A jewel in my bag The jewellery influencer Liza Urla is the founder of Gemologue, one of the Top 5 jewellery blogs, in which she celebrates fine, costume and vintage jewellery featuring her exquisite global discoveries.

It is the emotion or memory you experience while wearing it. The value is definitely secondary unless you are looking for an investment piece.

Is there a particular gem or stone you consider a sort of talisman?

My favourite is sapphire as I am absolutely obsessed with blue • [A.R.]

When and why did your jewellery passion started?

As a child I accompanied my family on business trips to Japan, China and South Korea, so since an early age, pieces of jewellery were my talismans while travelling. I had developed my love for stones during my gemmology degree in NYC GIA, and it gradually turned into jewellery passion.

What kind of jewels do you wear?

I like to mix vintage, fine and fashion. My personal choice of metal is white gold and I adore sapphires. I like black costume jewellery at the moment.

Constantly travelling between NYC and London I feel most comfortable in black and it reflects on my costume jewellery style.

Do you follow special rules to wear different jewels?

I will share a secret with you: there is always jewellery in my bag! It is not about what you show the outside world it is about the pieces you collect, pieces which have special memories, achievements and sentimental value.

What is the most important thing in a jewel?

Modelli e materiali che preferisci?

In questo momento mi piace la bigiotteria nera. Viaggio molto tra New York e Londra, mi sento più comoda vestita di nero e questo influenza anche le mie scelte per la gioielleria.

Hai delle regole precise quando scegli un pezzo?

Vi rivelo un segreto. C’è sempre un gioiello nella mia borsa. Quel che conta non è solo quel che si mostra, ma i pezzi a cui ci affezioniamo, pezzi che hanno un valore sentimentale e affettivo.

Che cosa è più importante in un gioiello?

Le emozioni o i ricordi che senti quando lo indossi. Il valore è sicuramente meno importante, a meno che non si voglia fare un investimento.

Una pietra o una gemma che consideri come un talismano?

Lo zaffiro. Sono ossessionata dal blu.

Medically prescribed Jewellery Olga Norhonha, a new point of view for jewellery.

How did you fall in love with jewellery and fashion?

I guess everything started when I was 6/7 years old and I started creating my first “prehistoric” jewellery pieces. In 2007 I moved to the UK, where I first attended the Foundation Course in Art and Design at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design and then the BA Hons in Jewellery Design. Later I continued my studies at Goldsmiths College, where I am now finishing my PhD research thesis.

In your works you try to combine two completely different fields: fashion and the medical field.

I would like for people to understand that a jewellery piece is not only a mere adornment: there is poetry behind the design methodology. “Conflict: rejection/attraction” and “medically prescribed jewellery’” is a new approach to the term jewel, shifting the concept of value and luxury towards a debate on medical science and body design, the new direction of social rituals, the relationship between design and science, and the problems that arise when aesthetics meets ethics.

The most important piece for you?

Come ti sei innamorata della moda e dei gioielli?

Tutto è iniziato quando avevo 6/7 anni e cominciavo a creare i miei primi gioielli, quelli “preistorici”.

Nel 2007 mi sono trasferita in Gran Bretagna, dove ho frequentato dapprima un corso base in arte e design presso il Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design e poi il corso di laurea in design di gioielli. Successivamente, ho proseguito i miei studi presso il Goldsmiths College, con un master in design dove sto ora

Le tue creazioni sembrano un tentativo di unire due campi del tutto diversi: la moda e l’ambito medico.

Vorrei che la gente comprendesse che un gioiello non è un semplice monile decorativo: c’è della poesia dietro la metodologia.

I concetti di “conflitto: avversione/attrazione” e “gioiello prescritto dal medico” costituiscono un nuovo approccio al termine gioiello come catalizzatore di dibattito e riflessione sulla nuova direzione dei riti sociali, sul rapporto tra design e scienza e sui problemi che nascono quando l’estetica incontra l’etica.

Il pezzo a te più caro?

Il Dirty Tissues Project perché è stato considerato la migliore opera di uno studente negli ultimi 21 anni del corso di base in arte e design alla Central Saint Martins, e perché è stato acquistato dalla collezione privata della CSM ed esposta assieme ad Alexander McQueen e Hussein Chalayan. E anche il Filigree Cervical Collar, perché è il mio "gioiello della corona", in quanto è stato il primo pezzo a essere esposto in un vero e proprio museo, il Museo del Gioiello a Vicenza.

