e d i r P d n a l er Community BBQueer “Pride has become increasingly more important to me as I get older and more comfortable with myself. We’ve made great strides in moving towards equality - but there are still those who would rather see Pride not exist, and LGBTQ2S community members retreat into themselves. Pride isn’t just a celebration of our diversity, but a reminder that it had to be fought for in the first place. The parades came from marches, which were borne of protests. People are still now dying every day, wishing they could live their truth. That’s why Pride is important to me - I celebrate for those who can’t!” Caitlin Hartlen - Fort Frances

Stephanie Hagenaars Fort Frances Times July 18, 2018 Borderland Pride made history this weekend when over 200 people crossed over the International Bridge as part of the “Passport to Pride” march in celebration of the inaugural 2018 Rainy River District and Koochiching County “Pride Week.” Hundreds of people donning colourful shirts and hats, rainbow flags and signs of support were led by Fort Frances High School GayStraight Alliance members Macey McMillen and Raina Johnson. The one-mile march began in Smokey Bear Park in International Falls where U.S. dignitaries and special guests offered their words and support. After the remarks, the march was underway, heading down

3rd Street, then north towards the Canadian border. The large group made their way across the bustling bridge, which was backlogged with cars and trucks towing boats. After patiently making their way through Canadian customs, the march continued down Church Street for a flag ceremony at the Fort Frances Civic Centre. And after, Borderland Pride cochairs Doug Judson and Peter Howie stood behind the podium as Judson offered a few words for the crowd. “We have said it many times when asked about why Pride is important in small towns,” he said. “The answer is simple: Pride is most needed where its people are fewest in number, because that is where our young people, and others struggling with sexual orientation, gender identity or gender-based harassment or violence, are most vulnerable.” Judson added that Pride—especially in small towns—is also about showing the LGBTQ2 youth that their community and authority figures, as well as various organizations and institutions around them “care about
them, accept them for the people they are and want to give them all of the love we can to grow into the best people they can be.” Over the years, the stigma surrounding being gay or “coming out” has caused some to be bullied, and even sometimes cast aside by their families. And because of this, statistics for the rate of homeless LGBTQ2 youth, as well as those same youth who attempt or succeed in committing suicide are overwhelming. “That is simply not good enough,” said Judson. When the speeches were finished, the party moved to the Rainy Lake Square for a community “BBQueer” and entertainment, in partnership with the Fort Frances Museum. Borderland Pride plans to make Pride Week an annual event, while also offering smaller events throughout the year.
Background Information ‘LGBTQ2A’ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, and twospirit community and their ‘straight’ and allies. Borderland Pride was formed after a series of community consultations and roundtables spearheaded by local organizers summer 2018. Pride Week was officially proclaimed by the Town of Fort Frances and the City of International Falls earlier 2018, and civic leaders on both sides of the border have were invited to deliver remarks as part of the flag ceremony and Pride March on July 14, 2018. Pride flags were distributed to the surrounding municipalities, First Nations, and downtown businesses in the Fort and Falls.

“We are a community in transition - economically, socially, and demographically. Celebrating Pride and highlighting our community’s values of diversity and inclusion is critical if we want it to grow, attract, and retain young people, young families, new businesses and service providers - and promise they hold for our future.” Douglas W. Judson - Fort Frances
“Pride is not only a celebration of the LGBTQ2 community, but recognizes equality and acceptance for all people, no matter their race, age, gender or orientation. During Pride Week, it’s important to remember that there are many places - both close to home and around the world - where life is still very difficult for those who are born LGBTQ2. I’m so proud to come from a community which is making changes to become more inclusive and welcoming toward everyone.” Jamie Pryde - Fort Frances

