Unlocking Growth: Manitoba Entrepreneurs

Reap Benefits from Innovation Growth Program

The Manitoba government is supporting 12 local companies through the Innovation Growth Program (IGP) to boost product innovation, business growth, and expansion, as announced by Economic Development, Investment, Trade and Natural Resources Minister Jamie Moses.

“Manitoba has many small- and medium-sized businesses doing great things, and I’m pleased our government can provide support to make more innovation happen,” said Moses. “This support has a ripple effect on our economy – business expansion and innovation will create more jobs for Manitobans

and contribute to the growth of our economy.”

The IGP provides cost-shared grants of up to $100,000 to eligible small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across the province. This funding helps businesses accelerate the commercialization of innovative products and processes, ultimately

leading to faster growth. Entrepreneurs who have benefitted from the program, such as Johanna Wood, president and CEO of Spark E Safety, emphasize the game-changing impact of this funding. “I am incredibly grateful for the support we've received through the Innovation Growth

Program and the opportunities this unlocks for our company,” said Wood. “This funding will enable us to expand our operations, accelerate the development of innovative safety garments, and create much-needed jobs in our community.”

Collectively, these companies expect to add 426 new full-time jobs to Manitoba and generate $291.2 million in export sales within five years. This aligns with the government’s commitment to grow the provincial economy and create more high-quality jobs for Manitobans.

The IGP operates on a competitive application process, ensuring that Manitoba’s most promising businesses receive the support they need to scale and innovate. Whether you're an entrepreneur in tech, manufacturing, or services, the IGP offers a vital opportunity to bring your ideas to market, expand operations, and make a global impact.

Applications for the current intake of the Innovation Growth Program are open until December 15.

10 Fun and Easy Steps for Planning the Perfect Baby Shower

Planning a baby shower can be a lot of fun, but it can also feel overwhelming if you don’t know where to start. Don’t worry! With these 10 easy steps, you’ll have everything you need to throw a memorable and joyous celebration. Whether you're the mom-to-be, a friend, or family member, here's how to plan a baby shower everyone will enjoy!

1. Set a Date The first thing to do is pick a date. Most baby showers happen during the last trimester, but be sure to check with the mom-to-be to avoid any scheduling conflicts. Remember, you'll need enough time to plan, so aim for a date at least four to six weeks out.

2. Choose a Theme Themes add a personal touch and set the vibe for the party. Whether it’s a classic “It’s a Boy/Girl” theme, a gender-neutral safari, or something unique like “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star,” the possibilities are endless. Let the mom-to-be’s style or the baby’s nursery colors inspire you!

3. Create the Guest List Next, it’s time to decide who’s coming. Coordinate with the guest of honor to make sure all her closest friends, family, and coworkers are included. Once the list is set, send out invitations! You can go old school with printed invites or save time with digital ones.

4. Pick a Venue Baby showers can happen anywhere – at home, in a park, or even at a cozy café. If you're going for an intimate gathering, a living room is perfect. If the guest list is larger, consider renting a small event space. Just be sure it’s a spot where everyone can feel comfortable.

5. Plan the Menu The key to a great baby shower is delicious food. Think light and

easy-to-eat options like finger sandwiches, veggie trays, and cupcakes. If the mom-tobe has cravings, surprise her by including some of her favorite snacks! And don’t forget mocktails for a fun, festive touch.

6. Get Creative with Games What’s a baby shower without games? Classics like “Guess the Baby’s Due Date” and “Baby Bingo” never fail to entertain. For something new, try the “Diaper Changing Challenge” (on dolls, of course) or a DIY baby bib station where guests can get crafty.

7. Decorate Like a Pro You don’t need to be a Pinterest queen to decorate! Start with a simple color scheme and build from there. Balloons, banners, and themed tableware can go a long way. Bonus points if you add personal touches like framed baby pictures of the mom-to-be!

8. Make a Gift Registry Help your guests out by making sure the mom-to-be has a gift registry set up. This way, everyone can pick something they know she needs. Whether it’s baby clothes, nursery essentials, or those adorable tiny shoes, the registry helps keep things organized.

9. Don't Forget Favors Say thank you to your guests with small party favors. Cute candles, mini succulents, or personalized treats are great ways to show appreciation. A favor doesn’t have to be extravagant, just a small token of thanks for celebrating the special day.

