THE UPSIDE OF INTERNET RESEARCH There are times when the Internet can be really helpful. “The Internet can help you make lifestyle changes that your provider may recommend,” Partridge said. “There are lots of recipes; exercise programs; and information about special diets, such as low-sodium or low-fat. You can also use the Internet for additional information about a diagnosis you already have so you can learn more about it and better understand why your doctor has suggested making certain changes.”

THE REGION’S LEADER IN TREATMENT WITHOUT TRANSFUSION For a variety of reasons, religious as well as health-related, many patients wish to avoid blood transfusion when undergoing medical treatment. For more than 14 years, we have led the region in meeting this specialized need. Since 1999, Franciscan Transfusion-Free Medicine and Surgery Program (TMSP) has helped patients get the care they require without the need for transfused blood.

“We’re the patient’s advocate,” said Jarrell Fox, regional manager of TMSP. “We’re very hands-on in optimizing patients for surgery and making sure their wishes are met.”

TMSP serves over 4,500 patients each year, including 600 surgeries.

Initially the program was founded to serve those seeking transfusion-free treatment on religious grounds.

However, more and more patients

simply wish to avoid associated health risks of donated blood, such as allergic reactions, antibody development, abnormal blood clotting, infections, immune suppression and kidney failure. The most serious infections include hepatitis and HIV/AIDS. “Many of our patients work in health care and just want to eliminate unnecessary risks,” said Fox. The first step for patients is a consultation with a nurse specialist to determine under what, if any, conditions that donated blood may be used.

All pre-treatment issues, such as anemia, are addressed to minimize risk of complications. When requested, patients are referred to one of our physicians experienced in providing this specialized care.

is just a click away In June 2013 Franciscan Health System began rolling out our new electronic medical record (EMR) system at primary care clinics. The system will be live at all our primary and specialty care clinics by the end of 2013. St. Elizabeth Hospital, which already has EMR, will transition to the new system next year.

A special feature called MyChart gives you secure 24/7 online access to your medical charts, including summaries of your office visits to Franciscan clinics.

It also offers features such as secure messaging to send questions to your doctors and the ability to view upcoming appointments, pay bills and more.

WHY AN ELECTRONIC MEDICAL RECORD? You see them every time you visit your doctor’s office — shelf after shelf of file folders storing medical records printed on reams of paper. You could easily have dozens of files stored across town, and much of the information in them might not be shared.

“With the new electronic medical record, when you see a Franciscan specialist, like a cardiologist, your Franciscan primary care provider can access the specialist’s notes about your visit. And, after St. Dean Field, MD Elizabeth transitions to the new system, the staff there also will have immediate access to your complete record if, for example, you need emergency care,” explained Franciscan family doctor Dean Field, MD, a leader on the project.

BLOOD CLOTS A CONCERN?

Convenient clinic monitors your medication If you have a health condition that puts you at risk for developing blood clots, the medication Warfarin — also known as Coumadin — can be tremendously helpful for keeping you well. But Warfarin also has risks. The medication needs to be closely monitored to make sure you’re receiving just the right amount. Fortunately you can get the high-tech care and support you need right here in Enumclaw.

Last December St. Elizabeth Hospital opened the Anticoagulation Clinic to treat people on Warfarin. During your appointment, a quick blood test allows us to check factors related to blood clotting so we can adjust your dose accordingly.

Lena and Mike Binetti are grateful for the care they’ve received at the Anticoagulation Clinic. Mike, 87, has taken Warfarin for about 20 years to treat a genetic condition that puts him at risk for blood clots. He sometimes visits the new clinic — located just a few miles from his home — as often as twice a week. “We used to wait a day or more to find out the results of the blood test, but within a 15-minute visit we now know how well he’s doing and any changes he needs to make,” Lena said. “It gives us peace of mind because if there are any problems they’re corrected immediately.”

