FMC-ENGGEOMB Celebrate With The Theme: “Essence of Giving”, at Annual Holiday Gala

The Filipino Members Chapter of Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba recently hosted its highly anticipated Annual Holiday Gala and Fundraising event on November 30, 2024, at Canada Inns Pembina. The event attracted an impressive gathering of members, sponsors, family, friends, and guests, all united by a commitment to the spirit of service and generosity.

As a first-time attendee, I was thrilled to connect with fellow engineering graduates who are doing great in their fields while dedicating their time to give back to the community. This year's theme, "The Essence of Giving," not only celebrated the festive season but also sought to raise funds for the education, training, and professional development of newcomers and Chapter members.

Members and guests arrived in smart casual attire,"ugly" holiday sweaters, adding color and vibrancy to the festivities. The creativity and camaraderie among attendees created a joyful atmosphere that

resonated throughout the evening.

Guest Speaker Michael Gregoire, P.Eng., delivered an inspiring speech on the importance of giving through involvement and participation. He highlighted three forms of giving:

1. Financial contributions and material donations,2. Sharing resources, time, skills, knowledge, and mentorship—recognizing that every achievement is built upon the foundation of volunteer efforts, and 3. Kindness.

Following the engaging speech, dinner was prepared and while attendees enjoyed their meals, the intermission featured a series of talented performances, showcasing the artistic flair within our community.

The musical numbers added an energetic and uplifting atmosphere to the evening, providing a perfect transition from a delightful meal to the highlights of the events.

Highlights of the events include Sponsor Recognition segment, BMO Presentation, Recognition of the new Engineers-in-Training (EIT) and Professional Engineers (P.Eng.)

and Presentation of Scholarship & Bursary Awards. Special awards were given to recognize outstanding contributions, as well as acknowledging individuals who have made significant strides in their respective fields.

This year awardees are Ms. Ethel Clemente Fernandez, P. Eng and Dr. Marolo Alfaro, PhD, P.Eng. Here’s the exemplary achievements of the 2 awardees:

Ethel Clemente Fernandez, P.Eng

• 2024 Judith Weismann Women In Engineering Champion award

• Fellowship of Engineers Canada She is the first Filipina to receive these awards.

Dr. Marolo Alfaro, Ph.D., P.Eng

• 2024 Technical Excellence award

He is the first Filipino and the 10th professor out of 62 awardees to receive this award since this was first given in 1962.

As the recognition ceremonies came to a close, attendees had the opportunity to participate in the Door Prizes and Silent Auction

Draws and the much-awaited 50/50 draw that added an element of excitement to the night. The dance floor soon opened, inviting guests to celebrate their successes and forge new connections in a lively atmosphere.

Overall, the event was a resounding success, filled with moments of inspiration, recognition, and entertainment. As we reflect on the achievements of the evening, we are reminded of the incredible

potential within our community and the bright future that lies ahead for engineers everywhere.

Photos capturing the joy and excitement of the evening are available on the Chapter's social media pages. The Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba looks forward to building upon this year's success and is eager to plan future gatherings that will strengthen connections and enhance community impact for years to come.

Garden City Community Centre hosts annual Skate with Santa

Like a scene out of a Hallmark Christmas movie, hundreds of community members, both young and young-at-heart, including Mayor Scott Gillingham, gathered today at Seven Oaks Arena for the annual Skate with Santa event hosted by Garden City Community Centre with support from Councillor Devi Sharma. Attendees enjoyed meeting Santa, getting their faces painted, making holiday crafts, and taking to the ice for a free public skate.

"Every year, this annual event brings joy and warmth, making it a wonderful way to embrace the holiday spirit. This year was especially meaningful as we approach the conclusion of Winnipeg 150 celebrations," says Councillor Sharma. "I look forward to this event each year as it spreads holiday cheer to our community members, many of whom are newcomers trying skating and experiencing these kinds of holiday traditions for the first time."

