Primary care
Franciscan: A name you can trust Franciscan Primary Care clinics get new name When a facility has the name Franciscan you know you will receive the compassionate expert care you expect. This is why Franciscan Janis Fegley, DO Medical Group, a part of Franciscan Health System, recently made a name change to all of its primary care clinics, including family medicine, internal medicine and pediatric clinics. All 15 primary care clinics became Franciscan Medical Clinic in July, said Janis Fegley, DO, Franciscan Medical Group primary care division chief. “Having a common name links us,” she said.“We did a comprehensive brand study in the community and found that our patients didn’t realize that, in many cases,
Great care in your area: Franciscan Medical Clinic on Canyon Road Formerly Franciscan Family Medicine – Canyon Road (253) 539-4200
our clinics were part of the Franciscan family. Patients told us that this was important to them and helps them identify that they have access to a complete range of high-quality health care services. Naming is one way to show that connection.” Franciscan Medical Group offers patients a network of doctors and professional providers, in more than 100 clinics, who specialize in a variety of medical fields including heart and vascular, weight loss surgery, women’s health, neurology, orthopedics and sports medicine.Yet, it is family medicine, internal medicine and pediatrics that are typically the front door into the extensive offerings Franciscan provides. “Your primary health care provider is usually the person who will refer you to
a specialist for care,” Dr. Fegley said. Primary care physicians and providers focus on preventive medicine, treating chronic diseases such as diabetes, providing care for the flu, cuts, scrapes and annual wellness exams, as well as helping patients get the right care at the right time. “With primary care clinics located across the South Sound we wanted to make them more prominent and identifiable,” she said, adding, “Being Franciscan Medical Clinic makes it easier for patients to find us and access the resources they need in their community.”

Helping hearts
giving you better care
Franciscan offers state-of-the-art treatments for heart rhythm disorders
Franciscan Health System is making it easier to get exceptional care for your heart by bringing our specialists together into the following practices:
Your heart is a pump. And like many mechanical pumps, it runs on electricity. The atria, or heart’s upper chambers, are where the electrical impulses that stimulate your heart’s pumping action begin, explained Franciscan Heart & Vascular Associates cardiac electrophysiologist Amrit Guptan, MD, FACC, FHRS. The lower chambers — the ventricles — pick up the signal and do the pumping. Too many or too few electrical signals can be dangerous, said Dr. Guptan. “With too few, your heartbeat slows. On the other hand, too many, or an ‘electrical storm’ of signals, may cause your heart to stop; a condition called cardiac arrest or sudden death,” he said, stressing the importance of seeing your doctor if unusual symptoms occur.
Franciscan Heart & Vascular Associates Franciscan Cardiology Associates have joined the Franciscan Heart & Vascular Associates in order to provide more convenient care in Tacoma, Gig Harbor and Federal Way. Franciscan Vascular Associates Northwest Vascular Center in Federal Way and Auburn will become Franciscan Vascular Associates which provide services in Tacoma, Gig Harbor, Federal Way, Auburn, Lakewood and lab services in Enumclaw. Franciscan Cardiothoracic Surgery Associates St. Joseph Cardiothoracic Surgeons will become Franciscan Cardiothoracic Surgery Associates. Franciscan offers a full array of board-certified cardiologists and heart, lung and vascular surgical specialists who provide the quality of care that our patients expect. From prevention and testing to diagnosis and surgery, our physicians are the leaders in cardiac care throughout the South Sound.

Unique treatment capabilities
Franciscan offers the latest heart rhythm disorder treatments including advanced cardiac ablative therapies. Typically minimally invasive, ablation involves inserting a catheter into the heart through a needle puncture and using either hot or cold energy to eliminate the abnormal electrical firing. “This procedure in most instances is essentially curative. Patients require no medication afterwards,” said Dr. Guptan. Cryoablation is a newer procedure using extreme cold which is a safer, better tolerated, state-of-the-art treatment now available to our patients at St. Joseph Medical Center.

In the news
New partnership to bring Franciscan and PeaceHealth together In August, plans were announced for Franciscan Health System to become part of a new, larger health system through a partnership between our parent organization Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) and Vancouver, Wash.-based PeaceHealth. The partnership will enable Franciscan and PeaceHealth to improve access to services, increase the quality of care
and reduce costs. Both Franciscan and PeaceHealth share similar missions and values. The integrated health system will combine seven CHI hospitals in Washington and Oregon (including all of Franciscan’s hospitals and programs) with nine PeaceHealth hospitals in Washington, Oregon and Alaska. The new organization will blend together over time and will
include nearly 26,000 employees and about 950 employed physicians. Recently Franciscan and Burien’s Highline Medical Center also announced a possible affiliation. Over the next several months Franciscan and Highline will continue to evaluate the benefits of an alliance. For up-to-date information on this exciting news visit www.FHShealth.org.
September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month! The walnut-sized prostate, which encircles a man’s urethra, can cause big problems — like prostate cancer. But the United States Preventive John Bak, MD Services Task Force has called routine prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening into question because of risks associated with unnecessary cancer treatment, such as incontinence and impotence. However, other health-care organizations, including the American Cancer Society, still support PSA testing.
Should you get a PSA test?
Franciscan Medical Group urologist John Bak, MD, encourages PSA screening for men ages 50 or older. Men ages 45 and older should be screened if they are African-American or prostate cancer runs in their family. “Mortality has declined since we’ve been screening PSA. So it’s still an important test,” said Dr. Bak with Franciscan Urology Associates. “Plus we’ve become savvier about when to treat, and when to wait and see if it progresses. Watchful waiting, plus Franciscan’s state-of-the-art treatment capabilities, means we’re seeing

