From the Editor We are going to be the voice of Turkish business people… Dear readers, We are glad to meet you on these fine sunny days, especially after a long and harsh winter. The Turkish community in the UK is not only successful at cultural integration, but also plays a very important role in the business world. We set out to better promote this dynamic community and to build an economic bridge between Turkey and the UK These are the reasons why we put all our enthusiasm and effort into making this first issue of our magazine. Why do we publish? “Turkish British” will keep you up to date with business news and tell the success (and sometimes failure) stories of entrepreneurs in this country. The Turkish - speaking community in the UK, is now more than 400.000 strong, is not only. We can confidently say that especially in the last 10 years, a lot of entrepreneurs specialising in a variety of jobs have settled here via the Ankara Agreement or entrepreneur visa. We, as the publishers of Turkish British magazine, came to the UK as entrepreneurs as well. Therefore, we would like to share our ideas, experience and know-how on how to create economic value in this country. Brexit will affect Turkish business people as well Dispute and uncertainty over Brexit has affected the economic activities in the UK and will have both positive and negative effects on Turkish companies and entrepreneurs. Most important of which will be the annulment of ECAA Ankara Agreement. It’s been in effect since 1964 and it is a quite in-demand visa category. However, we believe that creating effective networks between Turkish and British business people would, at least, minimise the negative impacts of Brexit. As “Turkish British”, our aim is to help the Turkish speaking community, non-profit organisations and business people create new networks and support their promotional activities. Our another goal is to solidify the economic bridge between Turkey and the UK, thereby creating new markets for the business people in both countries. “Turkish British” will be published on a one-month-Turkish, onemonth-English basis, making in total 6 issues printed in Turkish and 6 issues in English annually. We most certainly would appreciate your invaluable feedback on both the desing and content of our new magazine. Yours sincerely, Ayla Torun, PhD

WELCOME

The New Business and Lifestyle Magazine of the Turkish-Speaking Community “ It is high time to initiate such a publication” said Fevzi Kemal Torun, the editorin-chief of “Turkish British” magazine. According to Torun, their aim is to make the Turkish speaking community in Britain more visible. “Turkish British” magazine is being published by Afis Communication, a company who’s been working in Turkey for a long time in the fields of corporate publishing and advertisement. Afis Communication opened their London office two years ago. The magazine’s audience is mainly the Turkish speaking community and the other communities that they have been integrated with. The editor-in-chief of “Turkish British” and the head of the agency Afis Communication, Fevzi Kemal Torun summarizes their goal as ““We want to share our community’s lives, who have made extraordinary efforts to integrate themselves to UK economically. We want to contribute to the economical and cultural relations between two communities.” Both digital and conventional media is very strong in UK, according to Torun. Other communities in UK are also publishing magazines and newspapers to reach their own fellow countrymen. Now, the Turkish speaking community is making significant contributions to British economy. “But, it is quite striking that our community has no media platform with which to express themselves. The Turkish speaking community needs a platform to share their success, a platform that is followed by both Turkish and English speaking communities. “And now, we decided to fill that void” says Torun. Torun specifically underlines that Turkish British magazine will be objective and fair to all communities and all points of view, and will continue publishing as an independent magazine.

Inter-communal Integration Must Continue in the Media as well The UK is one of the biggest economies in the world. It receives a massive amount of immigration and is one of 6

the most cosmopolitan countries of the world, according to Torun. Immigrants contribute socially and economically, with their entrepreneurship and investments, as they integrate themselves with the English and other communities in the UK.

TB Magazine will be covering current news from Turkey, from the UK and all around the world; special interviews from different sectors and life style news...

One of the most active and the driven group among these communities is Turkish speaking community, according to Torun, as he explains why they decided to publish “Turkish British”: There are 400.000 Turkish speaking people in the UK has a population of almost 70 million. There is a community who made a place for themselves in the business world. Our people have been coming here for various reasons since 1970. In the last 10 years, a considerable

TurkishBritish number of entrepreneurs came to the UK’s under the Ankara Agreement and investor visas. Their investments and the companies they’ve built have made a great contribution to UK’s economy and they’ve made great strides in integrating with other communities. They make successful business connections and still continue to grow with newcomers. We think that this community needs a national media outlet. Integration must continue on media as well. The work we’ve done, the network we’ve built and the connections we made as Afiş İletişim, led us to believe that this is the right place and the right time to start publishing our magazine, a representation Turkish speaking community!

Turkish British will Serve as a Venue for International Entrepreneurship Turkish British’s aim is to build a bridge between entrepreneurs and companies of Turkey and the UK. The magazine contains articles about current topics, news of the economy, exclusive interviews from different industries, promotion of historical and touristic sites, health, education, news of cultural and artistic value, start up companies and food industry. Using our vast distribution network, the magazine will be delivered to recognized businesses and entities of both the UK and Turkey’s economies, free of charge. Turkish British will be available our magazine’s website and online magazine platforms online, and in print.

Victims of the promising Ankara Agreement is in search of rights

An arduous road from Turkey to the UK!

The Home Office’s recent changes regarding obtaining indefinite leave to remain (ILR) or permanent residency via Turkish Businessperson visa (aka Ankara Agreement) aggravated the situation for thousands of Turkish people living in the UK. Ankara Agreement provides Turkish citizens with the rights to establish a business, work and reside in the UK. When the amendments made in the 15th of June 2018 began to be retrospectively implemented, the grievances have increased; and a legal process was initiated with the participation of thousands of volunteers. Although the outcome of the first case resulted in disappointment for the Turkish community, the legal struggle is not over yet. Non-practising barrister and solicitor Yaşar Doğan from Redstone Solicitors explains the amendments in question:

S

ince coming into effect in 1963, the Ankara Agreement has been a hope for those who have moved from Turkey to the UK. Thousands of Turkish citizens have made investments and started new lives in the UK by obtaining the Ankara Agreement visa. However, some changes have been made in the conditions of application and citizenship processes within the last year. Even worse for the Turkish citizens, those changes were also requested to be implemented retrospectively. The new regulation has created serious grievances for those who began benefiting from this visa type before 16 March 2018. The signatures have been collected for a petition campaign, and the amendments have been appealed and sued. Although the outcome of the first proceeding came as a disappointment for those who are at risk of losing their acquired right, it is not a lost cause yet. The appeal process is now underway. So, what are the demands of the Turkish citizens who have already moved to the UK to run a business? What will happen next? We ask the experts of the subject and the followers of this painful process…

16

“Turkish citizens who want to start a new business in the UK were normally able to apply for indefinite leave to remain after having 1 year and then 3 years of limited leave to remain. They could also bring their supposes and children. The Home Office has changed the rules and stipulated that the supposes must have lived in the UK for at least 2 years. This amendment has not been put into practice for a while. Once it suddenly began to be implemented, many people’s applications have been rejected. One of the people whose application was rejected is Hacer Aydoğdu. In collaboration with other complainant families, the Aydoğdu family has sued the Home Office. It was claimed that the amendment contradicts the articles of the Ankara Agreement. Among many other cases, Hacer Aydoğdu case was chosen as the leading one.”

