Tango Fire

The Tango Fire Company of Buenos Aires was formed in 2005 with it’s premier in Singapore in April of that year. In August 2005 the show was presented at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival where it was highly successful, resulting in engagements in the most prestigious venues around the world. This led to the company touring extensively over the last 8 years. Tango Fire is choreographed by critically acclaimed Argentine choreographer & dancer German Cornejo. The individual couples choreograph their own solos with German Cornejo refining the steps as is traditional in the world of Argentine Tango. Allowing the couples creative freedom creates a showcase of the 5 couples individual styles, making Tango Fire Company of Buenos Aires unique in the world of Tango.

EDUCATE-EMPOWER-CONNECT The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute’s (CHCI) annual celebration during Hispanic Heritage month is by far the most sought after event of its kind in Washington DC. By: Claudia Ordóñez his is mostly due to the fact that President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama have addressed the CHCI Gala in the past 4 years and were scheduled to address The 36th Annual Awards Gala again this year. The Gala is also attended by some members of Congress as well as award winning celebrities. The CHCI seeks to educate, empower and connect Latino youth to US leadership. This year the celebration was scheduled on Octo-

ber 2, one day after the government shut down which unfortunately left The President no other choice but to cancel the event. Although disappointing, the CHCI still counted on a variety of Honorees including the Mexican actress, Director, Producer and activist Salma Hayek and with the famous Puerto Rican singer Olga Tañon. Salma was awarded with the 2013 Medallion of Excellence in the Arts, entertainment, Music or Sports for her courageous and inspiring journey as an American, and her success as actor, producer, director and

10 < FIESTA DC MAGAZINE•NOVEMBER

philanthropist. Salma gave a very powerful and passionate speech centered on Immigration reform and the plight of “The Dreamers”. It was truly an emotional speech that quieted the audience who had been fidgety during the previous congressional speeches and awards. The celebration finally began when Olga Tañon took the stage and changed the mood in the hall by getting everyone to their feet for some very much needed Latin moves… For more information on CHCI please visit www.chci.org < WWW.fiestaDCmagazine.com

FERNANDA FERREL SABALA

Hispanic Astronomer by Frank Mareno

We had the pleasure of meeting with and interviewing Fernanda Ferrel Sabala in our office. It was great to hear Fernanda’s grand spacial adventure! She is a brilliant and intelligent Hispanic woman who studied astronomy and reached her chidhood dream. Her story unfolds here in this interview with the brilliant Astronomer.

Interview |People 16 16 <<www.fiestadcmagazine.com FIESTA DC MAGAZINE•NOVEMBER

FIESTA- Who is Fernanda and where are you from? FERNANDA- I was born in Quito, Ecuador. I hold that place close to my heart I love my country, the people. FIESTA- How did you get to the USA? FERNANDA- My father attended a high school in Pennsylvania. He loved the USA and saw a lot of opportunity here. He saw that everyone had opportunity regardless of caste, income or gender and that was what he wanted to give his children. My dad was an entrepreneur. He decided that in order for us to succeed we needed to move to the USA. We moved to the USA in 1992 after his many failed attempts with inventions and business. FIESTA- Where did you first arrive in the USA? FERNANDA- We arrived in Miami International airport in 1992 then got in a car and drove to Maples, Florida directly across from Miami. That is where we made our home. We lived with friends until my dad found a job and an apartment. And that’s where my family has lived ever since. They still live in the same place. FIESTA- What’s your current profession? FERNANDA- Technically, I am the systems engineer for the Osiris-Rex project at NASA. That is not the degree that I graduated with. I graduated with an Aerospace Engineer degree and also have a dual major in Engineering and Physics and a minor in Mathematics. I haven’t done a lot of aerospace engineering work since I started working in NASA in 2005. I learned from my

father to never say no to opportunities, so I took everything that was offered where I’d be working with astronauts, the shuttle program, The Hubble Space Telescope. I took those responsibilities without any hesitation. I worked in everything and anything regarding space.

