Your heart is a pump. And like many mechanical pumps, it runs on electricity.

The atria, or heart’s upper chambers, are where the electrical impulses that stimulate your heart’s pumping action begin, explained Franciscan Heart & Vascular Associates cardiac electrophysiologist Amrit Guptan, MD, FACC, FHRS. The lower chambers — the ventricles — pick up the signal and do the pumping.

Too many or too few electrical signals can be dangerous, said Dr. Guptan. “With too few, your heartbeat slows. On the other hand, too many, or an ‘electrical storm’ of signals, may cause your heart to stop; a condition called cardiac arrest or sudden death,” he said, stressing the importance of seeing your doctor if unusual symptoms occur.

Franciscan offers the latest heart rhythm disorder treatments including advanced cardiac ablative therapies. Typically minimally invasive, ablation involves inserting a catheter into the heart through a needle puncture and using either hot or cold energy to eliminate the abnormal electrical firing. “This procedure in most instances is essentially curative. Patients require no medication afterwards,” said Dr. Guptan.

In the news

New partnership to bring Franciscan and PeaceHealth together In August, plans were announced for Franciscan Health System to become part of a new, larger health system through a partnership between our parent organization Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) and Vancouver, Wash.-based PeaceHealth.

The partnership will enable Franciscan and PeaceHealth to improve access to services, increase the quality of care

and reduce costs. Both Franciscan and PeaceHealth share similar missions and values.

The integrated health system will combine seven CHI hospitals in Washington and Oregon (including all of Franciscan’s hospitals and programs) with nine PeaceHealth hospitals in Washington, Oregon and Alaska. The new organization will blend together over time and will

include nearly 26,000 employees and about 950 employed physicians.

Recently Franciscan and Burien’s Highline Medical Center also announced a possible affiliation. Over the next several months Franciscan and Highline will continue to evaluate the benefits of an alliance.

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month!

The walnut-sized prostate, which encircles a man’s urethra (tube connecting to the urinary bladder), can cause big problems — like prostate cancer.

Christopher But the United States Arroyo, MD Preventive Services Task Force has called routine prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening into question because of risks associated with unnecessary cancer treatment, such as incontinence and impotence. However, other health care organizations, including the American Cancer Society, still support PSA testing.

“Screening — including a PSA test and rectal exam — is the only way we have to detect prostate cancer before it’s symptomatic, which is when it’s most curable,” said Dr. Arroyo. “Today, we offer so many effective treatment options at the early stages of the disease.We’ve seen a significant reduction in deaths from prostate cancer since PSA screening began.”

cancer. Men who have trouble urinating, blood in their urine or semen, pain with ejaculation or chronic back, hip or pelvis pain may also be at higher risk.

Comprehensive care

If a patient’s PSA test results show signs of cancer, Dr. Arroyo and other Franciscan physicians take several steps before pursuing treatment. “If PSA is elevated, we’ll run more tests that help us more accurately determine if cancer may be present before biopsy,” he said. “Even if it is cancer, in many men, it is slow-growing.

We’re more likely to watch and wait.We will only take action to treat the cancer if we’re seeing significant changes.”

Robotic-assisted weight loss surgery comes to the South Puget Sound Recent research has shown bariatric (weight loss) surgery not only reduces unhealthy excess weight, it can also reverse medical conditions such as type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure.

“Robotic-assisted bariatric surgery allows us to perform better, more precise procedures for patients,” said Troy Houseworth, MD, a board-certified general surgeon specializing in bariatric surgery at St. Francis Hospital. That’s because the system is equipped with a hi-def, 3D camera that offers surgeons a more detailed view of the area they’re operating on than any other minimally invasive procedure.

What’s more, the robot’s instruments have even greater range of motion than the human wrist — they can rotate 360 degrees inside the patient’s body.

Surgeons currently can perform roboticassisted bariatric surgery for sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass — two different bariatric procedures that reduce the size of the stomach so you feel full on less food. leads to fresh perspective, improved care Looking at the care we provide — through our patients’ eyes — helps us see our processes and behaviors in a new light, and fosters creative solutions that may not have occurred to us without their help.

In the fast-paced world of health care, we strive to stay mindful of how our care looks and feels to patients and their families. That’s why St. Elizabeth Hospital and Franciscan Medical Group formed the Patient Family Advisory Council (PFAC) to provide an ongoing and fresh perspective on what it’s like to be a patient in our care.

The Council invites past patients and family to share their impressions directly with hospital and clinic leadership. Members include patients and family members from the community, and Franciscan staff at all levels.

Shelley Hall got to know the hospital intimately when her daughter called from college to say she was sick — and getting worse. A single mother, Shelley drove to Central Washington University and brought her home, only to rush her to the emergency department days later, in terrible pain and barely conscious. Her systems were shutting down, fast. She was ultimately diagnosed with spinal meningitis.Today, she is happily planning her wedding.“They took such good care of her,” Shelley said.“And they did everything they could to help me be okay, too.They saved her life.” Shelley joined the Council as a way to give back.

Shelley and other Council members have toured the hospital and clinics and provided feedback on what they saw, heard and felt. They worked on improving signage and way-finding. They served as a sounding board for leadership on patient-directed information about health and safety in the hospital.

They are now beginning a patient story capture project.

A program director for ACAP Child and Family Services, Shelley recently completed training to become a hospital volunteer, a requirement for entering patient rooms for the new project.

“It’s great to be part of this collaborative effort and to see the commitment at the table,”

Shelley said. “Not all feedback is positive. It’s give and take, but together we’re improving communication for all involved — patients, doctors, family members and the community.”

Prestigious award given to Franciscan surgeon Franciscan Health System’s chest and lung surgeon, Baiya Krishnadasan, MD, FACS, and St. Joseph Medical Center were recently designated a daVinci® Surgeon/Site Thoracic Epicenter for robotic surgery.

Dr. Krishnadasan and St. Joseph are only the third thoracic surgeon/site in the United States — and the only one in the West — to earn this distinction.

Dr. Krishnadasan, medical director of thoracic surgery for St. Joseph Cardiothoracic Surgeons in Tacoma, is commended for his highly advanced skills while performing complex, minimally invasive surgeries using the daVinci® robot, primarily for patients with lung cancer.

“Dr. Krishnadasan has really changed the playing field for thoracic oncology in the Pierce County area,” said Medical Director of Oncology Frank Senecal, MD, FACP, MBA. “His focus on the patient, by bringing all the crucial 10

specialties and support staff together for the individual patient, has done a great deal to optimize care and outcomes.

A Seattle native, she completed her pediatric residency at the Sunrise Children’s Hospital/ University of Nevada School of Medicine. After her residency, she married and moved with her husband to Southern California where she practiced medicine.

Dr. Thoophom-Tran is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and has interests in asthma/allergy, obesity and behavioral care. She also enjoys teaching and was a preceptor (an expert or specialist who provides practical experience and training) for USC Medical School students and residents in outpatient clinics.

»» Cancer Research Study To better understand ways to prevent cancer, the American Cancer Society is recruiting men and women across the US and Puerto Rico for a landmark new research study – Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3). Enrollment is being made possible in partnership with Franciscan Health System at St. Joseph Medical Center, St. Francis Hospital and St. Anthony Hospital, September 15 - 27, 2012.

Individuals may choose to participate if they are willing to make a long-term commitment to the study (which involves completing follow-up surveys periodically over the next 20-30 years), are between the ages of 30 and 65 years old and have never been diagnosed with cancer.
