Can Hunter-Reay Repeat in 2013? 2012 was quite the year for last year’s Grand Prix of Baltimore presented by SRT champion, Ryan Hunter-Reay. Hunter-Reay raced the No. 28 DHL/Sun Drop Chevrolet car for Andretti Autosport and emerged as a title contender mid-season. During the 2012 Grand Prix of Baltimore presented by SRT, Hunter-Reay won the 75-lap street-course race, crossing the finish line 1.4391 seconds ahead of Team Penske driver Ryan Briscoe. This victory for Hunter-Reay positioned him right behind series leader Will Power. Hunter-Reay was then able to claim victory, winning the series championship at Fontana, California. Now in 2013, all eyes are on the reigning champion for the IZoD IndyCar Series Championship. by: Claudia Ordoñez The Internationally recognized Salsa performer Gilberto Santa Rosa packed the newly renovated Howard Theatre on Sunday, August 25 with the help of El Zol Radio, Washington DC’s top Spanish language radio station. local event Interested in watching homemade, human-powered flying machines get pushed off of a multi-story flight deck and, quite possibly, crash into the Potomac River? Red Bull may be hosting the event for you. It’s called the National Red Bull Flugtag competition and it takes place on September 21 in five different cities: DC, Chicago, Miami, Dallas/Ft. Worth and Long Beach. It has been taking place for 2 years now all over the globe and, each year, the creations get more outrageous...and entertaining.

In many instances, the machines travel a fair amount of distance, usually around 20-50 feet, before landing smoothly in the water. The current record held is 207 feet! But there are many who do not even get close to the average distance as the machines get pushed over the edge of the flight deck and plummet straight down into the water below, resulting in a more entertaining show. Teams are not only judged on distance traveled, but also on creativity and showmanship, making for some very interesting submissions. Some of the craziest designs have included the “Flying Purple People Eater” (it didn’t get very far) and “Santa and his Sleigh” (the pilot fell out before it even hit the water). Since winning takes more than distance, teams usually wear ridiculous costumes, perform skits and even create their own music, resulting in quite the show! The list of judges has not been announced 8 < FIESTA DC MAGAZINE•AUGUST

The teams are made up of a maximum of five people and each team devotes months to planning and building their machines. When competition day finally arrives, the team pushes their machine, along with a pilot, off of a 28-foot high flight deck, bracing for the three-story fall. If you were thinking of getting a team together to compete, the deadline was June 1. However, you can still scope out the action this year!

yet, but it will consist of local athletes and celebrities. The Red Bull Flugtag website includes a list of teams from all over the country. Check out the team names, machine designs and bios to get an idea of what to expect! Some examples include Rockin lincoln, a concept conceived during happy hour a week before the application was due, Duck hunt (the pilot will be dressed as the iconic dog) and Viking army SC with a design made to look like a Viking Ship. The DC event is being held at Southpointe, adjacent to the Gaylord Hotel & Convention Center. The first flight takes off at 2 p.m., but the event opens at noon. Showing up early has its perks as spectators can meet the teams and get to see the machines up close before they begin their plunge. Many of the machines won’t survive the competition so get there early to take a look! Tickets will be on sale starting August 1. Individual tickets will be $15 and a four-pack will be $50. Only 8,000 tickets will be sold and there will be no second release or tickets sold on-site. Be sure to buy a ticket quickly! For those driving to the event, ticket holders will be offered access to select parking areas with shuttle service to the event. There will be three lots: Eisenhower Metro Station/Hoffman Town Center, primarily for those coming from Virginia, Rosecroft Raceway, primarily for those coming from Maryland, and finally the National Harbor Plateau for those needing ADA parking for those who have special needs. Shuttles will be running non-stop throughout the day to all lots. For those coming by metro, get off at the Eisenhower Metro station to grab a shuttle. For more information regarding the event including teams competing, stories of other Flugtag events and an overall history, visit Red Bull’s website at: www. redbullflugtagusa.com.