“Our Skate with Santa is an event that we very much enjoy hosting. It has always been intended to bring families from our community to the facility to share in the Spirit of the Holidays. The atmosphere is always joyful and everyone is laughing and smiling. It is lovely to bring our diverse community together to celebrate the Season

and we can’t wait for next year!” said Margie Reis, General Manager of Garden City Community Centre. Attendees also contributed to A & O Support Services' "Be a Santa for a Senior" initiative, donating gifts and essential items to support older adults in

need within the community. This donation drive was spearheaded by Lorrie Rogalka.

Other Quotes: Mayor Scott Gillingham:

"The Skate with Santa event is a wonderful way to bring the community together during the holiday season," said Mayor Scott Gillingham. "It's an opportunity for families to share in the joy of skating, connect with neighbours, and create memories.”

Christina Lactupo:

Jewish Federation Has Shabbat Dinner to Honour Bonds Between Jewish and Filipino Communities sponsored by Asper Foundation

The Jewish Federation of Winnipeg held a special Shabbat Dinner with members of the Filipino community sponsored by the Asper Foundation at the Berney Theatre on Nov 29 attended by some 50 people. The event was an opportunity for both communities to experience the joy of the Sabbath, and reflect on their shared values, and was part of

the Asper Foundation’s Community Shabbat Program. The program brings toether Jewish organizations and invited community groups to foster cross-cultural understanding and reflection.

The Filipino community in Manitoba is a large community, now numbering about 100,000 people.

Rabbi Mass, the spiritual leader

of Shaarey Zedek synagogue, who played piano while singing songs that are part of welcoming the Sabbath explained that Jews light the Sabbath candles in honour of the creation of the world, when God said “Let there be light.” He sang traditional songs such as Letha Dodi, and Shalom Aleichem before citing the blessings over the wine and bread and hand washing.

Klapman, went to the Philippines and brought people to the garment trade in Winnipeg.

Larry Vickar, a philanthropic leader of the Jewish community and a host of the event spoke of his warm and long standing relationship with members of the Filipino community. He noted that when his wife Tova arrived in Winnipeg in 1968 from Israel after being raised on a kibbutz and serving in the Israeli army, she was not able to speak English and “she got a job working in the needle industry,” where “she sewed pockets onto jeans”. She worked for Hercules Manufacturing, which was a company owned by the Freed family, and got to meet and befriend members of the Filipino community who also worked alongside her.

Vickar, who has many long standing contacts and friends in the Filipino community, referred to the fact that the Philippines voted in favor of UN Resolution recommending the partition of Palestine “and the establishment of a Jewish state in 1947.” The Philippines was counted among the 33 countries that supported the establishment of Israel and was “the only Asian country that voted for the resolution.” Jeff Morry, Senior Director of Strategy and Programming of the Asper Foundation who gave closing remarks also noted this fact, indicating that the Jewish community remembers the support of the Philippines in this crucial vote. Israel and the Philippines established full diplomatic relationships in 1957, and embassies were opened in Tel-Aviv and Manila in 1962.

Vickar also noted that two Jewish businessmen, Dave Kaufman and Sam

Vickar also recounted how President of the Philippines Manuel Quezon provided a safe haven and rescued some 1300 Jews fleeing from Nazi Germany, German occupied Europe, and Shanghai in Japanese –occupied China to the Philippines Holocaust from 1937-1941. Morry also noted that this fact that is well remembered by the Jewish community.

Perla Javate, a Winnipeg School Trustee, and the Founder and President of the Philipine Heritage Council of Manitoba, brought greetings at the event, indicated she was delighted to be there, and made the crowd laugh when she said, "Larry Vickar knows more people in the Filipino community than the rest of us.”

Vickar also pointed out that when he led a Jewish Federation mission to Israel, there were eight members of the Filipino community who went on the mission. One of them was Rod Cantiveros who founded The Filipino Journal in 1987, and was covering the event. He told the Winnipeg Jewish Review how he recalled visiting the Jewish quarter old city of Jerusalem and how quiet it was as the Sabbath began.

Her Honour Lieutenant governor Anita Neville brought greetings at the outset of the program, noting that Jews will be celebrating Chanukah on Dec 25 his year just as those in the Filipino community will be celebrating Christmas

Pastor Wendel Olahan of the Filipino community gave a blessing and spoke of the significance of having a day of rest , and how since he had a stroke, he really has needed that rest and how important it has been for his recovery. "I know I need to rest," he said.

