Summer wins gold yearly in the popular Fernie Fix – Best of Fernie survey. “What is your favourite Fernie season?” we ask hundreds of visitors and residents and annually the answer is a resounding “summer!” This may come as a surprise, seeing as Fernie has been predominantly known as a ski town that receives a ridiculous amount of champagne powder and an influx of seasonal visitors throughout the winter months. “Summer?” you may be asking. “What can possibly compete with faceshots and freshies?” First of all, the days are longer. Starting in early spring, it is not uncommon to awake bright and early to enjoy a walk by the river with the dogs, a trail run with friends, or a cup of coffee and breakfast on a patio… with the current edition of the Fix, of course. Returning home with ample time to get to work, or to dive into other responsibilities for the day, you feel rejuvenated and that time is on your side. By late afternoon, planning is
already underway for the evening’s activities, whether it is a round of golf, a mountain bike ride with friends, game of tennis, playing in one of the City parks with the family, or dinner and drinks on a deck. Time is somehow in abundance and with extended daylight and warmer temperatures, we feel as though we can fit it all in with energy to spare.
Additionally, and especially after the last couple of years doing our best through a pandemic, the warm, dry weather encourages people to not only get outside, but to get together. We had a stretch of very warm and sunny weather this spring and even though the mountains were still covered with snow and spring-skiing was WELCOME continued on next page FERNIEFIX.COM | SUMMER GUIDE 2022 | 9

in full force, everyone was out, the energy was electric, and people gathered at Fernie Alpine Resort to hear live music, to celebrate our community and its resilience, and to dance. Did it ever feel good to dance! It truly showcased the need we have for these community events and spaces, and how this time of year brings us out and encourages sharing time with friends and family. As the summer months approach, this is highlighted through popular outdoor events such as the Wednesday Socials, Mountain Markets, weekly bike races at FAR, run club with Stag Leap, and of course Wapiti – yes, Fernie’s mountain music festival is back and celebrating its 10th anniversary! In our corner of BC, we experience all four seasons which is another reason this time of year is so appreciated. A beautiful fall is swiftly followed by a snowy winter and a rainy spring. By the time summer shows its true colours, we are more ready than ever, sometimes feeling as though it could not
have come soon enough. We dive into this season and all it has to offer uninhibitedly, not wasting a moment and finding it hard to plan even a weekend away. The busy events schedule that accompanies summer in Fernie makes it even harder. Soon enough, summer will make its way into your heart as your favourite Fernie season. Or maybe an alternative season will continue to hold the top spot. Regardless, after you spend some time here during this beautiful time of year you will truly appreciate it and at the very least understand why it is repeatedly a fan favourite. Welcome to Fernie! We created this guide with you in mind and hope it helps you during your time in Fernie. For additional information visit ferniefix.com, where you will find the 2021 results of the Best of Fernie Survey alongside additional resources, articles and recommendations.

A Message From the Mayor After two summers of cancelled in person events and festivals, I am certainly looking forward to our festival and events season coming back! Fernie is a true celebration of arts, live music and mountain culture. We are thrilled to welcome back tourism and travellers from near and far to enjoy all of our favourite things. You can design your own adventure by biking our world famous trails, float the river or hire a local fishing guide to showcase the Elk River.
What makes Fernie truly unique is our local entrepreneurs, whether a restaurant or a gallery, our business community is a real window into the creative energy that makes Fernie such a welcoming community. I hope you enjoy everything Fernie has to offer, and I absolutely hope to see you around town. Be kind, be patient and be safe. Have a terrific summer. Mayor Ange Qualizza
Sukiⱡq̓ukni kinwakiⱡ Kukin ʔamakʔis! Ktunaxa have called the Elk Valley home for tens of thousands of years. The Ktunaxa used the area for living, hunting, and fishing, as a path to access buffalo and to get our coal to make our fire as we travelled throughout our homelands. Kukin ʔamakʔis, which is Land of the Raven. The Ktunaxa people have been in this area since Naⱡmuqȼin fulfilled his prophecy and placed the Ktunaxa people in this area to be the keepers of the land. At that time there was some disturbance caused by a huge water monster known as Yawuʔnik̓, who killed many of the animals. It was decided that
Yawuʔnik̓ had to be destroyed. A war party was formed. Yawuʔnik̓ plied the Kootenay (wu·u ʔaqsⱡmaknik ʔakinmituk) and Columbia (Miȼ̓qaqas) River System. When Yawuʔnik̓ was killed, and butchered and distributed among the animals, Yawuʔnik̓’s ribs were scattered throughout the region that now form the Hoodoos seen throughout the region. When the prophecy was fulfilled, the spirit animals ascended above and are now the guiding spirits of the Ktunaxa. In all the excitement Naⱡmuqȼin rose to his feet and stood upright hitting his head on the ceiling
of the sky. He knocked himself dead. His feet went northward and is today known as Ya·kⱡiki, in the Yellowhead Pass vicinity. Naⱡmuqȼin’s head is near Yellowstone Park in the State of Montana. His body forms the Rocky Mountains. Read more at ktunaxa.org/who-we-are/ creation-story/. As you look around you, the forest is very dense and referred to as Ȼaqahak (Fernie). As you travel, throughout Ktunaxa homelands take special note of the unique landscape. Janice Alpine, Ktunaxa Nation Council FERNIEFIX.COM | SUMMER GUIDE 2022 | 13