I have two twelve year old twins.. .they are not interested in science however. They did help me start a science club at their school for kids who have not had any involvement with Dry ice, or liquid nitrogen. We do fun experiments with them.

FIESTA- When and how did your dream begin? FERNANDA- I was 5 years old when my dad brought home a toy shuttle. It was my favorite toy. Since then, I always knew that I wanted to go to the moon and other planets. When I was in High School researching careers I always looked for anything that led me to schools that graduated astronauts.

FIESTA- What do you see in your future, your next project? FERNANDA- Just so that I’m clear,. Cause there’s always a lot of misunderstanding… NASA Goddard where I work is responsible for most of the planning for all of the missions. There are a lot of scientists here. We design and build satellites and lots of instruments that go to space. NASA in Johnson , Houston do most of the missions. Most of the work they do has to do with the space station. They work a lot for the astronauts. I’ve had the pleasure to work with some of the astronauts. Kennedy is responsible for launching everything up. I’ve been very happy at NASA Goddard because that’s where all of the fun stuff happens and I’ve travelled to the different areas if I need to. I would like to stay at NASA Goddard if at all possible with my project Osiris- Rex.

FIESTA- What are your current activities at your job? FERNANDA- The work that I’m currently doing is considered the most boring part of any project. Projects have many phases in order to get launched. The first three phases involves planning. Currently we’re on phase 3 of planningThe finding requirements. Making sure that the rules that we set out for this spacecraft will be followed. We work with lots of groups like the University of Arizona, Arizona State University and with Canada. FIESTA- Where do you work? Do you move around? FERNANDA- I work out of Maryland but sometimes we travel to different locations. FIESTA- What about your personal life, Do you have a family? FERNANDA- I have a wonderful family.

FIESTA- Tell us more about the Osiris-Rex project FERNANDA- The Osiris- Rex project is a mission that will around until 2023. It will launch in 2016 if everything goes as scheduled. It takes time to approach the asteroid, collect samples and come back to land so we expect it back to earth by 2023. With any luck I’ll be working on this project for some time and will have job security.

FIESTA- Do you have any advice for our readers? FERNANDA- My biggest advice is to not give up! I’m going to tell you a story it’s the best way for me to explain …When I was attending college, you know life gets hectic…something always happens. You may not get straight A’s! That happened to me. One day I went t on an interview with Boeing. The gentleman that was interviewing me took my resume and took a red pen and crossed out some things to correct it and told me that I would never work at Boeing. I was very distraught and went to ask advice and comfort from my family. My dad told me not to give up! Who is he anyway? I took his advice and continued to work hard, network, meet people and attend NASA competitions where I ended up meeting the Vice President of the company that hired me. He didn’t even look at my resume. He hired me because he saw the work that I was doing and the kind of person I was. There was a little boy who approached me at The Hispanic heritage event the other day and said that he wanted to work with NASA but that it probably wasn’t a good idea because everyone told him that he wouldn’t be able to because he has he had ADHD. “I don’t have good attention skills” he said. It made me really sad to hear that… I left him with some stickers and patches from my mission and I encouraged him to look into other jobs within NASA. There is a place for everyone at NASA. You can do anything from Human resources, to engineering, biology and psychiatry so I encouraged him to not give up his dream.

Cuban music By: Claudia Ordóñez It felt almost like being back in Old Havana, Cuba on October 8 as the Legendary Buena Vista Social Club played their Cuban music and Latin Rhythms at Thew Listener auditorium at Washington University in D.C. It was truly magical to see this 15 piece orchestra with a mixture of old and new members perform as well as they did when they first took to the International stage more than a decade ago. Eliades Ochao led the band with his vocals as he and the band played “El Carretero”, “De Camino al la Vereda”, “Estoy Como Nunca” y “El Cabonero” The crowd was fast on their feet when Omara Portuondo stepped on stage 20 < www.fiestadcmagazine.com

