Highlights Day3 There are actresses who have given shape to the cinematic innovations from the 1960s on, and one is Stefania Sandrelli (cover). Muse to Bertolucci and Scola, she has shared sets with Mastroianni, Hoffman and De Niro. She is a star who never lost touch with her popular roots, something that cannot be said of all great performers, able to tread the line between innocence and mischievousness, seduction and irony.

Action and reaction. Jason Bourne once again takes on the challenge of a film in constant movement, similar to its star Matt Damon, this time up against a Vincent Cassel more ruthless than ever. Meanwhile a detective story meets the paranormal in the dark atmosphere of Interchange, the first Malaysian film to be shown in Piazza Grande.

A set of directors dear to Locarno’s heart are back, from the Shakespearian digressions of Matías Piñeiro in his first and most free to date New York-set film to Covi and Frimmel’s Mister Universo, a delicate story of love between an acrobat and a lion tamer, which unites the positive outlook of Frank Capra and the reality of a provincial Italy where time has stopped.

A whirlwind of words and sounds for a packed Saturday in Locarno: Luc Bondy’s last marivaudage, told by an exceptional trio, Garrel/ Huppert/Ogier, then film and psychedelia according to Gaspar Noé, and Peter Handke seen from inside (his house).

Animals on the Festival stage: the retired monkey from Phenomena (in Mister Universo), the point-of-view shots of hunting falcons (The Challenge) and a lamb lost in the rooms of a slaughterhouse (Gorge Cœur Ventre). In three different movies, the animal world holds up a mirror to mankind.

I have always considered myself like a member of an orchestra, who in order to play well needs first and foremost a good conductor. Germi, Bertolucci, Scola: they managed to charge their work with a passion that you could completely sense on the set as well

Stefania Sandrelli, torniamo alla radice di quello che è stato un vero e proprio destino cinematografico.

Con un’entrata dalla porta principale. Debutto a 15 anni e subito trovarsi di fronte a registi come Pietro Germi e attori come Marcello Mastroianni…

Ricordo ancora benissimo il viaggio in treno fatto da Viareggio a Roma per partecipare al provino di un regista come Pietro Germi, di cui io conoscevo già i film. Avevo solo 15 anni, ma quando mi sono trovata davanti a lui non ho avuto alcun batticuore. Mi aveva chiamato dopo aver visto alcune mie fotografie, ma non mi scelse subito, mi fece aspettare più di un mese, tempo in cui iniziai a lavorare ad altri due film, Gioventù di notte e Il federale. Poi quando partirono le riprese di Divorzio all’italiana, sempre nel 1961, ero talmente affascinata dalla presenza di Marcello Mastroianni che mi ritrovavo a spiarlo di continuo. Aveva un carattere indolente, riusciva ad addormentarsi durante la seduta del trucco eppure rimaneva sempre al tempo stesso sornione. Un vero gentleman, così protettivo nei miei confronti, visto che allora ero solo una ragazzina e iniziavo a prendere coscienza del mio aspetto fisico soltanto attraverso lo sguardo degli altri.

Con Pietro Germi poi lei lavorerà in più film. E lo stesso farà con Bernardo Bertolucci, Ettore Scola, Mario Monicelli. Rapporti di lunga durata…

Forse tutto nasce dal fatto che mi sono sempre considerata come un elemento di un’orchestra che per suonare aveva bisogno in primo luogo di un bravo direttore. E tutti quei registi lo erano, anche perché riuscivano a immettere nel loro lavoro una carica di passione che avvertivi pienamente anche sul set. A volte Germi, quando si metteva dietro la macchina da presa, seguiva le scene, partecipando, ridendo, cantando. E mi ricordo una volta con Bernardo Bertolucci: stavamo girando delle scene notturne per Io ballo da sola, iniziò ad albeggiare e lui si arrabbiò come un bambino. Era talmente preso dal suo lavoro che gli dispiaceva così tanto doverlo interrompere.