Local's Perspective Todd Penke
FERNIE TRAILS ALLIANCE My family moved to Fernie in the Fall of 2020 for the recreational opportunities in the area, the feel of the community, and proximity to family just over the border in the Crowsnest Pass. We loved our home in Seattle, but it was time to leave the grind and get closer to family and the spaces we love. The birth of our second child early in 2020 made it even more clear. I was fortunate to be in Fernie as the Fernie Trails Alliance (FTA) sought to fill a new Executive Director position. I think my experience supporting philanthropies and non-profits during the day, serving on the board of a conservation org, and general passion for the outdoors helped get me in the seat. That and perhaps a set of fresh eyes. Regardless, I couldn’t be more excited for this role. The town’s network of trails and outdoor opportunities are supported by a tireless group of organizations, volunteers, local businesses, and landowners that make Fernie so special to each of us. I hope that I can help to keep the good work going, lessening the burden on volunteers and enabling more people to enjoy time outside. One of the things I love so much about Fernie is how ubiquitous use of the trails feels for the people here. On any day out on the trail, I think I see a mix of genders and ages, from toddlers on their parent’s mac-rides, to silver-haired ladies pausing briefly at the top of Swine Flu before charging down. I think that is the awesome thing about conservation and outdoor recreation, now. Yes, there’s a challenge in the incredible growth in outdoor user-ship over the past two-years, but it’s also an opportunity. How do we build trail networks and communities to reduce the barriers for new users, while still maintaining an incredible experience for those long in the tooth? It's amazing seeing the relatively recent rise of organizations like She Jumps, Outdoor Afro, Brown Folks Fishing, etc. helping share the outdoors to previously underrepresented communities. The more communities and people care about the outdoors, the more voices we'll have to protect it.
RECREATION Fernie still has a great feel and is taking the right steps to stay ahead of these trends. The new funding announced for sustainable tourism is a great example of this. The program, managed by Tourism Fernie and in partnership with a plethora of local orgs, is taking steps to maintain or improve the experience of classic Elk Valley treks and haunts, and preventing them from being loved to death. Q. We live in the Elk Valley because… A. Where else can you do so much? From trails like Swine Flu, to floating the Elk for native westslope cutthroats, this town is paradise. Q. Summer in Fernie is so special because… A. The bike, and the daylight. I love seeing people of all ages out and about riding around. I also love that the 10pm sunsets enable parents like myself to tuck their kids into bed and still get out for a ride. Q. Something we make sure to do each summer in the valley (at least once!) is...
Not surprisingly, the value of recreation has become even more pronounced these last couple of years. Alongside the freedom and enjoyment it provides, the physical and mental health benefits have helped many to navigate challenging times. This summer, there is an excitement in the air. We are all ready to get out, explore and connect – both with nature and one another. There is a respect and an appreciation for the opportunities these spaces, trails, waterways and mountains provide. And a gratitude for the many individuals and organizations dedicated to creating, maintaining and enhancing recreation in the Elk Valley.
A. Dinner at Island Lake Lodge. We had a meal last summer with friends that featured a rare bison ribeye, melt-in-your mouth halibut, and a cow moose that sauntered by our balcony table. Q. One Fernie secret we are willing to share is... A. Not sure how secret it is, but have you tried Graffito pizza?

Trail Running
This sport has picked up momentum the last few years, in large part due to the duo behind Stag Leap Running Co., Mike and Abi Moore. Stag Leap hosts weekly run clubs and popular annual events, such as the Elk Valley Ultra and the Lone Wolf and has created a community of passionate trail runners!
Fairy Creek Trail Difficulty: Green Elevation: 169M
Distance: 5km
New to trail running? This is the perfect first trail to tackle! An out and back from the Visitor Centre on Hwy 3, this is a beautiful trail that parallels Fairy Creek and takes you to the base of a waterfall. Please note – this is a busy trail in summer, for less traffic consider an earlier or later run!
Gorby Loop
Difficulty: Blue Distance: 7km Elevation: 247M For the intermediate, start out at the Gorby Parking lot, found on Island Lake Road just beyond the Mount Fernie Provincial Park. Cross Lizard Creek over the bridge and take a left shortly after on Gorby and climb all the way to Red Tree Road. Take a left on Red Tree and continue below the T-bar up to the top of Megahurts. Take a left down Megahurts and enjoy a canopied, old-school trail with roots and some bridges. Continue down Old Goat, all the way until you reach Gorby again. Take a right down Gorby, returning the way you came.
Baldy Loop
Difficulty: Black Elevation: 552
Distance: 8km
This is such a beautiful loop, with stunning views down the Lizard Range. Starting at Island Lake Lodge, take the Lake Trail to the right for half a km until you reach the sign for Mount Baldy. Turn right and continue up a steep double track road where you will get your shuffle on. Finally, you will reach a right turn onto some single track, crossing Mount Baldy and reaching the apex and viewpoint. Take a breath, and enjoy the scenery before a fast paced, switch-backing descent to the lodge. The best part? Après on the Bear Patio of course!

Skeleton Flats Trail
Hiking
There are endless hikes to discover, some from town and others a short drive with options at Fernie Alpine Resort and Island Lake. Here are some great ideas for this summer!
Difficulty: Blue Elevation: 283M
Distance: 4km
Lift access hiking at its best, this short loop gets you to amazing vistas quickly! From the top of the Elk Chair at Fernie Alpine Resort, walk up the Summer Road trail to the first view point. From there continue to climb, reaching the Skeleton Flats trail, enjoying the gorgeous valley and Fernie from afar. Connect back to the Summer Road and return to the Elk Chair for the fun ride back down to the base. Enjoy a patio refreshment at the Rusty Edge or Legends to finish off the day’s adventures!
Mount Fernie
Difficulty: Blue/Black Elevation: 900M
Distance: 8km
Mount Fernie is accessible from town (parking at the Annex Park) or you can start from the Canyon Trails subdivision. The trail begins climbing immediately, and eventually starts to switchback as you gain elevation. Just over half-way, you’ll find the Batman Bench looking towards the Three Sisters, a perfect spot for a snack or to turn around for a shorter hike. Continuing up, the trail breaks into the alpine with epic views of Fernie with some rocky navigation as you make your way to the ridge. Once there, you’ll find a couple of benches to rest up. You’ll notice the option to connect to Heiko’s Trail via Rocky Road (next time!). Return the way you came and enjoy some deserved après in town.
Goldilocks
Difficulty: Black Elevation: 826M
BORN TO ADVENTURE PHOTO 18 | SUMMER GUIDE 2022 | FERNIEFIX.COM
Distance: 9km
An iconic trail attached to an iconic trail! Goldilocks was built by three female trail builders and is a stunning extension to Spineback trail at Island Lake Lodge. Starting from the lodge, go right around the lake following signs for Fir Trail / Spineback. Once you reach Spineback, it climbs steeply and then switchback as you near the top. Enjoy this bench, but not for too long as the adventure continues! Follow the trail until you reach the Goldilocks loop, either direction works, but I enjoy going counter-clockwise. The trail is rocky and steep, with some loose shale sections. As you reach the ridge the views will take your breath away. Hopefully you booked dinner at the Tamarack Lodge as you’ll be worthy of a reward!
RECREATION
Mountain Biking
While I love trail running and hiking, biking is my absolute favourite. Thankfully in Fernie, there is an abundance of trails to explore for all levels and styles of riding. Here are a few different styles and levels to try out.
DANYAL TAYLOR PHOTO
Lazy Lizard
Style: Cross Country Distance: 8km
Difficulty: Green Elevation: 390
A more cross-country trail, which you can access from town, or park at the Hedonism parking lot at the far end of the Mount Fernie campground. The Lazy Lizard connector trail begins here, rolling gently alongside Island Lake Road. You will cross a few bridges (slippery when wet) and begin to climb, gently at first. Once you reach the powerline, the trail climbs a bit more steeply but with nice benches in between. When you reach the top, come back the way you came unless lunch is on your mind at Island Lake. Please note: this is a busy two-way trail. Use proper trail etiquette, make noise so other trail users hear you, and be kind and cautious.
Trail Dogs
Style: Flow Trail Distance: 2km
Difficulty: Blue Elevation: 131M
One of Fernie’s newest trails, Trail Dogs is located down Coal Creek Road. For those keen on a warm-up, bike the 5km along Coal
Creek Heritage to access Up Dog. Otherwise, parking is available at the bottom of Rifle Range Road. This trail can also be shuttled for multiple laps or to help those groms with wee legs. The climb is a quick and gentle 1km (finished late spring 2022) otherwise the road is a great option. Trail Dogs is a flowy, berm to jump style trail that is fun regardless of the air you catch… or don’t. Everyone will be smiling and looking for another lap after this one!
until you reach the Stupid Traverse. This takes you across to Slunt. Enjoy the view from Rob’s bench, who also loved this trail. And then hold on tight through the jumps and roots and small natural drops along the way down Slunt. You’ll reach a y – the natural flow is to continue down Brokeback Ridge. An alternative is to continue on Slunt to the powerline, take a left and head to the top of Eric’s Trip. This is another epic trail, which will bring you close to where you started.
S-Bomb (Slunt)
Remember, there are different levels and types of trail users out there. Be respectful, be informed of proper trail etiquette, and show your support by purchasing your Fernie Trails Pass. fernietrailsalliance.com/getinvolved/trails-pass.
Style: Technical Distance: 14km
Difficulty: Black Elevation: 592M
Guys, don’t think too hard about the trail names here. I promise, it is so, so worth it! This is a long and exciting descent. Start off by climbing Phat Bastard, which isn’t as bad as it sounds. Then continue up Mushroom Head. At the peak of Mushroom Head, begin up Lactic Ridge. Line choice plays a role here, as does that Eagle. Once at the top of Lactic you can either hike up Lactic or ride the Moc-Assassin. Once you hit the Moccasin, take a left and continue climbing