Atelier Gaia Repossi

aison Repossi was founded in 1920 in Turin. Three generations followed over the years starting with the launch of the very first boutique in Turin, followed by one in Montecarlo and later in Paris.

The collections immediately stood out for the Art Déco, avant-garde design: this was the beginning of what Repossi would develop into and particularly what it is today, now that Gaia is in charge of the artistic direction of the company.

The impact of these collections answers the demand of a clientele who is always hungry for new styles, today the jewellery lines are sold all over the world. The collections feature complex, pure motifs. Best-selling themes can be found in the Berbère collection, while White Noise is a very graphic line, then there is Antifer, a more accessible collection. The maison also produces a limited-edition collection of pieces which utilises techniques from haute joaillerie.

Gaia talked about her passion for jewellery in an interview during Paris Fashion Week.

You were born into a family of jewellers, today you have the same profession as your parents, how did you get here and why?

Today I do the same job as my father. In fact we both carried on our grandfather’s tradition with some shared elements whilst each maintaining our own specificity and originality. I must confess that I inherited both my grandfather’s and father’s hand, both of them excellent designers.

Gaia’s early career was a long way away from the family tradition: she chose an artistic, intellectual career path, she later returned to the fold at the tender age of twentyone as creative and artistic director.

Her vision meant a complete change for the company, she introduced

the job is concerned, mine is the result of a keen interest in art, architecture, change, culture and cultural heritage. In fact, during the early years of my academic career I studied painting, because I wanted to indulge my passion.

Then I started working at the company while studying archeology in my free time, for pleasure but also to feed my imagination and knowledge. It was then that I became fully aware of the cultural heritage and influences between different cultures and civilisations mainly through the parure concept.

I was also attracted to fashion, change and the power of parallel communication and observation.

I spent a long time questioning certain aspects of my job, today I know exactly what I want to express with my creations. I have tried to introduce a new language to a world which I found to be blocked by a

Like in Japan for example, I hope I have managed to show how change can take place in harmony with tradition and savoir-faire.

Your first creations broke the barriers of traditional jewellery.

What was your first source of inspiration?

Mainly art and sculpture.

Even though my profession is a sort of applied art, the product must always have a certain depth to it and evoke that little extra something.

How do you view today’s universe of young creators within jewellery? Do you think there are any trends from countries such as China or Japan ?

It’s a bold trend which sometimes forgets or omits elements which are vital for the correct integrity and authenticity that a maison such as ours possesses, thanks to the history, tradition and premium savoir-faire anchored in the concepts of ‘Made in Italy’ and ‘Made in France’. It is a very professional environment, rich in years of history, therefore one needs to understand the consequences before entering. I have immense respect for tradition, for craftsmen: they are the driving force behind my job.

Which are your favourite pieces from the collection and musthave items?

Without a doubt the collections which haven’t come out yet and which have been in my imagination for some time now, also the new 'Agrafe' earrings, I wear them myself even though I don’t often wear earrings but je les adore!

Haute joaillerie, a new kind of

The collection was previewed at the Parisian headquarters in Gagosian Gallery where, to mark the occasion, works by Sterling Ruby housed in the space functioned as a backdrop for the collection, in line with its industrial spirit.

Display cases developed in collaboration with Rem Koolhaas / AMO, architect closely linked to the maison.

opulence, obviously this is a very difficult direction and contradictory in terms of my nature, I’m also working on another line, it’s rather tortured and features complex volumes.

Jewellery and fashion, how do you view this relationship?

Like high fashion and fashion.

You have to find the way to give them the right relevance otherwise you end up offering low-quality products which are devoid of individuality • Gaia Repossi: quando la tradizione incontra l’arte e la gioielleria si tinge di una forza stilistica fresca e innovativa ottenendo un successo duraturo.

La Maison Repossi nasce nel 1920 a Torino. Tre generazioni che si succedono nel corso degli anni partendo proprio dall’apertura della prima boutique a Torino, seguita da quella di Montecarlo e poi di Parigi. Le collezioni si contraddistinguono da subito per il design Art Déco e avanguardista: ecco l'embrione di quello che Repossi diventerà negli anni e soprattutto oggi, da quando Gaia ha preso le redini della direzione artistica.

