A note from Fig
Share the
Joy
HERE AT FIG, WE BELIEVE EVERYTHING IS BETTER WHEN YOU SHARE IT. A fleeting moment can become a lasting memory when you choose to share it with a loved one. When our team was planning this issue, we took inspiration from the festivities the winter season holds and how we are more than ready to celebrate again. Sometimes the best experiences happen in the most unexpected moments, like wrapping gifts by the fireplace, lighting holiday candles, or grabbing a drink with a friend while shopping. This year’s Gifting & Giving Issue celebrates the anticipation and excitement of all those little moments that lead up to great celebrations, shared experiences, and lifelong memories of shared joy.
If you’re looking for even more ways to invest in the Lehigh Valley community, in this issue you’ll also find our annual Fig Giving Back Guide featuring nonprofits who are caring for the Valley. We encourage you to find your passion, connect with one (or several), and work
alongside your neighbors to make good things happen.
After nine years of spreading the love local message, we could not be more passionate or committed to the Lehigh Valley. And we know you are too. We’ve heard from many of you personally, and we’ve seen the growth of the Valley over the years. It’s because of you that the Lehigh Valley has come so far. You are awesome and appreciated. Let’s keep the momentum going by keeping it local. No matter how much you have to give or spend, this season is all about this incredible community.
This holiday season share your time, your laughter, and your love for the Lehigh Valley.
JOYFULLY, KATE HUGHES

Take me to The Other Side
THE OTHER SIDE IS A BOUTIQUE AND SPA
RIGHT NEXT DOOR TO HAIR BY ESKANDALO!
They sell a curated selection of sustainable fashion, handmade vegan candles, jewelry from local designers, vintage finds, neon LED lights, vinyl records, and an array of other unique items.
“Our cozy little spa area is so sweet! There, we offer body waxing, facials, lash services such as tinting, lifting, and extensions, and we also do nails!” said owner Alison Leigh. “We even offer private shopping appointments so anyone can come in to shop and have the whole place to themselves. Bring a friend or a group! Take over the place!”
One thing The Other Side does not do is gender any of the clothing or services. They have created a safe space for anyone to experience what they do, regardless of their gender. They pride themselves on being inclusive and opening their doors to the LGBTQIA+ community.
This is also a space for art. They host art openings on First Fridays to showcase local artists with music, food, and beverages. They also have a photography studio where Alison takes photos and videos of their amazing customers in front of various backdrops and poster collage walls. They invite you to come see for yourself!
Each of the models is wearing items from The Other Side.
From surviving to thriving
A CERTIFIED EMDR (EYE MOVEMENT DESENSITIZATION REPROCESSING)
THERAPIST, Kayla Schubert-Wirth, MSW, LCSW (she/her) is one of only five EMDR Therapists in the Lehigh Valley. Grit & Grace provides the very best trauma therapy for individuals, families, and couples living in and around the Lehigh Valley.
“My goal is to get you from surviving to thriving— a sort of personal theme of my life. I grew up with dysfunction in the home, bullying throughout middle school, and teachers in high school told me to look at other ‘options’ as they didn’t think college was for me. If it weren’t for my therapist and a few incredible people in my life, I wouldn’t be here as a psychotherapist. I couldn’t be happier with my decision to listen to both my gut and my therapist and open a practice where staff and clients can feel safe, supported, and can begin to thrive,” Kayla said.
First of its kind
PIZZA,
WAS NEVER INTENDED TO ACTUALLY BE A THING But through the unnatural influence of the internet, one vegan’s search to fulfill his wildest pizza desires turned into a brick-and-mortar storefront—the first all-vegan pizza shop in Lehigh Valley.
“It’s nice to have those comfort foods like pizza and wings to bring back memories and flavors you’re used to but in a completely crueltyfree way,” Marc Kubushefski said.

KYLE EDWARDS BELIEVES WE ALL HAVE A PURPOSE. That is, a calling to contribute. As he puts it, “We were all created by a creator to create, to contribute, and leave our individual worlds just a bit better than how we found them.” More than that, he feels there is a moral obligation to pursue, attain, and live out our purpose. Through art, apparel, and entertainment, his goal is to inspire others to first learn to love themselves and in doing so, be inspired to follow their dreams and ultimately contribute to the greater good. “Life, for many, can be brutal. My deepest desire is to aid others in their efforts to fall in love with themselves and dream again. As long as I am here, through art, apparel, and entertainment, I will continue to do just that. Dreams provide strength and hope. Dreams inspire visions of what is possible. As the great James Allen put it, ‘The dreamers are the saviors of the world.’ My contributions are my dreams materialized,” he said.