Creating Lifelong Passion for Riding Bikes BY JACOB JOHNSON
Getting kids to fall in love with riding bikes is easy. Let them be kids. Let them have fun! SUBMITTED PHOTO
Throughout my childhood I attended swimming lessons at Fernie’s old outdoor pool in Rotary Park. I recall bitterly cold mornings with mist hanging in the air over the pool, teeth chattering, goosebumps as tall as the mountains, I’d cringe as I forced myself into the water which felt as if it were only a few degrees above freezing. Our instructors would have us do laps or tread water until our lips turned blue. Having fun wasn’t in the cards. Over the years, being led through drills, gasping for air, while frozen to the core, I developed a cat like aversion to swimming that has lasted a lifetime. Whether it’s learning to swim or learning to mountain bike, providing a comfortable environment from the weather to our gear and the people around us, can go a long way toward having an enjoyable time. Nobody has fun getting eaten alive by mosquitoes or being caught in bad weather without the right clothing, nor if their chain is always falling off or if they can’t reach their brakes. When things aren’t lining up, consider a shorter adventure or save the adventures on bikes for another day when you can create a better environment for enjoyment. When everything falls into place there are a few things to keep in mind while letting the magic unfold. As a professional mountain bike instructor my priorities are safety, fun, and learning, in that order. This can be a great
guide for parents riding with kids as well, even when the kid’s abilities exceed our own.
Safety
Getting injured isn’t fun! But the thrill of riding fast and hitting more challenging obstacles is exhilarating. Regardless of age we can get carried away in the moment, taking on challenges beyond our abilities. While we can’t eliminate risk, we can manage it. We rely on the rule of three Rs: Relaxed, Right, and Repeatable, to help keep our enthusiasm in check. When performing a skill, are we Relaxed, are we doing it Right, and are we able to Repeat the feat, Relaxed and Right, several times consecutively? If the answer isn’t yes to all of these, consider dialing back the difficulty. Parents may want to take some lessons themselves, or watch a lesson, to get an idea of what to look for.
Fun
This is the easy one. Let kids be kids. Let them have fun! We’ll often let the kids lead a game of silly challenges without keeping score or turning it into a competition. The challenges don’t even need to always be related to riding a bike properly. Because being silly on our bike helps us develop physical dexterity and being silly is fun! Letting the kids set the challenges for themselves is a great way to see what interests them, what their abilities are, and how much appetite for challenge they have.
Learning
From learning to crawl to jumping mountain bikes, we’re naturally curious and love to test our limits. Having fun, being playful, and trying silly things on our bikes, are wonderful ways to learn. But like arithmetic or a language, sometimes it’s easier to learn from a teacher. We learn best when we’re interested, and we’re usually interested when something is fun. Instructors use a combination of skill and game-based teaching mixed with adventure making it easy and enjoyable to learn and practice techniques. When practicing we look for the three Rs to ensure we’re building good muscle memory that will serve us well in even the most stressful circumstances. But remember, we don’t need to learn, practice, or progress on every ride. Sometimes we’re just riding bikes for fun! Next time you take the family for a ride, pretend you’re a business and the kids are your customers. Keep them safe, focus on having fun, and maybe you’ll all learn something along the way. Create a little adventure that has them wanting to come back for more and falling in love with riding bikes. Jacob Johnson is passionate mountain biker and an instructor with Mystic Mountain Adventures, which offers mountain bike camps and skill trailing for all age groups and levels. mysticmountainadventures.com FERNIEFIX.COM | SUMMER GUIDE 2022 | 21

Cool Off This Summer: Swimming Holes Near Fernie BY DANYAL TAYLOR
MORRISSEY FALLS | DANYAL TAYLOR PHOTO
Swimming holes take me back to memories as a child. They were a place to relax, eat snacks and cool off over the hot summer days with your family and friends. Collating a list of swimming locations is a necessary part of surviving the hot days that are to come. So lucky for you, I’ve saved you the trouble of bush whacks by curating a list. Each location was tested against an advanced set of peer-reviewed parameters to ensure it met and exceeded the definition of a swimming hole. These parameters are listed below:
Accessibility: We aren’t climbing
mountains, hiking for long, or bush whacking. When it’s a hot day we want instant relief from the heat and some space to relax in the sun.
Dunk-ability: This is selfexplanatory – full body submersion. Not some small creek that’s shin deep! Proximity: Close to town. Who wants to drive over an hour and a half in the heat to a swim location? Not me!
Last summer we saw record temperatures throughout BC and knowing where to go for a swim was key to taking the edge off those muggy days. If this coming summer is as hot as the last, these locations should do the trick to quench your swimming needs.
Boat Launch
Silver Springs
This is one of the go-to places for a quick swim. There are numerous spots along the Elk River where you can go however the boat launch is one for an all round 5/5 for each category. Take a picnic blanket, some snacks and enjoy a few hours here. If you are looking for an adventurous day, grab a float and depart from the bridge by the Visitors Centre. You’ll float all the way to the boat launch which is an easy exit point.
Silver Springs is a series of three lakes naturally fed from a spring at the furthest lake. It boasts epic cliff jumping and some wicked views. The lake does require a 20 minute drive and 20 minute walk to get to. This is one of the closer lakes to Fernie and is an amazing spot to spend a full day. If you’re feeling up for it, you can hike in your float or paddleboard.