The conditions of the Ankara Agreement changed by a sudden decision Hacer Aydoğdu has become the symbol of the legal struggle, which has been growingly continuing for nearly one year. Doğan highlights that despite not being relevant to the matter in dispute, the judge has ruled against the ILR rights of not only the spouses but also Turkish citizens. Doğan further points out that the family was unable to appeal against the decision due to financial difficulties. Following this decision, applications for ILR have also been suspended. After a while, applications were restarted without any changes. However, with a sudden decision taken on 16 March 2018, Ankara Agreement visa holders’ right of ILR has been suspended. Then, on the 16th of June 2018, a guideline was issued to revise the right of ILR. With the new regulations issued in this guideline,

TurkishBritish the duration of residence has been increased to 5 years, the language and culture test became compulsory, and an application fee of £2389 for each family member was put into practice. Additionally, it was announced that the amendments will be retrospectively applied to those who have already made applications before 16 March 2018 and run their business in the UK in accordance with this type of visa.

The matter in dispute...

Yaşar Doğan from Redstone Solicitors states: “This has created many grievances. The retrospective application of these amendments is evidently unjust.” He further explains the process happened thereafter as follows: “Turkish businessperson, led by Leni Candan, have formed the ‘Turkish Businessperson Association’. I have also voluntarily accepted to be a solicitor. We first sent a ‘letter before action’. As we were unable to get the result we wanted, we appealed to the High Court of Justice in UK. We claimed that the decision for the Aydoğdu family case is legally wrong and is inconsistent with the previous decisions of the European Court of Justice. The amendments also have contradicted the legitimate expectations of those benefiting from this specific visa. Our case took place on the 7th of March 2019 in the High Court. The judge postponed the decision due to the difficulties in the legal arguments of the case. On 18 March 2019, the High Court announced its decision.”

• Turkish business people who have made their applications for obtaining the Ankara Agreement visa before 16 March 2018 have a legitimate expectation that they will be granted ILR in the UK by being considered under the old articles of the agreement (ie obtaining ILR at the end of four years without being subjected to language and citizenship test and without having to pay an application fee).

“The retrospective implementation of amendments is unnecessary, unjust, and disproportionate” The High Court has ruled that the expectations held by the Ankara Agreement visa holders that they will not be affected by the amendments are legitimate; that the legitimate expectations have been violated by the Home Office; and that have caused legitimate grievances. However, it was also decided that the amendments are legitimate and balanced with the public interest. Solicitor Doğan asserts that the decision was disappointing. He also specifies that although the judge’s decision admitted that the recent amendments have caused legitimate grievance, it was decided that the grievances were not grave enough compared to the public interest. Doğan comments on the decision: “Had the amendments not affected the Turkish Businessperson visa holders already living in the UK, it could then have been possible to agree with the judge. Following the changes, new Turkish applicants would know the updated visa requirements. The retrospective implementation of the changes to those already living in here cannot be seen as proportionate and legitimate. The Home Office can, of course, change immigra-

Non-practising barrister and solicitor advocate Yaşar Doğan enumerates the matter in dispute as follows:

• Home Office violated the above-mentioned legitimate expectation by making changes to the rules, introducing new requirements and applying these changes retrospectively. • As a result of the violation of this legitimate expectation, people affected by this situation were exposed to unjust treatment and sufferings. • Considering this unjust treatment, the Home Office’s attitude to Ankara Agreement visa holders is ‘disproportionate’ and should be considered as ‘malpractice’ in a democratic system. The verdict of the court: • The expectations of the claimant group that they will not be affected by the recent amendments to Ankara Agreement (ie obtaining ILR at the end of four years without being subjected to language and citizenship test and without having to pay an application fee) are justified and legitimate. • The Home Office violated this legitimate expectation with the amendments made on March 16, 2018. • As a result of this violation, the members of the claimant group suffered unjust treatment. • However, as the Home Office’s reason for making the amendments outweighs the claimants’ grievances, the amendments are legitimate and proportional to the public interest. For this reason, the immigration policy changes cannot be considered as ‘malpractice’ (Effectively managing the immigration system while trying not to make Turkish business people suffer the consequences of the amendments). 17

uuu tion rules. However, to be able to apply the changes retrospectively, there must be a very serious reason. An abstract reason such as the administration of the immigration system cannot justify this on its own. I also think it contradicts the decisions of the European Court of Justice. Even if it is in accordance with these decisions, the retrospective implementation is unnecessary, unjust, and disproportionate. We believe that the decision of the High Court is faulty. Therefore, we have decided to appeal these decisions.” By the impact of the Aydoğdu case, the barristers of the case are set to lodge an appeal in order to remedy this injustice against Ankara Agreement visa holders. To be able to carry out this litigation process, the Turkish Businessperson Association, founded under the leadership of Leni Candan, has collected a donation of nearly £100,000. The process seems quite long and complicated… Especially the Turkish speaking community in the UK is now awaiting curiously what will happen next.

Ankara Agreement signed with the EU, not the UK

Ankara Agreement, which is the underlying cause of all this chaos, may be abolished after Brexit.

Founder of the Alliance of Turkish Business People Leni Candan: “We will pursue the case to

the end!”

Leni Candan, who initiated a petition and donation campaign to file a lawsuit following the Aydoğdu case, evaluates the court’s verdict as follows: “We are very disappointed by the verdict. Despite the judge’s conceding that the Home Office’s policy changes breached our legitimate expectations and that the Home Office violated these expectations; it is quite upsetting for us to see that the challenges faced by Turkish business people and their families as a result of these changes have not been deemed ‘unfair enough’. But we continue to believe that we are right. The acknowledgement of the High Court that there has been a violation of our legitimate expectations also suggests that we should pursue this case to the end. We already appealed to the Supreme Court. The general view of the supporters of the case is to continue our legal struggle to the end.” 18

Ayşegül Yeşildağlar, former Turkish attaché for labour and social security in London, summarises the history of Ankara Agreement as follows: “Ankara Agreement is in fact refers to the European Community Association Agreement (ECAA) signed between the then European Economic Community (EEC) and Turkey to initiate Turkey’s EU membership process in 1963. However, it is used in the United Kingdom to mention the visas and the right of free movement granted to Turkish citizens. Yeşildağlar continues: “It is an agreement not only incorporating people’s free movement rights, but also all arrangements related to the former EEC membership. For example; the EU Customs Union, to which Turkey is a party as well, is a part of this agreement. As opposed to popular belief, the Ankara Agreement is not a special agreement signed between the UK and Turkey but instead, between Turkey and the EU. Therefore, even if the UK leaves the EU, the agreement will still be valid in other member states.”

Ankara Agreement has also seen some improvements Commenting on the recent changes in the Home Office’s policy guides, Yeşildağlar also reminded the improvements to the agreement achieved in the past years. Despite the amendments made to the detriment of Turkish business people in the UK, we should remind ourselves the major improvements made in the conditions of Ankara Ag-

reement as well, she says. For instance, while it was taking 10 years to obtain ILR for those applicants in the Turkish worker visa category, it now takes only 5 years, she added.

