By Frank Mareno 1) FIESTA -Tell us about Cristopolis and your career as a Hip-Hop artist? CRIS- My career in Hip-Hop began many years ago as a breakdancer during grade school while growing up in Falls Church, Virginia. Hip-Hop is interesting because, as a culture, it encapsulates many different areas of artistic expression but the core pillars of Hip-Hop are breakdance, graffiti, DJing and rapping. I began as a breakdancer but much like an officer moving up the ranks I tried my hand (extensively) at all of the areas. I was a Hip-Hop DJ for many years specifically through high school. This was in an era before CDJ’s or laptop based DJing. During this time DJing was simply a crate of records, two turntables and a mixer. As a DJ I learned a lot about music, song structures, breakdowns, bridges and how an MC’s lyrics and flow can captivate an audience. During my junior year of high school I moved to Santiago, Chile with my family and took my extensive music collection and turntables with me. I began to DJ in Chile and introduced Hip-Hop to the local scene in a way that had not been introduced in Chile up until that moment in time. I also began to become involved in graffiti while I was there, forming an all city crew called Ninos Con Spray (NCS) and ultimately getting involved in rapping through freestyle. As a freestyle artist I rapped primarily in Spanish while living in Chile, but after a couple of years of this I began to focus more on writing verses and ultimately penning songs. After high school I moved back to the DC area from Chile to start college. I ultimately graduated from George Mason University with a BA in Philosophy. It was around this same time that I released my debut album ‘Metamorphosis’. Since this time, I have release several albums to include two albums recorded in Paris, France. In one album, I had the opportunity to work with the very talented, Ana Tijoux who is featured in my song entitled “Fusion”. I have also released two stateside albums ‘Reggaeton Vs. Hip-Hop’ and ‘Latino Hip-Hop’. The music industry has changed a lot due to technological advancements and this has motivated me to focus on releasing singles straight to fans through digital distribution mediums such as iTunes, Spotify, Amazon and my website; cristopolis.com.
2) FIESTA- Tell us about your particular style of Hip-Hop and the subject matter covered in your material?
3) FIESTA - What is your opinion about Hip-Hop in America, the world at the moment?
CRIS - I feel that my music has evolved a lot over the years although I’ve always worked within the parameters of what I consider to be “Hip-Hop.” When I first started my music career my sound was definitely an East Coast Boom Bap sound that relied heavily on funk and jazz samples with all of my production coming from beat machines specifically the MPC 2000 or the Triton. As I progressed as a performing artist, I began to incorporate more of a Latin sound to my recorded music and live performances. This included the sampling of Salsa, Cumbia, Bossa Nova and Folkloric Latin music and in my live shows I began to incorporate live congas and percussion, Latin dancers and a live DJ. Recently, I have continued to heavily use Latin influences but have also mix these influences with Electronic Dance Music (EDM) specifically the sound native to DC; Moombahton. Several of my recent singles have had a strong EDM influence but they also maintain a very noticeable Latin vibe to them.
CRIS - I think that no one could have imagined back in 1983 how much of a world wide impact Hip-Hop would have on what is now several generations of youth culture and on their respective urban centers around the world. I think that Hip-Hop has and continues to be simultaneously the voice of the repressed and the voice of the club. It manages to cover such a wide spectrum of the population because much like Rock n Roll, Hip-Hop now has numerous subgenres that cover an ever-increasing range of topics, styles, languages and niches.
Although my music style has evolved over the years I feel that the overarching topics and general voice and tone of my songs have remained relatively the same. Overall, I cover topics in a way that is pensive with a heavy focus on lyrical dexterity. Even in songs that are meant to be light (like a club anthem), I bring light content but I focus on serious lyrical complexity and wordplay. Personally, it’s important to me, especially in Hip-Hop, for lyrics to be insanely awesome. So that’s what I try to do, everytime I pick up the pen and everytime I’m in the studio laying down vocals.

4) FIESTA - What projects are you currently working on? CRIS - As I mentioned earlier, over the last couple of years I have focused on releasing singles because they enable me to release music that is timely, current and relevant. If I get a song idea or a beat that is hot, I no longer have to wait till I have 11 other songs to release it as part as an album. I simply write, record, mix, release, market and then repeat the process. My next single is the entitled “Morena” and it is over a Moombahton beat and features DC urban latin artist Gordo Brega. Earlier this year I released the singles; “Choque” (Remix) ft. Sensato & Chingo Bling, the futuristic sounding “Duro” ft. MC Ceja and the international music influenced “Get Money” ft. Carolyn Rodriguez

Interview with the Artist
August 2014 / www.fiestaDCmagazine.com - 13
Hip hop music, also called hip-hop,rap music,or hip-hop music, is a music genre consisting of a stylized rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and rhyming speech that is chanted. It developed as part of hip hop culture, a subculture defined by four key stylistic elements: MCing/rapping, DJing/scratching, break dancing, and graffiti writing. Other elements include sampling (or synthesis), and beatboxing.