Morrissey Falls*

Drive towards Cranbrook and take a left over the bridge to Morrissey. You’ll want to continue and follow the Morrissey Forest Service Road. There is no official location on Google for this spot. Enter these coordinates and Google Maps will show you where to go: 49.4069734, -114.920333. The drive is bumpy, but this spot is incredible with an easy 5-minute walk, a waterfall, and a deep large swimming hole to swim in. We found this last year and it will be my go-to this summer. * The Morrissey Forest Service Road used to access Morrissey Falls is narrow and steep. Please use at own risk.
Matheson Falls*

These falls are another gem close to Fernie. To get here you drive up Coal Creek past km 42 and park before the bridge as the trail head is on the town side. From here walk up-stream for around 10 minutes over the wooden stairs and over the moss. The trail was recently worked on by the Trail Alliance, so it is in pretty good shape! * Coal Creek road was severely impacted in the November 2021 floods. Check Trail Forks for current conditions.

RECREATION
Tennis, Anyone? BY LUCY HARRUP
It is no surprise tennis dates back to the 12th Century and continues to be a popular sport. Running around a court chasing a yellow ball and trying to hit it back over the net is not only engaging, it’s good for you and is also sociable with no limits on age at either end.
What do you need to get started?
A racket. There is a huge price range, starting with inexpensive rackets ($30-50) is fine for the odd recreational game. But like other sports, as you improve you will want to upgrade. Luckily, you can get an incredible racket that will last a few years for $250-300. Balls. A three-pack is around $10 and should last a good while, depending on how much you play, how hard you hit the ball, and ok, yes, how many get lost over the fence! Tennis Shoes. Non-marking running shoes are ok. Again, if you play more, you will want tennis-specific shoes for support and durability, ranging from $90-$200. A Good Sense of Humour. It is not a super easy sport. The ball is small and the court can feel even smaller. But, it is super fun and the learning curve can be steep.
Tips for the beginner
1. Grip. Hold the racket at the bottom of the handle with the pad of your index finger of your dominant hand on the flat right side of the grip if you are right-handed, and left side for a lefty. 2. Set up. As the ball crosses the net, move towards the ball (or away slightly if it is coming at you) and make a unit turn to stand sideways with your racket behind you, perpendicular to the net with the racket head tilted down.
3. As the ball bounces, swing the racket head towards the ball and watch the ball, not where you want it to go. After contact, continue the path of the racket upwards finishing with a bend at the elbow and a full follow through. It isn’t just a tap or short stroke unless at the net or playing a certain type of shot. You don’t need to swing fast, aim for contact in the middle of your strings. 4. If the ball is heading behind you, unit turn the other way and you will hit a backhand. It is personal whether you add your second hand for extra strength and support as the pathway of your dominant hand is led by the back of your hand. Again, a full swing will help. 5. Three key points for best chance at contact:
• Out Front. Hit the ball while it is still in front of you.
• Comfortable Distance. Not too close or too far from the ball.
• Waist Height. Move your body forwards or backwards and wait for the ball to drop to around your belly button. Overheads are fun but an advanced shot and harder to control. 6. Court Etiquette. With its rich history and requiring concentration and athleticism there are a few requirements to share courts happily.
EMILY PARK PHOTOGRAPHY
• Try to not be too loud. It can put people off their shots.
• If your ball crosses onto another court, apologize and wait for them to give it back. • When arriving/leaving, only walk behind someone’s court when their point is over. This is for safety and is good etiquette.
To Keep Advancing
Play a lot. We get better at sport with mileage. Take some coaching. There are many things you might never figure out without a trained eye. Work on cardio, agility and hand-eye co-ordination when not playing. Tennis is very accessible in Fernie with four outdoor courts in James White Park, owned by the City of Fernie and free for public use. They are shared with Fernie Sports Co. who rent out two at a time for coaching. The Fernie Tennis Community can book courts for tournaments and group play, with the season running approximately May-October. Lucy Harrup is the owner of Fernie Sports Co., and a tennis coach. She is passionate about sharing the sport of tennis with locals and visitors alike! Visit ferniesportsco.com for coaching options, equipment and all things tennis.

