the pow-wow A pow-wow (also powwow or pow wow or pau wau) is a gathering of North America’s Native people. The word derives from the Narragansett word powwaw, meaning “spiritual leader”.
A modern pow-wow is a specific type of event where both Native American and non-Native American people meet to dance, sing, socialize, and honour Aboriginal culture. Pow-wows vary in length from one day sessions of five to six hours to three days; however, major pow-wows called for a special occasion can be up to one week long.
There is no shortness of First Nations culture to experience in the Rainy River District. Take a trip out to the Kay-Nah-Chi-Wah-Nung Historical Centre, where you will learn more about First Nation culture and tradition. If you have the chance, check out a local pow-wow.