“For the Turkish society, it is not just a legal struggle but a struggle for existence”… “Turkish state representatives did not participate in the discussions and have not been a party to our legal struggle thus far. However, the Turkish community in the UK, for the first time, came together and started a struggle to defend their legal rights against the restrictions imposed following the Aydoğdu case” said Yeşildağlar. Emphasising the role of the flow of highlyskilled Turkish immigrants to the UK in recent years, she goes on explaining the process after the court’s decision: “This community came together and collected £100,000 to fund their legal struggle. I think even if the appeal process is settled against the Turkish complainants, seeing our community taking such an initiative for the first time without the help and support of the Republic of Turkey is a promising progress in itself.”u

A Deadlock; Brexit If Britain leaves the EU without an agreement, the trade balance between Britain and Turkey can be harmed. According to the report; in case of a hard Brexit, Turkey’s income from export will decrease 2.4 billion dollar and ,after South Korea and Pakistan, Turkey will become the third country that will be affected most adversely.

E

Turkey will lose an export market worth billions of dollars

U leaders and UK agreed on the delay of Brexit until 31st October 2019. There are lots of different scenarios in Britain on what will happen next and the situation changes everyday. Even though Turkey is not a member state, the trade relations between the two countries are expected to be affected significantly. We asked the authorities about the possible scenarios;

How will Turkey be affected if a no-deal Brexit takes place? In case of a no-deal Brexit (Hard Brexit), the situation will have negative effects on Turkey in terms of economic issues and commercial relations. If Britain exits the EU without a deal Turkey may face an annual decrease on exports of $2.4 billion. The duration demanded for Brexit, meaning the separation of the United Kingdom from the European Union has expired. However, London requested another two periods of retardation and 31st October, 2019 is agreed on as the last Brexit date. If Britain cannot reach a consensus with the EU and is excluded from the Customs Union in commercial terms within this period, Turkey is expected to lose its second largest export market for a long period of time. The automotive and textile sectors are among the ones which will highly be affected and this will most probably put the business sector in a risky situation in terms of economical loss. Every year, 170 thousand automobiles produced in Turkey, are sold to the UK. The overall number on the annual export in textile and clothes is above 2 billion dollars. 20

May’s resigned in the past days and she’s leaving prime minister on June 7.

According to a report by the United Nations (UN), in the advent of harsh Brexit, Turkey will be the third most badly-affected non-EU country following South Korea and Pakistan, suffering an annual loss of $2.4 billion in terms of exports. Turkey which continues to be in agreement with the EU regarding the Customs Union will not be able to issue a special treaty of commerce unless the EU and the UK come to a trade agreement between each other. In this case, until there is a trade agreement between the EU and the UK, Turkey and the UK will have to apply customs tariffs on mutual trade, which means bad news for the trade volume that has reached to 18.6 billion dollars in 2018. Both countries will lose free access to each other’s market. The prices of British products in Turkey and Turkish products in UK will increase and the competitive capacity will regress.

EDF: Both countries should prepare contingency plans According to the General Secretary of Economic Development Foundation Çiğdem Nas who spoke to Reuters, both countries should prepare precaution plans in order to overcome this issue before the stated date. Nas stated that “For instance, companies may stock their products renting warehouses in the other country for a limited time in order to handle the situation. Thus, this is not a permanent solution. In case of a harsh Brexit, it will be very difficult to change the current commercial net.”

Turkey is the 19th biggest trade partner of the Britain However, the trade relations between the two countries can be developed in the post-Brexit era when the UK will lose its member state status. According to HMRC, Turkey is the 19th biggest trade partner of the UK. In respect of Turkey’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ data, the trade volume between UK and Turkey reached 18,6 billion dollars in 2018 and there are more than 3,000 British companies operating in Turkey.

According to the report published by the UK’s Department of International Trade, there is not enough time to sign continuity trade agreements before Brexit’s due date. If it were to happen, the agreements would prevent possible trade disruptions between the UK and a number of countries including Turkey, Japan, Morocco, San Marino and Andorra. The report says that; “The best way to avoid the trade cuts is to exit the EU with an agreement. This will help to protect the trade relations with the EU and existing trade relations with other countries within the EU agreement.”. It is recorded that, the Ministry continues to debate about the trade regularity after Brexit. The UK is expected to go through a busy period as the details of the Brexit agreement needingto be discussed until a new meeting date is set with the EU leaders. u

K

ebab might be the most famous taste of Turkish cuisine… Wherever you go on this planet, you can find a kebab restaurant or a kebab “fanatic” looking for a good kebab to eat. And they are in demand, which says a lot about Turkish cuisine’s effect on English food culture, its contribution to UKs economy and its effect on daily life. It’s not just kebab though. You can find many types of food, appetisers, desserts and pastries from Turkish cuisine in UK that has made a place for itself in food culture and economy here. TurkishBritish The awards were handed to the winners in a night of celebration, in attendance of politicians, celebrities, journalists and most importantly the restaurant workers of this country, who work hard every day with devotion.

Many Thanks to Thousands of Workers in Kebab Industry British Kebab Awards aims to promote the restaurants, suppliers and workers of kebab industry and show how much they contribute to UK both culturally and economically. According to Ibrahim Dogus, Director of CEFTUS and the founder of British Kebab Awards, these awards increase people’s desire for kebab and help kebab spread even more in UK. He specifically pointed out the unceasing efforts and passion of industry’s workers. “ We tried to measure the extent of the market while we were analyzing the economic and social effects of the industry on UK. The aim of this award is to proudly show and approve the best of kebab industry; local producers, restaurants, chiefs, shops and takeaway businesses from all corners of the UK ” said Dogus.

Jeremy Corbyn, the leader of Labour Party and a vegetarian, said “ It’s strange really. As one who choses not to eat meat and chooses not to drink… I love kebab shops. I love what they do! I like that they have Falafel in their shops” during his speech while presenting British Kebab Awards.

He continued “ We are grateful for unsung heroes, who work hard every day in restaurants and in takeaway businesses. What’s more is, we give people the chance to say that they have the best kebab restaurant, with certainty. Wherever they are, our local restaurants and kebab take-aways are the hearts of their main street. More and more kebab restaurants are becoming a part of our lives. People’s perception of kebab has changed as well. Once it was thought as a unhealthy food for midnight snacking, now it is being sold and consumed in many different forms.” After the awards ceremony, Prime Minister Theresa May and many UK MPs pointed out the contribution on kebab industry to UK’s economy and congratulated award winning firms and sponsors of the organisation.u

First he succeeded, Now he’s raising a successful generation! With his TAS Restaurant chain opening in 23 different locations, Önder Şahan also obtained success in the educational front by opening Docklands Academy in 2011. Şahan, who is now exitedly pursuing a project to transform a historic library into a boutique hotel, recommends that entrepreneurs continue having visions, to never detract from what is right, and to always remain determined. And also, to listen to lots of good Turkish folk music… Şahan’s experiences in the last 30 years are enough to fill a book. In summary, though, his story begins as a factory worker responsible for ironing. Later on, he worked as a dishwasher and breakfast chef at an English café. Rising through the ranks from waiter to manager, Şahan found himself opening TAS’s first restaurant in Waterloo. Şahan describes his subsequent experiences as follows:

Ö

nder Şahan was born in Kars, one of Turkey’s easternmost cities near the border with Armenia. This city, which is known for its Russian architecture stemming from the Russian occupation in the 1900s, its world-famous skiing resorts and its ice-covered Çıldır Lake, was home to his youth and upbringing. He later moved to Ankara with his family and studied Administration for 2 years. At the age of 24, he arrived in London. Arriving 30 years ago with only enough money for travel, Şahan is now a successful entrepreneur and founder of the TAS Restaurant chain. In his own words, he describes himself as “a parent of 2 daughters. I speak very good Turkish and try to articulate myself as best as I can. I understand several humanist languages throughout the world. I listen to a lot of Turkish folk music. I like it a lot and consider them my friends.”

