Welcome to Fernie, Bc BY KRISTA TURCASSO
VIEW FROM HEIKO’S TRAIL | VINCE MO PHOTO
This beautiful valley is located in the unceded territory of the Ktunaxa people and we are grateful to live, work, play and visit this remarkable corner of British Columbia. Welcome, you made it! And we’re so happy to see you. It’s been quite the year with many ups and downs and we’re as grateful as anyone for the longer, warmer days of summer and the endless opportunities this time of year in Fernie, BC provides. Writing this, it’s hard to know what the state of affairs will be during the heart of summer… but we know together we’ll continue to keep one another safe and healthy by following provincial and federal recommendations. What has truly surfaced from this pandemic is that inherently, people have genuine concern for the well-being of others. The generosity and support of those around us is what has kept us all going, especially the small and unique businesses Fernie is so fortunate to have. They add colour and
vibrancy to our community, through the unique products and services they offer but also through the support they reciprocate to one another and to the residents and visitors of the Elk Valley. Fernie is also home to countless organizations that have worked tirelessly to shift and adapt with the many changes we have been faced with to ensure this community has park spaces, trails, activities, events, and amenities available for residents and visitors. Many of these organizations rely on passionate and dedicated volunteers, which is one of the reasons Fernie is such a special place to live and visit! The people here truly appreciate this space and its history and do what they can to protect and enhance it.
There is much for you to discover while here, and this guide is created with this in mind. We also hope it encourages you to try something new, visit a place you never knew existed, or uncover a unique story or piece of history adding to your experience in Fernie. For additional resources and recommendations, visit ferniefix.com. You will also find an events calendar here, which is updated regularly. Enjoy your stay, and remember if you can’t fit it all in, there is always next time… and the time after that as we aren’t exaggerating… the opportunities are endless. WELCOME continued on next page

MAIDEN LAKE | MATT KUHN PHOTO
A Message From the Mayor
Ktunaxa in the Elk Valley
Right now, the message is to stay local, hike local and bike local, and I couldn’t think of a place I’d rather be than here in Fernie. These mountains are our playground, and COVID-19 hasn’t dampened our enthusiasm to keep doing the activities that we all love.
For over 10,000 years the Ktunaxa lived on lands along the western slopes of the Rocky Mountains; this includes the area now recognized as Ȼaqahak (Fernie). The Elk Valley remained relatively untouched until non-native exploration began in the 1840s.
This is the summer to support our SUBMITTED PHOTO local economy, plan stay-cations and celebrate everything that makes Fernie such a wonderful place to visit. Hiking at Island Lake Lodge, exploring new trails at Fernie Alpine Resort, trying your hand at fly fishing by taking a lesson from one of our local guides, there is so much to do. You could book a spa day, enjoy outdoor dining, take in a local art show or enjoying our new al fresco style take-out dining area in Station Square. Our summer season is full of outdoor vibrancy, and I cannot wait to see everyone around town enjoying all of their favourite activities. Be kind, be safe and have a terrific summer. Mayor Ange Qualizza
Ktunaxa presence in the Elk Valley has long been centred on a village named qakawakanmiǂuqnik, or Michel Prairie, a Ktunaxa settlement at the confluence of Michel Creek and the Elk River near present day Sparwood. This settlement was occupied annually and likely for a long period of time by the Michel Prairie people, also referred to as the Fernie Band, or qakawakanmiǂuqnik, a group with close ties to the Ktunaxa community of Tobacco Plains, and whose annual round included hunting bison on the eastern slopes of the Naⱡmuq̓ȼi known as the Rocky Mountains. The Elk Valley is within Qukin ʔamakʔis (Land of the Raven) and known for its coal. The Ktunaxa would carry the coal with them to start their fires as they travelled to the different encampments as they followed the seasons in their homeland. To read the Ktunaxa creation story, visit ktunaxa.org/who-we-are/creation-story/ Janice Alpine, Business Development Officer with the Kootenay Aboriginal Business Development Agency
Our mission is to create the most extraordinary happy places. We recognize and value our local Fernie businesses and the people who work in them. They help make Fernie what it is. This summer get out and support your favourite local retailer, coffee shop, restaurant, pub, and small business. Let’s ensure they thrive and continue to contribute to Fernie’s vibrant culture. From the Team @ LWE Builders, we stand for the creation of happy places and for the businesses that make Fernie the ultimate happy place.

SUMMER 2021 › Recreation
RECREATION If this year taught us anything, it is the value of outdoor spaces and fresh air. Both residents and visitors have enjoyed the abundance of recreational opportunities this valley provides year-round, and especially in summer. A phenomenal trail network, world-renowned river, lakes galore… it’s something we have learned to appreciate even more! We hope you do, too.

Q. In my opinion, the Elk Valley stands apart because…
Not all the Town Fathers and City Administrators were chain smokers in the late 1970’s, but it often seemed that way during the lengthy recreation planning meetings. If any of them were alive today, they may not be surprised at today’s vibrant levels of physical activity in the Elk Valley. After all, the enthusiastic participation of the Valley folk was the goal, and we have them to thank for their astute planning.
A. The whole Valley is buzzing with active people, primarily due to the passion for outdoor activity that the people who live here have. Locals show up and support every event that comes up, and pre-COVID there were events galore. This is unique - it isn’t like this elsewhere. Q. My favourite way to start a Fernie day is…
I was hired in 1978 to help guide the development of recreation infrastructure and programming for the District of Sparwood, and worked for them until I retired 10 years ago to mountain bike, hike, paddle and ski full time in the Elk Valley. I’ll never leave. My degree was in Physical Education, and I had spent several years teaching in Manitoba before heading West. The fields of Recreation and Physical Education were considered synonymous back then; after all a basketball is a basketball right? In 1969, when I graduated High School, career counsellors held that the field of ‘Leisure’ was about to boom. In a few short years every household would own a computer, and just imagine the time those machines would save everyone! Employees would work maybe three days a week and everyone would be looking for things to do. Recreation and Leisure Services was the field to pursue for employability and growth. I jumped in. The Elk Valley now has recreation facilities that were never dreamed of forty years ago: indoor pools, fitness centres, trail systems,
SUBMITTED PHOTO
parks, etc. Most impressive, however, is the rate of use and the numbers of active people. Most notable is the increase in the activity levels of women. Does anyone remember the Participation movement of the 1970’s? They would be proud of the people in the Elk Valley today. Local mountain biking, hiking and river sports popularity have increased dramatically. We should now anticipate overuse issues and be planning ways to mitigate them to maintain the important resources we have. For example, some biking trails are now heavily used and getting busier. The Elk River is a huge resource and is well utilized by paddlers, fishers, and tubers. We have to look to providing services like bathrooms and parking areas to support it. The same is true
A. Most days I start with a stretching program while listening to Classical music (these days Chopin and Schumann) and the Economist daily podcast, followed with an ice cold shower and a giant breakfast. For people like me, who want to stay involved in high intensity sports into their advanced years, this part of the day is essential. Q. The best way to end a Fernie day is... A. I would like to say that the best way to end the day is to climb a mountain and watch the sunset, but to be honest I generally kick back in the evenings. Q. The one summer secret I’m willing to share is... A. I have two: 1. The mountain biking in Sparwood. My favourite is the Lunch Loop, Meander, Pete’s Trail combination. 2. The stretch of the Elk River from Line Creek to Sparwood. It’s scenic, active and lightly used. Excellent for experienced paddle boarders. FERNIEFIX.COM | 13

