Highline Cancer Center welcomes new cancer nurse navigator

Regional Hospital moving to Highline Medical Center When patients in critical care have stabilized, but still require acute hospitalization over an extended time, they are sometimes transferred to a long term acute care facility (LTAC). Regional Hospital has been the premier LTAC facility in the five-state region since it opened in 1994, providing specialized care including programs for ventilator weaning and complex medical management. Regional Hospital, located in Tukwila, will move to Highline Medical Center this fall. Relocating at Highline will benefit patients and their families through closer collaboration with specialists and quicker and easier access to needed services. The new Highline location also offers larger, private rooms with more services on site for family and friends.

For more information about this specialized care, visit regionalhospital.org.

The Highline Cancer Center is delighted to introduce Laurie Bettridge, RN, BSN, OCN, our new cancer nurse navigator. The nurse navigator is an integral part of our comprehensive multidisciplinary cancer care team. Laurie previously served as an oncology nurse at Highline Medical Center and is well suited for this important role assisting patients through their cancer care journey. The cancer nurse navigator collaborates with each cancer patient as well as members of the healthcare team to facilitate a coordinated approach to the patient’s plan of care. The navigator, serving as a patient advocate, is involved in development of the treatment plan, answers questions and helps the patient to schedule appointments, obtain resources and more.

For more information about the Highline Cancer Center, please call (206) 439-5577.

New cath lab opens at Highline Highline Medical Center is proud to have opened its new catheterization lab (or cath lab) in late August. A cath lab is an examination room containing diagnostic imaging equipment used to find and treat abnormalities in the heart and other parts of the circulatory system. The new lab is state of the art and will allow physicians to perform a wide range of cardiac and other circulatory procedures. This means a patient suffering a heart attack, due to a plaqueclogged artery, can be diagnosed and

within minutes have the vessel opened with a stent, restoring blood flow to the heart. Some of these procedures were previously performed in the OR. The new facility allows select procedures to now be performed in the cath lab resulting in faster treatment and reduced costs for our patients. This new lab replaces the 12-year-old lab that was limited due to its size and age of the equipment. This new space and upgraded equipment will allow us to

continue to provide the highest quality of care to our community, including visitors to our emergency department, one of the busiest in the region. The new lab was made possible in large part to over $600,000 raised by the Highline Medical Center Foundation including gracious donations from the Ohrt family.

With you all the way beating Breast cancer surrounded by love, support and top-notch care About one in eight women will battle breast cancer. But many more lives are affected. Loved ones also share in this difficult, life-changing experience. And the support they offer during this journey can make all the difference. Just ask Burien resident Diana Dena and her husband, Andrew. When their lives were affected by a breast cancer diagnosis, they turned to our area’s best care at Highline Cancer Center.

Reminder call A reminder phone call that it was time for her annual mammogram prompted Diana to perform an impromptu self-exam. She felt a hard lump and was immediately concerned – this lump felt different from benign lumps that had been discovered in the past. “Before I ever went in, I knew. Before the ultrasound and biopsy I just knew,” she said. “I had cancer.”

Show of support As Diana faced surgery and chemotherapy she found support at every turn. “My husband was faithfully supportive, just a wonderful caregiver,” she said. Her daughters, Melissa and Rebecca, and two of Diana’s sisters also assisted in caring for her and taking her to appointments when Andrew had to work. Her 86-year-old mother and two other sisters shaved their heads when Diana’s own hair began to fall out. Their church family also showed up. Between meals that arrived each evening and greeting cards that came every day, the outpouring of love is something that Diana says touched her deeply and helped her to maintain a positive outlook. The caring and supportive nature of the entire Highline team is something that struck Andrew. It was a stark contrast to their experience at a different hospital where Diana began treatment before transferring to Highline. “To this day, if we have

Bin Xie, MD

questions, we call and we get a good response. We are very, very thankful that Diana received her treatment at Highline,” he said. “We believe through prayer God directed our path to Highline Oncology, Dr. Xie and the nursing staff.”

