Your health online
Know the potential risks and limitations of searching for health information on the Web Does this sound familiar? You experience an unusual health symptom and a quick Internet search later you have pages of information about what might be wrong. When it comes to your health, the Internet must be used wisely. Knowing the risks and limitations of what you find can improve your well-being and keep you in the driver’s seat of your health.
SearcH Smartly “I discourage patients from using the Internet to self-diagnose,” said Pierre Dalumpines, MD, a specialist in family Pierre medicine at Franciscan Dalumpines, MD Medical Clinic on Canyon Road. “Even if it’s a reputable website, there’s so much to take into consideration about your personal health and medical history that an Internet search can never do.” Try to avoid the Internet for self-treatment without talking to your doctor first.
looking for reliable health information on the Web or need to find a doctor? visit FHShealth.org today!
If you cannot resist the temptation to research your symptoms online, “Always discuss what you’ve found on the Internet with your doctor,” Dr. Dalumpines said. Your physician can address all of your questions and concerns and explain why something you found may be inaccurate or inappropriate for your particular situation.

■
tHe uPSide of internet reSearcH There are times when the Internet can be really helpful. “I think of the Internet as a great resource when you already have a diagnosis because it can help you take even better care of yourself,” Dr. Dalumpines said. If you have a chronic condition such as diabetes or congestive heart failure, the Internet can help you follow through with diet and lifestyle changes your physician recommends. When searching for medical information to help you stay well, here are some guidelines and reliable sources:

FHShealth.org offers reliable information and tools including the Franciscan Symptom Navigator and our online Health Library to research health conditions and assess health symptoms you’re experiencing. We also have the HealthAware tool to assess and manage your risk of various diseases such as heart attack and stroke. Websites that end in “.gov” are government-sponsored. For example, CDC.gov has information about infectious and communicable diseases, immunizations and more. THE REGION’S LEADER IN TREATMENT WITHOUT TRANSFUSION For a variety of reasons, religious as well as health-related, many patients wish to avoid blood transfusion when undergoing medical treatment. For more than 14 years, we have led the region in meeting this specialized need. Since 1999, Franciscan Transfusion-Free Medicine and Surgery Program (TMSP) has helped patients get the care they require without the need for transfused blood. “We’re the patient’s advocate,” said Jarrell Fox, regional manager of TMSP. “We’re very hands-on in optimizing patients for surgery and making sure their wishes are met.” TMSP serves over 4,500 patients each year, including 600 surgeries. Initially the program was founded to serve those seeking transfusion-free treatment on religious grounds. However, more and more patients simply wish to avoid associated health risks of donated blood, such as allergic reactions, antibody development, abnormal blood clotting, infections, immune suppres-
sion and kidney failure. The most serious infections include hepatitis and HIV/AIDS. “Many of our patients work in health care and just want to eliminate unnecessary risks,” said Fox. The first step for patients is a consultation with a nurse specialist to determine under what, if any, conditions that donated blood may be used. All pre-treatment issues, such as anemia, are addressed to minimize risk of complications. When requested, patients are referred to one of our physicians experienced in providing this specialized care. A TMSP team member stays involved throughout treatment, making sure the patient desires are addressed. In cases of emergency, a nurse specialist is on-call 24 hours a day, ready to meet with doctors to facilitate transfusion-free care. We feature state-of-the-art equipment and highly skilled surgeons and staff, enabling patients to receive safe, effective non-emergency treatment without the need for donated blood.
NO BLOOD
Transfusion-free technologies and techniques include: ■ Cauterizing surgical instruments, instead of traditional scalpels ■ Medication to increase production of red blood cells and encourage clotting ■ Devices that filter and return your blood ■ Blood-dilution therapies ■ Techniques to lower blood pressure and body temperature ■ Laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgical techniques If you’re seeking transfusion-free treatment or wish to plan ahead in case of emergency admission, contact TMSP today. Student Photography Exhibit Eleven students from Lakes High School in Lakewood will have their photography work showcased in a new exhibit at St. Clare Hospital. The students are part of teacher Scott Waeschle’s beginning photography class. Students submitted photos which were then submitted to St. Clare staff to choose the final photos for the exhibit. “We are delighted to be able to showcase these creative works by our high school students,” said Kathy Bressler, President of St. Clare Hospital. “At St. Clare we are committed to celebrating our youth and the positive impact they have in our community.” The photos will be on display throughout the rest of 2013.
The carol milgard Breast center is excited to be the first in pierce county to offer 3d mammography — a revolutionary technology in the fight against breast cancer — which has demonstrated a 10 to 30 percent increase in overall breast cancer detection (over 2d imaging alone). 3d mammography complements standard 2d mammography. no additional breast compression is required and it only takes a few more seconds. The experience will be very similar to mammograms women have had in the past, and patients will receive the 3d portion at no additional cost. The carol milgard Breast center, located in Tacoma, is a partnership among franciscan health system, multicare health system and Tra Imaging serving the greater Tacoma area and surrounding communities. franciscan will also be installing 3d technology at its mammography centers in federal Way, enumclaw and gig harbor. To schedule your annual mammogram, call (253) 759-2622. Learn more about 3D at www.carolmilgard3d.org.