Local's Perspective Gina Rino
Fernie Family Acupuncture There are many reasons I was drawn back to Fernie, and what stands out after family, is the mountains and the feeling of security they provide, much like being cradled by Mother Earth. Growing up in Fernie, as a child, one looks up to those supernatural creatures and they represent everything that is possible. To me, the physical nature of the valley and mountains embody Spirit of soaring aspiration.
HEALTH AND WELLNESS
In relation to my career in health and wellness, that aspiration is to see the health and wellness community grow in the direction of inclusivity – inclusivity that honours people who make different choices for their health. My field of work is what some consider alternative medicine, but I have always been drawn to ancient forms of healing and what is alternative to one, is foundational to another. Fernie seemed like an obvious choice given the strong connection to the powers of nature and since I have arrived, the support from the community has been astounding. My own spiritual growth has been exponential and I am grateful for the inclusivity intrinsic to the community here. Q. We live in the Elk Valley because… A. Because it is beautiful. This is the valley my grandfather chose for his family to settle in. Q. Summer in Fernie is so special because…
Q. Something we make sure to do each summer in the valley (at least once!) is... A. Hike to at least one of the magical waterfalls, better yet, two! Q. One Fernie secret we are willing to share is... A. The Elk Valley, The Land of the Raven, is healing. Make sure to walk barefoot on the Land and to get dirt on your hands and under your fingernails often.
Visitors and residents alike are known to go hard this time of year to fit it all in and experience all that Fernie has to offer. From the abundance of recreational opportunities, to the plethora of culinary experiences, to the many shopping, dining and entertainment options… whatever it is you are going hard at, you may find that a little balance is needed. Fortunately, Fernie also has these services and offerings in abundance. Need to stretch those sore muscles? Unwind after a long day? Recover from a long night? Work on healing a nagging injury? You will find solutions to all of your health and lifestyle needs while here, and enjoy the process.
A. It is by far the most incredible place to be. The energy and air are intoxicating; you know, when the air is still, just warm enough, and the mountains are a black silhouette against a mid-summer night sky.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS
Tricks and Trends to Keep You Playing BY HEATHER LEWIS To this day I reflect on my Anatomy 400 professor, Dr Robert Steadward who showed us in the cadaver lab how each human body is unique. When we relate this to injury prevention with the plethora of sports available to us in the summer, there are endless options but what can be most helpful are some tricks of the trade and trends in sports medicine that could keep us playing longer and/or harder during the warmer seasons. Here are three favourites:
Stretching
Which stretching is best? Dynamic, active, static, PNF, passive or ballistic? This is a very debatable topic. Rather than getting into the details of each, consider the most familiar and time-honoured: static/passive stretching. As a general rule of thumb, if you want to increase your flexibility you need to do it frequently; aim for 5-7 days a week. Each stretch should be done 2-3 times. Remember, this is to increase flexibility, not all muscle groups will need this frequency – focus on tight ones. To maintain flexibility and keep those gains, you should aim to stretch whole body 2-3 days per week. Keep in mind that it is possible to injure yourself through stretching! No matter if your muscles are “cold or warm,” a safe perceived intensity is in the 4-5/10 range holding for between 30 and 60 seconds. If you reach 45 to 60 seconds and your intensity of stretch has not decreased, you may in fact be stretching too hard. Try a lighter perceived intensity. Another thing to think about is location of the stretch. For example, if we relate this to the lower body, and you want the best glute (buttock) stretch, you must first figure out where the glute stretch should be felt. Do not spend time stretching the glute if you cannot get past a pinch in the front of your hip or a strong sensation in your groin. Try a different stretch or alter the angle/body
SUBMITTED PHOTOS
position to achieve this. It is not advised to put excessive compression or strain on joints or nerves.
Recovery Tools
How many of the following recovery tools have you tried: foam roller, vibrating foam roller, roller stick, massage ball, hockey ball, lacrosse ball, compression tights, compression sleeves, compression socks, massage gun, air compression boots, electric stim unit, inversion table, ice bath, hot tub, epsom salt bath, biking, swimming, running, walking, stretching, PNF stretching, electrolyte drinks, massage therapy, kinesiology taping, BEMER units…? There are endless options available, some come with crazy price tags. Bottom line is you need to see what you should and can make time for, and what is most effective for your body.
Bracing
Have you been told or do you think that you will get weaker from bracing a joint such as a knee or ankle? Weaker is not really the appropriate word and bracing is not necessarily immobilizing. Muscle loss, atrophy or loss of balance/proprioception are more appropriate terms, and this is still arguable. In general, bracing does not cause atrophy; lack of movement/being sedentary is what causes this. If you are able to exercise and are getting pain relief (during and
after) while wearing a brace this is a good thing. Have a sport medicine professional such as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist, Kinesiologist, Athletic Therapist, Physiotherapist etc. prescribe safe and specific exercises for the braced joint and good things can happen. You may even be able to stop using the brace! Sometimes using a simple sleeve type brace can improve “proprioception” and help reduce pain/ override the brain and allow you to move. Other times it takes a custom, rigid brace to support the joint or “unload” the cartilage, meniscus or osteoarthritic compartment of the knee to give you a result. If you knew a brace could help reduce pain, slow joint degeneration or avoid the need for surgery, would you invest? At the end of the day, if we can have fun, play as hard as we want and not end up with an acute or chronic injury we are winning! Motion is medicine. Heather Lewis is a Certified Athletic Therapist and has owned/operated Fernie Athletic Therapy and Rehabilitation since 2006. Athletic Therapy is for Athletes and for everyone! She and her colleague Kayla Boger are proud musculoskeletal/orthopedic nerds. Like many, they are always learning and fascinated by the human body. Riding for Mental Health BY BECCA FAHEY
Studies show that spending time in nature can improve our mental health and sharpen our cognition. It came to no surprise then that when a local avid biker decided to bike from sunrise to sunset for Summer Solstice in 2020, as the pandemic was in its infancy and we were faced with so many unknowns, he approached the Elk Valley Suicide Task force to partner and raise much needed funds and awareness through what would be called the Solstice Ride for Mental Health.
That first year, a small group began the day at 5am to ride up Slunt and by the evening, finished with nearly 20 people for the last ride on Swine Flu. Everyone who took part in this event commented on the amazing energy they experienced, and that watching the sunset at the end of the day was a moment that would live with them forever. The event has evolved to be more inclusive to engage all members of the community to come out and enjoy being active in the outdoors, whatever that looks like to each person. Creating conversations, talking openly about mental health and breaking the stigma all while building
SUBMITTED PHOTO
awareness and relationships in our beautiful community. With several routes to choose from, there will be something for everyone. This year’s event will take place on Saturday June 18, and everyone is invited to get involved however that looks like for them. The Task Force will have a Home Base where different stages of the Solstice Ride will begin and end. There will also be a Mental Health Booth set up throughout the day with different resources where people can go to learn, talk and feel supported, as well as music, food trucks, and more.
This Summer Solstice, consider supporting mental health, joining a friend for a ride, and helping raise funds for an important organization in our community. Full event details can be found at evstf.ca. Please know that there is no registration fee or requirement for this event, as it is not a race. It is people's own responsibility to ride in a safe manner and decide how much and how long they want to ride for. Becca Fahey is a volunteer member of the Elk Valley Suicide Task Force, an avid mountain biker, and is grateful to be able to spend her time in this wonderful mountain town. ARTS AND CULTURE Local's Perspective Caleb Brown DJ Naturalist
My brother and I started DJing just over 10 years ago. Our friend Levi owned a controller (a digital turntable set) and he taught us how to play. About a year later I was walking down Main Street past The Central and noticed their sidewalk sign had "Open Stage Night" on it so I popped inside and saw Julie who was running The Central at the time. She agreed to let Sam and I play that night and it was so successful that she asked us if we wanted to play again next week. Just like that, our first ever residency was born. Since then we have had residencies at The Northern (Space Camp), The Royal (Supernatural Thursdays) and most recently Supernatural Saturdays back at The Central. The local electronic music scene has grown us into the DJs we are today. Many large DJs roll into Fernie either coming from shows in Vancouver, heading to Calgary or the other way around. Fernie has given us the opportunity to open for and become friends with many of these DJs. This has opened doors for us all over the British Columbia music scene including playing at one of the main stages at Shambhala, which is one of Canada's largest (if not the largest) electronic music festivals. The music scene in Fernie was obviously affected over the last two years but as of this spring the nightlife has been back in full swing. Our girlfriends also started
Sam and Caleb playing at The Living Room Stage at Shambhala (2019) with their wordsmith Drew Hampson. Olivier Gosselin Photo
DJing recently and are now making their own impact on the British Columbia music scene and share the Residency with us at The Central. We hope that nightlife continues to flourish during the summer months in Fernie so we can keep our night going with local friends and large out-of-town acts. We hope to see you on the dance floor! Q. We live in the Elk Valley because… A. A new friend asked me this question just the other day and my reply went something like this - Besides the great skiing and biking I stay in Fernie because of my amazing group of friends, my family and largely because of the amazing electronic music scene! Q. Summer in Fernie is so special because… A. I love summer for the biking (obviously) but also the patio sessions and the outdoor parties that my friends and I have at the Mogul Smoker site.
While recreation is likely what brought you here, you will soon find yourself emerged in Fernie’s cultural side. Rich in history, you’ll find it hard to miss as you walk alongside the iconic brick buildings on Victoria Ave. It is also home to a variety of events, alluring locals from their homes and visitors from around the world. On top of this, there are many talented artists who reside here, adding colour to our lives through their studios, galleries, murals, sculptures, music and words. Consider enjoying the Fernie Art Walk, or at the very least visit the Fernie Museum or Arts Station to fill your cultural cup. We promise it won’t disappoint.
Q. Something we make sure to do each summer in the valley (at least once!) is... A. Head to Koocanusa for some boating and beach time! Q. One Fernie secret we are willing to share is... A. Best bar in town? The Central! Maybe that's not a secret anymore, it's finally being recognized as it should! FERNIEFIX.COM | SUMMER GUIDE 2022 || 45 45 FERNIEFIX.COM