Gli inizi della carriera di Gaia sono lontani dalla tradizione famigliare: segue un suo percorso artistico e intellettuale, per

La collezione è stata presentata in anteprima nella sede Parigina della Galleria Gagosian, dove per l’occasione le opere di Sterling Ruby ospitate nello spazio hanno funzionato da sfondo per la collezione, in sintonia con il suo spirito industriale.

A ospitare le creazioni, vetrine sviluppate in collaborazione con Rem Koolhaas / AMO, architetto molto legato alla maison.

La sua visione porta a un cambiamento a 360 gradi, proponendo una gioielleria architettonica e delle nuove tecniche di lavorazione, preservando però le ferree regole dell’artigianato famigliare e la loro forte tradizione. L’impatto di queste ultime collezioni risponde alle esigenze della nuova clientela sempre avida di nuovi stili e oggi le sue linee sono vendute nel mondo intero. Gaia ci rivela della sua passione in un’intervista durante la Fashion Week di Parigi. È nata in una famiglia di gioiellieri, e il suo mestiere è oggi quello dei suoi genitor. Come ci è arrivata e perché?

continuato la tradizione di nostro nonno con alcuni punti in comune e allo stesso tempo mantenendo ognuno le proprie specificità e particolarità. Confesso che ho ereditato la mano di mio nonno e di mio padre, entrambi eccellenti designer. Per quanto riguarda lo sguardo che apportiamo al nostro mestiere, il mio è il risultato di un interesse vivace per l’arte, l’architettura, il cambiamento, la cultura e il patrimonio culturale. I miei primi studi sono stati infatti sulla pittura proprio perché volevo seguire la mia passione. In seguito ho iniziato a lavorare in azienda studiando al tempo stesso archeologia per passione ma anche per nutrire la mia immaginazione e il mio sapere.

A quell’epoca ho preso coscienza del patrimonio culturale e delle influenze tra culture e diverse civiltà principalmente per il concetto di parure. Ero anche attirata dalla moda, il cambiamento e la forza della comunicazione e l’osservazione in parallelo. Mi sono a lungo interrogata su alcuni aspetti del mio mestiere, l’ho rimesso in questione e oggi ho trovato quello che voglio esprimere attraverso le mie creazioni. Ho tentato di portare un nuovo linguaggio in un mondo che trovavo bloccato da una mancanza di narrazione e in qualche modo con messaggi, ponendo l'accento sul prodotto e il suo universo con un un riguardo particolare al suo posto sul mercato nella nostra epoca..

Come con il Giappone ad esempio, spero di aver potuto dimostrare che il cambiamento può essere in armonia con la tradizione e il savoirfaire.

Con le sue prime creazioni ha spezzato le barriere della gioielleria tradizionale. Qual'è stata la sua prima fonte di ispirazione?

Principalmente l'arte e la scultura. Anche se il mio mestiere è una sorta di arte applicata, il prodotto deve avere una certa profondità ed evocare qualcosa di più.

Come vede oggi l’universo dei giovani creatori nella gioielleria?

Ci sono secondo lei delle correnti artistiche che vengono da paesi come la Cina e il Giappone ?

Trovo che sia uno slancio audace, ma che a volte ometta e dimentichi elementi chiave per poter avere la giusta

entrarci. Ho un grande rispetto per la tradizione, per gli artigiani: sono loro prima di tutto la forza del mio mestiere.

Quali sono i pezzi che più ama nelle sue collezioni e i pezzi must-have?

Senz’altro le collezioni che devono ancora uscire e che già da tempo vedo nella mia immaginazione, e i nuovi orecchini Agrafe, che io stessa indosso pur non mettendo molto gli orecchini ma je les adore!

All’alta gioielleria, a una nuova opulenza, senz’altro una direzione molto difficile e contradditoria per quella che è la mia natura ... poi ho ancora in lavorazione un’altra linea, molto torturata e piena di volumi complessi.

Six crews around the world for the most important event in world sailing which the luxury watch industry keeps a very close eye on: Bremont, Ulysse Nardin and Omega have associated themselves with the trophy by launching exclusive models specifically for the occasion.

Bremont Regatta AC and Regatta OTUSA + Oracle Team USA The British watch brand Bremont may have the most enviable sponsorship, as it is both partner with Oracle Team USA (defenders of the cup) and the America’s Cup event. The company introduced new chronograph Regatta timepieces Bremont Regatta AC and Regatta OTUSA that include a new Regatta calibre, specially designed to be used by sailors and incorporating two unique countdown Regatta chronograph movements.