Have Yourself a FAR Out Summer BY KAREN PEPPER
EMMA POLIT PHOTO
Living in Fernie during a pandemic has been something I’m incredibly grateful for. The town, and surrounding area, is blessed with wide-open spaces and numerous outdoor recreational opportunities that are right in our backyard. With the emphasis on outdoor spaces over the past year, many of us have explored places that were new to us or gained a heightened appreciation for those trails and parks where we have been regulars. Fernie Alpine Resort is one of those places you’re likely very familiar with in the winter, but perhaps not as much in the summer. With a scenic summer chairlift, 27 downhill bike trails, 10 multi-purpose trails, 10 hiking trails and an uphill e-bike/enduro route (to access downhill trails), the resort offers more outdoor spaces for you to discover all summer long. If you haven’t visited the resort in the summer, here are a few fun ideas to get you going.
BIKE
Mr. Berms to Duff Dynasty (Novice/ Intermediate Flow Trail) From the top of the Elk Chair, head to the right, and follow the signs to Mr. Berms - a great warm-up trail to get the blood flowing and the suspension moving. Mr. Berms cruises down the Elk ski run in a series of berms and rollers. Keep an eye out for the Duff Dynasty exit (on your left) and connect into this gentle, smooth trail full of twists, turns, rolls, and bridges through a cedar forest. This is a great trail combination for families and kids of all ages.
HIKE/RUN
Old Growth Magical Forest (Boom Trail/ Gorbie Loop - Old Growth Magical Forest – View Trail/ Hobbits Trail) Starting from the top of the chairlift and ending at the resort base area, this hike is longer (approx. 7 km) but relatively easy with a continuous gentle descent. From the top of the Elk Chair, begin your hike on the Boom Trail - a wide multi-use road traveling through the old-growth cedar forest and offering exceptional views up the Elk Valley. ecological features that can be found along this trail. At ‘Confusion Corner’ (a multi-choice trail intersection), take a left to connect to the Gorbie Loop, where you will descend through the Cedar Bowl drainage. At the bottom of the Gorbie Loop, you reach the highlight of the hike – the Old Growth Magical Forest! This spectacular secluded trail meanders through a magical pocket of old-growth forest to a notable stand of ancient cedar trees – the perfect spot for some photo ops. Once you have taken in these majestic beauties, hook up to the View Trail / Hobbits Trail - a beautiful and shady mountain road that provides return access to the resort’s base. Be sure to make noise and carry bear spray on this hike as moose and bear frequent the area. Note that a number of these trails are multi-use trails, so expect two-way traffic as well as some mountain bikers. Any combination of these trails would make for a great trail run as well (up and/or down!).

If you’re game for a little uphill walk, the Lizard Observation Deck is a short hike up into the Lizard Bowl via the Summer Road. This deck has stunning views of the valley in one direction, and the Lizard Headwall in the other direction. Another great spot for photo opportunities.