“As we continued opening more restaurants and more cafes one by one, we eventually found ourselves owning 23 restaurants, cafes and bars. Additionally, we opened our wholesale depo. At the moment, all of our products besides meat and milk come from Turkey. We also produce water, organic juices and wines under our own TAS brand and sell them at our stores.”

We are raising bright generations at Docklands Academy Having established the TAS brand with continuous growth in the culinary sector, Şahan has also continued to make successful investments in different sectors. He explains, “We have an education facility, approved by the British Council and the British Accreditation Centre, which offers higher education according to British standards. This summer, we are also going to bring to life our boutique hotel, which we have transformed from a historical library. We are very excited.” Docklands Academy, opened in London by Önder Şahan, provides higher education courses. Formed

TurkishBritish in 2011, the Academy also provides professional English, general English, IELTS and Cambridge exam peparaton courses, alongside modules in Tourism, Hotel Administration, Gastronomy, Culinary Arts and Business Administration. “Education is the best way to impart what someone has learned throughout their life to the next generation,” says Şahan, who continues “It is important for me to have a stake in this sector and contribute to this in some way. Education is the most effective way of doing so. We opened our educational institution to provide a service and raise bright generations, without having any profit motive.” Şahan, who considers education to be of great importance, has also opened a 5-classroom primary school in the village of Güllüce in his hometown of Kars (named Önder Şahan Primary School) and transferred it to the Ministry of National Education.

Have you ever stayed at a historic library? Önder Şahan’s current excitement derives from his boutique hotel project, which is fast nearing completion. But don’t picture a normal hotel – the project is based on transforming a historic library. Önder Şahan explains the project as follows. “We are transforming a historic hotel into an 80-room boutique hotel. We are going to move our gastronomy kitchen there. We are aiming for it to be one of the most renowned hotels in its form. Besides the hotel menu, we will also be serving our guests specialities from Kars. Additionally, for special meetings, we will have a private hall and bar, as well as a Turkish Bath and spa.”

The fundamental requirement for success is having a vision Explaining that he managed to realise his dreams one by one, Şahan says, “we believed together with valued friends that TAS would lead to great dreams and stories. As long as the world turns and we are able to serve our food, water and soup to our lovely guests, we will continue realising our dreams.” However, having dreams is not enough to be successful on its own. Şahan, who is an internationally recognised successful entrepreneur, says that in order to be a successful entrepreneur,

one must first be a successful person. He explains the required next steps as follows, “With patience and knowledge, experience and skills in the relevant sector, I believe you can fulfil your dreams successfully. As I said, patience is of fundamental importance. At the same time, one must not be stubborn but determined. My advice to young entrepreneurs is to stay smiling, to keep both joy and their wellbeing in their hearts, and listen to lots and lots of Turkish folk music. They must be aware that everything is based on life, and there is nothing more important.

I contributed to the region I immigrated to Completing his 30th year in London and having survived some tough circumstances when he first arrived, Şahan says that another key to success is to always look correctly at the future. When we asked him if he ever thought of returning to Turkey, Şahan answered, “I never needed to return to contribute to the geography I find myself in. Especially due to the opportunities I found here, I think I am much more useful here than back in Turkey.”

Investment and philanthropy at the same time Önder Şahan doesn’t just contribute through his investments but also his social support initiatives. “For the last 20 years, the TAS Restaurant Group has prided in itself for contributing to the community and fulfilling our duties, from Southwark to Westminster,” says Şahan, who continues, “being part of the community and helping local support initiatives of non-profit organisations has always been a big value of ours. This has never changed.” Şahan summarises his social support initiatives as follows. “As the TAS Restaurant Group since 2016, we have been working in partnership with Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) to give help to sick children and their families. To facilitate this, we have established the Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity. We also routinely visit the hospital. By purchasing our items, our customers are also indirectly donating to the hospital. Our special fundraising activities and campaign events are also continuing.”

Segmentify proves its success with 200 worldwide customers Segmentify, which was formed in 2015, currently has 30 customers in the UK and 200 customers worldwide. Having been identified as one of the 25 pioneers in the machine learning sector last year, Segmentify is continuing to develop while leaving its competitors behind.

E

-commerce is now embedded in all our lives. We all now do shopping over the internet at varying levels. While we browse online, these sites try to show us product advertisements it thinks would be of interest. So if you’re asking how these sites know who you are or what you like, you can find the answer with Segmentify founder Murat Sosyal. Sosyal explains how sites know their customers. “We provide e-commerce sites with machine learning algorithms that can be used to know their customers and make their shopping experience personal. The advertised product is based on the past browsing activities of the customer, which allows the selection of the advertisement to be tailored and the profit of the site to increase.” An alumni of the Middle East Technical University Electricity and Electronic Engineering Department, Sosyal has conducted scientific experiments over machine learning in web and information securities for many years. He also served as project manager for several international projects. Having formed Segmentify in 2015, Sosyal began investing in the UK in 2018. In the first half of that year, Sosyal was initially travelling in and out of the country. However, having seen the potential for how his product fits the industry during his partnership with the London Bridge Project (LBP), Sosyal moved permanently to London to oversee the expansion of the project across London. His customer base grew twice the size. 30

The UK market is the most welcoming for us

“For many years I managed projects with multinational teams. This is why I feel more comfortable that our current UK team employs two British, one French and one Turkish associate. However, the difficulty of forming a joint culture cannot be denied”.

With respect to Soysal’s experiences in Turkey, he is at an advantage compared to many people who invest in the UK. “We had tried many methods to create a brand value in the e-commerce market, where we had no network, while in 3 years delivering to 100 customers found in the Istanbul market,” says Sosyal. He notes that, “In the past 8 months we are applying similar methods in London” and comments on UK’s market in the following way, “Of course, selling, arranging meetings and explaining yourself is difficult for an unknown brand. However we are a team who have such experiences previously in Dubai, Berlin and Paris. In terms of peaking professionalism at work, UK has greeted us the best, matching our expectations the closest with regards to speed. If you have a ready-made product of good quality, the high level of competition here becomes an advantage - especially in London, a global city. People from diverse and cultures live and work here. This is an advantage for firms coming in from abroad.”

