Your health online
Know the potential risks and limitations of searching for health information on the Web Does this sound familiar? You experience an unusual health symptom and a quick Internet search later you have pages of information about what might be wrong. According to a survey by the Pew Internet & American Life Project, 80 percent of Internet users have searched for health information online. When it comes to your health, the Internet must be used wisely. Knowing the risks and limitations of what you find can improve your well-being and keep you in the driver’s seat of your health.
SeaRcH SmaRtly “The biggest risk with Internet research is if you come up with a diagnosis or treatment plan for Lawrence Tsai, MD yourself without ever talking with your physician,” said Lawrence Tsai, MD, a family medicine physician at Franciscan Medical Clinic at St. Joseph. “Never use the Internet as a replacement for a visit with your doctor.”
looking for reliable health information on the Web or need to find a doctor? visit FHShealth.org today!
10437M_Franciscan_Su13.indd 3
Another risk is that the information online can make you feel very anxious. “The Internet can make you feel like you have a condition that’s much more serious than you actually have,” Dr. Tsai said. “There’s a lot of misinformation out there. See your doctor so you can better understand what’s going on. Try not to believe what you read unless it’s confirmed by your doctor.”
■
tHe uPSide of inteRnet ReSeaRcH There are times when the Internet can be really helpful. “The Internet is especially helpful for patients with chronic health conditions,” Dr. Tsai said. “The time you have with your doctor can be limited, so you can use the Internet to look up how to make the diet and lifestyle changes your doctor suggests in order to better manage your health conditions.” When searching for medical information to help you stay well, here are some guidelines and reliable sources: ■ FHShealth.org offers reliable

We also have the HealthAware tool to assess and manage your risk of various diseases such as heart attack and stroke. Websites that end in “.gov” are government-sponsored. For example CDC.gov has information about infectious and communicable diseases, immunizations and more. THE REGION’S LEADER IN TREATMENT WITHOUT TRANSFUSION For a variety of reasons, religious as well as health-related, many patients wish to avoid blood transfusion when undergoing medical treatment. For more than 14 years, we have led the region in meeting this specialized need. Since 1999, Franciscan Transfusion-Free Medicine and Surgery Program (TMSP) has helped patients get the care they require without the need for transfused blood. “We’re the patient’s advocate,” said Jarrell Fox, Regional Manager of TMSP. “We’re very hands-on in optimizing patients for surgery and making sure their wishes are met.” TMSP serves over 4,500 patients each year, including 600 surgeries. Initially the program was founded to serve those seeking transfusion-free treatment on religious grounds. However, more and more patients simply wish to avoid associated health risks of donated blood, such as allergic reactions, antibody development, abnormal blood clotting, infections, immune suppres-
sion, and kidney failure. The most serious infections include hepatitis and HIV/AIDS. “Many of our patients work in health care and just want to eliminate unnecessary risks,” said Fox. The first step for patients is a consultation with a nurse specialist to determine under what, if any, conditions that donated blood may be used. All pre-treatment issues, such as anemia, are addressed to minimize risk of complications. When requested, patients are referred to one of our physicians experienced in providing this specialized care. A TMSP team member stays involved throughout treatment, making sure the patient’s desires are addressed. In cases of emergency, a nurse specialist is on-call 24 hours a day, ready to meet with doctors to facilitate transfusion-free care. We feature state-of-the-art equipment and highly skilled surgeons and staff, enabling patients to receive safe, effective non-emergency treatment without the need for donated blood.
NO BLOOD
Transfusion-free technologies and techniques include: ■ Cauterizing surgical instruments, instead of traditional scalpels ■ Medication to increase production of red blood cells and encourage clotting ■ Devices that filter and return your blood ■ Blood-dilution therapies ■ Techniques to lower blood pressure and body temperature ■ Laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgical techniques If you’re seeking transfusion-free treatment or wish to plan ahead in case of emergency admission, contact TMSP today. Getting around St. Joseph Medical Center is becoming much easier this summer due to new letter designations that will differentiate one building, parking lot or area from another. Burgundy-colored letters, A through H, on a square, white background will be featured on main and secondary directional signs. These letters will also be part of building and parking lot identification signs. To make finding your way easier, appointment schedulers will now provide the name of the building in which your visit is to take place along with the letter identifier of the building. After this summer, when you visit St. Joseph, simply look for directional arrows and signage of the letter corresponding to your desired location! e is just a click away In June 2013 Franciscan Health System began rolling out our new electronic medical record (EMR) system at primary care clinics. The system launches at St. Joseph Medical Center in August as well as St. Anthony, St. Clare and St. Francis. It will be live at all Franciscan primary and specialty care clinics by the end of 2013. A special feature called MyChart gives you secure 24/7 online access to your medical charts, including summaries of your office visits, and offers features such as secure messaging to send questions to your doctors and the ability to view upcoming appointments, pay bills and more.
HoW electRonic medical RecoRdS HelP you For decades medical records have consisted of reams of paper organized in shelf after shelf of file folders. You could easily have dozens of files across several facilities, from clinics to hospitals, and much of the information in them might not be shared. With the new system, you’ll have a single Franciscan medical record. All your Franciscan doctors and nurses will view and update it, so your entire team will have a complete, accurate picture of your care. “With EMR, when you see a specialist, like a cardiologist, your primary care doctor can access the specialist’s notes about your visit. After you have a lab test or X-ray, your doctor can pull up the results. Dean Field, MD If you need to go to the emergency room, the staff there can quickly find out what conditions you have and what medications you take,” explained Franciscan family doctor Dean Field, MD, a leader on the project.
mycHaRt PutS you in cHaRge MyChart is your tool to access your electronic medical record 24/7 and reach out to your Franciscan health care team when and where it’s convenient for you — using your computer, tablet or smartphone. With MyChart, you can: ■ View your medical chart, including summaries of your medical visits. ■ Review your current medications. ■ Securely send medical questions to your primary care provider. ■ Request prescription refills from your primary care provider. ■ View normal test results. (Your provider will call about abnormal results.) ■ Check scheduled appointments and pay bills. MyChart also helps you keep track of your entire family’s health records, appointments and more. If your children are under the age of 18, you can you can add their account to yours for easy management. Adults who care for their aging parents can also access their parents’ record with their permission.