THE BEST DEALS ON GEAR
WWW.GEARHUB.CA
Look up from any Fernie patio on a summer evening and you may see some colourful action in the skies above you. Paragliding has been a part of mountain sports in Fernie for more than four decades, and the area is home to an active and rapidly growing flying community. The modern paraglider is a remarkable piece of engineering: the world’s only aircraft that fits in a backpack. Made of lightweight nylon, the paraglider resembles the shape of a skydiving parachute but is designed for efficient gliding and sustained flight, with a comfortable sit harness and precise steering through toggles for each hand. The whole kit weighs no more than 15kg and costs less than a high-end mountain bike. Pilots take off from mountaintops or hillsides, wherever a suitable breeze can be found. Gradual slopes are best. The pilot runs to build speed and smoothly takes flight – no cliff jumping required. Paragliders fly at around 40 km/h and a skilled pilot can stay aloft for hours on end.
SUMMER 2021 › Recreation
Paragliding BY TOBY STEER
Paragliding is a flow sport with natural comparisons to whitewater and surfing. Just as standing waves form wherever the river flows over a boulder, the west wind that flows up and over Morrissey Ridge creates a wave of air, keeping gliders aloft as they surf back and forth. Adventurous “cross-country” pilots will venture beyond the ridge to hunt for thermal updrafts, rowdy columns of hot rising air that can carry you to heights over 12,000 feet. After topping out a thermal, the pilot will set off on glide in search of the next one – hopping from thermal to thermal, crossing mountain ranges and flying great distances, landing only when the heat of the sun disappears. With a good forecast, determination and a bit of luck, pilots starting in Fernie have flown as far as Fort Steele, Elkford, the US border, and the Continental Divide. Paragliding is equal parts mountain sport and civil aviation, and flying a paraglider in Canada requires a “P2” pilot’s licence. Learning to fly a paraglider is more accessible and affordable than any other form of aviation, with training offered by flight schools throughout BC. As a student pilot, you’ll learn to fly solo from the very first flight, with instructors carefully watching and guiding you by radio. After a day or two of ground school and practice at a small training hill, you’ll soon be setting up for your first high-mountain flight.
The sight of your feet leaving the ground for the first time is unforgettable! A dedicated student can usually complete their license in ten full days of training – weather permitting. Booking an intensive course at a full-time flight school is well worth it; pursuing training on weekends is possible but can take a full season or more when the limitations of weather are factored in. With numerous launch sites, a long flying season, and challenging and rewarding terrain, Fernie is becoming a major paragliding hotspot for local and visiting pilots alike. If you’re a fan of airtime in other sports but can never seem to get enough, paragliding may be in your future too. Toby Steer is a paraglider pilot and tandem flight instructor in Fernie. Walking Amongst Big Trees STORY AND PHOTOS BY TERRY NELSON
Very often a hiking outing has a destination to lure you from the comforts of your normal surroundings. Whether it is a river, lake, mountain ridge, or just a tranquil meadow, these attractions make us get out and explore. The hikes suggested in this article have the reward of walking amongst the big trees in the local forests.
An easily accessible trail is the Old Growth Trail located in Cedar Valley, on the Island Lake lands. The drive up Mount Fernie Park Road from Highway #3 in itself has vantage points of the surrounding mountains as the road climbs up through the Lizard Creek drainage. While the trail is rated as moderate, explorers can chose the length of their outing as it is an out and back. Arriving at the Old Growth trailhead, a parking area 4km up the gravel road is the beginning of your natural decompression. Immediately upon entering the forest, you will feel the air cool, the moisture level rise, and your spirit soar. You are now in the Inland Temperate Rainforest of British Columbia. This 4km, roughly one and a half hour hike winds up towards Island Lake Lodge, where 800 year old Western Red Cedar, Interior Douglas Fir, and Englemann Spruce are your companions. Gauge your party’s comfort level, as you can turn around at anytime you’ve attained your hiking goals. The Sherwoody Forest Trail that originates in Mount Fernie Provincial Park, is another one of my favourite places to roam on a hot summer day. The cool, shady forest, with its diverse plant life is a great place for an easy family hike. This trail can be accessed from either the Lizard Creek pedestrian bridge below the campsite, or from the Gorby Bridge located past the campsite at the next parking area on the left. Either point of access leads into the Sherwoody Trails. The network can get a bit confusing, but is well signed, so just don’t follow the “back to campground” signs until you are ready to return. The open forest is comprised of primarily Big Trees continued on next page

spruce, cedar, fir, and balsam trees, but the reward is finding your way up Happy Gilmar Trail, where some of the largest Western White Pine trees in the area are located. These rare trees have been subject to “blister rust,” so many dead snags are found amongst this stand. When you start to see the big, elongated pine cones on the ground, you have arrived. The trail loops back around onto Woody if you stay left when descending, you will then begin to see the signs directing back to the campground. The trail is an approximate 3.5km loop, but leave lots of time in case you get a bit disorientated within this maze of trails. Olivia Creek Trail in the Hartley Pass provides access into the area behind the Three Sisters, and shelters some fine Englemann Spruce specimens along the approach. The area is quite remote, so the accessibility and rating could be considered difficult. Hartley Lake Rd. accessed from Dicken Road north of Fernie, is the beginning of the adventure. Users should expect a rough, gravel mountain road to the pass above Hartley Lake. The second left turn after the pass is Olivia Creek Sawmill Rd., where this road leads up towards the alpine bowls of Trinity Mountain. Those concerned for their vehicle’s paint job should park off the road, at the pass. The old puddle filled road travels 2.2 km where upon reaching the sawdust pile, the actual trail begins. The trail is lined by impressive Englemann Spruce and Balsam Fir, representing a mature succession forest with a regenerating understory of replacement trees preparing to become the next forest. This natural cycle is important for the well-being of this ecosystem. When the trail opens into a large meadow with an alpine basin view, this particular trail adventure
CEDAR, SNAKEBITE TRAIL
ends. The trail’s 2.8km distance is measured out and back from this meadow. The trail continues higher into the upper reaches, but parties should only consider extending their trip if properly prepared. Now, if you are really adventurous I recommend the drive 35km to Elkford on Highway #43, from the Highway #3 intersection east of Fernie to visit the giant Interior Douglas Fir trees. This special grove of trees is located on the east bank of the Elk River, just north of Elkford. Crossing the Elk River onto the Fording River Road, you take the first left, and follow the gravel forestry road upstream until you see the 103km marker. Take the left turn approximately 350m further, where a fairly new logging block access goes down towards the river. There is a place to park, with no real trail yet, but
SPRUCE, OLIVIA CREEK
a few steps into the forest towards the river, and the old Elk River Trail becomes obvious. There is a bit of blowdown windfall on this remote trail, but don’t be discouraged. Follow upstream for 650m where the colossus trees grace the slope above the river. A trail just past the “big trees” slopes down to the river, and makes a nice spot for a picnic before returning back the way you came. Hopefully these summer hiking recommendations allow you to discover some of the special features that the Elk Valley has to offer. Happy Trails. What Makes Fishing in Fernie Special BY TYLER CARSON
LEAH MILNE PHOTO
When asked what makes fishing in Fernie special, why so many people come from all over the world to fish here, it catches me off guard as I have not really thought about it for awhile. I headed down to the Elk River, near my home, looking for inspiration and after an afternoon on the river, I came up with these things. The Fernie area rivers primarily support native fish. I have been fortunate enough to fish a few other places. All these places have great fishing and great experiences, but the fish have been introduced, replacing the native fish. When fishing locally, it is for native Westslope cutthroat trout, Bull trout, or Rocky Mountain whitefish. We humans like to believe we can improve on Mother Nature, but I believe we are often mistaken in this. All of these fish have a special place in the habitat. They also have a special place for fishermen. Bull trout are aggressive and can grow to a metre long. They make for exciting streamer fishing and the ability to target Bull trout is not to be taken for granted as in some locations near us, targeting this species is against the law. Westslope cutthroat trout are a close relative of the rainbow trout. They are not known for their athletics but are likely one of the most willing dry fly eating fish around. It took me a while to learn, but with patience, good technique and appropriate water temperatures, dry flies will work at some point almost every day through summer, fall and even parts of the winter. Then, of course, there is the much-maligned whitefish. We don’t give them enough credit. I have seen a
huge smile on the face of a new or younger angler who has landed a whitefish, that’s a big win. I have also noticed that the Bull trout love to hang out near schools of whitefish. While I am a bit suspicious of their intentions, it seems to work out well for the Bull trout population. One of the other special things about fishing in Fernie is space and proximity. The pressure on the area has been increasing as people discover the joys of fly fishing, but I often find myself fishing alone or with one other angler in sight. There is still a lot of space when compared to other fisheries where you might stand shoulder to shoulder with other anglers or surrounded by drift boats. I am also grateful that I can have a great day of fishing with a short walk or bike ride from my home. I love the startled look on faces of folks from out of town when they ask, “Where should I fish?” and I tell them, “walk along river trail anywhere in town and give it a try, it will probably be good.” The reply is often “really?” with a facial expression that indicates my immediate loss of credibility. Most anglers expect to drive for hours or hike into some obscure spot at the crack of dawn. While this adventuring has its own merits, this
conversation reminds me that what we have here is the exception, not the rule. The last thing that makes the Fernie area a special place to fish is the people. The area’s lakes and rivers have many cheerleaders. Groups like the Elk River Alliance work on habitat restoration. Local experienced anglers like John Poirier share years of knowledge with the next generation of fishers. The people I work with at the Elk River Guiding Co. treat every day like it’s “the Great Canadian shoreline clean up.” All these people make and keep our rivers and lakes a world-class place for fishermen and women. These are just a few of the many examples of the people and experiences that make fishing in the Fernie area great. I recommend you go out and experience all these things and if you see me on the river don’t be afraid to say hello and remind me of the ones I missed. When not working as a fly fishing guide for Elk River Guiding Co. Tyler Carson works as an Avalanche Forecaster and College Instructor who dreams of playing Banjo in an Old Time Dance Band. Lift Integrated Health, RMT. I became interested in Massage Therapy because it offered an opportunity to work with people in a positive environment. It gave me the ability to be a part of helping improve someone’s physical and mental well-being, which has been a great career goal! My mom was a physiotherapist so healthcare and rehabilitation were always around us growing up. Being in this environment made me conscious of human physiology and how to listen to its needs. I find all aspects of rehabilitation and manual therapy interesting, and there is always room to grow which makes my practice constantly evolve. Having the ability to change and alter my approach helps to find what works best for each patient. There is continual growth and research of the effectiveness of massage therapy for tissue health and improving movement to coping with pain and stress. The collaboration of health practitioners and physicians for pre and post rehabilitation has increased and ensures the best results for all patients. I hope to see continued focus on overall health, and treating the cause, not just the symptoms. The benefits of strength and conditioning is a large part of the home-care model, and I hope to see continued support for this. We have a growing culture of collaboration between many modalities of therapists in Fernie. Patients are able to receive the best care when a group can access and share information in a team-based approach. The growth of programs that are offered in Fernie is also growing, from one-to-one therapy

