New immigrants relive the past at Lower Fort Garry
L
ower Fort Garry has been the learning piece of history for every Canadian and on July 7th the Filipino Journal hosted our "bagong dating" (new immigrants) to the beginnings of Manitoba history. This historic place, now called as Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site of Canada, is a must see for everyone, thanks to the National Parks and National Historic Sites which protect the country’s national and cultural treasures. Since its construction started in 1830 and its completion in 1840s, the Lower Fort Garry had been the centre of trade of the Hudson's Bay Company. After moving from the Forks where the original Fort Garry once stood, Lower Fort Garry had become an essential supply and distribution centre for fur and trade goods. Industrial complex was in use during the 1860’s Thus, Lower Fort Garry’s thriving agricultural and industrial production provided many of the materials needed in the fur trade. This is also the site where the treaty was made between the chiefs and representatives of the Aboriginal people and the Crown.

Part of the this vast historic site, the Big House was the dwelling for the Hudson`s Bay Company`s officers or business executives. It remains today as one of the more elegant examples of such a house and is considered the oldest building in the complex. Our tour of Lower Fort Garry started by the Fur Loft with Yzah Macalintal dressed in 1830’s period costumes, a 2nd year UBC student working at Lower Fort Garry who’s part of a federal student work employment program. Each part of the site has costumed tour guides and they talk in the present tense as if it were 1850’s when people came and engaged in business at Lower Fort Garry. The group visited the Farm Manager’s house, Blacksmith Shop, the Retail Store/Museum where you can still find those goods sold during those years; followed by looking at the Men's House which served as the residence for the laborers and tradesmen who came from other communities and abroad. "This is a great project which the Filipino Journal has embarked for it is the best way to introduce the new comers to Canadian history,"
Larry Vickar, president and CEO of Vickar Autogroup, one of the event sponsors, said during the tour with his wife, Tova Vickar. Larry was invited to have a tea with the lady of the house. The guide even played a special piano piece for Larry and Tova, It seems that the day is not enough to grasp the historical significance of the Lower Fort Garry. As one of the new comers said: "Thank you po, for letting us know the history of Winnipeg, and I will not forget this day because I have gone to this historic place. Parang "Fort Santiago."

What Counts as Years of Education in an Immigration Application
W
hen applying to immigrate to Canada, individuals are typically required to prove the number of years of education that they have completed. In some cases, individuals have completed a year or more of education in an educational program they never completed. Can these years of education be counted? The Federal Court says no. In the cases of Khan, Kabir, and Hasan, the Federal Court of Appeal ruled that when assessing points for education, a visa officer cannot award points for years of studies that did not contribute to an educational credential being assessed. As a result, visa officers must give credit only for those years of study used towards the achievement of the specific educational credential. This means the following: 1. If a person has two Masters degrees, they will not receive extra credit for the number of years studying the second Master degree. 2. If an individual had to repeat a year in an educational program because he or she failed that year, he or she will not get credit for the year that he or she failed.
3. If a person completes a number of years of studies and then switches to another educational program in unrelated field, he/she will not get credit for those years. If the number of years of education is necessary to establish eligibility to immigrate to Canada, you should carefully calculate which years will count. lack a sense of professionalism and a strong sense of leadership— the very essence of what they are trying to be. by aLfie vera mella elfideas102@yahoo.com
Have You Been Doing Your Homework? (On Diligence, Credibility, and Professional Responsibility) “Life is a continuous learning and unlearning process.”
A Sense of Professional Responsibility If you are a lawyer, I expect you to be very knowledgeable of the laws of the country where you live, especially the particular area of legal practice you are specializing in as well as the latest amendments to such laws. If you're a doctor or a nurse, you should be knowledgeable of and updated with at least the basic medical or nursing routines and procedures, respectively. If you are a writer, you should know how to write a complete sentence and when to end it with a period or when with a question mark.
If you are a community leader, you should be aware of the happenings in the community, like the various cultural events, for instance; and you should be a regular reader of community newspapers to know the issues and current updates. It's frustrating to observe how many so-called professionals and leaders fail miserably in doing their tasks and responsibilities because they don’t do their homework diligently. They often succumb to laziness, stagnancy, indifference, and ignorance, and usually arrogantly proclaim that what they learned back in school was enough to get them by. They

The diligence in making this possible by continuous learning is where credibility originates. And this is a responsibility of every professional or leader.

