Another risk, Hamlin said, is that information online can create anxiety.

“It’s not unusual for an Internet search to make you feel like you have a condition that’s much more serious or much rarer than what’s actually going on.” Her advice: “Always be up-front with your doctor about what you’ve found so you can discuss it and better understand why it may or may not be accurate.”

THE UPSIDE OF INTERNET RESEARCH There are times when the Internet can be really helpful. “The Internet is especially helpful when you have a chronic health condition such as diabetes because you can easily look up diet choices, lifestyle choices and more that can help you reduce complications and stay well,” Hamlin said.

When searching for medical information to help you stay well, here are some guidelines and reliable sources:

THE REGION’S LEADER IN TREATMENT WITHOUT TRANSFUSION For a variety of reasons, religious as well as health-related, many patients wish to avoid blood transfusion when undergoing medical treatment. For more than 14 years, we have led the region in meeting this specialized need. Since 1999, Franciscan Transfusion-Free Medicine and Surgery Program (TMSP) has helped patients get the care they require without the need for transfused blood.

“We’re the patient’s advocate,” said Jarrell Fox, regional manager of TMSP. “We’re very hands-on in optimizing patients for surgery and making sure their wishes are met.”

TMSP serves over 4,500 patients each year, including 600 surgeries.

Initially the program was founded to serve those seeking transfusion-free treatment on religious grounds.

However, more and more patients simply wish to avoid associated health risks of donated blood, such as allergic reactions, antibody development, abnormal blood clotting, infections, immune suppression and kidney

failure. The most serious infections include hepatitis and HIV/AIDS. “Many of our patients work in health care and just want to eliminate unnecessary risks,” said Fox. The first step for patients is a consultation with a nurse specialist to determine under what, if any, conditions that donated blood may be used. All pre-treatment issues, such as anemia, are addressed to minimize risk of complications. When requested, patients are referred to one of our physicians experienced in providing this specialized care. A TMSP team member stays involved throughout treatment, making sure the patient desires are addressed. In cases of emergency, a nurse specialist is oncall 24 hours a day, ready to meet with doctors to facilitate transfusionfree care.

is just a click away In June 2013 Franciscan Health System began rolling out our new electronic medical record system at primary care clinics. The system launches at St. Francis Hospital in August, as well as St. Anthony, St. Clare and St. Joseph. It will be live at all Franciscan primary and specialty care clinics by the end of 2013. A special feature called MyChart gives you secure 24/7 online access to your medical charts, including summaries of your office visits. It also offers you secure messaging to send questions to your doctors and the ability to view upcoming appointments, pay bills and more.

HOW ELECTRONIC MEDICAL RECORDS HELP YOU For decades medical records have consisted of reams of paper organized in shelf after shelf of file folders. You could easily have dozens of files across several facilities, from clinics to hospitals, and much of the information in them might not be shared.

With the new system, you’ll have a single Franciscan medical record. All your Franciscan doctors and nurses will view and update it, so your entire team will have a complete, accurate picture of your care.

“With an electronic medical record, when you see a specialist, like a cardiologist, your primary care doctor can access the specialist’s Dean Field, MD notes about your visit. After you have a lab test or X-ray, your doctor can pull up the results. If you need to go to the emergency room, the staff there can quickly find out what conditions you have and what medications you take,” said Franciscan family doctor Dean Field, MD, a leader on the project.

MYCHART PUTS YOU IN CHARGE MyChart is your tool to access your electronic medical record 24/7 and reach out to your Franciscan healthcare team when and where it’s convenient for you — using your computer, tablet or smartphone. With MyChart, you can: ■ View your medical chart, including summaries of your medical visits.

■ Review your current medications.

■ Securely send medical questions to your primary care provider.

■ Request prescription refills from your primary care provider.

■ View normal test results. (Your provider will call about abnormal results.)

Interventional radiology: Better imaging, better outcomes

Franciscan Vascular Lab in Federal Way provides sophisticated testing and convenient care for many vascular conditions.

“In the vascular lab, we use a Doppler ultrasound to measure the blood flow through a blood vessel, which allows us to diagnose Omar Dorzi, MD vascular problems,” said Franciscan Vascular Associate’s Omar Dorzi, MD, board-certified in general and vascular surgery with fellowship training in interventional radiology. For blockages, often within the same visit your vascular surgeon can develop a treatment plan and even schedule a procedure to treat your condition. This provides you with a seamless and convenient experience.

One of the high-tech vascular treatments Dr. Dorzi performs is a procedure called atherectomy. If you have a blockage in an artery due to a condition like peripheral artery disease (PAD), atherectomy may help. “It’s used to treat blockages in arteries that are close to a joint such as the groin or behind the knee where implanting a stent to open the blockage could break.”

Instead of placing a stent that could break, atherectomy uses a special tool to shave away plaque that’s blocking blood flow through the artery.