A proposito di Bernardo Bertolucci, al Festival riproiettiamo un capolavoro come Il conformista… È un film a cui sono molto legata per tanti motivi. E uno di questi è l’aver condiviso il set con attori verso cui ho sempre nutrito stima e affetto. Per Jean-Louis Trintignant, ma anche per Dominique Sanda. Su un set non è che con-

ti l’amicizia tra colleghi, ma il tipo di relazione che si crea è qualcosa di fondamentale anche per l’esito del film. A volte l’affiatamento nasce anche da uno sguardo, da una gentilezza d’animo fatta in un momento in cui l’altro si trova in difficoltà. Io lo dico sempre: pur avendo esordito in un periodo di pieno divismo del cinema italiano, io non ho mai voluto né cercato di essere una diva. Mi è sempre interessato cercare un rapporto di vicinanza con le donne che rappresentavo e non a caso una delle cose di cui sono più orgogliosa è l’affetto che ho sempre ricevuto dal pubblico femminile.

Tutto questo in un periodo in cui erano i grandi attori internazionali che venivano in Italia a recitare.

Lei ha lavorato con Dustin Hoffman, Robert De Niro, Gérard Depardieu, Philippe Noiret…

Ho avuto la fortuna di lavorare con questi grandi attori, ma anche con grandi registi francesi come Jean-Pierre Melville e Alain Corneau. Poi, certo, da questo punto di vista, l’esperienza fatta per Novecento con Robert De Niro, Gérard Depardieu, Burt Lancaster, Donald Sutherland resta qualcosa di irripetibile per il legame che si è instaurato tra set, cene in compagnia e buon vino. Ma non solo. Il film aveva una portata storica ed era coinvolgente anche per i forti temi antifascisti che toccava. Ricordo che nella scena notturna in cui il mio personaggio doveva andare in giro per il paese a dire a tutti che i fascisti avevano bruciato la Casa del popolo e alcuni vecchietti erano morti, io ho pianto a ogni ciak. Al cinema per un attore il pianto è sempre un’arma a doppio taglio. Ma io lì mi commuovevo ogni volta.

Rimanendo in tema, quali sono le armi a cui un attore non dovrebbe mai rinunciare?

Prima di tutto, quella piena disponibilità nei confronti del cinema che va oltre il film o il ruolo che s’interpreta. Ci devono essere gioia, passione, ma anche quel coraggio che ti permette di fare scelte non scontate. Come il mio ruolo nel film La chiave di Tinto Brass. Sapevo che le scene di nudo l’avrebbero fatta da padrone, ma quando ho letto la sceneggiatura sono stata intrigata dall’ironia che si respirava. Per un attore il film è prima di tutto una sceneggiatura, che la pellicola deve sempre superare. Anche il fatto di non prendersi troppo sul serio è una dote fondamentale per difendere il bambino che c’è in noi.

Focus on Matt Damon

L’arco di Jason Bourne si sviluppa lungo quattro film e circa quindici anni. Come si è evoluto questo personaggio nel tempo? E come è cambiato Matt Damon nei suoi panni?

Jason si è notevolmente trasformato: quando lo incontriamo all’inizio del primo film non sa neppure il suo nome, né conosce la sua storia. Si evolve ovviamente nel percorso di scoperta attraverso i film. Io sono cambiato anche più di lui in questi anni. È strano per me parlarne, perché sono volati: quando penso alla mia vita è successo così tanto. Ero un single ventinovenne quando ho iniziato, adesso sono sposato con quattro bambini, la mia vita di tutti i giorni è totalmente differente. È più diversa da quella di Jason Bourne di quando ho cominciato, la trovo una cosa buona.

In cosa rivede se stesso quando impersona Jason Bourne?

Sento di essere profondamente connesso al personaggio: lo ammiro perché credo sia una brava persona in fondo al cuore, è una figura con cui ci si può relazionare. È questo che Doug Liman mi disse anni fa: non riesco a connettermi con James Bond, voglio un personaggio per i nostri tempi, una spia che riconosciamo come uno di noi.

Come i film precedenti, anche Jason Bourne è immerso nelle contraddizioni del nostro presente, come ad esempio quella tra privacy e sicurezza. Volete mandare un messaggio preciso al pubblico?