Dolphy: the Man, the Laughter, the Legend
T
he measure of greatness of the man who made millions of Filipinos laugh can’t be measured by a National Artist Award conferred by a committee and anointed by Malacañang. Indeed Dolphy’s significance as a national treasure transcended any award from men or laws. A true-blooded Manileño, Rodolfo Vera Quizon, Jr. was born on the 25th of 1928 in Tondo, Manila as the second of 10 children of Melencio Quizon, a ship mechanic, and Salud Vera Quizon, a tailor. Recollections of his boyhood were filled with memories of variety shows at Life and Avenue theaters, yet the skinny and asthmatic Dolphy would confess later that his initial dream was to join the US Navy. The gangly teenager did odd jobs as a shoeshine boy, factory helper, porter, and calesa driver while watching the then very popular vaudeville shows. He also frequented the at Life and Avenue theaters watching vaudeville shows while selling peanuts. Dolphy started his career at age 16 as a chorus boy. He adopted the name Golay and often performed with big stars of the era that include Fernando Poe, Sr., Bayani Casimiro, and the comedy duo Pugo and Tugo. It was World War II. His comic tandem with
Panchito began during their stints in the radio. In 1952, Sampaguita Pictures paid him P1,000.00 per movie as he debuted in the big screen which starred the love team of Pancho Magalona and Tita Duran. In 1954, he made the first of many gay roles in “Jack and Jill”, an adaptation of a Mars Ravelo komiks serial. After his contract with Sampaguita expired in 1964, Dolphy at age 36 ventured on the television industry. His first project for ABS-CBN was “Buhay Artista”, which became a Sunday evening hit for eight years. It starred Dolphy, Panchito, Ading Fernando, and Dolphy’s vaudeville colleagues Teroy de Guzman, Babalu, and Bayani Casimiro. In 1965, Dolphy put up his own film company, RVQ Productions, whose first venture was a movie version of “Buhay Artista”. He scored one of his biggest box-office hits as actor and producer in 1969 with “Pacifica Falayfay”. In 1973, Dolphy transferred to RPN Channel 9 where Ading Fernando created the sitcom “John en Marsha”. It starred Dolphy as the poor but principled John Puruntong who married a rich woman’s daughter, Nida Blanca’s Marsha, but refused any financial help from his mother-

in-law, Doña Delilah, portrayed by Dely Atay-Atayan. “John en Marsha” ran for a record 17 straight years until 1990. In 1978 Dolphy starred in the Lino Brocka drama “Ang Tatay Kong Nanay” as a gay parent to child wonder Niño Muhlach. Dolphy lived a colorful personal life. He never married but fathered 18 children by six different women, all of whom he supported financially. Certainly, Dolphy’s greatest love was Zsa Zsa Padilla, the singer and actress 36 years younger, who had been his devoted partner in the last 22 years of his life. In November 2010, Pres. Noynoy Aquino bestowed the Grand Collar of the Order of the Golden Heart on Dolphy, the highest honor given to a private citizen by the President of the Philippines. His peers believed he deserved to be named National Artist in his lifetime and nominated him twice during the term of Pres. Arroyo. On July 10, 2012 Dolphy died at 8:34 p.m. at the Makati Medical Center due to complications from pneumonia, 15 days shy of his 84th birthday, ending a career spanned six decades and 13 Presidents from Jose P. Laurel to Noynoy Aquino, and encompassing the vaudeville stage, radio, movies, and television.

