A NOTE FROM FIG
Slow down and savor the season W H AT E V E R T H E S E A S O N , B E T H L E H E M I S A P R E T T Y S P E C I A L P L A C E —but this is the time of year when our city really shines. It’s the Christmas City, after all, and every corner is decked out in holiday sparkle. There’s so much to put on our 2017 holiday calendars: performances like The Bach Choir’s glorious “A Child’s Christmas” concert and Touchstone Theatre’s rollicking “Christmas City Follies,” shopping at the ever-festive Christkindlmarkt or the huts of Christmas City Village, BHDA’s Holiday House Tour, the Trees of Historic Bethlehem exhibit at sites throughout the downtown, and the enchanting model trains at Black Diamond Society of Model Engineers, just to name a few.
thoughtfully and locally for family and friends—and maybe pick up a little something for yourself. And in our Giving Guide, we’ve gathered a list of worthy nonprofits doing good work in and around Bethlehem. Here, you’ll find inspiration on how to give back, now and all year-round.
With places to go, parties to host, and presents to wrap, it’s easy to get caught up in the “to-dos.” It’s important to remind ourselves to slow down, savor the moment, and breathe—to discover joy in the midst of holiday madness. Pausing to recapture a sense of wonder, we make room to truly appreciate the warmth of the season.
My wish this holiday season is that each one of you is able to fully experience the delights of the season— and enjoy some downtime, too. As you check things off your lists during this busy time of year, be sure to slow down and enjoy the wonder of the details: the clip-clop of hooves from a horse-drawn carriage, the smell of freshly-baked cookies, a perfectly tied ribbon, the smile of a loved one opening your thoughtful gift.
As we celebrate the magic of the holidays, we are giving meaningfully this year to the ones we love. We are giving gifts and giving back, finding ways to enrich and enhance the community with both our presents and our presence. Explore the Gifting Guide in this issue and you’ll find ideas on how to shop
As we celebrate our fourth year of living local, all of us at Fig wish you and yours the happiest of holidays. KIERA WILHELM & THE FIG INDUSTRIES TEAM

F R E S H FA C E Welcoming new businesses to Bethlehem. Evan Robinson Owner
Fresh Face: 36E Fitness AFTER YEARS of wearing many hats for big gyms like L.A. Fitness and Gold’s, Evan Robinson was ready to strike out on his own. “I decided to chase the dream,” he says, “and try to do better than the criticism I heard from members at the big box gyms.” Thus, 36E Fitness was born. The gym contains a state-of-the-art, upscale fitness studio meant to be used by one client and one trainer at a time. “You can’t get privacy in a big box gym,” Evan says, where a member once told him: “I’m so tired of getting caught in everyone else’s selfies!” Evan decided that, when he opened his own place,
he’d make it personal. “When they come here for an hour with me,” he says, “it’s their hour and no one else’s.” Just you, the trainer, and your favorite music playing—no headphones needed. In addition to individual fitness and nutrition plans, 36E recently expanded next door and started boxing and kickboxing sessions for small groups. These sessions feature a progresstracking and team-building technology called “Impact Wraps.” At the end of a workout, it presents your workout stats on a digital display. You can even challenge and compete against friends. A lifelong fitness enthusiast, Evan is
also a firm believer in positive, win-win thinking. Evan doesn’t just promote himself, he promotes all of the local businesses. He always wanted to open on Main Street to add to the strong small business environment, and he found the perfect fit in the commons building under Brew Works. Discover customized programs to meet your goals—without the long challenging contracts of typical gyms. “I’m here to offer people the best fitness, strength, and conditioning services at a really reasonable rate,” Evan says, “and I believe that, as a people, if we all work together it benefits everybody.”

F R E S H FA C E Welcoming new businesses to Bethlehem. Susan and Jim Dale, Owners
Fresh Face: Playa Bowls YO U ’ D B E F O R G I V E N for not knowing about one of the tastiest and healthiest new restaurants on the South Side, because they don’t advertise. But Playa Bowls has a cult following at the Jersey shore, where people will stand in line for an hour. Their menu features bowls of Acai, Pitaya, Green (kale), Coconut, Chia, or Oatmeal with a variety of toppings. Jim Dale was a devotee of Playa Bowls long before he had the chance to open his own franchise in Bethlehem. “I asked a close friend of mine, who supplies Playa Bowls with their coffee, if they were franchising,” he says. “After that,
I met with owners Rob and Abby, and we hit it off.” Playa Bowls doesn’t advertise because Jim would rather give back to the community instead of worrying about advertising. “It’s something I’m having the time of my life doing,” he says. Jim and his wife, Susan, even designed and built the store themselves. “I love running the business with the people who work here,” he says. “All of the people who’ve worked for me have been unbelievable.” Including several millennials who, Jim comments, have disproved the common stereotypes
about their generation. “I’m totally impressed by their work ethic,” he says, “and how they step up when you need them to.” Not only have his employees provided the needed support, so has the city. “I cannot say enough good things about the City of Bethlehem,” he says. “Every department has bent over backwards to make sure I got open on time, and helped make that happen.” Ultimately for Jim, it’s all about the customers: the more you treat them right, the more they come back—and the business will take care of itself.

baking holiday treats, cozying up to a crackling fireplace, visiting good friends—the holidays are all about tradition. Some new, some classic, and all of them uniquely our own, we create memories and cherish past experiences all at once. One of the most universally treasured holiday traditions is exchanging gifts with loved ones. Simple or grand, gifts are an expression of caring. In Bethlehem, we value “shopping small,” and we’re fortunate to have local shops offering an eclectic assortment of distinctive and thoughtful gifts that add even more meaning to our gifting exchange. On the following pages you can explore a curated collection sourced from right here in Bethlehem and our surrounding community. This season, stop by in person to see all that our local shops have to offer: browse, say hi, and pick up a gift that is personal and perfectly unique. (And tell them Fig sent you!)

