Pardo d’oro for a Master In awarding the Pardo d’oro to Jean-Claude Brisseau for his new film La Fille de nulle part, the jury of the 65th edition of the Festival del film Locarno, with Apichatpong Weerasethakul as its president, has made a decision to not only recompense one of the greatest living French filmmakers for his entire body of work but also to salute a feature film that is an exemplary gesture of cinematic freedom, beauty and courage. Like Tim Burton awarding him the Palme d’or at Cannes, Weerasethakul has demonstrated that a truly great filmmaker is able to recognise and appreciate the work of a fellow artist who has taken a completely different route from himself but still arrives as the same destination: cinema. Like the New Wave filmmakers before him, former teacher Brisseau was imbued with classical western culture derived from American cinephilia. The Thai director comes
from the world of contemporary art and interrogates the legends and history of his own country. There is no doubt an artisanal dimension and a particular mysticism (Marxist-Christian in the case of the French filmmaker, Buddhist in the case of the genius from Bangkok) that links the two men, despite their differences. Above all there is a tremendous belief in closely mingling ideas, sensations, feelings, and mise en scène. Among the messages of joy and amazement sent by admirers of Brisseau’s work on the announcement of the awards, there was one I found particularly fine. It came from a young French female director who was attending the festival for the first time: “So totally deserved. Cinema and talent win out. It’s fantastic because it cannot be easy being one of the last great ‘Hollywood’ filmmakers, inhabiting the lonely peaks”. Brisseau is no longer alone. He, alongside the other young filmmakers discovered at Locarno who believe cinema is still about courage and morality. Farewell.

With this new film, it looks like you wanted to go back to the roots, towards a low budget cinema which does not give up the courage of experimentation. I started again to shoot films with a small budget because I had the clear sensation that big productions could obstruct artistic freedom. So I decided to regain it, because I am convinced that it is possible to transmit emotions also with modest means at disposal. Afterwards, I can just say that I did not expect the film could be presented in a Festival. Being awarded such a prestigious prize is really a big surprise.
La Fille de nulle part wants to maintain a balance between philosophical cues, comical or (at least) poetical moments like the ones which have a connection with the arts. But I repeat, I was interested in the mix between different elements. Elements that (maybe) find a common point in the reflections on life’s illusions? This is of course one of the main themes of the film, as demonstrated by the main character (the old math professor) who is busy writing a book about life’s illusions that imprisoned him, from politics to religion to daily life, because after all –
Jean-Claude Brisseau 5 questions to He is one of the French cinema masters, but he surprised everybody with one of the most experimental films watched in Locarno. Thanks to the selfproduced La Fille de nulle part where he plays the main role, he was awarded Pardo d’oro 2012.
Your movie is able to mark theoretical, moral and aesthetical reflections without never stopping focusing on emotions... I have never liked to underline my intentions about the core of my films. Neither the technical, nor the narrative and philosophical ones. I wanted to mix elements exactly like I did with the few people I worked with on the set. After all, I was interested in keeping that intimacy and transmitting it to the audience. The intimacy, which marks the encounter between the man and the woman in the film, is haunted by ghosts, a surprising incursion to paranormal. I tried to find the right mix between daily life objects and a fantastic world that progressively comes into the film, but without transforming it into a fantasy work tout court.
as happens in some film scenes – when illusions fall, it is possible to come to craziness or to dramatic results. And, as it ofthen happens in your filmography, on the one hand there is a taste for romanesque while on the other hand there is an autobiographical mark, even if it is developed and hidden by the mise en scène. I can just write about things correlated to my personal life, then I mix them with imaginary elements. I wanted to reach a vast and simple audience, not only the élite. Making something difficult to put on a scene, but trying to hide this difficulty at the same time. (Lorenzo Buccella)

The winner is: Elisabeth Flory, CH – 6004 Luzern

This week I joined about 8,000 other people at a free outdoor screening (…) in the famed Piazza Grande. The projection (and even the sound) in Piazza Grande were the best I’ve ever seen at an outdoor event and of course the setting itself is lovely (…). What’s most magical about the Piazza Grande is experiencing a film with that many strangers simultaneously. (…) Of course it’s impractical for industry attendees at festivals to always go to public screenings, but seeing one once in a while can be a strong reminder of what’s at the heart of this industry – witnessing a film connect with an audience.

A Bellyful of Sports thanks to Top Events of Switzerland The 2012 Olympic Games offered a special program of competitions all along the Festival del film Locarno, but the sport season does not end tomorrow with the closing ceremony in London: thanks to Top Events of Switzerland (TEOS) – the association which collects the eight best events across the country, including our kermesse – it will be possible to live the same emotions also in the next months. For example, the Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt (five-time Olympic gold medalist) will be challenged once again by Yohan Blake at the Weltklasse Zurich, scheduled on August 30th.
The golf tournament Omega European Masters in Crans-Montana (August 30th-September 2nd), instead, is a tasty appetizer of the sport which will be included in the 2016 Olympics program in Rio. And if you fell in love with horseriding because of the gold medal earned by the Swiss equestrian Steve Guerdat, you might be interested in the White Turf horse race in St. Moritz (February 2013). And finally, winter sports are well represented by the Ski World Cup in Wengen (January 2013).