Here is a Brief Summary of my Organo Gold Study Concept Created by: Fernando J. Escaffi

When The Founder Mr. Bernie Chua CEO of Organo Gold learned from his brother who is a scientist, about the wonderful benefits of Ganoderma, he thought to himself; “Wow, how can I deliver this treasure of the earth to the people of the world?” That thought became the Mission Statement of Organo Gold “Bringing the treasures of the earth to the people of the world” The Hook Thinking a bit deeper he said “If I put it in caplets, it will end up in the cabinet of good intentions where most vitamins end up, and people will not consume it because of lack of discipline. Then he said, “Wait a minute... It’s hard to build a habit, but it’s also hard to break it! So, why not infuse it into a habit? Then, he studied the 3 most common legal habits; Cigarettes, Alcohol, and Coffee and these are his discoveries: Coffee is the second most consumed beverage in the planet, next to water (It’s needless to mention that you need water to make coffee) so it’s an Unfair comparison! Coffee it’s the second largest traded commodity in the world, next to oil (Do people complain when gas prices go up? When was the last time you heard someone complaining about coffee prices going up?) Cars run on gas, people run on coffee. Which is a bigger Market? 2.25 Billion Cups of coffee are consumed every single day (no

wonder why coffee became the leading product to deliver Ganoderma in Organo Gold) Coffee is allowing for the Mission to be accomplished successfully. In less than 5 years they reached officially 35 countries. They patented the cultivation process to remove the Odor, Color, and Taste of Ganoderma without losing its health benefits, and then they infused it into a line of massive consumption products like; Delicious gourmet beverages including Coffee, Tea, and Hot Chocolate. Since the word “Gano” means Health, and “Derma” means Skin... They also added Ganoderma to Soap, Tooth Paste, and Body Lotion. They anticipated that most people will take a bath and brush their teeth at least once a day. For those with self-discipline or with serious health issues they also created a line of 4 Nutraceuticals. Without question: The Compensation Package to Distributors, The Products, and The Leadership in Organo Gold are second to none. You can see it in these facts: Organo Gold is currently the No. 1 MLM Momentum Ranking Company in the Planet. http:// www.10incomes.com/page/ mlm-500-momentum-ranks Organo Gold is also the only company with 4 people in the top 10 incomes of the MLM Hall of Fame worldwide. http:// www.10incomes.com/page/topearners-hall-of-fame If you have further questions feel free to contact me at: 703-898-5061 or by E-mail at information@comewin.org

The iconic Colombian Vallenato artist shook the Patriot Center on Wednesday, July 24 with his popular Vallenato and Tropipo music genres. Carlos made a comeback after being out of the music scene, at least in the USA, for close to 8 years. His Corazon Profundo Tour “Como Le Gusta a Mi Pueblo” presented by SBS Entertainment, kicked off in Puerto Rico and hit 8 USA cities ending in Houston, on July 28th. by: Claudia Ordoñez

El Zol Radio, the primary Spanish language radio Station in the DmV filled the Patriot center with more than 6,000 fans dancing the night away to sounds of Colombian vallenato, fused vallenato, rock and pop rhythms. Carlos did not disappoint his fans as he performed most of the favorites, including his latin Grammy award winning song: “Dejame entrar” and his latest #1 Billboard song “Volvi a nacer” as well as other favorites like “Como le Gusta a Tu Cuerpo”. He stayed true to his audience

by playing his classic vallenatos, among them “La hamaca Grande” and “Matilde Lina.” Vives kept his audience glued to the stage not only with his upbeat music, energetic moves and beautiful smile but also with backdrop projections of his lovely hometown of Santa martha and of the beautiful and historic City of Cartagena. He flirted with the audience by staging various interactive onstage appearances, including a marriage proposal to the winners of a Univision television contest as he performed his hit “Volvi a Nacer” to the roar of

the audience. Carlos Vives was the first Colombian to obtain a Grammy from the American Recording Academy and has written over 40 songs and sold over 18 million records. In 1993, Carlos began fusing vallenato, rock, pop and Colombian ethnic rhythms introduced in his album “Clasicos de la Provincia”. This album, with its adopted music style known as Tropipo, became a success in all Latin America, culminating with his hit single “La Gota Fria”. In the same year, he won the Billboard Latin Music Awards for best album.