Jeff Lieberman, CEO of the Jewish

Federation spoke of how this was an important opportunity for members of the Jewish and Filipino communities to break bread together, and have a chance to engage in conversation and form bonds with each other.

Joseph Savillo, a Filipino Canadian actor, singer, dancer, choreographer, musical theatre teacher and musical creator born and raised in Winnipeg, gave moving remarks about his original production Ma-Buhay! A New Musical which had its Canadian debut this past summer at Rainbow Stage. He recalled how “I made friends with member of the Jewish community when I went to Grant Park High school.” He spoke of living in Toronto and returning to Winnipeg to look after his aging parents, who have since passed. Andrea Macaset and Joy Lazo, both Filipino singers each sang a gorgeous song from Savillo’s original music.

The evening ended with Rabbi Mass and Filipino singer Paul Ong singing an absolutely beautiful version of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah, as the crowd sang along.

Cari Shenkarow, Vice-President of the Jewish Federation was honoured to emcee the evening. Tables were decorated with the flags of the Filipines and Israel.

The Rady JCC also partnered with the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg and the Asper Foundation in bringing together this special evening.

Editor's note: As I listened to the crowd singing Hallelujah , I recalled how in 2007 while in Israel I observed what was then the world's largest flag, a flag of Israel produced by a Filipino Christian.

The huge blue and white flag, measured 2,165 feet long and 330 feet wide and weighed 5.7 tons, and at the time broke the Guiness Book of Records for the world's largest flag.

It was made by Filipino entrepreneur Grace GalindezGupana who produced a giant Israeli flag as a testament to her love for Israel and the Jewish people and as a celebration of 50 years of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Israel.

"Joy To The World Concert": bursting Christmas revelry for charitable cause

Christmas Sing-Along led by Tricia Magsino Barnabe and Denny Nangan, a full-throttle family delight!

Last Sunday, December 15, St. Ignatius Catholic Church was abuzz with festive cheer as the "Joy To The World Concert" filled the sacred place with warm-spirited songs, heralding the most celebrated Christmas tradition of the Christian church. Instead of the usual holy mass, the church resonated with an exultation of Christmas carols, spreading joy and merriment to all in attendance.

At the heart of this joyous concert lies a selfless purpose to support the underprivileged Filipinos in the Philippines through the forthcoming dental, medical, and vision mission slated for January and February 2026. This mission marks the second installment of the organizers' charitable efforts, following the success of their inaugural mission earlier this

year. The concert's gracious host, the Parish of St. Ignatius, will also benefit from this worthy endeavor. To set the audience into the holiday spirit, Tricia Magsino Barnabe and Denny Nangan led an impromptu Christmas Sing-Along. The crowd's initial anxiousness quickly gave way to infectious enthusiasm as everyone clapped and tapped along to the lively tunes. Tricia and Denny's energetic performance seamlessly segued into the main concert, electrifying the atmosphere and fully immersing the audience in the joyous Christmas mood.

The "Joy To The World" concert was a night to remember, filled with chains of Christmas, 19 songs on record, with everyone belting out their favorite tunes with glee. From

The talented line-up of performers included Rodel Olesco, Jerlene Maranan, Ronnie Francisco, Elisha Abella, and Diosa Panaligan accompanied by guitarist Zaldy Gonzaga, among others. The dynamic duo, Tricia Magsino Barnabe and Denny Nangan, brought the house down with their energetic hosting and singing. The delightful duet of Tricia Magsino Barnabe, with Ronnie Franciso and Rodel Olesco brought the house with jewelled rendition of songs, especialy "My Prayer" dedicted to Tricia's Mom, Leah Enverga Magsino. The Children's Choir added a touching and adorable element to the show. The grand finale, a rousing "Feliz Navidad" sing-along left everyone euphoric high, basking in the joy and spirit of the season.

"The "Joy To The World" concert was a resounding success, thanks to the tireless efforts and talents of Tricia Magsino Barnabe and Denny Nangan. This spectacular event not only delighted the audience but also benefited St. Ignatius Chruch and a forthcoming dental, medical, and vision mission to the Philippines," said Larry Vickar, CEO of Vickar Automotive Group, concert's major sponsor, graciously acknowledged the endeavor, and he added, "More power and good health to all involved.