AgeCare Medical Cosmetic and Aesthetic Clinic We’ve clearly proven our success

Referring to the large competition in the UK, Berlin, Paris, and other firms based in the U.S., Sosyal says, “the sector which we’re in is very competitive. Segmentify’s biggest advantage is the proven power of algorithms. Today we have around 30 clients in the UK, and 200 clients throughout the world. We gained almost all of these through entering EU tests alongside our rivals and earning more endorsements at the end. By being recognised as one of the 25 companies at the forefront of machine learning, we have also in a way proven the quality of our algorithm.”

“For us, the most important aim is to establish our brand quality in the UK and to generate some large-scale clients to obtain some social proof in response to the question “Who do you work with?”,” says Sosyal, who continues, “This is obviously not that easy of a process. No matter how high quality your product is, it is not easy to guarantee this in a new sector. But thanks to our UK team’s correct aims and good managing of our sales process – in particular in our fair sales - we have landed clients such as Virgin and Mothercare.” To entrepreneurs who are seeking to invest in the UK, Sosyal advises, “It is important to enter the sector with a finished and highquality product. After that, the first investment must be to bring on board a British salesman who has expertise about the target sector and the target customer base. Additionally, without the necessary sales and marketing budget, you will likely witness a loss of money, time and opportunities. The sales team must always be supported by marketing that is applicable to the target sector.” 31

UK-to-world sales operation management

The key to success in international sales operations: LBP Turkey, Romania, South Africa and Ukraine - managing sales operations for more than 20 companies in the UK, the volume of the incentives obtained by London Bridge Project for Turkish customers in the UK market reached £800k.

LBP; in 9 cities across 3 countries

Kemal Sidar has been working with a number of leaders in the innovative industrial and software companies for over 12 years with Etkin Proje, which he founded in 2007. He has played a role in the international expansion of these companies. London Bridge Project (LBP) emerged in 2017 as a result of the success and confidence in these efforts. Today, Sidar points out that LBP has made significant progress towards becoming a successful brand in sales management. London Bridge Project, whose main activity area is sales and sales operations management services, as told by Kemal Sidar: “You can think of LBP as the outsource sales department of its customers. Therefore, we operate these activities on behalf of our clients in the same way as a company’s sales department would. Our aim is to become the largest enterprise sales management company in the UK and then to start international operations; reach the point where we can provide sales management services not only for the UK market but also for all major markets”. 32

LBP is currently managing sales operations for more than 20 clients in the UK from countries such as Turkey, Romania, South Africa and Ukraine.

Carrying on explaining LBP, Sidar says they have a team of 12 with UK sales culture and sales experience. LBP operates in 3 different cities: one central London head quarters and one operational office in Maidenhead and a regional representative in Cardiff. “We have more than 60 qualified employees and offices in 9 different cities across 3 different companies with our sister company Etkin Proje. Currently we manage the UK sales operations for more than 20 clients from countries such as Turkey, Romania, South Africa and Ukraine. The magnitude of the incentives for our Turkish customers, which we manage only for the UK market, has reached £ 800,000”.

TurkishBritish The secret of success in sales: Get to know the people and culture!

Sidar, who pointed out that sales services are divided into two areas: online (field sales and direct sales) and online (e-commerce - market place), goes on to say: “We have clients from different sectors such as software, hardware, cyber security, media, textile, food, alcoholic beverages or automotive, as well as clients in B2B or B2C, SMEs or large corporations. With the sales ecosystem we developed, we can provide key solutions by including services of other companies who specialise in fields such as digital marketing, accounting, law and relocation”.

Don’t think, take action! Based on his international experience, Sidar shares his evaluations: “The UK market is one of the most competitive markets in the world! For the European continent, I think it is the most competitive. You can find the best, largest, cheapest and most ambitious companies from all over the world in this market. UK is a very saturated market so it really takes time, patience, investment and maintenance to create a success story here”. Sidar, who summarizes the biggest difference between success and failure as good preparation and leaving it up to luck, continues to say, “You must test both yourself and your products before you enter the market and go through a serious analysis process. For the UK market, how big or powerful your company is within your country’s market does not make a difference. You have to start again and be ready to run faster and longer this time. Sidar continues to give advice to entrepreneurs: “For all entrepreneurs who are thinking of doing business in UK, my first word will be that they are already late! Don’t think, just take action! But don’t just rely on your previous successes or your previous knowledge of the market and the customers. You need to research and be prepared”. Sidar, the founder of London Bridge Project, has published a book on R&D project management and incentives as well as establishing companies. He wrote several articles for newspapers, magazines, blogs and websites. Having been placed in Fortune Turkey’s list for “The most promising executives under 40 years of age” in 2012 and 2013, Sidar also won awards for “100 Fastest Growing Companies”, “Top 500 Information Technology Companies” and “ Most Promising Entrepreneur”.

Koray İnan, author of the “Sales 4.0” book, provides training and coaching services in the UK in sales, business development and cross-cultural communication. According to İnan, to be successful in the UK, entrepreneurs need to understand and be aware of their cultural diversity, and be open to changes in order to adapt to the cultural differences in the UK.

P

eople coming from outside the UK to the UK are attempting to make successful initiatives whilst trying to be successful and trying to adapt to the culture and life in this island. In order to be successful in the UK, where entrepreneurs from many different cultures live together, they need to observe the cross-cultural differences correctly and shape their business conduct, sales and marketing strategies accordingly. The fastest way to gain this skill? Getting professional support from the expert… Koray Inan, the author of the “Sales 4.0” book, provides training and coaching services to entrepreneurs from different cultures in the UK in sales, business development and intercultural communication. “Our goal is for entrepreneurs to adapt to the British culture and the UK sales climate as early as possible in order to be successful”, says İnan. He continues to add, “Sales and marketing might seem like technical issues. However, in essence, communication is an area of different disciplines such as psychology and sociology. Hence, recognizing people and society is a must for sales and marketing. You cannot succeed in sales and marketing without recognising a culture in a macro sense and without recognizing people in a micro sense”.u

If the product or service being offered to the market do not solve a problem or benefit anyone, the entrepreneur will struggle to survive.

Making online sales in the UK Your own website, Amazon, Ebay, ETSY… You can make sales anywhere, as long as it fits your product. These websites all have their pros and cons. But you must have a website.

I

have been living in UK for couple of years. Some of the people, well, maybe most of the people reading this magazine are doing so as well. As far as I have observed, almost everyone who settles in UK automatically starts to think of the same 3 business models: “opening up a cafe”, “making sales in market” or “making sales in Amazon/ Ebay”. Opening a cafe is rather expensive and requires high level of start up investment. Market or internet sales doesn’t really require that much of investment at the beginning, so it is easier for entrepreneurs, who want to find new ways of making money, to start making sales this way. As someone who’s actually making sales in Amazon and Ebay in UK with more than 20 years of experience in digital marketing and E-Commerce consultancy in Turkey, I feel like I have useful information for people who want to get into online sales arena.