MC Ceja MC Ceja was born in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, but he was raised both in Brooklyn, NY and Puerto Rico alongside his younger brother and sister. His brother, called “Cejita,” died in a car accident in 2006. When Alberto was 13 years old, he started performing in talent shows and local parties. He also started composing songs which made fun of teachers and classmates. His breakthrough came when he met reggaeton producer, DJ Eric, over the telephone, and by playing one of his songs he was able to grab DJ Eric’s attention. Back in the day when recordings were made on underground cassettes, Ceja released a song called “Dame Ese Blunt.” From then on Ceja started to appear in productions such as Hip Hop Reggae Mix, Street Style 1, Street Style 2. He was also a major part in DJ Eric Industry Volumes 3, 4, 5 which produced lots of memorable songs from MC Ceja like, “Jingle, Jangle” “So Good,” “No Paciencia,” “Mueve Tu Figura de Campeona (Shalalalong).”
Chingo Bling Pedro Herrera III (born September 6, 1979 in Houston, Texas), better known by his stage name Chingo Bling, is an American rapper and producer of Mexican descent. Chingo earned a scholarship to attend the Peddie School in Hightstown, New Jersey, part of an effort by his parents to keep him away from the corrupting influences of the urban environment.[1] Herrera holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration Marketing with a Minor in Communications from Trinity University.

Hip Hop Culture
While often used to refer to rapping,“hip hop” more properly denotes the practice of the entire subculture. The term hip hop music is sometimes used synonymously with the term rap music, though rapping is not a required component of hip hop music; the genre may also incorporate other elements of hip hop culture, including DJing and scratching, beatboxing, and instrumental tracks.
Carolyn Rodriguez A half-caucasian, half-Spaniard born bilingual singer and writer, she walked into a little studio in the Dope House Records warehouse with DFO Music Group back in 2001 hoping to record a demo to shop to some record labels. Five years later, she had worked with several Dope House artists in Houston, Texas, and is now recognized for her features on South Park Mexican’s recent billboard-topping release “When Devils Strike”. Carolyn Rodriguez is originally from North Carolina but came to Sam Houston State University in and graduated with an Accounting degree. There was an undeniable force that pulled her to Dope House Records. “I heard SPM’s ‘Mary Go Round’ in a friend’s car and I told everyone in college ‘I’m gonna do a song with this guy. Now we’ve done so many I can’t count! God definitely brought me here for a reason”... and it’s definitely no coincidence that she ended up at the largest and most established independent Latin rap label. DFO Music Group, headed by Jaime “Pain” Ortiz, was the production team that helped get Carolyn to that window of opportunity with SPM. “When Pain said ‘he wants to hear you sing and try you out on a hook’, I was wondering if he would even like my voice. After the first one he told me ‘I want you on ALL my hooks. You got that gangsta soul”. After sealing a strong partnership with SPM and Juan Gotti on numerous songs, DFO was ready to sprinkle Carolyn Rodriguez on everyone’s album.
Sensato
With his unique style and his distinguishing punch line delivery, NYC based and Bronx raised Sensato has revolutionized the standard Latin Urban sound that we all have been accustomed to in the past. This cutting edge lyricist, Sensato, has the ability to paint a picture with words, fill up a dance floor and provoke thoughts within his listeners. After years of working independently on his own record label, Tiburon Records and combining the adrenaline pumping rhythm from his native Dominican Republic and the new school Latin Hip Hop feel, radiating from New York City, Sensato made his mainstream introduction in August 2009 with his smash hit “Watagatapitusberry” which reached #4 on the Latin Billboard Latin Rhythm chart and Tropical Chart as the Top 50 Hot Latin Song.