My Ride Ron Cantiveros
2012 Lexus CT 200h Review
I
t’s sporty. It’s fun. It’s a hybrid. A luxury hybrid by Lexus. After driving several hybrid electric vehicles in the last six months, they’re not fun to drive. I love the roar of engines on the open road. In most hybrids, there is no engine roar, as speed and acceleration are sacrificed for fuel efficiency. Comfort is almost secondary in hybrid electric vehicles. Driving the 2012 Lexus CT 200h changed that concept. While there was no roaring engine, the luxury comforts in the Lexus 4-door hatchback certainly made the week long road test enjoyable. Just driving up to the car, you could see the bright Daybreak Yellow Mica finish a block away and with a colour that vivid, it screams, “Look at me, I'm fun!” Step one in making hybrid cars more fun to drive: Give them crazy colours. The people I ran into either hated or loved the colour and there was no middle ground. The luxury styling added to the high rate of head turns from fellow drivers and the "Lexus nod" from a couple Lexus owners. Jumping into the driver’s seat, I instantly noticed the premium styling of this luxury hybrid starting off with the refined leather interior, baseball stitching of the steering wheel, leather seats, front rim of the dashboard and along the edges of the centre console. The Lexus CT200h base price starts at $30,950 and available with five different package options. The Touring Package ($32,950) adds a power moonroof and 17” aluminum alloy wheels. The Premium Package ($35,950) upgrades the audio
system to a 10-speaker 6-Disc CD changer, auto dimming rear view and side mirrors with a backup camera and rain sensing wipers. The F-Sport Package ($36,350) provides sportier finishes including a mesh grille, and rear spoiler. Throw in the Technology Package ($39,350) and you get a voice activated navigation system with a haptic feedback control, headlamp washers and LED headlamps. The Lexus CT200h engine features a 1.8-litre, 4-cylinder 16-valve DOHC Atkinson engine coupled with a powerful electric motor and compact hybrid battery that can produce a maximum output of 134hp. Published fuel efficiency rating from Lexus are 4.5/100km in the city, 4.8L/100kms on the highway and 4.6L/100km combined. There were three different driver control options all accessible by a large knob on the centre console. My favourite was the Sport mode which turned the greeneco dash display to a glowing red tachometer and provides a more power and faster acceleration. The fuel saving EV mode is only available at very low speeds below 40km/hr and instantly disabled during quick acceleration. Eco mode was great for the morning and afternoon commutes and makes driving more efficient. The engine is remarkably quiet. Even when the gas was pressed to the floor, all I could hear was a higher purring sound coming from the Lexus Hybrid Drive engine. No engine roar, no squealing tires and a deadly quiet hybrid engine not designed to catch the
2012 Lexus CT200h in Daybreak Yellow Mica.
attention of anyone within earshot. On the other hand, the Daybreak Yellow Mica finish caught everyone’s attention. As far as other competing vehicles, you could look at the similar hybrid vehicles such as the Toyota Prius V, Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, and Honda Civic Hybrid. As a 4-door hatchback, don't forget to include the VW Golf, Ford Focus and Mazda 3 in your comparisons. Luxury leather interior.

W
innipeg's newest LGBT theatre group Prairie Q Productions is proud to present "AGAINST THE WALL" at Venue #5, Son of Warehouse. A new play by 3 time Best of Fest winner Primrose Madayag Knazan. Prairie Q Productions is the brain child of Adam Jennings. The mandate is simple – tell stories that celebrate and represent parts of the LGBT community. The debut production “Against the Wall” is a story about bullying and the effects it has on someone, whether it be the victim or the silent witness. “Against the Wall” also tells the story of two gay men as they navigated their way through adolescence. Ash escaped into the world of C.C. Bloom, while Steve escaped on the field. They came from two different worlds, yet longed for the same thing… Her words changed them. When writing the show local playwright Primrose Madayag Knazan recalled true stories of

friends, and cast members. The script is what you many call factual fiction. The experiences characters deal with have happened to someone she knows to some degree. The character of Ash tells tales of growing up that mirror events that have happened to Adam Jennings The show features four actors playing various characters. The two male actors portray the central figures and the two women act as a Greek Chorus of sorts. The Greek Chorus will portray characters of all ages and genders. As the story shifts in time it is revealed how the two men, Ash and Steve are connected. The character of Evs uses her marker and writes various quotes on bathroom walls, these writings help to shape the men and eventually help to connect them. The play will be directed as a collective - with each member of Prairie Q sharing ideas and supporting each other in a positive and playful manner. The cast features - Michael Hancharyk, Adam Jennings, Spenser Payne and Christine Reinfort. With Stage Management by Sheena Sanderson.

Northern Lights dance across the night sky
Thanks to one of the strongest solar storms to hit Earth last weekend, people all across Canada were treated to a spectacular light show in the sky. While most of Winnipeg was under a hazy night sky, I was fortunate enough to catch the show from Betula Lake in the Whiteshell Provincial Park. Photo by Ron Cantiveros.