Capital… How Important is it ? Capital structure and financing is important no matter the size of the company. It is imperative to thoroughly analyze the product you want to sell. In addition to the amount of money you are going to pay for the products, you have to analyze logistics, marketing and running costs. Taking everything into account, you should at least have 6 months’ worth of capital at the ready, which will keep both you and your company afloat while you generate little or no profit. If you take the right steps, you will probably start to make at least some profit at the end of the first month, from the products you’ve sold. But, making money over product’s unite rate won’t be enough for you. What’s important is your total turnover and a rise in profit.

You can make your sales through Amazon / your home / warehouse. My advice would be to choose the Amazon FBA model.

Where Should I Make Sales Online ? Your own website, Amazon, Ebay, ETSY… You can make sales anywhere, as long as it fits your product. These websites all have their pros and cons. But you must have a website! Even if you don’t make online sales, create a website so that your potential clients can reach you more easily. If you are planning to make online sales, you can start with a website on Shopify. Customers of Amazon, Ebay and ETSY all have different preferences and habits of shopping, so you have to make the marketplace that fits your product best, a priority.

How Do I Find Products to Sell ? Despite Brexit, English economy is still not fragile. Admittedly there is a downward tendency on macro level, but it won’t be a problem for your business. Actually, there are more opportunities than ever for a new entrepreneur. Because of this, you won’t be facing shrinkage in market and you won’t be facing the problem of not being able to sell your product. You can find information about the amount of sales made on Ebay. The numbers there will give you an idea. But you have to be careful about the amount of time it took for that product to reach that specific number of sales. For example, when you see a product that has sold 5000 units, it is equally important to find out how much time it took for that product to reach that number. You can make clearer and more predictable analyses in Amazon. You can find out about the monthly sales numbers of any products by using some technical softwares.

TurkishBritish High sales numbers may look like an opportunity, but there is a competition there. Low selling products will have less competitive markets. If you don’t have any products and are looking for something to sell, the most important thing you should know about marketplaces of Amazon and Ebay is that you shouldn’t start with something that is brand new and barely exists anywhere yet. Customers of Amazon and Ebay usually tend to buy products that they have already used before. Just find out which products sells more, and then decide the size of your stock.

How Do I Start Making Sales on Amazon ? You can set up an Amazon seller account as a Ltd company or a private company. Your seller account can be a basic or a professional account, which will vary in price. If your product is handmade, you can apply to “Amazon Handmade” account. Turning a basic account into a professional one or starting up as a private company and than changing into Ltd company is hard and it will waste your time, effort and performance. So “let’s get the ball rolling and see what happens first, I can change things later” attitude is not really a correct one if you are starting your Amazon seller business. Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA), can be described as your procedures being handled by Amazon workers in Amazon warehouses. First, products arrive at Amazon warehouse, and then put up for sale, on Amazon. When a customer buys a product, Amazon workers pack it up and deliver the package to the customer. Amazon is responsible for handling the refunds as well as getting the payments for the products from buyers. After Amazon gets its commission, the rest of the money goes into your bank account. Amazon makes these payments on a regular basis automatically. Explaining why everyone should use the FBA model is an article on its own. Which is why I am going to make it as simple and short as I can; with FBA, you don’t have to rent a storage and you don’t have to deal with packaging and shipment every time you receive an order. Most of your time will be spent in front of your computer, managing your business by yourself. The time you save will give you an advantage to make more sales, so, FBA model will be a better way for you to start your business.

Aaron Sarac is now one of the most successful investors in the United Kingdom with Pointis Pointis Solutions, founded by Aaron Sarac in 2016 in the UK, achieved great success in a short amount of time. Handling Amazon operations management for clients from various countries including Turkish, USA and European firms, Pointis created more than 4 million Pounds of trade volume in the last year.

P

ointis Solutions started its service 3 years ago in United Kingdom. Aaron (Harun) Sarac is the founder of the company, which is one of the leading companies in e-commerce management. He is enjoying great success as he passes on his experience and knowledge, into his company. His first steps abroad was to get education, which was in 2002 in Zurich University. He went back to Turkey in 2004 and started a small advertising agency. 3 years later he went to Shanghai, China as a business development consultant for a short project and in 2009 he went back to Turkey again. He worked as a product and project manager in one of the biggest telecommunication firms in Turkey until 2014. After that, he went on to become the head consultant for Value-Added Services and API Business Development group at Qatar based Ooredoo, one of the world’s leading telecommunications firm. As a part of Ooredoo, Sarac developed joint projects with Google, Facebook, Samsung, Huawei, Amazon and many more. At the beginning of 2016, Sarac completed his project at Ooredoo and instead of going back to Turkey, Sarac moved to UK. His career as an entrepreneur started in 2004 and in 2016, he reached a new high by founding Pointis Solutions. “My existing network provided me with a great advantage. It was also important that most of the colleagues and friends of mine back in Qatar were British, as that played a crucial role” Sarac stated.

We aim to become one of the UK’s leading companies in E-Commerce Pointis Solutions, founded by Sarac is active on 3 main fields, E-Commerce management(End to end marketplace operations management in Amazon especially), digital transformation and value added services content aggregation. In all 3 fields, various tasks are being carried out in many countries. Secret of their success is the blending of international sales experience and technical knowledge. 36

“Especially in business life, UK offers a cosmopolitan environment, stemming from its emperorship culture” states Sarac. E-Commerce is leading in demand according to Sarac. “It’s a field where we are leading the industry and creating many success stories in a really short amount of time. We created a trade volume of 4 million Pounds for more than 12 customers in just one year by managing Amazon operations. We are continuing to provide service to customers not just from Turkey, but from many European countries and U.S.A. With our sales and operation management services on E-Commerce, we want to become one of the leading companies in UK that achieves these goals on corporate level” Sarac stated.

The key to do business in the UK Starting a company and related bureaucratic processes are rather effortless and this causes competition in UK according to Sarac.”You can find business people of all shapes and sizes in here or you can find consultancy projects from a variety of lines of work” says Sarac.” My advice for entrepreneurs is: It would be wise of them to become an expert in a specific field and transform that knowledge into a product. You can be a part of great projects in Turkey, or you can manage massive telecommunications projects, commanding hundreds of staff. At the end of the day, if all these projects are not packaged as a product and you can’t call them your own, then none of it has any value in UK. To summarize, specializing and productization are the key to doing business in UK.u

Lack of business platform for the changed Turkish immigrant profile, watching people suffer from the same problems, time and again seeing different people struggle to find solutions for already-solved-problems inspired Müge Acar, Seda Sak and Zeynep Nil Suner to start a panel with the help of MetroBank. “What would sell?” was the question when Step Up started its sail in April 2018. CV design, export process, effective use of digital marketing and festival retailing were among many topics that were handled by Step Up London team. They want to provide their participants an information that can be put into practical use when they leave. The event can be described as industry professionals and experienced entrepreneurs sharing their experiences and knowledge with people on the matter at hand in a panel like fashion. It is also important to note that participants get to meet and exchange ideas with professionals before and after the panel, while having something to eat and drink, of course. Seminars and workshops are also organized, in order to actualize the new information provided in the panels.Monthly activities of Step Up are held at MetroBank’s Holborn office. A ‘Plan B’ for health: “Treatment Abroad” The search for international alternatives in the health and personal care sector is becoming increasingly common. In a World with less borders where information and travel have become easier, Plan B is providing ‘infinite’ health services.