Health & Fitness
This month I talk to Kenneth Low about his hobby of mountain biking. Ken is a cancer biologist for the National Cancer Institute. He has been cycling since college (over 30 years)and mountain biking for 25
Donna McGinn
LMT, Physique competitor. donnamcginnphysique@yahoo.com http://www.donnamcginn.com https://www.facebook.com/DonnaMcGinnAthlete
How did you get into this sport? I was already into hiking trails but I was frustrated by the slow pace. I started looking for something that would allow me to see more and be more technically challenging but allow me to stay on the trails. I also wanted an activity which would allow me to get fitter without running, as I detest running, so trail runs were out. Is this a sport you can do year round? How does the weather affect your riding? Yes, mountain biking can be done year round, ideally in the summer but even when there is a few inches of snow on the ground in the winter. The key thing is to dress appropriately and have the right equipment for the conditions. There is nothing worse than being cold or having wet feet during the ride. It is pretty miserable. Personally I only ride in the spring, summer and fall as I hate being too cold and do not like having to add many extra layers. Besides I’d rather go skiing if there is snow on the ground and unlike Charlie Brown, I do not like being the only one out in the rain. Do you consider this an expensive sport? What goes into it? Equipment, clothes, park fees? Expensive is relative but you do need a mountain bike, not a hybrid or a road bike. There are three common types of mountain bikes, rigid (no suspension in front or rear wheels), hardtail (suspension in front wheel only) and full suspension (suspension in both front and rear wheels). The price increases with the amount of suspension. If you are just getting into mountain biking, I’d recommend spending between, $500-$1000 on a hard-tail mountain bike, to see if you enjoy it enough to keep at it. If you do, you can then decide if you want to spend more money on a full suspension mountain bike or go retro into a rigid. You can get a decent rigid mountain bike for ~$500 or in excess of $5000 for a full suspension mountain bike with all the bells and whistles. The important thing is to get the bike properly adjusted to your body since very few people have the same length in arms, legs and torso. A good local bike shop will adjust a bike to suit your body, usually for free if you buy a bike from them or for a small fee if you’d like a custom fitting. Another very important element is to make sure you get a proper seat, especially for women. Most bikes seats
are made for men and we all know women and men have very different ‘soft parts’ and butts. A bicycle that is not adjusted properly and an inappropriate seat is one of the main reasons people stop cycling and besides it will cause you to put undue stress on your joints (knees) and back and can lead to injury. These are the two most neglected aspects of a new bike purchase. What do you do to get ready for the season? Physically, mentally, equipment.... I try to keep cycling on a bike machine or have my bike on an indoor bike machine in the winter. There is nothing worse than joining your buddies for a spring ride, the buddies who have been riding outside all winter, and try to keep up with them but get dropped like a hot rock. Even with indoor training, I try to get out and do a few grueling rides by myself in the spring to make sure I am in shape before I join the other guys. I do all the work on my own bikes so in the winter I will break down my mountain bikes, clean, grease and replace any parts which need replacing before the Spring arrives. Bike maintenance will decrease the chance you have a mechanical breakdown on the trail on your first Spring ride. What can one get out of doing this activity? One can get super fit, if you push yourself, technically proficient at climbing over logs/rocks and other obstacles and more importantly enjoy the summer outdoors. If you are looking to socialize, this is a good sport to do it with. Most groups adjourn to a local brew pub or tail-gate at the trailhead parking lot after group rides. Is this a solo activity or are there groups? Many view this as a solo activity, I did for many years but have grown to like mixing it up with group rides. Riding by myself allows me to clear my head and focus entirely on something physical. Riding with groups allows me to compare myself with others, kick butt and also have my butt kicked by better riders. The only way to really improve and get better is to ride with others who are better. Where are some of your favorite places to ride?
24 - www.fiestaDCmagazine.com /August 2014
Maryland is home to many excellent places. For those just getting into it and want something relatively easy, there are many paved paths such as the BWI Loop, Rock Creek Trail and Crescent Trail but they tend to also be used by walkers, runners and roller-bladers. For those beginners who want to try an easy trail, the C&O Canal Trail that runs along the Potomac a good beginner trail. For those intermediates who want something a little more challenging, there is Schaeffer Farms in Germantown and Patapsco near Baltimore. For some world-class mountain biking, there is The Frederick Watershed and Gambrill State Park which are primarily for more advanced and expert riders. Do you worry about injuries? Do you get many injuries? I worry about injuries all the time but most can be avoided. The first thing is to make sure you have the bike adjusted appropriately to fit your body. For most of the trails mentioned above, the key is to ride in control, you have to be able to stop...before you hit another rider, or a tree. One increases the chance of injury of you decide to leave the ground and try jumping. But if you stay on the ground and make sure you can quickly and easily put one foot down, you can significantly reduce the chance of injury. Have you ever wrecked your bike? No I have not completely totaled my bike (touch wood) but I tend to be pretty ‘low impact’ on my equipment. The risk of damage again increases with leaving the ground and rider weight. Some damage such a derailleurs getting ripped off by low tree branches will be inevitable if you ride long enough but it is part and parcel of bike maintenance, just as in a car, there are moving parts which will wear out (brakes/clutch) and will need replacement over time if you use it enough. What’s your favorite thing about doing this activity? Getting up and over rocks/logs others cannot make and getting up steep climbs. Can anyone do it? Yes, anyone can do it, they just need the will and desire to do it. Ken Low
Victor Martinez Fit For Autism event at Colosseum Gym in Columbia Md.