Local's Perspective Greg Barrow Edge of the World
My journey to Fernie actually began in Banner Elk, North Carolina where in 1981 I opened a white water rafting business. Banner Elk is a ski resort town of 4000. That spring I attended the outdoor show in Las Vegas and in the parking lot of the convention centre were Jake Burton, Tom Sims, Chuck Barfoot and a few others trying to sell snowboards. They weren't allowed inside. I loved what they were doing and thought the boards were the coolest things I had ever seen so I ordered some. So now I'm a snowboard shop as well as rafting. Fast forward to 1999 and talking to Craig Kelly and Jason Ford in Vegas at another trade show they convinced me that I should move to Fernie and open a shop there. So, I visited that spring, fell in love with the hill and the town and moved there that fall and opened Edge of the World - Fernie. Fernie's shopping scene has grown quite a bit since I've been here, mostly in the summer. Fishing, mountain biking, and just tourism in general is on the uptick for sure. 2nd Ave has developed into a great shopping corridor as all of the stores continue to improve and diversify.
Fernie is a wonderful town with great people and a laid back, very friendly attitude. Everyone wants to be here and so they are happy. I'm happy to see Fernie continue at the pace it is. Working in Fernie in the outdoor industry is super fun because you are helping people have fun! Very rewarding! Q. We live in the Elk Valley because… A. Because of the people, the outdoor activities and the beauty. Q. Summer in Fernie is so special because…
Small, boutique shops each with its own unique offerings and experiences line both the downtown and highway shopping areas, and with each year Fernie welcomes additions to its small-town shopping experience. An epic view of Fernie Alpine Resort on the Lizard Range takes your breath away as you walk from shop to shop, enjoying cafés and restaurants and socializing along the way makes it even more enjoyable. Whether you’re after sports gear or apparel, furnishings for your home, a new outfit for a special event, or a gift for that certain someone, we guarantee that you will find what you’re looking for and more in Fernie.
A. Because of the biking, the climate, the long days and the beauty. Q. Something we make sure to do each summer in the valley (at least once!) is... A. Each summer I make sure to paddle some white water at least once. Q. One Fernie secret we are willing to share is... A. Not gonna expose any Fernie secrets, sorry!

FOOD AND DRINK
Elk Valley Pizza and Chilango I am a proud 5th generation Fernieite foodie, who loves everything food and entertainment. I first became involved in the F&B sector in Vancouver when I worked for Northland Properties Corporation (Moxies, Sharkclub, Boulevard, Dallas Stars etc.). I led a team in applying for permits, leasing, licensing, financing and acquisition deals. Along the way I met my husband and business partner Jose (Pepe) Luna. He worked on the construction side and I was in corporate. Pepe is from Mexico City and is what you would call a “Chilango” a slang demonym. After many trips to Mexico, and living in the City back in 2017, I immersed myself in the culture and incredible food scene. Once we settled in Fernie, we discussed the idea of starting a food business. As luck and timing would have it, we ended up purchasing the Elk Valley Pizza Shoppe in 2020. Our idea was, operate the shop, keep the good name going, and utilize the commercial kitchen space to prepare for a Mexican food concept and launch a food truck. As the year went on, we stumbled on an opportunity to secure a space, and our Mexican food vision became what is now known as Chilango. Fernie has taken off and will continue to do so. It has been exciting and welcoming to see so many new spaces offering ethnic flavours, fusion food and culinary gourmet masterpieces. We have incredibly talented chefs, sommeliers and caterers who have really made their mark and created a unique, vibrant Fernie food scene.
Q. We live in the Elk Valley because… A. We love the mountains and community. My family still lives here and it’s an amazing place to work and play. Q. Summer in Fernie is so special because… A. The days are long and there is so much to do and explore. A typical summer day for me is coffee in my backyard in the morning, followed by a bike ride with my son, lunch with the family and a date to the lake in the afternoon. If I’m feeling extra adventurous it might be a day hike with friends or camping.
Regularly we hear how surprised visitors are with the culinary options available to them in Fernie. And to be honest, we’re surprised! This diversity has been building for some time and continues to grow as new restaurants and food trucks hit the scene, and those here for some time continue to reinvent themselves. Whatever your taste buds desire, from gourmet pizza to authentic ethnic cuisine to traditional pub fare, you will find it here and on top of the amazing dining experience, you’ll enjoy fantastic service and fabulous environments.
Q. Something we make sure to do each summer in the valley (at least once!) is... A. River rafting! We absolutely love to do a day with Canyon Raft. It’s so incredible to be on the water and cruise down that canyon! Just an unreal experience. Q. One Fernie secret we are willing to share is... A. Is anything really a secret anymore?