to group activities, which all assists in motivating people in finding what works best for them to stay active and healthy. Each patient presents a puzzle to solve and it’s important to look at the body as a whole, see how they move, feel for muscle tone differences, assess tension or weakness, and then explain it in a way that better helps people understand what they need. Summer Safety Tips BY TAINA TURCASSO, ND, RM
V. CROOME PHOTO
As we head towards another beautiful summer in our part of the world, we are venturing outside more with our families and friends to take advantage of the mountain biking, fishing, camping, or even to just go for a walk in the woods. Unfortunately, that also means thinking about sun exposure, mosquitos, ticks, and bee stings. It can be overwhelming trying to be prepared so here are some ways to keep your family safe during these warmer months.
Sun Safety
The warm sun is so welcome after a long winter, but it can be dangerous for little ones with their delicate skin. The key is to avoid the sun when it’s at its peak (10-2), utilize protective clothing (including a sunhat), apply sunscreen to any exposed skin (reapply after sweating/swimming), and keep everyone hydrated. You should limit/avoid using sunscreen on babies 0-6 months so it’s best to keep them covered and in the shade, and have some shade available for everyone. Some safe sunscreen options include physical sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium oxide.
Mosquitoes/Ticks
Mosquitos and ticks act as disease vectors for West Nile virus, Lyme disease and malaria. Though the risk of illness or serious health effects may be low, you still want to protect your family from these little critters. Most bug sprays on the market work for biting insects like mosquitos and ticks. The most common ingredient is DEET, which is a neurotoxin. Due to the potential harm in using
DEET, particularly in kids, you should not use sprays with more than 30% DEET. Picardinbased sprays have fewer toxicity concerns but have not been as thoroughly studied in humans. It is the most popular form of bug spray used for kids in Australia and Europe. Natural bug sprays like eucalyptus and soybean may work as well as DEET but others with citronella, clove, lemongrass, and cedar may work well against mosquitos but less so against ticks. When applying, spray into your hands and then onto your child’s skin, avoiding eyes, mouth, and hands. Only apply to outside of clothes and exposed skin. Consider using a natural spray on their skin but then DEET or Picardin on their clothes. Keep their skin covered, use mosquito nets over strollers or baby carriers when in heavily infested areas, and avoid bright colours or flowery printed clothes. Check daily for ticks around the hair/scalp, ears, armpits, belly button, waist, groin/legs, and on the backs of the knees. If you find a tick, remove it as soon as possible with clean, fine-tipped tweezers, straight up to keep it intact, and clean the area and your hands with soap and water or 70% isopropyl alcohol. If you find an enlarged lymph node on you or your child, especially in the head and neck area, immediately search for ticks.
Bee stings
Bee stings can be so scary, especially when we don’t know whether someone will be allergic or not. To avoid stings, keep shoes on outside, cover food/drink when eating outside, and stay away from garbage cans. Avoid brightly coloured clothing, using scented products, and of course disturbing obvious hives or nests. If your child gets a bee sting, try to remove the stinger, wash the area with soap and water, keep them comfortable with a cool compress and pain relief as needed. Watch for signs of anaphylaxis including widespread hives, redness or swelling, swollen lip/tongue or difficulty swallowing, coughing/wheezing/ difficulty breathing, vomiting or diarrhea, and changes in colour/dizziness/fainting. Call 911 if you see any of these signs and speak to your doctor about when and how to administer benadryl and/or epinephrine with a suspected or known allergy. This may be a lot to consider but being prepared in advance will reduce stress and help you to prevent most of these situations before they occur. Have a great summer! SUMMER 2021 › Arts and Culture
ARTS AND CULTURE We’ve been publishing for 15 years this fall and what we have come to learn is that not only does Fernie have a rich and vibrant arts and cultural past, the present is making great strides! It is truly remarkable the number of artists who choose this place to create and live and continually add depth to what’s on offer. While it’s been a challenging time in regards to live events, many have continued to rise to the occasion and continue to be a pillars of this community. We can only imagine the out-pouring of opportunities next year will bring. Until then, opportunities such as virtual events or self-guided tours are here for you!

