My name is Alec S. Cosing. I received my B.A in Graphic & Media Design. I am a four-time dean’s List student at Marymount University, with a cumulative GPA of over 3.5. I found my passion for the visual and performing arts at the age of 14. I have had the blessing of attending the VCU Summer Arts Intensive of 2016, where I was able to work with graphic design professionals, in the corporate world, to shape my conceptual and contemporary works. With the help of such experience and my high school art teachers, Amy Saylor, Marco J Rando, and Matthew Ravenstahl, I had the honor of being the photographer for the NOVA Maker’s Faire and the Reston Youth Triathlon, for two years each. My collegiate work at Marymount University hasn’t only advanced my artistic style but has aided my technical writing skills. This has been possible with the devoted help from professors like Bridget Murphy, Yathrib Ragsdale, and Kathleen Knee.

TIPS FOR A BIKINI-READY BODY!

*Don’t drink fruit juices or juicebased products while “dieting”. Get your nutrition from calories you chew rather then swallow.

*Shoot for 25-35 g of fiber per day.

*If you get hungry, eat a few ounces of protein to tide you over until your next meal.

*Eat at least two servings of fish per week to get healthy fats.

*Spice up your food with red pepper, which boosts metabolism.

*Drizzle sugar-free syrup over cooked carrots for a sweet treat.

*Drink green tea liberally—it helps burn fat.

*Try no to let yourself get bored, stressed out or depressed, if possible. Try yoga, meditation, and

herbs such as kava and ginseng for stress. Regular exercise, journaling and supplements such as fish, St. Johns wort and 5-HTP can help alleviate depression.

*Outwait your food cravings. They generally last no longer then 10 minutes.

*Distract yourself with a nonfood related activity, such as exercising, reading, pursuing a favorite hobby, listening to music, writing letters, surfing the internet (like you are now) or soaking in a hot bath.

*Make a list of 25 things to do rather then eat, and keep it handy for times when you feel tempted to eat (when you shouldn’t).

*Freeze strawberries and other berries. They take longer to eat and provide a candy-like treat.

ART & CULTURE

Torcuato Zamora Herrada, Spanish Citizen, born in the town of Dona Maria three villas Almeria.

torcuato a talented classical guitar professional specializing in Flamenco an immigrant residing in Maryland; was honored with the medal of merit by the king of Spain, Philip VI upon request by the Spanish embassy in DC for his contribution in promoting the art of flamenco in the U.S

Flamenco is alive and well in the DMV area. Performance groups like Furia Flamenca continue to bring Spanish music and dance to eager aficionados and students. A recently formed cultural organization called Torcuart endeavors to contribute to the cultural landscape in DC, Maryland and Virginia with phenomenal flamenco performances, concerts, literature, visual arts and poetry among other activities. But at the heart of this movement there is a man, a Pioneer of all things Spanish!; the guitarist Torcuato Zamora.

On a sunny Saturday morning a month ago we drove to Silver Springs Maryland to interview and get to know this man. Torcuato ,now 89, welcomed us into his home with a warm abrazo and proceeded to tell us his life stories as we walked by pictures, paintings and posters on the walls. Stories of a sad childhood as his father became a political prisoner at the end of the Spanish civil war leaving his mother and 7 kids evicted from their Almeria ranch.

Stories of migrations first, with his mother and siblings to Barcelona to be close to relatives and find a meager factory job to support her starving children and then as a young man to Luxembourg where he earned respect as a classic guitar instructor and performer.

Torcuato’s space tells a story of his journey and life. His colorful home contains a teaching studio, a large Spanish tile top table (where tapas and good wine never cease to flow), a performance stage, a store for flamenco shoes and attires...it feels more like a museum, chock-full of Spanish, souvenirs, posters and mementos among pictures of himself with different political leaders, presidents, dignitaries, the Spanish Royal family and more. Torcuato, this humble man with a

sad story, an immigrant, has done more to expose the beautiful sound of a Spanish guitar and the art of flamenco in our area than anybody else. He came to the US with Susan his red haired American wife. They met in Luxembourg where she was working at the embassy , she became her student and girlfriend and when her two year assignment was over, they embarked on a transatlantic ship towards New York. They settled in DC in the 60s ,started a family and Torcuato continued playing guitar in restaurants like el Bodegon, el Caribe, el Caminante, Torremolinos and Andalucia as well as in multiple theaters and embassies.

