Vaccinate for health!

Washington state saw 219 cases of pertussis (whooping cough) this year. Of all infants hospitalized 80% were three months or younger. Adult immunization with the Tdap vaccine is the most effective way to stop the spread of this serious disease.

The CDC reported the largest number of measles cases in the U.S. since 1994: 288 cases this year. Most cases are imported by unvaccinated travelers. Before the U.S. had the vaccine, 400-500 children died each year. Currently 15% of measles patients require hospitalization.

Regional Hospital joins CHI Franciscan Health

St. Joseph Medical Center partners with Metro Parks Tacoma St. Joseph Medical Center is proud to partner with Metro Parks Tacoma to create healthier communities! St. Joseph helped sponsor two popular community events this past summer, Tacoma’s Ethnic Fest, held in historic Wright Park, and the Summer Playground Program. Our nursing staff offered free blood pressure checks at Ethnic Fest. The Summer Playground Program parallels our healthy living initiatives by encouraging children to eat healthy, stay active and get outside.

Projects for 2015 will include serving as presenting sponsor for Metro Parks Tacoma’s Adaptive Sports Camps, which provide recreational opportunities for people with physical disabilities.

When patients in critical care have stabilized, but still require acute hospitalization over an extended time, they are sometimes transferred to a long term acute care facility (LTAC). Regional Hospital has been the premier LTAC facility in the five-state region since it opened in 1994, providing specialized care including programs for ventilator weaning and complex medical management.

Regional Hospital, located in Tukwila, will move to Highline Medical Center this fall. Relocating at Highline will benefit patients and their families through closer collaboration with specialists and quicker and easier access to needed services. The new Highline location also offers larger, private rooms with more services on site for family and friends.

Just ask Eileen Mosher, RN, MHA, who has worked at CHI Franciscan Health for more than 16 years. Her experience in operating rooms permitted her to witness CHI Franciscan’s skilled surgeons at work. When her routine mammogram detected a tumor, there was no hesitation — if she had to fight breast cancer, she wanted CHI Franciscan on her team. For Eileen and her family — husband, Robert Freeby and their two children, the journey began at Franciscan Cancer Center.

Gathering of support Eileen and Robert’s family were surrounded by support at home and at CHI Franciscan. Friends took turns helping with carpools to get the children to sports practices, and they Lynne P. Clark, MD, FACS made a schedule to determine who was bringing dinner to the family each evening.

“They were enormously helpful,” said Eileen.

At CHI Franciscan, Robert was impressed by the level of compassion shown by Eileen’s treatment team.

During chemotherapy people from different departments would stop by to make sure everything was fine and to ask if they could be of assistance. “Nutritionists would stop by, pharmacologists would stop by, other folks who were connected to the treatment would stop by to make sure everything was fine,” said Robert. “It was just an unbelievably caring and effusive network that opened up.”

said Lynne P. Clark, MD, FACS, a surgeon on Eileen’s treatment team. “It should be someone with whom the patient is comfortable — so much information is shared and sometimes the patient does not hear everything. So it is a way of checking information and also a sounding board when decisions need to be made.”

Not everyone is fortunate enough to have a strong support system. Franciscan has services in place to offer assistance in every scenario. “Franciscan support services do their best to help find the resources to assist patients through their treatments,” said Dr. Clark. “From nurse navigators to social workers to many other people that work behind the scenes to assist cancer patients.”

Nurse navigator Susan Nixon, RN, was there to guide Eileen and Robert as they prepared for surgery and recovery. “I had the mastectomy, a port placed and reconstruction – Susan came to see us every time,” said Eileen. Susan made sure they knew what to expect at every stage of treatment.

“Everybody that we met with and spoke with, I never got the impression from anybody that they were only talking to Eileen about her diagnosis and prognosis,” said Robert. “They were talking to both of us from a very humanistic and holistic perspective.”

Winning the battle together chi franciscan health offers screening and high-tech care to help beat prostate cancer Could you have cancer and not know it? For men, it’s common for prostate cancer to progress without any symptoms. This makes the disease more likely to advance before you know something is wrong. Fortunately, there is the PSA blood test: a screening tool that can lead to early diagnosis and treatment.