Plan B Health: “A Global Market” Londra merkezli Plan B Health Travel Services, medical seyahatler için online bir dijital platform olarak çalışan bir start up. Plan B Health Travel Services is a London-based start-up that works as an online digital platform for health-related travel. Aiming to provide a transparent health tourism platform for patients all over the world to connect with doctors and health centres across all desired countries, Plan B is first working to build trust – one of the most important factors – among its British patients. As the representative of over 100 healthcare centres in London, the founder of Plan B Ayla Torun offered this explanation of her project. “Humanity has always been chasing after health. It has always aimed to be where the well-qualified doctors are. For close to 40 years, there has been a day-to-day increase in the number if people travelling abroad for treatment. There is a growing competition between countries and health centres. With the digital revolution that has changed the world following the introduction of the internet to our lives, this has also led to an important development in the health sector. With the digital health alternative, access to health opportunities have changed. Innovative solutions are now needed by this sector, which has now become global.

With the view that it is not difficult for anyone anywhere in the world to get access to the best doctors and health services, we have applied the “digital health” concept to our start-up project. Being aware of the importance of global investment in an increasingly digitalised world, we have established Plan B Health Travel Services in London, one of the world’s most important financial centres.

How does Plan B provide its services? Torun explains the services offered by Plan B as follows. “By lifting the borders, we give access to health services to everyone who needs it. We connect patients all over the world to the best doctor and the best address where they can obtain their preferred treatment. We bring together all the participants in the health sector – doctors, patients and hospitals – under one roof. In doing so, we have created a platform not only or the patient, but also a showcase for doctors and health institutions to increase their visibility. For the patient, we are reducing the time it takes to search for a doctor, hospital and treatment method. We also are responsible for all communications within the target audience of health institutions. Predicting the market for patients seeking private healthcare in the UK to be worth £620 million, Torun says, “this potential makes incentivising medical travel a convenient and important market. We are following and analysing all the dynamics.”

The first investment: Digital health Ayla Torun wrapped up with the following words, “As a start-up project, Plan B Health Travel Services is destined to be a well-thought and UK-based success. Digital health and medical tourism projects are some of the most favourable projects in the eyes of investors. We are continuing our meetings with our partners and investment groups. The UK is a good market and we are continuing to work with the aim of being a good actors within this market.” www.planbhts.com 41

Turkey; The Shining Star of International Healthcare Services Every year, more than 30 million people around the world travel abroad to receive treatment, This number grows larger every year and the competition between countries and healthcare providers is getting more fierce. Thanks to its technologically advanced infrastructured hospitals, professional doctors and experienced healthcare personnel, Turkey is one of the most preferred destinations for healthcare services in its region.

T

here has been a considerable rise in the amount of people who travel to different countries for preventative medicine and treatment in the last 20 years. This new activity, which can rightly be described as medical travel, involves around 30 million people moving across the world for healthcare services. As of today, medical travel is a 500 billion dollar industry and it is expected to reach 1 trillion dollars in 2023. Technological equipments, quality in service and payment conditions are some of the reasons that help create medical tourism. Patients who travel to other countries for healthcare services receive much more than just medical attention when they arrive at their preferred country. Starting from the moment they arrive at the airport, they are provided with many quality services. In a globalised world such as ours, travelling to other countries have become a mundane event. So when people experience health problems, they are not content with just looking for doctors at home. They search all over the world in depth for the best solutions and best prices available. 44

Getting Ahead With Its Quality Healthcare Services Turkey has become one of the most attractive countries in this field. Geographical location, having better technical equipments than its European competitors, having surgeons who can operate on the highest level and who are internationally experienced has helped Turkey become one of the leading countries in medical travel. Every year, thousands of people from all around the globe prefer Turkey for their treatments or to get other services that are included in medical travel. Turkey’s medical travel industry is showing a growth rate of %6 to %12 every year.

One of the World’s Top Three in JCI Accredited Hospitals One of the main reasons behind Turkey’s growth in this area is due to the fact that it is possible to receive medical operations which require advanced technology at European standards at much lower

costs. Modern cities like Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Antalya and Bursa have many important health centers and they host thousands of patients from all around the globe. It also helps that these modern cities and the quality of service in Turkey’s medical travel make tourists feel at ease and at home. Turkey has become world’s center for healthcare with its 44 hospitals that have been accredited with JCI and its world famous thermal springs. It is also important that payment conditions in Turkey are %75 to %95 more advantageous than U.S.A and %60 than Europe. Turkey’s record of having 44 JCI accredited hospitals is a definite sign of quality in service in medical travel. Due to its geographical location, Turkey has around 1 billion people living in nearby countries and as a result, medical tourism is considered a government policy. Medical tourism is included in country’s 10 year development plan and it’s aimed to bring 2 million tourists in the country, generating an estimate of 30 billion dollars by 2023.u 45

Eat ‘as nature provides’ and stay healthy! No additives lead us to stay healthy!

Healthy snacks by a woman entrepreneur Betul Gurevin, a Bogaziçi graduate chemical engineer, MBA started producing healthy snacks without any additives including sugar and salt, upon giving birth to her twins right after working for multinational pharmaceutical companies for 10 years. She aims to introduce her brand new PATENTED Pyrus and NO/Na products that she developed from her 10 generation family farm orchard’ to the world via London.

W

e all aim to consume food with health benefits but we are more precautious when we feed our kids. While we are cooking at home, we are more likely to cook them healthier whereas when we speak about snacks, we always find ourselves next to aisles of unhealthy snacks full of additives in the supermarkets. Betul Gurevin, a successful woman entrepreneur in the UK, started a health food company upon her detailed investigation on the market for no sugar no salt added formulations as a conscious mom. She was graduated from the department of Chemical Engineering in Bogaziçi University in 2006. She started her career in Pfizer at the university years than joined Ezcacıbaşı-Baxter and promoted as Market Access Team Leader. Than, she

was transferred to Reckitt Benckiser (UK) Istanbul office and promoted to a role within Marketing Department responsible for Healthcare and Personal Care products. She completed her MBA program in 2012 in Bogaziçi University.

Twins- Career Revolution Her twins were the milestone at her successful career. She was able to analyze certain defects of additives -including sugar and salt -to human cells while she was working as a chemical engineer for multinational pharmaceutical companies. She decided to take an initiative and started manufacturing health food for her babies. She realized that market was not as natural as it claimed to be. The products are full of additives, preservatives. She said that ‘I wanted to develop a value added pro46

We launched Pyrus and NO/Na brands in Turkey and reached a certain distribution and volume’. Later, she decided to introduce these unique&delicious&healthy delights to the world. London is one of the best options in the world to understand the world’ dynamics because of its diversity and cultural richness. Thus, she moved to London in December 2018 with her family to tell their story to the world.