Local's Perspective Kirsten Madsen Island Lake Lodge
Back in Ontario, I was working in the private ski club industry and there was a strong focus on guest experience and forming a genuine connection with the families you see year after year. When I had the opportunity to move to BC and join the Island Lake team, much like their winter operation, the summer guests typically stay at the lodge year after year, for their anniversaries, family reunions or to just enjoy this very special place. I love seeing guests return and share stories of past visits and their fond memories at the lodge. It really compels me to ensure guests feel welcome and taken care of. We are very big on personal touches and elevated service. As we ride the tail end of this pandemic, it has allowed me to observe a real shift in what guests are looking for when they go away. Staying at a unique destination (in my case a backcountry lodge) has renewed itself when it comes to experience. Guests really appreciate their surroundings; they take their time – they slow down and smell the roses. It’s been interesting to watch more and more guests opt to go for hikes or play board games together vs being on their phones or glued to an iPad. I think we will see travellers utilize amenities, facilities, and common spaces more than we ever have before, because through this pandemic, they’ve been so sequestered to their own spaces – they want to get back to having fun! Personally, I think the future looks very bright. Trends project a huge spike in free independent travel, and I think we will see folks of all ages embracing how incredible it feels to go explore. And I know those of us in this industry are ready to welcome them. Q. We live in the Elk Valley because… A. The lifestyle you can have here is exceptional. Truly something for everyone. The moment you finish work, whatever season, there is a handful of your favourite activities just outside your door. Once you get a taste for this area, it’s hard to imagine ever living anywhere else. Not to mention the views…
WHERE TO STAY
Q. Summer in Fernie is so special because… A. Our time spent outdoors is paramount. It stays sunny long into the evenings and really affords the opportunity to get in all kinds of outdoor activities with plenty of time to grab a table on a patio downtown or fire up the BBQ at home. I love winter, but personally, I think Fernie shines equally as bright in the summer. Q. Something we make sure to do each summer in the valley (at least once!) is... A. That would probably have to be a river float! Once the water level mellows out around August, floating the Elk River is the place to be. Q. One Fernie secret we are willing to share is...
One of the first decisions when planning a vacation is where to stay. Does staying on the hill or in town better suit your needs? Is your group large enough that a house rental is the best option? Do you need to be within walking and biking distance from any specific areas or landmarks? Or perhaps a campground or RV park are the best fit. Fortunately, in Fernie you’ll find a variety of options including hotels, motels, chalets, condos, camping and houses available, and if you’re short on time and are finding it difficult to make a decision, consider working with one of the companies specializing in this area.
A. Like me, when you move to town, you can be so intimidated by Fernie’s ski terrain, bike/ hike trail networks and deep backcountry. The secret is, for every beginner or novice, there’s classes, workshops, groups, guides, clubs and friendly locals to help you along the way. And this town is also full of incredible shops with experts who can help get you the right equipment AND also tell you what gear you don’t need.

REAL ESTATE AND DEVELOPMENT
Local's Perspective Jack Norris and Russ Trand Freestone Construction
As long-term residents of Fernie, we were hearing daily about the difficulty in finding builders in town; especially ones that were willing to undertake renovations. We felt this situation would only get tougher with the onset of the COVID pandemic and the continued downturn in Calgary promoting strong in-migration to Fernie. We had both been working with an established builder in town for several years (Russ as a Project Manager and Jack as a Lead-Hand Carpenter) and while it would have been very easy to continue working for them, we felt the opportunity to start our own business had never been greater. Since we started the company, we have been fortunate to have worked on some really interesting and challenging projects, with some really great clients. Most of them wouldn’t have hired us without references from other people in our community, which of course is very gratifying. We have been fortunate to have worked on some really interesting and challenging projects since we started the company, with some great clients. Most of them would not have hired us without references from other people in our community, which of course is really gratifying. The greatest thing about this journey, however, has been working with such talented, passionate, and similar minded staff. Also, developing a corporate culture that everyone buys into - we have a lot
of fun at work and genuinely enjoy each other’s company! Without them we would be nothing. It’s hard to miss the current building boom in Fernie and the fantastic opportunity it’s provided to builders, carpenters, and subtrades to make a more consistent living yearround. This is obviously a good thing, but it does open up a lot of challenges in terms of affordability of construction, housing for workers and expansion into the accessible green spaces that many of us hold dear that make Fernie so special. We hope that our City, the Regional District and industry can navigate a path through these challenges in a sustainable and environmentally considerate way. Q. We live in the Elk Valley because… A. It’s one of the best places in the World to live! We love the accessibility of the outdoors, the small-town vibe, and our community values. It’s hard to imagine a better place to raise our kids! Q. Summer in Fernie is so special because… A. We can shed three layers after winter. Q. Something we make sure to do each summer in the valley (at least once!) is... A. Run Heiko’s.
Over the years, Fernie has increasingly become a popular destination for second home owners. During the pandemic, many of these individuals made the move permanently to this community, alongside additional people who were able to work remotely and wanted to move away from the big city to a small town nestled within the mountains. Development can be a touchy subject especially in a small town like Fernie. There is a desire to retain the elements that make Fernie the unique town it is, the elements that have drawn people here in the first place. Fortunately, there has been support and interest in renovating or building within developed areas, developing with minimal impact on the land, promotion of multi-unit development to decrease pressure on the market, and incorporating green spaces into developments.
Q. One Fernie secret we are willing to share is... A. Miner’s Mud tastes better than it sounds and is probably the best coffee in town! FERNIEFIX.COM | SUMMER GUIDE 2022 || 65 65 FERNIEFIX.COM