Compassionate and knowledgeable Diana’s treatment team was headed by Bin Xie, MD, an oncologist at Franciscan Oncology Associates in Burien. “In my opinion, Dr. Xie went above and beyond,” said Andrew. “You can tell his heart is in the right place. He was sensitive to the issues and addressed any questions or concerns that we had— and he took the time to make sure we understood the answers. When I was with my wife as she was receiving infusions I watched him move and communicate with others. I believe the way he treated us is the norm not the exception.” “I strive to offer my patients information in a way that helps them to understand the scope of their illness so that they feel comfortable and confident as they navigate the treatment process,” said Dr. Xie. “There are a variety of approaches to treating breast cancer, and a lot of information to consider to determine the best approach for a given individual. It can feel overwhelming. I try to ease that burden.”

We’re in it together The experts at Highline Cancer Center are here to provide you with clear information and to address any concerns. Our area’s expert team of oncology doctors, nurses and staff coordinate care to make sure everyone is on the same page. This means that starting from the moment we first see you and all the way through your treatment program, you get high-quality, compassionate care.

We are with you all the way If you have questions about breast cancer treatments or services, contact Highline Cancer Center at (206) 439-5577.

Burien resident Diana Dena relied on her husband Andrew’s enduring love and support throughout her battle with breast cancer — a battle that she won.

Winning the battle together We offer high-tech care and teamwork to help men beat testicular cancer Could you have cancer and not know it? It’s common for testicular cancer to progress without any symptoms, making the disease more likely to advance before you know something is wrong. Most often testicular cancer occurs in men between the ages of 20 and 34, but infants and elderly men can also develop this disease. When Seattle resident Kevin Roundtree learned he might have cancer, he turned to Highline Cancer Center for answers.

Just that fast One moment Kevin was finishing up at work and the next he was rushing himself to the hospital. The swelling he experienced made it obvious Steven that something was wrong. Ginsberg, MD The doctor said it might be a blockage or it could be testicular cancer. At 47 years old, and in good health, Kevin was stunned. “I’m kind of a ‘rough and tumble, busted up, been sewn up more than a pair of Levis’ kind of guy and this one caught me by surprise.”

Finding your way “What it comes down to, what’s really most important isn’t my ego or my emotions, it’s my family. I’ve got three kids and a wife. I wasn’t ready to die. You really have to get fit with

8 CHI Franciscan Health | Fall 2014

your emotions, figure out which way you’re gonna go, and then hit it.” Kevin didn’t want to waste time. He and his wife, Jodie, went to see Steven Ginsberg, MD, a medical oncologist at Franciscan Oncology Associates in Burien, and a part of the Highline Cancer Care team. Kevin was willing to do whatever it would take to get the cancer out of his body. Dr. Ginsberg explored the options with him and they came up with a treatment plan. Kevin has nothing but praise for the doctor and nurses at Highline who he says won the fight for him. “The nurses at the cancer center allowed me to function my way to get better,” he said. “I didn’t want to lie down and be sick. I needed to keep moving, keep working and keep living. They helped me to do that.”

Life after treatment Now that chemotherapy is finished, Kevin still remains vigilant. He will continue to see Dr. Ginsberg for regular follow-ups so that they can monitor his health and watch for relapse. “Follow-up appointments are essential,” said Dr. Ginsberg. “We not only monitor for signs of the cancer returning, we also watch for treatment side effects. Blood tests and imaging tests such as x-rays or CT scans can help us to detect relapse at an early stage.”

If you need to fight the battle, let us help you win. Contact the Highline Cancer Care Center at (206) 439-5577.

Seattle resident Kevin Roundtree holds a few of the 100s of hats he received from around the world. While battling testicular cancer Kevin’s wife asked friends and family to send “hats for baldy” and the response was overwhelming.

Another concern for men: prostate cancer Testicular cancer isn’t the only “manly cancer” that men need to be concerned about. Approximately one in seven men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. It is the second most common cancer among men and the second leading cause of cancer death in men. Fortunately, with early detection prostate cancer can often be successfully treated.

