New electronic health record brings dramatic benefits After June 1, Ed Lopez, PA-C, will have a slightly different routine when seeing patients at St. Joseph Medical Center. Mr. Lopez, an inpatient team medical provider, will now be recording patient health information into a computer in the patient’s room, not on a paper chart. It’s a seemingly small change that offers dramatic benefits to both doctors and patients.

St. Joseph Medical Center, St. Francis Hospital, St. Clare Hospital and St. Anthony Hospital will all launch a new electronic health record system the first week of June. St. Elizabeth, which is already on an electronic health record system, will adopt the same system as the rest of the facilities in 2014. Franciscan Medical Clinics will transition to one electronic health record by the end of the year.

The key to the new electronic health records is that each patient will have only one record or chart — no matter what doctor they see in the system. “The benefit of having just one record is that, over time, the medical history and the information in that patient record becomes much more complete and accurate

resulting in a more consistent and less fragmented source of patient information and treatment which then becomes available to all physicians whether in or out of the hospital,” Mr. Lopez explained.

“Good information is essential for good health care. A patient’s medical history is unique to that individual and tells us a great deal,” Mr. Lopez added. “Too often we have to rely exclusively on the memories of patients or family members for important medical information. With this new system, if the patient has been seen within the Franciscan network of hospitals and clinics in the past, we’ll be able to call up their health record immediately resulting in accurate information.”

Patients also will have quick access to their health information by signing up for the system’s secure, online Franciscan MyChart tool.

Using MyChart, patients will be able to view their medical records, request appointments or prescription refills from their primary care doctor — even email their doctor. MyChart also will provide reminders of screening tests and other health information to help patients get not only the best in health care, but also the best in illness prevention.

Breast Center gets $2.75 million gift for 3D mammography The Gary E. Milgard Family Foundation has awarded a $2.75 million grant for the Carol Milgard Breast Center to provide tomosynthesis (also known as 3D mammography) to aid in the early detection of breast cancer. The technology will be installed later this year, making the center the first in Pierce County to offer this technology. The Carol Milgard Breast Center located in Tacoma is a partnership between Franciscan Health System and another local health organization serving the greater Tacoma area and surrounding communities. Franciscan will also install the 3D system at its mammography centers in Federal Way, Enumclaw and Gig Harbor in the next two years.

Local doctors, hospitals partner to coordinate care for Medicare feefor-service beneficiaries Franciscan Health System has joined with Northwest Physician Network, an association of local independent community physicians, to form an Accountable Care Organization (ACO) to ensure Medicare Fee-For-Service beneficiaries in the South Sound have access to high-quality, coordinated care. Called Franciscan Northwest Physicians Health Network, it is the first ACO in the South Puget Sound area and the second in the state. Since the passage of the Affordable Care Act, more than 250 ACOs have been established nationally.

All ACOs must meet quality standards to ensure savings related to Medicare Fee-For-Service beneficiaries through improving care coordination and providing care that is appropriate, safe and timely.

What women should know about health screenings You have lists for work, groceries and errands. But when do you ever put yourself at the top of your to-do list?

The time is now: talking with your doctor about important health screenings is one of the most effective ways to safeguard your wellbeing.

“Regular health screenings facilitate early detection and treatment of conditions before they become major problems,” said Karen Nelson, MD, Franciscan Health System’s division chief for Women’s Health and OB/GYN with Franciscan Women’s Health Associates in the new Medical Office Building at St. Joseph. “For example, cervical cancer has decreased 50 percent in the last 30 years in the United States due to routine Pap screening.”

Here’s a closer look at why regular health screenings should be on your to-do list.

Feel fine? Health problems can still lurk Many screenings, from blood tests to Pap smears, can detect problems you may not know you have. That’s because many conditions, such as elevated blood sugar and cervical cancer, often don’t have any symptoms early on. “Most conditions are easier to treat when you catch them in their earliest stages,” said Margaret Mercado, MD, a family medicine physician at Franciscan Medical Clinic in Port Orchard. “What’s more, once you’re aware of a health issue, such as high triglycerides or prediabetes, you can start making diet and lifestyle changes 6

that can help control the problem before you reach the point of needing medication.

Heart disease in men receives lots of attention, but it’s also the number one killer of women.

“It’s always important to talk with your physician about your health as well as your family history,” Dr. Mercado said.

“There are general guidelines for screenings, but sometimes you may have a higher risk for certain conditions and may require screenings earlier than the general population. Only you and your doctor can decide what’s best for you.”

Life’s looking up again

Before

Terri Coty’s lifelong weight issue had worsened to 260 pounds. Along with it came arthritis, fibromyalgia, asthma, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and depression.

The 58-year-old said she was on a downward spiral — until she researched weight loss surgeries and attended a Franciscan Center for Weight Management seminar.

“I tried every diet,” Terri explained. “I would reach my goal, then something in my mind would say it’s time to eat again. But after the seminar and learning about my options, I was pumped up. I thought, ‘I can do this!’”

After a brief, supervised medical weight loss plan prior to surgery, Terri had her gastric bypass

in November 2011. She reached her goal weight of 143 pounds at the end of September 2012 — a loss of 117 pounds in less than a year.

“For example, they can call a prescription into a 24/7 pharmacy and you can get started on the medication right away,” Dr. Fegley said.

In some instances, you may be able to video chat with the provider so he or she can see and diagnose an issue like a burn or a rash. “This service doesn’t replace primary care, but increases your access

to it,” said Cliff Robertson, MD, chief operating officer of Franciscan Health System. After your virtual appointment, the provider will e-mail a visit summary to both you and your primary care provider. “It is truly an extension of your relationship to your Franciscan primary care doctor,” Dr. Robertson said.

To make room for the NICU, St. Joseph has remodeled and expanded its Level II special care nursery.

Put your sleep problems to rest Do you often feel tired during the day? Do you sometimes nod off while sitting at your desk or talking to your spouse? You may think these signs are related to stress, but a sleep disorder could be at play.

“Sleep makes up one-third of our lifetime,” said Gary Pingrey, DO, a primary care physician at Franciscan Medical Clinic - Gig Harbor. “Inadequate amounts of sleep can affect your daytime functioning, alertness, attention and memory.”

Insufficient sleep can be caused by health problems, including thyroid disorders, anxiety, depression and adrenal problems. It can also increase your risk of health conditions, including weight gain, high blood pressure, stroke and heart disease.

overnight sleep tests that evaluate what’s causing your problem,” said board certified pulmonologist and sleep medicine specialist Pawan Chawla, MD, medical director of the St. Anthony Sleep Disorders Center on Pt. Fosdick.

Sleep tests are performed in a comfortable, home-like atmosphere. During the sleep test electrodes, and a heart rate monitor, help measure brain waves, eye movement, heart and muscle activity.

Sleep tests are most commonly used to diagnose sleep apnea (when your breathing pauses repeatedly throughout the night). “Sleep apnea can lead to high blood pressure, stroke and heart attack if not treated,” said Dr. Chawla.

specialist can offer treatment options such as continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP).
