Your health depends on it She sees it all the time: “Women put everyone else first, and put themselves last. They say, ‘Oh, I can deal with this a little longer.’ Then the problem gets harder to treat,” Lucie McKee, ARNP said Lucie McKee, ARNP, Women’s Health Associates at St. Francis.

It’s critical to take time to address your own health concerns, McKee tells her patients. That means getting your annual well-woman exam, and also making sure you take time out for yourself daily.

Changes to bring to your provider’s attention prior to your next annual physician’s visit include abnormal menstrual bleeding, post-menopausal bleeding, vaginal lesions and abnormal discharge often associated with discomfort and any new breast changes you haven’t noticed before. Urinary incontinence is also something that can be helped, especially when treated early, so it needs to be discussed.

“Don’t just accept incontinence as a sign of aging,” McKee said. “Partner with your health care provider. Be open and honest about any changes you see or feel in your body. Open communication will take us so much further in protecting your well-being.”

The two things McKee wishes her patients did more often? Get restful sleep, and participate daily in an exercise they enjoy. “It isn’t so much as to what the specific exercise is. However, just like a healthy eating plan, it has to be something you enjoy for a successful long-term change,” she said.

New electronic health record brings dramatic benefits After June 1, Ed Lopez, PA-C, will have a slightly different routine when seeing patients at St. Joseph Medical Center. Mr. Lopez, an inpatient team medical provider, will now be recording patient health information into a computer in the patient’s room, not on a paper chart. It’s a seemingly small change that offers dramatic benefits to both doctors and patients.

St. Joseph Medical Center, St. Francis Hospital, St. Clare Hospital and St. Anthony Hospital will all launch a new electronic health record system the first week of June. St. Elizabeth, which is already on an electronic health record system, will adopt the same system as the rest of the facilities in 2014. Franciscan Medical Clinics will transition to one electronic health record by the end of the year.

The key to the new electronic health records is that each patient will have only one record or chart — no matter what doctor they see in the system. “The benefit of having just one record is that, over time, the medical history and the information in that patient record becomes much more complete and accurate

resulting in a more consistent and less fragmented source of patient information and treatment which then becomes available to all physicians whether in or out of the hospital,” Mr. Lopez explained.

“Good information is essential for good health care. A patient’s medical history is unique to that individual and tells us a great deal,” Mr. Lopez added. “Too often we have to rely exclusively on the memories of patients or family members for important medical information. With this new system, if the patient has been seen within the Franciscan network of hospitals and clinics in the past, we’ll be able to call up their health record immediately resulting in accurate information.”

Patients also will have quick access to their health information by signing up for the system’s secure, online Franciscan MyChart tool.

Using MyChart, patients will be able to view their medical records, request appointments or prescription refills from their primary care doctor — even email their doctor. MyChart also will provide reminders of screening tests and other health information to help patients get not only the best in health care, but also the best in illness prevention.

Breast Center gets $2.75 million gift for 3D mammography The Gary E. Milgard Family Foundation has awarded a $2.75 million grant for the Carol Milgard Breast Center to provide tomosynthesis (also known as 3D mammography) to aid in the early detection of breast cancer. The technology will be installed later this year, making the center the first in Pierce County to offer this technology. The Carol Milgard Breast Center located in Tacoma is a partnership between Franciscan Health System and another local health organization serving the greater Tacoma area and surrounding communities. Franciscan will also install the 3D system at its mammography centers in Federal Way, Enumclaw and Gig Harbor in the next two years.

Women’s Health and Breast Center earns Imaging Center of Excellence The Women’s Health and Breast Center at St. Francis Hospital in Federal Way has been designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR).

The ACR designation indicates that the program has achieved high practice standards in image quality, personnel qualifications, equipment and technology, as well as quality control procedures and protocols. The professional association conducted peer-review evaluations by boardcertified physicians.

“This recognition of our program as a Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiologists is a testament to our commitment to providing high quality care, ensuring patient safety and satisfying our patients,” said Cynthia Kannenberg, manager of the Women’s Health and Breast Center at St. Francis.

Local doctors, hospitals partner to coordinate care for Medicare feefor-service beneficiaries Franciscan Health System has joined with Northwest Physician Network, an association of local independent community physicians, to form an Accountable Care Organization (ACO) to ensure Medicare Fee-For-Service beneficiaries in the South Sound have access to high-quality, coordinated care. Called Franciscan Northwest Physicians Health Network, it is the first ACO in the South Puget Sound area and the second in the state. Since the passage of the Affordable Care Act, more than 250 ACOs have been established nationally.

All ACOs must meet quality standards to ensure savings related to Medicare Fee-For-Service beneficiaries through improving care coordination and providing care that is appropriate, safe and timely.

Franciscan Northwest Physicians Health Network’s goal is to provide better coordinated care across physician offices and hospitals, better health outcomes and fewer hospital visits for our Medicare Fee-ForService beneficiaries. “Regular health screenings facilitate early detection and treatment of conditions before they become major problems,” said Karen Nelson, MD, Franciscan Health System’s division chief for Women’s Health and OB/GYN with Franciscan Women’s Health Associates in the new medical building at St. Joseph. “For example, cervical cancer has decreased 50 percent in the last 30 years in the United States due to routine Pap screening.”

Feel fine? Health problems can still lurk Many screenings, from blood tests to mammograms, can detect problems you may not know you have. That’s because many conditions such as elevated blood sugar and cervical cancer often don’t have any symptoms early on, but are easier to treat in their earlier stages. “It’s also helpful to establish a relationship with a primary care provider you feel comfortable with, so if problems arise you can go in and discuss them with your doctor,” said Joy Ziemann, MD, a family medicine physician at Franciscan Medical Clinic on 11th Place.

Cruising to a healthy weight By the time Mike Strom turned 30, he weighed more than 200 pounds. When he topped out at 292 at the age of 46, he knew he needed help. Help came in the form of gastric bypass surgery at Franciscan Center for Weight Management.

At first, surgery worried Mike’s wife. But with a painful skin condition called psoriasis, as well as a type of arthritis that accompanies it — “never mind feeling like my head would explode when I reached down to tie my shoes!” — Mike was ready to feel better.

Plus he had elevated liver enzymes and was on his way to a diabetes diagnosis.

In some instances, you may be able to video chat with the provider so he or she can see and diagnose an issue like a burn or a rash. “This service doesn’t replace primary care, but increases your access

After your virtual appointment, the provider will e-mail a visit summary to both you and your primary care provider. “It is truly an extension of your relationship to your Franciscan primary care doctor,” Dr. Robertson said.

Put your sleep problems to rest Do you often feel tired during the day? Do you sometimes nod off while sitting at your desk or talking to your spouse? You may think these signs are related to stress, but a sleep disorder could be at play.

“Sleep makes up one-third of our lifetime,” said board certified neurologist and sleep medicine specialist David Brown, MD, who is also medical director of the St. Francis Sleep Disorders Center in Federal Way. “Inadequate amounts of sleep can affect your daytime functioning, alertness, attention and memory.”
