In the closing moments of a Festival it’s impossible to summarize in a single frame the flow of emotions that #locarno68 brought along. So what I am left to do is gather some of the images that have stayed in my memory, because of sheer impact power or surprise. Let me start with the evening when we handed the Pardo alla carriera to Marlen Khutsiev. He is there, under the Piazza Grande stage, with his 90 years of age, small, he moves with a cane. But, it just takes him climbing those few steps and get under the big screen, to show a vitality that could rival Edward Norton. Then, it’s that charge of empaty which in Locarno always activates towards new and significant works. The tribute that audience and critics have paid to Bella e perduta by Pietro Marcello, in the Concorso internazionale was exemplary and confirms the pride of having reached out to a film that will stand the test of time. The conversation with Michael Cimino at the Spazio Cinema (Forum) is also bound to stay in the Festival’s history books. A real show which – word after word – treasured anecdotes and reflections on cinema, triggered by
that first phrase: “Don’t ask about me, but about my experiences”. The tireless Cimino went on to talk for more than two hours with his audience, or anyone that would ask him a question. The generosity from a great artist here in Locarno often goes along with the generosity of the audience. The Japanese film Happy Hour is longer than five hours, but at the moment the credits started rolling, the audience got on their feet for a standing ovation paying hommage to the presence of its female cast. The power and beauty of Locarno is here: an audience that accepts challenges with an enthusiasm that doesn’t know defections, even when the length of a film extends over the general habits. That said, the prolonged cheer that Piazza Grande deserved to wizard of image and sound Walter Murch witnesses the desire and curiosity of our audience towards Cinema, which is definitely not superficial. And this is the reason why we welcome with convinction the suggestion that Murch launched in his acceptance speech, in Italian, to the audience in the Piazza: “Enjoy this small Heaven on Earth”.

KING HONG In your movie you explore the duality about fiction and reality, between characters and real life. Why did you choose to talk about this difference? I have done some films with this double structure before. Other people asked me why I use this one, I told them it’s because it’s useful to think about life more easily, because when you try to look at life in front of you, you have to go through a certain amount of ideals, ideology, some kind of conceptual models. And only going through them one believes he can understand what is in front of him. These comparing two methods represent a different process, just giving a person two concrete realities, two worlds one is forced to compare. You can think about life more directly, more basically. Personally I always live this duality, feeling guilty about switching from an ideal or an idea to the other one. We spend all our lives searching for our ideals. It’s a very long process, and sometimes I realize that maybe that’s not the way to look at life. I would like to see things more clearly and easily.

Your main character is a film director. How much of yourself you put on him?
Which has been for you the most emotional scene to shoot in this movie?
I cannot say how much of course, but I’m not afraid of putting details of my real life – as long I can use them with other kinds of details – mixing them in some kind of art. If I can use them I’m not afraid, even if I never meant to portray any model to myself. I like that kind of feeling when some stories have the flavor of their authors, and they are making some art: that’s what I’m trying to do. But how much I put of myself, I really don’t know.
I was very interested in the relationship between these two people, the man’s dilemma. He is married and he really loves this girl. I’m married and I felt I could live this problem one day, so while I was writing I was very emotionally attached to this dilemma. So I think the writing was emotional, I didn’t know how to develop and to end the story, it’s been a very interesting experience.
Do you think cinema has to keep showing the truth, the reality about human feelings and connections, just like you do with your movies? It’s very important I guess because it’s all we are interested in. We want to know always more about ourselves, about life and how to go through it. Nobody can really capture the essence of life. Nobody can say “I have found the essence, the definition of life.” Human beings are influenced by so many things that distract, we are not qualified to capture the essence of life. Everything we can do is discovering a little bit, and little by little.
After the Pardo d’Argento as best director for Our Sunhi in 2013, now the Pardo d’Oro for Jigeumeun matgo geuttaeneum teullida. What can you say about this prestigious award? I’m very happy about it. Getting a prize means a help for better exposure, or so I hope. Also it’s an encouragement to myself, for my steps and for my actors. Last question. You showed your movies in festivals like Cannes, Berlin, Rotterdam. In what Festival del film Locarno is unique for you? Unique? I guess look at me, I got two prizes here! That’s the important thing. C’è un’eleganza nobile in Avishai Sivan, che compone un cinema di immagini in bianco e nero, rumori all’apparenza cacofonici e invece infine sinfonici nella totalità del suo racconto, uomini e parole fuori schema, perché chiusi a chiave nella bigotta osservanza. Locarno questo film l’ha voluto (come cinque anni fa fece la Quinzaine), quasi preteso e poi premiato, rifiutando di entrare nell’elenco dei «no» che il regista pubblica sul suo sito. La sfida è chiara, fin da quel muso di mucca in primo piano all’inizio, da quei dialoghi frammentati, dall’assenza di colore che è innanzitutto esigenza narrativa, per infilarsi tra i Gur, setta chassidica di ebrei ultraortodossi, abituati, appunto, a dividere il mondo in bianco e nero. La lingua di questo cineasta è complessa e allo stesso tempo semplicissima, quello che nella struttura narrativa si allontana dalla linearità viene recuperato in un dialogo diretto con lo spettatore, come se HaimAaron, il protagonista, parlasse all’anima, alla pancia, agli occhi disorientati di chi guarda quel piccolo mondo antico. E nella sua prigione, lui, diventa un eroe malin-comico da cinema muto. Non è un ribelle, è solo libero. Ed è così, senza alcuna ideologia, che l’occhio nudo e acuto di un autore straordinario ci dice, sul cuore malato del mondo attuale, il Medioriente, più di quanto abbiano saputo fare altri. boris sollazzo