No Sugar Added Category - Pyrus

Pyrus is a vegan, gluten & dairy free, only 3 ingredients snack with extremely low glycemic index and load. Pyrus is a healthy gift alternative from single farm =single source in 100% recyclable packs without any additives i.e.sugar,glucose syrup, palm oil, invert sugar, salt, preservatives, thickeners. The texture can be positioned as next generation Turkish delight/fruit jelly scoring as the lowest calories (24kcal) snack in the market fulfilling 50% of daily fiber and 72% of fiber intake. Thus it is suitable for everyone starting from solid food transition baby to elder people including diabetics, coeliac. Its unique formulation is approved by endocrinologists, pediatricians and nutritionists.

Health Starts In Soil As NOSUGARNOSALT initiative, their belief is ‘health starts in soil’. She said ‘ If and only if the soil is healthy and nutritive enough, the plants and animals living on could be healthy. The cycle ends up with human; so the soil and plants should be nutritive enough to heal us. Thus we should treat soil with an enormous care’. Starting Point of the Rout: The Admiralty Another historic structure stretching along the northern edge of the square is the Admiralty, the main headquarters of the Royal Navy which ruled the world’s seas and oceans for hundreds of years. The final draft of the naval operation, which has resulted in a disastrous defeat in Dardanelles on 18 March 1915, was shaped between the walls of this building. Winston Churchill was among its occupants as well. He oversaw the Royal Navy (1911-1915) as the First Lord of the Admiralty from his office in this building. This elite unit, which was formed by Churchill at the outset of the First World War, served at various fronts at Gallipoli and suffered heavy casualties. To commemorate all these sacrifices, it was inaugurated by Winston Churchill on 25 April 1925 on the 10th anniversary of the Dardanelles Campaign.

From Kastamonu to Gallipoli: Lord Kitchener The last stop on our route is the statue of Lord Kitchener standing in the shade of the trees adjacent to ‘Number 10’ just across the Admiralty. During the Dardanelles Campaign, he served as the Secretary of State for War and personally visited the Gallipoli Peninsula to inspect his troops in November 1915. But in fact, this was not his first visit to Turkey. In 1880, he briefly served as a military vice-consul in the Kastamonu province. Kitchener would later lose his life in the summer of 1916 while on a diplomatic mission aboard the armoured cruiser HMS Hampshire en route for Russia as a result of a hit by a German mine in the North Sea. After this brief tour of British history and culture, you can enjoy the rest of your day by exploring the exotic natural beauty of St. James’s Park. Bon voyage!u

Hope no one loses their countries.” In February, Temelkuran presented her new book to the public through a series of launch events in UK. Especially her session at the Parliament had attracted a large number of readers who had a chance to discuss the book’s arguments with the author herself.u

He explains that the bright, glossy planets in his paintings tell us how little we know the universe and the ancient monuments and settlements such as Yazılıkaya. They could be the beings of the world beyond us, and that we should not ignore the possibility that they can introduce us to the unreachable riches. The founder of his pioneering contemporary art form Faurizm, Patrick Faure defines Faurism as a kind of visual art that expresses the convergence of dreams, sexual desire, knowledge and wisdom. In his paintings, Faurizm finds shape with the juxtaposition of mythological fantasy and the modern man’s imagination. Another collection of Patrick Faure is taking place in the group exhibitions at S & V Gallery in New York on May 2 - 13. His work has also been selected among many artists to be shown at the international START Art Fair, at the world-famous Saatchi Gallery in London between 26-29 September 2019.

1001 Nights Tangos of Istanbul in London

Londoner ONUR with his new album “A Millenial Rhapsody” entered the music charts both in the UK and Turkey. France’s famous music blog Sound of Brit also featured Onur’s original music.

Orients Ensemble’s ‘Istanbul’s 1001 Night Tangos’ concert, which consisted of completely Turkish tangos for the first time in London, was greatly enjoyed by the audience. Next on the tour list are Turkey and the other European countries.

F

ollowing the vibe Onur created after the release of his three singles last year, London-based multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter and producer Onur has now introduced his new album ‘A Millennial Rhapsody’ ‘Move Too Soon,’ ‘A Millennial Raphsody’ and ‘Beautiful Mind’ to the listeners on various media platforms.

Favouried by many radio and music blogs and magazines including Earmilk, Reprezent, Hoxton Radio, Onur attracted the attention of EDM pioneer Martin Garrix. As soon of it was released ONUR’s debut album, “A Millennial Rhapsody”, composed of three songs, has landed on many Spotify play lists, like All New India, Solaris, New Music Friday UK and New Music Friday Turkey. France’s famous music blog, ‘Sound of Brit ’also featured Onur’s original music with the title ‘Who is this ONUR?’. Receiving tappreciation and admiration from many radio and music blogs and magazines, Onur also attracted the attention of EDM pioneer Martin Garrix. The young 22-year-old from London, has succeeded in turning her dreams and facts into original melodies through emotional notes and guitar. He combined the tunes of old with modern music and reflected three different streams in three compositions. While ‘Move Too Soon’ attracted the fantasies and experiences of a great night, the song, called ‘A Millennial Rhapsody’ which shares the same name with the album received its inspiration from Brexit. “The country is in the hands of old people. The history is repeating, itself” says ONUR, expressing his concern. “As a young generation, we do get involve with art, culture and music and we can express ourselves well. This song is about my abstinence from the stupid rule of the country. I’m showing my middle finger to the establishment who is afraid to explain that it is unfair”, he says. ONUR’s EP launch of ‘A Millennium Rhapsody ’ took place in London’s well known night club, The Social on May 4th. ONUR’s new concert will be at St Johns Church in Hoxton on the 15th June 2019.u

TurkishBritish Olcay Bayır’s New Album: Dream of a Good World Put into Words Olcay Bayir is setting out on a journey from Anatolia by her new album ‘Rüya’ (Dream). In Rüya where she tells the story of peace and love, she brings together the musical heritage of different cultures in a fascinating way.

T

he new album offers Olcay Bayır’s own compositions for the first time. Olcay, who voices her dream of a better world in Rüya, said the process of producing the album made her feel like a child again and thereby, she was able to express her wish for love and peace innocently. Love in Olcay Bayır’s music is a dominant theme as in the song ‘Arı Oldum’ (I became a bee). Olcay said “You cannot separate bees and honey, and this metaphor is referred to in the Alawite and Sufi tradition. It is useless when they are separate. Together and in a fertile vineyard, they form something meaningful and very nice. When love is romantic or platonic, it leads to love at a higher level; the divine love.” The Dream album is the next step in a long journey that began in one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world, more than 3,000 kilometers away from cosmopolitan London. The opening song of her new album called ‘Uzun İnce Bir Yoldayım’ (I am on a long narrow road). It is an excerpt from Âşık Veysel Şatıroğlu, one of the most respected Turkish folk poets. Inspired by Şatıroğlu, Olcay reinterpreted the

lyrics: “I’m on a long road between two doors. I walk all day long; I walk all night long.” The song shows parallels with Olcay’s journey from birth to afterlife by referring to the metaphor of the Alawites. Classically trained as a soprano, collaborations with musicians from all over the world have enriched Olcay’s music as much as the rich tradition of Kurdish and Turkish folk songs. This album, edited and produced by Al MacSween and Giuliano Modarelli, bears the musical mark of the world-famous jazz collective Kefaya.u