Art and culture have been a part of my life since my earliest childhood memories. Then it was all about beauty, as I learned to draw, paint, play music and write. As I entered my teens, I realized that art and culture are about who we are. We have to understand it and participate in it to know ourselves. When I was a youth, there were so many artists in the community. I think of Tom Foran, Joe Gigliotti, Tippy and Mary Menduk, The Watsons, Len Christie, The Lynch Family, Mr. Camilli and countless others who made art, whether visual, performance such as community theatre, dance or music. There were the school bands and choirs. Many children, willingly or not, took piano or accordion lessons. There were talent shows and school performances. The arts were locally created and sustained; the character of the artistry was local and perhaps of uneven quality - but always made with enthusiasm. The arrival of the Arts Station sometime in my mid-twenties gave all this artistic energy a community hub. There will be those who remember all kinds of programming that began because of the facility, including all manner of crafts and summer theatre. Today Fernie is a fantastic place for artists to be. The level of sophistication and quality has matured. There are many artists creating work that resonates far beyond Fernie yet reflects our local place and culture. It is an even better time to be an audience in Fernie, and our audiences are well-travelled, cosmopolitan, and cultivated.
here. The Ktunaxa and their unique culture and isolate language were the first and longest human expression of this place. Then came people from all over the world with their languages and cultures, each with their way of living, working, playing, and adapting to the dramatic landscape and climate. I believe that if we respect and honour our past and carefully cultivate our future, the valley will remain a magnificent place unto itself for generations to come. Q. My favourite way to start a Fernie day is…
Our history and heritage are inextricably intertwined with our art and culture. Ȼaqahak, the Ktunaxa name for our part of the Elk Valley, had a history that would but for the memories of the Ktunaxa have been lost. My concern arose from the recognition that as the town changed, its populations moved or passed away, buildings and places, and occasions and rituals, would be lost just as had been happening to Ktunaxa heritage. The Fernie Heritage Strategy was born out of these concerns. When seeking community engagement, it started with the Ktunaxa and then reached out to all the community to investigate our history and heritage. The Fernie Heritage Strategy is a model that has excited interest from other communities and heritage organizations. As the Pandemic becomes a part of our history, Fernie Heritage is looking forward to attention returning to the strategy so that we may ensure the future of Fernie- Ȼaqahak’s rich built and abstract heritage and our sense of place. Q. In my opinion, the Elk Valley stands apart because… A. The Rocky Mountains shape the people
A. To arise early on a summer morning while the town is still sleeping, and the sun is just touching the peaks of the Lizard Range and walk around our garden. I never tire of looking at the flowers and how the plants, shrubs and trees are growing against the backdrop of the mountains. All of that beauty is accompanied by a chorus of birds. It is pure joy! Q. The best way to end a Fernie day is... A. Sitting on the terrace overlooking the garden with my husband and a group of family and friends, dinner finished, a glass of wine and the sun setting behind the Lizard Range, the white and silver flowers lighting the shadows and the garden redolent of scent for the evening pollinators. Q. The one summer secret I’m willing to share is... A. Fernie is a great place to grow a garden. If you have a garden share it, find a friend with a garden, or visit one of the parks or public gardens like the Court House, City Hall, or the Heritage Library and have a picnic. Make or order a special picnic basket and dress up a bit. I promise it will be an occasion you treasure! FERNIEFIX.COM || 43 43 FERNIEFIX.COM

Summer Reading Guide BY JESSICA BOZOKY
The birds are singing and there’s more sunlight than night skies. I don’t know about you, but I’ve been craving summer and am welcoming the warmer days with open arms. To feel the grass between my toes, to lay in the sun with a book and sporadically dip in the river to cool down, to smell the flowers and sip fancy drinks from patios along 2nd Ave. Brighter skies and brighter smiles, summer is my season! This summer Fernie Heritage Library is excited to announce we’ll be installing a new tent in our garden, to create a more accessible outdoor space for the summer to fall. We hope to use this outdoor space to host lively programs in an outdoor setting, but it will also be a space for the public to use when spending time in our garden. Whether you’re reading the newspaper or a new release, browsing the internet on one of our laptops or simply sitting in the beautiful surroundings for your lunch break, our garden is a summer highlight. For our youngest patrons, we welcome you to Crack The Case in the BC Summer Reading Club with a specially curated, mystery-themed, all-Canadian booklist. Designed for school-aged children between the ages of 5 and 14, the BC Summer Reading Club is a great opportunity to keep children reading during the school break. Whether you’re heading off on an adventure by the water or a picnic in the park, pack your books for some relaxing downtime and self-care. We will also be hosting an array of virtual weekly programs with craft and activity packs available for curbside pickup. Keep an eye on our social media for upcoming events. The Fernie Book Bike, our bright green bike, will be on the streets of Fernie once again this summer, delivering books, magazines, and more to our community. If you’re looking for entertainment over the warmer months, here are some book series and/or authors we suggest adding to your Summer Reading List:

SUMMER 2021 › Shopping
SHOPPING Fernie’s shopping opportunities always take people by surprise. The variety and quality are of course of note, from fashion to hard and soft gear to the best in locally made chocolate and coffee and specialty refreshments. But the added benefit of strolling outdoors, and choosing to enjoy a patio between perusing is such a bonus. And the views! We’ve lived here forever, and it never gets old.