A 150-year old mystery
C. S. I. The Arctic
When Sir John Franklin’s two ships Erebus and Terror sailed from England in 1845 they were part of a long line of British expeditions that had searched for the Northwest Passage for four hundred years. The Passage was believed to be a short cut from England to the Orient. Such a short cut would avoid the long trek around South America, speeding up and improving trade. Franklin never found the Passage. In fact, his entire crew perished under mysterious circumstances. Despite numerous rescue attempts and later recovery missions that continued over 160 years, the Erebus and Terror remained lost in the ice, until September 2014 when the Erebus was finally found.
The Franklin Expedition was the most sophisticated and well-equipped Arctic expedition that had been outfitted to that date. They felt ready for anything the Arctic could muster, and then some.
A Present Pre-occupation
Exhibits that depict the story of man and nature as it relates to the history of Fort Frances and the surrounding Rainy River District. Ongoing travelling exhibits as well as programming throughout the summer.
Thanks to the work of forensic archaeologists, Inuit assistance and Arctic scientists, we are on our way to solving this Polar mystery, while we continue to explore this important part of our land. Growing concerns about climate change make it increasingly important to understand the Arctic regions and Polar history. It is a history that is primarily told through the exploits of explorers like those of the Franklin expedition and those who searched the Arctic for them.
The Hallett Sorting Gap Marina The largest, most powerful boat on Rainy Lake used extensively for moving logs to the mill. Tours available through the summer.
Franklin: A Promising Beginning Sir John Franklin, a commander in the British Royal Navy, was considered a hero because of his daring surveying and mapping trips to the Arctic. In 1845 he led his third expedition to the Arctic, this time to search for the Northwest Passage. He brought two well-equipped ships, the HMS Erebus and the HMS Terror, and over 100 men. The expedition passed their first winter at Beechey Island, and then sailed off to King William Island. But something was going terribly wrong.
EMO: Women’s Institute Museum 21 Tyrell Street 807-274-3991 Summer hours: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Winter: open upon request Features artifacts from pioneers of the district.

High-tech and well-provisioned For extra strength against the crushing ice, the ships’ hulls were doubled in thickness. The two sailing vessels had extra power from steam engines with retractable propellers. Against malnutrition, starvation and scurvy, three years of canned meat and vegetables would satisfy the crew. Against the bitter cold, the vessels had central heating. To combat isolation, they even had a 1,700-volume library that contained the latest copies of Dickens. Their holds were crammed with wine, rum and tobacco. The officers were supplied with snuff, silver cutlery, silk handkerchiefs and slippers.
A Mysterious End By 1848, they had been frozen in the ice for two years. Franklin and others were dead from an unknown ailment. The crews abandoned ship and began marching south. Then they disappeared. More than 100 people vanished without a trace. Nothing has ever been found save a few artifacts, scraps of debris, a few frozen corpses and skeletons. Some of the bones reveal cut marks, a sign that cannibalism took place. How and why did this well provisioned and elaborate expedition fail? What mysterious disease did its members contract? Why and where did the survivors disappear? It is truly the most intriguing of all Polar mysteries.
Echoes in the Ice: The Collages Echoes in the Ice is unique. For the first time visual artist and documentary film director Rik van Glintenkamp has used the art of collage to trace historic polar events. The exploration of the Arctic and the Northwest Passage, their history and ecology, are told through portraits, profiles and personal effects of the heroic explorers as they create Arctic history. These divergent elements are presented in visually dynamic ways. The technique is similar to the concept of interrelated websites. The portraits are combined with reproductions of historic diaries, letters, maps, charts, drawings and photographs to create a multi-faceted impression of each explorer. They take the viewer on a visual journey across four hundred years of Arctic history and the Northwest Passage from Martin Frobisher to Roald Amundsen.
Hudson Bay display, war memorabilia, pioneer rooms, antique logging equipment and local history.
Rainy River: Railroad Heritage Museum and 4008 Steam Engine Hwy. 11 History of Rainy River with emphasis on the railway, all displayed within the restored railway car. Also on site is the restored steam engine and caboose.
June 29 - September 22 at the Fort Frances Museum Opens at the Fort Frances Museum and Cultural Centre The Fort Frances Museum is proud to host the travelling exhibition Echoes in the Ice – Finding Franklin’s Ship. Ever since explorers began searching for a Northwest Passage over 400 years ago, the Arctic has been a fascinating and important area of study, rich with drama, adventure, even tragedy. Using artifacts, images, audiovisual presentations, and art, Echoes in the Ice: Finding Franklin’s Ship examines Arctic exploration past and present, profiles the explorers involved in the search for the Northwest Passage, and decodes the mysteries of the Franklin Expedition of 1845, in which an entire crew vanished in the Arctic during an ill-fated search. These stories are told using artifacts such as instruments and objects dating from the same period as the Franklin Expedition, as well as contemporary scientific objects used by present-day scientists investigating
the high Arctic. New additions to the exhibition include recent Parks Canada photographs of the HMS Terror, as well as photographs and videos from the discovery of HMS Erebus. The exhibition is a co-production of Gone West Productions and the Canada Science and Technology Museum in Ottawa, with the generous support of Natural Resources Canada and Parks Canada. “The discoveries of the wrecks of the Franklin Expedition ships in the Canadian North are significant archaeological and historical achievements. We are glad to share Echoes in the Ice across the country to help Canadians learn more about the compelling story, and to help them live history as it unfolds through this exhibition.” – Christina Tessier, President and CEO of Ingenium – Canada’s Museums of Science and Innovation