St. Francis’ interventional radiology team provides minimally invasive techniques to treat a wide range of health conditions. “With interventional radiology, we use image-guided technology while performing procedures. This allows us to see what’s happening inside the body while Jarvis Chen, MD guiding our instruments. Therefore procedures can be done more safely and with less recovery time,” said Jarvis Chen, MD, a board-certified radiologist with fellowship training and additional certification in interventional radiology.

Dr. Chen performs a high-tech procedure called chemoembolization. This is often used to treat tumors that occur in the liver.

During the procedure, he threads a catheter through an artery to access the tumor. “Once there, I administer chemotherapy drugs as well as embolic agents — tiny spheres that block off arteries feeding the tumor to kill off or slow the growth of cancer cells,” Dr. Chen said. This has fewer side effects than traditional chemotherapy and typically you can go home in less than 24 hours.

Chemoembolization has a significant survival benefit for people with certain types of cancer. Also, by keeping tumors small enough and preventing new ones from growing, it may help you become a candidate for curative surgery.

KEEPING YOUR CARE IN MIND We began exploring the CipherVoice technology last year at St. Clare Hospital in Lakewood as a way to help heart failure patients stay on track with critical interventions — a low-salt diet, for example — that help keep them out of the hospital. The comprehensive pilot program contributed to reduced heart failure readmission rates.

When surgery becomes necessary, you want to know you’re getting the best care possible. That’s why St. Francis Hospital offers a full range of advanced surgical options, including minimally invasive surgery.

SMALL INCISIONS, BIG BENEFITS In minimally invasive surgery, tiny cameras inserted into small incisions help surgeons see into the surgical site with significantly greater magnification than the naked eye. These small incisions, through which surgeons operate with slender, miniaturized tools, help minimize trauma to surrounding skin and muscle.

When trauma to the body is minimized, post-surgical pain is generally lessened, hospital stays are shorter, infection risk is reduced and recovery is quicker. However, when minimally invasive laparoscopy or robotic-assist surgery is an option — as it is at St. Francis — these general benefits are only the beginning.

The primary benefit of minimally invasive surgical techniques, said board-certified general surgeon Troy Houseworth, MD, FACS, is the enhanced visualization Troy Houseworth, of the surgical site. In some cases, he noted, minimally MD, FACS invasive procedures offer even better visualization of the operative site than open surgery.

“It may seem counterintuitive, but we can often see more through smaller incisions using laparoscopic tools or the da Vinci robot than we can with a large incision,” he said. “You can get really close to target anatomy with the camera, with as much as a 10-fold magnification in 3D, in the case of the da Vinci robotic-assist system.”

He said this kind of visualization helps in complex cases, particularly when there is suturing — or stitching — involved.

The surgeon’s range of motion using the specialized robotic instruments is also improved. “Instead of being straight, as they are in traditional laparoscopy, instruments are ‘wristed.’ You can bend them around body structures. It also helps with very detailed work like suturing,”

The Franciscan Center for Weight Management is one of the highestvolume weight loss surgery centers on the West Coast. “We’re very pleased to offer our patients the latest in weight loss surgery with the da Vinci and other minimally invasive techniques,” said Dr. Houseworth.

It’s important to note that even though the da Vinci system is called a “robot,” the surgeon is the one in control. “The robot doesn’t move without the surgeon. At its most basic, the da Vinci is a very sophisticated remote control device that allows us to see better and manipulate instruments with greater ease. In cases where its use is appropriate, we’re able to offer our patients the best chance of achieving excellent outcomes,” said Dr. Houseworth.

Where healthy meeTs delicious Experts at Franciscan Health System have developed the program “Healthy is Delicious: Eating a Mediterranean Diet” to show the community just how mouthwatering a healthy diet can be. During the past year, Franciscan Cancer Care’s Tricia Sinek, RD, has hosted the program two to three times at each of the Franciscan hospitals with great success.

Along with a trained chef at each location, Sinek helps attendees better understand the features and benefits of a Mediterranean diet and how to make it a part of their lives.

“The main feature of the Mediterranean diet is that it consists mostly of plants including fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts and seeds,” she said. “There’s very little red meat, some poultry and some wild fish. Countless studies show that eating this way helps reduce inflammation in the body, which lowers your risk of numerous diseases such as heart disease and diabetes, as well as death.”

EAT WELL, LIVE WELL Glori Schneider, a retired Franciscan employee, attended the Healthy is Delicious program earlier this year. “In the 20 years I worked at Franciscan it was the best program I ever attended,” she said. “Tricia made the diet and the foods seem so accessible.”

The best part about learning about the Mediterranean diet, Schneider said, is that it doesn’t feel like any other diet she’s 12

ever tried. “It’s not a diet, it’s a lifestyle,” she said. “Unlike other diets, and I’ve tried them all, it doesn’t feel restrictive. I can have nuts and avocados! Now I’m learning to cook kale, Swiss chard and beets, which are all things I’d never had before. It’s been exciting for me to learn about and experiment with using different foods Tricia taught us about during the program.”

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction A life-skills practice that will help keep your stress at a healthier level and is ideal for people living with anxiety and depression, cancer, heart disease, chronic pain, high blood pressure, sleep disorders and other ongoing conditions.