“Fit For Autism” is an awareness and fundraiser event in support of Autism Speaks. The Victor Martinez “Fit For Autism” gathering is usually enjoyable, but this year it was extra special. We had more pro body builders come out to meet and greet everyone and to help run the event. IFBB Pros Victor Martinez, Jon De La Rosa, Marco Rivera and Aaron Clark attended with a special appearance by IFBB Pro Lisa Lopez. She was there to enjoy the festivities but ended up staying to work out and talk to everyone. While Victor’s professional accomplishments are widely celebrated in bodybuilding magazines and on the internet, Victor wants to actively use his bodybuilding celebrity to help bring attention to a very personal issue. Victor is the father of four children, two of whom, his 8 and 16year old sons, both have autism. For this fundraiser we have fitness challenges. The challenges were: Bench Press, Squats, Dead Lifts and Pull-Ups. The competition winners were determined by a combination of monetary donations raised and total score from the fitness challenge events. Every dollar that they collected and every rep that the challenger did was counted as 1 point towards their total score. Stacey Wagner won over all, with a prize trip to NY to work out with the Pros. Stacey had 23 pull-ups, 100 squats, 40 deadlifts, 20 bench presses, and brought in $635 dollars in donations. If you read last month’s issue Stacey was featured in the Health section. Stacey is a personal trainer and Pilates instructor. Gabriel Wyant took second, bringing in roughly $550 in donations. Gabriel was also kind enough to raffle off a one-of-a-kind BSN-edition Isobag, signed by 2012 Mr. Olympia Flex Lewis. Gabriel had 24 pull ups, 102 squats, 35 deadlifts, and 52 bench presses. MJ Jendrossek took 3rd with 14 pull ups, 130 squats, 51 deadlifts, 26 bench presses and $225 in donations.Kimberly Webster took 4th with 10 pull ups, 100 squats, 21 bench presses and $100 donations.
Nikki Johnston dominated the majority of the reps competitions, hitting an overhand pull-up for 26, a 135lbs squat for 96 reps, a 115lbs bench press for 40 reps, and a 135lbs deadlift 70 reps! She rounded out the top 5, with a $100 donation from Colosseum personal training client Lou Ebert. Other notables for the day: Rachael Pecoraro 258 total reps, Frank Kargbo 150 total reps, Jason Sandoval 126 total reps, Steve Rovelstad 125 total reps, Triston Cooper 91 total reps, and a special appearance by Chaz Sutton, who knocked out a 225lbs bench for 43 reps! After the winners were chosen and congratulated and most of the crowd had gone home the big boys of body building ended the day by working out together with a few of the local boys, David Johnston, competitor and personal trainer, and Stephen Sessa, competitor. I, myself, got the thrill of a lifetime to be able to hang out and talk to the guys one on one, and do some body work on each pro while watching the others work up a sweat only a few feet away. They ended the session with a pose down. It was nice to see the local boys were able to hold their own against these giants. So proud! All in all, everyone had a great time…even the pros said they really enjoyed it. They will be back again next year if not sooner. Colosseum Gym is a local Maryland gym for serious fitness.

somewhat of a local anthem for the Hispanic American community. In 2010 Botta released “Radio Universal”, a surprisingly mature record for an independent band with epic songs and structural depths and unlimited access to a couple of studios Botta had the opportunity to produce this record to their liking. Gomez, who produced and mixed the album remarks “it was a blessing and a curse to have unlimited studio access, we would spend days obsessing over a guitar track or a snare flavor!” the result however was a very well put together record that will play well through the years. In 2012 Botta joined forced with local celebrity and multiplatinum
producer Jim Ebert, recording and releasing Cupido; incredibly power ballads and bluesy tunes with melancholic but realistic views of love and relationships making this possibly their best record to date. Currently Botta can be seen in the DMV area playing select shows and is finishing their 4th “The Boy and The Sea”, a concept record to be released at the end of October this year. Carlitos Danger

Guardians of the Galaxy is a 2014 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name, produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It is the tenth installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film is directed by James Gunn, who wrote the screenplay with Nicole Perlman, and features an ensemble cast including Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close, and Benicio del Toro. In Guardians of the Galaxy, Peter Quill forms an uneasy alliance with a group of extraterrestrial misfits who are on the run after stealing a coveted orb.