is just a click away In June 2013 Franciscan Health System began rolling out our new electronic medical record (EMR) system at primary care clinics. The system launches at St. Clare Hospital in August as well as St. Anthony, St. Francis and St. Joseph. It will be live at all Franciscan primary and specialty care clinics by the end of 2013. A special feature called MyChart gives you secure 24/7 online access to your medical charts, including summaries of office visits. It also offers you features such as secure messaging to send questions to your doctors and the ability to view upcoming appointments, pay bills and more.
HoW electronic medical recordS HelP you For decades medical records have consisted of reams of paper organized in shelf after shelf of file folders. You could easily have dozens of files across several facilities, from clinics to hospitals, and much of the information in them might not be shared. With the new system, you’ll have a single Franciscan medical record. All your Franciscan doctors and nurses will view and update it, so your entire team will have a complete, accurate picture of your care. “With EMR, when you see a specialist, like a cardiologist, your primary care doctor can access the specialist’s notes about your visit. After you have a lab test or X-ray, your doctor can pull up the results. Dean Field, MD If you need to go to the emergency room, the staff there can quickly find out what conditions you have and what medications you take,” explained Franciscan family doctor Dean Field, MD, a leader on the project.
mycHart PutS you in cHarge MyChart is your tool to access your electronic medical record 24/7 and reach out to your Franciscan health care team when and where it’s convenient for you — using your computer, tablet or smartphone. With MyChart, you can: ■ View your medical chart, including summaries of your medical visits. ■ Review your current medications. ■ Securely send medical questions to your primary care provider. ■ Request prescription refills from your primary care provider. ■ View normal test results. (Your provider will call about abnormal results.) ■ Check scheduled appointments and pay bills. MyChart also helps you keep track of your entire family’s health records, appointments and more. If your children are under the age of 18, you can you can add their account to yours for easy management. Adults who care for their aging parents can also access their parents’ records with their permission.

Advanced medical care close to home St. Clare’s highly trained specialists offer minimally invasive care If you have a serious condition that requires treatment, you don’t have to travel far to get the best care. With St. Clare Hospital in Lakewood, you can receive high-tech services in state-of-the-art facilities right here where you live. Here are two great examples of how we continue to lead the way in health care innovation.
To learn more about the high-tech services available in your area, visit FHShealth.org.
One-stop shop for cutting edge vascular care
Interventional radiology: Better imaging, better outcomes
Franciscan Vascular Lab at St. Clare provides sophisticated testing and convenient care for many vascular conditions. “In our vascular lab, we use a Doppler ultrasound to measure the blood flow through a blood vessel which allows us to diagnose vascular Omar Dorzi, MD problems,” said Omar Dorzi, MD, board-certified in general and vascular surgery with fellowship training in interventional radiology. After diagnosis, within the same visit, your vascular surgeon can typically develop a treatment plan and even schedule a procedure to treat your condition. This provides you with a seamless and convenient experience. One of the high-tech vascular treatments Dr. Dorzi performs is a procedure called atherectomy. If you have a blockage in an artery due to peripheral artery disease (PAD), atherectomy may help. It’s used to treat blockages in arteries that are close to a joint such as the groin or behind the knee. Instead of placing a stent that could break, atherectomy uses a special tool to shave away plaque that’s blocking blood flow through the artery.
St. Clare’s interventional radiology team provides minimally invasive procedures to treat a wide range of health conditions. “With interventional radiology, we use image-guided technology such as X-ray, ultrasound, CT or Richard Tobin, MD MRI while doing procedures so we can see inside the body while operating through a tiny incision,” said Richard Tobin, MD, a board-certified radiologist with fellowship training in interventional radiology. One of the procedures Dr. Tobin performs is called vertebral augmentation (often known as kyphoplasty or vertebroplasty). This treats compression fractures in the spine. During the outpatient procedure, he inserts one or two needles into the broken bone and injects medical cement to stabilize the fracture. “It’s one of the most gratifying procedures we do because it has a very high success rate for relieving pain,” Dr. Tobin said. “Most of the patients who receive this treatment are in a lot of pain that’s limiting their lifestyle and they’re not able to go about activities of daily living.” Patients often feel relief immediately, which greatly improves their quality of life.