minutes into the concert. At 82 years old, Omara still dazzles the audience with her vocals and Latin dance moves. She sang some of the favorites and more popular songs, “Chan Chan”, “El Cuarto de Tula”, “Dos Gardenias” and “Candela”, “No Me LLores Mas”, “Veinte Años”, and invited the audience to accompany her in “Quizas Quizas, Quizas”. The concert ended with Eliades Ochoa and the audience singing one of Cuba’s most patriotic songs “Guantanamera” as the orchestra exited the stage. The 2013 GoCouture! Fashion Show is the company’s first annual event that focuses on encouraging the fashionistas of the DMV to “take a break” from traditional retail shopping and to shop the designers and boutiques (i.e. “go couture”) to support the local designers and boutiques of the DMV. The show was more than a show—it was a fashion experience as the event goers not only witnessed a fabulous fashion show and be entertained by some of the area’s hottest talents, they were also able to do what most fashionistas love to do—SHOP! The mini-boutiques set up for the event goers to shop included M.A.N., B. Fly Apparel, Jewelry by Alia Manshio, Star Design Studio, H. Darling Apparel, Perfectly Posh, and Key2Impressions. The gorgeous models featured in the show, modeled the exquisite designs from some of the area’s most seasoned and the emerging designers to include: Kim Elleen of Kim Elleen Designs; Florence Mwela Kinne of ENESS; Marisa Nicole of B. Fly Apparel; Victor Colvin of Victor Hou Designs, Starbrille Cook of Star Design Studio, and Chickie Brown of Monarchs and Nomads (M.A.N.). The entertainment at the show was just as impeccable as the fashion designs! Rising stars within the music industry, Amber J, Chris “GQ” Perry, and Danielle Lyndsay took to the stage and captivated the audience with their performances. If you think the 2013 GoCouture! Fashion Show was remarkable…you don’t want to miss the 2014 GoCouture! Fashion Show as the owners of EC will top themselves next year! Restaurants Reviews‎

We are impressed with a decoration of the restaurant, the variety of the course menu with specialty dishes and wine, and the greeted with warm welcome of the general manager. This is how we begin with “Cuba Libre Restaurant.” Cuba Libre Restaurant & Rum Bar is located at the corner of H and 9th street in Washington DC, a few blocks from Chinatown. The restaurant opened in Philadelphia 2000, Atlantic City in 2004 and Orlando in 2009. The Washington DC restaurant opened three years ago. With a pleasant smile, the manager briefly explained about the name “Cuba Libre” which translates to “a free Cuba” signifies a hope for the future of the treasured island nation. Since opening with a highly skilled team of chefs, beverage experts and event professionals, the restaurant hosted a lot of special events such as the 2013 Hispanic Heritage Award Party. Project improvements were added in late Fall 2012 to enable the restaurant to accommodate more customers. When you step into Cuba Libre in Washington D.C., the romantic balconies and tropical plans make you feel as though about Havana. On Friday and Saturdays, beginning at 11 pm, DJs spin Salsa, Bachata and House music for customers dancing entertainment. Regularly, the restaurant has performances by

Skully HeadsEvery once in a while, I run across something that reminds me of the TV shows I watched as a kid. A reader sent us a link to a helmet that reminds me of the TV show Street Hawk, where an ex-mororcycle cop Jesse Mach (Rex Smith) rides a top secret government experimental hightech motorcycle to fight crime Hey Rex, if you are around, check out this helmet from Skully Helmets.

Technology

Similar to Google Glass, the P-1 projects a floating video that appears in the bottom-right corner of the visor opening. The helmet runs a modified Android operating system, running apps and connecting to your smartphone via Bluetooth for data connection display maps on the HUD. It can also connect to an integrated rear-view camera system to give 180 degree viewing angle in the back to give better visibility to what’s behind you. Bluetooth pairing to your phone also gives access to voice control for Skully helmets. You can control your music, send texts, make calls, and change your destination all hands-free. Never before has riding been so connected. A built-in battery drives the display and associated electronics for about nine hours. Skully plans to begin limited beta testing in the spring of 2014. Prices are not available yet, but if you want one of these under the Christmas tree in 2014, you need to be “very good” for the next year… yes, that means it’s going to cost you.