He first toured Europe with his guitar and then the Americas, Torcuato Zamora has toured the U.S with the Jose Molina Spanish dance company and opened the Spanish guitar Academy in Silver Springs Maryland. He was honored with the medal of merit by the Spanish embassy in the US for promoting the culture of flamenco in this country it was given to him by his majesty King Philip VI.

The maestro gifted me with his book El Cortijo,a brief memoir of his tumultuous life. I cannot put in this little article all of the details of his journey but what stands out is his passion for music, that was his first language:the guitar ! he started performing in concerts at the young age of 15...Zamora found more appreciation among strangers than in his own country ; an incredibly talented and disciplined musician, full of humor, a genuine welcoming person who has lived his life to the fullest ...what a legacy of Love! what dedication to his art! If interested in attending the Flamenco events in the DMV area don’t hesitate to check into www.torcuart.com or www. Furia-Flamenca.com

Celebrity Interviews

Celebrity chef

Pepe Moncayo

From CETT and without a former degree, Pepe’s hard working ethics, talent and creativity was sought after so he began his collaboration with multiple prestigious restaurants in the vibrant Mediterranean coastal city. From Barcelona’s Gran casino, to via Benetto and to the city’s elite Equestrian private club. He ended up in Can Fabes, the most famous three Michelin star restaurant in Barcelona, under the direction of celebrity chef Santi Santamaria. From there, he went to work for Javier and Sergio Torres in the high-rise Hesperia hotel restaurant, but it was Santamaria, who called Pepe Moncayo back to open his restaurant in Singapore. Santamaria was an ambitious and visionary restaurateur.

He opened restaurants in Madrid, Toledo, Dubai and then Singapore with Moncayo. At the time Pepe was a young, single, and adventurous, chef so he embraced the Singapore adventure. There, he met his now wife Aisha who was managing a city restaurant at the time; they started a family and then, another untimely death changed his life. Santamaria, his mentor, passed away unexpectedly of a heart attack at the age of 53, all the restaurants eventually closed. It was the year 2011, then one of his admiring customers, an investor, reached out to Pepe to offer a partnership and fund the opening of his own restaurant in Singapore.

Moncayo jumped at the opportunity, and with his wife, they opened Bam!, a Japanese Spanish Fusion Cuisine Restaurant that continues to be the rage.

The couple then seized the opportunity to bring the Bam concept to DC. They opened Crane in 2019 five weeks before the pandemic, survived the storm of closures and regulations, and in 2021 chef Pepe Moncayo received a Michelin star which then catapulted the restaurant into even more fame.

The dynamic couple always wanted to bring Singaporean food to the US. At the soul of Singapore (that is what Jiwa Singapora means) they brought back the recipes from Aisha’s family who had worked in the traditional Hawkers or open market restaurants for generations. The restaurant embraces the best of street food, traditional hawker dishes and then Moncayos version of classic Singaporean dishes.

Jiwa Singapora is a must stop at the Galleria mall. Go check out the sculpture of the merlion, the official mascot of Singapore with the head of a lion and the body of a fish; enjoy a Cocktail Singapore girl " their signature bright violet cocktail with cucumber infused gin, lemon, ginger and ube air or just jump into the delicious fragrant food I promise it is an experience you will not forget.

MIGHTYMAGAZINE 27

Jiwa Singapura is Pepe Moncayo’s third restaurant, located on the third floor of the Galleria mall in Tysons Virginia. The soul of Singapore brings you the best of that exotic cuisine. Before interviewing the chef busied in the frenzy of the restaurants open kitchen wesavored an unforgettable lunch. We started with small plates satay chicken and spring rolls then large plates Char Kway Teow was my favorite yellow noodles with Chinese sausage, shrimp and squid, some stir fry unlike any other and amazing shrimp in a coconut sauce and duck eggs. With the flavors still dancing in my mouth we moved to the sophisticated open bar area where Pepe Moncayo started answering questions.

28 MARCH2023

“Jiwa delivers an unparalleled dining experience for people with a passion for new flavors and cultures.

