To me photography is being able to partner the right place or moment while coaxing a subject into the right position to get the ideal shot. I get the biggest thrill out of seeing happy clients looking at work that we created together. Whether it is a picture of their child, capturing a split second in time at a sporting event, the interaction of couples, aspiring models looking to expand their portfolios, or pictures of people’s four-legged family members....it is all about capturing the moment and preserving it for them.... forever. I have come to realize that beautiful images have profound effects on people. www.bdhphotos.com

Spring is coming :) You know, when it comes to finding out what’s happening around town, there’s nothing quite like leaning one elbow on the fence and shooting the breeze with your next-door neighbor. It’s just hard to beat getting the latest news from a trusted friend. Many of us have grown up during a time when news was more of a monologue. Now, thanks to the interactive communication made available by advancing technology, there’s been a real shift toward dialogue. This new, online version of our magazine is a good example of that. The past few years, we’ve sent out Fiesta Magazine in an attractive, printed style with the purpose of showcasing the excellence of the printed arts. Magazines are stylish, luxuriant, and rich with color and texture. They’re designed not only to be read, but also to be absorbed. They’re perfect when you’re ready to relax, kick off your shoes and curl up on the sofa or lounge by the pool. But what an online magazine gives up in style points, it more than makes up for with other goodies. Timeliness. Dynamism. Interactivity. Fiesta Magazine online and printed can and will be updated constantly with current information about people and events that you as a friend will find of interest. Then it’s your turn to participate. Dress in green for Saint Patrick’s Festivities and welcome the Spring with our Argentinian friends at the Salsa congress! (important events to cover). Send us your photos. Send us video files. We love to hear from all our friends, and this is a great way to create a dialogue, neighbor to neighbor, kind of like Facebook and some other forms of social media that are popping up. So, look around, enjoy reading about what’s happening today at Fiesta Magazine, join us to welcome our new members, send us your thoughts and ideas, and then keep checking back with us, also having HAPPY SAINT PATRICK’S DAY! Dear readers see you soon!. 8 - www.fiestadcmagazine.com / March 2014

Baltimore, MD - February 13, 2014 - The Maryland Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (MDHCC), the leading chamber of commerce representing and connecting over 40,000 Hispanic owned businesses in the region, held its 2014 Legislative Reception last Thursday, February 6, 2014 at the Maryland House of Delegates in An12 - www.fiestadcmagazine.com / March 2014 12 - www.fiestadcmagazine.com / March 2014
napolis, MD from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Energized by a newly elected Board of Directors, the 30-year old Chamber kicked off its 2014 event calendar with a bang. Over 100 guests attended the reception, including several State delegates and Senators. “I have been part of this organization for years and this is by far the best attendance by our state
representatives I have seen,” commented Veronica Cool, the Chamber’s member. During the reception, guests had an opportunity to network with fellow Chamber members and their elec-ted bers’ favorite events of the year”,
mentioned Enrique Melendez, who is the Chamber’s newly elected chairman. “The fact that we are in Annapolis, right in the Maryland House of Delegates where so many important bills are formulated, debated, and passed; and the fact that our members have an opportunity to have their voices heard directly by their representatives, makes this an important event for our members and the businesses that are part of this great Chamber of Commerce”, he added. During the 90-day 2014 Maryland Legislative Session, the Chamber expects more than 2,500 bills to be introduced by the Senate and House. “Since during a typical year we only see about one-third of those bills pass both chambers and then make it to the Governor’s desk, we want to make sure that our representatives know where we and our members stand on bills affecting the business climate in Maryland, but also, how certain bills can help or hinder the growth of Hispanic-owned enterprises,” explained Jeanette Ortiz, the Chamber’s Legislative Committee Chair. Key issues this session include corporate income tax reduction, the minimum wage increase, transportation, storm water management
fees, gaming, Maryland health insurance exchange, energy and balancing the budget. The Maryland Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s legislative priorities include: - Supporting a competitive business climate in Maryland. - Encouraging job growth and workforce development in Maryland. - Small Business Support. February 2014 / www.fiestadcmagazine.com - 21 March 2014 / www.fiestadcmagazine.com - 21
Who is Donna McGinn? I am a 50 year old, mother of 3 teenage children. National level Women’s Physique competitor, licensed massage therapist. Aspiring Magazine and designer of upcycled couture clothing. Why have you chosen to practice this very complicated discipline? I was already determined to change my body to be the best it could be, when I saw a friend compete at a body building show thought…maybe I could do that too. I was about the same age and already had some muscle from lifting on my own and from when I used to teach women’s pole dance working out, to the weekly diet plans. Even the cardio is not so bad. I love seeing my body change. When I start getting close to physique really starts showing off all the hard work I put into it, to the point where stran-
22 -22 www.fiestadcmagazine.com / February 2014 - www.fiestadcmagazine.com / March 2014
gers will actually stop me and comment questions like, “How do I get rid of this bulge here in my middle?” That’s mainly diet, btw. “What is your diet like?” All the guys want to know… “How much do you bench?” Girls never ask that question. Lol! I’ve had some really funny reactions from people when they see me. It’s surreal and entertaining at the same time. Have you ever wanted to be famous and live off of Body Building or has this just been a hobby for you? It all started just to see if I could possibly do this. Then it became…let’s sive hobby, so I look for ways to bring in more money so I can continue my quest for the elusive Pro card. Something I’ve come very close to twice in
Would you like to be in TV commercials, magazines, or the movies? Sure, why not. I gotta pay the bills and it’s a lot of fun. I love trying new things and I seem to attract attention where ever I go. I have a few acquaintances that are actors and actresses tell me I should try it. I have something unique about me and that’s what they look for. What advice do you give to people who don’t follow a healthy and active lifestyle and don’t eat healthy? Well, if they are asking….I would tell they try to start on full speed with a total change of what they are used to, it won’t last long. I look at their diet and we try to cut out the worst foods and I tell them different ways to prepare the healthier foods that they consume. Like, cooking leaner cuts of meat. Using pan spray rather than vegetable oil. Then I suggest that they do a little cardio a couple of days a week. Not running. Just walking for maybe 30 min at a steady pace. It’s a good start.
What are your future projects as trainer, massage therapist, or Body Builder? As a body builder….get my Pro card. See how far I can go in this sport. The Olympia year they had Women’s Physique at the Olympia. Something to look forward too. When I started as an LMT I wanted to work with body builders and I have already been doing that. My goal is to get better at it. I’m not a trainer yet. I need to make time to and I have time, I will work out with them. Tell them the ins and outs of competitive far and try to help them clean up their diet. I’ve always wanted to help out my trainer, David Johnston. He is a busy man. So when he does give me the opportunity to learn and help, I’m there.