The U.S. military and the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) are looking to build an Ironman-like armored suit and terminator-like robots to assist in combat in future warfare. While the next-gen soldiers won’t be able to fire concussive Repulsor blasts from the palm of their hands any time soon, some of the technology exists today, so a functional suit for the Army might be only a decade or so away. And while we don’t have terminator-like robots roaming the streets, many of our high-tech manufacturing facilities employ robots of various types to build anything from cars to washing machines. DARPA create the Robotics Challenge (DRC) as a way to engage Academia and industry to research. DARPA’s challenge is meant to generate groundbreaking research and development in the hope that robots will one day work in tandem with people One interesting prototype is ATLAS, developed by Boston Dynamics. In the DARPA video, its binocular eyes is seen focusing on objects and surroundings, as ATLAS is seen doing jumps, navigating over holes, and being bombarded by 20 lb weights. DARPA’s webpage dedicated to ATLAS describes the current stage of the robot as a physical shell for the software brains and nerves that scientists are working on. Scientists with Boston Dynamics in Waltham, Mass., have been training ATLAS to take the DRC trials. Another interesting development comes from the U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM). USSOCOM has been asking defense contractors and researchers for ideas and prototypes to demonstrate their technologies for exoskeletons, heads-up displays, night vision, sensors and body armor that could be incorporated into such a suit. They hope to complete an early prototype next year, and a demonstration model a few years after. Some of the most innovative ideas have come from Academia. Scientists at Massachusetts Institute of Technology are designing a kind of “liquid armor.” The suit flexible and easy to wear, but stiffens the moment a hard object (like shrapnel) impacts the armor, absorbing the kinetic energy of the object and dissipating it through the suit. Another interesting suit is the “The Tactical Assault Light Operator Suit, or TALOS. It is an advanced infantry uniform that promises to provide superhuman strength with greater ballistic protection,” according to an Army statement. The suit is designed as a heavy load-bearing exoskeletons that can help soldiers run farther, and carry more gear. The suit use wide-area networking and on-board computers to give the wearer more situational 28 < FIESTA DC MAGAZINE•noveMBER

awareness of the battlefield. U.S. Special Operations Command chief Adm. William McRaven backs the project for future Spec Ops. “I’m very committed to this,” McRaven told a group of industry representatives at a TALOS presentation in July. “I’d like that last operator that we lost to be the last operator we lose in this fight or the fight of the future, and I think we can get there.” While Ironman has a small energy reactor embedded in the chest to power his suit, no such luck for the TALOS yet. Arizona State University engineering professor Braden Allenby said “It would be a difficult design to operate in the field conditions, particularly finding the right energy source.” Batteries are bulky, and the system uses a lot of energy. The challenge is to find an energy source that would power the suit for a full day. You might to run out of power and be stuck out on a mountain, desert, forest, city or any place we currently operate. Another consideration is being hacked. The computer systems in such a suit also would make it vulnerable to hackers, with cyber warriors being able to take control of the suit remotely through its networks, shutting it down or exploiting the technology to remotely operate the suit.

“ The future warfighter uniform will incorporate new helmet techno logies, sensors, communication devices, hearing protection and more.