Dr. Tricia Magsino Barnabe expressed her heartfelt gratitude, saying, "It was an absolute pleasure and honor to present this concert alongside incredibly talented performing artists and dedicated individuals behind the scenes. Each volunteer generously shared their gifts, skills, and time to benefit St. Ignatius Church and support our upcoming dental, medical, and vision mission to the Philippines. Kevin Lamoureux trip to Philippines

Earlier this month I was in Manila participating in the team Canada Trade Mission and I witnessed many initiatives that strengthened the economic ties between Canada and the Philippines.

As you may be aware that the Department of International Trade with the support of the Canadian embassy hosted a Canada Philippine Trade mission earlier this month in Manila. With over 300 business representatives from Canada and over 400 business representatives from the Philippines the mission was a success and even President Marcos who met with Minister Ng commented on how pleased he was with the size of the trade mission, and he had several of his secretaries and advisors participate.

In what could be described as, “business to business speed dating”, people explored how they could potentially invest in exporting and importing of goods and services including things like technology and AI.

Canada’s International Trade Minister, Mary Ng announced that Canada and Philippines would begin the process of having exploratory discussions on a potential bilateral free trade agreement as early as January 2025.

Air Canada informed the trade mission participants at the convention facility that come April of 2025 Air Canada will begin with four direct flights between Manila and Vancouver a week. Air Canada’s announcement will make travel to the Philippines easier and hopefully cheaper too.

The Government of Canada doubled down by establishing a second trade office. Back in February this year I was with Canada’s Minister of Agriculture where we announced that Manila would be the home to Canada’s Indo-Pacific Agriculture and Agri-Food office, which is there to help facilitate growth in over 20 Indo-Pacific countries. Fast forward to earlier this month and this time Canada’s Minister of International Trade announced that “Export Development

Canada” will also be opening an office in Manila. Combined these two offices will be facilitating all forms of economic activities between Canada and Philippines.

Philippines is exploring a possible deal that would see collaboration with the Canadian nuclear sector on the need for Philippines energy requirements. Canada is one of a few countries in the world that not only has all the materials required but we also have the technology and expertise.

Like all trips that I have made to the Philippines, connecting with appointed and elected officials is important as it builds bridges.

Throughout the trade mission we met with several Presidential Secretaries, Senators, Congress Representatives, and with advisors to the President. Both Governments are serious and want to proceed with more economic links between both countries.

At the conclusion of the trade mission, I was able to do some other activities like ride the MRT and look around the outdoor marketplace around EDSA and Roxas Blvd.

Sunday morning before 6am I was up and about walking all over the outside of the Mall of Asia and along the Bay where I saw literally thousands of people running marathons and so much more including fantastic

Christmas displays and one cool Santa statue. Later that morning I was out in Bacoor riding on a tricycle and checking out the outdoor markets in Imus. Thank you to Larry and Tess for taking me out to Cavite and dropping me off at the airport. Overall, it was a very quick trip but so much was accomplished and now we need to continue the push for things like a formal trade agreement and more. To Rod and family, thank you for continuing to publish my articles and to those that subscribe to the Journal, have a very Merry Christmas and I wish you well in 2025.

Ultimate New Wave Evolution

(& closely related styles) part 75

everal parts ago, I featured albums that may be genrified as Sophistipop-Pop-oriented New Wave that is best characterized by its elements of Light Jazz, Blue-Eyed Soul, Rhythm & Blues, and/or Lounge/Dance Pop.

Many elitist New Wavers don't consider it a member of the family, shunning them the way they derogate Italo Pop, or Nuova Ondata.

However, to the ears of a true New Wave academic, all these interrelated styles undulate in the same sonic spectrum.

This set consists of albums that fit smoothly in this sophisticated class of New Wave music.

Mary Jane Veloso Returns to Philippines After 14 Years on Death Row in Indonesia

MANILA, Philippines — Filipina Mary Jane Veloso, who spent 14 years on death row in Indonesia for drug trafficking, returned to the Philippines on December 18 under a historic agreement that marks strengthened ties between the two nations.