Richard Johnston, MD, PhD, urologist and robotic surgeon at Franciscan Urology Associates in Tacoma, recommends prostate screenings for men who are at risk for the disease. This includes men who are over the age of 50, those who have a family history of the disease and those who are of African American or Caribbean ancestry.

When Leo Hastings of Libby, Mont. received his prostate cancer diagnosis he traveled to Tacoma for treatment led by Dr. Johnston. Leo’s son was familiar with CHI Franciscan Richard Health and wanted his dad to Johnston, MD, PhD have the best care – and to him, that meant Dr. Johnston and the staff at Franciscan Urology Associates in Tacoma.

Feeling at ease Navigating the process of choosing a treatment team can be daunting. Finding the right team can be a relief. “After I met Dr. Johnston I felt confident that I was in good hands,” said Leo. “He seemed to know and understand

what he was talking about, and he didn’t talk around corners. He laid it out to you — I liked that. He was very knowledgeable and educated.”

Dr. Johnston explored treatment options with Leo and helped him feel at ease with his decision. “Depending on the stage of disease, prostate cancer may be treated in several ways. On many levels it is a matter of personal preference,” said Dr. Johnston.

Some prostate cancers progress so slowly that no immediate treatment is required.

In such instances “active surveillance” may be warranted, meaning periodic blood tests and rectal exams are used to monitor disease progress. If the cancer is advanced or growing, other options such as radiation, hormone therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy or surgery may be considered.

It is a very individual decision in which a person must weigh the potential outcome with the risk of side effects and impact on their preferred lifestyle.

Another concern for men: testicular cancer Prostate cancer isn’t the only “manly cancer” that men should be concerned about. While a man’s chance of being diagnosed with testicular cancer is low — only about 1 in 270 develops the disease. But when testicular cancer does occur, it tends to strike in younger men.

While this disease can affect males of all ages, about half of all men diagnosed with testicular cancer are between ages 20 and 34.

Performing a self-exam can help lead to early detection of testicular cancer — often a lump is the first sign, although swelling, breast tenderness and early puberty are also possible symptoms.

During or immediately after a shower is the best time to perform a self-exam because the skin of the scrotum is relaxed. Check one testicle at a time by rolling it between your fingers, looking and feeling for lumps or any changes in size, shape or feel of the testicles.

Testicular cancer can typically be treated successfully. Talk with your doctor if you find a suspicious lump or other concern.

Back on the trail Minimally invasive heart surgery, team approach help local hiker recover FASTer University Place resident and avid hiker Jeff Bonnell had been living with a leaky heart valve for over a decade. But, when climbing the football stadium bleachers left him very short of breath, he knew something wasn’t right.

After attending one of CHI Franciscan Health’s heart health talks, Jeff got a thumbs-up from his cardiologist to seek care with one of the Northwest’s most skilled heart surgeons, Craig Hampton, MD, with Franciscan Cardiothoracic Surgery Associates at St. Joseph.

Dr. Hampton confirmed Jeff needed his mitral valve repaired.

“I was ecstatic to find out I was a candidate for minimally invasive heart surgery,” said Jeff.

Successful surgery Dr. Hampton performed the procedure at St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma, not far from Jeff’s home.

The surgery left a small, four-inch incision between his right ribs. Within a day, the nursing team had him attempt to stand and supported his efforts to get moving again. Three days later, he went home.

As part of his recovery, Jeff attended CHI Franciscan’s cardiac rehabilitation program at St. Joseph. Three times a week, nursing staff and physiotherapists showed him how to safely exercise again to strengthen his heart and rebuild his stamina.

Staying active was an important goal for Jeff.

Thanks to his work with CHI Franciscan staff, he’s been able to trek to Paradise Lodge on Mt. Rainier and enjoyed a hike in Alaska over the summer.

“Franciscan got me on the mountain again,” Jeff said. “I have never felt better!”

Two is better than one Couple finds winning weight loss plan with Franciscan Center for Weight Management

When Barry Allen decided to change his life with weight loss surgery, he knew who would support him along the way: his wife, Wynetta.

Barry weighed 331 pounds, and a previous spinal injury prevented him from exercising. He had high blood pressure, high cholesterol and was on the borderline of having type 2 diabetes.