Perhaps the suit would give soldiers enhanced situational awareness rather than the superhuman strength that an exoskeleton might provide. Situational awareness would allow better communication and coordination during battle, and has a better chance to neutralize adversaries quickly, minimizing soldiers risks and potentially saves lives. Troops in Afghanistan are also already wearing helmet sensors that record data on any blasts they are exposed to in combat. Sensors and other body-monitoring systems like heart-rate monitors and heat sensors would likely be incorporated in TALOS. With the dwindling defense budget, TALOS will not be a good investment in the near term. Drones and robots are likely more cost effective than humans in exoskeletons. TALOS might be useful for fighting the battles of the Halo video game, but it would be less effective in today’s irregular warfare. I still want one. Readers, please give us your thoughts, and submit any articles on future-tech that you would like to see. If published, we will give you a Fiesta Magazine T-shirt and unnamed goodies from our generous Sponsors. < WWW.fiestaDCmagazine.com

It has been 15 since I decided to leave my beloved Argentina to travel the world. My last TANGO performance in Córdoba Province left a fiery impression, forever burned into my memory. Memories of that soulful night returned, bringing fond memories, as I attended the TANGO FIRE “FLAMES OF DESIRE” event at Lisner Auditorium, George Washington University, Washington, D.C. TANGO FIRE was a magnificent explosion of delight and grace. The tango rhythm hypnotized the dancers as they sway and move to the velvety music, the audience enthralled through each musical interlude. The end of the night conclude with an explosion of delightful audience as they cheered to a standing ovation.

The Quartet band behind the majestic music are: Carrascal - Bandoneon Clemente, Estefania Corsini - violin, Matias Feigin - Piano, Benavidez Facundo - Contrabass.

amazes the audience. Overseas public demand for their performances are of great delight to us, as the dance performance is a cornerstone of what defines “Buenos Aires.”

The band commanded respect and authority by showing the historical piece. The violinist masterfully change her tone and melody, eliciting soft emotional tone or vibrant excitement at just the right moment. The pianist provides a steady musical tone, marking every second with personality and character, a defining an original quality that is wholly Argentine. We cannot fail to mention the sublimely slow, but charismatic bass that permeates and integrates the music into the sounds of Arrabaleros.

Jesus Hildalgo, the singer who shares his melodic voice with the audience, also shares in the joy of being Argentinian. This singer started his career at the age of 13, performing in Europe and many parts of the world. We were enraptured with his songs, telling those stories that are fully Argentina.

The elegant dancers glide to the music with grace and agility that simply

The extraordinary thing about the show was the contemporary style. It is an evolution of “contemporary tango,” you might say, complete with acrobatic movements executed in elegance and sensual touch. The five couples that dance to the music are professionals,

cultivating the tradition and culture of Buenos Aires. All of this graceful movement is directed once again by German Cornejo, a meticulous scholar and lover of classic and contemporary artistic ballet, jazz and acrobatic techniques. He has won five gold medals in world-wide Tango competition since 2005. After travelling around the world, he just came back from Japan where he was directing his projects. Hopefully, this wonderful new show will soon be absorbed into the fabric of this city’s art culture. Visitors to Washington DC can enjoy another cultural event from far-flung corners of this world. FIESTA Magazine delightfully awaits to bring our readers the best of entertainment in our next edition.

Together they give their interpretation of traditional and contemporary tangos. All virtuosos in their own right, their music enlivens and enriches the audiences experience of Tango Fire. The musicians are an emotive element in an intricate and symbiotic relationship between music, sensuality of dance and the poetry of the songs, which is Argentine Tango.

Wine Review

Spain has done an impressive job promoting and disseminating their reds wines, so good in fact that sometimes we can forget that they also produce myriad white wines that are worth our attention. From the more assertively mineral styles produced along the Atlantic coast to richly oaked examples from classic Rioja producers, to the obscure and the unusual, there are plenty of interesting whites wines coming out of Spain these days, and much like their portfolio of red wines at very attractive price points and representing such a broad range of styles that everyone should be able to fall in love with something.

