FIRST SHIFT, BIG DREAMS

Braving the Ice: Courage on Skates

Last week, QPAM launched its Winter 2025 Adult Learn-to-Skate program, kicking off another exciting season at Seven Oaks Arena. With a full class and a growing waitlist, the program is proof that it’s never too late to step out of your comfort zone and try something new – even if it’s on ice!

For many participants, learning to skate isn’t just about finding balance or figuring out how to stop (without falling!). It’s about embracing courage – the courage to waver, wobble, and occasionally take a tumble, all in the name of learning. Skating as an adult can feel daunting, but this program proves that a little determination and a lot of laughs can go a long way.

“There’s something magical about seeing parents and adults who’ve never been on skates discover their first glide,” said Program Director Ron Cantiveros. “It’s a reminder that courage isn’t about being fearless – it’s about trying anyway.”

Whether it’s holding onto the boards for stability or cheering for each other’s progress, the rink is filled with the energy of people who refuse to let fear hold them back.

So, here’s a message to everyone thinking about lacing up skates for the first time: Be brave, be bold, and above all, enjoy the ride – even if it’s a bit wobbly!

A Letter to Our Beloved Community

Dear Friends,

For nearly four decades, the Filipino Journal has been a cornerstone of our community—a trusted source for sharing stories, celebrating successes, and preserving our rich cultural heritage. It has been one of the greatest privileges of my life to lead this publication, watching the Filipino community in Manitoba grow and thrive beyond anything we could have imagined when we published our first issue.

As our community continues to expand, so do the ways we connect. The Filipino Journal has always adapted to the needs of the times, and today, we find ourselves at an exciting crossroads. Our new focus on digital platforms allows us to reach even broader audiences—not just across Manitoba but far beyond. We are connecting with Filipinos who live, work, and dream in every corner of the province and beyond its borders.

This growing digital presence means that more voices, stories, and celebrations can be shared in real-time. It allows us to connect across generations, bridging gaps and creating opportunities for deeper engagement. The Filipino Journal will remain in print, but in limited quantities, as we focus on building a vibrant online community that reflects the dynamic, diverse, and thriving Filipino culture.

As I reflect on this incredible journey, I feel an overwhelming sense of pride. The Filipino Journal is not just a publication—it is a living testament to the strength and resilience of our community. Looking ahead, my hope is that we continue to grow together, celebrating our achievements and preserving our shared legacy for generations to come.

To our readers, advertisers, and supporters, thank you for standing with us every step of the way. Your support has made everything possible. And to the next generation of storytellers and leaders, I encourage you to take the stage. This is your moment to continue the work we started and shape the future of our community.

Maraming salamat po for being part of this incredible journey. Together, we will write the next chapter of the Filipino Journal—a chapter that reaches further, inspires more, and unites us all.

With heartfelt gratitude, Rod E. Cantiveros

Trump's Presidency: a series of controversies after for more than a week of office

Donald Trump's presidency has been marked by a flurry of executive orders and pronouncements that have caused concerns among the USA's international partners, particularly Canada and Mexico.

Human Rights Concerns

The deportation of millions of undocumented migrants seeking a new life in the United States has sparked significant concerns about human rights and international peace on migration. This move is part of Trump's broader immigration plan, which includes expediting the deportation of migrant gang members, smugglers, and other criminals.

Threats to InternationalTrade

In response to Trump's threats to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian and Mexican goods and products, both governments are preparing for retaliation. This could pave the way for a possible trade war between the three countries, ultimately affecting the economies of all parties involved,

Isolation: Ofting out from many international organizations

Trump's move to detach from the climate change accord signed in Paris by many countries who opposed the proliferation of the effect of Climate change. Getting out from the World Health Organization opens danger for cooperation in battling pandemics which are still the concerns of many countries for ultimate cure.

Societal cracks on sexual orientation and the rights for abortion

In Trump's declaration, there are only two sexes in the United States: male and female. With this declaration, many groups have been forming to protest the "lost" of their status and thereby subjected to many violations of human rights, affecting the inclusion of gays and lesbians from the orbit of human beings. Added to this is the removal of the rights of abortion, leading to some court actions in the coming days.

Disregard for Constitutional Limits

Trump's suggestion to change the USA Constitution to allow for a third term has sparked significant debate. The 22nd Amendment, ratified in 1951, explicitly states that "No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice."