The simplicity of nutrition vs. fad diets We all know fad diets don’t work, or work temporarily, so why do so many still look for new ones to try? I guess we all want a miracle to happen were we don’t really have to try hard to get what we want. Hey, I’ve been guilty of that too. But the best I’ve ever looked and felt is when I put a lot of effort and thought into it. The basics. We all know what they are. We all know what kinds of food is good for our bodies, and we all know that moving and exercise is the best way to burn calories. There’s really no way around it. Do we really need tons of studies showing us that eating mostly fried foods is bad for us? No. We already know this
24 - www.fiestadcmagazine.com / March 2014
instinctively. We just tend to get lazy about what we put in our mouths. Lately I’ve been seeing this saying pop up on Facebook.” if you want to know what foods are best for your body, then buy the ones you wouldn’t normally see in an ad.” When was the last time you saw a commercial for spinach, broccoli or asparagus? How about plain chicken breast or lounder? Even some carbs and fats are good for you. But in moderation. As a body builder I eat carbs several times a day to keep my blood sugar level even. But only in small amounts and not junk food. For me I eat about 4oz or 1⁄2 cup of rice, potatoes or
oats with almost every meal. With fats it’s even less. Maybe an oz. or 2 of fat, usually from nuts or other naturally fatty foods such as avocados, coconuts, beef... Still hungry? Add more green veggies to your plate. I use them as iller when I don’t feel as full. I know it’s hard to stay away from the yummy caloric foods that do nothing for your health but taste oh so good. It’s ok to splurge once in a while. Maybe once a week. You can have that dinner date with a friend and enjoy it. This way it won’t affect your health and weight much at all, and it makes having your treats even more enjoyable.

Fui criado aquí in VA.

FASHION Crystal Couture Show and Sale is a retail pop-up fashion and runway experience presented in Crystal City from February 4-8, 2014. Crystal Couture Show & Sale brought about 60 of the metropolitan area’s stylish boutiques and designers under one roof. This one-stop shopping experience allowed hundreds of guests to browse discounted offerings on the rack and on the runway as models showcased offerings. The event also featured sips at the bar, free make-up and hair makeovers, chats with fashion consultants, and music from renowned DJ Neekola. Crystal Couture Show and Sale has been an annual event since 2008 and has put Crystal City on the fashion map in the Maryland, Virginia and DC metro area.