Risk factors The risk for prostate cancer increases after the age of 50. About 60 percent of diagnosed men are over the age of 65. Having a father or brother with the disease more than doubles the chance that a man will have prostate cancer.

Screening A prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test is used to measure your PSA levels. Elevated levels could indicate prostate cancer. A digital rectal exam (DRE) is a manual exam of the prostate to feel for hard spots or lumps on the gland. If tests results are suspicious, your doctor may recommend an ultrasound guided biopsy. Talk with your doctor about being screened.

University Place resident Jeff Bonnell is back to hiking thanks to great care at Franciscan Heart Center.

10 CHI Franciscan Health | Fall 2014

Back on the trail Minimally invasive heart surgery, team approach help local hiker recover FASTer University Place resident and avid hiker Jeff Bonnell had been living with a leaky heart valve for over a decade. But, when climbing the football stadium bleachers left him very short of breath, he knew something wasn’t right. After attending one of CHI Franciscan Health’s heart health talks, Jeff got a thumbs-up from his cardiologist to seek care with one of the Northwest’s most skilled heart surgeons, Craig Hampton, MD, with Franciscan Cardiothoracic Surgery Associates at St. Joseph. Dr. Hampton confirmed Jeff needed his mitral valve repaired. “I was ecstatic to find out I was a candidate for minimally invasive heart surgery,” said Jeff. Craig Hampton, MD Minimally invasive heart surgery offers major benefits over traditional open heart surgery, including a smaller incision, and often less blood loss and a faster recovery. On the day of the surgery, Jeff, who works as a nurse educator, saw former students he had actually trained standing by. Now they were ready to take care of him. “Everyone was fantastic,” he said. “They made a real effort to make sure I was informed about everything going on.”

Successful surgery Dr. Hampton performed the procedure at St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma, not far from Jeff’s home. The surgery left a small, four-inch incision between his right ribs. Within a day, the nursing team had him attempt to stand and supported his efforts to get moving again. Three days later, he went home.

As part of his recovery, Jeff attended CHI Franciscan’s cardiac rehabilitation program at St. Joseph. Three times a week, nursing staff and physiotherapists showed him how to safely exercise again to strengthen his heart and rebuild his stamina. Staying active was an important goal for Jeff. Thanks to his work with CHI Franciscan staff, he’s been able to trek to Paradise Lodge on Mt. Rainier and enjoyed a hike in Alaska over the summer. “Franciscan got me on the mountain again,” Jeff said. “I have never felt better!”

Making heart surgery easier for you Jeff is just one of many who can benefit from minimally invasive heart surgery, according to Dr. Hampton. “Any time a small incision is made, it’s better for the patient,” he said. “There’s less stress, less trauma and potentially a safer, faster recovery.” CHI Franciscan offers a wide variety of high-tech, minimally invasive heart procedures, including: ■■  Mitral valve repair and replacement ■■  Aortic valve replacement ■■  Cardiac arrhythmia surgery ■■  Coronary artery bypass graft (bypass surgery) “We offer the most advanced, state-of-the-art heart surgery from some of the Northwest’s most skilled heart surgeons, each with different specialties and expertise,” said Dr. Hampton. In fact, our surgeons perform more minimally invasive heart procedures than any other heart surgeons in the South Puget Sound. We know being told you need heart surgery can be overwhelming, but with CHI Franciscan, you’re in good hands.