Comparison to Dictator Ferdinand Marcos Trump's actions have drawn comparisons to those

Ferdinand

who attempted to become "President for Life" by violating the Philippine Constitution. Trump's disregard for constitutional limits and his repeated attempts to bypass Congress have raised concerns about his commitment to democratic norms.

So, Americans, Canadians, Mexicans, and the international bodies of governments brace for a rough ride with Trump's blind ambitions!

Parents Beam with Pride Over Heritage Night Experience

The Winnipeg Jets’ Filipino Heritage Night on January 11 was a night of pride and celebration for the Filipino Heritage Performing Arts Class, who took center stage to perform the Canadian National Anthem and deliver a spectacular cultural dance performance during the second intermission.

Founded in 2023, the Filipino Heritage Performing Arts Class is led by Mary Jane Napolitano, president of MAFTI, and Marilyn Malek, a teacher at Keewatin Prairie Community School. The group, made up of students from the Filipino Heritage AfterSchool Program, is dedicated to preserving and promoting Filipino culture through arts and performances.

For many families, the evening was unforgettable. “Parents called it a ‘3-in-1 experience,’” shared Malek. “It was their first time at a hockey game, a celebration of Filipino culture, and seeing their children shine on a big stage. Many parents rewatched their kids’ performances over and over, filled with pride and gratitude.”

Adding to the excitement was the cultural display booth, which showcased the students’ creative projects. “The booth was fantastic,” said Napolitano. “It highlighted our students’ appreciation for Filipino heritage, and Jets fans were curious to learn about our national symbols. It was a wonderful way to bring people together in pride.”

The Filipino Heritage Performing Arts Class has already built an impressive resume, performing at the Winnipeg Jets Fan Fest, the Manitoba Filipino Street Festival, the Red River Exhibition, and more. Their dedication to celebrating their roots and sharing Filipino culture made this historic night at Canada Life Centre truly special for performers, parents, and the wider community.

24 Filipinos Deported from US for Alleged Criminal Activities

MANILA, Philippines — Twentyfour Filipinos were deported from the United States due to alleged involvement in criminal activities, Philippine Ambassador to the US Jose Romualdez confirmed on Sunday, January 26.

Speaking in an interview with DZBB, Romualdez said the deportees were implicated in minor offenses. “They were involved in some criminal activity, though not very serious crimes. They have already been deported, around 24 of them,” he stated.

Romualdez noted that the US government is prioritizing deporting immigrants with criminal records. This aligns with US President Donald Trump’s intensified crackdown on illegal immigrants, which includes plans for mass deportations with military assistance.

According to 2022 data from the US Department of Homeland Security, there are approximately

350,000 undocumented Filipino immigrants in the United States, ranking the Philippines fifth among countries with the most illegal immigrants.

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) announced last November that it would assist over 300,000 undocumented Filipinos in the US who may face deportation.

Meanwhile, Romualdez downplayed concerns over the potential suspension of foreign aid to the Philippines, following a freeze order by the US State Department on January 25 to review foreign aid policies.

Despite the review, military financing for allies like Israel, Egypt, and the Philippines remains exempt, with the US pledging $500 million in military funding to the Philippines last July amid tensions in the West Philippine Sea.

US Aid Freeze Will Not Affect Philippine EDCA Sites

MANILA, Philippines — The United States' freeze on foreign assistance will not impact the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) sites in the Philippines, Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega clarified during a news forum in Quezon City on Friday.

De Vega explained that the US aid package to the Philippines does not include EDCA-related activities, which remain vital to the interests of both nations. “In one sentence, they know the importance of EDCA for both the interest of the US and the Philippines,” he stated.

The US State Department issued a “stop-work” order on all foreign assistance following President Donald Trump’s directive to review aid allocations for consistency with US foreign policy. While the freeze affects most countries, exemptions have been granted for military financing to Israel and Egypt.

The Department of Foreign

Affairs (DFA) assured that it is closely monitoring the situation to assess any potential effects on the Philippines. In a statement, the DFA emphasized its commitment to engaging with US counterparts to address concerns.

Meanwhile, progressive group Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) called for an independent foreign policy, arguing that reliance on US aid should not dictate the nation’s economic or security priorities.