FOCUSED ON YOUR RECOVERY While calls aren’t directly tied to official patient satisfaction scores, responses are tracked and used to help make Franciscan’s great care even better. Physicians and nurses get a chance to hear your perspective directly from you, and can adjust their care strategies accordingly. “These calls are focused solely on helping us better serve and care for our patients, and we’re pleased to be able to offer them,” she said.

KEEPING YOUR CARE IN MIND We began exploring the CipherVoice technology last year at St. Clare Hospital in Lakewood as a way to help heart failure patients stay on track with Jill Smith, RN critical interventions — a low-salt diet, for example — that help keep them out of the hospital.

The comprehensive pilot program contributed to reduced heart failure readmission rates.

“Based on these great results, Franciscan is really pleased to extend CipherVoice services to all our inpatients and Emergency Department visitors and expect to see similar rates of reduction in readmissions across the system,” said Jill Smith, RN, program administrator of Virtual Health Services at Franciscan.

When surgery becomes necessary, you want to know you’re getting the best care possible. That’s why St. Elizabeth Hospital offers a full range of advanced surgical options, including minimally invasive surgery.

SMALL INCISIONS, BIG BENEFITS During minimally invasive surgery, tiny cameras inserted into small incisions help surgeons see into the surgical site with significantly greater magnification than the naked eye. These small incisions, through which surgeons operate with slender, miniaturized tools, help minimize trauma to surrounding skin and muscle.

This means post-surgical pain is generally lessened, hospital stays are shorter, infection risk is reduced and recovery is quicker. But when minimally invasive procedures such as arthroscopy and laparoscopy are an option — as they are at St. Elizabeth for everything from shoulder repair to gallbladder surgery — these general benefits are only the beginning.

“Arthroscopy can help us do that. It’s about the most minimally invasive procedure there is.”

In arthroscopy, a tiny instrument and camera combination called an endoscope is inserted through a very small incision for diagnosis and repair of joints. Dr. Miller specializes in using this technologically advanced procedure for shoulder joint surgeries such as rotator cuff repairs.

He is one of the few surgeons in the South Sound area with this specialized skill and brings this capability to St. Elizabeth.

“Most are back to work or school within a week.”

Twenty years ago, the same surgery may have meant 4 to 6 weeks out of work, Dr. Atkinson explained. “Surgical techniques have really improved overall,” he said. “Even when we perform a surgery in an open fashion, we’re working to minimize trauma to tissue surrounding the surgical site, so there’s less bleeding and infection risk.”

Where healthy MEETS delicious Experts at Franciscan Health System have developed the program “Healthy is Delicious: Eating a Mediterranean Diet” to show the community just how mouthwatering a healthy diet can be. During the past year, Franciscan Cancer Care’s Tricia Sinek, RD, has hosted the program two to three times at each of the Franciscan hospitals with great success.

Along with a trained chef at each location, Sinek helps attendees better understand the features and benefits of a Mediterranean diet and how to make it a part of their lives.

“The main feature of the Mediterranean diet is that it consists mostly of plants including fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts and seeds,” she said. “There’s very little red meat, some poultry and some wild fish. Countless studies show that eating this way helps reduce inflammation in the body, which lowers your risk of numerous diseases such as heart disease and diabetes, as well as death.”

EAT WELL, LIVE WELL Glori Schneider, a retired Franciscan employee, attended the Healthy is Delicious program earlier this year. “In the 20 years I worked at Franciscan it was the best program I ever attended,” she said. “Tricia made the diet and the foods seem so accessible.”

The best part about learning about the Mediterranean diet, Schneider said, is that it doesn’t feel like any other diet she’s 12

ever tried. “It’s not a diet, it’s a lifestyle,” she said. “Unlike other diets, and I’ve tried them all, it doesn’t feel restrictive. I can have nuts and avocados! Now I’m learning to cook kale, Swiss chard and beets, which are all things I’d never had before. It’s been exciting for me to learn about and experiment with using different foods Tricia taught us about during the program.”

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction A life-skills practice that will help keep your stress at a healthier level and is ideal for people living with anxiety and depression, cancer, heart disease, chronic pain, high blood pressure, sleep disorders and other ongoing conditions.