We call because we care Using technology to provide follow-up care, improved results Whether you’ve stayed at St. Clare Hospital for a few days or visited our Emergency Department for 45 minutes, we continue to be an ally in your recovery. Within 48 hours of your discharge we call to check on you using CipherVoice, an automated follow-up call system backed by the skill and compassion of our physicians and nurses. This gives you an important opportunity to respond to a series of questions about your care once you’ve settled at home to recuperate. These automated calls help identify: ■ Your comfort level with medication instruction ■ If you’ve made any necessary followup appointments ■ How you felt about your visit If you have questions or report a service issue during the call, a nurse or physician personally calls you back.
and Emergency Department visitors and expect to see similar rates of reduction in readmissions across the system,” said Jill Smith, RN, program Jill Smith, RN administrator of Virtual Health Services at Franciscan.
focuSed on your recoVery While calls aren’t directly tied to official patient satisfaction scores, responses are tracked and used to help make the great care available at Franciscan even better, said St. Clare Clinical Manager Maylynn
To learn more about how st. clare is leading the way in caring for our community, go to FHShealth.org/StClare.
Bennett, RN. These calls are focused solely on helping us better serve and care for you. “Physicians and nurses get a chance to hear a patient’s perspective directly from the patient,” she said. “Sometimes, patients just want to tell us how great their care was,” Bennett said. “That’s always wonderful to hear.”
keePing your care in mind We are the region’s only health system providing this type of follow-up for all inpatient and Emergency Department visits in the region. “It ensures Tim Plante, RN we’re positioning our patients’ health in the forefront even after they’ve left our facilities,” said Tim Plante, RN, associate vice president of Patient Care Services. We began exploring the CipherVoice technology last year at St. Clare as a way to help people with heart failure stay on track with critical interventions — a low-salt diet, for example — that help keep them out of the hospital. The comprehensive pilot program contributed to reduced heart failure readmission rates. “Based on these great results, Franciscan is really pleased to extend CipherVoice services to all our inpatients www.FHShealth.org

When surgery becomes necessary, you want to know you’re getting the best care possible. That’s why St. Clare Hospital offers a full range of advanced surgical options, including minimally invasive surgery. Smaller incisions, big benefits During minimally invasive surgery, tiny cameras inserted into smaller incisions help surgeons see into the surgical site with significantly greater magnification than the naked eye. These small incisions, through which surgeons operate with slender, miniaturized tools, help minimize trauma to surrounding skin and muscle. This means post-surgical pain is generally lessened, hospital stays are shorter, infection risk is reduced, and recovery is quicker. But when minimally invasive procedures including arthroscopy and laparoscopy are an option — as they are at St. Clare for everything from hip replacement to gallbladder surgery — these general benefits are only the beginning.
Minimized trauma, excellent results “At Franciscan, our goal is always to try to figure out how to give patients excellent results in a less invasive Joshua way to minimize trauma Johnston, MD to the body,” said boardcertified orthopedic surgeon Joshua Johnston, MD, with Franciscan Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Associates. For Dr. Johnston, this includes performing a relatively new type of less-invasive hip replacement through a smaller incision made in front of the hip joint, rather than on the side. Dr. Johnston explained this front-facing, or anterior, incision is less invasive because it is made through a natural interval between major muscles. Because no major muscles are severed, you have no movement restrictions after surgery. “This usually translates to more accelerated rehabilitation and faster recovery. People
are out of the hospital, back to work and driving earlier,” Dr. Johnston said. Dr. Johnston is one of a handful of surgeons in the South Sound region trained to perform this type of surgery. “I do a significant number of hip replacements using the anterior (front rather than the side of the hip) approach, and we are seeing excellent results,” he said.
Making a difference for you Tom Lin, MD, MPH, general surgeon with Franciscan Surgical Associates in Lakewood, said less Tom Lin, MD, MPH trauma to the body is why it’s important for Franciscan physicians to continue seeking out effective minimally invasive options like breastconserving cancer surgery and minimally invasive thyroid procedures. He also noted minimally invasive approaches may not be appropriate for every procedure. “When looking at something like gallbladder surgery, smaller incisions and less tissue manipulation inside the abdomen definitely make a difference in post-surgical pain and recovery time,” said Dr. Lin. “If we can get the same results without causing undue complication risks, using minimally invasive surgical procedures makes good sense.” Safety, Dr. Lin noted, is the first priority for every surgical procedure performed at St. Clare, whether that procedure is the latest proven minimally invasive technique or a tried-and-true open approach. “The team in the operating room is great. We work together well: Everyone — from the anesthesiologist to the scrub nurse to the surgeon — is getting things done properly and putting patient safety first,” he said.