No, non vogliamo rispondere alle domande, semplicemente cerchiamo di renderle attuali. Questo è un problema fondamentale di oggi ed è anche l’argomento principale del film. Ci sarà sempre questa frizione tra gli apparati di Intelligence e le nostre libertà civili, si cercherà sempre qualche scappatoia. Dalla parte della privacy si cercherà invece sempre di difendersi da questo, è veramente pericoloso dare a qualcuno troppo potere. Penso sia davvero la questione fondamentale dei nostri tempi.

In cosa Paul Greengrass è diverso dagli altri grandi registi con cui ha lavorato?

Ho fatto quattro film con lui; venendo dal documentario cattura la realtà, è incredibile nel capire come il mondo si presenta. Dirige con il solo fine di catturarlo, di renderlo reale. È invece accomunato agli altri registi dall’essere aperto alla collaborazione. La verità è che i maestri con cui ho lavorato ascoltano tutti e non danno indicazioni se non alla fine; sono interessati a ogni opinione, a ogni idea.

Poi decidono qual è la migliore, scelgono quella che emerge sulle altre.

It shifts back and forth between two frames – the unfolding present of New York, and the last day of Camila (Agustina Muñoz) in Buenos Aires before she embarks on a residency abroad, literally taking the place of her friend Carmen (María Villar) at an unnamed American institution.

Piñeiro himself has translated Shakespeare to contemporary Argentine Spanish, came to the US on a Radcliffe fellowship, and supported himself as a language teacher… but here is where the

comparisons end. His act of “cinematic translation” takes some unsuspecting twists, including ineffable dissolves, Scott Joplin music (befitting Woody Allen’s Manhattan), and the casting of recognizable indie actors (Keith Poulson, Mati Diop). (Also, the Argentine actors can’t speak as rapidly in English, making for a less dense work and perhaps accounting for the longer-than-typical running time.) Camila’s adventures are both amorous and personal, Rohmerian and Rivettean, as she hops between boyfriends and eventually, in a masterfully staged, deeply emotional encounter, meets her absent father (filmmaker Dan Sallitt). Always delightful, Hermia & Helena sees Piñeiro making an auteur film that fits into his oeuvre while expanding it in exciting directions – en route, he makes New York his own.

Shooting films with extraordinary people who play themselves in our fictional stories evokes in us a great, continuous fascination rainer frimmel Sono trascorsi oltre dieci anni da quando Tizza Covi e Rainer Frimmel hanno cominciato a esplorare l’universo del circo e attraverso questo a farsi cantori di un’Italia fatta di strade provinciali e di persone che sanno di terra. Di film in film il loro sguardo si è precisato e il loro modo di raccontare arricchito.

Mister Universo rappresenta un passo avanti in quel percorso di contaminazione tra finzione e documentario. Ancora una volta la coppia dimostra una sensibilità unica nel cogliere i piccoli dettagli di questa vita itinerante e farne dei fantastici strumenti narrativi. Qui l’elemento scatenante è un pezzo di ferro, amuleto caro al giovane Tairo, domatore di bestie feroci, ma da lui perduto. Siamo dunque dalle parti di quella che si potrebbe chiamare superstizione e che il racconto mostra essere invece un attaccamento alla memoria che gli oggetti si portano appresso.

La ricerca del portafortuna conduce Tairo e la sua amica Wendy a due viaggi paralleli che, come nella tradizione di Griffith, hanno lo scopo di avvicinare emotivamente i due personaggi, svelandone il rapporto d’affetto. A metà strada tra romanzo di formazione e viaggio nel tempo, Mister Universo è ritmato da incontri carichi di quell’umanità che è cara ai registi: dalla scimmia che ha lavorato in Phenomena fino a lui, il Signor Universo. È un mondo che sembra emergere dalle nebbie dei ricordi e che porta Tairo a contatto con la sua infanzia. Questo è infatti il punto a cui tendono i film di Covi&Frimmel, quello stato d’innocenza perduta che il mondo del circo continua a incarnare. Ha la forza delle cose semplici Mister Universo – cose che poi tanto semplici non sono mai. Come un ferro piegato dall’uomo più forte del mondo.