Philippines, US Plan First MarcosTrump Meeting to Bolster Ties

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines and the United States are preparing for a potential meeting between President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and newly-elected US President Donald Trump, aimed at deepening economic cooperation and reinforcing regional security.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) announced Friday that Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio agreed to explore scheduling the first meeting between the two leaders during a phone call on January 23.

The discussion emphasized strengthening economic resilience and supply chain stability through enhanced cooperation. Both sides highlighted the significance of trilateral collaboration with Japan in ensuring regional security and attracting private investments.

The DFA noted ongoing efforts to

boost Philippine military modernization and address concerns over the South China Sea. Secretary Rubio reaffirmed the United States’ "ironclad commitments" to the Philippines under the mutual defense treaty and condemned China’s "dangerous and destabilizing actions" in the disputed waters.

Although no date has been set for the meeting, it would mark the first dialogue between Marcos and Trump since the latter’s return to office this month. The talks underscore shared priorities in securing economic and strategic partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region.

Located in La Rivière, Holiday Mountain is a smaller, more intimate option for those new to skiing and snowboarding. This resort has a welcoming environment with trained instructors ready to teach the basics in a safe, relaxed setting.

If you’re a parent who’s more comfortable on solid ground, the resort’s ziplining adventure adds a touch of thrill to your day while your kids take lessons. This makes it a great all-around destination for families wanting to explore winter sports together.

Springhill Winter Sports Park (IG: springhillwinterpark)

Only 15 minutes from Winnipeg, Springhill Winter Sports Park is an excellent option for those wanting to stay close to home. With lessons available for all ages and Manitoba’s only half-pipe for the more adventurous, Springhill offers something for everyone.

Filipino families can enjoy the park’s learning areas, which cater specifically to beginners. The close proximity to the city makes it convenient for weekend outings or quick day trips.

Why Try Skiing or Snowboarding?

For many in the Filipino community, embracing winter activities may be a unique experience, especially if you’ve recently moved to Canada. Here’s why it’s worth considering:

Building Community: Whether it’s a family outing or a group of friends, skiing and snowboarding offer a great way to strengthen connections and meet others in the community. Many resorts host events and gatherings, making it easy to socialize.

Staying Active: Skiing and snowboarding aren’t just fun— they’re also fantastic forms of exercise. They’ll keep you warm, fit, and energized even in the coldest months.

Creating Memories: From your first wobbly steps on skis to gliding down the slopes with ease, learning a new skill is an unforgettable experience. It’s also a great way to create lasting winter memories with loved ones.

Tips for Beginners

Dress Warmly: Layers are

key! Invest in proper winter gear, including waterproof jackets, gloves, and snow pants. Many resorts offer rentals if you’re just trying it out for the first time.

Start Small: Choose beginnerfriendly slopes and take advantage of lessons. Resorts like Asessippi and Springhill have dedicated areas for first-timers.

Bring the Family: Skiing and snowboarding can be fun for all ages. Kids can pick up the basics quickly, and there are often group lessons that allow families to learn together.

Pack a Filipino Winter Snack: Bring a thermos of warm arroz caldo or champorado to enjoy after your

lesson—it’s a comforting taste of home that pairs perfectly with the chilly weather.

Creating a Winter Tradition Manitoba’s ski resorts are ready to welcome the Filipino community with open arms. Whether you’re a first-timer or just looking for a fun family activity, there’s no better way to embrace the season. With lessons, rentals, and stunning snowy landscapes, skiing and snowboarding could become a new winter tradition for your family.

So, this winter, gather your “barkada” and give skiing or snowboarding a try. The slopes are calling—are you ready to answer?

The Filipino Heritage Performing Arts Class delivered a powerful rendition of the Canadian anthem, while Filipino Canadian artist Jovelle Balani gave a heartfelt performance of the American anthem. The evening also showcased the creative work of Sisler High School’s CREATE program, with stunning digital media elements that brought the Filipino culture to life on the big screens.

In a heartwarming moment during the first intermission, Filipino youth from the First Shift program proudly showcased their hockey skills. The program, designed to make hockey more accessible and inclusive, continues to open doors for young players new to the sport, including many from newcomer families.