Advanced medical care
close to home
To learn more about the high-tech services available in your area, visit FHShealth.org.
St. Joseph Medical Center’s highly trained specialists offer minimally invasive care If you have a serious condition that requires treatment, you don’t have to travel far to get the best care. With St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma, you can receive high-tech services in state-ofthe-art facilities right here where you live. Here are two great examples of how we continue to lead in health care innovation.
One-stop shop For cutting-edge vascular care St. Joseph Medical Center offers advanced care using minimally invasive techniques to treat complex vascular conditions. Only 10 to 15 years ago, patients with a condition such as peripheral vascular disease (PVD) — a blockage in your legs or feet — would undergo open Ramandeep surgery that required extensive hospital stays Sidhu, MD and long recovery. Now physicians can remove the blockage and restore blood flow using a procedure that requires one tiny incision. “We make a small hole, about 2 to 3 millimeters, near the groin and thread a narrow tube called a catheter to the problem area,” said Franciscan Vascular Associates board-certified vascular surgeon Ramandeep Sidhu, MD. Depending on the location and severity of the blockage, surgeons have several options for fixing it. They can do an angioplasty — inflating a tiny balloon at the end of the catheter to widen the blocked artery. They may implant a stent, a wire mesh tube to help keep the artery open. Or, surgeons may perform an atherectomy, which uses a special tool to shave away plaque that’s blocking blood flow through the artery. “These procedures are done on an outpatient basis under sedation so you’re awake, but don’t feel any pain, and you can return to your normal activities the next day,” Dr. Sidhu said. Dr. Sidhu also treats conditions such as thoracic aortic aneurysms — a widening in your aorta, the largest artery in your body — as well as aortic dissection, which can occur when the wall of the aorta tears or completely splits from major trauma. Previously, thoracic aortic treatments required a trip to Seattle. Now this care is available at St. Joseph. “We use minimally invasive techniques to treat all of these conditions and patients often go home within about two to three days,” Dr. Sidhu said. 8
Interventional radiology: Better imaging, better outcomes St. Joseph’s interventional radiology team provides minimally invasive procedures to treat a wide range of health conditions. “Interventional radiology uses real-time image-guided techniques to perform procedures safely Ryan through a tiny skin incision, using catheters Bredeweg, MD and wires,” said Ryan Bredeweg, MD, a boardcertified radiologist with fellowship training in interventional radiology. “Using these techniques results in minimal or no recovery time compared to invasive surgery.” One of the procedures Dr. Bredeweg performs is called ultrasound-accelerated thrombolysis, which is used to treat arterial or venous blood clots that can lead to life-threatening health problems. “Clot-busting medication has been used for years to dissolve blood clots, but when the medication is administered to the entire body, there is some risk of bleeding complications,” Dr. Bredeweg said. “With ultrasoundaccelerated thrombolysis, the medication is delivered directly into the clot via a catheter, which reduces this risk. Meanwhile, the catheter also emits low-frequency soundwaves proven to disperse the medication throughout the clot, dissolving it in a fraction of the time.” This is a safe and effective procedure which improves outcomes and returns patients home to their families sooner.