WINTER IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER, and Wind Creek Bethlehem is working to keep the Lehigh Valley warm with its annual Winter Coat Drive . The drive was founded in 2021 after the organization sought to provide additional community support during the colder months.
Team Members at Wind Creek Bethlehem are encouraged to donate new or gently used winter apparel throughout the months of October and November. Donations are not limited to coats—in fact, Team Members
are encouraged to offload a wide variety of winter items, including jackets, pants, hats, scarves, and other cold-weather wear.
Currently, Team Members at Wind Creek Bethlehem have donated over 100 pieces of clothing. This year, Wind Creek Bethlehem will send the donations to two recipients, the Third Street Shelter and Lehigh Conference of Churches —both nonprofit organizations seeking to aid homeless men, women, and children in the Lehigh Valley.
“This is just another way that Wind Creek Bethlehem can offer support, especially as the temperatures begin to drop.”
— Kathy McCracken Executive Vice Presi dent and General Manager at Wind Creek Bethlehem

Changing lives since 1900
FOUNDED IN 1900, the Allentown Rescue Mission is the largest homeless shelter for men in the Lehigh Valley. The Allentown Rescue Mission helps homeless men 18 years and older reintegrate back into society with its three distinct programs: Emergency Shelter, Transformation Program, and Clean Team Workforce Re-Employment Program. In addition to providing the men with the basic necessities of food, shelter, clothing, and medical care, the programs identify
the individual needs of the guests and gives them the confidence and tools needed to succeed. The men receive one-on-one coaching, faith-based education, life skills classes, and paid transitional employment. By the time the men leave the Allentown Rescue Mission, they’ve typically saved enough money for an apartment, secured permanent employment, and have been restored as productive members of the community.
Get Involved
The Allentown Rescue Mission is almost exclusively non-government funded, relying on the support of individuals and local businesses. To make a monetary or in-kind donation, or to learn more about ways to help, visit their website. Follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
Meet the man who decided to “flip it”
ALLENTONIAN TOM CARSON SERVED IN THE UNITED STATES AIR FORCE FROM 2003–2011. After struggling with his transition from the military back to living in Allentown, Tom was very close to becoming homeless. So he did one of the hardest things he has ever had to do—he asked for help. According to Tom, he shortly moved into his mother’s basement and spent months feeling self-pity and sorrow before he made the decision to flip his life around. He enrolled in college and started selling sports memorabilia at flea markets, antique malls, and online Facebook groups.
Tom now holds degrees in Criminal Justice from Northampton Community College and a degree in Rehabilitation and Human Services from Penn State University.
He has been working in Human Service for the last
seven years and has a passion for helping others. Tom started as an intern, then became a Case Manager, then the Program Director, then Associate Executive Director, and is now the Executive Director of Victory House of Lehigh Valley.
He also owns his own business and coaching platform, Flip It Collectibles, where he sells collectibles, vintage clothing, and sports memorabilia, and coaches other people on how to do the same.
He’s spoken at various events and trainings, including The Department of Veterans Affairs VA CHALLENGE meeting, Northampton County Resource Fair, Northampton County Crisis Intervention Training, and Penn State University.
Tom has been featured on multiple podcasts and in multiple publications like: Lehigh Valley Business, Salisbury Press, and Yahoo Finance.

FOR MORE THAN 100 YEARS, United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley has served the people in the community by investing in lasting solutions in education, healthy aging, and community stability. Community-wide change is at the heart of what they do, but they can’t do it alone.
They believe UNITED we can give our children the education they deserve, our aging adults the benefits they’ve earned, and our community the support it needs to thrive. Together, we can build tomorrow today.
Every gift counts no matter how small. Learn how you can create lasting change at unitedwayglv.org/donate.