Movie Reviews
Screenwriter Nicole Perlman began working on the screenplay in 2009. Producer Kevin Feige first publicly mentioned Guardians of the Galaxy as a potential film in 2010, and Marvel Studios announced that the film was in active development at the San Diego Comic-Con International in July 2012. Gunn was hired to write and direct the film that September. In February 2013, Pratt was hired to play Peter Quill / Star-Lord, and the supporting cast was filled out over the next several months. Filming began in July 2013 at Shepperton Studios, England with filming continuing in London before wrapping up in October 2013. Post-production finished on July 7, 2014. n 1988, following his mother’s death, a young Peter Quill is abducted from Earth by the Ravagers, a group of space pirates led by Yondu Udonta. Twenty-six years later on the planet Morag, Quill steals an orb only to be intercepted by Korath, a subordinate to the fanatical Kree, Ronan. Although Quill escapes with the orb, Yondu discovers his theft and issues a bounty for his capture while Ronan sends the assassin Gamora after the orb. When Quill attempts to sell the orb on the Nova Corps home world Xandar, Gamora ambushes him and steals it. A fight ensues, drawing in a pair of bounty hunters: the genetically engineered raccoon Rocket, and the tree-like humanoid Groot. The Nova Corps arrives and arrests the group, imprisoning them in the Kyln. A powerful inmate, Drax, attempts to kill Gamora due to her association with Ronan, who killed his family. Quill dissuades him by saying that Gamora can bring Ronan to him. Gamora reveals that she has betrayed Ronan, unwilling to let him use the orb’s power to destroy entire planets such as Xandar. Learning that Gamora has a buyer for the orb, Rocket, Quill, Groot, and Gamora work together to escape the Kyln. Elsewhere, Ronan meets with the titan Thanos to discuss his daughter Gamora’s betrayal and the loss of the orb. Accompanied by Drax, Quill’s group escapes the Kyln in his ship— the Milano—and flee to Knowhere, a remote
criminal outpost in space built in the giant severed-head of a celestial. A drunken Drax summons Ronan, while the rest of the group meet Gamora’s contact, Taneleer Tivan. Tivan opens the orb, revealing an Infinity Stone, an item of immeasurable power that destroys all but the most powerful beings who wield it. Suddenly, Tivan’s tormented assistant grabs the Stone, triggering an explosion that engulfs his collection. Ronan arrives and easily defeats Drax, while the others flee by ship, pursued by Ronan’s followers and Gamora’s sister Nebula. Nebula destroys Gamora’s ship, leaving her floating in space, and Ronan’s forces leave with the sphere. Quill contacts Yondu before following Gamora into space, giving her his helmet to survive; Yondu arrives and retrieves the pair. Rocket, Drax, and Groot threaten to attack Yondu’s ship to rescue them, but Quill negotiates a truce by convincing Yondu that they can recover the orb. The group agrees that facing Ronan means certain death, but that they must stop him from using the Infinity Stone to destroy the galaxy. On Ronan’s ship, the Dark Aster, Ronan embeds the Stone in his warhammer, taking its power for himself. He contacts Thanos, threatening to kill him after the destruction of Xandar; hateful of her adopted father, Nebula allies with Ronan.
uses his empowered warhammer to destroy the Nova Corps fleet. Drax kills Korath, and Gamora defeats Nebula (who escapes) and unlocks Ronan’s chambers, but the group finds themselves outmatched by his power until Rocket crashes the Milano through the Dark Aster and into Ronan. The damaged Dark Aster crash lands on Xandar, with Groot sacrificing himself to shield the group. Ronan emerges from the wreck and prepares to destroy Xandar, but Quill distracts him, allowing Drax and Rocket to destroy Ronan’s warhammer. Quill grabs the freed Stone, and with Gamora, Drax, and Rocket sharing its burden, they use it to destroy Ronan. In the aftermath, Quill tricks Yondu into taking a container supposedly containing the Stone, then gives the real Stone to the Nova Corps. As the Ravagers leave Xandar, Yondu remarks that it turned out well that they did not deliver Quill to his father. Quill’s group, now known as the Guardians of the Galaxy, have their criminal records expunged, and Quill learns that he is only half-human, his father being part of an ancient, unknown species. Quill finally opens the last present he received from his mother; a cassette tape filled with her favorite songs. The Guardians leave in the rebuilt Milano along with a sapling cut from Groot.
On Xandar, the Dark Aster is confronted by Yondu’s fleet, the Nova Corps, and Quill’s group, which breaches the Dark Aster. Ronan August 2014 / www.fiestaDCmagazine.com - 45
