Local Festival

On Saturday, May 3rd and Sunday, 4th, EBLO (or Education Based Latino Outreach), will be holding its 10th annual Cinco de Mayo celebration on Broadway Street between Fleet St and Eastern Ave. Admission to the celebration is free of charge.

Nearly 3,000 people attended past celebrations. And I expect this year to top previous years. The Cinco de Mayo Festival is a family-oriented weekend of Hispanic arts and culture featuring live music, dancers in authentic costumes, native handcraft vendors, Hispanic cuisine and much more. The tradition of Cinco de Mayo dates back to May 5, 1862 when the Mexican army led by General Ignacio Zaragosa led his smaller troop of soldiers in Puebla against the invading forces from France. This battle was part of a campaign by the French to install a European monarch led by Maximilian the archduke of Austria as emperor of Mexico. On May 5th, after an intense two hour battle the Mexican forces held their ground and the French army retreated.

The Battle of Puebla proved to be a signiicant victory to the Mexicans who fought in the battle. The valor of those who fought the battle demonstrates the commitment, devotion, and pride of all countrymen who had to live under French rule until 1867. 16 - www.fiestadcmagazine.com / March 2014

The benefits of massage, massage modalities and where to go Massage is probably the first form of selfmedication. When someone hurts themselves what’s the first thing they usually do? Rub that area to try and make the pain go away. Through the years massage has developed into many different modalities and techniques specifically designed to relieve different ailments within the human body. Here I list the most basic and what they do. Swedish massage: Swedish massage consists of long gliding strokes in the direction of the blood flow. It relaxes muscles and helps diminish aches and pains. It Improves circulation, reduces stress, improves mood, may help you sleep better, increases energy and moves body fluids (such as blood) to nourish cells and lymph to help remove waste products. Deep tissue: Deep tissue is designed to relieve severe tension in the muscles and connective tissue. This type of massage focuses on the

The benefits of massage, Massage definitions and where to find places. muscles located below the surface of the top muscles. Deep tissue massage is often recommended for individuals who experience consistent pain, are involved in heavy physical activity (such as athletes), and patients who have sustained physical injury. Trigger point: A trigger point is a tight area in the muscle that causes pain in other parts of the body.

and shorten the time needed to recover from an event. Sports Massage uses a variety of techniques such as Swedish, trigger point, hydrotherapy (hot/cold), and deep tissue. Prior to an athletic event, Sports Massage can be used with stretching in order to help athletes loosen, warm and prepare their muscles so that their performance and endurance might be enhanced. Following an athletic event,

The pain may be sharp or a dull ache. For example, a trigger point near your shoulder blade can give you migraines. Therapists locate and deactivate them using finger pressure.

Sports Massage is used to relieve pain, prevent stiffness, and return the muscles back to their normal state. Sports Massage is also used for injury rehabilitation.

Hot stone: Hot stone is a massage done with warm…not hot, stones. It relaxes the muscles faster when the warmth hits the body. It’s great when incorporated with deep tissue and trigger point as well.

Reflexology: Reflexology is something that more people are trying lately. It is the application of pressure to the feet, hands, or ears with specific thumb, finger, and hand techniques with the idea that such work effects a physical change to the body.

Sports Massage: Sports massage focuses on muscles related to the event. (Soccer = legs, boxing= upper body…) For athletes who train continuously, the goal is to enhance endurance, lessen the chance of injury

24 - www.fiestadcmagazine.com / April 2014

All massages should be performed to your comfort level. It should not be excessively painful. A good rule of thumb -- on a scale of 1 to 10 where one is no pain and 10 is

extremely painful, the pressure should always be less than 7. Your therapist should ask you throughout the massage how the pressure feels. If they do ask not, do not hesitate to speak up. Communication is key for a good massage. Also know that it may take a few visits to get the most stubborn knots out. Where to go: Did you know that not only spas have good massage therapists? You can also find them in private practices, Chiropractic and Physical therapy offices. If you need to save a little money, you can get one at most massage schools. The students need the practice and the schools use the donations towards higher learning. Many times you will find some real diamonds in the rough just eager to help you. https://www.amtamassage.org/ findamassage/index.html http://www.ncbtmb.org/tools/find-a-certifiedmassage-therapist

While Americans are focusing on Valentine’s Day, Peruvians are celebrating something a bit to a local bar where they carry Macchu Pisco or La Diablada and Here’s the recipe: 2 parts Macchu Pisco 3/4 parts simple syrup

For Macchu Pisco, this is an important time of year: Har oversee the harvest. We’ll be hand selecting the best Quebranta grapes ing and distilling process begins. All of this is done to bring you the best Pisco to be found in this hemisphere.

Carnival is special for us, since La Diablada Pisco refers to the Danza de los Diablos, or Dance of the Devils. It’s a carnival dance from Puno between angels and demons to achieve perfect harmony. April 2014 / www.fiestadcmagazine.com - 35