PAW IS THE BRAINCHILD
PROJECT
OF KELLY BAUER, Executive Director of the Center for Animal Health & Welfare. A true labor of love five years in the making, Bauer wanted a place that was entrenched in the community to serve not only the four legged, but also their two legged friends.
Project Paw also features Betty’s Corner, the Lehigh Valley’s first and only cat café, and Resale to the Rescue, which upcycles donated items and offers them at bargain prices. With the help of Project Paw’s Director, Dan Higgins, Bauer’s dream is coming true. All proceeds from Betty’s Corner and Resale to the
Rescue are used to fund programs for the residents of Easton. With Higgin’s dry humor and Bauer’s over the top ideas, Project Paw is a community meeting place. Whether you are shopping or cuddling cats, your support helps Project Paw bring kindness and smiles to Easton’s downtown and beyond.
Giving Back: Thomas Makhoul Scholarship Fund
“YOU GROW THROUGH WHAT YOU GO THROUGH” is a motto of Elias Makhoul, Assistant Director of Information Services in Development and Alumni Relations at Lehigh University. He would know—he has grown through a lot over the past several years.
In July 2018, just hours after a cousin’s birthday party, Elias’ brother, Thomas, died of cardiac arrest. Known as Thunder Tom and The East Side Legend, Thomas was as outgoing as Elias was introverted. He was beloved throughout the East Allentown community for his visits on his bicycle and his schedule of phone calls to keep up with family and friends. Thomas could not go on to college after William Allen High School but always cheered on those who did.
To celebrate that support and to honor Thomas, Elias and his family founded the Thomas Makhoul Scholarship Fund—and Elias helped complete the IRS nonprofit paperwork from a hospital bed.
Like Thomas, his mother, and sisters, Elias has inherited a life-threatening heart condition. In May 2019, he learned that his heart was functioning at only five percent capacity and that he would require a transplant. He gave himself one day to absorb the emotional impact, then began looking forward. A heart became available nine days later, and after cardiac rehabilitation and physical therapy, Elias went back to work both at his job and fundraising for the scholarship with his family.
A senior at William Allen received the first scholarship in 2020, and by 2022, the family has expanded it to include Dieruff High School. Given that Thomas loved to bowl, Elias and his sisters have hosted ThunderBowl and a basket raffle as an annual fundraiser. Elias, who also writes a food blog, received the support of restaurants and local businesses with gift cards and donations. Looking ahead, he hopes that he and his sisters can explore other avenues to raise funds.
Elias has found joy in his niece, Bowie Thomae, who was born seven weeks after Thomas’ death. He’s also become more outgoing, like Thomas. His motto for making connections the way his brother did: “Open your mind and open your heart.”

Fig Authentic: Avanté Kendall
FOR AVANT É KENDALL, BREAKING NEW GROUND IS BORN OUT OF A DESIRE to try new things and perform. As a young male competing for the roles traditionally assigned to women, he puts self-doubt aside, leaning into his goals and talent born out of practice, practice, practice. “I learned from my family to go after what you want, to be unstoppable,” Avanté said. “They have always supported me.” As a result, Avanté is a young adult with an authentic sense of self-forging new ground for himself and others.
URSULA
Avanté’s confidence comes with a disarming sense of ease, despite the fact this young man has been paving new paths since middle school. In eighth grade, he played the lead part of Ursula in The Little Mermaid , a character typically played by a woman. How did he do it? He really wanted a lead role. “It started jokingly, like, I am going to play Ursula,” he laughs. “Then I got serious, thinking I can really do this!” Avanté admits that his director was skeptical at first. “If you can pull it off...,” she said. He too had his doubts; could he play Ursula in drag? But pull it off he did. “I think it was the way I embodied Ursula. She is sassy, she’s not afraid, she’s powerful, even scary!” Once cast, everyone was supportive. “They saw I was right for the part,” he said. Even the opening night worries about the audience reaction faded quickly. “The first night, opening the show was a hit, and the audience was happy and clapping,” Avanté said. “I didn’t give it another thought.”
MAJORETTES
Avanté was not done breaking ground. Moving into high school, he had his sights on becoming a majorette. Twirling since eighth grade, Avanté put his mind on practice, not on barriers. “I practiced all the time, all night, I practiced constantly,” he said. Not only did he make the squad, becoming only the second male to do so, Avanté will also go down in history as Liberty High School’s first head male majorette.
THE PATH AHEAD
Avanté’s aware that he’s broken through gendered roles, making space for others to follow. His advice is to focus on
DETERMINED, CONFIDENT & HARDWORKING
being authentic, true to yourself, and to push forward.
“My generation, we tend to not try new things, stick with what we know, we need to be more outgoing,” he said.
Avanté’s undaunted determination shows how interests met with persistence can have surprising results. Others, it seems, will be able to see what we see in ourselves.
Avanté is not sure what exaclty the future holds but says, “I know performing will be part of it!”