While it’s not quite holiday party season yet, though the first Santa’s must be out already at some mall somewhere, it’s not too early to be making some notes about the wines you might want to share at parties this holiday season. There are many great values here in the white wines of Spain, so it’s as good a place, and time, as any to start if you haven’t! • 2011 Castro Martin Albarino Rias Baixas 12.5% $16 This has a lovely nose, all swathed in a gentle florality with soft apricot, plum, and tangerine aromas that show a little candied almond note. This is focused and fairly precise in the mouth with big acids lending a classic seashell note on the palate, and even a whisper of tannins supporting slightly herb toned green plum, lime and melon fruit. This finishes with impressive clarity and good length showing very pure lemon flavors and firm minerality. • 2011 Licia Albarino Rias Baixas 12.5% $14 This shows an almost herbal note early on nose followed by peach and dried lemon pith aromas. Quite smooth and polished in the mouth, though with no shortage of brightening acidity, this shows rather intense lemon, quince and almost tropical fruit flavors. The finish reverts to lighter apple notes but superimposed on lovely suggestions of green tea and hints of minerality. • 2010 Torres Sangre de Toro Vina Sol Blanco Catalunya Spain 11.5% $10 Rather aromatic in a narrow way with assertive notes of white flowers, stone and church incense/candlewax greeting the nose. Showing a touch of trapped co2, this www.fiestadcmagazine.com >

has a light spritz to it, which adds to the light bodied and fresh appeal. With light green apple, plum, and lemon zest flavors this is fresh and attractive, gaining a little edge of sweeter fruit on the backend, and then sweet lemon juice and floral aromatics on the moderately long finish. A lovely wine for summer sipping, uncomplicated, zesty and refreshing. • 2010 Gran Familia Verdejo Rueda Privada Castillo y Leon 13% $12 Melon, pigskin, and wet stone aromas greet the nose, along with a spark of flint. A lean, modest wine with nice tart melon flavors laid over a fairly mineral base. This is a bit austere in the mouth, with some quince notes building on the back end and through the fairly long, and fairly intensely flavored finish that shows some peach character. Unusual for a wine to finish with more intensity than it shows on the palate. This would be lovely with meaty white fish, simply grilled with olive oil. 87pts • 2012 El Coto Rioja Blanco 12.5% $9 Super intense on the nose with masses of red apple, peach and blueberry aromas. Bright and juicy if barely medium bodied in the mouth, this delivers plenty of orchard fruits supported by bright, pithy citrus flavored acidity and accented with a touch of minerality and a suggestion of sage. There’s a nice aromatic peachiness here that pops on the backend along with a little candied edge on the modest finish. •2012 Itsas Mendi Hondarrabi Zuri Bizkaiko Txakolina 12.5% $19 Floral with a hint of pine on the nose laid over a faintly peachy sweetness. With the barest suggestion of spritz, which is normal here, this washes over the palate

a touch loose and broad, delivering lightly mineral water streaked flavors of melon and apple that quickly yield to an assertive mineral note, tastes like mineral water high in potassium, on the moderately long finish. A bit simple, serve this chilled to help snap it back together. Great for simply prepared white fish. • 2011 Finca Antigua Viura La Mancha Spain 12.5% $11 Very floral on the nose with lots of pear fruit framed with hints of bread dough, white flowers, and mango. Stony on entry with light grapefruit pith, brie and bready flavors following. This is quite bright with plenty of acidity but it is a bit simple and finishes with only modest length though there is a nice clay and stone note to the finish. • 2010 Bodegas Breton Iuvene Rioja Viura 13% $10 Smells like ass, treebark and leather. Air helps clean things up allowing a soft floral note to emerge from the glass backed up by light hints of meaty peach fruits. Bright and juicy in the mouth, this has a lovely texture, smooth and polished though with some detail and it has pleasant if light flavors of lemon rind, creamy lees, and minerals that lead to a modest finish. Easy going though with a touch of complexity. • 2010 Joseph Masachs Resso Garnacha Blanca Catalunya 13.5% $7 Profoundly oily on the nose with lots of sweet, nutty character and some honeycomb accents. Fairly neutral in the mouth with good acidity supporting flavors of stones, oil, and a little peach and green orange. There’s a little sulphur appearing on the palate as well. The backend shows a touch of floral herbs as well but all is washed away in the tart, acidic finish.