We call because we care Using technology to provide follow-up care, improved results Whether you’ve stayed at St. Joseph Medical Center a few days or visited our Emergency Department for 45 minutes, we continue to be an ally in your recovery. Within 48 hours of your discharge we call to check on you using CipherVoice, an automated follow-up call system backed by the skill and compassion of our physicians and nurses. This gives you an important opportunity to respond to a series of questions about your care once you’ve settled at home to recuperate. These automated calls help identify: ■ Your comfort level with medication instruction ■ If you’ve made any necessary follow-up appointments ■ How you felt about your visit If you have questions or report a service issue during the call, a nurse or physician personally calls you back.
inpatient and emergency department visits. “CipherVoice helps us bridge the gap between the hospital and home, and it lets people know that their Lori Pelland, RN care doesn’t end once they leave us,” said Lori Pelland, RN, clinical nurse manager, St. Joseph Medical Center. This new technology has greatly improved our follow-up rate, Pelland explained. Previously, we reached about 80 percent of our patients. “Now we reach nearly 100 percent.”

tracked and used to help make the great care available at Franciscan even better. Physicians and nurses get a chance to hear your perspective directly from you, and can adjust their care strategies accordingly. These calls are focused solely on helping us better serve and care for you. “I think patients appreciate that we call them back,” Pelland said. “There’s connection, and we have a lot of great follow-up discussions.”
keePing youR caRe in mind We began exploring the CipherVoice technology last year at St. Clare Hospital in Lakewood as a way to help people with heart failure stay on track with critical interventions — a low-salt diet, for example — that help keep them out of the hospital. The comprehensive pilot program contributed to reduced heart failure readmission rates. “Based on these great results, Franciscan is really pleased to extend CipherVoice services to all our inpatients and Emergency Department visitors and Jill Smith, RN expect to see similar rates of reduction in readmissions across the system,” said Jill Smith, RN, program administrator of Virtual Health Services at Franciscan. We are the region’s only health system providing this type of follow-up for all www.FHShealth.org

When surgery becomes necessary, you want to know you’re getting the best care possible. That’s why at St. Joseph Medical Center we offer a full range of advanced surgical options, including minimally invasive surgery. Small incisions, big benefits During minimally invasive surgery, sometimes tiny cameras are inserted into smaller incisions to help surgeons see into the surgical site with significantly greater magnification than the naked eye. Smaller incisions, which require surgeons to operate with slender, miniaturized tools, help minimize trauma to surrounding skin and muscle. This means post-surgical pain is can be reduced, hospital stays can be shorter, infection risk can be reduced, and recovery can be quicker. But when minimally invasive laparoscopy or robotic-assist surgery is an option — as it is at St. Joseph for everything from complex gynecologic surgeries to heart valve repair — these general benefits are only the beginning. Board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon Craig Hampton, MD, FACS, with Franciscan Cardiothoracic Surgery Associates at St. Joseph, always considers minimally invasive techniques Craig Hampton, for heart valve repairs and simple MD, FACS bypass procedures. “We use them when a patient’s physiology allows it because they get the same surgery they would via an open procedure without the same post-surgery physical restrictions,” he said. After standard open-heart surgery, driving and lifting are restricted for 4 to 6 weeks. “With minimally invasive techniques, however, people can use their arms right away,” Dr. Hampton said. “They can lift their grandkids. They can begin driving as soon as they’re off pain medication. These kinds of immeasurable benefits have a huge impact on quality of life and psychological well-being after surgery.”
Looking good Scarring is also minimized. “Women in particular appreciate the absence of open-
heart surgery’s long chest scars,” said Dr. Hampton. “In mitral valve repair, I can put a small incision just under the breast, where it won’t show even when a woman wears a bathing suit. Many individuals, particularly younger women, appreciate this clear cosmetic advantage, as long as the quality of the operation is not compromised.” Minimizing scarring and trauma are also compelling reasons board-certified gynecologist Julius Szigeti, MD, FACOG, with Women’s Health Associates at St. Joseph, favors Julius Szigeti, MD, minimally invasive techniques FACOG whenever possible. “In fact, for certain gynecologic procedures, we don’t even make an external incision. This type of surgery is one of the most-used minimally invasive techniques in gynecology.”
Robotic-assisted surgery For some procedures, including endometrial surgery and some complex hysterectomies, Dr. Szigeti uses the daVinci® robotic-assisted system. The daVinci® offers a true 3D visual image of internal organs. And, while traditional laparoscopy provides excellent results with tools that are straight, the daVinci® uses jointed instruments that move like the human wrist for increased dexterity. “You move the instruments with very minor hand and finger motions, allowing enhanced precision and accuracy,” he said. It’s important to note, Dr. Szigeti emphasized, that the “robot” in the case of the daVinci® system does not mean a robot is operating on you. “The daVinci can’t move without the surgeon. In essence, it is a very sophisticated remote control device that allows us to see better and manipulate instruments with greater ease in cases where its use is appropriate,” he said.