significantly fewer treatment-related side effects.” Signs of prostate trouble
Be sure to schedule screening right away if you notice any of these potential warning signs: • Trouble urinating • Frequent or interrupted urination • Blood or pain while urinating or ejaculating • Chronic pain in the back, hips or pelvis These symptoms can signal less urgent prostate problems, but should still prompt a call to your doctor. If treatment is needed, Franciscan’s leading-edge treatments help save lives and preserve continence and sexual function. These include nerve-sparing, minimally invasive surgical removal of the prostate, often using a robotic-assisted technique, as well as radioactive “seed” implantation and external radiation therapy to help shrink tumors and kill cancer cells. Cryotherapy, a technique that freezes prostate tissue, is also available.

Weight loss
Robotic-assisted weight loss surgery comes to the South Puget Sound Recent research has shown bariatric (weight loss) surgery not only reduces unhealthy excess weight, it can also reverse medical conditions such as type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. Now, Franciscan Center for Weight Management located at St. Francis Hospital is offering a new option: robotic-assisted bariatric surgery. It’s a minimally invasive technique, performed by a board-certified surgeon, who uses the daVinci® Surgical System.
Troy Houseworth, MD
A cut above
“Robotic-assisted bariatric surgery allows us to perform better, more precise procedures for patients,” said Troy Houseworth, MD, a board-certified general surgeon specializing in bariatric surgery at St. Francis Hospital. That’s because the system is equipped with a hi-def, 3D camera that offers surgeons a more detailed view of the area they’re operating on than any other minimally invasive procedure. What’s more, the robot’s instruments have even greater range of motion than the human wrist — they can rotate 360 degrees inside the patient’s body. “This allows us to be even more accurate with our movements,” added Dr. Houseworth.
A variety of options
Surgeons currently can perform roboticassisted bariatric surgery for sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass — two different bariatric procedures that reduce the size of the stomach so you feel full on less food. People who’ve had bariatric surgery in the past and require a surgical revision may also be candidates for robotic-assisted surgery. “At Franciscan we offer bariatric surgery patients a variety of different procedures, including robotic-assisted surgery,” said Dr. Houseworth. “Your surgeon will help you determine which is best for your body, health and lifestyle.”

Patient Family Advisory Council
leads to fresh perspective, improved care Looking at the care we provide — through our patients’ eyes — helps us see our processes and behaviors in a new light, and fosters creative solutions that may not have occurred to us without their help.

Kathleen Plato, Patient Family Advisory Council member
In the fast-paced world of health care, we strive to stay mindful of how our care looks and feels to patients and their families. That’s why St. Clare Hospital and Franciscan Medical Group formed the Patient Family Advisory Council (PFAC) to provide an ongoing and fresh perspective on what it’s like to be a patient in our care. The Council invites past patients and family to share their impressions directly with hospital and clinic staff at all levels. Together, they identify issues and find solutions to directly improve quality and the patient experience. When she retired and moved to Lakewood, Kathleen
Plato wanted to establish care with a physician close to home. She attended St. Clare’s health talks and was pleased to be able to meet doctors and ask questions. “You never get an opportunity like that,” she said. Kathleen settled on a Franciscan Medical Group doctor, and joined the Council. “I’ve never even been a hospital patient,” she confessed. Council members shared their experiences and suggestions from the patient, family and clinic point of view. They toured the hospital and gave feedback, focusing on communication at all levels and a peer-led process for improvement. Kathleen, a former resource

and grants development manager, appreciated the fact that the Council was asked for suggestions on improving both the hospital and clinic experience. “We asked, ‘What are the connections that need to be made for a patient, from the time they walk in the door until after they are back home?’” she said. At the hospital, the Council learned noises at night are an issue, and discussed ways to silence doors and reduce chatter in common areas.“We looked at what is less than ideal and what could be improved. How can it be a little quieter, a little friendlier, a little more professional,” said Kathleen.