that allow us to give back to the community is so rewarding. Q. In my opinion, the Elk Valley stands apart because…
Interior Envy
The opportunity to enter the Fernie business community came to us, when the previous owner suggested we should come onboard. My mom had worked retail in Fernie for over 20 years, so it made it an easy decision to have something we could work on together in the community serving the great people she had built relationships with for years. For me it was an easy transition to do it together, and I was looking for a change and a flexible schedule to spend time outdoors with my growing family. I love being a part of the community doing a job I love, whilst being able to be creative. It is rewarding seeing customers return, excited to see the new collections season to season. We take pride in helping our customer build collections for their home that are timeless and create a beautiful space for them to enjoy. I have seen many new businesses in town over the last 10 years and so many are women owned. I feel Fernie opens its arms and supports local business. You really don’t need to look too far to find the things you need as we have a diverse selection of business in Fernie. I would hope to see small business continue to grow and flourish as time goes on, and to see more new businesses join our great community. We love being involved in the business community. I think it’s so satisfying when you love what you do and it reflects in your store. We get a lot of people who love to come in
A. Growing up in the Elk Valley I have seen many changes, good and bad over the years, but one thing that has always remained the same has been the community spirit. The people of the Elk Valley stand together and continually show support for one another. Having travelled, I appreciate that not every community has this dynamic and how very lucky we all are to live in such a beautiful place; not to mention we have the best variety of outdoor sports right at our door step!

just to visit and we welcome a chat anytime. We appreciate each and every one of our customers and the unique stories and styles they share with us. After starting on this venture, we have both grown and learned so much from other entrepreneurs in Fernie. Everyone is so supportive and welcoming and there are so many opportunities to work together to make the business sector grow. We enjoy the challenge of constant change through the seasons, and knowing that we fill a niche in Fernie that people continue to support. Curating new collections to share and show our diverse selection of inventory where everyone is able to find something they enjoy gives us a sense of pride in what we do and adding collections such as heartprint threads
Q. My favourite way to start a Fernie day is… A. In true Fernie spirit I start my day with a good cup of coffee; sitting at a local café or enjoying the view of the hill from my kitchen table, appreciating the start of a new day in the town I call home. Q. The best way to end a Fernie day is... A. On a patio in the sun, enjoying the fresh mountain air and good eats with friends… the sounds of summer brings me so much joy in this little mountain town! Or a quick trip out to the lake for a late day swim and BBQ! Q. The one summer secret I’m willing to share is... A. There’s magic in these mountains... just look around you!

Fernie’s Galleries A Cultural Shopping Feast BY TARA HIGGINS
H SQUARED GALLERY TARA HIGGINS PHOTO
Walking along 2nd Avenue today you would be surprised to learn that 20 years ago the arts scene in Fernie was less than vibrant. Today, a stroll through our historic downtown is a cultural shopping feast. Diversity is the name of the game in the Fernie Arts Scene and within a three-block radius you can find an array of makers and artists. Painters, stain glass artists, blacksmiths, photographers, weavers, felters, potters, leatherworkers, jewellers, Fernie represents it all. This permanent collection of studios and galleries are great places to peruse, finding the perfect keepsake of your time in Fernie. Stop in in between bike rides or after a hike with a cup of coffee in hand from one of our local cafés. Looking to do a culture crawl of Fernie? Why not start at the Fernie Arts Station? Originally a train station it was moved to 1st Avenue 30 years ago. The building has been reinvented to house a theatre, that hosts concerts year round, a gallery with a new exhibit every month as well as studio space for visual artists, potters, spinners and weavers. There is always something happening in this cultural heart of Fernie’s Arts Scene.
Walk out into Station Square and in the summer months you will find Ace Ferguson Studio’s bus parked on 6th Street. Climb aboard Fernie’s first mobile retail shop that is filled with art by Kate Moran, beads and findings, jewellery repair and more.
A few steps along you will find the fun and whimsical work of Leanne Stothert at Studio 562 alongside paintings by Liza Gareau-Tosh, hand-tooled and carved wood works by Erik Fait and string instruments by luthier Kim Kennedy.
Turn left onto 2nd Avenue and on the corner is H Squared Gallery, the newest addition to the Fernie arts scene. H Squared showcases the artwork of local landscape painter Tara Higgins, as well as a dozen more Western Canadian artists and makers. From potters and glass blowers, to sculptures and woodworkers this eclectic curation is on a mission to bring bright, bold, beautiful works of art into your life and home.
Stay on 2nd Avenue to explore the photography of Brian Pollock, Stephanie’s Glass & Art Studio and don’t forget to pop into Green Petal who carry pieces by local potter Helena de Jong.
Two doors down pop into Polar Peek Books and look up high. The bookstore has been showcasing local Fernie artists for over 10 years. Right next door is the Fernie Arts Co-op, home to over 40 artists and makers, they have everything from artists cards to handmade soaps to original artwork and so much more.
Like every town worth its cultural salt, head down Fernie’s side streets to discover more artists and makers. The Eye of the Needle located on 5th Street opposite the Fernie Heritage Library is home to Sandra Barrett’s iron and felt work. Yes, you have read that correctly, the true meaning of having a soft and hard side! Inside you will also discover the work of local glass artist Katherine Russell alongside a host of other BC artisans, including candle makers, more fibre artists and forgers.

I look forward to watching Fernie’s art and culture scene grow. It’s been a wild ride up until now and it only seems to be gaining < To Island Lake Lodge momentum. Claude and Lillis Perreault and Fredrik Bergvist The Bridge Bistro
Who doesn’t remember the hopping Central Bar in the early 2000s? That is where it all started for us. We had spent a few years in Fernie, working and skiing. I was working with Claude and his business partner running the Hi3 Lodge for a couple of winters, which allowed us to travel and ski in both Canada and Sweden. In the fall of 2000, we jumped on the opportunity with Langley Travel, a Swedish Tour Operator to take over the Central Hotel, Restaurant and Bar. The venture at that time was seasonal during winters. During summers, we travelled to Sweden or Corsica and worked in other restaurants. In 2008 we had the opportunity to take over the Food and Beverage operations at the Fernie Golf Course, which presented yearround work in Fernie as we also took over the restaurant at The Griz Inn with the Corner Pocket Brasserie. As summer tourism began to grow, the ski hill restaurant became a hotspot for weddings. We probably hosted close to 40 weddings and other events at the two locations in 2010. The catering part of our business was extremely busy the following few years, running both locations simultaneously, as well as catering many larger Christmas functions… and while all of this was fantastic, and we really enjoyed running both locations, we were always on the hunt for our own place. In the spring of 2011, the opportunity came to us, when Rip and Richard came up for