Celebrated Hawaiian photographer Mo Martinez captures the beauty of innocence By Jeanette Dove

Photography by Mo Martinez ®

Mo Martinez lives for imagination. As an artist, he captures every aspect of beauty, style and grace in today’s top models in the most exotic locations around the world. Whether it’s arousing your senses with Maxim -style bombshells or shooting images synonymous with European fashion, Martinez highlights his artistic approach with today’s edgy and dramatic book.

riginally from Hon olulu, Hawaii, and owner of his Zenitram Productions, Mo Martinez has been photographing the most sensational people for 20 years. “When I was 19, I was anxious to see the world and what it had to offer,” Martinez recalls. He then enlisted in the military, and during his course of service discovered what leads him to where he is today - a passion for photography. Already curious about the photography after seeing his brotherin-law’s black-and-white pictures as a child, Mo started shooting scenery but didn’t find a knack for that Style. He soon moved on to people in their natural settings and local parks, shopping malls and on the street. The only problem, he wasn’t making a cent. Mo knew he needed a new business perspective for his newfound love and responded to an ad for a bikini workshop event looking for photographers. Within three months, he was organizing his own swimsuit workshops by inviting top models form the mainland. This new approach was instantly a huge success. “Photographers and models would come from all over the globe to participate,” Martinez said. With numerous magazines, such as Swimsuit Illustrated, Oxygen Magazine and Playboy requesting his services, Martinez developed a reputation for combining edgy fashioned themes with a twist of dramatic lighting. When “Wild on E!” executive director Maggie Welter saw Mo’s portfolio, she called and ask him to be featured on one of the show’s segments , “Wild On The Big Island” - a program seen by more than 350 million homes around the world. “From there, everything fell into place,” Martinez said. “Celebrities, movie sets and the rest is history.” Mo’s most recent projects include shooting

one of the 14 segments on TV’s newest reality show “The Casinos” under Mark Burnett Productions, the producer responsible for the hits “Survivors” and Donald trump’s “The apprentice.” His segment features the United States Bikini Bowling Team, a sport and genre Mo most treasures. He’s also working with three other publications; shooting the recent Miss Hawaii USA and Miss Hawaii pageants; managing the Hawaiian Islanders, a league football cheerleaders; judging “Dressed to kill,” a series of fashion shows founded and endorsed by former 007 heartthrob Sean Connery; and has also been asked to judge the Hawaiian Tropic regional pageant. Mo even has been contacted by the popular California game show “The Price Is Right” to provide photo services for one of Barker’s beauties. Amidst all his successes, Martinez makes sure to stay close to his roots. To show his dedication to his homeland and help boost Hawaii’s economy, Mo helped orchestrate the state’s first-ever 2000 Modeling Convention, which brought models form New York and Los Angeles. He estimates that in just one day, $40,000 was provided to an array of merchants, vendors and the community. Martinez is a serious photographer who combines art, drama and fashion in his works. He finds that utilizing a combination of outdoor natural lighting and a mini-stroke creates a dramatic effect in his photographs. “It’s not the norm, as you can see in a few of my photos, but it definitely is different when shooting this style,” Martinez said. For Mo, the right style is the one that combines fashion with an artistic edge. Inspired by style icons such as the late Gianni Versace, the European retro wear of LINEA in the latest looks imagine by Donatella Versace, Martinez drives his innovative, sensual style one step further. In one of his most tantalizing

shoots, Martinez procured an executive suite at a hotel and invited several models. Mo combined the high-end attire of Versace and LINEA’s clean-lines gear with the looks of Brazilian supermodel Giselle Bundchen, instantly creating a pure sensation and that “arouses the senses and stimulates hormones in one’s body structure.” For Martinez, sex is simply sex while sensualality is capturing an image that implies sex yet leaves much to the imagination. So what does Mo look for in a model? “Ahh! You hit the right spot,” Martinez said, adding,”I love all women and all women, although not alike, are beautiful in their own way. That is beauty! A model not only has to look good and be healthy, but to be grounded and know her roots. Many times I will see attitudes or users and quickly distanced myself on the individual. I like go-getters who are down to earth and know the value of what it takes to succeed while not forgetting where they came from.” Some photographers pose models to show “nothing but sex.” But to capture a Mo Martinez look, a provocative pose using wardrobe and makeup, is much more sexier than a picture that says “I am all SEX.” Working with top models and major celebrities like Ricky Martin, Bo Derek, Lorenzo Lamas and many others in Hawaii, Australia, Japan, Europe in even Saudi Arabia, Martinez manages to have fun during his shoots. According to Mo, Raye Hollitt, a.k.a. “Zap,” from the “American Gladiators” was one of his most entertaining shoots. “She knew how to have fun with the shoot and we both even horse-played a little on the set,” Martinez said, laughing. “She even put me in a deadlock only because I let her.” For Mo, having fun is what makes things flow smoother and relaxes the models. What truly makes Martinez’s approach to