The unnamed protagonist of Maud Alpi’s harrowing first feature, Gorge Cœur Ventre, has a temp job in one of these most unpleasant workplaces: abattoirs. His task is to shove the rebellious pigs and calves, too shaky from fear to stand and walk, towards their death.

Although his working tool is an electrified stick, his reflex is, sometimes, a caress. The boy is confused. His closest companion – and the film’s co-lead – is, after all, an animal. Hence an urge, albeit not fully

understood, for justification and apology to his faithful dog who, tied in a side alley, must hear all day the pleading screams of his four-legged peers. I have a plan, the boy tells the dog. Pile up enough workdays to be granted unemployment benefits and get the hell out of here. Things could be worse, he continues, if work was underground, without lights, while in the background the abattoir’s halogen lamps contrast with shadows to produce unhealthy chiaroscuros. The boy doesn’t quite get it, it seems, while his furry “best friend”, more in tune with both the world’s wonders and suffering, commands us to kneel to his height and remember how nature will flourish over man’s arrogant constructions, ultimately destined to ruin and silence.

And there are humans who think the world belongs to them.

Bedouins need to live it fully, it's their tradition yuri ancarani Dopo una serie di opere brevi proiettate in decine di festival internazionali – a partire dalla rivelazione con Il capo a Venezia nel 2010 – e presentate in musei, gallerie e biennali d’arte, per Yuri Ancarani la sfida del titolo (The Challenge) è anche quella di affrontare il suo lavoro produttivamente più ambizioso, e spingersi per la prima volta oltre la soglia dei 60 minuti. Oltre che eccellere in quella tensione formale tipica del suo sguardo, Ancarani è un maestro nelle sottili arti della diplomazia, della perseveranza e dell’infiltrazione, che gli hanno garantito accesso a luoghi che il suo stile svela con la potenza della prima volta, che siano le cave di marmo di Carrara, una camera iperbarica ad alta profondità, una sala operatoria robotizzata o uno spazio mediatico per eccellenza come lo stadio milanese di San Siro.

Questa volta il viaggio è stato più lungo – è iniziato con la surreale

foto dell’interno di un aereo di linea, svuotato dei sedili e affollato di rapaci e uomini in tunica e ghutra – e lo ha condotto in Qatar, dove eventi sportivi e grandi investimenti in arti e cultura servono a impressionare gli occidentali, ma dietro le quinte è la falconeria la passione dei dignitari. Anche questa volta quindi gli esseri umani sono dei comprimari, non più rispetto a luoghi, tecnologie e architetture che li eccedono, ma in confronto ai preziosi volatili (e a un altro indimenticabile coprotagonista animale che non sveleremo), presenze misteriose, quasi sacrali, refrattarie alla messa in scena, che rendono ancor più evidente l’ispirazione herzoghiana del lavoro di Ancarani, aggiornata al confronto con lo spettacolo di un nuovo soft power.

Un’opera da apprezzare, non solo dagli amanti dell’arte di Peter Handke.

Playing on the overlaying of two images inhabited by clouds, Ascent opens with a dreamy atmosphere to which the film holds tight like a precious legacy, because the challenge of making a film only out of stills depicting the world’s most celebrated mountain is no small thing. The photographs are balanced by the outline of a narration about an ascent of Mount Fuji.

Fiona Tan draws on a dual narration, by a Western “her” (the director herself) who sets the themes and a Japanese “him”, to whom she entrusts the memories of the climb.

The interplay between the resonances of the voices has illustrious precedents, which the director does not hide. But Hiroshima mon amour is just one of the many pieces that contributes to composing this fascinating mosaic, able to change aspect with the speed of a shutter click. Against the background of the snowy-white mountain peak flow the images of other “mountain films” and even the monster Godzilla. In reality nothing flows and everything stays still, even if just for a few fractions of a second.

It is precisely the journey in time that is the most fascinating thing about this project: the fragment captured forever by photography must reckon with a narrative that the editing renders fluid. The images advance one after the other like frames returned to their fixed-image status. And seeing the film go by one almost has the illusion of being able to rest one’s gaze on each of them.

La parola “bugie” sarebbe riduttiva per descrivere le falsificazioni su cui lavora il teatro di Marivaux.

