Lucky girl...

DOUBLE DIPPING

“One time I accidently had two kisses. New Year’s is my birthday and every year I have a big party. Well, I invited two people over who thought they were my date and at midnight they both wanted a kiss. So, I delivered.” - Terry

Awkward...

SHUTDOWN SUSIE

“My friend hooked me up with a girl for New Year’s. She was really cute but kind of preppy for my taste. Everything was going good and I was actually looking forward to kissing her. I went to kiss her at midnight but right at the last second she turned so that my lips landed on her cheek. Talk about being shutdown.” - Terrance

A kiss is the touch or pressing of one’s lips against another person or an object. Cultural connotations of kissing vary widely. Depending on the culture and context, a kiss can express sentiments of love, passion, romance, sexual attraction, sexual activity, sexual arousal, affection, respect, greeting, friendship, peace and good luck, among many others. In some situations a kiss is a ritual, formal or symbolic gesture indicating devotion, respect, or sacrament. The word came from Old English cyssan (“to kiss”), in turn from coss (“a kiss”).

Soo did not work...

WEIRD TONGUE ACTION

“I’d been dating this chick for like a month. I took her out and we met up with a bunch of my friends. We were having a good time, drinking... midnight rolled around and I went to kiss her. I wanted some tongue action but she wanted a peck. It wound up being pretty awkward and we never went out again.” - Jason

Awwee, the perfect

A PERFECT KISS

“My most memorable New Year’s kiss was with my current boyfriend. Our relationship was pretty new and we we’re partying with a bunch of his friends at a bar. I really really liked him and when midnight rang, we kissed and it was kind of like what you see in the movies - perfect. We’re still together today.” - A.M.

Where to Go in the Winter There are two types of winter travelers. On the one hand, there are those that welcome cold, snowy days. On the other hand are “snowbirds,” or travelers who seek out warmer climes when winter comes. * December Weather *January Weather *February Weather Two factors make winter travel in the U.S. ideal. First, rates for flights and hotel rooms are typically lower, save for a few exceptions, such as travel to some destinations at Christmas, New Year’s Eve in New York City, and Mardi Gras in New Orleans.

22

travel

A second reason to travel in winter is because there are a number of holidays and long weekends during the months of December, January, and February. In addition to Christmas and New Year’s, there are two long travel weekends during the winter. The holiday to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., takes place on the third Monday of each January. The third Monday of February is Presidents Day.

....another unforgettable Brazilian cultural experience

BRAZIL CARNIVAL: Brazil is the largest Latin country in the Americas and the seventh biggest economy in the world. It is home to many rare natural gemstones, large oil and natural gas reserves, the mighty amazon and dozens of still isolated indigenous Indian tribes. The nation produces top world class athletes and championship teams in every major sport, annually. In June 2014, Brazil will play host to the FIFA World Cup and then the next Summer Olympic Games in 2016. The cultural influences of this country are a blend of Native American, African, European and Portuguese customs. Brazil still maintains the distinction of having the largest populous of African descendents outside the continent of Africa; the US has the second largest. As an added fact, it claims the most recognized, spectacled, and uninhibited of all Carnival celebrations on the globe. The two most popular Carnivals in Brazil take place in Salvador and Rio. For both cities it is an enormous festival of pride, culture and party energy before Lent each year. The final days leading up to Ash Wednesday are the most intense, but that is where the similarities end. The Guinness Book of World Records considers Carnival in Salvador to be the biggest street party in the world, but Carnival in Rio de Janiero is the most revered and famous without question. The lavish Masquerade Balls, massive Street Parties and prestigious Samba school competition make it an epic televised event around the world! Showcased are large, hand-crafted, visually impressive parade floats from each Samba school, led by a beautiful “Samba Queen”. The Samba Queen is accompanied by thousands (yes, thousands) of male & female singers, drummers and dancers in dazzling costumes performing choreographed rountines to the Samba beat. It is such an overwhelming, exuberant display of artistry & showmanship - that if you look closely, you’ll even spot several Samba dancers with absolutely no costume at all! (WHOA) The parades in Rio’s Sambadrome Stadium go late into the night where the top 14 samba troops contend fiercely for the annual championship crown. Your cultural, historical and social perspective will NEVER be the same after this experience. We can tell you that 2014 did not dissapoint! It’s time to check that bucket list - join us for Carnavale 2015! (watch this | 2013-14 photos) CITY PROFILE: Rio de Janeiro is located on the southeastern coast of Brazil. Once the capitol until 1960, Brazil’s second largest city has still retained its’ major cultural significance for tourism, trend-setting fashion, jazz, samba, entertainment and art. With over 6 million inhabitants, Rio is one of the most densely populated in the world. It boasts a distinct topography that includes mountains, a lagoon, an urban rainforest and golden sand beaches. Rio’s residents or “Cariocas” define much of what the city is known for - warm hospitality, a passion for life and free-spirited social energy. Upon arriving in Rio de Janiero, you’ll want to take in its’ natural settings. Get outdoors - stroll about the diverse neighborhoods and romantic lush green parks. Find the stunning panoramic views that exist throughout the city limits or tan like the natives on one of the 15 popular beaches. The legendary Copacabana beach is always lively, with people sunbathing, surfing, picnicing, playing beach volleyball, soccer & baile funk or bossa nova music blaring in the background. The beach sidewalks are filled with joggers, cyclists, pedestrians, drink stands and peddlers hawking everything imaginable you might need. Ipanema beach, however, is widely known for its exclusive shops, cafes and attraction to the young, fashionable and wealthy. Legend has it that a famous model inspired the popular “Brazilian tanga” (or tiny thong bikini) at this very same beach location. See for yourself! After visiting a beach in Rio, you’ll understand why the endless sunshine and tropical temperatures help sustain the furious beach culture and sizzling nightlife all year-round. Besides the allure & excitment of Carnival, there’s plenty more to see & do while visiting the city. The list includes the Botanical Gardens, several art displays, cultural museums and landmarks of Brazilian history, shopping for exclusive finds at the Hippie Fair or at boutique and designer shops, Brazilian style pampering at a day spa, wining & dining with the locals, and seeing a live entertainment show. Or make some time for golfing, fishing, hiking, biking, surfing, sailing and even hang gliding! (how cool was this?) Yes, you can do it all - see why couples, singles and travel enthusiasts alike fall in love with Rio de Janiero!