Want to learn more about minimally invasive heart surgery? Call us at (253) 426-6700 or visit FranciscanHeart.org/small. www.CHIfranciscan.org 11

Two is better than one Couple finds winning weight loss plan with Franciscan Center for Weight Management

When Barry Allen decided to change his life with weight loss surgery, he knew who would support him along the way: his wife, Wynetta. Barry weighed 331 pounds, and a previous spinal injury prevented him from exercising. He had high blood pressure, high cholesterol and was on the borderline of having type 2 diabetes. So he turned to the Franciscan Center for Weight Management for help. He met with Troy Houseworth, MD, FACS, who specializes in bariatric and minimally invasive surgery at the center. Together, they decided that the vertical sleeve gastrectomy was Barry’s best choice. “One of the benefits of vertical sleeve gastrectomy is a quicker recovery time,” said Dr. Houseworth. Barry had the surgery in January 2013 and lost more than 115 pounds over the next several months. Wynetta was his steadfast support. Barry’s experience was so positive, it prompted Wynetta to see how weight loss surgery might help better her health. She was a good candidate and had a vertical sleeve gastrectomy in May 2013, just months after her husband. She has lost 85 pounds so far and continues to work toward her goal weight. “It takes support, diet and exercise to maintain,” said Wynetta. “It’s not just a quick fix. It’s a lifestyle change with a jump start.” “We had the surgeries close together so we could learn from and support

12 CHI Franciscan Health | Fall 2014

Barry and Wynetta had weight loss surgery just months apart. Together, they’ve lost a total of about 200 pounds!

each other,” said Barry. “The first month is always the hardest. I’d tell her that it would be OK and she could do it.”

Your weight loss surgery plan Weight loss surgery should be individualized based on a person’s health issues and weight loss goals. If you are interested in surgery, the first step is to attend one of our bariatric seminars to learn about your options, Dr. Houseworth said. The next step is to schedule a consultation with our team where we will review the appropriate treatment options and requirements. “Through a physical, psychological and lifestyle evaluation, the center will help you determine your best choice

for long-term success,” said bariatric surgeon Haroon P. Anwar, MD. When you work with our center, you’ll be in great hands. Franciscan Center for Weight Management, based at St. Francis Hospital in Federal Way, was designated a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery in December 2006. The designation recognizes the center’s experience and favorable outcomes in weight loss surgery. More than 2,000 surgical weight loss procedures have been performed at St. Francis Hospital over the past 10 years. The surgeons perform the most robotic-assisted surgeries in the state.

Highline Medical Center Foundation commits to raise funds for

3D mammography technology Highline Medical Center is committed to serving women in our community and giving them the best access to screening for their health. At Highline Medical Center Foundation, our Board and Staff plan to embark on a fundraising campaign in support of women’s health care initiatives, including raising $450,000 to purchase a new 3D tomography machine.

A whole new look at breast cancer screening 3D mammography is a state-of-the-art screening and diagnostic tool that helps physicians find breast cancers at the earliest stage when the disease is more curable and when treatment is less invasive.

3D mammography uses a technology similar to CT scans. In 3D mammography, the imaging machine moves around the breast in an arc that a computer combines into a 3-dimensional rendering of the entire breast. With 3D mammography, radiologists can manipulate the images to see areas of concern from all angles helping them to pinpoint the size, shape and location of any abnormalities. The advantage of this technology is that it provides a clearer, more accurate view of the breast so cancers can be detected at the earliest stage. We are committed to assuring that the women of our community have access to the most advanced technology. This is not only our goal but it is our mission. We believe that we can

make a real difference in the lives of women by enhancing our mammography technology so that we catch cancer at the earliest stage possible. But we need community support to do this. Bringing this technology to Highline will benefit ALL of the more than 1,200 women we currently serve each year. Additionally, it will benefit those women who now have to travel outside of the Highline service area to access the best, most current breast health technology available, since this technology does not currently exist in the immediate Burien/Highline area. We hope that you will join with us in making our healthcare facility the best it can be for all of those who live and work in South King County.

“To Your Health!” Gala & Auction We hope that you can join us on Saturday, Nov. 1, for our Annual “To Your Health!” Gala & Auction. A portion of the funds raised that evening will go toward purchasing a 3D tomography machine. If you’d like to attend the auction, please call the Foundation at (206) 901-8508. If you’re unable to attend, but interested in more information or supporting this worthy project, call (206) 901-8503 or visit supporthighline.org.