photography stick out in a highly competitive industry is his passion for making works sensual. With his camera, Mo can capture a model any angle. But it’s his signature pose that defines who he is – when a girl lies on her back turns her hip with her legs crossed, tilts her head way back, and the shot is taken from a low angel head-on. When he shoots outdoors, Martinez prefers tropical settings incorporating earth-tone colors, assuring that nothing takes away from the model and the surroundings. Martinez’s collection is geared for the tropical wear and style. According to Mo, he would eventually like to combine dramatic lighting with a Photoshop effect, something New York-based photographers are using to create a surreal look and mood. Mo’s collection “accentuates the freedom of tropical baring enough to keep you comfortable and at the same time, giving you that sensual edge,” he says. “ I would love to have the opportunity to shoot follow/winter designs but obviously Hawaii doesn’t permit that unless I relocate.” For now, Mo will head off to another shoot in New Zealand where he hears the south island is gorgeous. So off Mo goes, onto another journey, and another chance to showcase his passion and enliven the spirit through style.

The desert sandy color building situated near the corner of Columbia Pike and highland Street in arlington, Virginia is The Pines of Italy restaurant, a well-known local landmark with a history dating back to 1948, when the famous Italian architect Coco conceived and built the structure. It became a popular nightout for many Washingtonian political elites including President Harry Truman, who was a frequent patron, spending his leisure time there mingling with friends and taking puffs of a cigar. Today, Pines of Italy continues that tradition, serving fine wines and delicious foods to its customers in D.C. metropolitan. The restaurant was renovated in 2010 and is currently owned by Mr. Ali Tajalli and his partner Mr. Ali Tati. A friendly welcome gives first-timers a cozy feeling in a family oriented atmosphere. The dining room is casual with a touch of elegant Italian decorations, an array

of carefully arranged dishes on covered tables, and soft music playing background. The menu gives diners a variety of selections, from authentic European wines to delicious Italian dishes. The generous serving portion and beautiful presentation will satisfy any customer’s taste palette. The signature dish is the Capellini di angelo alla monilino, a suave taste of thin pasta sautéed with olive oil and served with large perfectly cooked shrimps, scallops and fresh cherry tomatoes with basil leaves; it will satisfy any food critic. Other excellent dishes include the Veal Scallopini a la Francese and the Pesce Spada a la Griglia. Among the popular appetizers are Steam Clams and Steam mussels sautéed with white wine and soaked with olive oil and garlic red or white sauce. If you love Italian food, want to impress your date, or just want to be pampered, then you must book a reservation here. Prices are inexpensive to moderate.

Things to do Like all of the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Thomas has plenty of opportunities to lounge on the beach or swim in the emerald Caribbean Sea. It also boasts a bountiful duty-free shopping scene – just be prepared to brave the cruise ship crowds. Charlotte Amalie swells with Danish colonial architecture and pirate legends. Visit Blackbeard’s Castle, up Main Street, then work up an appetite by climbing the historic 99 Steps, constructed from the ballast bricks of 18th century Danish ships. Magens Bay, considered one of the most beautiful beaches, is on the north end of St. Thomas where you can relax on the beautiful sand and turquoise water. Take in a round of golf at the world-renowned mahogany Run Golf Course. On the east end, Coral World and Mangrove Lagoon provide glimpses of St. Thomas’ rich marine life. Go snorkeling or simply wade in the lagoon to watch colorful fish swim by. For the adventurer who seeks culture, Fort Christian, a U.S. National landmark, is the oldest standing structure in the Virgin Islands and home to the Virgin Islands Museum, where early island memorabilia and old maps trace the islands’ history. Take a walk in Market Square to see a bustling produce marketplace, once one of the West Indies’ busiest 18th-century slave markets. On nearby Government Hill, looming over Charlotte 18 < FIESTA DC MAGAZINE• August

Amalie, stands Blackbeard’s Castle. Known during colonial times as Skytsborg, this 17th-century fortified tower now serves as a popular restaurant and hotel, a favorite for many vacationers. Located in the hills not far from the heart of Charlotte Amalie, Government House has been the center of government in St. Thomas since the mid 1860s.