AUTHENTIC Leading the way through innovation and example.
Authentic: Bill George B I L L G E O R G E , a co-founder of Touchstone Theatre, grew up in many large cities around the world, but he fell in love with Lehigh University’s campus. “I loved the trees, I loved the hill, I loved the churches,” he says. “And, when you come into South Bethlehem, the cultural variety is incredible.” It was at Lehigh that Bill had come under the mentorship of John Pearson, the charismatic head of the drama department. “John literally died in my arms in 1976 from an aneurysm,” Bill says. “He had sent me off to graduate school and when I came back we were going to form a theater company at the university. That experience was like
getting branded with a hot iron.” Bill, along with his wife, Bridget, John’s wife Barbara, and Lehigh University Art Galleries’ Ricardo Viera, immediately got to work on realizing a vision—People's Theatre Company—that was eventually to evolve into Touchstone. Touchstone is now one of the longest-living, continuously functioning ensembles in the country. Twenty years ago, when Bethlehem Steel died, Touchstone did a piece called “Steelbound,” based on “Prometheus Bound.” Except Prometheus (a role played by Bill himself), instead of being a demigod, was a steelworker;
and instead of bringing fire down from the sun, he brings steel and gets punished by the gods of progress. Today, Touchstone wants to revisit the issue of how Bethlehem defines itself, with a new project called “Festival Unbound,” scheduled for October 2019. With it, Bill and Touchstone are asking: What do you think of the challenges we’re facing as a community? What’s going to help us successfully face these challenges? Touchstone Theatre has been interested in these questions since its very beginning, Bill says. “How do we build a more collaborative, creative, and compassionate community?”

GIVING BACK Making a difference in the lives of others.
Giving Back: Ray Rodriguez T W E N T Y- S I X Y E A R S A G O , Ray Rodriguez moved from the Bronx to Bethlehem for a different life. He had grown up hustling on the streets of New York City, but by the time his first child was born, he had had enough. “When I came out here, I heard no gunshots —I heard birds and crickets. What a difference!” Today, Ray gives back to the community he loves through his work at the food pantry in the Mollard Hospitality Center at New Bethany Ministries where, last year, they distributed more than 41,000
meals. But the road between moving to this community and serving it was a difficult one. Drug addiction and mental illness took over. “My wife at the time became my get-high partner,” he says, “and it got to the point where I thought I’d lose my kids, so the best thing for me to do was get the help I needed.” Ray ended up homeless in 1999 and went to Safe Harbor in Easton for 30 days. After that, he found New Bethany and started volunteering. He’s been there ever since, moving to his current part time position two years ago.
“I love cooking,” he says, “that’s my passion.” Last year the Bethlehem Police Department wanted to help cook and serve Thanksgiving dinner. “It turned out real good,” Ray says, “and I ended up cooking 32 turkeys.” Ray’s got a passion for cooking, sure, but it’s inseparable from his passion for helping others. He’s been there, he’s fought through it, and has been giving back to the people who are now where he once was. “At the end of the day,” says Ray, “all the employees here are one big family happy to help those less fortunate.”

DEVIL’S THE
DISCIPLE BY
GEORGE BERNAR
D SHAW
FEBRUARY 21 TO MARCH 4, 2018

With the tumult of the American Revolution as its backdrop, Shaw sets an unlikely story of sacrifice and honor. When Dick Dudgeon—the black sheep of the family—is mistaken for a charismatic minister, he is imprisoned by the Loyalist forces. An ingenious mixture of comedy, adventure, and romance, The Devil’s Disciple asks: who is the saint and who is the sinner?

WHEN CAROLINA HERNANDEZ CAME TO LEHIGH UNIVERSITY 17 years ago as part of AmeriCorp’s VISTA program, her directive was to focus the University’s volunteer efforts on South Bethlehem. Hernandez, now Assistant Dean and Director of the newly expanded Community Service Office, also emphasizes an approach of working “with” the local community and not “for.” “As an educational institution, we want to show our students how to become active, engaged, and effective citizens—no matter what community they ultimately become a part of,” she said. There is little doubt Hernandez and her student team have been successful in their charge. They’ve created enormously popular and effective flagship programs such as Spooktacular and Spring Fling— and the Great South Side Sale, which raises roughly $20,000 each June to fund Homework Clubs by recycling discarded items from campus at rock bottom prices at the end of the academic year. Those one-on-one tutoring sessions by Lehigh students have resulted in measurable improved academic performance by the students, as well as increased support and engagement by parents. But Hernandez and the thousands of volunteers she’s mentored at Lehigh insist that they are the ultimate beneficiaries. As departing graduate Katie MacLachlan said last year, “This program is a defining part of who I am at Lehigh…you helped change who I am for the better.”
