�� American circus company billed as The Greatest Show on Earth. The company was started in 1919 when the circus created by James Anthony Bailey �� the Barnum & Bailey Circus in 1907, but ran the �� the circus from using their own portable tents to using venues, such as sports stadiums that had the seating already in place. In 1967 Irvin Feld bought the circus, but in 1971 he sold it toMattel. He bought it back in 1982. The Barnum & Bailey Circus (The Greatest Show on Earth). In 1875, Dan Castello and William Cameron Coup persuaded Bar�� to the circus they had already created in Delavan, Wisconsin. It was called “P.T. Barnum’s Great Traveling Museum, Menagerie, Caravan, and Hippodrome”. The moniker “Greatest Show on Earth” was added later. Independently of Castello and Coup, James Anthony Bailey had teamed up with James E. Cooper to create the Cooper and Bailey Circus in the 1860s. The Cooper and Bailey Circus was soon Barnum’s chief competitor, exhib�� elephant ever born in the United States.

She was born in March 1880 in Philadelphia, to “Babe” and “Mandarin”, and later euthanized in November 1907 for aggressiveness.[citation needed] Barnum attempted to buy the elephant. They eventually agreed to combine their shows in 1881.[1] In 1882, the combined “Barnum & Bailey Circus” was successful with acts such as Jumbo, advertised as the world’s largest elephant. Barnum died in 1891 and Bailey then purchased the circus from his widow. Bailey continued touring the eastern United States until he took his circus to Europe. That tour started on December 27, 1897 and lasted until 1902. In �� a small circus about the same time that Barnum & Bailey were at the peak of their popularity. Similar to dozens of small circuses that toured the Midwest and the Northeast �� to town in small animal-drawn caravans. Their circus rapidly grew and they were soon able to move their circus by train, which allowed them to have the largest traveling amusement enterprise of that time. Bailey’s ��tunity to move their show from the Midwest to the eastern seaboard. Faced with the new competition, Bailey �� time in 1905. He died the next year and the circus was ��

On Saturday, May 3rd and Sunday, 4th, EBLO (or Education Based Latino Outreach), will be holding its 10th annual Cinco de Mayo celebration on Broadway Street between Fleet St and Eastern Ave. Admission to the celebration is free of charge.

Nearly 3,000 people attended past celebrations. And I expect this year to top previous years. The Cinco de Mayo Festival is a family-oriented weekend of Hispanic arts and culture featuring live music, dancers in authentic costumes, native handcraft vendors, Hispanic cuisine and much more. The tradition of Cinco de Mayo dates back to May 5, 1862 when the Mexican army led by General Ignacio Zaragosa led his smaller troop of soldiers in Puebla against the invading forces from France. This battle was part of a campaign by the French to install a European monarch led by Maximilian the archduke of Austria as emperor of Mexico. On May 5th, after an intense two hour battle the Mexican forces held their ground and the French army retreated.

The Battle of Puebla proved to be a signiďż˝icant victory to the Mexicans who fought in the battle. The valor of those who fought the battle demonstrates the commitment, devotion, and pride of all countrymen who had to live under French rule until 1867. 16 - www.fiestadcmagazine.com / March 2014

El festival es gratis para el público y tendrá lugar en Broadway entre la calle Fleet y la avenida Eastern. De 10 am a 9 pm el sábado 3º de mayo y de 10 am a 8 pm el domingo 4º de mayo, el festival ofrece grupos musicales, bailes, folclor, comida y artesanía- todo con llamarada latina. La tradición de Cinco de Mayo se remonta al 5 de mayo 1862, cuando el ejército mexicano dirigido por el general Ignacio Zaragoza, el cual dirigió a su pequeña tropa de militares en Puebla contra las fuerzas invasoras de Francia. Esta batalla fue parte de una campaña por los franceses para instalar un monarca europeo liderado por el archiduque Maximiliano de Austria como emperador de México. El 5 de mayo, después de una intensa batalla de dos horas las fuerzas mexicanas se mantuvieron firmes y el ejército francés se retiró. La Batalla de Puebla demostró ser una victoria significativa para los mexicanos que lucharon en la batalla. La valentía de los que lucharon en la batalla demuestra el compromiso, la dedicación y el orgullo de todos los mexicanos que tuvieron que vivir bajo el dominio francés hasta 1867. �� Big News from California. Whole Foods stores in the Los Angeles area will soon carry La Diablada! We’re pleased �� selling our premium brand. Whole Foods is the world’s leader in natural and organic foods, with more than 360 stores in North America and the United Kingdom. Look for La Diablada soon in Whole Foods stores that carry spirits.

�� Something big is coming to Las Vegas. It’s The Linq, a complex of 30 casinos, restaurants and shops. Located between The Flamingo and The Quad on the Las Vegas Strip, the complex is anchored by The High Roller, an “observation wheel”, taking the Ferris Wheel to “new heights”. One of those nightspots is The BLVD Cocktail Co., a sophisticated piano bar. They’ll be featuring specialty cocktails made with La Diablada. We couldn’t be more excited about joining this new venture. In other Vegas news, the next Independent Spirit Expo takes place in Las Vegas on Thursday, April 10th from 5:00 to 8:30 PM at Caesar’s Palace. They’re holding the event in conjunction with the 71st annual Wine and Spirit Wholesalers Convention. Macchu Pisco will be there, as we are at many of these trade events around the country.