sale and the Bridge Bistro was born. We ran all three restaurants for three years, with the help of some exceptional staff. Our Chef, Fredrik became a partner at our newest venture where we will celebrate 10 years in business this June. Fernie is an amazing place to work and play. But it hasn’t always been easy. Seasonal challenges, weather fluctuations, tourism, staffing… it has always kept us on our toes, especially the struggle to keep staff employed year-round. We are dedicated to supporting our staff first, to keep them employed for as much of the year as possible, and in the last eight years, the off season has become almost nonexistent. Fernie is growing fast, with so many people moving to the area permanently. We appreciate the support we receive from the people that live and work in Fernie year round, and from all the visitors that keep checking in on us and are looking forward to serving you for many more years to come.
Q. In my opinion, the Elk Valley stands apart because… A. Fredrik: of the people and the pace, the long days and the opportunities for hanging with friends with common values and interests. Q. My favourite way to start a Fernie day is… A. Claude: make myself a Chai Tea, read the news, and then go play a good game at the tennis court. Q. The best way to end a Fernie day is... A. Lillis: a night ride! Or just sit out on my patio at home and watch the sun go down behind Mt. Fernie. Sunsets and sunrises are the most beautiful in Fernie. Q. The one summer secret I’m willing to share is... A. Fredrik: Sunday afternoon/early evening golf at the Fernie Golf Course, no doubt the best time! Lillis: I love summer thunder storms! SUMMER 2021 › Where to Stay
WHERE TO STAY You want to visit Fernie, but where should you stay? Whether it’s camping… staying in a yurt… choosing a tiny home… deciding a hotel is easiest for you… or perhaps it’s an Air BnB that works best for your family. The options are all here, and this town is so walk and bike-able that any choice you make will be perfect. Enjoy!
Jeremiah Pauw Fernie Fox Hotel
My wife Marina and I moved from Melfort, Saskatchewan in 2007 with two small kids in tow and pregnant with our third. We decided on Fernie as our home due to its reputation for being a great small mountain town with great skiing. Fernie as a community has surpassed our expectations and welcomed us with open arms. We could not have picked a better place to raise our family. Fernie is now our home and we plan on staying. When we arrived in Fernie, we purchased the Super 8 motel and started our adventure in as hoteliers. It has been an adventure that’s for sure. Lots of crazy stories let me tell ya… With the steady growth of visitors to Fernie over the past 10 years, tourism is now the biggest contributor to our local economy, 100 million per year. This has kept us busy to say the least, but it has also given us the opportunity to grow our business. With the purchase of the Evergreen apartments and the re-branding of the Super 8 to The Fernie Fox Hotel. The re-branding is super exciting, and a dream come true. I believe it is not only great for our business but also for Fernie as a whole. In my opinion it will improve our visitor experience by making Fernie more visibly authentic with less franchises and more local business. Being independent and not having to abide by a franchise agreement will also give us freedom to invest more locally and to make business decisions that are beneficial both to our great community and to our business.

SUMMER 2021 › Real Estate and Development
REAL ESTATE AND DEVELOPMENT Like many places in the world, real estate has become a hot market in Fernie. Fortunately, there are also development opportunities on the horizon and a lot of work is being done by the City of Fernie and the Fernie Family Housing Society to ensure affordable opportunities exist in our community. There is also an abundance of professionals in this field, from real estate agents to builders to trades, here to help you every step of the way!
Martin and Marlene Vale The Cedars
I’ve been asked many times over the years about how I became involved in the housing and community development business and looking back it makes perfect sense. My father was an architect and I grew up in a household where blueprints and drawings spread over the dining table were the start of family discussions about design, livability, how buildings should both stand on their own yet fit their surroundings and create communities. Places where people want to be, to live and play while bringing those people together in a way that reflects the community’s values. When I first saw the natural surroundings of what would become The Cedars, I knew that this was an unbelievable and unique opportunity to do exactly that. The incredible views and sun, almost unlimited trail network and unspoiled Provincial Park next door seemed the perfect location to create a neighbourhood reflecting the outdoor nature of everything that is Fernie. I love a neighbourhood where you don’t need a car to be lost in nature within two minutes, where kids play road hockey, people can walk their dogs or cross-country ski, all in a quiet, safe location within minutes of Fernie’s historic downtown. A place built with my own family in mind. It’s a great feeling to see all the families that now call The Cedars home feel the way our family does. Sometimes it feels a world away from the crisis facing the world today and now, more than ever, the benefit and charm of small-town living has captured the

attention of many families looking to prioritize their health and safety. This past year we have seen an influx of families building in The Cedars who are taking advantage of the opportunity to work remotely while still having many of the same amenities that you would find in a city. As one of the most desirable places to live in BC, Fernie offers what the world needs more of today… community, safety, nature and recreation and we are excited to continue growing The Cedars by offering more lots this year and in the future. Please visit thecedars.ca for details.

Q. In my opinion, the Elk Valley stands apart because…
Q. The one summer secret I’m willing to share is...
A. Whether it’s biking, fishing, boating or hiking, Fernie has it all at my doorstep.
A. Marlene: Lizard Creek has some of the best summer fun, I love a BC facial with the clay in the creek.
A. Have a cappuccino with my wife Marlene in our living room and gaze at the everchanging backdrop of mountains and sky. It is a very peaceful and reflective time. Q. The best way to end a Fernie day is... A. In the summer, pretty much every day, I go for an evening ride, run or walk with my dog Indy. On the hottest days, Marlene and I go to Lizard Creek for a swim.

