Your heart is a pump. And like many mechanical pumps, it runs on electricity. The atria, or heart’s upper chambers, are where the electrical impulses that stimulate your heart’s pumping action begin, explained Franciscan Heart & Vascular Associates cardiac electrophysiologist Amrit Guptan, MD, FACC, FHRS. The lower chambers — the ventricles — pick up the signal and do the pumping. Too many or too few electrical signals can be dangerous, said Dr. Guptan. “With too few, your heartbeat slows. On the other hand, too many, or an ‘electrical storm’ of signals, may cause your heart to stop; a condition called cardiac arrest or sudden death,” he said, stressing the importance of seeing your doctor if unusual symptoms occur.

Typically minimally invasive, ablation involves inserting a catheter into the heart through a needle puncture and using either hot or cold energy to eliminate the abnormal electrical firing. “This procedure in most instances is essentially curative. New partnership to bring Franciscan and PeaceHealth together In August, plans were announced for Franciscan Health System to become part of a new, larger health system through a partnership between our parent organization Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) and Vancouver, Wash.-based PeaceHealth. The partnership will enable Franciscan and PeaceHealth to improve access to services, increase the quality of care

and reduce costs. Both Franciscan and PeaceHealth share similar missions and values. The integrated health system will combine seven CHI hospitals in Washington and Oregon (including all of Franciscan’s hospitals and programs) with nine PeaceHealth hospitals in Washington, Oregon and Alaska. The new organization will blend together over time and will

include nearly 26,000 employees and about 950 employed physicians. Recently Franciscan and Burien’s Highline Medical Center also announced a possible affiliation. September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month! The walnut-sized prostate, which encircles a man’s urethra (tube connecting to the urinary bladder), can cause big problems — like prostate cancer. Christopher But the United States Arroyo, MD Preventive Services Task Force has called routine prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening into question because of risks associated with unnecessary cancer treatment, such as incontinence and impotence. However, other health care organizations, including the American Cancer Society, still support PSA testing.

Franciscan Health System urologist Christopher Arroyo, MD, considers PSA screening critical for men age 50 or older. “Screening — including a PSA test and rectal exam — is the only way we have to detect prostate cancer before it’s symptomatic, which is when it’s most curable,” said Dr. Arroyo. “Today, we offer so many effective treatment options at the early stages of the disease.We’ve seen a significant reduction in deaths from prostate cancer since PSA screening began.” Screening is especially important for African-Americans and men whose father, brother, or son have prostate

cancer. Men who have trouble urinating, blood in their urine or semen, pain with ejaculation or chronic back, hip or pelvis pain may also be at higher risk. Comprehensive care

If a patient’s PSA test results show signs of cancer, Dr. Arroyo and other Franciscan physicians take several steps before pursuing treatment. “If PSA is elevated, we’ll run more tests that help us more accurately determine if cancer may be present before biopsy,” he said. “Even if it is cancer, in many men, it is slow-growing. We’re more likely to watch and wait.We will only take action to treat the cancer if we’re seeing significant changes.” If treatment is needed, Franciscan’s leading-edge treatments help save lives and preserve continence and sexual function. These include nerve-sparing, minimally invasive surgical removal of the prostate, often using a robotic-assisted technique, as well as radioactive “seed” implantation and external radiation therapy to help kill cancer cells. Dr. Krishnadasan and St. Joseph are only the third thoracic surgeon/site in the United States — and the only one in the West — to earn this distinction. Every day is Mother’s Day at St. Joseph Medical Center’s Family Birth Center. “The nursing staff and all the providers are open Christina and flexible to helping a Martinez, CNM woman achieve the delivery she wants,” said Christina Martinez, a certified nurse midwife and advanced registered nurse practitioner. “That’s one of the many aspects that make our Family Birth Center exceptional.” Christina works at St. Joseph’s Women’s Clinic which is located across the street from the medical center. She and her colleagues help deliver between 80 and 100 babies every month at the birth center. Christina said the center’s close collaboration with nurse midwives is unique. A nurse midwife is an advanced practice nurse trained to care for women experiencing normal pregnancies and deliveries. “We definitely like to involve families through the entire process,” Christina said. “And St. Joseph helps facilitate that.” Obstetrician and gynecologist Mark Behnam, MD, recently joined Franciscan Women’s Health Associates. “I enjoy being an obstetrician because of the close relationship I get to develop with the

patient,” Dr. Behnam said. He added that he’s excited to work in the Family Birth Center’s new neonatal intensive care unit, which is undergoing an expansion. Among its unique services, St. Joseph is the only location in the area that offers water births, where mothers deliver while immersed in a small pool. Water delivery often alleviates pain and promotes relaxation, Christina said. The birth center also offers the option of a vaginal delivery to women who have previously had a Cesarean section. It is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week by physicians and surgical staff in case of any complications. Joint replacement patient credits Joint Camp for a smooth recovery At age 79, Frank Baldi is still active, working as a manufacturer’s representative for a commercial carpet company. When he needed a partial knee replacement, Frank Richard Gray, turned to St. Joseph Medical MD Center, and he’s glad he did. “I love that hospital,” Frank said. He is especially happy to have taken part in Joint Camp. Joint Camp is Franciscan’s unique and innovative program for patients having joint replacement surgery, and it was the first of its kind in this area. It removes the mystery from jointreplacement surgery by enabling small groups of patients to go through the process together — from pre-surgical education and surgery, to recovery, rehabilitation and discharge. People make friends, learn, participate in activities and cheer each other on to recovery. Joint Camp allows patients to develop a sense of camaraderie when they work together to recover, said Richard Gray, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at St. Joseph Medical Center. “It’s beneficial for the patients to know they’re

not the only ones going through this,” said Dr. Gray. “There’s a community feeling of ‘we’re all in this together.’There’s a foundation of practical advice and guidance courtesy of the nurses and physical therapists.” Frank said Joint Camp allowed him to get back on his feet after surgery. He took part in group activities like navigating stairs and using a putting green to practice fine motions. “They provided the individual help that I needed,” he said. “Joint Camp wasn’t just a useful part of my recovery,” Frank said. “It was a great experience, too.”

Gina Craig, a physical therapist at St. Joseph Medical Center, took some time to answer common questions about the Joint Camp program.

Why do you recommend attending a class prior to surgery and how does it help campers be more successful in their recovery? When you attend class, you have the opportunity to learn what you can do before surgery to help with a smoother transition after surgery. You’re given written information to help you prepare for what to expect after surgery and your family member, or “coach,” also learns what his or her role is and how to best help you. What are the benefits of getting campers moving immediately after surgery and how is this related to the Joint Camp philosophy? There are fewer medical complications when you are up and actively moving. It gets the joint moving, decreases stiffness, and you begin to trust your new joint. This promotes a feeling of wellness.