L’amore è un traguardo che si raggiunge attraverso una teoria di indizi, che nella loro falsità (più o meno palese) rivela la profondità dei sentimenti di ciascuno in uno svelamento progressivo della complessità della psiche umana. Questo meccanismo, così lucido e metodico, è al centro della messa in scena di Les Fausses Confidences realizzata da Luc Bondy per il Théâtre de l’Odéon: sul palcoscenico Isabelle Huppert, Louis Garrel e Bulle Ogier per uno spettacolo che ha conquistato pubblico e critica. Uno degli ultimi a cui ha lavorato il celebre regista svizzero (prima di morire nel novembre 2015), che ha sempre amato varcare i confini tra teatro e cinema, cercando un modo per mantenere intatta la “parola” al cinema, con la consapevolezza delle potenzialità di due linguaggi differenti. Il film, che in parte testimonia dello spettacolo teatrale, è basato sull’intuizione di travalicare lo spazio scenico mantenendone la peculiare astrazione. Nel dispiegamento della trama amorosa tra la ricca vedova Araminte e il giovane di belle speranze Dorante si attraversano gli spazi del teatro, dalla hall fino ai camerini, passando per il palcoscenico e le terrazze, in un percorso che apre l’impeccabile esecuzione del testo allo sguardo mobile della macchina da presa. E se le prove che il manierato Garrel userà per irretire la fulgente Huppert hanno a che fare con l’immagine riprodotta (presunti ritratti segreti dell’amata), la verità sta invece nella parola, a testimonianza che Marivaux è un uomo di un altro tempo.

A Special Luc on Theatre There is a special bond in the relationship between actor and director on the stage. In this field, offered in a direct way to the audience, Luc Bondy was a master, a tireless creator of theatrical pieces, but also a writer and sometimes filmmaker. His adaptations of Cechov, Schnitzler, Handke, Ibsen, Beckett, Marivaux, Molière have marked the history of theatre, in a progressive growth of his ideal company on the International scene, formed by Michel Piccoli, Bulle Ogier, Jutta Lampe, Micha Lescot, Gert Voss, Bruno Ganz and Isabelle Huppert.

Bondy, born in Zurich in 1948 and son of Swiss journalist and actor François Bondy, grew professionally in Paris under the teachings of great pedagogue Jacques Lecoq. In 1969 he moved to Germany, first to Hamburg where he directed his first theatrical pieces, then to Frankfurt, where he joined the local Städtische Bühne, and finally, in 1985, when he took the direction of the Schaubühne in Berlin, following Peter Stein. His stagings were always supporterd

by Patrice Chéreau, who often invited Bondy in Nanterre since the Eighties, and the consecration in France arrived with the appointment in 2012 as director of the Théâtre de l’Odéon in Paris. And it’s in this European house of the performing arts that Bondy struggled until the very end with the disease that afflicted him for more than twenty years.

His last productions, filled with desire and passion, are the witnessing of the human depth which moved this great commentator of the present.

SUISA Prize Hat-Trick for Reiser The FONDATION SUISA has chosen once again the Festival del film Locarno for awarding a Swiss music composer with the Film Music Prize, which is worth CHF 25,000. This year the foundation for music promotion of the Cooperative Society of Music Authours and Publishers has selected Niki Reiser for his original music for the film Heidi (2015); the composer from Basel will receive the prize on Sunday, August 7 in Locarno.

Reiser did not tremble when he was asked to write music for Alain Gsponer’s movie, dedicated to the girl created by Johanna Spyri – one of the most iconic characters in Switzerland and over the world. In 2001 he had already scored Markus Imboden’s Heidi and he was aware of how important could be avoiding clichés that Swiss mountains and alpine locations can suggest. He ignored then Swiss melodiusness and chose to focus on the main character’s emotional sphere. According to the jury, it was the right choice because Reiser was able to transform the film into “a feast for the eyes and ears, touching people’s hearts”.

For Reiser this is the third Film Music Prize of FONDATION SUISA he earns, following the ones won for the scores of Kalt ist der Abendhauch (2001, directed by Rainer Kaufmann) and Das Blaue vom Himmel (2011, directed by Hans Steinbichler). An outstanding hat-trick.