SUMMER 2021 › Real Estate And Development
A Guide to Building in Fernie BY PATRICK SORFLEET V. CROOME PHOTO
Undertaking a reno or new construction can be a stressful process. Doing your research and pre-planning can help make the process smoother and ensure that your efforts are focused on a project you would be allowed to undertake. The City of Fernie regulates and issues development permits, building permits, wood burning appliance permits, and plumbing permits. Electrical and Gas permits are handled by Technical Safety BC (technicalsafetybc.ca/permits). Here are a few questions to consider as you begin the process. 1. What zone is your property in? (fernie.ca/zoning) 2. Is what you want to and where you want to do it permitted in that zone (section 4 ) or in the general zoning regulations (section 3)? a. Typical issues we see are uses that aren’t permitted of buildings/additions located in setbacks. b. Uses 3. Is your property within any development permit area identified in the Official Community Plan (section 9-C)? (fernie.ca/ ocp) a. If so you will need a development permit before you can apply for a building permit. b. Look to the requirements for the development permit area your property is within and design your project to conform with them.
c. Some types of development are exempted from needing a development permit (section 9-C.i) 4. Does your property title have any restrictions, covenants or rights of way that would be affected by your project? (ltsa.ca) a. Title encumbrances such as private architectural controls, covenants, and statutory rights of way can all impact what you want to do. 5. Where is your property line? a. Many people assume that the sidewalk or edge of curb is their property line, this is rarely the case. Finding your pins is ideal but can be tricky. The City cannot locate property boundaries for you. If you have question about zoning or development permits please contact the Planning Department at 250-423-6817 or fernieplanning@fernie.ca. With your preliminary research complete and having received a development permit where required, you are ready to apply for a building permit. Detailed requirements for all building permits are included in the Building Bylaw; however, here is a more general list of what is required in most cases:
1. Completed Building Permit Application 2. Certificate of Title 3. Site Plan or Survey a. If you are within the floodplain this must include accurate existing and design grades. b. Identify any new driveway access 4. Two complete sets of detailed plans drawn to scale that demonstrate compliance with BC Building Code. a. Include details on the floor and roof systems, beam locations, and point loads. Most permits allow you six months to start work so applying early will help you keep on schedule. Processing times vary based on the complexity of a project and how many permits are ahead of yours in the queue. Additional information can be found on the City’s website by clicking apply for a building permit under the “I want to…” tab. If you have any questions about building or plumbing permits please contact the Building Officials at 250-423-6817 or fernieplanning@ fernie.ca. Patrick Sorfleet is a Registered Professional Planner, previously working with the City of Fernie as a Manager of Planning. Recently, he took a position with the City of Sparwood as the new Director of Planning and Development. FERNIEFIX.COM | 67

The Elk Valley is home to people - whether visitors or residents, with passion! They give back and organize and set up and tear down and plan and educate and are there for each and every one of us. We want to say thank you and hope you do as well, as you are out experiencing our community.
Jesse Ross
Fernie Chamber of Commerce I am currently the Visitor Information Manager at the Info Centre here in Fernie. I’m proud to say that I’ve worked in hospitality and tourism my entire life. It all started 12 years ago when I went to Humber College in Toronto and received my diploma of Tourism Management in Industry Services. To be honest, the only reason I chose this college was because I had never travelled and I had the opportunity to finish my last semester in France. SOLD! I immediately caught what people call the ‘travel bug.’ From there, I went to start my hospitality career with the Fairmont Royal York in Toronto, The Fairmont Banff Springs and then the Fairmont Chateau Whistler. I absolutely loved helping excited travellers plan their trip, provide local knowledge and getting to know people from all over the world. After being inspired by so many travelling stories from guests, I decided it was my turn for new experiences. I booked a one way ticket to South America where I travelled for nine months and ended up guiding hikes in the Andes Mountains of Ecuador. I then jumped over to Serbia for a few years where I worked for an online destination wedding company. Finally, my sister called me and said I better be coming to her wedding in Fernie, and once I got here, I never left! Working in tourism has obviously changed since the pandemic, but even prior, I noticed more and more tourism jobs were moving online. When I worked for the online destination wedding company, for example, I quickly realized it wasn’t for me as I missed chatting with colleagues and FERNIEFIX.COM | 70

creating connections with guests, and I think travellers prefer in-person as well. My hopes for the future of tourism (after the pandemic) is that we embrace and not take for granted those face to face interactions, connections and relationships we make, because in my opinion it’s the most exciting part of travelling and working in tourism. Q. In my opinion, the Elk Valley stands apart because… A. The Elk Valley has a great sense community and has this untouched and undiscovered charm. Oh, and the scenery ain’t so bad.
Q. My favourite way to start a Fernie day is… A. Getting my cruiser and biking along the river! Q. The best way to end a Fernie day is... A. Patio margaritas at Nevados! Q. The one summer secret I’m willing to share is... A. The cheesecake sundae at the 3&93…

SUMMER 2021 › Navigation
NAVIGATION Navigation is important, both when en-route to your destination and while enjoying your time once there. One of the most attractive features of this mountain town is how close everything is and how quickly you can connect to a city pathway, many following along the Elk River, to get to your destination. Getting to the downtown from most locations takes less than 20 minutes by foot, and often times it’s quicker to bike to a trailhead than to drive. Additionally, there are options to get around in the valley from BC Transit to taxis to Health Connections. Grab a map, we promise it won’t take long to figure out what works best for you! Located in South-eastern British Columbia, Fernie is situated near major hubs allowing quick and efficient access from anywhere in the world. It’s a three-hour drive from Calgary, Alberta, five-hour drive from Spokane, Washington, two-hour drive from Kalispell, Montana and a one-hour drive from Cranbrook, British Columbia, all home to international airports. Shuttles, buses, car rentals and transit make travel to and from these locations easy.

ELK RIVER MAP 8 tips to play safe on the Elk River
1. Know where you are going and be aware of hazards i.e. rapids, sweepers and logjams. Stay to the inside on sharp corners to avoid colliding with woody debris. If you do collide with debris, climb on top to avoid getting trapped under water. 2. Always wear a PFD/lifejacket and shoes for walking on rocks and pushing off obstacles. 3. If you end up in the water, swim defensively on your back with feet downstream avoiding obstacles like rocks, trees and logjams where you can easily get pinned. 4. Be prepared for cold water and changes in weather conditions. There is a high risk of hypothermia if part or all of your body is in the Elk River for a length of time. 5. Lose the booze and keep a clear head. You might need it to help a friend or avoid a bad situation. Celebrate your float or paddle on a warm sunny beach or deck afterward. 6. The Elk River can change channels, form rapids and build or remove log jams at any time. Local knowledge is your best bet for up-to-date, accurate information. 7. Take a swift water rescue course. These courses are designed to help you recognize potential hazards on the river and learn how to handle them if it can’t be avoided. 8. Use the buddy system; paddling by yourself is dangerous.