Breast health
Get screened for breast cancer—
it can save your life! One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. So you may be wondering what you can do to stay cancer-free. One of the most important things you can do is get screened. “If you develop breast cancer, the earlier it’s detected, the easier it is to treat,” said Steven Duras, MD, a surgeon with Franciscan Surgical Associates - Lakewood. The American Cancer Society (ACS) recommends annual mammograms starting at age 40. If you have a family history of the disease or other risk factors, Make an your doctor may appointment for your suggest starting mammogram today! mammograms Carol Milgard earlier. The ACS Breast Center also recommends (253) 759-2622 clinical breast exams every three years for women in their 20s and 30s and annually for women ages 40 and older. Putting patients first
“At St. Clare Hospital, we’re fortunate to be affiliated with the Carol Milgard Breast Center in Tacoma, which offers the latest and most comprehensive technology for screening and diagnosing breast cancer,” Dr. Duras said. In 2009, Franciscan partnered with another local health care system to open the compassionate and comfortable center that offers: • Digital screening and diagnostic mammography • Breast ultrasound • Breast MRI • Breast biopsy Every patient and every lump is different, so the diagnostic tests a person receives may vary, Dr. Duras added. If patients’ tests come back positive for breast cancer, Susan Nixon, RN, breast cancer nurse navigator at Franciscan, calls them soon after 8

they receive the diagnosis. “They’re always so thankful for that phone call,” she said. As a nurse navigator, Susan guides patients through the next steps in their breast cancer treatment plan so they can learn what to expect.“They often feel overwhelmed and afraid, and I try to alleviate a lot of their fears,” she said.“I try to answer all of their questions so they can make informed decisions about their care. I also identify any additional needs patients may have and guide them to resources that can help, such as working with a social worker or arranging transportation.” Susan is also there with many patients before they undergo surgery.“Sometimes seeing a familiar face or hearing a familiar voice can make them feel like everything is going to be OK.” Seamless and supportive care
Franciscan surgeons perform different surgical procedures for treating cancer depending on the individual’s situation, including lumpectomy (removing the tumor and some tissue around it) or mastectomy (removing the entire breast). “We work alongside plastic surgeons who reconstruct the breast either during the same procedure or in a later one for better cosmetic outcomes,” said Dr. Duras. Hope and support for lung cancer patients At Franciscan Health System, no patient faces a lung cancer diagnosis alone. We offer cancer nurse navigators, support Debbie Hellers, programs, a lung nodule RN, BSN, OCN clinic and online tools to help patients who are concerned about lung cancer. Cancer nurse navigator Debbie Hellers, RN, BSN, OCN, works closely with patients, families and a multi-disciplinary care team. Because every patient is different, she customizes her approach for each individual. Debbie can help patients understand medical terminology about diagnosis and treatment. To ease fear and anxiety, she
can accompany you as an advocate to office visits and treatment sessions. She can help find transportation to treatments, support groups, nutrition support, social workers and more. Debbie also listens to concerns and helps find ways to address them. “I can provide you with reliable websites or other supportive information and resources,” she said.

Prestigious award given to Franciscan surgeon Franciscan Health System’s chest and lung surgeon, Baiya Krishnadasan, MD, FACS, and St. Joseph Medical Center were recently designated a daVinci® Surgeon/Site Thoracic Epicenter for robotic surgery. Dr. Krishnadasan and St. Joseph are only the third thoracic surgeon/site in the United States — and the only one in the West — to earn this distinction. Dr. Krishnadasan, medical director of thoracic surgery for St. Joseph Cardiothoracic Surgeons in Tacoma, is commended for his highly advanced skills while performing complex, minimally invasive surgeries using the daVinci® robot, primarily for patients with lung cancer. “Dr. Krishnadasan has really changed the playing field for thoracic oncology in the Pierce County area,” said Medical Director of Oncology Frank Senecal, MD, FACP, MBA. “His focus on the patient, by bringing all the crucial 10
specialties and support staff together for the individual patient, has done a great deal to optimize care and outcomes. His technical expertise in robotics is now being recognized and fortunately will allow many physicians and patients to benefit from his experience,” added Dr. Senecal. “I am grateful to have such a colleague in our oncology program.” As part of the Epicenter designation, Dr. Krishnadasan teaches thoracic surgeons from hospitals around the country to use the robot during chest and lung surgeries. He also sees patients from all over the west coast who are in need of his advanced surgical skills. More than 2,500 patients have had robotic surgery at St. Joseph Medical Center, a minimally invasive technique that often means patients experience less pain, less blood loss, a smaller incision and quicker healing than with traditional open surgery.

Q
Why do you recommend attending a class prior to surgery, and how does it help campers be more successful in their recovery? Fear of the unknown can certainly affect your attitude and behavior after a total joint replacement. The Total Joint pre-op class answers many of the questions you might have about the surgery and about the therapy you will participate in after your surgery.
A
Q
What do you believe are the benefits of group therapy, and how does this set our Joint Camp program apart from other programs? When a group of total joint campers get together, they not only interact socially, but they also learn from each other. When you feel discouraged because your progress doesn’t meet your expectations, it’s great to observe your fellow campers overcome difficulties — and you learn new techniques and strategies. Our Joint Camp therapists treat each Joint Camper as an individual with individual strengths, weaknesses and needs.