Your Summer Yard Maintenance Program BY CAM MERTZ
Did you know that the grass family is the third largest family of flowering plants, with over 10,000 species? Overwhelming, isn’t it? Summer is around the corner and soon we will be accessing our lawns and gardens so it’s time to start thinking about your summer maintenance program. Many benefits can be realized by having a maintenance plan and executing it successfully, including a fifteen percent improvement to property values, creating a pleasing extension of a family’s living space, and making it safe for play. Your plan should reference three key components: Spring Cleanup, Mowing, Water and Fertilizer, and depending on how you prioritize your ‘yard value’ you will determine the effort required for each component.
Spring Cleanup
Assess your thatch! Thatch plays a vital role in the health of your lawn. It can improve wear tolerance and provide good insulation for hot and cold swings. If it’s too thick (greater than 0.5in/1.3cm) it can actually repel water which can result in shallow rooting and restrict the movement of fertilizers through the soil. A robust hand rake will help to remove the top layer of thatch while a power rake can mechanically remove the top thatch and roots as it penetrates the surface.
Assess the Ground!
Soils sustain the turf grass by providing minerals water and air. Turf grass pulls carbon dioxide from the air to form carbohydrates. If the ground is hard there is less chance for healthy growing conditions. Aeration is a mechanical action that removes soil cores reducing compaction. You can do
this manually by depressing a pitchfork into the lawn or mechanically with a specialized machine. Proper mowing, irrigation and fertilizer practice ensures a healthy, disease-resistant lawn.
Mowing
Mowing affects all components of all turf grass quality. It ultimately determines the density, texture, colour, uniformity and smoothness. Always use sharp blades, never remove more than 1/3 of the grass blade in a single mowing. When your lawn is mowed at an average height of 2.5in/5cm, most of its root system is located in the upper 18in/45.7cm of the soil which is ideal for capture of fertilizer and water. Improper mowing techniques affects rooting which also affects shoot growth and ultimately determines vigour and persistence of the lawn. Avoid mowing when it’s wet and consider not removing clippings, it aids in returning nutrients to the turf and soil.
Fertilizer
This is a key component in the lawn care program as it provides the required nutrients for your lawn and keeps it beautiful and healthy. In the spring you want to target the root zone so apply fertilizer with a high phosphorous number (5-10-0). In the summer you want to feed your lawn nitrogen for that lush, green ‘golf’ appearance; a fertilizer with high nitrogen should look like this (30-5-5); in the fall you want to ensure your lawn is
protected over winter so apply a fertilizer with a high potassium value (5-5-10). You can apply various fertilizer in granular or liquid form and can also experiment with layers of compost.
Irrigation
Irrigation is important for supplementing rainfall, washing in certain fertilizers and pesticides, and keeping the soil moist for the establishment of the turf components. Best results are achieved when irrigation is applied in the cool temps of early morning when there is less chance of water loss through evaporation. If you are feeling overwhelmed, consider reducing the amount of maintained landscape area or plant other options such as ‘Bee Turf’ that do not require mechanical control. Your effort in your yard is decided by you and guided by your summer maintenance program. Did you know that aside from the aesthetic enhancements, your lawns and gardens help the environment and air purification, oxygen generation, erosion control, water conservation, and water purification? Lawns are known to facilitate temperature modifications demonstrating 1520 degrees cooler than hardscapes! Cam Mertz is a self-proclaimed lawn nerd and is the owner of Mow and Snow. If you should have a question about your lawn or garden, you should call him! mowandsnow.ca FERNIEFIX.COM | SUMMER GUIDE 2022 || 67 67 FERNIEFIX.COM

SERVICES Local's Perspective Vince Mo
Tourism Fernie You will either catch me out and around town with a large camera shooting events and all things great about Fernie, or tucked away in the Tourism Fernie office where I handle their social media channels. From leaving a career in forensics, to becoming a snowboard instructor, to diving into photography and social media marketing (plus many more roles in between), it’s been quite the journey getting here. Being a part of the Tourism Fernie team has granted me so many fantastic opportunities to get out and engage with all of the many great individuals, businesses, and locations that make this valley such an amazing place to be. The travel sector like most others had rather the harsh hand dealt by the Coronavirus pandemic. Yet, even in such testing times it made me proud to see the industry and the communities which they operate within continually adapting to survive the everchanging situation. The last two years has drawn some positivity in reinforcing my views as to the value of tourism and the importance of what it brings to personal wellness, and supporting communities and businesses. Moving forward both as somebody working in tourism and as a regular tourist, I personally feel a new admiration of the many small things we all may overlook on a daily basis. Find beauty in what is around you, and cherish the small face-to-face conversations

that may spark up on your travels. A vacation is more than just travelling to a destination. It was never the plan to stay beyond a winter. These are the famous words of probably every non-Fernie resident who has spent a winter here who then subsequently finds ways to shoehorn themselves into the community and to a new place to call home. Yet, 2022 will be my eighth summer in Fernie, and it will continue to be so with zero regrets. Q. We live in the Elk Valley because… Great people, stunning scenery, and there aren’t too many places where you can smash out a mountain bike ride straight before or after work. Q. Summer in Fernie is so special because… The sunny warm days brings out the best in the everyone, and we for sure get a good amount of sun during summer. Q. Something we make sure to do each summer in the valley (at least once!) is...
With each year it becomes even more apparent that it is indeed the citizens of this community and the many engaged visitors that truly make Fernie the thriving town it is known for. During the summer months especially, people come together and create a season full of energy, activity, adventure and art, a season that somehow manages to out-shine the one prior year. It is inspiring to be surrounded by so many active community members, whether they are volunteering their time, organizing an event, donating resources or participating. While in Fernie, enjoying one of the many events, outdoor spaces, guided tours and more, take the time to recognize and appreciate the many organizations and individuals who made it possible.
Load up the truck with camping gear and head out somewhere without cellular coverage. There’re plenty of options in the valley. No social media updates, beeping notifications, work emails. Digital escapism is total bliss. Q. One Fernie secret we are willing to share is… If you think summer is amazing here, wait until you’ve seen the golden colours of fall season… FERNIEFIX.COM | SUMMER GUIDE 2022 || 71 71 FERNIEFIX.COM

Did you know Fernie is a very easy to navigate by bike or foot? The City of Fernie has an extensive system of trails that circumnavigates the town, most of which follows alongside the Elk River. Use the map at the back of this guide to see how you can use this system to get where you want to go!
NAVIGATION Navigation is important, both when en-route to your destination and while enjoying your time once there. One of the most attractive features of this mountain town is how close everything is and how quickly you can connect to a city pathway, many following along the Elk River, to get to your destination. Getting to the downtown from most locations takes less than 20 minutes by foot, and often times it’s quicker to bike to a trailhead than to drive. Additionally, there are options to get around in the valley from BC Transit to taxis to Health Connections. Grab a map, we promise it won’t take long to figure out what works best for you!

ELK RIVER MAP 8 tips to play safe on the Elk River
1. Know where you are going and be aware of hazards i.e. rapids, sweepers and logjams. Stay to the inside on sharp corners to avoid colliding with woody debris. If you do collide with debris, climb on top to avoid getting trapped under water.
Dangerous Log Jam: Caution
2. Always wear a PFD/lifejacket and shoes for walking on rocks and pushing off obstacles. 3. If you end up in the water, swim defensively on your back with feet downstream avoiding obstacles like rocks, trees and logjams where you can easily get pinned. 4. Be prepared for cold water and changes in weather conditions. There is a high risk of hypothermia if part or all of your body is in the Elk River for a length of time. 5. Lose the booze and keep a clear head. You might need it to help a friend or avoid a bad situation. Celebrate your float or paddle on a warm sunny beach or deck afterward. 6. The Elk River can change channels, form rapids and build or remove log jams at any time. Local knowledge is your best bet for up-to-date, accurate information. 7. Take a swift water rescue course. These courses are designed to help you recognize potential hazards on the river and learn how to handle them if it can’t be avoided. 8. Use the buddy system; paddling by yourself is dangerous.