Horoscope You can look forward to a good day. Career will be promising and beneficial. So long as you continue to heed the work &life balance lessons of the past, this gives you a chance to ensure that the wheels are running smoothly on the home front.
With some major relationship developments from next month onwards, do what you can now to ensure the communication lines are open. Be alert towards work. Your energy is high but you will restrict yourself to play it safe. In general, you will find an average day.
It is a thoughtful day. More travel is possible at work front. You’ll be expressing your affection more strongly than usual. The change of attitude will help you to see things clearer and also assist you in getting what you really want.Today, compromise is the key word for you.
PAHALANG
You can feel connected to many people but to feel connected enough to pursue a romantic relationship could take time for you to develop. You’re entering a period of emotional change now: feeling two ways at once without getting too deep into either polarity is possible.Fortunately, all turned out well and you have peace of mind.
You are very congenial and cooperative now and more interested in the similarities than in the differences between yourself and others. It takes time and work to develop a relationship worthy of the title love and if a lasting bond is what you desire you’ve got to be prepared to do what it takes to make it work.
Reaching your goals is your number one priority right now. Now is a time for communicating your enthusiasm, sharing your plans and dreams and also being more receptive to others’ thoughts and point of view. The day will turn out to be quite pleasant as far as personal relationships are concerned.
When the universe smiles on financial affairs, so do you, Scorpio and right now you’re in for a good ride. Few things in life are given to you without the expectation of a return so you can expect to work for whatever you receive. Bounce your ideas off a friend or co-worker to strengthen your presentation.
In order to achieve healthy levels of activity in all areas of life you need to first commit to yourself and your goals. You hear some good news which will move you forward in your plans. This is your day to enjoy as you can finally see the dream becoming reality. Personal relationships will be good.
You are committed to your purpose and accept that it may take time to achieve all you want to. With this attitude and a little faith, you can be given the power to accomplish just about anything you want to. At the work front, care should be taken as some hurdles are possible.
This is a good time to look at the world around you and observe those that have greater restrictions placed upon themselves than you do. You will find yourself better able to take charge of your daily routine and let it energize you rather than drag you down. Your dreams and wishes are about to come true but you may need to hold on to your seat.
Great personal life will make you happy. Excellent cooperation in partnerships and friendships is highlighted now. For those of you already experiencing the gifts love offers, continue to enjoy and develop the bond.If you begin to notice a few issues crop up in your romantic relationship, it’s a good idea to use your time right now to solve them if possible. Today you will find something that you misplaced a few weeks or months ago. Some adjustment or adaptation to new routines, or a relinquishment of a personal interest, may be necessary to maintain peace and harmony. Emotionally, this will be an active day. When it comes to physical fitness, this is a perfect day.

Get Out of the Way, Poseurs! Here Comes PiL (The Return of Public Image Limited)
O
ne of the true pioneers of Postpunk music—John Lydon (aka Johnny Rotten) with his post–Sex Pistols band, Public Image Limited (PiL), is back with a 12-song new album after 20 years! The lead single off this ninth album is "One Drop." Without much ado, it sounds very PiL, having all the proper ingredients— bouncy basslines, funky and angular guitars, stinging lyrics sung in the typical Rotten's sneery manner, and a hint of synth sounds on the background. Recommended earlier songs by PiL are "Death Disco," "Open and Revolving," "Seattle," "This Is Not a Love Song," "Disappointed," and "Rise"; from the latest album, “I Must Be Dreaming,” “The Room I Am In,” and “Out of the Woods.” PiL’s complete discography consists of nine albums: First Issue (1978), Metal Box (1979), The Flowers of Romance (1981), This Is What You Want... This Is What You Get (1984), Album (1986), Happy? (1987), 9 (1989), That What Is Not
(1992), and This Is PiL (2012). Currently with Lydon in PiL are Lu Edmonds (a former guitarist of The Damned), Bruce Smith (onetime drummer for The Slits
Final Note Lydon formed PiL with guitarist Keith Levene and bassist Jah Wobble in 1978 in London, England, after the breakup of Sex Pistols. Whereas the music of Sex Pistols was straightforward and minimalist Punk, PiL’s is Postpunk—more structured and features more instruments and other sonic elements. Sex Pistols’ popular songs included “Anarchy in the U.K.,” “God Save the Queen,” Holidays in the Sun,” and their version of the Paul Anka original “My Way.”

s pinays, our cheeks tend to be less defined or flat. With the correct technique of enhancing our cheeks, we can give our complexion a pretty pinkish glow or even contour the face to look slimmer. You can definitely create the visual appearance of beautiful cheeks by choosing the right shade for your skin. Ensure that the blush you choose works well with your skin tone and looks as natural as possible. When it comes to putting blush on, look in the mirror and suck your cheeks in. This way you will be able to see your cheekbones better. You want to sweep the powder blush on lightly right on the cheekbones. You will then place the brush beside your nose where your cheeks are most rounded and move the brush up to your temples to create a “C” shape. This will cause the blush to illuminate your cheeks. Once you have applied the blush, for extra cheek perfection, you can go over the area with a light dusting of shimmer powder. Remember to not use too much shimmer. Only brush it lightly with a small brush or even the tips of your fingers on the rounded parts of your cheeks to highlight this area. Once you are done, smile in the mirror and make sure that you’re perfectly blushed.

