemente bien, si no fuese así, precisaría trasplante completo corneal. El riesgo de complicaciones disminuye mucho con la primera técnica. Es fundamental que se revise periódicamente y si la situación empeora, ser valorado por el cirujano de córnea.

What you had was probably a NVM (neovascular membrane due to your myopia, these are anomalous vessels that have grown in your macula and distort your vision. Indeed, treatment once diagnosed involves the injection of a substance in the eye (Anti-VEGF), in the vitreous to be more precise, so that these vessels close. The myopic eye usually responds well, but sometimes the process may recur and treatment is required again. It should be regularly monitored.

Truth can be a dangerous virtue for an actor The last time Adrien Brody and I crossed paths was on Facebook. From all the videos that bounce off everyday, promising emotion without a story, I was struck by one of them.

In it, a tall and thin individual, dressed with a white shirt and black vest, with an insolent fringe and gloomy eyes, but with a strong gesture and a clear voice, explained to a group of students, tired of being so, how

the world we have created is a constant source of frustration.

The reason being that we are incapable of accepting others and ourselves as we are, we prefer a false version of reality. I did not watch the video till the end because it is not serious for an actor, a forger of usually unattainable myths, to be the one to advice on the dangers of the thoughtless intake of images in our society. In fact, I focused more on the intensity with which Brody was projecting the message than on the message itself.

As those who devote themselves to this profession (acting) say, there is truth in each of Brody’s words and gestures, a quality that is often taken for talent, and the latter with technique… The fact is that one can be an actor (or actress) without truth, even make a career out of it and receive awards. But, as this quality cannot be bought, not even with perseverance, many artists die without having had it.

El dibujo de la Navidad Un concurso de pintura infantil celebra 130 años de servicio a la Oftalmología El diseño de Ana Fernández de Prada, de doce años, fue el elegido por el jurado para la próxima postal navideña del Instituto Veintiséis pequeños artistas, todos ellos hijos de personal del IOFV, han participado en un concurso de dibujo muy especial: Decidir el autor de la postal de Navidad 2016, coincidiendo con la conmemoración este año de los 130 años de historia del Instituto Oftalmológico, que fundó el Dr. Adolfo Fernández-Vega.