Welcome to the Dakar Rally, January 2015 42

T

he 2015 Dakar Rally will be the 35th running of the event and the seventh successive year that the event is held in South America.

Although te exact itineraryand dates are to be confirmed, this year the Dakar Rally is continuing its exploration of the Andes regions by organising another visit to Bolivia. No doubt that this challenging stage will test the off-road endurance qualities of the drivers and teams. Some 450 vehicles in four classes of competition are expected to start the event. How many of them will finish? The route, which will pass through North West Argentina’s canyons and sandy valleys, Salar de Uyuni, or the dunes of the Atacama Desert will require skilful driving as well the careful management of mechanical aspects. With longer special stages and several marathon stages, the 2015 Dakar’s competitors will constantly be required to tackle extreme endurance conditions.

Dakar Rally

2015 Dakar Rally Route replaces Peru with Bolivia. The event will start on January 5 and finish on January 20 (to be confirmed) after fifteen stages of competition, which will comprise a total distance of over 8,500 kilometres.

44

F

or the second time in the history of the Dakar rally, Bolivia will set the scene for a marathon stage with the motorcycle riders’ bivouac on the Salar de Uyuni salt flats. The competitors are looking forward to the challenge facing the motorcycle riders in the seventh stage of the rally, right in the heart of the world’s largest salt flat. As pointed out by Etienne Lavigne, director of the Dakar: “The competitors will come up against a stage that stands out both for its beauty and for its toughness. Even at the end of the day they will be left to their own resources, since it will be a marathon stage where they’ll only be allowed to get assistance from other riders. This is the sort of ultimate challenge we like to see in rally raids...” Our Dakar 2015 travel package will captivate adventure travelers, taking in one highlight after another. Unquestionably, one of them will be exploring Bolivia and the southern Altiplano region at Salar de Uyuni salt flats.

Miniature collections

Collection Courtesy of Elva Medina

Miniature collections begin when you realize you spend time looking for particular objects. You may want to find another tiny zebra, a match for a Christmas village house, a wargaming piece which has just come out, scenery to finally start putting that model railway together. The chance remark I like pigs can lead to others creating a collection for you. Analyzing what you have starts you seeing yourself as a collector, so now that you’re looking for something, how does it become a collection?

How to Choose What Miniatures to Collect

50

With miniatures as with every other collectible, you should only collect what you love. Your interest makes your collection unique and it will bring you pleasure when you care for it. Try to plan your collections, not just store interesting items in shoe boxes. That could be considered hoarding, not collecting. Actively making decisions about what specific items you intend to collect, what story you want your collection to tell, what you can afford, how you will improve and how you will use your collection, will add to your knowledge and interest as well as creating a better collection in the long run.

Collections Should be Personal Choose miniatures that match your interests, they will give the collection more meaning to you and relate to the broad circle of your friends and family. Analyze the space you have to store or showcase your chosen objects and make sure what you choose will complement other parts of your life. Collectible items are not a replacement for an investment portfolio. While many news articles focus on valuable discoveries, the majority of collectors gather things because they love them.