Veloso's repatriation was the first instance of Indonesia

transferring full custody of a prisoner to another country. Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo called the move "a mark of trust and friendship," expressing gratitude to Indonesia for its "humanitarian" decision.

Veloso, 39, was arrested in 2010 for carrying 2.6 kilograms of heroin in a suitcase and was sentenced to death. Her execution was halted in 2015 after diplomatic efforts by then-President Benigno Aquino. Veloso has consistently claimed she was duped by an international drug syndicate.

Upon her arrival, Veloso reunited with family at the Correctional Institution for Women in Mandaluyong City, under tight security following threats from her alleged recruiters. Calls for executive clemency have been renewed, with advocates asserting she was a victim of human trafficking.

Manalo commended the coordinated efforts of Philippine officials and the Indonesian government, highlighting the significance of Veloso's return as a testament to bilateral cooperation.

Ice Seguerra and Liza DiñoSeguerra shared photos of the event on Instagram, capturing moments from the celebration, including Manalo dipping Maranan for a kiss. Vic Sotto, Manalo’s co-host on "Eat Bulaga," was spotted among the principal sponsors.

The couple announced their

engagement just weeks before the wedding, though Maranan revealed that Manalo had proposed in February this year.

Marcos Jr. Delays Signing of 2025

Budget, Plans Line Veto

MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has postponed the signing of the proposed P6.352-trillion 2025 General Appropriations Act (GAA) to conduct a "rigorous and comprehensive review" amid concerns over budget cuts, Malacañang announced on Tuesday.

Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin stated that Marcos is personally reviewing the budget ratified by Congress on December 11. The President’s decision to defer signing aims to address criticisms regarding cuts to key sectors, including the Department of Education (DepEd), which faced a P12billion reduction.

“The signing scheduled for December 20 will not proceed to allow a thorough assessment,” Bersamin explained, adding that a line-item veto is expected to ensure

alignment with public welfare and fiscal laws.

Marcos met with key officials, including Finance Secretary Ralph Recto and Budget Secretary Amenah Pangandaman, to address these issues. He has pledged to restore funding for DepEd’s computerization program and other slashed allocations, noting that education is a constitutional priority.

Senate Minority Leader Aquilino Pimentel III downplayed fears of a reenacted budget, emphasizing the importance of refining allocations. Advocacy groups have criticized cuts to education and health, urging Congress to reverse reductions in social services.

The revised budget’s signing date remains uncertain, as stakeholders await adjustments addressing the concerns raised.

Manitoba Made Child Care More Affordable with $10-a-Day Coverage for Non-School Days

Families with school-aged children in licensed, funded child-care facilities began paying just $10 a day for care on non-school days, starting Dec. 8, Acting Education and Early Childhood Learning Minister Tracy Schmidt announced.

“The need for affordable child care didn’t stop on in-services and holidays,” said Schmidt. “The previous government failed to provide $10-a-day funding for school-aged children on non-school days like in-services, holidays, and summer breaks. By introducing true $10-a-day care every day, Manitoba’s child-care system became one of the most affordable in Canada.”

The initiative, funded entirely by the Manitoba government, extended the Reduced Parent Fee Revenue Grant to cover school-aged care on approximately 73 nonschool days each year. This reduced the cost from the previous maximum of $20.80 to just $10 per day. Families experienced the benefit immediately during the winter holiday break.

“The holidays are meant for celebrating with family, but for many parents, the expenses can add up quickly,” Schmidt added. “This change helped ease the financial burden, making it easier to afford those special moments during the season.”

Budget 2024 committed to extending $10-a-day child care throughout the 202425 school year, ensuring all families with

school-aged children in licensed, funded facilities paid the same affordable fees across Manitoba.

For some families with two school-aged children, the program saved approximately $140 during the holiday season alone.

Michelle Pearson, a Winnipeg mother of two, shared her appreciation: “The extension of $10-a-day child care was a huge relief for our family. In these challenging economic times, every dollar saved mattered to us.”

More information about Manitoba’s early learning and child-care programs is available at www.manitoba.ca/education/ childcare/families/10_dollar_a_day.html.