Pepe’s experiments in the kitchen began out of necessity at the young age of 13. His beautiful mother died of cancer, the father worked long hours at a car factory and his older brother had joined the military service at 19 which at the time was mandatory in Spain. Pepe was left in charge of the kitchen, he had to cook for his seven year old sister and father.

Pepe loved every aspect of it, he found his passion! He loved roaming the open markets in Barcelona purchasing the freshest ingredients. He enjoyed going to the seafood market by the water and became quite adept at cooking for his family.

When he finished high school, he joined the prestigious CETT; Barcelona’s school of tourism, hospitality and gastronomy. The college format alternated one week in the classroom setting with one week in the kitchen. He quickly realized that he was falling asleep through the lectures, but he was alive and vibrant the week that they had to do the practices in the kitchen. He now regrets moving into the kitchen, and completely foregoing the theoretical part of his education but quickly, at the age of 19, Pepe was running the kitchen of the prestigious school, and his former companions became his students in the kitchen.

Urban photography

Focusing on the study of objects and elements in urban environments, urban photography usually emphasises the surroundings and uses them to make statements about time and place. People are not always included in the images, unlike in urbanphotography.

1.

Colour

Great urban photographs don’t need to be black and white. We love the use of colour in this vibrant shot from Cathy Dupuy. It has great composition and is a really great example of well controlled exposure. The use of just two contrasting colours is fantastic.

2.

Framing

Countless details can be found in cities. Always be on the lookout for interesting shapes, backgrounds and foregrounds. And don’t forget the detail in crafting your framing.

This is a really interesting composition from Gareth John Stark. The use of the fencing as the foreground in this shot shows great technique. Capturing a straight horizon would help to give this image even more strength.

3. Movement

Cities are busy places, so try to capture the movement of people and vehicles. Panning is often overlooked as a photography technique but following your subject with your camera, so that they stay in focus but the background is blurred with movement, is a great way to capture motion.

This really interesting action shot from Ian Horne just shows what can be achieved when being in the right place, at the right time. This image has perfect panning technique, creating a real sense of movement.in this shot shows great technique. Capturing a straight horizon would help to give this image even more strength.

4.

Shapes

To create a flow for the viewers eyes to follow, it’s always good to keep the basics of composition in your mind, such as having clear foreground, middle ground, and background.

Additionally, this image by Mac Oberoi is a fantastic example of an urban landscape. The silhouettes of the buildings in the foreground form striking shapes and frame the Chrysler Building nicely.

5.

People

People can make fantastic subjects for urban photos, and blurs the lines with street photography. Big cities are full of characters. It captures a moment perfectly, within an urban environment. The composition and black and white is perfect and adds to the whole feel of the shot.

Sculpture on the Human Form

We inspire creativity and reward excellence in the field of we

Have you ever tried on a dress made of doylies? How about dressing as an angler fish? Or even making an outfit made of fluff longer than your hair. ManneqArt is a local competition that rivals New York fashion week in outrageousness even on a budget. This competition is a place where creatives rule.Their mission is to inspire creativity and “reward excellence in the field of wearable art.” It’s perfect for those who are interested in art, fashion, or crafts.

How It Started

The creator of ManneqArt, Lee Anderson, is from New Zealand. She started up the competition in 2012 because she wanted to bring a creative outlet from home to the United States. The organization now comprises many volunteers. Lee Anderson also started her own boutique, which sells comfortable artsy clothing which tones down the boldness of the competition fashion for everyday wear.

-Awards and Rules

Winners of this competition will have their pieces displayed in the interactive art museum, Doodle Hatch, until November and ManneqArt will feature their costumes in the yearly calendar. They will hold ManneqArt 2023 on May 27th through 29 th . This year’s theme is fantasy and participants must wear their piece to the Fantasy WOOD Festival. In this wonderfully weird and wacky competition, people of all ages can submit costumes. Keep in mind the outfits may be tough to party in because participants don’t need to be able to sit.

-Past Concoctions

Look out for Robert Reed, who consistently goes above and beyond for each competition. Last year, he entered five projects. Scarlet O’Hara is pictured here. Which is a dress based upon the film “Gone With the Wind.” Another inventive work from previous years is Steel swallow made by Bozenna Bogucka. Her metal mesh dress won the Imagine Artwear Award.

Become more than fashionable become fabulous!