The Regatta OTUSA watch movements are designed to show a numerical 15-minute display countdown and a 5-minute start time. In addition, the watches have a 12-hour counter and a date function, rarely seen together on Regatta movements. The Regatta OTUSA will be produced in both black and white dial variants and 235 of each watch will be made. In addition, this line bears historical significance because high-grade carbon fibre from the winning 2013 Oracle Team USA AC72 yacht is incorporated into each of the crowns •

Ulysse Nardin FreakWing + Swedish Artemis Racing U lysse N ardin has partnered with the Swedish Artemis Racing team and introduced three timepieces, including the FreakWing, Ulysse Nardin’s hightech watch that contains features of the Artemis catamaran. The upper bridge for the minutes is inspired by the internal structure of the rigid sail, while the texture of the rotating hours disc evokes the mesh net of the multihull. The bezel and case back are forged from carbon fibre, an element that is omnipresent in high-level sailing.

The tourbillon in the centre rides high with the Artemis Racing logo on the back. The UlyChoc safety system is a new generation of shock absorbers. Created and built inhouse, it replaces three traditional

In the absence of a crown, the upper and lower bezels, integrated into the movement, perform the various functions. The calibre UN-210 has an eight-day power reserve. Il sistema di sicurezza UlyChoc è l’ultima generazione di sospensioni. Creato e costruito in casa, sostituisce i tre microelementi tradizionali con uno solo in silicio. La cassa in titanio DLC nera e cinturino stile carbonio con cuciture gialle rendono il FreakWing un orologio leggero e al contempo robusto.

Privo di corona, il castone superiore e inferiore, integrati nel movimento, svolgono le varie funzioni. Il calibro UN-210 ha una riserva energetica di otto giorni. Edizione limitata a 50 esemplari.

Omega Seamaster Diver 300M ETNZ + Emirates Team New Zealand The Omega sail is in full view on the Emirates Team New Zealand catamaran, a strong display of its longtime support of the team.

The watch created for this event is appropriately part of its Seamaster collection. The Diver 300M ETNZ has a black ceramic unidirectional rotating bezel with a polished diving scale whose indications have been created in relief using laser ablation.

There is a dot at the top of the bezel at 12 o’clock, which is coated with white Super-LumiNova and emits a green light.

The sandblasted grade 5 titanium dial has applied indexes

coated with white Super-LumiNova that emits a blue light. A silvery chronograph seconds track can be found on the outer edge of the dial; inside this ring is a matt titanium minute track. There are three sub-dials on the dial: a small seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock, a 12hour recorder at 6 o’clock and a 30-minute recorder at 3 o’clock, which also indicates the fiveminute countdown to the start of a regatta. The 44 mm brushed

grade 5 titanium case has pushers at 2 o’clock and 4 o’clock which stand out with a red aluminium ring and matt black ceramic ring.

In fact, all of the elements that correspond to a chronograph function are coloured in red. There is also a helium escape valve with an integrated date corrector at 10 o’clock •

La vela Omega è in piena vista sul catamarano dell’Emirates Team New Zealand, un simbolo potente del sostegno, ormai di lunga data, per questa squadra. L’orologio creato per l’occasione è consono alla collezione Seamaster. Il Diver 300M ETNZ ha un castone rotante unidirezionale in ceramica nera con una ghiera d’immersione le cui indicazioni sono state messe in rilievo tramite ablazione al laser.

12 è ricoperto di Super-LumiNova bianca ed emette una luce verde. Il quadrante in titanio grado 5 sabbiato ha degli indici applicati ricoperti di Super-LumiNova bianca ed emette una luce blu. La tacchettatura argentata dei secondi si trova sul perimetro esterno del quadrante. All’interno di questo cerchio si trovano invece i ‘binari’ dei minuti in titanio opaco.

Sul quadrante spiccano tre sottoquadranti: uno piccolo dei secondi alle 9, un totalizzatore di 12 ore alle 6 e un

secondo totalizzatore di 30 minuti alle 3, che indica anche il conto alla rovescia di cinque minuti all’inizio della regata. La cassa in titanio grado 5 spazzolato di 44mm ha pulsanti collocati alle 2 e alle 4 che spiccano grazie agli anelli in alluminio rosso e ceramica nera opacizzata. In realtà, tutti gli elementi corrispondenti alle funzioni cronografiche sono di colore rosso. È altresì presente una valvola di sfogo a elio con un correttore di data integrato posto a ore 10.