10. Capture the Memories Hire a photographer or ask a friend to take photos throughout the shower. From the laughter during games to the joy of opening gifts, these moments are worth capturing. You can even create a small photo album or slideshow for the mom-to-be to treasure forever.

PNP Reopens Probe into 2018 Killing of Tanauan Mayor Antonio Halili

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has decided to reopen the investigation into the 2018 assassination of Tanauan City Mayor Antonio Halili, following claims that a police official may have been involved in the killing.

PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo announced that the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) is reassessing the case. "The CIDG is in the process of retrieving and reviewing the investigation," she stated during a press briefing.

Halili, who gained notoriety for parading drug suspects in public, was shot during a flag-raising ceremony in Tanauan City.

Retired Police Col. Royina Garma, who was Cebu City police chief at the time of the murder, recently alleged that a police sniper was involved, naming a certain Major Albotra from Region 7. Garma also mentioned that former President Rodrigo Duterte rewarded officers for drug-related operations under the “Davao model.”

In a related development, the PNP is preparing criminal charges against Garma and former National Police Commission official Edilberto Leonardo in connection with the 2020 murder of PCSO board secretary Wesley Barayuga.

Senators have expressed interest in conducting a parallel investigation into Duterte's drug war practices.

Escudero Advises Dela Rosa Not to Lead Drug War Probe

Senate President Francis "Chiz" Escudero advised Senator Ronald "Bato" dela Rosa not to lead any investigation into the Duterte administration’s controversial war on drugs. Escudero shared this during an interview in Sorsogon City on Thursday, emphasizing the need for impartiality.

Escudero mentioned that while he supports an inquiry into the drug campaign, it would be better for Dela Rosa, a key figure in the anti-narcotics campaign, and Senator Bong Go, a close ally of former President Duterte, to refrain from leading the investigation. "This would avoid any allegations of personal bias and ensure a fair and impartial process," Escudero stated.

The suggestion comes after Senate Deputy Minority Leader Risa Hontiveros proposed convening the Senate Committee of the Whole to investigate the drug war. If formed, Escudero, as Senate president, would preside over the committee.

Dela Rosa previously expressed his intention to initiate an investigation, with former President Duterte as a key resource person. Meanwhile, Go signaled his willingness to file a resolution for a Senate inquiry, parallel to ongoing discussions in the House Quad Committee.

The proposed investigation aims to revisit the violent anti-drug campaign that drew international criticism during Duterte's presidency.

Ginger Prices Surge to P350 per Kilo Amid Hoarding Concerns

Tthe Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura (SINAG) to urge the Department of Agriculture (DA) to inspect cold storage facilities for possible hoarding. SINAG Chairman Rosendo So suggested that hoarding may contribute to the price hike despite the importation of ginger.

Agriculture Assistant Secretary Arnel de Mesa confirmed the arrival of 4,248 metric tons of imported ginger, primarily from China, representing 30% of the expected volume. He stated that the recent typhoons had affected ginger production areas like Calabarzon and

that local ginger production is expected to stabilize by November or December.

The DA’s monitoring showed ginger prices in Metro Manila markets ranging from P220 to P350 per kilo.

In a separate issue, SINAG has also petitioned the Supreme Court to halt Executive Order 62, which lowered tariffs on imported rice. They claim that the measure has resulted in P6.2 billion in lost revenue while failing to reduce rice prices significantly.

Winnipeg Jets Open 2024-25 Season with Unbeaten Streak

The Winnipeg Jets have stormed into the 2024-25 season with a perfect 3-0-0 record, marking the first time in franchise history they’ve begun a campaign with three consecutive wins. Under new head coach Scott Arniel, the team has secured dominant victories, including a 6-0 shutout against the Edmonton Oilers, followed by two tight 2-1 overtime wins against the Chicago Blackhawks and Minnesota Wild.

Scheifele’s Scorching Start

Mark Scheifele is leading the charge for the Jets, with six points in three games. The veteran center has played a part in all of the team’s last six goals, netting four of them and assisting on two, including the game-winner against the Wild. Scheifele’s season is off to a historic start, reaching his 300th career goal in his 800th NHL game. His contributions have been pivotal, and though his pace is unsustainable, his early performance sets the tone for another stellar season.

Special Teams Impact A major focus for Arniel has been improving the Jets’ special teams, and early signs are promising. The power play, which struggled last season, has been highly effective, scoring three goals in seven opportunities, with a success rate of 42.85%.

Gabriel Vilardi, Kyle Connor, and Scheifele have all contributed to the team’s man-advantage success. Meanwhile, the penalty kill, which ranked 21st last season, has been flawless, successfully stopping all five opposing power plays. The unit’s newfound aggression has been key, highlighted by a critical late-game kill against the Wild that preserved a tie and led to an overtime victory.

paired with stellar goaltending from Connor Hellebuyck, has allowed just two goals through three games. Hellebuyck, fresh off his Vezina Trophy win, boasts a remarkable .976 save percentage, having made 83 saves. The defense has done a commendable job neutralizing opponents’ top players, including limiting Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl to just three shots combined in their season opener.

A SPECTACULAR SKY SHOW: Northern Lights Dazzle Manitoba

Over the past few days, Manitoba residents have been treated to an awe-inspiring display of the northern lights, or aurora borealis, lighting up the skies in vibrant colors. These breathtaking celestial shows have been visible from multiple locations across the province, including Winnipeg, creating excitement among sky-watchers.

The northern lights have been

especially bright this season, with Morden photographer Aldrick Pagulayan Lagmay capturing stunning images of the phenomenon. The intensity of the lights has allowed for incredible visibility, even in areas not typically known for frequent aurora sightings.

The increased frequency of the northern lights is tied to heightened solar activity. The sun has been releasing more solar flares recently,

and with the fall equinox creating a special alignment between the Earth's magnetic field and the sun's, the conditions have been ideal for aurora displays.

Why the Lights Are So Vibrant

The stunning red and green hues of the northern lights are caused by the interaction between solar particles and gases in our atmosphere. When

electrons from the sun collide with nitrogen and oxygen, they produce energy that is released as light. The red color comes primarily from nitrogen, while oxygen is responsible for the familiar green glow. These vibrant colors, combined with the movement of the aurora across the sky, create a magical visual experience.

Where and When to Watch

For those eager to witness the northern lights, there may still be a few more opportunities this week. The best time to view the lights is around midnight, and the ideal locations are areas with minimal light pollution. Popular spots like Birds Hill Provincial Park offer the perfect environment for aurora watching. So, if you haven’t caught the show yet, there’s still hope for a dazzling night sky experience.

Whether you're an experienced sky-watcher or just looking for a special moment outdoors, the aurora borealis is a reminder of the beauty and mystery of our natural world.

First Shift Program Introduces Hockey to New Communities in Winnipeg

In early October, the Winnipeg Jets and the Hockey Canada First Shift program teamed up to introduce 90 kids to the exciting world of hockey. This program, designed to make the sport accessible and fun for families unfamiliar with the game, is being run out of Seven Oaks Arena. It’s part of the Jets’ ongoing effort to reach out to South Asian and Filipino communities in Winnipeg, using cultural heritage night games to engage and welcome diverse backgrounds to Canada’s favorite sport.

The First Shift program focuses on introducing children aged 6-10 to hockey in a non-intimidating environment. Each child receives a full set of hockey equipment for a reasonable registration fee, including skates, helmet, and pads. The program offers six onice sessions where kids can learn the basic skills of the game with the guidance of trained coaches. What sets First Shift apart is its emphasis on making hockey a fun experience—teaching children at their own pace while prioritizing safety

and enjoyment over competition. This year’s cohort at Seven Oaks Arena has already seen tremendous excitement from both kids and parents. Many of the participating families are new to hockey and are discovering not just the sport but also the community that surrounds it. By lowering the barriers to entry, First Shift allows children who might not otherwise have had the chance to try hockey to do so, creating a ripple effect of inclusivity and diversity that benefits everyone.

Layering 101: Keep Your Kids Cozy This Fall

As the cooler weather rolls in, it’s time to make sure your kids stay warm without overheating.

The trick? Mastering the art of layering. With just a few simple tips, you can keep your little ones comfortable, no matter how unpredictable the fall weather can be.

Start with the Base Layer

The base layer is like a second skin. Think of lightweight longsleeve shirts made from materials like polyester or merino wool. These fabrics help keep sweat away and maintain warmth, making them perfect for active kids who love running around.

Next, Add an Insulating Layer

The second layer is where the warmth really comes in. Choose

from page 10

a cozy fleece or a light wool sweater that’s soft and comfy. This layer traps your child’s body heat, keeping them warm during chilly mornings or evenings.

Top it Off with an Outer Layer

The outer layer is all about protection. A windproof, waterresistant jacket is essential to shield them from rain and cold winds. Bonus points if it’s breathable and has a removable liner so you can adjust it for different temperatures!

Don’t Forget the Accessories

Keep their head, hands, and neck warm with soft hats, gloves, and scarves. Look for wool or fleece options that are lightweight but toasty. And don’t skip gloves –cold fingers can make outdoor fun miserable!

Layer Those Feet

Moisture-wicking socks and sturdy, waterproof boots are a must. Wool socks are great for warmth, and boots that can handle both wet leaves and chilly sidewalks will keep their feet dry and comfy.

Make Layers School-Friendly

Make sure your child’s layers are easy to put on or take off as needed. Zippered jackets, easy-to-remove hoodies, and lighter sweaters will help them adjust when they’re moving between chilly outdoor playtime and warm classrooms.

With these simple layering tips, your kids will be ready to tackle the cooler weather while staying cozy and comfortable. Plus, layering makes it easy for them to adjust throughout the day – ensuring they’re dressed for success, no matter what the weather brings!

One of the standout aspects of this year’s program is the incredible support from volunteer coaches from Winnipeg’s Emperors (Allan Chan and Ron Cantiveros) and Coffey's (Ganni Maan) hockey teams. Their involvement has been instrumental in making the program a success. These volunteer coaches bring both expertise and passion to the ice, dedicating their time and energy to ensure the kids get the most out of each session.

Programs like First Shift play a crucial role in growing the sport by making

it more accessible to all communities. With the backing of organizations like the Winnipeg Jets, as well as dedicated volunteers, hockey is expanding beyond its traditional boundaries. As more children from diverse backgrounds lace up their skates for the first time, the future of the game looks brighter and more inclusive.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to all the volunteer coaches from the Winnipeg Emperors and Coffey's hockey teams, who have been the backbone of this season’s First Shift program.

Ultimate New Wave Evolution

(& closely related styles) part 71

The popular narrative about New Wave is that it was derived from '70s Punk.

True, partially; because only Post-Punk transitioned directly from Punk. And New Wave has lots of subgenres and close kins other than Post-Punk--like Synthpop, Jangle Pop, Twee Pop, and Indie Rock--which are rooted in other styles of music older than Punk, such as '60s Sunshine Pop, Folk Rock, Psychedelic Rock, to name a few.

* The Clash - The Clash (1977)

* The Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's The Sex Pistols (1977)

* Cockney Rejects - Greatest Hits vol. II (1980)

With this set, however, I am recognizing Punk as a pivotal part of the entire New Wave evolution. Here are some of my personal favorites.

* Dead Kennedys - Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables (1980)

* Anti-Nowhere League - We Are... The League (1982)

* The Toy Dolls - Dig That Groove, Baby (1983)

* Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes (1983)

Marian Rivera Shines in Election-Themed Film 'Balota'

Marian Rivera's latest film, Balota, has made a strong impact as it tackles the gritty realities of Philippine elections. Directed by Kip Oebanda, the film portrays Rivera as Teacher Emmy, a schoolteacher caught in a chaotic election process in a fictional town notorious for political violence. The film is set in 2007, during the era of manual vote counting, where teachers served as election officers.

Rivera’s performance earned her the Cinemalaya Best Actress award, marking a significant milestone in her career. Balota critiques the country's election system, highlighting how political figures often turn elections into a spectacle, overshadowing the real purpose of electing genuine public servants.

The film also features strong supporting performances, with Gardo Versoza and Mae Paner playing rival politicians, each backed by local influencers portrayed by online personalities Esnyr and Sassa Gurl.

With its raw dialogue and sharp commentary, Balota delivers thoughtprovoking messages about corruption and the political landscape. Oebanda crafted a film that resonates with the masses, using humor and relatable characters to convey its powerful critique of the electoral process.

Balota is set to leave a lasting mark in Philippine cinema, especially with Rivera's standout performance.

Cristy Fermin Loses Libel Case to Sharon Cuneta, Kiko Pangilinan

Veteran showbiz host and columnist Cristy Fermin has lost a libel case filed by celebrity couple Sharon Cuneta and former senator Francis "Kiko" Pangilinan. In her online show "Cristy Ferminute" on October 17, Fermin revealed she received a letter confirming the court's decision against her in five counts of libel.

Fermin expressed disappointment, noting that the cost of her bail had significantly increased. "I lost five counts of libel, and inflation is real. Years ago, I only paid P10,000 for one libel case, but now it's P48,000 per count," she shared.

Despite the emotional toll, Fermin acknowledged the support of her followers and said the battle was far from over. She explained that the case would now proceed to the Regional Trial Court in Makati, with the possibility of escalating to the Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court if necessary.

In a separate development, Fermin recently won the dismissal of four cases filed against her by actress Sarah Lahbati's parents, which included charges of cyberlibel, harassment, and defamation.

Fermin thanked her supporters, saying, "This is just the first step. We’ll continue to fight."

Walking Off Thanksgiving Calories in Birds Hill Provincial Park

After a weekend packed with family celebrations and way too much food, we all felt the need to get outside and walk off those Thanksgiving calories. On Monday morning, we decided there was no better place for that than Birds Hill Provincial Park.

It was a cooler day than we expected, even with the sun shining brightly, but that didn’t stop us. We bundled up, hopped in the car, and made our way to the park. As we drove in, the fall colors were absolutely stunning—yellow, orange, and red leaves mixed beautifully with the evergreens. It felt like the perfect fall postcard come to life.

The park was buzzing with people who, like us, seemed to have the same idea. We saw plenty of dog

walkers and families strolling along the trails, taking in the scenery and maybe burning off a few holiday meals of their own. We parked near one of the popular walking spots, surrounded by a vibrant canopy of autumn leaves, and set off on our walk.

The cool, crisp air was refreshing after all that time indoors, and the peaceful atmosphere of the park helped us recharge. As we strolled along, taking in the beautiful fall

landscape, we couldn’t help but feel grateful—not just for the family celebrations but for moments like these, where we could slow down and enjoy the simple beauty of nature together.

Birds Hill really delivered the perfect post-Thanksgiving escape—a place to walk off the turkey and pie, reconnect with the outdoors, and just breathe in the crisp fall air.

How to Get to Birds Hill Provincial Park

If you’re looking to enjoy your own post-Thanksgiving walk or fall family photos at Birds Hill Provincial Park, getting there is easy. From Winnipeg, head north on Highway 59. After about 20 kilometers, you’ll see the signs for the park’s entrance. Once inside, you can follow the well-marked roads to explore the various trails, campsites, and scenic spots that the park has to offer. It’s a quick and beautiful escape, just a short drive from the city, making it the perfect destination for a fall day trip with the family.

Dr. Gianna addressed the attendees, sharing heartfelt reflections on her mother's life and legacy.

The celebrations continued into Sunday with the 11:00 a.m. Eucharistic Liturgy, where Dr. Gianna further shared her testimony of faith, reflecting on the lives of her Holy parents. The liturgy was followed by a light reception, providing an opportunity for parishioners and guests to gather in fellowship and commemorate two decades of spiritual growth and community building.

The weekend was a testament

to the dedication and contributions of many within the parish. Special recognition was given to the 20th Anniversary Organizing Committee, parish staff, Knights of Columbus, and the various ministries that played an integral role in the event’s success. Silent auction donors and numerous volunteers were also thanked for their efforts in ensuring the celebrations were memorable.

Dr. Gianna’s visit, along with her travel companions, Fr. Joseph,

Mary Pat, and her daughter Aubrey, was a significant moment for the parish, bringing a personal connection to the parish’s namesake. The Gala was further honored by the presence of Most Reverend Richard Gagnon, Archbishop of Winnipeg, who led grace and shared his ongoing support for the parish.

The parish’s beloved pastor, Fr. Darrin Gurr, was recognized for his two decades of leadership, vision, and unwavering faith since

the parish’s founding in 2004. His passion and commitment have helped shape St. Gianna’s into the vibrant community it is today.

As the celebrations concluded, the parish extended its gratitude to all who made the anniversary a success. The theme 'Being a Part of Something Great!' resonated with parishioners and guests alike, capturing the spirit of unity and shared faith that has defined St. Gianna's for the past 20 years.