Where healthy meets delicious Experts at Franciscan Health System have developed the program “Healthy is Delicious: Eating a Mediterranean Diet” to show the community just how mouthwatering a healthy diet can be. During the past year, Franciscan Cancer Care’s Tricia Sinek, RD, has hosted the program two to three times at each of the Franciscan hospitals with great success. Along with a trained chef at each location, Sinek helps attendees better understand the features and benefits of a Mediterranean diet and how to make it a part of their lives. “The main feature of the Mediterranean diet is that it consists mostly of plants including fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts and seeds,” she said. “There’s very little red meat, some poultry and some wild fish. Countless studies show that eating this way helps reduce inflammation in the body, which lowers your risk of numerous diseases such as heart disease and diabetes, as well as death.”
eat Well, liVe Well Glori Schneider, a retired Franciscan employee, attended the Healthy is Delicious program earlier this year. “In the 20 years I worked at Franciscan it was the best program I ever attended,” she said. “Tricia made the diet and the foods seem so accessible.” The best part about learning about the Mediterranean diet, Schneider said, is that it doesn’t feel like any other diet she’s 12
ever tried. “It’s not a diet, it’s a lifestyle,” she said. “Unlike other diets, and I’ve tried them all, it doesn’t feel restrictive. I can have nuts and avocados! Now I’m learning to cook kale, Swiss chard and beets, which are all things I’d never had before. It’s been exciting for me to learn about and experiment with using different foods Tricia taught us about during the program.”

good HealtH StaRtS HeRe Franciscan’s commitment to helping community members eat better with a Mediterranean-style diet extends beyond the Healthy is Delicious program. “Each of our cafeterias feature REAL (Responsible Eating and Living) food options on the daily menu, which are healthy, locally-grown and nutrient-rich meals,” said Ron Hamakawa, regional director of Food and Nutrition Services at Franciscan. “These foods often fit within the Mediterranean diet and are prepared in heart-healthy ways.”

Take Advantage of Life-Saving Vascular Screening… Vascular disease is among the leading causes of death in the U.S. and millions of people may be at risk for stroke or death from vascular disease. However, many times there are no warning signs or symptoms until a potentially life-threatening event occurs. A quick, painless screening performed in our vascular lab can tell you if you are at risk for a serious vascular disease.
Carotid Artery Disease A carotid artery screen measures the blood flow and checks for narrowing or blockages of the vessels in your neck that can cause stroke.
Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) An AAA can cause death if it ruptures. Most people with AAA have no symptoms so this simple screening can be life saving.
Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) PAD can cause serious leg pain and may lead to amputation. This screening uses blood pressure measurements to check for narrowing or blockages in the leg arteries.
Patients will be sent their results by a board-certified vascular surgeon following their exam.
$60 per exam or $150 for all three* *Screening exams are not covered by insurance.
Call today to schedule a screening at a location near you:
