Eddie Palmieri
W
What better way to spend an evening than to be entertained by the greatest Latin Jazz legend, Eddie Palmieri and his orchestra! It was a delight for me to see this great iconic musician once again. I have had the pleasure of seeing Eddie Palmieri and his amazing orchestras in Cali, Colombia, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Kansas City and various times in NYC. Mr.Palmieri is known as one of the finest Latin jazz pianists of the past 50 years. He is a bandleader of both Salsa and Latin jazz orchestras as well as an arranger, composer and Jazz Master. Palmieri skillfully plays the piano to the rhythm and melody of jazz while
By: Claudia Ordóñez leading his orchestra to the sounds of Latin music. Eddie Palmieri has a discography that includes 36 titles and has been awarded 10 Grammy Awards. He was also just recently given the prestigious Trustees award by the Latin Grammys on November 2013. The Bethesda Blues and Jazz Supper Club in Maryland was the perfect venue for Palmieri to make his presenc in the DMV. This was my first time at this venuel and I was delighted by the cozy and elegant art deco setting. This theatre, a National Historical Registry Property has just recently gone through an extensive renovation
that has left the theatre similar to what it was when it opened its doors in the late 1930’s. There didn’t seem to be a bad seat in the entire place and the acoustics were excellent. The only drawback was that the place was packed and the dance floor was filled with tables to accommodate Palmieri’s admirers. It seemed that most of the audience wanted to get on their feet and dance…some wiggled in their chairs as others stood by their tables to sneak a move or two. Everyone had a great time however as they were swept away by the incredible Latin fusion sounds of The Great Eddie.

Deep in the heart of English countryside lies the village of Gladbury. Legend has it every 25 years an angel visits the village candlemaker and touches one candle. Whoever lights this candle receives a miracle on Christmas Eve. But in 1890, at the dawn of the electric age, this centuries old legend may end. When David, a progressive young minister, arrives, the villagers discover a new formula for miracles. While David’s quest to modernize Gladbury sets him at odds with the old world candlemaker, he finds an ally in Emily Barstow.

Wake up in the morning listening to your favorite radio station! FIESTA MAGAZINE, here we are at El Zol Radio, The number one radio station in the DMV interviewing a very favorite and famous persons, Pedro Biaggi and Patricia De Lima. By Frank Mareno FIESTA- Pedro Pedro, Thank you for your time. We’d like to know who is Pedro Biaggi and what it is that you do? PEDRO- I was born in Guanica, Puerto Rico. It has taken me a lifetime to get here. This is the dream job that I dreamed doing since I was a little boy. I always dreamed that I was going to be on the radio but at some point I thought that it would be impossible but my dream came true. FIESTA- What is your position at the radio station. Any special programs that you are involved with? PEDRO- Yes, I am an animator for Pedro Biaggi in the morning for El Zol Radio 107.9FM from 5ª-10ª M-F. We cover Virginia, Washington and Maryland FIESTA- What are the projects or vision that you are planning moving forward that you’d like your listeners and our readers to know about?
PEDRO- We are going to be involved with Carnival De San Miguel in November. It’s huge Carnival in San Miguel.. I also have a television program called DC Con Tigo. Where you will be able to see what we lived at the Carnival. Every week we present what we live here, in the radio and in the DMV. FIESTA- You are going to El Salvador to do a live transmission from there? PEDRO- Exactly, we will be transmitting live from San Miguel, El Salvador.. We have been doing that for the last 8 years.. I was there for the first 6 years and now I’m ready to go back. I love to be in Salvador and especially in San Miguel. FIESTA- Pedro, what do you like best about your job with the radio station or what do you prefer to produce? PEDRO- What I like most about this is the opportunity that I have to give. I
14 < www.fiestaDCmagazine.com - DECEMBER
have a mission in my life and that is to serve mankind. I am blessed with this job because I can use this medium to be the voice of many people, the voice that can get things done to benefit others and I can do that through this job. FIESTA- Thank you Pedro…. We are very lucky to have a very decisive, passionate and energetic Pedro Biaggi! Do you have any specific advice that you want to give to Fiesta magazine or to our Readers? PEDRO- We should unite as a race. We shouldn’t be so divided. We shouldn’t be from Venezuela, from Argentina, Bolivia, Etc. We should unite….We want immigration reform.. We need to unite in order to get things done.
Photo: Frank Mareno DECEMBER - www.fiestaDCmagazine.com >15
FIESTA- Thank you for your time Patricia. You bring so much happiness in your radio station to the DMV. I’d like to ask you who is Patricia De Lima? PATRICIA-Yes, I am Patricia De Lima, very Venezuelan and down to earth. I want to be very successful at work. I am very much a family woman. Family is very important to me. This is not really my childhood dream as my colleagues made fun of my voice when I was growing up because I had an awful voice. I wanted to do more TV but I discovered radio when I was at the University. At first it was just part time, and then I was only on air on Saturdays then on Sundays until they changed Reina and I to the morning show, then Reina went to New York and I was left alone as the cohost to Pedro Biaggi in the morning. It is a huge honor for me to work with the team that we have and to be working
in Washington DC, the Capital of the USA. FIESTA- Yes, this is a great City with many cultural events and many tourists as well. Patricia, Is there a specific subject that you like to talk about or express on the radio. PATRICIA- The truth is that I don’t have a specific subject. My job and the job of many is to inform, entertain and educate, and that is what we base our program on every day. We make people laugh and cry… sometimes we cry as well with the various stories that we air. It’s a very complex job. As you know, I do “Lady P” and “Tumbo Patricia”, and I also do the traffic and the news. I have done many different facets. What I like about this job is that every day is different. There is no specific format that we have to follow, I am simply me and I am here to entertain and inform.
16 < www.fiestaDCmagazine.com - DECEMBER
FIESTA- Is there anything that you would like to talk about or tell our readers? Any advice that you would like to leave us with? PATRICIA- I don’t really have any advice per se other than we should not forget where we are from and that we should love, admire and adore our family and our friends and we should work. That is why we are here… to live the American dream which sometimes makes as work all day but it is worth it. I congratulate you for your magazine and people should follow you because you have a great magazine. FIESTA- Thank you Patricia, for you time and your words. We are very thankful to everyone. Our readers will be very happy with this. PATRICIA- I LOVE YOU ALLL (KISSES) ( MUAH!)