What’s Next for Munoz?
T
he Filipino Wrecking Machine was one fight away from a shot at the UFC’s Middleweight Championship. The key word: “was”. Last Wednesday he ran into a wall by the name of Chris Weidman. Munoz was scheduled to face Chael Sonnen with the winner getting a title shot against Anderson Silva. In their college days, Munoz beat Sonnen in a wrestling match. Boasting a heavier ground and pound as well as better submission game, many had Munoz as the favorite. Unfortunately, The Filipino fighter had to pull out of the fight due to bone spurs in his elbow. He went into surgery, while British fighter, Michael Bisping took his place. It was a fight Sonnen won via decision and went on to face Silva. As for Mark Munoz, his first fight back happened just days after Anderson Silva retained his title by handily beating Sonnen
via TKO in the second round. The main event of UFC on Fuel TV featured Munoz against up and comer Chris Weidman. A product of Serra-Longo Fight Team, he’s a well-rounded, fighter, with slick jiu jitsu who had yet to taste defeat. Weidman’s last fight was a decision win over one time contender, Damien Maia, who Munoz also has a win over. Round one of their fight did not go in Munoz’s favor. He was taken down at will by Weidman and controlled. But if round one was a bad round for Munoz, round two would prove to be much worse. Weidman dropped the Filipino Wrecking Machine with an elbow, then pounded him into unconsciousness. A finish that even referee, Josh Rosenthal, admits went too long. In the aftermath of this fight, Weidman now looks like a world beater. No longer an untested newcomer, but a top five middleweight, one who many are saying has the tools to uncrown
the greatest MMA fighter today, Anderson Silva. While Mark Munoz finds himself at the bottom of the ladder. A loss like that knocks a contender down quite a bit. Ring rust had to have played a role in his defeat as he did not have that same spark he’s had in past fights. The options for Mark Munoz are slim. He’s too big to cut down to welterweight and too small to head back up to light heavyweight. He’ll have to start from the bottom to work his way back up to title contention, and at 34 years old, it will be difficult. However, it’s not impossible. Let’s not forget that Mark Munoz is still one of the most talented fighters in the UFC’s middleweight division. He took a difficult fight after elbow surgery and it didn’t go his way. Once he comes back, I feel pity for the next fighter that has to run into a hungry, ready Filipino Wrecking Machine.

Down & Dirty Adventures
T
he mud was literally everywhere and I felt bad for the janitor that had to clean up after us. Running 5km on dry solid pavement is relatively easy. Throw in some obstacles, lots of water, and mud and you have yourself an adventure race. Running was next to impossible as I tried to lift my feet which were stuck in a foot of mud. I nearly lost my shoes doing so. The obstacle course was just less than 5km and we were at the MS Rush Adventure Challenge at Adrenaline Adventures. Adventure racing is something quite new to me. I play ultimate frisbee, run half marathons and marathon relays, so running on flat, wide-open spaces is easy. The obstacle course at the
MS Rush Adventure Challenge included easy challenges such as tapping football tackle dummies as you ran by and a team set of jumping jacks. At the mud bucket station, each member of our team had to carry a pail of mud up a hill for 50m and back down. I've participated in several adventure races prior to the MS Rush Adventure Challenge and I can personally say I hate tractor tires. They're big and heavy and they serve no purpose unless they're on an actual tractor. Have you ever tried flipping a tractor tire? If you have, you may understand why I despise them. Yes, flipping tractor tires through mud was one obstacle that basically sucked all my energy
and I was only halfway through the course. After the tires, it was a zig-zag sprint to the top of the toboggan hill to what was billed as the "Mystery Obstacle" prior to the start of the race. As we approached the top, a short line of racers were diving on all fours as they prepared to crawl through a 15 foot long pool of mud. If you weren't dirty by this stage of the race, this would be the station that primed you up for a dirty picture at the finish line! Getting down was a lot easier and definitely more fun. Along the backside of the hill and the only way to get down was a 6' wide make shift slip & slide where everyone ended up in small pool of mud. Wet and muddy, again. Followed by a short jog, with shoes carrying almost 5lbs of mud, our team made it to the final obstacle before the finish line. Each of us had to crawl through 20’ long plastic PVC tubes which were about 2' wide. Not surprisingly, crawling through the tubes was easy. What surprised me was the quick onset of claustrophobia. I made
July 20 - August 5, 2012
it out the other end with a smile on my face and covered in mud. Our team crossed the finished line and jumped straight into the wakeboard pool to clean off our mud laden bodies! What's next? It's the Dirty Donkey Mud Run at Spring Hill Winter Park on Saturday, August 18th. The Filipino Journal is excited to be involved with
the Swamp Donkey Adventure Racing. Whether you're flying solo or with a group of friends, the race is open to everyone! The Filipino Journal "Mud Hunters" are recruiting. For more information on joining the Filipino Journal "MUD HUNTERS" team, contact Ron Cantiveros by email at ron@FilipinoJournal.com.