Tricia Sinek, RD, left, helped attendees like Glori Schneider, right, learn the basics of the Mediterranean diet during her program, “Healthy is Delicious: Eating a Mediterranean Diet.”
Where healthy meeTs delicious Experts at Franciscan Health System have developed the program “Healthy is Delicious: Eating a Mediterranean Diet” to show the community just how mouthwatering a healthy diet can be. During the past year, Franciscan Cancer Care’s Tricia Sinek, RD, has hosted the program two to three times at each of the Franciscan hospitals with great success. Along with a trained chef at each location, Sinek helps attendees better understand the features and benefits of a Mediterranean diet and how to make it a part of their lives. “The main feature of the Mediterranean diet is that it consists mostly of plants including fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts and seeds,” she said. “There’s very little red meat, some poultry and some wild fish. Countless studies show that eating this way helps reduce inflammation in the body, which lowers your risk of numerous diseases such as heart disease and diabetes, as well as death.”
eat Well, liVe Well Glori Schneider, a retired Franciscan employee, attended the Healthy is Delicious program earlier this year. “In the 20 years I worked at Franciscan it was the best program I ever attended,” she said. “Tricia made the diet and the foods seem so accessible.” The best part about learning about the Mediterranean diet, Schneider said, is that it doesn’t feel like any other diet she’s 12

ever tried. “It’s not a diet, it’s a lifestyle,” she said. “Unlike other diets, and I’ve tried them all, it doesn’t feel restrictive. I can have nuts and avocados! Now I’m learning to cook kale, Swiss chard and beets, which are all things I’d never had before. It’s been exciting for me to learn about and experiment with using different foods Tricia taught us about during the program.”

good HealtH StartS Here Franciscan’s commitment to helping community members eat better with a Mediterranean-style diet extends beyond the Healthy is Delicious program. “Each of our cafeterias feature REAL (Responsible Eating and Living) food options on the daily menu, which are healthy, locally-grown and nutrient-rich meals,” said Ron Hamakawa, regional director of Food and Nutrition Services at Franciscan. “These foods often fit within the Mediterranean diet and are prepared in heart-healthy ways.”

Take Advantage of Life-Saving Vascular Screening… Vascular disease is among the leading causes of death in the U.S. and millions of people may be at risk for stroke or death from vascular disease. However, many times there are no warning signs or symptoms until a potentially life-threatening event occurs. A quick, painless screening performed in our vascular lab can tell you if you are at risk for a serious vascular disease.
Carotid Artery Disease A carotid artery screen measures the blood flow and checks for narrowing or blockages of the vessels in your neck that can cause stroke.
Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) An AAA can cause death if it ruptures. Most people with AAA have no symptoms so this simple screening can be life saving.
Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) PAD can cause serious leg pain and may lead to amputation. This screening uses blood pressure measurements to check for narrowing or blockages in the leg arteries.
Patients will be sent their results by a board-certified vascular surgeon following their exam.
$60 per exam or $150 for all three* *Screening exams are not covered by insurance.
Call today to schedule a screening at a location near you:
