Three Organizations Launch an Environmental Sustainability Workshop
By Ramon Sales*
Three Winnipeg-based organizations, Caring for our Environment – Manitoba (CEM), Manitoba Filipino Business Council, and Prairie Circular Economy, came together to co-host a Strategic Planning Workshop. The workshop titled “Empowering Change: Strengthening our Community through Sustainability, was held last October 26, 2024 at the Sir William Stephenson Library, Winnipeg. This workshop was a core activity under the CEM’s Strategic Planning Project, which was made possible through a grant from the Assiniboine Credit Union.
This workshop aimed to foster community and business awareness and action toward achieving a greener, healthier and safer Manitoba. The workshop brought together twentyfour (24) members of the Filipino community, partner organizations, community leaders, small business owners, youths, and seniors in Manitoba.
The workshop kicked off with an inspiring message from Jackie Wild, President of Manitoba Filipino Business Council (MFBC). She highlighted the importance of building a future that supports youth, our children, and the generations to come who will have the resources they need to thrive, succeed, and carry forward a healthy, vibrant community. She added that “taking action, no matter how small, brings us closer to a sustainable future.” Jackie put forward the idea that “circular economy is not just a concept but a mindset. It is about finding
ways to reduce waste, rethinking how we consume resources and creating systems that can support our futures in the long term.”
CEM Chairperson, Ramon Sales, provided an overview of the workshop agenda, objectives and the planned interactive activities for the attendees.
One of the highlights of the workshop was the presentation of Curt Hull, Project Director of the Climate Change Connection, on the report titled “Manitoba's Road to Resilience: A Community Climate Action Pathway to a Fossil Fuel Free Future" developed by the Manitoba Climate Action Team. He outlined a vision for a fossil fuel-free future for the province that has fewer cars, better public transit, more efficient buildings and more locally-grown food.
Meghan Ostrum, owner and consultant of the Prairie Circular Economy, delivered an engaging presentation on circular economywhat it is all about and how it is
different from the existing linear and recycling economy approaches. She clarified that linear economy is based on the "take, make, use, dispose" model, where resources are extracted, used to create products, and then discarded. The circular economy, on the other hand, is based on the principles of "reduce, reuse, recycle," where the focus is on minimizing waste and maximizing the use of resources. She concluded by encouraging the participants to take small steps and lead by example.
Through facilitated breakout discussions, the participants shared their experiences and insights about their community needs, challenges and opportunities as well as their concept of a shared vision. The workshop concluded with a pledge of commitment, where participants identified actions that they would start, stop and continue doing in their daily lives to support environmental sustainability.
CEM would like to thank
all workshop participants, emcee and facilitators, including Karla Atanacio (MFBC Director), Ann Evangelista and Dennis Gupa (both CEM officers), as well as its partner organizations, the Manitoba Filipino Business Council and Prairie Circular Economy and the Assiniboine Credit Union, for making this event a success. CEM plans to host similar workshops in
the future, continuing its mission to educate and empower the community.

Discover Code Ninja's Camps: Where Kids Learn, Play, and Create!
Looking for a way to keep your kids engaged, entertained, and learning new skills? Code Ninja offers the perfect blend of fun and educational programming, allowing kids to dive into the worlds of coding, gaming, and creativity. With exciting options like Roblox World Creator Camp and Parents Night Out, Code Ninja has created a space where children are not only entertained but also empowered to become creators in their favorite games.
Roblox World Creator Camp: Transforming Gamers into Creators
In the Roblox World Creator Camp, young "ninjas" get a behindthe-scenes look at game development, learning how to bring their own ideas to life in the popular platform Roblox. Instead of just playing games, campers learn to build their own worlds using Roblox's creation tools. They gain hands-on experience with skills like designing terrain, creating animations, adding sound effects, and basic scripting. For many kids, it’s their first introduction to coding and game development, and it’s a gateway to discovering new interests.
One recent participant described his experience trying to recreate a version of Brookhaven, a popular Roblox game. “I tried my best to make a recreation of Brookhaven,” he shared. “It was a little boring at first, but as I went on, I got better.” By the end of the program, he had transformed his initial concept into something he felt proud of, illustrating just how much progress kids can make in a short time.
The Roblox World Creator experience isn’t only about coding— Code Ninja ensures each day includes plenty of variety to keep kids engaged. Participants enjoy breaks for playtime, lunch, and snacks, giving them a chance to unwind and socialize. In one activity, they even spin a theme wheel to inspire their projects. “We spun a wheel, and it landed on ‘Zombie Obby,’” said one young coder, referring to a theme that involved creating a unique zombie-themed obstacle course (or "obby"). He described the challenge with excitement, saying, “We had to make an obby that only goes up—it was so cool!”
Code Ninja provides a friendly, supportive environment where kids feel free to try new things, make mistakes, and learn from them. Working alongside friends or new acquaintances, they learn collaboration and build confidence. Watching each other present their final games is another favorite part of the program. “They were showing off their games. It was really cool!” he added. Kids leave the Roblox World Creator Camp with more than just new skills—they gain a sense of pride in what they’ve

As one participant described, “It was a fun night with my friends!” With plenty of opportunities for socializing, it’s the ideal place for kids to enjoy a
night out of their own while parents get a well-deserved break.
Parents Night Out is open to all, whether they’re Code Ninja members or first-timers. With limited spots available, it’s a wonderful chance for non-members to get a taste of the Code Ninja experience without a long-term commitment. Anthony Jennings Faces Allegations of Infidelity from Ex-Girlfriend
MANILA, Philippines — Actor Anthony Jennings is at the center of controversy after his ex-girlfriend, Jamela Villanueva, accused him of infidelity with his onscreen partner, Maris Racal.
In a series of Instagram stories, Jamela claimed Maris was the reason behind their breakup, sharing screenshots of alleged late-night, flirtatious conversations between Anthony and Maris. She also disclosed that Anthony admitted to an intimate encounter with Maris, allegedly downplaying it due to their professional obligations.
Jamela revealed that her seven-yearlong relationship with Anthony had been strained since June but that they had tried to work through their issues. She initially supported Anthony and Maris' partnership in their hit show Can't Buy Me Love but expressed feeling betrayed.
“When Maris came into the picture, I was genuinely happy for you both… But betrayal like this cuts deep,” she wrote.
Jamela’s allegations included photos of Anthony and Maris allegedly kissing, which she said were dismissed by Anthony as "nothing." She admitted sharing cryptic TikTok posts about cheating as a way to process her pain, though Anthony reportedly asked her to stop.
Ending her statements, Jamela urged other women not to ignore red flags in their relationships, reflecting on the emotional toll of the experience.
Neither Anthony nor Maris has publicly addressed the accusations. The controversy comes after Maris announced her breakup with Rico Blanco earlier this year.
Piolo Pascual Lauds Vic Sotto's Work Ethic and Talent in The Kingdom
MANILA, Philippines — Piolo Pascual admired veteran comedian and actor Vic Sotto as they worked together for the first time on the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) 2024 entry, The Kingdom
During the film’s press conference on November 29 at Novotel Manila, Piolo shared his awe and respect for Vic, describing the opportunity as a dream come true. “I’ve always been a fan. Seeing him on set felt surreal. Acting alongside an icon like Vic Sotto is a privilege,” he said.
Piolo highlighted Vic's dedication to his craft, noting his professionalism and humility. “He doesn’t joke around on set; he asks questions like a newcomer. His love for acting is evident, and that’s why he has my utmost respect,” Piolo remarked.
In The Kingdom, Vic plays Lakan Makisig, the King of Kalayaan, a role that Piolo said was performed with depth and commitment. “He didn’t break character once. Watching him work
was inspiring,” Piolo added.
When asked about Vic’s potential as a Best Actor contender, Piolo confidently replied, “Absolutely.” However, he expressed that the film’s success at the box office mattered most. “Before awards, I want people to watch the film. It’s something we all worked hard on.”

“We appreciate the court’s decision, which underscores Neri's constitutional right to due process. The reinvestigation will allow her to address the claims against her,” said her lawyer, Aureli Sinsuat.
The Pasay City court ruled that the subpoena issued to Naig-Miranda had been sent to the wrong address, violating her right to due process and invalidating the prosecutor’s office's initial investigation. However, the court denied her motion to dismiss the case, allowing the information to remain on record.
Complainants’ legal counsel Atty. Roberto Labe noted, “The facts of the case remain unchanged. The court did not nullify the prosecutor’s resolution supporting the charges.”
Naig-Miranda, known as the "Wais na Misis," was arrested over 14 counts of alleged Securities Regulation Code violations. Bail was set at ₱126,000 per count, amounting to over ₱1.7 million. Additionally, she faces an estafa case with no bail recommendation.
Her camp remains hopeful that the reinvestigation will lead to her exoneration. Meanwhile, the actress has yet to issue a personal statement regarding the charges.

MAFTI Rondalla Concert:
A spectacular celebration of music and heritage
Unforgettable cultural extravaganza mesmerizes the audience
by Rod Escobar Cantiveros
The MAFTI Rondalla Concert, recently held at the Seven Oaks Performing Art Centre, deserves a laurel of recognition for its outstanding performances, The ensemble's varied repertoire masterfully evoked a subtle nostalgic impact, transporting the audience through a reverential musical journey.
From the lively and upbeat "New York, New York" to the joyous Christmas Medley segment, the concert was punctuated by heartfelt moments, including the poignant MAFTI Medley and THE OPM soul-searching "Hindi Kita Malilimutan." The selection of bucolic folk songs added a charming touch, showcasing the rondalla's enduring relevance and importance.
The entire ensemble delivered a truly entertaining and memorable experience cementing the significance of the rondalla in our cultural heritage.
Genalyn Tan, immediate past president of MAFTI and the driving force behind the concert, warmly introduced the event, paying tribute to the MAFTI Rondalla's humble yet ambitious beginnings in the mid1980s. Founded by the late MAFTI president Rosalinda Natividad Cantiveros, with the assistance of the late Leony Bailon, the rondalla over the years under the dedicated mentorship of Eva Mendez, Gory Parado, and others. With a cultural grant from the former Manitoba government, the MAFTI Rondalla, under the creative direction of Ronald Mervin Sison, staged a bold concert featuring a diverse repertoire, live performances of dances and songs, and exceptional musical excellence.
Inspiring welcome address by Mary Jane Napolitano, president of MAFTI, and warm messages of MLA Malaya Marcelino, (matinee) and MP Kevin Lamoureux at the gala night.
Interwoven between the main performances were captivating showcases by smaller groups of rondalla members. A standout was the enchanting rendition of 'Malinak Lay Labi', by Jon Malek, a traditional folk song infused with Indigenous elements. And family members, the Abella and Lozada Families whose performance added excitement to the audience. Other memorable moments included the piano interpretations of 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and 'La Campanilla", by Jett Russel Panganiban, as well as the lively street song 'Mamang Sorbetero'. The evening's energetic dance performances - Carinosa, Polka Sa Nayon, Pandango sa Ilaw, and the electrifying 'Tinikling'seamlessly merged with rhythmic movements with rondalla's melodic harmonies.
Timeless Western Classics were reimagined with musical excellence as the rondalla performed
mesmerizing renditions of 'Beautiful Girl', Eraserhead Medlely, 'Can't Help Falling In Love', and the soul-defining 'Hallelujah'. The ensemble's mastery of melody was further showcased in their heartfelt interpretations of 'Moon River' and 'The Prayer'. The concert's festive atmosphere was capped off with joyful performances of beloved Christmas songs, seamlessly blending English and Filipino lyrics in 'God is Good', 'Jesus Celebrate', 'Ang Pasko Ay Sumapit', 'Joy to the World', 'Silver Bells', and 'PaskoNa Sinta Ko'.
The spark that electrified the entire concert was undoubtedly Musical Director Meldrick Agravante. His dynamic energy and masterful direction brought the performances to life, creating an unforgettable experience that will resonate with the audience for a long time.
The MAFTI Rondalla Concert honored individuals who played significant roles in promoting
Filipino musical heritage, and these include the late Rosalinda Natividad Cantiveros, publisher and editor of the Filipino Journal and 2nd MAFTI president in the 1980s, who founded the Rondalla with the assistance of another teacher, the late Leony Bailon; Gory Parado, a dedicated mentor who ensure rondalla's continued vibrancy and relevance; Maria Cabrera Manzano, Vicky Cabrera; and the late Bernardette Agpalza, a former president, who managed rondalla's continuity and dedication.
In the end, my musical journey was an untiring, nerve-tingling experience infused with a patriotic twang, igniting a searing love for my heritage. The concert left me beaming with pride, embracing my identity as a Filipino Canadian, and feeling grateful for the infectious spirit of the community and beyond.

OCTOBER GETAWAY TO THE PHILIPPINES
07 October 2024 - Gem and Lita with sons Omar and Rico and grandson Scott were among the three hundred fourteen (314) passengers of Philippine Airlines PR117 on a 14-hour and 45-minute flight time across 6,594 miles of curved paths that fly over larger bodies of land to NAIA (Nonoy Aquino International Airport) Terminal. Upon arrival at 5:45 AM on 08 October we're whisked away by my niece's Land Cruiser to Camp Netanya Resort and Spa in the picturesque barangay Ligaya at Mabini Road on the coast of Anilao, town of Mabini in the province of Batangas which is one hour and 43 minutes drive (120 kms.) from the airport.
After a long flight Netanya with its air-conditioned rooms having private balconies overlooking the sea, Netanya is the place for us to relax by its infinity pools before enjoying the delicious cuisine at its restaurant Greeka. Netanya offers scuba diving, kayaking and cruising several bay islands and the waters of Anilao. by Gem and Lita Anis
Nestled in the scenic municipality of Mabini, Netanya offers a serene and luxurious escape to experience the feel of Santorini, Greece (one of the Cyclade islands in the Aegean Sea noted for the candy-coloured houses carved into cliffs, blue waters and buildings topped with cobalt-blue domes).
For three days we enjoyed Netanya and then moved to my niece's house at Poblacion Mabini where our daily-hired driver by the name of Akong would pick us up for our everyday itineraries and destinations.
First in our bucket list is to visit our two-storey ancestral home located in barrio Talaga Proper along the seashore of Mabini. The only one of its kind in the whole town, the house, with shiny floors of narra and molave wood, was remodelled and renovated to preserve its Spanish colonial characteristic feature - sliding wooden window panes made from "capiz" (oyster) panels. These are classic windows in Philippine architecture quite popular during the Spanish colonial period chosen because it was cheaper to make windows of "capiz" shells than glass.
The sun was already going down on that day of our house visit when Omar, Rico and Scott were driven by my niece's son, Denroe, to a famous mount of Mabini town known as "Gulugod Baboy", means "pig's spine", where you could have a panoramic view of the whole town, the green barrios below and the Batangas Bay.
On a Sunday, i.e., 13 October, the boys watched the weekly cockfighting (locally termed "sabong"} in a local town cockpit. Without betting they enjoyed it - the blood sport involving domesticated roosters

as contestants (Remember, sa 'Sa Pula, Sa Puti"?} with metal spurs strapped to their legs and pecking each other with rage. Cockfighting became hugely popular in the country since it was first witnessed and recorded by Antonio Pigafetta, the Italian diarist aboard Ferdinand Magellan's 1521 expedition and discovery of the Philippines.
The province of Batangas is known for various products, including embroidery, "balisong" (butterfly knives), and brewed coffee ("kapeng barako"). Not to be missed is the popularly famous "bulalo", the signature beef- bone marrow soup of Batangas; basically, it is beef shank boiled in water with onions, garlic, black pepper, and salt. And of course, the Batangas dialect, known for the particle "eh", with variation such as "ala eh", means 'well', it's closest equivalent in English.
The smallest volcano in the world, Taal Volcano, is also in this southern province of Luzon, the Philippines' biggest island. Known as the smallest volcano in the world, Taal Volcano is a volcano within an
islet within a lake within a crater within a volcano. The volcano first erupted in 1572; the deadliest eruption was on 30 January 1911 with 1,335 deaths.
Visitng Tagaytay on a very
clear day allowed us to view Taal Lake and the volcano as we savour the delicious treats at Mary Grace Cafe.
We'll keep on travelling in the province of "ala eh".

Sara Duterte Says Forgiveness Not an Option This Christmas Amid Political Storm
Despite advocating for the spirit of forgiveness during Christmas, Vice President Sara Duterte declared she would not extend the gesture to her adversaries. Speaking at an Office of the Vice President (OVP) event in Ifugao on Tuesday, Duterte emphasized that forgiveness varies among individuals but clarified her personal stance.
“Christmas is a season for forgiveness, love, and generosity. But for me, I will not be forgiving anyone,” Duterte told beneficiaries during the OVP’s yearend thanksgiving program.
Her remarks come as she faces two impeachment complaints filed in Congress. Duterte, previously daring critics to file such complaints, accused lawmakers of potentially using the process to "squander government money" and deflect attention from the administration's failures. She stated her readiness to accept impeachment if convicted.
At the same event, Duterte seemingly criticized President Marcos, urging voters to scrutinize candidates and their backers in the 2025 midterm elections. “After the last election, were they able to fulfill the promises they made?”
she asked, appearing to reference Marcos’ unfulfilled pledge to lower rice prices to ₱20 per kilo.
The Vice President’s recent clashes with Marcos, First Lady Liza Marcos, and Speaker Martin Romualdez have drawn significant attention. Her expletive-laden remarks about them have sparked suspicions of grave threats and potential violations of anti-terrorism laws.
Despite the political turmoil, Duterte continues her official engagements, marking the OVP’s anniversary with thanksgiving programs across its satellite offices.
Timor-Leste Approves Extradition of Former Philippine Congressman Arnie Teves
The government of Timor-Leste has granted the Philippines' request to extradite former Negros Oriental Representative Arnolfo “Arnie” Teves Jr., according to a statement from the Department of Justice (DOJ) on Thursday, December 5.
Teves is accused of masterminding the March 2023 “Pamplona Massacre,” which resulted in the deaths of Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo and nine others during an aid distribution event. The former congressman fled the Philippines after the incident and resides in Timor-Leste.
Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla hailed the decision as a "resounding victory for the Filipino people" and a reflection of the
government’s commitment to pursuing justice.
Despite the absence of a formal extradition treaty between the two nations, Timor-Leste's judiciary has repeatedly sided with the Philippines’ request. While playing golf, teves initially faced detention in March but contested his extradition through an appeal. After additional legal proceedings, the court reaffirmed its decision to send him back to the Philippines.
Teves, who denies involvement in the massacre, has been avoiding Philippine authorities for over a year. His alleged role in the killings led to his designation as a terrorist by the Anti-Terrorism Council and his expulsion from the House of Representatives.
The DOJ expressed gratitude to Timor-Leste’s judicial system for its adherence to principles of justice, paving the way for Teves to face trial in the Philippines.
Global Outcry Against China's Aggression in South China Sea
Countries and international blocs, including the United States, European Union, Japan, South Korea, and the United Kingdom, have condemned China's aggressive actions against Philippine vessels in the South China Sea, emphasizing adherence to international law and maritime safety.
US Ambassador MaryKay Carlson denounced China's use of water cannons and dangerous maneuvers near Scarborough and Sabina Shoals, stating these actions jeopardize lives and violate maritime law. The European Union echoed similar concerns, calling China’s actions contrary to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
Japan’s Ambassador Endo Kazuya criticized the aggressive maneuvers, underscoring their threat to maritime safety. British Ambassador Laure Beaufils and South Korea’s embassy in Manila also expressed alarm, calling for
respect for international law and the rules-based order in the region.
The criticism follows incidents on December 4, when Chinese Coast Guard vessels and a warship targeted Philippine Coast Guard and fisheries vessels within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone. Near Scarborough Shoal, a Chinese warship closely shadowed a Philippine Coast Guard ship, while water cannons and ramming tactics damaged fisheries vessels near Sabina Shoal.
China defended the actions as "lawful" within its claimed territory, which the Philippines rejects, citing a 2016 international ruling that invalidated China’s sweeping claims.
Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo confirmed plans to lodge another diplomatic protest, while officials warned of a "steep escalation" in China’s tactics, hinting at the potential deployment of Philippine Navy vessels in response.

Crafts are not only fun but also encourage creativity and fine motor skills.
Bake Together: Turn your kitchen into a cozy, delicious workshop. Bake cookies, cupcakes, or even try something new like homemade pretzels. Let your kids measure ingredients, mix batter, and decorate the finished products. It’s a perfect mix of fun and learning, and you’ll end up with tasty treats to enjoy as a family.