Miglior regia Almost fifteen years without a movie by Andrzej Zulawski. It was not fair, because the director of Possession (screened Fuori concorso in 1981 edition of Festival del film Locarno) has been one of the most interesting figure of European cinematography for at least two decades, since his outstanding debut The Third Part of the Night in 1971.

The Pardo conferred by the jury of the Concorso internazionale of Locarno68 is the best way to push this refined author not to wait too long to come back behind the camera. Cosmos is an existentialist thriller, a black comedy and above all a different way to represent the grotesque smallness of the human being, just like another great Polish
director named Roman Polanski did. Something that Zulawski explored in great movies such as La Femme publique, L’Amour braque and La Fidélité. A great mystery but that will probably remain unsolved and that we hope to investigate more, thanks to this outstanding film-maker. alessandro de simone

Killing time means filling a void, and filling a void in a movie is something that only a great actor can do. Because in Jigeumeun matgo geuttaeneun teullida Jung Jae-young had no chances to hide into crowded scenes or behind a massive music score – he had to face the camera armed only with words, gestures, gazes. The double structure of Hong Sangsoo’s movie was also a challenge, permitting him to compare to himself and to go even deeper, for example underlining minimal tone differences in the same dialogue. Right now, right then. His perfectly balanced performance seemed to be the only way to tell this story, a casual encounter which drives to several, possible consequences – as everybody of us perfectly knows, because that’s not only cinema. That’s life. Jung Jae-young let feelings flow across the audience and the Concorso internazionale jury, without any excess. His awards makes a combo with the Pardo d’oro given to the director for the movie. Another casual, well deserved encounter we are hoping will give soon birth to another movie. mattia bertoldi

“The narrative of Thithi is a manifestation of my own restlessness, and my constant search for connectivity in a disconnected world. And there is no need to have a great significance in it, but rather a playfulness which is more meaningful than all things serious.” This is what director Raam Reddy had to say about his first film, playfully underplaying the impact it might have on viewers. Critics responded warmly to it, with Italian journalist Francesco Boille (Internazionale.it) describing Thithi as “a tough and joyous film, like India” and saying that it leaves the audience with “the sadness of parting from these characters and the desire to see them again.” Feelings that appear to be shared by the jury of the Concorso Cineasti del presente, who decided to bestow the competition’s main prize, the Pardo d’oro Cineasti del presente – Premio Nescens, upon this small yet charming dramatic comedy, filmed entirely on location in the Indian state of Karnataka, with the dialogue spoken in the local Kannada dialect. max borg

Germania, fine degli anni Cinquanta. Il paese è diviso tra chi vuole semplicemente cercare il benessere e dimenticare gli orrori del passato, e chi invece vuole continuare la rielaborazione dei fatti accaduti e chiedere giustizia per i crimini perpetrati durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Tra gli ultimi c’è il procuratore Fritz Bauer (interpretato da un eccellente Burghart Klaußner), ossessionato dall’idea di ritrovare i tanti ufficiali nazisti scappati dalla Germania dopo la guerra, per riportarli in patria e processarli. La figura su cui si concentrano gli sforzi di Bauer è Adolf Eichmann, l’ufficiale delle SS che organizzò le deportazioni degli ebrei verso i campi di concentramento. Ricostruzione rigorosa di un periodo storico chiave per la storia europea, Der Staat gegen Fritz Bauer di Lars Kraume, affronta tematiche che non finiranno mai di affascinare lo spettatore. Raccontato e recitato con piglio deciso, si avvale, oltre a Klaußner, delle solide interpretazioni di Ronald Zehrfeld e Lilith Stangenberg. massimo benvegnù