When somebody is asking you what is your favorite movie of all time, you are always afraid that you could be judged (or blamed) from your choice. Picking up an ultra-rare arthouse film could make you presumptuous, while a classic movie can be a... classic and safe answer which could classify you as boring. But there are also exceptions, because there is nothing classical and boring in Gaspar Noé, in spite of his decision to elect Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey as his favorite. The Argentine auteur was invited at the Festival del film Locarno from Red Bull Music Academy (a global music institution committed to fostering creativity in music) for a conversation with its co-founder Torsten Schmidt. The event is going to take place at Spazio Cinema on Saturday 6 August at 1PM. Gaspar Noé (born in 1963) is one of the most daring filmmakers of his generation, but he is also known for having played several roles in the cinema industry: screenwriter, actor, cinematographer, writer, editor. It is difficult to find a position he has not yet covered from the Eighties until today. However, he became famous for directing short films (for example Carne in 1991 or Sodomites in 1998) and features in which he was director, writer, editor and producer at the same time: so it was for Seul contre tous (I Stand Alone, 1998, awarded at Cannes and Sarajevo Film Festivals), Irréversible (2002, starring Monica Bellucci and Vincent Cassel), Enter the Void (2009) and Love (2015). In them, he went all in – and he did not save anything, not being afraid to conduct a multisensorial siege on the audience or being judged for his brave (someone would say provocative) choices to show brutal fights and scandalous sex scenes. Love, life, death: the quintessence of mankind, showed to the bone.

As the Red Bull Music Academy stated, “Noé is reputed for flexing against cinematic boundaries with his undeniably intense style, and he gives equal credence to the power of moving images and music as mechanisms for emotional immersion”. It will be then interesting to check his point of view on psychedelia and the sound aspects in his movies, maybe asking him how much Kubrick’s movies influenced him. We are sure he is not going to give any banal answers.

Una vetrina unica per il territorio mattia bertoldi Stefano Rizzi, lei è a capo della Divisione dell’economia per il canton Ticino. Quanto è importante il settore della moda?

La moda è da considerare nella sua accezione più ampia di “metasettore”, che abbraccia anche settori trasversali come le tecnologie dell’informazione e della comunicazione (ICT). In questo senso, è stata inserita tra i quattro settori meglio equipaggiati per rispondere alle sfide future dell’economia cantonale, individuati dallo studio dell’istituto BAK di Basilea.

In che modo vi coordinate e collaborate con Ticinomoda (www.ticinomoda.ch)?

Ticinomoda è un attore rilevante, poiché riunisce le maggiori aziende del settore. Per promuovere l’innovazione in Ticino, si punta su un’ampia messa in rete e sulla collaborazione tra i vari attori economici, accademici e istituzionali: ciò

si concretizza all’interno del “sistema regionale dell’innovazione” (SRI).

Qual è il supporto che fornite a chi opera in questo settore come Cantone?

Anche le aziende della moda possono beneficiare degli strumenti e delle misure previste dallo SRI. Oltre al rafforzamento delle condizioni quadro, promosso nell’ambito del programma d’attuazione della politica economica regionale 2016-2019, le aziende che intendono sviluppare progetti innovativi trovano un adeguato sostegno grazie alla rinnovata Legge per l’innovazione economica.

Se potesse scegliere un attore al quale “rubare” lo stile, un abito o un accessorio, quale sarebbe?

anche le aziende attive in Ticino. Se penso allo stile del personaggio e ai “gadget” tecnologici, e spesso avveniristici, utilizzati da 007, non mi dispiacerebbe poter indossare un capo d’abbigliamento con qualche caratteristica innovativa.

Quanto è importante il Festival del film Locarno per rappresentare il Ticino (di riflesso, l’economia ticinese) in Svizzera e nel mondo?

Grandi eventi internazionali come il Festival del film Locarno sono una vetrina unica per il nostro territorio. Ricordo anche che l’Ufficio per lo sviluppo economico ha promosso la creazione della Film Commmission, un importante strumento di promozione e sostegno proprio nell’ambito dell’audiovisivo.

Lo sviluppo di tessuti intelligenti è un settore molto promettente, sul quale stanno puntando