Fashion Event > by: Linh Vu November 20th, 2013 marked the very first Peruvian fashion show in Washington D.C. The event took place in the Grand Hyatt hotel’s grand auditorium room on the ground floor. The doors welcomed hundreds of guests at 6 PM by staff and ladies dressed in bright, colorful Peruvian traditional wool dresses. Excitement and curiosity filled the room as the guests waited to be seated in the auditorium room. The atmosphere was lively with chatters and giggles embracing the entire room while guest zipped the renowned Pisco Sour drinks. The slightly sour Peruvian signature mixed drinks seemed to warm up everyone escaping November’s freezing temperature outside. The drinks were not the only thing that warmed up the crowd. Thefashion show showcased cozy and warm clothing like sweaters and jackets. This fashion show highlighted Alpaca wool production exclusively in the Peruvian fashion joined by several local Peruvian textile designers and brought together by the renowned Peruvian Embassy in the United States, the Peruvian Association of Exporters, BIZ USA

Peru & Americas, and PROMPERU. Alpaca wool is known to offer several benefits: wide range of 24 natural colors and excellence in keeping warm. The fibers are water resistant and are hypoallergenic. The list can go on however. The designers topped the guests’ expectations of Alpaca wool with far more fascinating display of styles, textiles, and designs of jackets, dresses and accessories. Guests were entertained by a series of fashions display in varied styles made by Alpaca wool from modernized and stylish jackets providing coziness and comfortableness to the traditional and stunning nigh gowns made for formal events. Designers introduced a range of different styles from sophisticated office attires to playful evening dresses that provoked many oohs ahhs from the audience. Guests were entertained by not only the fashion catwalks but also by many live musical performances that brought a little of Peru onto the stage.

THE SAN BLAS ISLANDS WITH THE KUNA INDIANS I have always dreamt of going to the San Blas Islands to visit the Kuna Indians who have lived there for over 150 years and still hold their old traditions. I am delighted to share with you the experience I had in one of the most beautiful places in the world with the beautiful Kuna. I arrived in Panama City early one April afternoon on a direct 5-hour flight from JFK via Copa Airlines. After a few days visiting the amazing Panama Canal and the City sites, I hopped on one of the daily flights that leave from Panama City to El Porvenir, one of the main islands in the archipelago. The 20-minute flight is truly spectacular with amazing views of the clear blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the vast array of islands sprinkled sparingly throughout. There are approximately 360+ islands on the archipelago with only 49+/- of these islands inhabited. The other deserted islands are filled with tropical palm trees, white sandy beaches and clear blue sparkling water. We landed on a small airstrip in Porvenir nestled between palm trees and surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. I walked across the airstrip to The Hotel Porvenir, the only hotel on the island, where I planned on spending the next 3 days. The hotel is on the beach and literally a few steps away from the airstrip. I quickly realized that I was the only guest staying at this hotel and everyone else was boarding canoes to take them to other islands. I didn’t want to stay in this island alone for 3 days with the hotel owners, administrative staff and the police station across the way. Luckily, I had met Kelly, an English woman on the plane who was also travelling alone and was waiting for her canoe to take her to her island. She suggested I stay on the island she was headed to instead and assured me that it would be much more livelier there, plus she had stashed a bottle of rum away for the evening that she was willing to share! We arrived at ‘Kelly’s Island’ after a 10-minute boat ride and a $10 fee. Franklyn’s Island is approximately 2000 sq ft and is absolutely gorgeous! It’s divided in two separate areas, Tubasekina and Senidup managed by 2 separate Kuna families. They both have approximately 12 smallthatched roof cabanas with soft sand floors and foam mattresses. Palm trees and white sandy beaches surround the cabanas and of course the beautiful clear blue water of the ocean can be seen on all sides of the island. They cost $24 a night per person with all three meals included. The food wasn’t that good at first but we quickly learned that a few extra dollars would get the fishermen to go out and bring back lobster and/or fresh fish.

BETHESDA BLUES AND JAZZ SUPPER CLUB By: Claudia Ordóñez
There is no better place to spend a nice romantic evening listening to music over dinner than the newly renovated Bethesda Blues and Jazz Supper Club. This small theatre has recently gone through an extensive renovation that has left the theatre similar to the way it was when it was build in 1938. The art-deco decoration and sleek décor are sure to remind you of the elegant times that were spent back in those days. This National Historic Registry
Property is by far the best supper club in the region. But beauty is not the only attraction to be had here. The club has been showcasing talented artist like The Great Eddie Palmieri who played 2 sold out nights at the beginning of November and many other popular local, national and international musicians. Indulge in the variety of appetizers, salads and entrees including their mouth watering filet mignon, tasty lamb chops and scrumptious pork
medallions as well as their seafood entrees like their very popular Salmon dish and Sautéed Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes. Order the vegetable pasta accompanied by one of their wonderful salads if you prefer not to eat meat. Finish it all off with one of their tasty desserts and sit back and enjoy the music. This is what the Bethesda Blues and Jazz Cub is all about. Stop by and be pampered….you will not be disappointed.