Big Smiles from Young Hockey Stars at First Shift Exhibition Skate

During the Winnipeg Jets’ Filipino Heritage Night on January 11, fans were treated to an unforgettable moment as 20 young players from the Fall 2024 First Shift session took to the ice for a four-minute exhibition skate. Supported by three U9 junior coaches (Braylen Pragides, Alexandra Puache and Lorenzo Cantiveros) and parent coaches

- Bryan Pragides, Mark Galang

and Ron Cantiveros, the players showcased their newfound skills, earning cheers and applause from the crowd at Canada Life Centre.

The First Shift program, designed to break barriers and introduce hockey to families new to the sport, has been instrumental in fostering a love for the game among Winnipeg’s growing Filipino community. By providing affordable and inclusive opportunities, the

program gives young players the tools and confidence to enjoy hockey, many for the first time.

For the young athletes, stepping onto the same ice as their hockey heroes was a dream come true. Their dedication, guided by the junior coaches, shone brightly during the exhibition skate. The junior coaches, all graduates of Jets Hockey Development camps, played a key role in mentoring

and inspiring the next generation of players.

“This was such an incredible experience for the kids,” shared one proud parent. “Seeing them skate in front of a packed arena, you could feel the excitement and pride radiating from every single one of them.”

The exhibition skate was more than just a showcase of skill—it was a celebration of community,

opportunity, and the joy of hockey.

As the young players waved to the crowd and left the ice with beaming smiles, it was clear that the First Shift program is making a lasting impact, one skate at a time.

Ultimate New Wave Evolution

(& closely related styles) part 77

As the 1990s approached, lots of bands that have acknowledged New Wave and Punk as among their influences began pursuing a rather more Rock-oriented direction and started dominating the scene. They were the abrasive ones--genrified by most as Alternative Rock. But despite the notably edgier and rawer characteristics of their sound and style, the so-called New Wave DNA still flowed in the melodic veins and lyrical sentiments of these artists.

Many listeners--influenced by commercial media--no longer recognize such bands as New Wave. However, to the keen-eared academic, all those are still parts of the entire New Wave music evolution.

Sa Úgoy ng Músika

This set consists of albums that have been generally associated with Alternative Rock but whose musicality still carried the undeniable Post-Punk / New Wave sensibility.

How to Introduce Your Kids to Winter Sports in Winnipeg

Winnipeg winters can be long and cold, but they also offer the perfect opportunity to introduce your kids to winter sports that can keep them active and entertained. Whether it’s gliding on the ice, scoring goals, or trekking through snowy trails, here’s how to get your little ones started with beginner-friendly winter sports like ice skating, hockey, and snowshoeing.

Start With Ice Skating

Ice skating is the gateway to many winter sports, and Winnipeg boasts several free or low-cost outdoor rinks for families to explore.

● Where to Go: Check out The Forks skating trails, the Assiniboine Park Duck Pond, or local community club rinks.

● Affordable Gear: Look for gently used skates at second-hand stores or online marketplaces. Many community programs also offer skate rentals or swaps.

● Lessons: Consider enrolling your child in beginner skating lessons through organizations like the Winnipeg Community Centres or CanSkate programs, which focus on building confidence and balance on the ice.

Explore Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing is a simple and affordable way to enjoy Winnipeg’s winter wonderland with your kids. It’s also a great low-impact sport that’s easy for little ones to pick up.

● Where to Try It: Trails at FortWhyte Alive or Birds Hill Provincial Park are beginner-friendly and offer stunning winter landscapes.

● Gear Options: Many parks, including FortWhyte Alive, rent snowshoes, so you don’t need to buy them upfront. Look for child-sized snowshoes at outdoor retailers if your family wants to invest.

● Make it Fun: Turn your snowshoe outings into treasure hunts or nature walks to keep kids engaged.

Tips for Success

● Dress Warmly: Layer your kids with waterproof outerwear, thermal base layers, and insulated gloves. Don’t forget warm socks!

● Start Slow: Let your kids explore at their own pace to build confidence and prevent frustration.

● Keep It Fun: Focus on the experience rather than the skill. Bring hot chocolate and snacks to celebrate small victories.

● Community Resources: Many community centres and non-profits offer free or subsidized lessons and gear for families who want to try winter sports.

Winter sports not only keep your kids active but also teach them resilience, teamwork, and the joys of embracing Winnipeg’s frosty outdoors. Start small, stay patient, and soon enough, your kids might just look forward to winter every year!
